Hello to everyone again! It has been a long time coming since I last spoke to you. Welcome to the Green Energy Stadium for those of you lucky enough to get in for what should be a cracking FA Vase tie against North Shields.

This should be the tie of the round throughout the country in my opinion, and both teams have a fantastic chance to have a great run in the competition, should they come through the tie.

Let's hope this is the last lockdown we come out of and we can all start getting some normality back. Before I move on though, on behalf of myself and everyone at Hebburn Town FC, I would like to offer my condolences to everyone who has lost loved ones during this pandemic.

North Shields are the only side to beat us this season in the league and deservedly so, they work so hard for each other and have quality players throughout their squad. So we know the task ahead of ourselves today. It's fair to say we never done ourselves justice in that defeat to today's opponents so myself, Mick and all the lads are determined to put on a better performance today.

It has been a very tough time for many people, but hopefully we’re getting towards the end of it and are on our way back to normality.

Back to football and what a game we have in store today in what has been a fantastic competition for us since my time at the club.

On behalf of the club, I would like to offer a warm welcome to staff and players today from North Shields FC to the Green Energy Stadium for today's FA Vase second round tie.

When this game was supposed to go ahead last week, it looked like it was going to have to be an occasion without fans, as the regulations at the time suggested that spectators would not be allowed into tier 3 areas.

However, thanks in part to a campaign by the club, and the work of our local MP Kate Osborne in seeking further clarification on the guidance, the FA announced that fans would be allowed back into grounds at step 5, even in tier 3 areas.

This game should have always been played in front of fans, two of the Northern League’s top sides in a knockout tie of a national competition. It is a massive boost to be able to play in front of some of our fans. Unfortunately, the restrictions mean that only 150 are allowed in, but the club have worked hard to be able to deliver a live stream for those unable to attend.

It's funny talking about this season’s competition whilst we await our big day against Consett at Wembley to finish last season’s competition.

I am so proud of everyone connected to the club and all their hard work in supporting the lads and management on last season’s journey to the final. That cup run will never leave me.

Back to today's game and the beginning of this season’s journey in the competition, the lads have kept themselves in great nick during the lockdown and we have trained twice this week and I have to say they are looking sharp and raring to go.

This will be a very tight game and one that could go all the way to penalties, so a lot will depend on concentration and discipline. We know the strengths of our opponents and respect them for the good side that they are, however we have got goals in our side along with a desire and determination to keep clean sheets as well. We are at home and will look to play on the front foot as we usually do. Our form in this competition is very good, we have shown fantastic mentality to get so far in last season’s Vase and we will need that again today.

I'm confident this will be a very good game and we look forward to it immensely, I hope you do too!

Hello and welcome back!

It feels like like deja vu! Casting our mind back to August, returning from lockdown and starting the games with a highly anticipated FA Vase cup tie.

Maybe an experience which we can use to our advantage!

Our opposition specifically caught us on a bad day last time out, it would be more accurate to say it was a bad 45 minutes but that was enough to do the damage.

Following that night we bounced back quickly but it still provides motivation and focus ahead of today’s game.

The last lockdown no doubt felt like abit of a sucker punch for everyone, taking a huge backwards step following the slow and frustrating return from the initial lockdown. I was specifically gutted thinking about Hebburn town FC

They are a young, fit and technical side with a distinct way of playing. A style of play which can hurt you as we have experienced earlier in the season if you don’t adapt, but also a shape which has clear areas of weakness and the key is to exploit these early on, so that we can get on the front foot and bring quality to the table.

considering the momentum the team had created with the first set of results, the return of our fans somewhat limited and seeing the club come back to life at the centre of the community...where it belongs may I say!

We have a lot of competition for places across the pitch which will very much will put us in good stead and I’m looking forward to get back on the pitch, put a display on for the fans and look forward to striking some revenge.

However, we’ve all done our bit once again and I am very proud on how the group have stayed committed to the cause, kept fit during this period and have been looking very sharp and raring to go during our training sessions building up to match days.

Today our mindset will be that it’s all about us, if we bring our A game we are very confident as ever that we will get the result we are wanting. This group's quality and potential is never questioned, it’s about performing and rising to the occasion.

