Good afternoon and a warm welcome to Hebburn for today's game against Sunderland RCA. I'd also like to extend that welcome to everyone connected with Sunderland RCA that has made the journey up to Hebburn today.

RCA are a solid side. They are always a difficult team to play against and are usually well organised and hard to break down.

We had three intriguing games against them last season in the space of a couple of months. They have strengthened over the summer with some great Northern League performers like James Fairley, who will be very familiar to some Hebburn fans.

We’ve been tested with injuries and Covid over the last two games and have come through both of those tests very well. We are tested again tonight as one or two are poorly but that’s what squad football is all about, and Kev and I know we have a great group of lads here.

Last Saturday was an energy sapping game on a very heavy Whitley Bay pitch and that in itself turned it into a physically draining game for the lads. Kevin and I got to see just where we are regarding the strength and fitness of the group. The result was never in doubt and the lads managed the second half in particular very well.

It has been an encouraging start for the club in general as both the 23s and 18s are making their mark in their respective leagues and competitions.

That in itself bodes well for the club moving forward.

Finally I’d like to wish both Luke Salmon and Suds the best of luck as they’ve both moved on to pastures new. They go with our very best wishes.

Louis Storey Captain’s Column " Normally each season starts with back-to-back midweek and weekend fixtures but then

starts to ease off come this time of the year. However, this hasn’t been the case and this has continued and will continue as a regular occurrence.

Hello again and welcome to the Green Energy Stadium for our home fixture against Sunderland RCA. An opponent which we have faced and experienced a mixed bag of results against in seasons gone by.

Watching from afar, our opponents have evolved over the last two seasons. They have always been very competitive, physical and psychologically strong, but recently they’ve displayed more of a focus on playing less direct. That should provide an intense fixture and a fast-paced game with two teams looking to play and rise to the challenge the other poses.

Since the last time we spoke we’ve had a very congested fixture list. Normally each season starts with back-to-back midweek and weekend fixtures but then starts to ease off come this time of the year. However, this hasn’t been the case and this has continued and will continue as a regular occurrence.

This has meant an adaptation to our game, preparation, and training programme, incorporating a lot more recovery and match analysis for our own team development as well as preparation for each opponent we face.

Within the last month and the last time I shared my thoughts through the captain’s column, we’ve played 5 games, 2 away at Seaham and North Shields and 3 at home against Whickham, Penrith and Bishop Auckland.

We displayed a brilliant away performance against Seaham who posed a clear game plan to deny and frustrate us by defending low and keeping many players behind the ball.

Our quality took a while on the day to get up to scratch but eventually we started to move the ball with pace and intensity which allowed us to break down their low defensive line. We showed a lot of quality and demonstrated our cutting edge with four goals on the day.

On the following Tuesday we hosted our near rivals Whickham, who had developed a momentum at the end of the last season with their new management team which had clearly continued on the pitch with good results and impressive signings. It ended up a close-fought game which we eventually came out on top with a 2-1 win. It was a hard-fought win on the back of our forever building match load against a team who clearly wanted to come and make a statement.

Following a break in the fixtures that weekend, the weekend we should have all been suited and booted ready for the big game at Wembley supported by our amazing supporters I should add... we headed to the team in form at the top of the table, North Shields FC. Following last year’s big defeat on their home turf at our hands, you can tell there was a keen edge for revenge.

Unfortunately, on the night this intent was clear to see especially in the first half and we didn’t match up to it and that was the killer on the night. Going 3-0 down was always a hard task but we displayed in the last half hour that if we hadn’t started so slow and brought the right levels of determination, quality, and game management right from the start that we could and in my opinion would have won the game.

A response was needed but the one we offered up wasn’t expected with the 9-0 thrashing of Penrith. A game that also marked my return to the match day squad and the pitch.

Luckily for myself and Michael Richardson, both returning to the squad after a while out due to injury, the game was wrapped up at half-time which allowed the management team to get match minutes into us with no real threat of an effect on the end result. After being out for 5 weeks, it was exciting to get back involved and I’m glad I’ve been able to do so quickly, cutting the expected injury period by 2 to 3 weeks. Goals coming from all areas of the pitch on the day and more from our recent acquisition Lee Mason who showed his real quality and threat which will provide our already strong forward line with further competition. He then followed up against Bishop Auckland with another couple of goals, securing another three points with the game finishing 4-2.

Knowing Lee from my time at South Shields, he’s a great lad with unrivalled ability and experience who can help us kick on from our strong start and help build our momentum and converting that into league winning form.

The longer we can keep him at the club, the more we will see of his goals and attacking flair. Hopefully something can be sorted to make his loan term longer and maybe staying beyond its completion.

Mark Foden Mark has established himself as Hebburn's number one after joining from Blyth midway through last season. Here he talks about the start of the season, Hebburn's new number 2 (Andrew Coulson) and why he doesn't believe the title race has even started yet.

Q: What have you made of the season so far?

