THE ASSISTANT'S NOTES MICK MULHERN

HELLO TO EVERYONE READING TODAY'S ISSUE OF THE HORNETS BEFORE ANOTHER CHALLENGING TEST, THE FIRST OF TWO AT HOME. I'd like to extend my welcome to those who've made the long journey from Lincoln. It was a good game against Rylands from two teams that wanted to play. They surprised us a little bit because their shape is generally 4-3-3 but they went with a 35-2, which gave us a good challenge. They had a good team, obviously Adam Buxton is an ex-pro and he was quite tidy. They caused us a few problems which we solved - I thought we were better in the

second half. All I saw before it went to penalties were positives, and we're going in the right direction. We would've preferred a league game, but it's another solid building block. We're through on penalties, but in the 90, we done more than enough to win against a side who've made a very good start. We were without so many regular, established players - a lot of lads came in and put a marker down. I though David Allasan was reall good, Kieren Aplin was solid at left-

back, Dylan Archer and Robbie Spence worked hard in the middle. Everyone put a shift in, there were no weak links, which was really pleasing. Today is a test again. It's the same as what I mentioned against Sheffield when you're playing teams who've come in from elsewhere, they're used to winning, but really you want to face established teams. Lincoln know this league and know how to play the game. We flew through a similar test at Sheffield.

FROM THE DRESSING ROOM OLLY MARTIN

GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO TODAY'S LEAGUE FIXTURE AGAINST LINCOLN UNITED. Last week, it was nice to get another victory against a good side away from home. We played them in May, so we really wanted to go there and get revenge. As a team, it was one of our strongest performances so we would've been gutted if we didn't get the win. No matter what the situation is, I'm always confident taking a penalty. I'm on pens at the minute, so it's nice that Kevin Bolam and the lads trust me. I put my hand up straight away last week - I don't think

the pressure really gets to me. It's all coming together now for us. We haven't played badly, but for one reason or another, we couldn't get the results. I had a feeling the results would change, and thankfully we're hitting a bit of form now. The travelling gets a bit draining. I didn't mind it going into the season, but it's when we're away every week. It'll be good to play at home for once and have someone travel to us. It's a fair distance

from Lincoln, so hopefully they come off that bus a bit knackered. We haven't always been at it from kickoff at home games, such as the Yorkshire Amateur fixture, but our warm-ups are improving and so is the mentality. Lincoln are quite close to us in the table, so it'll be a good test. In this league, anyone can beat anyone. They'll want to take all three points today to extend the gap, and obviously we want to jump them.

RESULTS RECAP We recap our last fixtures still Issue 18 of The Hornets. Hebburn Town settled for point against table-toppers Liversedge last time at home. After a Liversedge chance through Oliver Fearon at on end, Hebburn split the Sedge backline, with Amar Purewal going past the 'keeper before losing his balance to hit wide. Another chance came for Hebburn as the ball dropped perfectly to Connor Bell, but he hit the post at close-range. Sedge took the lead through a Ben Atkinson penalty, but a red card to Jack Stockdill and Jack Donaghy's tenacious volley shared the points on South Tyneside.

A trip to Sheffield proceeded, and Olly Martin opened the game by smashing the post on four minutes. It would take just 16 minutes for the deadlock to be broken, as Dan Groves perfectly picked out Purewal for a pinpoint header. Purewal second was ruled out, but Martin increased the advantage from the spot. Bell stretched onto the end of Groves' cross on the half-hour mark for three, before he bagged another after being slid in by Michael Richardson during the second 45. Sheffield were reduced to 10 in the dying minutes, making sure of the 4-0 victory.

NOTICEBOARD The next round of the Buildbase FA Trophy was drawn on Monday at 1pm. Hebburn Town have been rewarded a home tie against tier seven side, Warrington Town. The Hornets' shootout victory last week over Warrington Rylands have earned them a clash against another outfit from the Cheshire town. The Yellows currently sit in sixth in the Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division. Fourteen league games have saw Paul Carden's men take 24 points, with seven victories. The third round qualifying fixture will take place at The Green Energy Sports Ground on Saturday, October 30 at 3pm, proceeding a trip to Bridlington Town for Kevin Bolam's squad. Warrington, meanwhile, will

head into the game off the back of an away fixture at Grantham Town. They reached the Buildbase FA Trophy first round last season, losing 3-1 at Marske United after progressing against Lancaster City on penalties. The winner of this tie will enter the first round on Saturday, November 14. Should The Hornets reach that stage, a trip to Pontefract Collieries will be rearranged.

