THE GAFFER'S NOTES KEVIN BOLAM

GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME TO ISSUE 18 OF THE HORNETS AHEAD OF A MASSIVE LEAGUE CLASH AGAINST LIVERSEDGE. I'd like to extend my welcome to the players and officials of our opponents, Liversedge. I couldn't criticise the lads' effort and commitment against York, and I thought the supporters were fantastic from start to finish. York's quality showed on the day - we knew how tough it was going to be, but the lads applied themselves really well and kept at it for the duration of the game. The fans are a special bunch. They love having a day out and a good

laugh, there are never any problems with them. It was unbelievable, I just wish I could thank every single one of them. Unfortunately we've gone out of the FA Cup, but we've went out to a good side and we've got no complaints on the day. I think fitness in the last 25 minutes probably played a part. They changed their system in the second half - in the first half, I thought we dealt with them fairly well. Two of the three

goals we conceded are similar to goals in our league. York will be tough to beat there, and I can only see them climbing the National League North now. Liversedge have got ambitions like ourselves to climb the pyramid. From what I've heard, they're a really good side. What their squad is like now compared to when we played them in the Vase will be quite different - ours is due to players who've moved onto higher levels. We're looking forward to the challenge.

FROM THE DRESSING ROOM TOM POTTER

HELLO EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO TODAY'S PRE-MATCH READING AMID A TOUGH LIVERSEDGE TEST. On Saturday, it was a good experience for us playing a team of York's calibre. We knew it was a tough game, they're a few levels higher. It's the FA Cup at the end of the day it's about getting as far as we possibly could, which I feel we've done. We've not started well in the league, so it's about moving on from Saturday now. Hopefully we can get a good crowd today - it was excellent to see so many travel to York. It was a good day

out for them, and a nice place to play. It looked as though the fans had a great time - that's for sure! I'm happy to get a run in the team personally, I obviously want to be playing. I'm not too satisfied with my own performances, but that'll be the same for the majority of the squad. We're needing to do that bit better and pick up points where possible, and today's the perfect opportunity. At times, we have dominated games and decisions may've gone

against us, but we can't use them as excuses. It's going to take something before it clicks, and we will eventually get on a run, but it'll take something to get there. From April, us and Liversedge have changed quite a bit. That was a Vase game, which is always different. It's a new season, and they've started very well. At the minute, it feels like we're away every week, so it'll be nice to play at home. I feel like we play best here, so hopefully the result reflects that.

RESULTS RECAP We've picked up four points from a possible nine since our last issue of The Hornets. Hebburn Town dismissed Yorkshire Amateur on home soil on September 14. After an early Ammers lead, Connor Bell struck an equaliser on 22 minutes. Robbie Spence then found the net, but Ross Duggan fired past Mark Foden for a second time. Olly Martin turned inside Luke Sharry with 73 on the clock, before unleashing past the 'keeper from outside the area. Four minutes later, Bell was hacked down in the box, earning a spot kick. He smashed into the roof of the net, earning a 4-2 win.

A few days later, The Hornets visited Worksop Town, the first of three away games. After a minute, Foden's legs saved a penalty from Steven McDonnell. On the 32 mark, Martin was played through on goal, placing past Tieran Brookes. The Tigers claimed a point late in the day, however, as Zayn Hakeem smashed a screamer past Foden, Shildon played host to Hebburn the following Tuesday, with Dean Thexton sending Foden the wrong way from the spot on 41 minutes to take all three points.

NATIONAL AFFINITY CUP We're thrilled to be supporting If U Care Share as they enter cup competition on Monday. We've thrown our support behind the North East-based suicide prevention charity as they prepare to enter a national football competition The National Affinity Cup is an FA Cup-style competition for charities around the country and If U Care Share are entering the competition for the first time this season. They will face Northumbria Police in the first round and the fixture will be hosted at Hebburn's Green Energy Sports Ground on Monday, September 27 (7:30pm KO). This is not the first time The Hornets have supported If U Care Share, after we wore the foundation's logo on the sleeve of their home and away kits during the 2019/20 season, and we have

regularly promoted the annual #InsideOut campaign that is ran in line with World Suicide Prevention Day. Hebburn have also confirmed we will donate a signed shirt to aid fundraising on the night of the game and Bolam Premier Sportswear – a company ran by Hornets manager Kevin Bolam – are providing match kit for the If U Care Share Foundation squad. The gates will be open for the fixture and entry fee will be a voluntary donation to the foundation.