I was lucky to continue with work in a reasonable normal capacity working within an education setting which most definitely helped me remain focused and positive throughout lockdown. The group received plenty of support from the coaching team and I threw myself into the fitness sessions, using the motivation to be ready to continue our league form and prepare for this year's Vase competition as much as possible. The weather wasn’t bad considering the dark nights were creeping in so I enjoyed running, cycling and, walking along the Newcastle coast and quayside.

Lastly, it’s great that the FA have updated their guidance and allowed spectators. We hope to put on a good show and achieve success in progressing to the next round.

Today we host oue fellow league contenders North Shields in the FA vase and it certainly makes for an interesting affair. Returning to the competition without last years finishing is for sure a weird feeling and I haven’t been able to work out wether it creates more pressure or freedom, I suppose I won’t find out until the whistle blows and the games commence. @HebburnTown | 5

Robbie Spence Th tall, strong midfielder joined Hebburn from Team Northumbria in the summer of 2018 and has been a huge part of Hebburn's journey since then with battling displays and even the occasional goal. In this interview he talks about the impact of the lockdown and getting going again in the Vase.

As Hebburn look to get back underway after their momentum was halted by the lockdown with a huge FA Vase game against North Shields, Robbie Spence is remaining positive about his side's prepaerations.

"The lockdown did come at a bad time for us," Robbie admits.

"We were playing well and were on a run of picking up win after win.

"We're absolutely raring to get going again. It's a big game isn't it?

"We’ve been looking forward to it since it got drawn.

That is why we enjoy playing in these competitions, to play in these kinds of games."

We were all doing stuff every day and it really showed when we got back in training." (Robbie says his 5K personal best is 18:35 for anyone wondering)

The midfielder remains realistic about the task at hands, a side that have pushed Hebburn all the way in the battle at the top so far this season and have occupied second for most of the campain. Robbie adds: "they’re the only team to have turned us over this season and that’s another big incentive for us.

As Hebburn get back underway in the Vase, it acts as a stark reminder that the club are still yet to have the big day out they earned in last season's competition.

"We don’t feel like we gave a very good account of ourselves at their place earlier in the season so we’ve got a bit of a score to settle today."

Robbie feels somewhat boosted ahead of today's encounter after seeing the good condition his teammates are in, as they have all stuck to their lockdown training plans. He said: "Angelos gave us a brilliant training programme.

"There were three running sessions a week, and three or four strength-based sessions a week.

"So we had to do two pitch-based running sessions and then do either a 5k or a 10k each week. It was good to have a structure and plan to go off, but to be honest I think all of the lads have done a little bit more than the plan.

Spence played a big part in that campaign, including a last minute extra-time winner away at Longridge. On starting a new campaign in the competition he says: "It’s strange to be playing in the Vase again considering we haven’t finished last season’s competition off and we’re starting again this year.

"It certainly hasn’t devalued the competition to us at all, if anything it has spurred us on that little bit more.

We still haven’t be there, I know some of the lads have with previous clubs but for most of us we’re still waiting for that experience and dying to get to Wembley.

“If anything it has spurred us on even more. It would be quite something to be, I’d imagine, the first team to play at Wembley in the Vase final twice in one year."

As the Hornets prepare for the huge Vase encounter, there is a boost for non-league clubs across the country as it is confirmed that fans will be allowed back into grounds in limited numbers even in tier 3 areas.

And Spence is relishing the chance of playing in front of the Hornets' faithful again: "It is massive to be able to play in front of fans.

"You’ve even seen it in the Premier League, last week managers talking about the massive difference having fans back in made.

"It gives you a huge lift to have our fans in the ground, so it will be important to us today."

It seems clear that to Robbie, to adopt a positive outlook on situations is important, and as we turn our focus back to North Shields, he again chooses to not take a negative view of the impact that losing to them last time out could have.

He says: "I don’t think the previous defeat to North Shields is weighing on our minds at all. We don’t look at things that negatively.

"We’ve spun it into a positive as we’re dying to make a mends.

"We don’t feel like we gave a good enough account of ourselves away at North Shields, especially for the first hour. The last 30 minutes we were better and scored two goals and could have nicked a draw at the end.