Hebburn Town secured a second win on the bounce last week, earning cup progression on penalties. A cagey affair opened with Tom Potter playing a one-two with Connor Bell, before his chance from 20-yards rolled through to the ‘keeper. On the 20 mark, Callum Dolan drove past Jack Donaghy, however Mark Foden made a neat stop at his front post. Nine minutes later, Elliott Morris raced through, but Foden's feet denied him. Dolan found the ball at his feet inside the area, whose chance took a clip off Foden on the brink of the break. The Hornets nearly pegged in front with 54 on the clock, as Tom Potter curled a strike towards the back stick,

skimming the woodwork. An in-swinging free-kick from Olly Martin dropped for Tom Devitt after the hour, whose close-range poke was blocked off the line by Rylands. Owen Robinson, was played through following a misplaced pass, but he blazed wide on 70 minutes. With eight to go, a free Morris struck inside the area, but Foden parried out. With the game entering the last few minutes, Martin’s free-kick was blocked, before he volleyed the rebound wide following a deflection. With the game going to penalties, Foden stepped up to save Joe Coveney’s spot kick, sending Hebburn through to the next round.

PLAYER'S PERSPECTIVE Hornets shot-stopper Mark Foden reflects on our Buildbase FA Trophy shootout win. The Scotsman marked his 50th outing for Hebburn Town with a second consecutive clean sheet. "I thought we defended really well," stated the 'keeper. "We attacked well and didn't take our chances, but we managed to get a clean sheet at the back. "We know if we keep tight at the back, we've got a chance of winning the game. "The boys done well - it's very positive considering where we've been. "We've knuckled down and our trusting ourselves in the right positions - the boys are getting to grips to it now. "It's a new team and we're starting to get settled, and

hopefully this is the sort of momentum we need." The ex-Gateshead goalkeeper also looked towards today's test against Lincoln United. "[The home games] are about time," he added. "It feels like every Saturday we're on the bus, so it'll be good to play at home. "To be at home, it's not a fullday event - it's just a case of turning up for Saturday. "Hopefully we can build on the momentum we've already got."

WILL HARRIS

HEBBURN HEROES: DAN NEIL Sunderland's Will Harris discusses how Hebburn Town Juniors propelled him onto the big stage. The 21-year-old moved to The Black Cats back in September 2020 from Burnley's academy. The clinical forward spent several seasons at The Green Energy Sports Ground, earning interest

from several highclass youth lines. The Clarets signed the then-16-yearold in 2017, who spent over two years at Turf Moor, completing his scholarship. "Hebburn helped me a lot in my development," the

South Tyneside native commented. "They brought me through and taught me everything I know to this day really. "They helped me to where I am now I've still got a lot of improvement to

to obviously do, but I'm really enjoying it and that's because of Hebburn. "I played from around 12 to 16 at Hebburn, and it's been a big part of my career so far. "People like Stephen Rutherford, Kev Carter, Norman Gray all helped me out on my journey. "It was grassroots level, but there were still lots of exposure to scouts, so they gave me a platform really." The frontman furthered his learning with time on loan at Colne and Warrington Town whilst with Premier League side Burnley, before departing last year. "That exposure to non-league and men's football, and playing at Hebburn, has helped me a lot. "It was a great step for me personally." Sunderland then snapped up the attacker in time for the 2020/21 campaign, before he made his professional debut on October 5, 2021 in a 2-1 EFL Trophy win at Lincoln City. Just a few days ago, Harris

made another start in the same competition, as the League One outfit rode out 2-1 winners against Manchester United U21s at the Stadium of Light. "Every U23s game I play is to aid my development to hopefully get into the firstteam set-up. "That's obviously the end goal for me right now." Harris also paid testament to The Hornets current layout and recent accolades. "It's a good sign this club is heading in the right direction. "The FA Vase is a big competition for non-league clubs, so winning something like that is a big achievement. "Myself, Dan Neil and a lot of other lads are in the positions we are now thanks to Hebburn, so hopefully there'll be a lot more young lads come through in the future."