MF: I’d say we’ve done pretty well. Attacking wise we’ve done very well with a clear example being when we scored nine goals in one game against Penrith. The only game where maybe we didn’t turn up at the front was North Shields away, but even then, to play as badly as we did and still only get beat by a goal against a top side shows that we’ve got something about us. Defensively, we’ve been pretty sound.

It’s just been the odd goal that has let us down but we’ve set a very high standard so far this season.

Q: It’s interesting to hear that you’re not completely happy with the defensive performances. Five clean sheets and a total of six goals conceded from your opening eight league games, that sounds really good on the surface doesn’t it?

MF: Yeah don’t get me wrong, it’s very good. Considering where the team was last year, it’s much improved. But I feel the demands we’ve got this year are far greater, especially when you look at the squad we’ve got and the cover we’ve got. The back four I’d say is the best in the league, no matter who plays there. Jack [Donaghy] has come in and done really well while Louis has been out and we’ve not been able to field what people would probably consider the usual back four from last year. I think if you want to win the league, you’ve got to set yourself a high standard and that is what we’re demanding from ourselves.

Q: Since that first defeat of the season at North Shields, we’ve taken nine points from a possible nine.

How pleased are you and the lads with the way you have bounced back since that game?

MF: I think we’ve done really well, especially when you consider North Shields is the first time we’ve been beat all season, including preseason as well.

It’s the first time we’ve not turned up, every lad that played that night will admit that. The reaction is what you’d expect. The way we turned it around in the next game against Penrith tells you exactly what you need to know about the lads and the character within the team. To go out and score nine goals, regardless of what league you’re in or which team it is, is some achievement. /HebburnTownFC 88 || @HebburnTownFC

Q: A new number two goalkeeper was brought in this summer with young Andrew Coulson joining. It feels weird to describe you as a senior goalkeeper as you’re quite young yourself, but as the senior ‘keeper how do you feel he has done in training since joining?

MF: We haven’t had many training sessions due to the nature of the league. It has been Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday since we started. Although it has been clear when we have trained and in warmups that you can see what he has got. There’s no doubt that in the future he will definitely play at least in the Northern League, it’s just a waiting game for when it will happen. I’ve been there and obviously got my chance to be number one at only 23 to 24-years-old which doesn’t happen often nowadays.

I’ve got to thank Kev for that. For Andy, it’s just a case of having to be patient and being ready, you don’t know what could happen and I could end up picking up an injury and he will be needed. It’s just the joys of being a number two. As much as I hate it, it’s one of those things you need to go through. From what I’ve seen of him, he’s done really well every time he has been called upon. He’s really good to work with, as is Jason [Miller], it’s a good wee group we’ve got.

“I think if you want to win the league, you’ve got to set yourself a high standard and that is what we’re demanding from ourselves."

MF: We’ve done really well in that sense so far, picking up three points consistently even when we’ve not played brilliant. At the end of the day, it’s far too early to say what the title race is looking like. Someone could pick up or someone could drop out, we’re only eight or nine games in. People might be looking at the way we’ve started and thinking we might win the league, but it’s far too early to say that. We’ll start to see whether we’ve got what it takes when we’re making those trips in December and January, playing on those heavy pitches and having to fight for every point. I think we are the best footballing side in the league, but that only gets you so far in this league. It’s a case of when it comes to those games that turn into a fight and playing on rubbish pitches, that’s when the character of the team will come out.

It’s early days but I’ve got no doubt we can perform and adapt to different conditions when it comes to it, but you can’t make anyone favourites until it comes to that.

Q: Our midweek game against Stockton was called off.

Does that affect momentum at all, and was it a shame to have what seemed like such a huge game postponed when you were prepared for it?

MF: Tonight is just all about the three points. It doesn’t matter who you play, it’s far too early in the season to think about games as deciders. At the minute, it’s a case of picking up the three points, no matter how it comes or who it comes against, you just pick up the points early and the league table looks after itself so that hopefully at the end of the season you’re challenging towards the top. For now, we have to take every game as it comes.

Q: It’s looking like the title race might be much closer this season than it was looking prior to last season being voided, with a few more teams possibly in the picture.

With that in mind, how important has it been to build momentum early on and put points on the board from the start?

U18s Make History against Hartlepool

There was also a Close drive that rose above the bar and another Kirwan free-kick from the left was spilled by Churchill, only to be cleared before a blue shirt reacted.

With the hour approaching Hartlepool went even closer.

Kirwan was this time involved for winning the free-kick and then Close’s right-foot curler from 22 yards rocked the centre of the crossbar.

Lines, one of three born in the town, somehow side-footed Kirwan’s corner wide from inside six yards as McGuckin and Co were left wondering how it was not level.

Report courtesy of Hartlepool United FC: Niall Docherty had forced Mauro Asikaugo into a save from distance before he was beaten inside the seventh minute.

Hebburn’s Harry Scurfield won a foul on the edge of the area when he was brought down by Oliver Cann. Town centre-back Short did the rest, side-footing low and with power inside the bottom left corner of Asikaugo’s net.

Rather than collapse after the frustrating start, the Hartlepool teenagers grew in confidence as the first half wore on and the only disappointment was they didn’t test goalkeeper Cieran Churchill enough.