Club campaign successfully for the return of fans She recognised the importance of non-league football within her constituency. South Shields, Hebburn Town and Jarrow FC are all a huge part of their local community.

She made sure that Stephen's concerns were heard and wrote a letter to Oliver Dowden, cabinet minister for the Department of Culture, Media & Sport.

Everyone connected with Hebburn Town is delighted by the news that we will be able to have fans in the ground for our huge FA Vase game, and we feel that we are not overstating the part out club played in making that happen.

It was largely the work of Director of Football Stephen Rutherford on behalf of the club.

While a lot of us had accepted the FA's reasoning that step 5 clubs in tier 3 areas would have to play behind closed doors, Ruddy did not just accept that.

A reply came from the DCMS confirming that spectators were allowed into non-elite football matches in limited numbers.

But as we shared that letter it caused more confusion.

The league had already sought guidance from the FA on the issue weeks ago, and were told that clubs in tier 3 areas at step 5 would have to play behind closed doors, which led to the further suspension of the league.

The confusion around this letter seemed to re-open the discussion, and confirmation came that following further discussions beHe looked at the wording of the guidance that tween the FA, DCMS & the leagues, 150 fans allowed spectators in at 'non-elite' clubs, this would be allowed into grounds in tier 3 areas at step 5. guidance would mean that fans could watch the Veterans, U18s or even the step 7 U23s at the Green Energy Sports Ground, but not the This campaign will have been a huge boost to many non-league clubs across the country, first team. and we are proud to feel we played a part.

There seemed to be an inconsistency in what the government and DCMS defined as a nonelite club (step 3 and below) compared to who the FA guidance suggested could play with fans in the ground (step 7 and below).

But it was important that Rutherford's protests did not fall on deaf ears.

This is where our local MP Kate Osborne came in.

We also have to say a huge thank you to Kate Osborne for taking on the responsibility of fighting for grassroots football in her constituency & across the country.

Rest In Peace Martin Lorimer The North East community was rocked by the news of the passing of Martin Lorimer earlier this week.

Martin was a Geordie and a huge Newcastle United fan, and following a concerning post on social media the community rallied to try and find out information to see if they could help him.

Sadly, those efforts were not enough. We are sure people of all football allegiances will join us in sending our support to Martin's loved ones, and in wishing that he has found a better place.

There are no colours in the fight against mental health. Mental health awareness is a hugely important issue and one that we should all be committed to.

If you are struggling, never be afraid to speak up.

Never feel weak because you are struggling, do not feel that voicing your concerns is a show of weakness. To be able to admit that you are struggling and talk about those struggles is a sign of strength.

North Shields Athletic was originally formed in 1896, and played initially in the South Shields & District league. They progressed through the Northern Combination, Northern Alliance and North Eastern League and became a major force in North East Football, outside the Football League, moving to play at Hawkey’s Lane around 1900.

They originally joined the Northern Alliance, before switching to the North Eastern League in 1908.

The club emerged as Preston Colliery F.C. after the Great War, reverting to North Shields A.F.C. in 1928. They enjoyed tremendous local support with a record 12,800 watching the local derby with South Shields in October 1936. Shields won the North Eastern League title in 1950, before the league folded in 1958. Spells in the Midland League and Northern Counties league followed before the club joined the Northern league in the 1964-65 season, finishing third at their first attempt.

The Robins moment of crowning glory came in 1969, when they won the FA Amateur Cup by beating Sutton United in front of 47,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium. Shields were a goal down after only four minutes but won with second half strikes from Richie Hall and Brian Joicey – both laid on by Orrick, a shipyard worker from Byker. The club, which also won the Northern League title and Challenge Cup that same year, were declared joint holders of the European Amateur Cup the following season when two games against Italian Side Almas resulted in a level aggregate score.

In 1982, the Robins won 1-0 at Halifax Town in the FA Cup First Round, Bede McCaffrey scoring the all-important goal that year. Walsall were the visitors to Appleby Park in the second round, for only the second time in the club’s history and left with a 3-0 victory.

Having moved into the national pyramid by joining the NCEL in 1989, North Shields earned promotion to the Northern Premier League by winning the title in 1992. However, financial problems arose, which meant Appleby Park had to be sold to and lead to the club folding. However, they almost instantly reformed as a new club, thanks to the efforts of local people and many of the current committee.

