THE GAFFER'S NOTES KEVIN BOLAM
HELLO EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO TODAY'S ISSUE OF THE HORNETS BEFORE OUR SECOND HOME LEAGUE GAME OF THE SEASON. I'd like to wish Pickering Town a safe journey up to the North East this evening. It was nice to get our first win of the season on Saturday against Yorkshire Amateur. However, similar to our two previous league defeats which I didn't get too down about, I won't get overly excited by it. It was the Emirates FA Cup and we're through to the next round. The most pleasing thing was from an attacking point of view, the lads looked a really big threat. It was good to
share the goals out amongst the side there were goals in a lot of the lads out there. Connor [Bell] done very well in the nine role on Wednesday and Saturday, but it's hard to single anyone out. We've had some really good team performances, and I know Yorkshire made a lot of changes, but we're pleased to be through. We don't have the squad to do that we had 16 on Saturday, with young Robbie Gateshill on the bench and Nelson [Ogbewe]
returning from injury. We played the last 25 minutes on Saturday with a different system hopefully it's something we can look at again in the near future. We need that in our locker as teams will occasionally do their homework. When we went to three at the back, I thought we found some good areas high up the pitch. The main concern now is tonight's match and getting started in the league. It'll be a tough game at home against Pickering.

FROM THE DRESSING ROOM JACK DONAGHY
GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME TO THE HORNETS AHEAD OF OUR THIRD LEAGUE GAME OF THE SEASON. Our performance on Saturday was mint - there isn't much more you could want. It was a really good showing from everyone - we were clinical in front of goal. I'm just a bit gutted I didn't get one - them 30-yard shots normally fly straight into the top corner! Getting a clean sheet is always nice as well. We pressed high up the pitch and limited their chances, so we deserved that. We've had two tough opening games, so securing our first win in that
manner is perfect. Hopefully the momentum can start flowing and we can kick on in the league. The game was obviously in the Emirates FA Cup, so we're pleased to have progressed, which was the main thing. We're not focusing too far ahead, today is our primary objective, but I am looking forward to the next test against Ashton United. The energy and commitment we're showing stands us in good stead, so it'd be nice to get a good run of form. Today's game
against Pickering is a good opportunity to continue that. They've had three straight defeats, but we can't overlook them. They're the underdogs and will most likely change their system to surprise us. The Frickley game was very tight - they came with a plan and stuck to it. Against Stockton, we were up against it but showed effort and only lost late. We're yet to pick up some points, so on home turf against a team who are also yet to win should create a great game.

RESULTS RECAP We recap our previous two league fixtures since the last issue. Frickley Athletic visited The Green Energy Sports Ground on the opening day. Chances were at a premium, with only Tom Devitt's early header proving a scare but Frickley cleared off the line. On the hour mark, Jack Donaghy wiped down Brad Wells, with Lee Frecklington narrowly squeezing the penalty past Mark Foden. The Blues would miss two open goals in an action-filled injury time, while Danny Burns saw red for elbowing Michael Richardson. The West Yorkshire side held on and secured the 1-0 win.

Only a few days later, Kevin Bolam's side visited fellow newcomers, Stockton Town. Mikey Roberts got on the end of Kev Hayes' back stick ball on 18 minutes to open the scoring. Hayes struck over from closerange a few moments later, before Jamie Owens struck the post. The Hornets eventually found their footing and fired level through Connor Bell before the break. Hayes missed another big opportunity on 83 minutes, as his effort was saved by Foden's feet, prior to snatching the winner on the 90 with a tricky effort into the bottom corner.

NOTICEBOARD The first round qualifying draw of the Emirates FA Cup was made at 1pm yesterday. Kevin Bolam's outfit will again hit the road in the world's oldest football competition. Following a 7-0 jubilation at Yorkshire Amateur at the weekend, Hebburn Town will face Ashton United on Saturday, September 4. The Hornets will make the journey to Manchester to shape up against the Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division outfit. Michael Clegg's men have only played once at Hurst Cross so far this season, as they defeated Matlock Town 2-0 on the opening day. Thomas Bentham and Jack Redshaw fired the The Robins to victory in the first half. After a late draw away to Scarborough Athletic in
midweek, Ashton succumbed to a 2-1 loss at Mickleover on Saturday, with Bentham netting his second of the season. They currently sit 13th in the table, with 26 places between the two sides. Following tonight's game against Pickering and a trip to Ossett United on Saturday, Hebburn will have a full week to prepare for the cup tie. The Robins welcome Whitby Town this evening, before also hosting Stafford Rangers on Saturday. Clegg's side will then play Stalybridge Celtic away on Monday, August 30.