Connor Gales showed some nice touches on the right and got in behind a couple of times, and he had shouts for a penalty waved away when the home players felt he got to the ball first ahead of Churchill.

There were a few efforts off target, including one when the lively Harry Close cut inside from the left and directed a shot over the bar when things appeared to open up in front of him.

Hebburn defended strongly as well as looking to threaten while Hartlepool’s midfield of Josh Daley, Mckellan Lines and the impressive Mackenzie Kirwan all looked to move the ball around well in the middle.

It was still the visitors who forced Newcastle-based Asikaugo into the next save, when he dived strongly to his right to hold Scurfield’s distance drive.

Hartlepool started the second half full of intent and earned a free-kick within a couple of minutes on the right.

Kirwan’s deep delivery to the back post was met by towering left-back Josh Hatton’s header. That flew the wrong side of the upright from six yards.

Hebburn reminded the hosts what they could conjure up too with quarter of an hour to go. Kain Campbell was played in behind the left-back and his drive from a tight angle was stopped by Asikaugo. The same player dragged another effort wide from a similar area.

Hartlepool pushed on in the closing stages but were unable to find that extra bit of magic required to force penalties and defeat left every player floored on the surface.

The win sets up a home tie against AFC Fylde.

The tie will be played this Tuesday (20th October) at the Green Energy Stadium and it would be great to see a good turnout to support the lads.

U18s Manager Norman Gray on his side making history What a night it was at the 7,865 capacity Victoria Park... it's just a shame it was in effect 'behind closed doors' except for parents and club staff.

We played some good possession football and actually could have wrapped the game up with a one-on-one and other attempts.

The lads became the first team in Hebburn Town history to progress to the Third Qualifying round of the FA Youth Cup. We knew it was always going to be a tough task which it certainly was.

It's AFC Fylde Academy in the next round...another tough game but at least the lads are at home. Hopefully we can get a few of the Hornets faithful through the door to cheer the lads on and give them the best possible chance of going even further.

The lads went in front in the 7th minute by a cracking free kick from Dillan Short. The first half was a good contest with both teams creating chances.

In my eyes, the second half was outstanding as a manager.

The lads showed a fantastic desire to not concede, something which sometimes isn't always apparent with younger players. Hartlepool had a lot of the ball in the second half but the lads restricted them to crosses and any attempts were wide or dealt with easily by our keeper.

Hebburn Town support Wear Red Day Hebburn Town, along with Hebburn Town Juniors, were pleased to support Show Racism The Red Card's 'Wear Red Day' on Friday.

Wear Red Day is a national day of action which encourages schools, businesses and individuals to wear red and donate ÂŁ1 to help fund anti-racism education for young people and adults across the UK. Every penny raised during Wear Red Day enables education and campaign workers to work with more young people and adults across the UK to challenge racism in society.

Despite progress, racism still remains a huge problem in football across all levels.

If more people are aware of their work, word spreads quciker to those who aren't We would also like to encourage you to install Kick It Out's app, which has a 'Report It' function that allows you to report incidents of racial abuse thay you may witness or suffer at football grounds.

Even if you are not the target of the abuse, if you witness any form of abuse at a football ground, we would encourage you to report it.

The more people taking action, the more it is stamped out of our beautiful game.

As a community club, Hebburn Town want to do everything we can to help create a better environment on the football pitch and across the community for people of all backgrounds.

Sunderland RCA Club History

Sunderland RCA

Sunderland RCA FC started life as Ryhope Youth Club. Its first season was in the Seaham and District League in 1963. The first game was against Seaham UDC at the Seaham CW ground, now home to Seaham Red Star, and it was a 3 - 3 draw. The first seeds had been sown three years earlier, in 1960, when the Ryhope Youth Club Centre opened in the Welfare Hall.

In 1965 the club moved to the Colliery Welfare ground and in 1971 changed its name to Ryhope Community Association. Competing in the Seaham, then Houghton and District Leagues, the club enjoyed success with eight cup wins and four league titles.

Rejected by the Wearside League because a Ryhope team already played in it, the club folded after the 1975-75 season. Re-formed three years later, the club joined the Northern Alliance in 1978 and won the League Challenge Cup at St James Park in Newcastle, in only their third season. Ryhope CA were also league runners up that year, even though they were reduced to playing on a school field.

After some persuasion, the ambitious club convinced the council to lease then some Best FA Cup derelict land - Meadow Park was underway.

Performance Third Qualifying Round Financial help was obtained from Sunderland and Tyne and Wear Councils and the Sports (1984–85, 1997–98) Council to build a football ground. The club members and community joined together to Best FA Trophy carry out the building work, resulting in the Performance First Round (1985–86) enclosed ground where football games are played and enjoyed today.

Best FA Vase Performance Fourth Round (2018–19) In 1982 the club was a founder member of the Northern League Second Division, achieving promotion as runner up in the 1983-84 season. Despite a league placing of tenth the next season, survival proved difficult and the club was relegated in 1988.