The club, headed by new chairman Richard Slade, sought and gained immediate admission to the Second Division of the Wearside League. They were promoted to the top flight as runners-up in their first season, briefly reverting back to North Shields Athletic for four seasons. They enjoyed success in local cup competitions, too, the Shipowners Cup and NFA Senior Bowl added to that title in the 1998/99 treble-winning season.

In 1999, the club moved to Ralph Gardner Park, now known as the Daren Persson Stadium, and began to develop the ground to meet the Northern League standards. Once again known as North Shields FC, the club began to kick on, league runners-up in 2000/01 and winners by eight points the following season. They also continued to collect silverware elsewhere, winning the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup in 2001 and again in 2003.

After a fifteen-year absence, the Robins gained promotion back into the Northern League in 2004 following their third Wearside League title and a further Shipowners Cup triumph.

After ten years in Division Two, the club belatedly returned to the top tier having narrowly missed out in 2010/11. The Robins shattered records en route to the 2013/14 championship including the Daren Persson Stadium attendance which was 1,312 for the visit of West Allotment Celtic and the presentation of the 2nd division trophy.

But better was to come as the Robins swept past the likes of Phoenix Sports, Erith & Belvedere and Highworth Town to reach the 2015 FA Vase final at Wembley. In front of almost 10,000 fans, Shields went behind to Glossop North End, but a late equaliser by Gareth Bainbridge and Adam Forster’s extra-time finish clinched the coveted trophy for Graham Fenton’s men. The club also finished fourth in division one to cap a memorable season.

The following season 2015-6 Shields finished fifth in the league whilst lifting the Northumberland Senior Cup beating Blyth Spartans 4-3 in a thrilling Final at St James Park. Gary Ormston opened the scoring followed by a Gareth Bainbridge brace with Ryan Carr notching a dramatic last minute winner. Manager Graham Fenton left the club in September 2016 to join South Shields, with Jon McDonald replacing him as manager. McDonald kept North Shields at the top until early April, losing out to South Shields in the title race. North Shields also lost the Senior Cup to Blyth and the League Cup to South Shields after which Jon McDonald left the club.

Shields moved to appoint Assistant Manager, Brian Smith as the new Manager, with Gary Ormston stepping up as Assistant and Andy Gowans joining the coaching set up alongside Wilf Keilty. Brian Smith left the club in February 2018 to be replaced by ex Whitley Bay boss Marc Nash. Nash brought with him Anthony Woodhouse who was welcomed back to his old stamping ground as assistant. The duo marked their debut in charge with a sensational 6-5 victory over Jarrow Roofing after the Robins were trailing 5-2 late in the game.

With Steve Swinyard coming in as coach the new management team guided the club to a final 8th position as the season closed. The latest campaign of 2019-2020 before halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the side saw an impressive 4th placed finish with games in hand on the teams above.

The team scored 56 goals only conceding 37.

New recruit joins The Robins from spending 2 years in Perth Australia playing for Western Knights Soccer Club. The former Sunderland AFC youngster shone through the ranks before joining Blyth Spartans. Cartwright has also played for England C.

Robbie Christie Defender

Robbie is a player we would have signed at the start of last season if it wasn’t for him taking a scholarship at Newcastle University. Once we knew he was available we were interested as young, left footed players of that quality are few and far between. He can play in defence and also higher up and with his pace he can cause teams problems.

Jack Donnison Defender

A solid full back whose energy and love of a tackle has made him a firm favourite at Shields. He has become a consistent performer in defence but is also good at going forward too.

Chris McDonald Defender

McDonald is a strong and versatile defender/ midfielder with experience from captaining Whitley bay to playing for Berwick Rangers in Scottish League Second Division more recently playing for Morpeth Town. Chris has scored some spectacular goals in his playing career.

Joined from Consett, after spending time on loan at Belle View in 2016-17 from Gateshead, where, despite arriving as a midfielder, he showed his versatility by turning out at right-back. Suffered an injury which needed an operation that kept him out for the rest of the season. Signed for Consett and was apart of the DCC-winning team. A real fans favorite with strong performances on the pitch.

