Good afternoon and welcome to this afternoon’s game against a tough Penrith team.

I’d also like to extend a welcome to the staff, players and everyone associated with Penrith to the Green Energy Stadium.

We continue to play with a minimal amount of supporters due to Covid, which isn’t ideal, but at least we are still playing.

150 supporters is better than none and hopefully we can give you all plenty to shout about today.

It’s been a hectic start to the season as the games keep coming thick and fast and we’ve made a decent start to be fair.

The first three months are always a huge test to the depth of any squad as you try and stay relatively injury free and make sure the players get plenty of rest and recovery between games.

We still have a couple of longer term injuries and hopefully there is light at the end of the tunnel regarding those players.

We had a very tough game midweek and sadly the result and performance at North Shields was way below par by our high standards. We gave ourselves a mountain to climb in the last half hour, and to be honest we almost got the equaliser. We simply ran out of time.

It was disappointing to suffer our first defeat but these results happen. We are realistic and realise you simply can’t win every game in this league. Clearly we have to keep defeats to a minimum to achieve success. I guess the key is how you respond to the bad days, but in all honesty we have a great group of players who will want to respond positively. They, like the management team will be desperate go on another winning run. Kevin and i will certainly be looking for a good response today from those selected.

Hopefully we can get three points to keep heading in the right direction.

I personally don’t look at any league table until at least ten games, and even then it doesn’t really matter as it’s a marathon not a sprint.

October is a very busy month and things will certainly be shaping up and settling down after the eight games we play this month. I may have a little peek at the end of the month to see how we are shaping up.

With the busy month in mind we’ve strengthened the group, therefore may I take this opportunity on behalf of Kevin and myself to welcome Lee Mason to the club. Lee joins us on an initial one month loan from South Shields and is certainly a positive addition to the group. Hopefully Lee can help us get to where we want to be.

The last time I spoke to yous was following our highly successful first 7 days of the 2020-21 campaign with a win in the FA cup, FA Vase and against last season’s promotion rivals Shildon. And since then we have largely kicked on with positive results and good performances.

However, we did take our first defeat with the worst performance of the season on Tuesday evening against North Shields away.

We welcomed Pontefract to the Green Energy Sports Ground once again following last season’s cup tie replay.

Unfortunately, we went into the game with four of the starters from 7 days prior at Corinthians picking up knocks and niggles from the vase and league game falling within 3 days of each other.

We have had many run ins withWest especially in the cup competitions across the last 2 years and they’ve certainly been close affairs but the 4-0 thrashing has showed how the two clubs have went in different directions in the last 18-24 months. Both sides had the potential to kick on and be league contenders and be successful in cup competitions and it shows how much we really have pushed on with strength in depth, quality in performance and style of play and identity.

As I said in my last column, we had unfinished business against Pontefract from last season. Going into the game, a positive result would have been a perfect way to finish a week of highly important fixtures for the club however putting the game into perspective it wasn’t essential.

We followed up this win with strong performances away to Seaham and home to Whickham providing very different challenges. Seaham retreated and sat deep and we had to much quality with time and space on the ball. Whickham came with a new spring in their step following a decent string of results and signings and you could see the local derby meant a lot to them. However, once again, as part of a very welcomed trend the season we had too much for our opponents and matched their intensity as well as bringing more quality in the final third.

Once the game was up and running, the visitors showed the quality and strength of a team from a higher tier and definitely started the game on the front foot. After they went down to 10 men closely followed by an equaliser before half time, we felt we were in great position to go through at the half time break.

I must say, the start the team has experienced this season is very exciting. We look dynamic and a force to reckoned with on our day, which comes from a great set of lads who have played alongside each other for almost 2 seasons now with great additions providing healthy competition for places and a common clear focus.

A highly tense and frustrating second half of football came next with opportunities to exploit the number advantage and take the lead. Another sending off for the visitors cams with 10 minutes to go but the opposition showed resilience to limit us to a few half chances and unlike our current form this season we were unable to take advantage of this.

However, we did suffer a blow and a warning in taking our first league defeat away to North Shields earlier this week.

Losing on penalties was harsh and felt like a lost opportunity considering how the game went but wasn’t the end of the world.

It was a quick turnaround once again which is becoming a theme for the season with West Auckland travelling to us again 3 days later. In my opinion, we simply blew them away with a strong, physical and intense performance

Hopefully, we can put that behind us and continue the good start. I am sure we will if we continue to work hard and apply ourselves like we have so far to continue our momentum.

Darren Lough The hard-working full-back is now in his second full season with the club having joined from neighbours South Shields before the start of 2019/20. Here he talks about reacting to Wednesday's defeat, the importance of silverware and the long season ahead.

Q: I guess we should start by addressing this week’s game, what do you think went wrong against North Shields?

DL: We didn’t start very well. I think we gave them too much time as their shape was causing us a few problems and I think we didn’t adapt as well as we should have to that. In a weird way, I think we were kind of waiting for the goals to go in on both sides.

We knew it would be one of those kind of games, we knew we’d score goals eventually so we just had to try and prevent them from scoring when they were on top which we obviously didn’t do well enough.

When they scored two in the second half straight away, we played a bit better, but we shouldn’t need to go down two or three goals before we start playing. That’s schoolboy stuff. I know we’ve had a good start to the season but we haven’t won anything. It’s time to get our feet back on the ground and put three points on the board, treating every game as a cup final until we achieve what we want to achieve.