In 1999 a new era commenced with the amalgamation with Kennek Roker of the Wearside League to form Kennek Ryhope Community Association. The seasons from 2003 onwards were tough, but for the season 2006-07, the club joined forces with Springboard Sunderland and a new era as Sunderland RCA FC began.

Progress continues to be made both on and off the pitch and after finishing fourth in the previous two seasons Sunderland RCA FC were promoted as runners-up to Stokesley FC in season 2009-10 - a great achievement. Our first season back in Division 1 started badly, but we picked ourselves up, had a purple patch and finished the season in 13th place.

Progress continued in the following season when we achieved our highest finish in the league (4th) under the management of Neil Hixon. The following season saw us almost relegated and we only retained first division status after a vote at the AGM went in our favour. The introduction of Martin Swales as manager brought a renewed belief to the club and the 2015 - 16 season saw a great FA Vase run where we reached the 5th round proper before being beaten by Bristol Manor Farm. This was followed by a similar run in the 2016-17 season, exiting in the 5th round against Newport Pagnell. In the 2017-18 season the club equalled its highest Northern League placing, finishing fourth after a sensational late season surge, when the side played highly entertaining and incisive attacking football.

Sunderland RCA Player Profiles Robbie Dean (Goalkeeper) "Deano" signed last season from Marske United where he was part of the team that secured promotion from the Northern League in the 2017/18 season having also helped them win the title in 2014/15. He was also part of Spennymoor Town's FA Vase winning team in 2013 when they beat Tunbridge Wells at Wembley. A great shot stopper and a keeper with great vision, able to turn defence into attack.

Neil Frampton (Goalkeeper) After impressing in pre-season training the management team have signed Niall. He has quick reflexes and is a great shot stopper, he deals with crosses efficiently and has confidence in abundance.

Max Allen (Defender) Max joined the club last season after being released from Newcastle United. He is a solid dependable defender who is comfortable on the ball and is a good passer of the ball.

Ben Errington (Defender) Ben has been signed on a dual contract with Ourselves and South Shields.

He is a tall central defender who is very good in the air and has deceptively quick feet. His no nonsense approach to defending may be old school but its effective.

Brad Forster (Defender) Brad returns once again to RCA after spending a number of years at Sunderland West End. Another no nonsense central defender he loves a tackle and is very good in the air.

Craig Hodgson (Defender) Craig is now into his fifth season at RCA having previously played for Dunston UTS and Bishop Auckland. He can play as a central defender or in the centre of midfield and he is equally effective in either role. He reads the game well, is good in the air, loves a tackle and has the vision to pick out attacking options quickly.

Ross McNab (Defender) Ross starts his sixth season with the club after returning from Billingham Synthonia. A left sided player, Ross has developed into a very good full back who is equally at home playing in the centre of defence. Defensively he is very competent, loves to get forward in support of his midfield and has a great range of passing.

Ross Preston (Defender) Ross is another player who is starting his fifth consecutive season with the club. Injuries last season reduced his appearances but when he regains full fitness there a few better central defenders in the league. His partnership with "Swanna" is certainly in the top two or three in the league. Ross is a powerful centre back who is good in the air, is a good distributer of the ball and has the ability to read the game and make it look easy.

Greg Swansbury (Defender) Club Captain, Greg is starting his fifth season at RCA. At 6'4", Greg is a powerful, imposing, no nonsense, old school central defender. As expected, he is good in the air, but he is also deceptively good on the ground with great awareness of situations as they develop. His leadership on the pitch is inspirational and he always leads by examble and is 100% committed to the football club both on and off the pitch.

James Armstrong (Defender) James returns to RCA after a season out through injury, this will be his sixth season at the club. James career so far includes spells at Spennymoor Town FC, Sunderland AFC and Hull City. He is a versatile player who can operate in both midfield and defence. He has good vision and awareness and his defence splitting passes and free kicks are a joy to watch.

Craig Hodgson (Defender/Midfielder) Craig is now into his fifth season at RCA having previously played for Dunston UTS and Bishop Auckland. Callum Hope (Utility) We welcome Callum back after an absence of 4 seasons. He is a product of the Stadium of Light Academy where he spent several years before being released and joining Gateshead before signing for Durham City. He can play in midfield or up front.

Dominic Agnew (Midfielder) We have signed "Dom" on a dual registration from South Shields. He is an exciting young prospect who is speedy, not afriad of a challenge and has very good vision, is an excellent passer of the ball.

Thomas Bell (Midfielder) Tom is a product of our youth set up. Having impressed the management team in pre-season a decision was taken to promote him to the first team squad. .

Thomas Best (Midfielder) Tom joined us on a month's work experience from Hull City Academy at the end of last season which was curtailed by Covid-19, he was subsequently released by Hull giving us the opportunity to sign him on a regular basis.

Clayton Davis (Midfielder) Clayton is starting his seventh season at the club. He is a dynamic, speedy winger/defender who loves to take on defenders. Clayton is also a great crosser of the ball and chips in with the odd goal. He is one of those rare breed of players who always has a smile on his face and is great to have around the dressing room.

Henry Dorward (Midfielder) Henry returns for his second season at RCA having signed last season after being released by Morecambe FC. A defensive minded midfielder he still managed to score his fair share of goals in the Morecambe Academy team.