Cam Cunningham Midfielder

Extremely talented young player with lots of skill and an attacking mindset. Made the transition from junior into senior football with ease and is tipped to go very far if he continues to progress at a rapid rate.

Adam Forster Midfielder

Adam has rejoined the club after a spell at Blyth AFC, The former Blyth Spartans midfielder was a vital member of the North Shields side that won the FA Vase and Senior Cup. Adam scored the extra time winner against Glossop North End in the FA Vase Final in 2015. Promoted to First Team captain for the 2019-2020 season.

David Hall

David joined North Shields from Whitley Bay in 2018. He has worked with Marc during his time at Whitley and was keen to bring him to North Shields.

Gary Ormston Midfielder

The very exciting midfielder returns to the club for his second spell. The midfielder is a very creative player who controls the game. The former Newcastle United product certainly knows where the net is and contributes to lots of assists too!

A Shields legend of the modern era, Gareth has delivered crucial goals at venues including Wembley and St James Park. Since joining from Ashington, Gaz has scored over 160 goals for North Shields.

Jamie Clark Forward

Jamie is another product of Tyne Met College and was a member of the Youth Cup squad last two seasons. A scorer of fantastic goals with his left foot, he has the potential to progress if he stays fit and focused.

Kyle Patton Forward

Kyle is an attacking forward who previously played for Durham City, Whitley Bay, Shildon and Bishop Auckland. Kyle is an exciting attacking player who will also bring goals to the side. He has experience in the league even at such a young age and is a perfect fit for the club going forward. A real fans favourite with lots of goals to his name. Kyle was the 2019/2020 top goalscorer.

Daniel Wilson Forward

The Young centre forward returns for his second spell at the club after time at Blyth AFC and Seaham Red Star. The forward has lots of pace and strength. He gives all central defenders a tough time with his non stop energy and great hold up play.

Callum Smith Forward

The 21-year-old is an exciting left winger who came through the Newcastle United setup, impressing as a member of their under 23 squad.

Has played for Hull City and Dunston UTS.

Liam Brooks Forward

A goal scoring midfielder who is comfortable across the centre of the park. His experience will bring on the younger players and his 100% attitude will always be a huge plus.

Liam joins the Robins from Alnwick Town, having previously played for Whitley Bay and Dunston UTS. The talented forward scored 18 goals across two seasons with Dunston, before departing for the Magpies at the start of the season. Another quality addition to a talented group of forwards.

David Robinson Midfielder

Coleby Shepherd Forward

Another quality addition to the midfield area. The former Seaham and Blyth AFC captain is a boxto-box midfielder that will leave everything out on the pitch for the team and is a player that will certainly chip in with goals and assists throughout the season.

The young wide forward joins the Robins from Northern Premier League Premier Division side Whitby Town on loan to bolster Marc Nash’s attacking options and also act as cover for the injured Kyle Patton who suffered a nasty injury against Marske United in the FA Cup.

Club Hebburn was very different back in 1912. The collieries that had changed it from a small agricultural hamlet to a cosmopolitan but pretty grimy industrial town were nearing peak employment of 1,864 men, the shipyards launched by Andrew Leslie were in full vigour and the town, 11 years earlier, had welcome a diminutive Frenchman called Alphonse Reyrolle.

Reyrolle opened an engineering works, initially employing just 50 men, in the former dye factory next to St Aloysius’s church. At its peak Reyrolles would employ 12,000 men from a wide range of backgrounds, religions and cultures and export to 70 countries and be known worldwide.

The company also started a football team, encouraged by industrialist and mine owner Sir Ralph Carr-Ellison, another famous name in Hebburn history who provided the sports ground on which the Northern League side still plays. Football has played a major part in the life of the town, a cornerstone of its history.

Probably it also helped the population forget the harshness of day-to-day life, families of ten and more in insanitary, two-up two-down houses. When the last pit closed in 1931, it had claimed the lives of almost 200 men and boys.

There’d been plenty of teams before 1912, of course, notably Hebburn Argyle – kicked off in 1882 by Father Toner, the priest at St Aloysius’s. The town had so many Scots, they became known as the Tyneside Highlanders. Pre-World War 1 derbies with Jarrow would attract crowds of 8,000.The Geordie town also had Shinty and Curling Clubs and even an annual Highland Games, organised by the Hebburn Celtic Society.