NOTICEBOARD Eight days ago, we confirmed the signing of sharp attacker, David Allasan. Hebburn Town are delighted to add the 22-year-old attacker, from Oslo, to our ranks. The Norwegian frontman came through the ranks at Newcastle United, before enjoying a spell with Scunthorpe United's youth set-up. Allasan spent a portion of last season with Romanian third tier side, Gloria Bistrița, prior to appearing in The Hornets' pre-season opener against Gateshead. He gained international clearance in time for our Emirates FA Cup clash at York City, coming on with 63 minutes on the clock in favour of Tom Potter. "It came about as I've been working with Louis Storey

and Jason Miller," Allasan stated upon join. "They introduced me to Kevin [Bolam] and the club, and made me feel welcome. "I trained for a few weeks at the start of pre-season, before I went up to Scotland. "The staff and lads have been great with me, and I'm excited to join the club. "I'd describe myself as a direct, skilful player, who can also play on either the left or right." Today's home clash against Liversedge could see Allasan make his league debut for The Hornets.

The Hornets put in a spirited performance against York City last Saturday, with a large away backing. The first chance of the game fell The Minstermen’s way as Mark Beck was played through in the fourth minute, but fired his effort across the face of goal and narrowly wide. Clayton Donaldson then turned well in the box and his effort stung the palms of Mark Foden before the ball was cleared to safety. The opening goal of the game was after 15 when a long ball to the back post was turned back across goal by Donaldson and, as Foden attempted to claw it away, fell into the path of Michael Woods at close-range. Hebburn were almost back

on level terms just two minutes later when Dylan Archer’s effort from outside the box forced Pete Jameson into a low save, before Tom Devitt couldn’t keep the rebound down. Donaldson's first-time strike and and Olly Dyson's powerful 30-yarder both hit the bar for Steve Watson's side, before a Donaldson header in the second half stuck York 2-0 up. The victory was sealed with six minutes left on the clock when Donaldson stabbed home his second after some more good passing football from the home side. With two minutes left, it should've been four but a stretching Willoughby couldn't connect from sixyards.

PLAYER'S PERSPECTIVE On-loan Gateshead fullback, Kieren Aplin, reflects on Saturday's Emirates FA Cup tie. The left-back started the first hour against The Minstermen - his ninth appearance of the season. "It was good, we enjoyed it," Aplin stated after the fulltime whistle at the LNER Community Stadium. "Having so many [fans] coming down to York, and having their fans as well, there was a lot of people watching. "I feel like we did well in spells - we did well to keep it at 3-0 really. "They had a lot of possession, and we're unlucky to not get a goal ourselves. "[The heat] is difficult, but it's the same for both teams. "We just had to get on with it really."

Aplin also paid tribute to the travelling support, before previewing today's clash. "They're the twelfth man," added the 21-year-old. "They help you push on when you're struggling and need to dig a bit deeper. "It's the same when we're at home, they come in their numbers. "We'll be going for it [against Liversedge]. "They're top of the league, so we'll be looking at that. "We've had a few results where we should've won, so I feel like we can be up there with them.

#24 DAN NEIL Image: Sunderland AFC

HEBBURN HEROES: DAN NEIL Sunderland hotshot, Dan Neil, discusses how his career started in the youth system at The Hornets. The 19-year-old scored his first senior goal on September 11 in League One at the Stadium of Light. The exciting midfielder made his senior debut with The Black Cats in November 2018, appearing off the

in the EFL Trophy. Sixteen first-team appearances later, a total of 1,033 days to be exact, the youngster finds the back of the net. The story goes much deeper than that. Much like Shola Shoretire, Bali

Mumba, Sam Greenwood and thousands of others, Neil started his journey at Hebburn Town Juniors. The heartbeat of young talent on South Tyneside, he spent a number of years in the yellow

and black before being elevated onto pastures new. "My first footballing memories come from Hebburn," he explained. "Going to tots when I was younger, and then playing for Hebburn Blues with a lot of other good players. "I'm very grateful for Hebburn, it's helped me get to where I am today. "When I got to under-nines level, I then had to leave Hebburn which was a bit of a shame. "I'm very grateful for Hebburn, it's helped me get to where I am today. "Hebburn was the place that got me first involved into football. "If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have progressed into under-nines then up the ranks, eventually into the first-team. "Everyone stems from this football club, and I'm extremely grateful towards them." A decade later, Neil is showcasing his prowess in

the third tier, netting in front of 29,830. Of course, that isn't it. Neil's work ethic was rewarded with a new threeyear deal in September 2020, while he was named amongst the subs in March as Sunderland lifted the EFL Trophy at Wembley. Two months later, it was Kevin Bolam's turn to lift a trophy at the national stadium, and Neil hailed The Hornets' present look. "The whole place has had a massive revamp," added the centre-midfielder. "The bar, outside the ground, the pitches, the crowds - it's definitely a club up on the up. "The FA Vase last year especially helped boost spirits in the area - the team were excellent. "I'm sure I'll be coming down to watch a few more games, and hopefully the club can kick on and get promotion soon."