Kevin Bolam's side secured a first win of the season in enthralling fashion on Saturday afternoon. The Hornets travelled to Leeds in the Emirates FA Cup preliminary round, and broke the deadlock on 11 minutes as Connor Bell looped a header into the top corner. Ali Alshabeeb's cross allowed Michael Richardson to poke home on the 28 mark. Mark Bower spilled Kieren Aplin's cross on 35 minutes, allowing Olly Martin to stab in at the back stick for three. Bell found Richardson with 38 on the clock, who set Martin at close-range to make it 4-0 before the break. It took 46 seconds in the second period for the goal trail to rebegin, as Richardson was released by Bell from
only a few yards out. Martin hit the post with a curling effort, before he squared the ball across goal for Bell's second moments later. Fernando Moke was shown red for the hosts after raising his hands to Richardson near the hour. Robbie Spence came on for Mark McLeod on 62 minutes and made an instant impact, as he headed Richardson's cross past Bower at the front post. Alshabeeb was then denied a header by the hand of Bower, before Richardson's 25-yard free-kick whistled narrowly past the top corner. Jack Donaghy tried his luck from 30-yards, but Bower got down low and kept the score at 7-0.

PLAYER'S PERSPECTIVE Michael Richardson felt Saturday's Emirates FA Cup win was vital for Kevin Bolam's side. The midfielder began his tally at the weekend, netting a brace past Ammers' Mark Bower. "It was a very good performance," Richardson said after the final whistle. "It always helps when the pitch is like that, it's easier for the team to pass the ball around. "They've made a few changes, and I'm hearing it's not their normal team, but you can only beat what's in front of you. "We got a lot of goals and a clean sheet so happy days. "As long as we won and got through into the next round that's all that counts." The torrential weather in Leeds continued throughout the 90, and Richardson explains how that helped Hebburn's game plan.
"When you play on a lot of dry, bumpy pitches, the ball bobbles - you concentrate more on the ball than finding your next pass. "When it's soaking, it sticks to the grass, which was also quite long. "Olly [Martin] slipped in a few puddles in the first half, but other than that, it helped us. "If we could play on that every week, I think we would. "You never want to be on the end of a defeat," he added. "It was important we got the win, so we'll take that into Pickering and start from minute one."

