THE GAFFER'S NOTES KEVIN BOLAM
GOOD EVENING EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO TODAY'S ISSUE OF THE HORNETS PRIOR TO A RETURN TO LEAGUE ACTION AGAINST YORKSHIRE AMATUER. I thought it was a really rewarding performance for the type of performance it was on Saturday. We got our noses in front really early in the game, and then it became a bit backs to the wall. We done a little work on Ashton, we knew the players that could possibly hurt us. To be fair, we handled it really well as a unit. I said to Mick [Mulhern] in the last 15 minutes, I fancy us to get one on the counter. We had two fantastic chances to wrap the game
up, but games are going to pan out like that when they're getting bodies forward. We were a little bit surprised with how direct they went in the second half. We're not going to win the FA Cup, but the longer we stay in there and bring some money into the club is great. We went with a front four on one thing and one thing only, which was goals. Danny Carson in the middle of the park, playing out of position again, was outstanding. Young Dylan Archer looked like
a season pro - he had a fantastic game. Carl Taylor came on early and did fantastic at leftback. My two centrebacks headed everything - my skipper at rightback led the side exceptionally well. The whole 14 played a huge part. Yorkshire Amateur made eight changes when we last played them that tie has no baring whatsoever on tonight. They're in the top half of the league, so we know it's going to be a difficult game.

FROM THE DRESSING ROOM MARK FODEN
HELLO TO EVERYONE AND WELCOME BACK TO THE GREEN ENERGY SPORTS GROUND FOR TONIGHT'S GAME. At the weekend, it was a good, professional performance in the FA Cup. The boys defended very well, and got a bit lucky also which we needed. After a few loses, it was vital to get a result like that. Amar [Purewal] took his chance well, so all in all, it's something to build on. You want to be playing against good teams and tested to your maximum, so it's a real confidence booster. It won't mean anything though if we don't take it into tonight - we
need to make sure we can pick up some points. The games we've played at home so far have been decided by fine margins, and Yorkshire Amateur will be a tough side again. We obviously beat them 7-0 a few weeks ago, albeit they played a weaker team, but they'll still be looking to prove a point. We want two wins over them as it'll stand us in good stead, especially when we play them away later in the season. Hopefully they play their strongest side,
and we can match it to get our first three points. It's early days in the season, I don't think the league table dictates anything. We won't end up at the bottom tonight is a pretty even game. Like most of the teams we've played, Amateur have had a good start. They won't carry it on for the full year, and we won't keep falling marginally short. If we want to do anything in this league, we need to make home a fortress, so I'd love to see everyone backing us tonight.

RESULTS RECAP We've picked up our first point of the season since the last issue of The Hornets. Pickering Town held Kevin Bolam's side to a 2-2 draw on South Tyneside. A fortnight ago, Jackson Jowett's long-ranged effort stuck The Pikes in front, but Connor Bell tapped home Kieren Aplin's cross seconds later to equalise. Olly Martin, in a Hitachi Man of the Match performance, struck low into the bottom right corner on the 62 mark to make it 2-1. Hebburn were unable to secure the three points, however, as Jowett fired into the top corner for his second on 77 minutes.

Following the point midweek, Bolam's men visited fresh Ossett United on August 28. The hosts' Nash Connolly broke the deadlock on six minutes after early pressure, as he got on the end of Harry Gagen's ball at the back stick. The number seven bagged a brace with 21 on the clock, as another cross from the right saw Mark Foden save James Walshaw's effort, but the rebound fell kindly. Returning from injury, Amar Purewal got his account up and running on 25 minutes after prodding home Aplin's driven cross at the front post. The Hornets probed, but were unable to find a second.

NOTICEBOARD The second round qualifying draw of the Emirates FA Cup was yesterday afternoon. Kevin Bolam's outfit will play their third away game on the bounce in the prestigious competition. The cup adventure began for The Hornets as we dismissed Yorkshire Amateur 7-0 on the road. Strikes from Connor Bell, Michael Richardson, Olly Martin and Robbie Spence handed Hebburn Town our first win of the season. After a league defeat at Ossett United, Bolam's men looked to bounce back against Ashton United. The hosts were a level above Hebburn, but Amar Purewal's finish in the first 45 secured a terrific cup upset. In the second round qualifying, we have been drawn away to York City on
Saturday, September 18 at 3pm. We visit the National League North giants' newlyconstructed York Community Stadium just a few days after a league clash at Shildon. Forty-nine places separate the two clubs, with Steve Watson's side currently sitting in mid-table. In partnership with Stanley Travel, seats on our supporters coach cost just £ 10. The coach will depart The Green Energy Sports Ground at 11:30am, and bookings must be made by September 16 by paying in cash at Hebburn Sports Club.