AN INTRODUCTION BY DAVID COULTHARD

We take a look inside today's visitors, league leaders Liversedge. Following the demise of the old rugby club, Liversedge were founded in 1910 and are based in West Yorkshire, where they play their home games at Clayborn. Since starting out in the Bradford League, the club went on to join the West Riding County Amateur League in the early 1920s to the 1970s, aside from a short spell in the Spen Valley League. The Yorkshire League was their next stop as they worked their way from Division Three to Division One before the NCEL. Sedge remained in the NCEL before being promoted to step four last season in a similar points per game scenario as Hebburn. They have won a host of

30

honours during their 111year history including eight divisional titles, the last of which was won in the late 1960s. Their most recent silverware is the Mervyn Bell Memorial Trophy, which they won in July this year. Impressively, Sedge have won all eight of their league fixtures so far this season and have scored 22 goals in the process, conceding just four. They sit three points clear of second-placed Marske United. Last time out in the league, they defeated Pickering Town 5-1 on home soil.

THE INSIDE INFO Liversedge supporter, Matty Davies, lets us in on Sedge's early success this season. We look forward to making the trip up the North East for what will be a good, competitive game. I moved to the local area around a year ago and have always loved this level of football, but where I'm from originally doesn't have a team at this level, so for me it made sense to support Liversedge. It's been a very good start to the season so far, every game has been a battle. Every team has shown why they are at this level, but eight wins in eight is the ideal start for us and gives us the platform to do great things this season. However, we don't look too far ahead and take each game at a time - it's a long season and I'm sure there are more upsets to come.

We have a lot of key players injured at the moment, but one player who's really stood out this season is Ollie Fearon. The fact that he's already an early contender for Golden Boot and won Yorkshire POTM for August speaks volumes for how good he's been so far. Another honourable mention has to go to Nicky Walker, who's been a real asset on the left, had a lot of assists from set pieces and is selfless in providing goals for others. I have ave to go into this one positive, it's going to be a tough game but with the run of form we're on, I'd have to say a 2-0 Sedge win.

KEY MEN

THE GAFFER

Jonathan Rimmington The tactician led Sedge to promotion and the fourth round of the Buildbase FA Vase last season.

SHOT-STOPPER

ROCK SOLID

Jordan Porter

Kevy Tarangadzo

An FA Trophy winner with Halifax, Porter was in between the sticks in last April's Vase meeting.

The experienced 33year-old joined Ammers from Gainsborough Trinity in April. Tarangadzo, who spent time in the Cypriot Second Division, has played eight of Sedge's 10 games this season, having returned in August 2019 from Yorkshire Amateur. The towering defender has contributed to the five clean sheets kept by Rimmington's men thus far in 2021/22, while also finding the back of the net six times last year.

Born in Leeds, Rimmington started his management journey with Rothwell Juniors and Leeds City. A whirlwind year saw Rimmington transition from Liversedge U19s boss to first-team manager in May 2015. He turned Sedge from a relegationthreatened side to NCEL Premier Division third-place finishers, earning a rise to step

team in 2014.

MIDFIELD MAESTRO

Ben Atkinson

A dangerous playmaker most recently of the National League North, Atkinson has already bagged four goals. Atkinson caught the eye at Huddersfield Town's youth system, securing a move to Curzon Ashton upon release. Spending two years under Adam Lakeland, he made the short move to Brighouse Town before his former boss recaptured him at Farsley Celtic. He spent four years at The Citadel, making over 150 appearances, before leaving in the summer.

DANGER MAN

ONE TO WATCH

The sharp attacker, traditionally used on the right flank, will play in the absence of suspended Joe Walton. A product of Barnsley's youth set-up, Fearon made his senior debut at 16 for Worsbrough Bridge. The energetic forward would enjoy time with likes of Maltby Main, Frickley Athletic and AFC Mansfield, where he gained promotion to tier eight in 2018. After a short stint with Handsworth, he moved to Clayborn one year later, scoring seven so far this season to rank number one in the charts.

The thrilling winger holds two League Two appearances to his name. Walker, a former Rotherham United prospect, made his debut against Cheltenham Town in 2012 before making six appearances on loan at Barrow. Unable to get game time at Wycombe Wanderers and Grimsby Town, he moved to Boston United, playing 27 times.

Oliver Fearon

Nicky Walker

Following stints at Buxton, Shaw Lane and Gainsborough Trinity, he returned to Boston before a season with Alfreton Town.