#5 LOUIS STOREY
THANK YOU, LOUIS We chat to last season's skipper, Louis Storey, following his move to Gateshead in the summer. A natural leader, Storey arrived at The Green Energy Sports Ground from South Shields in 2018. Adept in defence and midfielder, the 27-year-old appeared a total of 89 times for The Hornets, scoring 15.
"My time at Hebburn was an absolute pleasure," the 27-year-old stated. "I joined the club at a turning point with the new owners and a new vision. "I'm very proud of what I achieved at
the football club. "The guys at Hebburn gave me a platform to develop as a person and grow as a footballer, and I'm hugely thankful. "It's lead me to where I am now, which is back in
full-time football. "I look back with the fondest of memories." The former Newcastle United youngster took the armband for The Hornets, while veteran striker Graeme Armstrong became vicecaptain in the summer of 2018. The pair were fundamental to the club, as we gained promotion and won the Buildbase FA Vase in 2021. "It felt like the end of an era and the start of a new chapter. "When we first joined the club, we set the bar high and laid out two main objectives - to get out of the Northern League and do well in the FA Vase. "They were unbelievable experiences and will stick with me
forever. "The proudest moment of my career was lifting the Vase at Wembley. "It meant so much to the football club, the community, but most importantly to the individuals behind it all. "I'd like to think myself and Graeme moving on left behind a legacy. "We hopefully changed the principles, and gave everyone new beliefs and expectations. "The group of players Kev [Bolam] has are great. "The team which we were a part of, plus the new additions, seem to have harnessed that identity and are ready to move forward. "I'm excited to watch as a fan from afar."
A turbulent FA Vase run will live long in the memory for many on South Tyneside, and Storey describes the adventure as his favourite memory in the yellow and black. "I was an unused sub for South Shields in their FA Vase final, in a season which was massively hindered by injury. "I promised myself then I would do it properly, and I did so with Hebburn Town. "That's something nobody can take away from me. "Looking back though, Corinthian was a final in itself. "I said after the game, I've never seen so much character and spirit from a team before. "What we overcame on that day was nothing short of
fantastic. "To be a man down and 2-1 down, but to take the game to penalties was mental. "The referee was questionable, we were away from home, we were given setbacks, but we managed to get through it. "Longridge away is another class memory, where Robbie [Spence] poked home the winner right at the death in injury time. "If we go back even further, the City of Liverpool game in the Vase run beforehand was also superb. "It all shows what Hebburn Town is about. "We had a togetherness which made us unstoppable on our day. "That proved through
20
when we needed results the most, which makes me most proud." Storey departed The Green Energy Sports Ground in June, as The Heed offered him a role as playercoach. He made his National League North debut on Saturday afternoon, playing the full 90 as our neighbours won 3-1 against Kettering Town, with exHornets Cedwyn Scott bagging a brace. "I couldn't turn down the move to Gateshead," Storey explained. "It's an opportunity back into the fulltime game. "I'm excited to go higher and face new challenges, but I'm gutted to say goodbye. "If I wasn't at Hebburn, I wouldn't be in this position,
so I'm forever grateful. "They gave me a chance to express myself and made me captain. "My sincerest thanks goes to everyone. From those on the committee, the management team, the players, the incredible supporters and volunteers - I've loved every second. "Good luck in the new challenge - I know the lads will do the community proud. "My final message to the boys is to take pride in representing a fantastic club like Hebburn Town. "Thank you for everything."

AN INTRODUCTION BY DAVID COULTHARD
Pickering Town travel to the North East from North Yorkshire this evening. The Pikes were founded in 1888 and have competed in many leagues over the years, including the York League and the Northern Counties East Football League, before being promoted to step four in 2018. The side from Mill Lane have many honours to their name such as eight divisional titles, but their most famous trophy in recent times is the North Riding Senior Cup, which they won in 2013 by beating Marske United 3-0 in the final. They also reached the final in 2017, but lost 3-1 to Whitby Town at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium. At the point of curtailment last season, Pickering were sitting 16th out of
26
19 sides in the Pitching In Northern Premier League Division One North West, with two wins and six defeats in nine outings. After some big wins in preseason, Pickering started this campaign with a 4-0 loss on the road at Shildon before also suffering a 3-1 home defeat to Pontefract Collieries, where Brandon Holdsworth grabbed a lastminute consolation. Steve Roberts' young outfit again saw defeat on Saturday in the Emirates FA Cup, as Marske United put seven past Adam Kelsey. Centre-back Ben Clappison saw red in the two league fixtures, so he'll be unavailable tonight.
THE INSIDE INFO Pickering Town's kitman and media officer, Tim Prest, previews tonight's fixture. I'm looking forward to tonight's game in the Pitching In Northern Premier League East Division. I've been involved with Pickering for 15 or so years, as my son used to play for the junior section and it's my local club. Around three years ago, we needed someone who attended the away games for our Twitter feed so I took that role, and I'm also a committee member and kitman. We've been assembling a new squad, but we didn't get too much of a chance last season to showcase ourselves. Recruitment is hard at Pickering, and not having a large fanbase is hard financially, although we're still ran really well. Pre-season looked good but
the start to the season needs to be addressed, which I'm sure our manager will. We're currently tweaking the system quite regularly, with Wayne Brooksby playing here, there and everywhere. He's the star man for us. Personally, I can't wait for the game. It's nice to travel to new grounds and clubs, so it'll be a good day out. From a playing point of view, we want the games to come thick and fast so we can put the defeats behind us. There's still a long way to go in the season, and players will move around clubs again due to things like game time, so our start isn't the end of the world.