Dylan Elliott (Midfielder) Dylan, is now beginning his fifth season with RCA having joined us from Easington Colliery. He was at Sunderland AFC from the age of 8 to 15, before joining Hartlepool United on a scholarship from the age of 16 to 19.

He is a competitive central midfielder with a phenomenal range of passes and is always fully committed in the tackle.

James Fairley (Midfielder) James has signed for RCA during the close season after spells at Whitley Bay and Bishop Auckland last season. Prior to that he was at Marske United. During the pre-season he has shown his willingness and effectiveness both in midfield and as a forward. He is very skillfull and has an eye for goal.

Stephen Callen (Winger) Stephen starts his seventh season with RCA. Stephen is a pacy and dynamic player who is equally at home on either wing or played up front as a striker. Strong and powerful, he has great touch and control on the ball and possesses a terrific shot which will see him produce his fair share of goal scoring opportunities.

Nathan O'Neill (Forward) This is Nathan's fifth season at RCA, having signed from neighbours Ryhope Colliery Welfare. Tall and dominating in the air, Nathan is capable of scoring all kinds of goals, from two yard tap-ins, and headers to 25 yard screamers. He proved last season that he is effective in a central midfield role. There are not many better strikers in the Northern League when he is firing on all cylinders.

Mark Davison (Forward) Mark "Sparky" Davison needs no introduction for Northern League football fans. A strong and direct centre forward who can be relied upon to score with head and feet as well as setting up opportunities for others, "Sparky" was RCA's leading goalscorer last season and is looking forward to bagging a few in the coming season. Previous clubs include: Ryton, Washington, Spennymoor and Morpeth.

Anthony Callaghan (Utility) RCA welcome back Anth to the club. The former Washington, South Shields and Blyth player is a great addition to the squad. He is a left sided player who is comfortable playing at full back, wing back or up front, He has got great composure, pace and flair.

Luke Salmon has joined fellow Northern League Division One side Ashington AFC. Luke was placed on the transfer list as Hebburn Town could not offer him the minutes he deserves.

He managed four first team 3. Spectators must socially distance at all appearances, playing a bittimes, this means remaining a 2m distance part role in the early season.

Luke joined in the summer after a spell with Whitley Bay to provide cover down the left hand side, but found playing time hard to come by.

Fixture News We kick off our Durham Challenge Cup campaign next week against Washington FC. We will travel to Sunderland to face Washington at the Ford Football Hub on Wednesday 21st October.

Meanwhile, Tuesday's postponed fixture at home to Stockton Town has been moved to Tuesday 10th November.

Club Hebburn was very different back in 1912. The collieries that had changed it from a small agricultural hamlet to a cosmopolitan but pretty grimy industrial town were nearing peak employment of 1,864 men, the shipyards launched by Andrew Leslie were in full vigour and the town, 11 years earlier, had welcome a diminutive Frenchman called Alphonse Reyrolle.

Reyrolle opened an engineering works, initially employing just 50 men, in the former dye factory next to St Aloysius’s church. At its peak Reyrolles would employ 12,000 men from a wide range of backgrounds, religions and cultures and export to 70 countries and be known worldwide.

The company also started a football team, encouraged by industrialist and mine owner Sir Ralph Carr-Ellison, another famous name in Hebburn history who provided the sports ground on which the Northern League side still plays. Football has played a major part in the life of the town, a cornerstone of its history.

Probably it also helped the population forget the harshness of day-to-day life, families of ten and more in insanitary, two-up two-down houses. When the last pit closed in 1931, it had claimed the lives of almost 200 men and boys.

There’d been plenty of teams before 1912, of course, notably Hebburn Argyle – kicked off in 1882 by Father Toner, the priest at St Aloysius’s. The town had so many Scots, they became known as the Tyneside Highlanders. Pre-World War 1 derbies with Jarrow would attract crowds of 8,000.The Geordie town also had Shinty and Curling Clubs and even an annual Highland Games, organised by the Hebburn Celtic Society.

Alphonse Reyrolle had actively encouraged his workers to take part in sport, including “barefoot” football, and formed the Employees’ Benevolent Association. The team formed in 1912, elected to the second division of the Jarrow and District Junior League, was suitably booted, however.

They progressed, flourished in the 1930s, had a wartime season in the North Eastern League, won the Durham Challenge Cup in 1943, and returned to the Northern Combination where they stayed until 1958. In 1959-60, Reyrolles had another season in the terminally ailing North Eastern League but finished bottom with just eight points.

The club then had 28 seasons in the Wearside League, and won the league in 1966 and the Monkwearmouth Cup in 1968.

In 1988, following the demise of the iconic engineering company A. Reyrolle, the name was changed to Hebburn and application made to join the Northern League – though it was before the days of automatic promotion and relegation and there wasn’t a vacancy. The ground was improved and other clubs canvassed. The break, however, came when North Shields created a vacancy by deciding by deciding to play elsewhere. The team played its first Northern League game on August 19 1989, winning 2-1 at Shotton Comrades, won promotion and the Durham Challenge Cup in 1992 but were relegated – contentiously – for failing to meet ground criteria. They won the Craven Cup in 1999-2000.