Kevin Bolam's side sent Ashton United out in an Emirates FA Cup upset on Saturday afternoon. The Hornets travelled to Hurst Cross in the first round qualifying, and broke the deadlock on nine minutes. Michael Richardson's swinging free-kick wasn't cleared at the front post, allowing Amar Purewal to prod home for two in two. On the 18 mark, a cleared Ashton corner fell for Ben Hardcastle to hit, with the number two’s effort going wide. With 21 on the clock, Tom Bentham’s pass sent Jack Redshaw through on goal, but Mark Foden denied the ex-York City striker superbly. Redshaw had a goal disallowed for offside, while
'keeper Oliver Martin stopped Connor Bell’s clear chance at the other end. On 28 minutes, Sam Sheridan’s free-kick was nodded over for the hosts at close-range. The side from tier seven continued the pressure, as Bentham headed Redshaw’s corner over from six-yards. Twelve minutes from time, Purewal nodded Bell through, with the striker unable to get past Martin one-on-one. Redshaw’s header hit the side netting for The Robins, while Hardcastle’s effort inside the box was met low by Foden in injury time. At the death, Bell was in the clear, but Martin claimed the forward’s chipped strike to keep it 1-0.

PLAYER'S PERSPECTIVE Match-winner Amar Purewal discusses a 'solid' display against Ashton United on Saturday. The forward bagged his second of the season on nine minutes, punting past Oliver Martin from a free-kick. "I thought we started off well," Purewal expressed. "We got the goal and it was backs to the wall in the second half, but we defended really well as a unit. "I think we deserved it [the win]. "We said we could expose them from set-pieces. "It's always nice to score in any game, especially for myself to continue on. "I know it's the FA Cup, but hopefully we can take the momentum into the league. "Coming back [from injury] and scoring two in the last two games has been great,
and hopefully I can take it on to Tuesday." The Hornets welcome Yorkshire Amateur to The Green Energy Sports Ground at 7:45pm, with Kevin Bolam's men having already beat Ammers 7-0 just a few weeks ago. "The league is the bread and butter really," the striker continued. "We need to start picking up some results. "Obviously they've all been close games, so hopefully we can get a win to kick start our season."