KEY MEN
THE GAFFER Steve Roberts
Formerly of Scarborough Athletic, Roberts has been in The Pikes' hot seat since January 2020. The 45-year-old is a former favourite at Mill Lane, having donned the shirt for Pickering at the start of the century. Previously a midfielder, Roberts spent a number of years at The Seadogs as first-team coach, and would enjoy a stint as interim manager in March 2019. Roberts' side lost 1-0 to Middlesbrough U23s in the North Riding Senior Cup final near the end of his reign, before exiting Flamingo Land Stadium for good at the turn of the decade.
SHOT-STOPPER
ROCK SOLID
Adam Kelsey
Jamie Thornton
The ex-Scunthorpe 'keeper arrived at Mill Lane this month with a high reputation. Hailing from Hull, Kelsey spent seven years with The Tigers before moving to The Iron at 15. He inked his first professional deal in 2017, and spent the 2018/19 campaign on loan at Sheffield and Stocksbridge Park Steels.
One and Two on
The 19-year-old has played every minute for The Pikes so far this season. Thornton is a product of Leeds United, enjoying a decade with The Whites and coming close in the Professional Development League 2 South in 2019, but losing 2-1 to Cardiff City in the semi-final. The ball-playing defender left Elland Road in June 2020 upon the expiration of his contract.

DANGER MAN
Wayne Brooksby
ONE TO WATCH
The Pikes' longest serving player, Taylor is looking to break the club's record appearance mark in the next few seasons. The holding midfielder progressed through the ranks at Pickering, making his senior bow in April 2011. Taylor was everpresent for the North Yorkshire outfit as they gained promotion to tier eight in 2018.
Pickering's club captain, Brooksby has earned experience in the upper reaches of the non-league game. The 31-year-old joined Guiseley in 2012 from North Ferriby United, helping The Lions gain promotion to the National League three years later. A season later, Brooksby returned to The Villagers and netted in a successful National League North play-off final. After spells at Harrogate Town, Bradford Park Avenue and Scarborough Athletic, the attacker joined Pickering in July 2020.
The pacey winger signed for the club on Friday and played the full 90 away to Marske United. A left-sided player, Joynes enjoyed trials with Newcastle, Leeds and Middlesbrough as a youngster. After a stint with Spennymoor Town, Joynes spent time with Darlington Railway and Billingham Synthonia. He helped Billingham Town win the Northern League Division Two in 2018/19, before rejoining the club from Crook Town in February 2020.
MIDFIELD MAESTRO
The centre-midfielder, who has played in both league games for Steve Roberts' side thus far, departed Mill Lane for two seasons in favour of Bridlington Town, but returned in July 2021.
Dom Joynes
Joynes briefly signed for Sunderland West End before moving to Yorkshire.

FROM THE ARCHIVES We look back at a memorable afternoon against Durham City on South Tyneside. Scott Oliver's side continued their promotion push as The Hornets went 11 unbeaten on April 14, 2018. Hebburn Town, fighting at the top of Northern League Division Two, pressed early and hit the woodwork on two occasions in the same attack. The scoring was eventually opened on 39 minutes, as Craig Malley's looping header from a corner sailed into the roof of the net. Durham City tried to snatch an equaliser before the break, but Steven Hubery's reflexes and a block off the line denied them. The visitors did peg level six minutes into the second half, as Jack Wilkie beat the offside trap and poked home from close-range. Rhys Williams smashed a golden opportunity wide, before the hosts eventually regained the lead through
Daniel Robinson after the hour. Seconds later, Meechack Kanda diverted a corner past Nathan Armin to make it 3-1. After some good work down the left, substitute Paul Chow fired home on 78 minutes. In injury time, the ex-Whitley Bay man netted a spectacular free-kick to make it five. FOOTBALLING FIRSTS We ask our shot-stopper, Mark Foden, to take a trip down memory lane in his football career. First memory? Playing on pitches and on the playground at five and six. I didn't join a proper team until I was eight, and I was put in goal because I wasn't the quickest. First inspiration? I loved watching Jääskeläinen for Bolton on Match of the Day, but my dad was also a big inspiration. First pair of gloves? A pair of Sondico gloves from Tesco which were enormous I wore them for ages.
First senior game? I played a few times on loan in Scotland, but I played for Gateshead away to Salford in the FA Trophy and done alright. First cup? In my second year at Ross County, we won the SPFL Development League.
First pair of boots? In Germany, we bought a pair of Athletic Walks from Walmart. Phenomenal.
First penalty save? Before I came to Hebburn, I don't think there were any. Probably the Corinthian game.
First kit? A large St Mirren shirt when I was six.
First goal? When I was 15, we already won the league. We were 3-0 up and they put me on a penalty, which I missed unfortunately. 37
First manager? John Hughes when I was a youngster at Hartlepool.