History In season 2011/12, Hebburn reached the FA Cup final qualifying round – a dream tie at neighbours Gateshead, from whom they were separated by 125 league places – and secured promotion in third place after a fascinating and exciting final ten games which took the team up to the first division In 2012/13 Hebburn Town met their target of staying in the first division after a nerve racking end to the season.

During the close season however manager Paul Bennett decided to leave the club for Jarrow Roofing along with his assistant Dean Nicholson. Unfortunately the team followed suit and in June the club had to start from scratch; two ex-Hebburn players Scott Oliver and Davy Bell took up the challenge and the new management team successfully assembled a squad of mainly young players with a base of experienced players to give the team a good mix.

Unfortunately, the very young and somewhat inexperienced side could not avoid relegation although they played with spirit, commitment and enthusiasm throughout the season. The team received many plaudits for their playing style and attitude and also achieved some notable results; although relegated the team got stronger as the season progressed.

The squad in 2017/2018 season had a magnificent run from Jan 2018 – May 2018 that saw the Hornets record just 2 losses in all competitions, this fine form secured promotion to the Ebac Northern League Division One by finishing in second place.

In their first season back in Division 1, Hebburn finished as runners up. Michael Richardson was the side’s top scorer with 25 goals, and then manager Scott Oliver took the side to the fifth round of the FA Vase.

The Vase run was remarkable as the home attendance record was broken twice. 1,302 people attended the game against City of Liverpool in the first round, and 1,310 people were at the game against West Auckland in the fifth round.

In the summer of 2019, manager Scott Oliver stepped down from his role and reserve team manager Kevin Bolam stepped up to the role. The new management team of Kevin Bolam and assistant Mick Mulhern had a promising first season in charge, with the team in the promotion hunt before the season was voided as well as reaching the final of the FA Vase which is still yet to be played.

Hebburn Town has now enjoyed 30 seasons and over 1,000 games in the Northern League. Hopefully, they will continue to build on their great legacy for another 1,000 games.

By Dave Coulthard Bishop went into the game rock bottom of Ebac Northern League Division 1 with only 1 point from their first 6 games, however with new Manager Andy Toman in the dugout and new signing Ross Gardner from Thornaby on the pitch, they’d have been hoping a change in fortunes was just around the corner.

Hebburn recovered from Wednesday night’s 3-2 defeat at North Shields by putting 9 past Penrith without reply on Saturday, so went into this game full of confidence looking to reclaim the top spot.

Hebburn got the game underway kicking towards the Sportsy and almost had Graeme Armstrong through in the first 30 seconds of the game, however Nicholas Liversedge came out quickly to clear the ball for a throw-in.

If the first half had burst into life in the first 30 seconds then the second half started in an even more eventful fashion. The ball clattered into referee Mark Ryan, who appeared to turn his ankle and needed lengthy treatment. The injury would bring his evening to an end and whilst having an able assistant to take the whistle there was no fourth official to run the line.

After some discussion with both benches, a Jimmy Hill scenario was invoked as a Hebburn Town goalkeeping coach, as a qualified official, agreed to take the flag.

Following an 8 minute delay, play resumed with Martin almost immediately doubling the advantage as he again stepped inside and lashed a left-footed drive over the bar.

It took another 10 minutes for the home side to establish that cushion. Martin was again in the thick of the action as his ball across goal from the right found Lee Mason at the back stick for the on-loan striker to tap home his 3rd goal in 2 Hebburn appearances.

Their positive start was soon rewarded as Tom Potter stepped inside and unleashed a 25-yard effort into the top corner to give the home side a 3rd minute lead. The effort went in off the underside of the bar and left Liversedge with no chance.

Robbie Spence was next to try his luck from distance but his low right-footed strike was narrowly wide of the left-hand post.

In the 9th minute, Hebburn hearts were in mouths as a short ball back to keeper Mark Foden only just reached him before the Bishop striker and much like his opposite number in the early stages he played the sweeper role well.

A chance came for the visitors on 17 minutes when Liam Goldsborough floated an angled free-kick into the box and captain Christopher Winn glanced his header narrowly wide and they kept the pressure up on the home side with Winn soon having another headed chance at the back post following a long throw-in but he couldn’t loop his effort over Foden.

Hebburn suffered a blow midway through the half when Tom Potter’s evening was ended by what looked like a hamstring injury and he was replaced by Olly Martin.

The next opportunity also fell Bishop’s way as Kyle Morris got away down the right-hand side but his deflected effort was comfortable for Foden.

On the half-hour, Hebburn came close to doubling their advantage when they were awarded a free-kick about 5 yards outside the area. Martin’s effort struck the wall and clipped the outside of the post on the way behind for a corner.

Winn’s corner for the visitors at the other end was then headed over by Liam Potter but it was Hebburn again with the next big chance when Armstrong expertly flicked the ball over the last defender but Liversedge got down well to smother his effort and Martin couldn’t convert from the rebound.