AN INTRODUCTION BY DAVID COULTHARD

We take a look inside this afternoon's opposition, Lincoln United. The club were formed as Lincoln Amateurs in 1938, but due to World War Two couldn’t join a league until 1946, when they entered the Lincolnshire League. The Whites briefly moved into the Lincoln League but returned to the Lincolnshire League once finances improved. This coincided with a name change to Lincoln United in a early 1950s, a move that was necessary due to signing a paid player, Ray Bean from Nottingham Forest. They won their first league title in the 1963/64 campaign and have won several divisional titles since during their spells in the Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, NCEL and Central Midlands Leagues. Their most successful era

28

was during the 1990s when they secured three promotions in four seasons, and also reached the FA Cup first round on two occasions, losing to Huddersfield Town and Walsall. In the 2016/17 season, they won the Lincolnshire Senior Cup for the only time in their history. Lincoln currently sit 13th in the Pitching In Northern Premier League East Division, three points ahead of Hebburn, although The Hornets do have a game in hand on Sam Wilkinson’s side.

THE INSIDE INFO Lincoln United secretary, Andy Mead, describes The Whites' start to the campaign. Hello everyone - the club looks forward to visiting The Green Energy Sports Ground this afternoon. I first joined Lincoln United as secretary for the women's team in 2018, but I was asked to step up and become Club Secretary in December 2020. I'm still the women's team secretary, and both roles require a lot of work but I'm loving the job. The start to the season has been indifferent, with some good wins but some questionable performances. I know the lads will only be hurting though, and only time and supporting each other will make us stronger. The whole team have

different qualities and skills, and I could mention one or two key players, but I'm going to keep that a secret! Going into today's game, I'm nervous but if the lads play to their qualities, people might be surprised. I'm not going to say what my head says, but my heart says 3-2 to Lincoln.

KEY MEN

THE GAFFER Sam Wilkinson

A favourite at Ashby Avenue, Wilkinson has been with The Whites for a number of years. He rose through the ranks as a midfielder at Lincoln United, helping youth sides to titles before transitioning into a target man. The ex-Grantham Town striker bagged 62 goals in 200 outings, before becoming Dave Frecklington's assistant,.Eighteen months at the helm then came for Wilkinson, prior to departing in 2019/20 but returning the following year.

SHOT-STOPPER

ROCK SOLID

The young goalkeeper has played seven times this campaign, keeping two clean sheets. The Lincoln-born 'keeper is a product of Sheffield Wednesday and Chesterfield, and enjoyed time with a silverware-winning Collingham. Spencer spent the 2019/20 season with Lincoln Moorlands Railway, before moving to The Whites this season. His league debut saw a 1-0 victory against Frickley Athletic, and the recent departure of fellow 'keeper Ross Woolley will see Spencer rack up more minutes.

The loyal full-back is The Whites' longest serving player with over 300 appearances. Smith, who has made the joint-most appearances this season with 12, caught the eye at Ashby Avenue in 2012, earning a move to Boston United in the sixth tier. After a year at York Street, he penned terms with Grantham Town, having joined them on loan for a stint the season prior. He returned to Lincoln United in 2014, winning countless end of season awards.

Ellis Spencer

Kallum Smith

MIDFIELD MAESTRO

Tobias Liversidge

The 19-year-old, formerly a hotshot at Lincoln City, has risen to the challenge at step four. Liversidge, once on the books at Nottingham Forest, spent six years at The Imps, while also playing his trade for Spalding United from February 2020. The energetic central midfielder linked up with Lincoln United in July 2021, and scored against Spalding in pre-season. Like Kallum Smith, Liversidge has appeared in every game for The Whites this season.

DANGER MAN

ONE TO WATCH

The lethal frontman has notched four goals from six starts for The Whites. Having played for Lincoln United's U18s, Park travelled to Gainsborough Trinity, representing the U21s and first-team. The striker helped AFC Mansfield to the NCEL Division One title, before a move to Retford United was disturbed with an 18month knee injury. After a return to the pitch, Park found the net 24 times for Hykeham Town, with a transfer to Lincoln United in May 2020 the reward.

Lincoln's top scorer with five to his name, Cotton is expected to impress in the final third. A product of Lincoln City, The Whites' skipper put pen to paper at Ashby Avenue from Stamford. He netted the winner in the Lincolnshire County Cup, before exiting Lincoln United after several years in 2019/20. An injury-disturbed campaign saw opportunities limited at Newark, forcing a return to The Whites for the attack-minded midfielder following the appointment Sam Wilkinson.