Alphonse Reyrolle had actively encouraged his workers to take part in sport, including “barefoot” football, and formed the Employees’ Benevolent Association. The team formed in 1912, elected to the second division of the Jarrow and District Junior League, was suitably booted, however.

They progressed, flourished in the 1930s, had a wartime season in the North Eastern League, won the Durham Challenge Cup in 1943, and returned to the Northern Combination where they stayed until 1958. In 1959-60, Reyrolles had another season in the terminally ailing North Eastern League but finished bottom with just eight points.

The club then had 28 seasons in the Wearside League, and won the league in 1966 and the Monkwearmouth Cup in 1968.

In 1988, following the demise of the iconic engineering company A. Reyrolle, the name was changed to Hebburn and application made to join the Northern League – though it was before the days of automatic promotion and relegation and there wasn’t a vacancy. The ground was improved and other clubs canvassed. The break, however, came when North Shields created a vacancy by deciding by deciding to play elsewhere. The team played its first Northern League game on August 19 1989, winning 2-1 at Shotton Comrades, won promotion and the Durham Challenge Cup in 1992 but were relegated – contentiously – for failing to meet ground criteria. They won the Craven Cup in 1999-2000.

History In season 2011/12, Hebburn reached the FA Cup final qualifying round – a dream tie at neighbours Gateshead, from whom they were separated by 125 league places – and secured promotion in third place after a fascinating and exciting final ten games which took the team up to the first division In 2012/13 Hebburn Town met their target of staying in the first division after a nerve racking end to the season.

During the close season however manager Paul Bennett decided to leave the club for Jarrow Roofing along with his assistant Dean Nicholson. Unfortunately the team followed suit and in June the club had to start from scratch; two ex-Hebburn players Scott Oliver and Davy Bell took up the challenge and the new management team successfully assembled a squad of mainly young players with a base of experienced players to give the team a good mix.

Unfortunately, the very young and somewhat inexperienced side could not avoid relegation although they played with spirit, commitment and enthusiasm throughout the season. The team received many plaudits for their playing style and attitude and also achieved some notable results; although relegated the team got stronger as the season progressed.

The squad in 2017/2018 season had a magnificent run from Jan 2018 – May 2018 that saw the Hornets record just 2 losses in all competitions, this fine form secured promotion to the Ebac Northern League Division One by finishing in second place.

In their first season back in Division 1, Hebburn finished as runners up. Michael Richardson was the side’s top scorer with 25 goals, and then manager Scott Oliver took the side to the fifth round of the FA Vase.

The Vase run was remarkable as the home attendance record was broken twice. 1,302 people attended the game against City of Liverpool in the first round, and 1,310 people were at the game against West Auckland in the fifth round.

In the summer of 2019, manager Scott Oliver stepped down from his role and reserve team manager Kevin Bolam stepped up to the role. The new management team of Kevin Bolam and assistant Mick Mulhern had a promising first season in charge, with the team in the promotion hunt before the season was voided as well as reaching the final of the FA Vase which is still yet to be played.

Hebburn Town has now enjoyed 30 seasons and over 1,000 games in the Northern League. Hopefully, they will continue to build on their great legacy for another 1,000 games.

The Story of the 2019-20 Vase (so far) Saturday 2nd November 2019 Hebburn Town 3-0 Sunderland RCA

Hebburn Town got their Vase campaign underway at the Green Energy Stadium in a Northern League derby against Sunderland RCA, both clubs entering at the second round stage due to their performance in last season's competition.

It took a while for the Hornets to find a breakthrough, as they were frustrated for much of the first half, but once the breakthrough came Hebburn ran away with it.

They finally found a breakthrough 15 minutes from time when Richardson’s cross from the right found Spence at the far post to head home.

Richardson was on target for the second goal when substitute Olly Martin found him inside the box with an excellent through ball and the midfielder finished well into the bottom right.

Hebburn put the game beyond any doubt at the end of normal time when Armstrong turned home Ben Dibb-Fuller’s low cross from close range.