LAST TIME WE MET We recap a comprehensive performance in last year's Buildbase FA Vase, on April 17. Kevin Bolam's side returned from a four-month absence with a battling victory on South Tyneside. The Hornets welcomed Jonathan Rimmington's side in the fourth round, and nearly got off to the perfect start on 10 minutes as Darren Lough hooked a loose ball wide from 20-yards. On 31 minutes, the hosts took the lead as Amar Purewal headed home Michael Richardson's left-sided corner. Four minutes later, a Sedge corner wasn't dealt with, allowing Oliver Fearon to smack off the bar before Alfie Raw blasted over. Seconds later, Tom Greaves was played through, with the veteran poking past Mark Foden one-on-one. Louis Storey dispossessed a Sedge attacker on 42 minutes the area, with penalty shouts being waved away by the

referee. On the 51 mark, Jack Stockdill unleashed fire from 30-yards, which Foden stopped low down. Sedge 'keeper Jordan Porter was nearly shown red for hacking down Graeme Armstrong on the edge, with Michael McKeown's free-kick unable to beat the first man. Foden made a great save to deny Greaves with 70 on the clock, before McKeown was released at the other end for a driven finish to win the tie. Hebburn Town XI: Foden, Groves, Storey, Devitt, Lough, Carson, McKeown, Spence, Richardson, Potter (Martin, 89'), Purewal, Armstrong

FROM THE ARCHIVES James Main relives our first game of last season, as we welcomed Hemsworth Miners Welfare. Hebburn Town overcame The Wells in the Emirates FA Cup at The Green Energy Sports Ground. Amar Purewal put The Hornets in front in the 16th minute, before his side were pegged back by Jason Davies in the 24th minute. Kevin Bolam’s side went into the break one ahead however thanks to Graeme Armstrong’s penalty in the 43rd minute, and then Michael McKeown added a third before Armstrong got a second with eight to go. Bolam gave Purewal his competitive debut for the club, but left the other three summer signings – Andy Coulson, Luke Salmon and Damen Mullen on the bench. On the win, the Hebburn manager said: “We’ve dominated the game, dominated possession. I think 4-1 has flattered them

[Hemsworth] in a way, I think we could’ve possibly scored a couple more goals at least but all in all, we’re through to the next round so I’m pleased with that.” The game came just days before the Buildbase FA Vase semi-final classic at Corinthian. FOOTBALLING FIRSTS Hebburn-born attacker, Olly Martin, goes through his career on the pitch with a selection of memories. First memory? Playing at under-sevens at Monkton Stadium on the big pitch. That was like Wembley at the time. Think we won around 6-1 and I scored! First inspiration? Watching Messi growing up on the TV. First pair of boots? A pair of Copa Mundials back in the day. First shirt? Probably a toon kit when I was quite young. First manager? Richie McLaughlin and Mick Mulhern for Jarrow Roofing, they were great with me!

First goal? For Jarrow Roofing in the FA Cup. I can't remember the team who it was against, but it was quite a distance away. Cut inside, left foot - good goal to be fair. First celebration? The Alan Shearer! Always has been, just the one arm in the air. First cup? Under-sevens cup final in Monkton, can't remember what it was called. Brilliant memories.

JUNIORS SECTION We were backed by a large number of Hebburn Town Junior members at York City. On Saturday, 394 packed the away end in the LNER Community Stadium, with nearly a third from our youth set-up. The total figure of parents and players on our Junior coaches was 120. Due to the disappointment of the 2020 Buildbase FA Vase final taking place behind closed doors at Wembley, we offered free travel to all existing members at the weekend. "Both Junior members and spectators missed out on the opportunity to visit Wembley for the FA Vase final earlier this year in May," said Director of Football, Stephen Rutherford. "It was a huge occasion that would have attracted lots of interest from our 600 Junior members and their parents. "As such, we had planned to

organise free away travel back then but the season was curtailed, however the Emirates FA Cup trip to York City allowed us to reignite the opportunity. "In someway, it was a more appealing opportunity. "It was only 90 minutes away, so Junior members played their Saturday morning games, jumped on the coach and enjoyed the day with their parents, making lots of noise in the away end at the LNER Community Stadium. "Making the travel free to members also allowed parents to just think about the entry costs at the game, thus not making it such an expensive day out."

FAN ZONE Long-serving Hebburn Town supporter, Anth Hanley describes his affiliation with The Hornets. I've always been into Hebburn Town - I'm a Hebburn lad and played for the Juniors. After that, I coached a few of the teams such as the tots and I also started the mashup. I'm good mates with Stephen Rutherford, so we started pushing on supporting the first-team. Wembley was gutting for us me and my son had been to pretty much every away game, including Corinthian which was phenomenal, so watching on the TV was just a bit surreal. It was great the lads won though, it raised the town massively. Last Saturday was brilliant. I've got friends who are Sunderland supporters who've never been to a

Hebburn game, but they were sitting alongside Newcastle fans, enjoying it. To have all the Juniors there as well, it was amazing. The mood was always good when they scored, we got louder! We've been unlucky with injuries, but if we play like we can on our day - we can beat anybody. I always try to think positive, so today should be a challenge to relish, especially at home. I'll predict a Hebburn 2-1 win, it's got to be an Olly Martin goal! I've sponsored Tom Devitt, so hopefully he nicks a header as well.