Bishop however would not lie down and Winn’s shouts for a penalty were waved away by the replacement referee and Morris then shot straight at Foden after a cross was nodded down into his path. Kieron Parnaby then twisted and turned in the box before firing wide.

The pressure finally resulted in their first goal of the evening in the 73rd minute when a great ball from Winn across the face of goal found Hogan at the back stick to turn it home.

Hebburn could breathe a little easier just 4 minutes later as Mason completed his brace to restore the 2 goal cushion, firing in a rebound after his first effort was blocked.

With 10 minutes to play (well, 20 if you count all the stoppage time to come) Dan Groves received a yellow card for a heavy challenge on Hogan in front of the dugouts. The resulting freekick wasn’t dealt with by Foden but Bishop could not capitalise.

In the 86th minute however, they were once more back within 1 when another long throw from Parnaby was brought down and turned in by Morris at the near post.

As the game entered stoppage time, the visitors came close to an equaliser as new signing Gardner swung a free-kick over the bar but after some nervy final moments it would be Hebburn who got the chance to wrap things up when a penalty was awarded in the 10th minute of stoppage time.

Graeme Armstrong stepped up and made no mistake as he fired low into the net, despite Liversedge guessing the right way and that proved to be the final action of the evening as the Hornets celebrated a 4-2 victory that returned them to the summit.

Bishop continued to ask questions of the Hebburn defence as the first-half entered its closing stages with a scramble in the box after Foden failed to punch away another long throw, resulting in Luke Hogan firing over and then Foden was forced into a good low save as Morris flicked Winn’s cross goalbound.

Though Hebburn had created the best of the first-half opportunities, it looked for all the world that the sides would go in level but that changed 4 minutes before the interval. Groves found some space down the right and swung a cross into the near post and despite it not finding a team mate, Lowery was unfortunate to turn it into his own net when trying to control, with the ball taking an age to creep over the line.

After already receiving a gift for their opening goal, the Hornets couldn’t believe their luck just 4 minutes after the restart. Ben Richardson’s misplaced pass was intercepted by Armstrong and the prolific striker made no mistake to double the advantage.

Saturday 10th October Whitley Bay 0-4 Hebburn Town

By Dave Coulthard Hillheads is a ground I have fond memories of, having been a frequent visitor in the 90s when a workmate of my Dad and former FA Vase winner John Caffrey kept goal for Bay. I’ve always found them a very friendly and welcoming club and today was no different.

The disruptive start to the Northern League season meant that the home side already had 3 games in hand on their opponents and went into this game sitting in 15th place with 2 wins and 2 defeats from their opening 4 games, following a 3-1 defeat at home to Thornaby in midweek, despite Adam Shanks having given them an early lead.

Hebburn, fresh from a hard-fought 4-2 win against Bishop Auckland, came into the game knowing a win would return them to the top of the table with North Shields in FA Vase action this weekend.

The last 3 meetings between the two sides at Hillheads had produced 26 goals so I was hoping for another classic encounter this afternoon.

The first opportunity of the game fell the visitors’ way a few minutes into the contest when Graeme Armstrong shrugged off Scott Lowery but couldn’t bundle the ball past keeper Chris Bannon who got down well and smothered the ball at his feet.

In the 9th minute, Olly Martin picked up the ball for the Hornets on the right and cut inside his man before dragging his effort wide of the upright then Armstrong fired across the face of goal just a minute later.

Bay’s first real effort came along in the 13th minute when Craig McFarlane fired an ambitious effort wide from 30-yards in his first league start of the campaign.

Soon after a ball over the top found Armstrong but his effort was tipped over by Bannon. The resulting corner from Martin was headed over by captain Louis Storey on his return to the starting XI. In the 18th minute, Armstrong had another half-chance with a close range header but he couldn’t quite get enough on Darren Lough’s left-wing cross and Bannon made a comfortable save.

After 32 minutes a glorious chance went begging for the visitors when Dan Groves found Armstrong in the box and he got to the by-line and pulled the ball back for Groves in the centre of the box, but the full back completely missed the ball and Bay cleared.

In the 54th minute, Matty Weirs and Mark Robinson combined well for the home side and found Lewis Orrell in space on the right of the box but his clipped effort drifted wide. Craig Hennis then hit a firm effort from distance but it was straight down the throat of Mark Foden.

After 57, Storey turned well on the edge of the area and laid the ball off for Groves but he fired off target. The next big opportunity was with 64 minutes on the clock when Martin picked the ball up on the right and found Lee Mason at the back stick but he couldn’t get enough on it to turn the ball beyond the keeper.

At the other end Richard Coulson fired an effort straight at Foden and McFarlane then hit another shot wide.

With 18 minutes left to play Jack Donaghy strode out of defence and found Amar Purewal down the left. The striker, on his return to the team, touched the ball beyond the defender but Bannon intercepted well with his legs.

Hebburn continued to push for the 3rd and in the 78th minute it almost arrived when Groves’ cross was nodded back across goal

by Purewal but Martin couldn’t convert from close range and Bannon gathered on the line.