#19 CEDWYN SCOTT
THANK YOU, CEDWYN We go in-depth with former Hornets' frontman, Cedwyn Scott. The 22-year-old penned terms at The Green Energy Sports Ground from Dunston in January 2020. The prolific poacher bagged four goals in five games during his first few weeks with the club before the
season was halted. The 2020/21 campaign brought a vein of form even more spectacular, as the former Dundee man notched 22 goals in 17 appearances across all competitions. "I can only look
back at my time at Hebburn with fond memories," Scott expressed. "Joining the club originally, I just wanted to showcase what I was about. "It was very much stop-start in terms
of the games. "I was here for 12 months, but it didn't feel like that long due to the number of games we played compared to normal seasons. "We were very successful and only lost a handful of matches, so I really enjoyed it. "It was a shame the two seasons were put to a close as I would've liked to play more consistently to get a few more goals. "Overall, I can't complain too much though as I'd like to think I did what was asked of me. "All the players and staff were spot on with me, and that played a big part in my confidence." Formerly of Huddersfield Town's ranks, the striker hit the ground running on
South Tyneside. After making his debut as a substitute in the dramatic Buildbase FA Vase injury-time win at Longridge Town, his first start came on home soil. A record-breaking 1,705 packed The Green Energy Sports Ground to see Kevin Bolam's outfit face Plymouth Parkway in the quarter-finals. Two strikes from Scott in the first 45 sent The Hornets another step closer to Wembley. "The full spell at Hebburn was good to be honest, I couldn't really chose a favourite memory," he stated. "If I had to pinpoint one game, the Plymouth game was top class. "Playing a fundamental role in front of a huge crowd was excellent for me personally.
"I didn't play too well in the Corinthian game unfortunately, but that was nice to play in due to how big the occasion was for the club. "The Vase run meant a lot to the club, so to represent them was a privilege." The Hornets' cup adventure would be concluded at the home of English football, as they battled Consett behind-closeddoors. The wait, however, meant Scott had departed Hebburn for a professional deal. "Of course I would've liked to play at Wembley in a massive game. "The most important thing, though, was that the club won the FA Vase. "I played my part in
the earlier rounds, so I'm happy with that. "I was gutted to not be there in person because supporters weren't allowed in. "I was watching at home, and there was an immense feeling of pride when Louis [Storey] lifted the trophy. "The coaches and the lads worked tirelessly, so it was very much deserved." Following a trial with Newcastle United, Scott's move was sealed as League Two play-off contenders, Carlisle United, made contact. "I wouldn't change anything because I have to be ambitious. "It was out of my hands, but I was frustrated to not see the season out with Hebburn.
20
"It turned out alright in the end as we won the final and the club were promoted. "In terms of myself, I make no secret that I didn't play as much as I wanted at Carlisle. "It was a good experience nonetheless, playing in the Football League every week." The attacker made seven outings for the Cumbrian outfit, before looking for a new challenge in May. Our Tyneside neighbours, Gateshead, was his destination in the National League North. "I signed at Gateshead in the summer and I've been loving it ever since. "I knew a few of the boys beforehand, so they've helped me settle in.
"Just like Hebburn, they're a great group, and hopefully we can emulate the same success. "I obviously spoke to Louis a few months ago, and he's joined me here. "He's exactly the same bloke - we know each other really well. "We've had a great start to the season, so we're looking to build on that." And the marksman still very much keeps tabs on his former side. "When Gateshead aren't playing, I try to watch Hebburn as I'm still connected to a few of the lads. "I wish Kevin [Bolam] and the squad all the very best this season. "If they keep doing what's got them here, it'll be an exciting year."
IF U CARE SHARE If U Care Share Foundation are here to save lives, support communities and prevent suicide. If U Care Share was established 16 years ago in memory of Daniel O'Hare from Lumley, near Chester-le-Street who took his own life at the age of 19. Daniel had no previous history of mental health problems nor had he shown any outward signs of his intention. He was a normal young man, who was extremely popular and well known in his local community and had a large amount of friends and a family who loved him dearly. He enjoyed football, spending time with friends and socialising. He also had a job managing a family online retail
business and to this day his family remain devastated by their loss and are still no nearer to understanding Daniel's choice. His younger brothers Matthew and Ben, along with cousin Sarah (then aged 10, five and 12) set up the foundation because they wanted to do something positive and prevent another family suffering a similar experience, as well as creating a lasting memory to Daniel. The family started selling wristbands at football clubs featuring the message if u care share and raised over £50,000 for mental health charities.
In 2011, IUCSF became a registered charity with three main aims: Prevention, intervention & support of those bereaved by suicide. The charity provides support to those who have lost loved ones to suicide, help and advice to those who are at risk of taking their own life and deliver workshops on mental health education and suicide prevention in schools, Premier League and Football League clubs and businesses and community organisations across the UK to promote positive mental health. The North East still has the highest rate of suicide in the country and suicide continues to be the biggest killer of men under 50 and young people under 25.
INSIDE OUT Bring what’s on the Inside, Out. #AskMeWhy. If U Care Share has launched its annual Inside Out campaign to encourage people to wear their clothes 'Inside Out' for the day and promote suicide awareness and prevention on Friday September 10, 2021. The campaign already has the support of Newcastle United, Sunderland and Middlesbrough and Premier League, EFL and WSL clubs such as Tottenham, Norwich, Burnley, Northampton and Bradford are also taking part as they have in previous years. The charity also wants employers, in small and large businesses, to encourage workers to wear their clothes Inside Out for the day - or the specially provided Inside Out T-shirts and #AskMeWhy stickers - and post
photos on social media with #AskMeWhy hashtag. Inside Out Day is part of World Suicide Prevention Day, held on September 10, by the International Association for Suicide Prevention to raise awareness of suicide and suicide prevention. If U Care Share, who are Premier League and English Football League (EFL) partners, are now hoping football clubs across the country will support the campaign which is aimed at opening up conversations, one of the main ethos of the foundation. Foundation founder Matthew Smith said: "We truly believe that talking can save lives. That's why we set up our charity, and the Inside Out campaign was created to raise
awareness of the issues surrounding mental health. "Suicide turns lives Inside Out, we want you to bring the conversation from the Inside, Out. "We hold our own Inside Out Day to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day every year - a day where we encourage our supporters to wear an item of clothing Inside Out. "It sparks conversation. People ask "why are you wearing your clothes inside out?" Hence the hashtag Askmewhy. It highlights the importance of talking - bringing what's on the Inside, Out. "This simple act can start a conversation, and just might save a life by helping someone to open up about mental health and suicide."