FROM THE ARCHIVES We relive the 2019/20 Emirates FA Cup extra preliminary round at Hillheads. Kevin Bolam's first cup clash with the Hornets saw an enthralling victory at Whitley Bay. A through ball carved open the Hebburn Town defence on 33 minutes, with Brad Hird slotting home to give the hosts the lead. Five minutes after, Hebburn pegged back on level terms through a Graeme Armstrong penalty after Louis Storey was chopped down. Moments later, Armstrong netted another spot kick to give The Hornets the advantage at the break. Two minutes into the second 45, a Michael Richardson freekick was tapped on by Storey, rolling past the 'keeper to make it 3-1. With 54 on the clock, Carl Taylor's cross was fired into the Bay net by their own number five. The Hornets didn't stop

pressing there, but had to wait until the 78th minute for their fifth of the afternoon. Armstrong was pushed in the back, with his third penalty of the day finding the net for the hat-trick. Whitley Bay were reduced to 10 with five minutes to go, before Taylor's cross was met by the head of substitute Jack Donaghy. Taylor made it 7-1 at the death with a drilled effort into the bottom corner. Hebburn Town XI: Jenninson, Taylor, Simpson, Storey, Carson, Lough, Martin (Stephenson, 89'), Spence, Armstrong (Chalmers, 81'), Richardson, Elliott (Donaghy, 71')

FOOTBALLING FIRSTS On loan from Gateshead, Nelson Ogbewe relives his journey thus far. First memory? Playing with a Sunday League team back in Italy, I was really excited. I remember coming on and scoring from the halfway line! I was a new lad and one of the only black players at the club - and I felt extremely proud. First inspiration? Mario Balotelli. My dad used to talk about him all the time. I'm maybe not the same personality wise, but I loved watching him score all the time. First pair of boots? A pair of Nike Total 90s when I was 7 or 8. First shirt? I never supported them, but an AC Milan top with Ronaldinho on the back. I supported Hellas Verona! First manager? Mike Williamson at Gateshead is my first senior manager. He's really wellknown and I learn a lot from him.

First game? I came off the bench for Gateshead against Farsley Celtic in November last year. It was a great experience but we lost in the last few seconds. First goal? In the FA Youth Cup with Gateshead U18s last year was my first competitive. It was our first game together and we beat Stockton away 1-0 in the last 15 minutes. First celebration? I always did the aeroplane celebration when I was younger. Since I've moved to England, I've started doing the Mbappe crossed arms one.

JUNIORS SECTION Hebburn Town Juniors, like the senior set-up, have thown their support behind Hebburn Helps. We're proud to have supported the local foodbank and crisis response team over the last few years. During the club's Wembley campaign, we launched a Virtual Ticket scheme in aid of multiple causes, including Hebburn Helps. Senior Chairman, Vin Pearson, presented the charity with a £1,500 cheque before the home game to Liversedge, while also holding multiple collection points. The Juniors followed suit, with an excellent gesture from Steve Best at KJS Floors LTD. Steve sponsored Hebburn Town Hornets U11s' kits, but decided to give the space on the front of the shirts to Hebburn Helps to raise further awareness. The club thank Steve for this

brilliant gesture. Meanwhile, our October HalfTerm Camp in conjunction with Newcastle Elite Academy is now open for bookings. The camp will run from October 25 to 28, and parents can book via the Shop section on our website. Also in the Juniors, our U9s' Barca team were recently pictured enjoying breakfast together after a hard-fought game last Saturday morning. With the social aspect being such an important part of the development phase in junior football, we love seeing our sides having fun and enjoying themselves!

41

INSIDE HEBBURN Hebburn Town physio, Michael Patterson, features in our first Inside Hebburn column. I used to play for my local team and school team, but stopped playing when I was around 18 or 19. I studied PE and Biology, so I went on to study Sports Rehab and through the clinic where I work, started working in football. I had to do placements. and Darren Noble at the clinic worked at Whitley Bay so I went there. When I fully qualified, Hebburn approached both of us, and I'm still here and really enjoying it. We joined at a high point we went down to Kent for the Buildbase FA Vase semifinal and then got the chance to go to Wembley. For me, it was a trip away with a bit of work on the side - I wasn't in any pressure like the players.

I'd been before for other sporting events, but being pitch side and sitting in the dugouts made it quite special. This season has been a bit of a slog with the travel, but we're enjoying it with the recent wins. Having players injured at times may be pressuring to some physios, but I don't really feel it. It's part of the job for me and it might cause the team a bit of a headache, but it's about being patient.