Saturday 30th November 2019 Lower Breck 1-5 Hebburn Town

The third round proper gave us the first of two trips to Merseyside, and the first of three trips to the North West of England.

It was a journey into the unknown. We faced a Lower Breck side who were going extremely well in the North West Counties Division One North.

Lower Breck went ahead within three minutes through Louis Austin who pickpocketed Louis Storey in his defensive third for a clear sight of goal and then finished into the bottom left corner.

Hebburn finally found the breakthrough around the half hour when Ben Dibb-Fuller’s cross was only half-cleared to Martin on the right side of the box and he fired low inside the near post.

The Hornets took the lead five minutes into the second half through a Carl Taylor header and then started to take control, Michael Richardson doubling the lead.

Olly Martin grabbed two more goals to complete his hat-trick and make it a rout for Hebburn in Liverpool.

Saturday 11th January 2020 Vauxhall Motors 0-1 Hebburn Town The second of the trips to Merseyside came in the Fourth Round, this time south of the Mersey to face Vauxhall Motors.

Like our previous opponents, they had a record of knocking out Northern League opposition. The difference was, their record of doing so was much longer.

The game did not live up to the occasion, an early Olly Martin screamer deciding the game as the two sides played out a tense battle. But nobody in Hebburn cared about the entertainment value of the game, the Hornets were into the Fifth Round.

Saturday 8th February 2020 Longridge Town 0-1 (AET) Hebburn Town By this point there was a realisation of just how deep into this competition we were. A realisation of 'we could actually win the thing!'

But standing in the Hornets' way was another away trip to the North West, and a goalkeeper in the Longridge goal that did everything to keep his side in the competition.

After seeing chance after chance go begging through a mixture of excellent goalkeeping and lack of killer instinct, it seemed we were heading for penalties.

But in a cruel twist of fate at the end of extra-time, it was a mistake from the excellent Dovey that gave Hebburn the victory.

Robbie Spence capitalised when he spilled a Michael McKeown free-kick and he turned home from close range. And with that, we’re into the quarter-final.

Saturday 29th February 2020 Hebburn Town 2-0 Plymouth Parkway After tense encounters, coming from behind, last minute winners, the quarter-final was surprisingly comfortable.

Hebburn were back at home for the first time since the second round on a sunny day at the end of February, and the feel good factor set in with a record attendance.

And those fans were treated to a very good performance against the Devon side who had a tough journey for the game, Cedwyn Scott being the man of the moment.

Olly Martin played Scott through who then rounded the keeper before finishing into the bottom left corner to score his first goal for the Hornets.

Scott doubled the Hornets’ lead just before half-time when he turned Michael McKeown’s whipped cross into the left corner to deal a sucker punch to the visitors.

Saturday 29th February 2020 Hebburn Town 2-0 Plymouth Parkway The quarter-final may have been strangely comfortable, but this was not going to be a sign of things to come for the remainder of the competition.

It was a long journey to even get the semi-final on as the lockdown and premature end of the season put the competition at threat.

But the FA committed to have the competition completed, but this would mean a one leg semi-final and Hebburn were drawn to make the long road trip down to Kent.

The game was heart-stopping. At times it felt like one of those days where nothing was going to go your way. The release of emotion from everyone at the end of it clearly highlighted that.

A dodgy penalty decision allowed Oscar Housego to give Corinthian the lead and things were made worse when Olly Martin was sent off shortly after coming on.

But Hebburn found a dramatic equaliser in the 88th minute when Armstrong levelled, also from the penalty spot.

Armstrong then gave Hebburn a lead during extra-time with a good header, but another setback came with another questionable penalty decision that allowed Billings to level for Corinthian and send the game to a penalty shootout.

The Hornets won the shootout. 4-3. Hebburn are going to Wembley (eventually)!

North Shields 1-5 Hebburn Town Saturday 14th September 2019 Ebac Northern League Last season's only match against North Shields was probably one of the games of the abandoned campaign.

A Graeme Armstrong hat-trick helped Hebburn to an emphatic victory over the side from the other side of the Tyne.

Hebburn took the lead when Robson linked up well with Groves as they exchanged one-twos before the winger went across goal and buried the ball in the bottom left from long range.