AN INTRODUCTION BY DAVID COULTHARD
We take a look inside tonight's opposition, Yorkshire Amateur. Arriving from the Potternewton area in Leeds this evening are Ammers, who Hebburn knocked out of the FA Cup just a few weeks ago. The club was founded in 1918 and originally played at Elland Road after Leeds City folded, however just a couple of years later, they sold the lease to Leeds United and moved on to groundshare with Harrogate Town. By 1922, they had moved to their present home, Bracken Edge. The Ammers were founder members of the Yorkshire League in 1920 and won three divisional titles, as well as the League Cup during their membership. They are also three-time winners of both the West Riding FA Challenge Cup
30
and more recently the West Riding County Cup, which they last won in 1972. Their most recent accolade is the Wilkinson Sword Trophy, which they won in 1999 whilst members of the NCEL. Like Hebburn, Yorkshire Amateur were promoted to step four ahead of this campaign after the 2020/21 season was curtailed. They had previously been promoted to step five following 2017/18. The Ammers' league form has been mixed thus far, beating Worksop Town, Bridlington Town and Lincoln United, while loses to Marske United and Stocksbridge Park Steels.
THE INSIDE INFO Club secretary at Yorkshire Amateur, Ben Slack gives us an insight into today's opponents. Good evening everyone, we can't wait to visit The Green Energy Sports Ground tonight. When I stopped playing about six years ago, I came to Yorkshire Amateur as a supporter, but got roped in as the club's solicitor and now I'm acting as secretary. On the field, it's been a couple of frustrating years for everyone, but it was great to move up to the Northern Premier League last year. We feel it vindicates the efforts of the players, management and backroom staff. This season has been mixed so far - we had a couple of great wins before disappointing defeats to yourselves and Marske. That said, we would've taken
this start had you offered it before we got underway, and we're still very much finding our feet at this level. We have a lot of talent in our squad, but on his day, Casey Stewart is a special player for us. Hopefully today doesn't finish 7-0 like the last game! We're both new to this league, and the step up is evident as teams play for the full 90 unlike games in the past. I'm looking forward to the journey up and hopefully it'll make for an entertaining game.

Craig Ogilvie & Neil Sibson The duo have been in the Ammers' dugout since April 2020, and recently signed twoyear extensions.
The experienced 33year-old joined Ammers from Gainsborough Trinity in April. Capable of playing upfront, the former England C man made 18 appearances for Bradford City between 2006 and 2009, nine of which in League One. Ainge donned the shirt for Guiseley over 100 times across four years, gaining promotion to the sixth tier, before spells with Halifax Town, Bradford PA, Harrogate Town and Darlington.

The 31-year-old, who was unable to impress on trial at Grimsby, was released in 2010 and linked up with Guiseley. Sharry has since plied his trade for Worksop, Droylsden, Ossett Albion and Town.
DANGER MAN
ONE TO WATCH
The energetic frontman, who joined Ammers in November 2018, has netted four goals from six. The fans' favourite spent six years as a youngster at Bradford City, prior to battling relegation with Harrogate Railway. The left-footed marksman, previously of Ossett United, enjoyed a number of seasons with Liversedge before departing Clayborn for Bracken Edge. Fogarty bagged a brace against Lincoln United last week, while also striking past Worksop and Bridlington Town.
The exciting playmaker scored the opener against Lincoln United 10 days ago. The versatile attacker came through the ranks at Sheffield United after time with the i2i Academy, and broke into the Tadcaster Albion squad in January 2018. LAST TIME WE MET We look back at our first win of the season against Ammers last month in the Emirates FA Cup. Kevin Bolam's side were clinical in front of goal, securing an enthralling 7-0 away victory. The Hornets travelled to Leeds in the preliminary round, and broke the deadlock on 11 minutes as Connor Bell looped a header into the top corner. Ali Alshabeeb's cross gave Michael Richardson the chance to poke home on the 28 mark for two. Mark Bower spilled Kieren Aplin's cross on 35 minutes, allowing Olly Martin to stab in at the back stick for his first of the afternoon. Bell found Richardson with 38 on the clock, who set Martin at close-range to make it 4-0 before the break. The torrential rain continued in the second period, as did Hebburn's rich vein of goalscoring form, with Bell releasing Richardson at close-

range 46 seconds in. Martin hit the post with a curling effort, before he squared the ball across goal for Bell's second moments later. Fernando Moke was shown red for the hosts after raising his hands to Richardson near the hour. Robbie Spence came on for Mark McLeod on 62 minutes and made an instant impact, as he headed Richardson's cross from a short corner past Bower at the front post for seven. Hebburn Town XI: Foden, Groves, Donaghy, Devitt, Aplin (Potter, 68'), Carson, McLeod (Spence, 62'), Richardson (Taylor, 77'), Alshabeeb, Martin, Bell