MUMBA MAKES DEBUT Another Hebburn Town Juniors product wrote history recently, this time Bali Mumba. The attacker came off the bench for Norwich City at half-time on Saturday away to Manchester City. Daniel Farke's team were 2-0 down at the interval, and would concede another three in the second 45. Mumba, who came through the ranks on South Tyneside before earning a deal with Sunderland, made his Premier League debut in the clash. The 19-year-old signed for The Canaries last year, and made two Championship appearances as the Norfolkbased outfit secured the title. Mumba isn't the first in recent times to do The Hornets proud in the top flight, as Shola Shoretire played twice for Manchester United last campaign. On top of that, Shoretire
got a taste of Europa League action, despite having only turned 17. Furthermore, Sam Greenwood and Dan Neil found the back of the net for Leeds United and Sunderland in pre-season. Neil has already made five appearances for The Black Cats this season as Lee Johnson's side sit fifth in League One, and he was an unused sub in their EFL Trophy victory at Wembley in March. Will Harris has bagged two goals in his two outings for the U23s on Wearside against Fulham and Burnley in the Premier League 2.

FA YOUTH CUP We preview next Tuesday's FA Youth Cup game against Spennymoor Town. Newly-appointed U18s boss, Stephen Hymers, looks forward to what will be a special occasion next week. The youthful Hornets made history in the competition last season, as victories against the likes of Workington and Hartlepool United gifted them a home clash to AFC Fylde. The game would end in defeat, but the achievement in getting to third round qualifying was not to be overlooked. A former captain of the senior side, Hymers took the hot seat in the summer. "I was coaching the U16s last year," he stated. "We've merged with the year above, so we're a bit younger but have a lot more energy. "Pre-season has gone brilliantly, we've had two 8-0s and a 7-0 so far. "We've got a lot of quality in
the squad - Dylan [Archer] made his senior debut last week and another lad has just signed a scholarship with Sunderland. "They are prime examples, and some others have got experience with Seaham Red Star." Tuesday, August 31 will see The Moors visit Hebburn at 7:30pm in the preliminary round. "It's a great opportunity for the lads to showcase what we've got, as it's a close game on paper," Hymers added. "It's two of the best youth setups in the North East going head to head. "We're relishing the day - we'll be playing on the senior pitch and have everything from turnstiles, media coverage and more."

FAN ZONE Hebburn Town fan, Graham Duggan, describes his love for The Hornets. One afternoon in 2018, I was in the Sportsy and noticed Hebburn were at home, so I enjoyed a 3-1 win. From then on, I was hooked. Like most, I was beginning to feel the professional game was moving away from the fans and was becoming more fixated with all things money. Here at Hebburn it was, and still is, all about the fans and indeed the whole community. Their work in helping local charities and bringing up young players is excellent. I am proud to say that my son, Matty, and his partner, Amy (and on occasion my wife, Sharon) have also now become Hornet fanatics and season ticket holders. My love for Hebburn Town was confirmed on May 3, 2021, as we lifted the FA Vase.

Watching on the big screen at the Sportsy, tears streamed down my face as our club won at Wembley - something that'll live long in the memory, My favourite player at the moment is Michael Richardson, there's always a buzz when he steps up for a free-kick. We knew the new season was going to be tough, we certainly weren't going to roll teams over 4-0, but against Frickley Athletic there were some encouraging passages of play. It was good to see Conor Bell open his account despite another defeat. I think tonight is going to be ours, especially after Saturday I'm predicting a 2-1 win with a few goals from Connor.