Hebburn doubled their lead when Robson's corner was poorly defended and Sullivan netted the rebound from close range following a save from Darren Lough's effort.

Moments later, it was 3-0 to the visitors as Robson beat Buchanan on the right and squared it to Armstrong who put the ball away at the far post.

North Shields picked up a goal when Ryan Carr headed home on the end of Nick Cassidy's cross.

Armstrong capitalised on a defensive mistake through on goal and buried the ball in the bottom-left corner to make it 4-1 to Hebburn.

He completed his hat-trick with the last kick of the game thanks to a brilliant free-kick into the top right corner.

Dear Diary 31/10/20 Hebburn Town 4-0 Northallerton town

Hebburn extend their winning run to eight games with a 4-0 home victory over Northallerton.

Scott opened the scoring in the 12th minute, following a handball in the box by Northallerton, and despite the away teams’ protests, Scott slotted the ball to the keeper's right to give the league leaders the lead.

Hebburn then added a second, when Thomas Potter raced onto a pass and slotted the ball past the on-rushing Thomas Dawson into the Northallerton Town net.

Hebburn’s third and Scott’s second came courtesy of another spot kick, with Northallerton bringing down the Hebburn number 15 as he took a touch in the box, with Scott then stepping up to dispatch the penalty into the bottom right corner for his 21st goal of the season.

Scott seized upon a Northallerton defensive slip and broke through to slide the ball across the box to the feet of substitute Michael Richardson who tapped home the simplest of finishes for Hebburn’s fourth.

Editor’s Notes Hello and a very warm welcome back to the Green Energy Stadium for a huge FA Vase second round clash with North Shields.

It has been way too long since I have written one of these. It felt like we were getting into the swing of the season and then all of a sudden we were back into a national lockdown.

The lads were in excellent form, and I'm sure they'll all be fit and firing to get going again. From what I've heard, they have looked in great shape during training.

I have well and truly missed it. Sometimes I think it can be a bit stressful, games coming thick and fast and it feels like you only just finish doing the media content from the last game before you have to start doing the preparation for the next one. However, this time in lockdown has been a reminder of just how much I love doing this work, with this club.

Lockdown, something I and I'm sure many others had never experienced until this year, can be extremely tough. As someone who dedicates my life to playing, watching and reporting on sport, it has been an incredibly difficult time. It is difficult sitting around in the house, I miss my time on the tennis courts and by the side of football pitches. I'm sure many others have had much tougher times than me during this pandemic.

That is why I feel it is pertinent to shine a light on mental health awareness. Mental health awareness is always relevant, it should always be part of the public conscience, but now more than ever it is important to remind people the importance of talking.

It is not a sign of weakness to open up, it is an incredible show of strength. The same goes for asking. If you feel that somebody around you may be going through a tough time, don't hesitate to ask them if they're okay.

Being able to be busy again doing the things I love is going to do me a world of good, and today's game couldn't come soon enough.

A big boost ahead of today's game was the announcement that fans will be allowed back into the ground, something that I believe the excellent campaigning of Stephen Rutherford, who did not give up and accept that tier 3 measures should mean we are not be able to welcome our fans, played a huge part in.

We have to extend a huge thank you to Kate Osborne, our local MP, who helped raise Stephen's concerns to the relevant people and campaigned for the good of grassroots football clubs such as ourselves, Jarrow FC, and South Shields within her constituency and as a result has had a positive effect on grassroots football across the country.

150 fans is much better than behind closed doors, but we understand there will be so many more who would love to be there. This is why I am delighted we will be able to bring you a live stream after successful testing. As well as being able to bring you closer to the action, it will be a valuable professional experience for me to administrate a broadcast of a football match.

But back to the task of hand today, it feels so strange starting this season's campaign when we still have our day out at Wembley from last season to come.

We could not have been given a tougher draw, North Shields are one of the top sides in our league and the only team to beat us over 90 minutes this season.

They were deserved winners last time out, having been the better team for 60 of the 90 minutes.

However, the lads' record in the Vase speaks for itself, they have been unbelievable in this competition. I also feel even though that game was an off day from our usual standards, the performances have got better and better since then and we are a much more ruthless side now. It should be an absolute cracker of a cup tie.