FROM THE ARCHIVES James Main recaps the views of Luke Sullivan following our largest ever victory. Hebburn Town dismissed Birtley Town 13-0 in the Northern League Cup back in October 2019. Goals from Carl Taylor, Olly Martin, Luke Sullivan, Michael Richardson, Lewis Suddick, Louis Storey and Ben DibbFuller separated the two sides on the night. By the halfway stage, The Hornets were already 6-0 up on an evening where everything went right for them. Manager Kevin Bolam didn’t name his strongest side, but there were some regulars who featured. He gave starts to ‘keeper Conor Grant and full back Lewis Horner, and this turned out to be one of the duo’s only appearances for the club. tonight and it was our night. "I think the majority of the shots that were hit and the chances that got put in went in, which is always good. FOOTBALLING FIRSTS Our frontman, Connor Bell, takes us through his footballing journey with a number of memories. First memory? Playing for Durham City in the Russell Foster Youth League with my group of mates, when I was about seven or eight-year-old. First inspiration? Wayne Rooney. I'm a Man United fan so that's a pretty easy one. First pair of boots? The T90s that Rooney used to wear, think they were either the red or blue ones. First shirt? A Sunderland shirt - I was part of their academy. Some of my family are Newcastle fans and some are Sunderland, but I think they were trying to force me into that when I started playing for them. First manager? John Robertson at Inverness. I think he was Hearts' top scorer ever. He was really good with me - obviously I travelled quite far from home.
First senior game? Against Dundee United at home in the Scottish Championship - some really good memories from that. First goal? Against Queen of the South for Inverness about three weeks after my debut, so it was good to get off the mark early. First cup? The only cup I've ever won was the Iron Bru Cup, which is like the version of the League Cup up in Scotland. Again, I had some great memories from that, and it was a decent night out afterwards as well.

FA YOUTH CUP Stephen Hymers' outfit were outscored by Spennymoor Town in front of 259 a week ago. The newly-appointed U18s boss hailed his side's determination in the 5-3 preliminary round defeat. Jack Evans rounded 'keeper Dylan Arkley early in the evening, before Sam Peat doubled The Moors' lead. Lewis Rutherford's header gave Hebburn a lifeline, but Peat and Evans struck again after the break. Rutherford harshly had two goals disallowed for offside, before he did get his second on 70 minutes. Josh Pollard came off the bench to make it 4-3 with 15 to go, but nine-men Spennymoor made sure with Evans' injury-time penalty. "All the lads are disappointed to be honest," Hymers said after the cup exit. "Some of them are apologising, but actually they played some outstanding

football. "It's a massive learning curve for them - they showed great fighting spirit to get it back to 4-3. "A few decisions didn't go our way, and another day we could've pegged it level. "It's about moving on from this now and looking forward to the league season. "The youth and inexperience showed a little bit," he added. "I think nerves got to a few lads and they struggled to get into the game early on. "We let them score two within the first 20 minutes, which is quite out of character for us, so the occasion probably didn't help us at the start. "I'm proud of them, as are the club - Vin [Pearson] came in and congratulated everyone at full-time." 47
FAN ZONE Club statistician and committee member, Stephen Newton, tell his story at Hebburn Town. I first started having an interest in Hebburn in 1991 when I moved from South Shields. I had just finished a 20-year role in the running of the South Shields Sunday League, and wanted to spend some time watching football instead of being hands on. After watching the team for a couple of years, I was asked if I would be interested in becoming secretary. I agreed and probably broke the record for the shortest tenure in that position in the club's history, when I stepped aside after a week for Tom Derek but remained on the committee where I've been for 27 years. A new adventure will prove difficult to adapt to and every point will have to be fought for, there will be no easy
games in this league. The start to the season has been blighted by the number of players unavailable - I think once everyone is back and fit, we will see a change in fortunes. The league results so far have been difficult to except, going down by the odd goal. Today will be a game where the team need to be at their best, the Yorkshire lads will be all out for revenge for the cup result. I would imagine it will be a different looking team that faces us tonight, however if our lads go about their business as they are capable of doing then I would predict a 3-1 Hebburn win.