It took less than a minute for Hebburn to make the points safe as Martin created some magic on the right as he twisted and turned before pulling the ball back for Cedwyn Scott and the substitute fired into the net from close range.

The final opportunity for Bay came with a minute of normal time to play when Kieran Brannon won possession deep in the Hebburn half and fired wide from the edge of the area but Hebburn added a fourth in stoppage time to add the icing on the cake when Storey played in Carl Taylor who finished low into the bottom corner to return Hebburn to the top.

Memory Match Hebburn Town 3-0 Sunderland RCA Saturday 2nd November 2019 FA Vase We faced Sunderland RCA three times last season, all coming during the first half of the season before the turn of the year.

The final game between the two sides was the start of both of our FA Vase campaign after good 2018/19 campaigns meant we both entered at the Second Round Proper.

It looked like a tough draw to start our campaign and proved just that.

Hebburn were on top, but were frustrated by a solid RCA side.

But when RCA keeper Robert Dean was sent off, it looked like the day would be made much easier for The Hornets.

However, that did not prove to be the case, as substitute 'keeper Kieran Ezard put in a blinding display for 10-man RCA to frustrate Hebburn.

It took until 75 minutes before Hebburn finally got the breakthrough when Robbie Spence headed home Michael Richardson's cross.

Richardson then got the second, finishing well after a good through ball from Olly Martin.

And Graeme Armstrong rounded off the scoring, with a good finish on the end of Ben Dibb-Fuller's low cross.

We also beat them 3-0 at home in the league and played out a stunning 3-3 draw in a game full of late drama away from home.

We put the spotlight on our next Northern League opponents. We travel to play Washington in the Durham Challenge Cup on Wednesday ahead of a league game at home to Newcastle Benfield.

We are away to Washington FC in the Durham Challenge Cup in midweek, playing at the Ford Football Hub in Sunderland.

Following that, we have another home league game against Newcastle Benfield.

Benfield have had a very good start to the season and currently occupy second place in the Northern League table.

Stuart Elliott's men have picked up six wins, a draw and three losses, those defeats coming in away games against Newton Aycliffe and Consett and a home game against Stockton.

They have travelled well recently, picking up 7 points from their last 3 away games.

Their most recent game was a 4-1 victory over today's opponents, Sunderland RCA in midweek and they will hope to continue their good form with a home game against Guisborugh this afternoon.

Among their ranks is still the evergreen veteran striker Paul Brayson, now 43-years-old, he is still hungry for goals in the Northern League.

They have a few ever-presents such as Richard Slaughter, Peter Glen-Ravenhill, and Lewis Scorgie, as well as a bunch of young talents like Matty Parker, Cyril Giraud, Joe Robson among a few others under the age of 23.

We had mixed results against Benfield last season.

We beat them 3-1 away from home in the league thanks to goals from Louis Storey and Robbie Spence.

However, they dumped us out of the Northern League Cup in January, goals from Peter Glen-Ravenhill and Paul Brayson giving Benfield a 2-0 victory at the Green Energy Stadium.

Editor’s Notes Hello and welcome to the Green Energy Stadium for today's home league game against Sunderland RCA. I also want to wish a warm welcome to Hebburn to everyone connected with Sunderland RCA who has travelled up for today's game.

It is also nice to see that the management team have managed to get some minutes into Louis Storey and Michael Richardson.

After two weeks out due to Covid isolation, I'm absolutely buzzing to be back at the football today.

You can see watching on from the sidelines how important Louis is to the team, a brilliant captain who demands the best from his teammates.

I was really enjoying being back watching live football and was proud to have not missed a competitive Hebburn game this season, so I was gutted to have to miss games.

As for Michael, since I started covering non-league football, he is probably one of my favourite players to watch.

It also meant that I could not bring you live coverage at the usual standard, match reports and highlights packages.

He's one of those players that can change the game on his own on his day, he is incredibly talented and it will be great to have him back.

Before I move on, I have to say a big thank you to Dave Coulthard for stepping in and providing match reports from the Bishop Auckland and Whitley Bay games.

Also for today's game, we could be welcoming a new addition off the pitch. Jonny O'Gorman has signed up to cover the club for SportsByte, and might be getting involved more with the club's media output.

Sunderland RCA had a couple of seasons fighting I must say, the lads have been in stunning form, towards the top of the Northern League, but last which almost makes it harder that I couldn't attend. season was an exception with them sitting in mid-table before the season came to an early end.

After the disappointing North Shields defeat, the last game I attended, they won 9-0 against Penrith They have plenty of quality and will definitely provide our lads a stern test. at home, 4-2 at home to Bishop Auckland, and 4-0 away to Whitley Bay last weekend.

We played some very interesting matches against them last season. The away game at Meadow Park in 17 goals scored, 2 conceded. Simply brilliant form. the league featured a comeback, what seemed like a late winner for Hebburn before RCA scored an even later equaliser. The two home games were very different, in the league it was a comfortable 3-0, in the Vase it was a strangely uncomfortable 3-0 against 10 men.

Hopefully, it will be another intriguing game, but more importantly, another Hebburn three points.