Q: Unbeaten runs always come to an end in this league. Can it be a good thing sometimes to learn these lessons and have those kinds of games?

DL: Yeah it can be because it gives you a stern reminder that yes we are a good team, but we’re not going to beat everybody. It’s as simple as that. In some games you might not have the rub of the green, decisions might go against you. You might play brilliantly one game and play rubbish and get beat the next game. We’ve got a lot of quality in our squad and nine times out of 10 we should be winning games.

It serves as a reminder that you’ve got to remember that it all comes down to winning things and where you end up at the end of the season. You can go on a long unbeaten run, but that doesn’t mean anything unless you get the trophy at the end of the season.

DL: It is because there are about 40 games in the season. Those games are going to come thick and fast and individual games could come down to factors such as referees decisions, you’re always at risk of getting beat by teams lower down the league and that goes for the other teams around us as well. So you can’t read into the result too much as it’s so early in the season. We’ve got to think, as a team why we had not been beaten for such a long period of time.

It’s because we’ve set such a good standard and beat teams when we should be able to. We’ve got to take encouragement from that and move forward. I think we’ve been bigged up as the team to beat but at the same time we still haven’t won anything. We’re a good team, 100%. But you only start to count as a good team when you start winning things which we’re yet to do. So with over 30 league games left to play, plus the cup games, we could be looking at over 50 games this season. It’s a long way to go.

Q: In general, has it been an encouraging start so far in most of the performances and results?

DL: I think we’ve played really well in the majority of games this season. I think you can class North Shields as we didn’t turn up on the day. North Shields were good at what they did, they grafted well, they executed their system well and they did well to not let us play out. They had a game plan and it shows you Q: As much as we have to take lessons from the result why they’re sitting at the top of the table as it stands.

I think we’re good enough to be up there in top spot and performance, is it important to not look too and we have shown that in most games. It will come much into it? DL: I believe it was the Vase game where I’ve done it.

I’ve hurt my heel and to be honest I don’t even know what I did. At the minute I’m trying to get as many minutes in as I can and I don’t feel I’m up to my full capacity yet. Hopefully that will come in the next couple of games. I want to play as many games as I can as I want to help the team and the club win the league and win trophies. I think that’s why anyone plays football.

On a personal note, I’ve got another couple of gears to go through to get to where I want to be.

Q: How much is this weekend’s game about looking for a reaction?

DL: I think as a squad we’re all annoyed by the North Shields game. I’m sure the fans are wanting a reaction.

All the lads in the squad know what it’s about, we all want to win silverware. We don’t really need any more encouragement than what we naturally give ourselves.

We need to go into this game and treat it like a cup final to make sure we put three points on the board and maybe get going on another unbeaten run to set us up to get our title challenge back on track.

Q: And on our opponents. Do you have much insight into what kind of game you expect from Penrith?

DL: As it’s so early in the season, it’s hard to judge anybody at this moment in time. We’ve played five or six games, so you can look at the league table as much as you want but people might be sitting in a false position. You just have to go into every game like it’s a cup final. If you’re playing well and picking up results, the league table looks after itself.

Q: It feels like you were never out of the squad since joining at the start of last season. Obviously, you’ve had a couple of niggles this season that have kept you out of games. Has it been a tough start for you in that regard?

U18s through to Youth Cup Second Quali Round The Hornets had the better chances in the remainder of the half but Workington were also seeing some joy when they got forward.

Hebburn continued to take control in the second half but were largely frustrated, while Workington also had some good chances on the break.

Dillan Short tested Workington’s 15-year-old goalkeeper Max Smith with a good hit from a free-kick.

Woodroffe, who was so composed for his goal, missed a couple of good chances.

Hebburn Town U18s secured progression in the FA Youth Cup with a 2-1 win over Workington AFC in the First Qualifying Round in front of a healthy crowd of 96 at The Green Energy Stadium.

Goals from Hebburn’s Robert Woodroffe in the 17th minute and Workington’s Joe Palmer in the 29th ensured the sides headed into the break level.

The game looked like it might be heading for penalties despite openings for both sides, most of them coming for Hebburn, until a 91st minute penalty was converted by James Robinson.

The Young Hornets headed into the game thanks to a shoot-out victory over Newcastle Benfield U18s in the previous round and both sides were aware that a trip to Hartlepool to play an academy side would be a reward for a victory.

It looked like an open game early on with chances in the first 10 minutes coming for Hebburn’s Woodroffe who fired wide with an improvised effort inside the box.

Down the other end, Workington’s Palmer hit narrowly wide from just outside the box and Harry Watson was close to opening the scoring with a great free-kick which flashed just over the bar.

It was the Hornets who opened the scoring just after the quarter hour.

An excellent move from Hebburn resulted in Tommie Hepplewhite playing through Woodroffe who turned brilliantly and added a cool finish.

Hebburn looked to take control with the confidence of the goal but faced a setback when the Cumbrian side levelled the scores.

A cross was half-cleared by the Hornets but Palmer was left with a clear sight of goal from just outside the box and added a good low strike into the left corner.

He was right in front of goal on the end of Harry Scurfield’s cross from the right in the 56th minute but could not find the right connection.

Matty Robinson’s dinked effort in the 63rd minute hit the far post before another good chance for Woodroffe a couple of minutes later when his one-on-one was brilliantly saved by Workington’s Smith.

There was a scare at the other end in the 76th minute as Charlie Johnston’s delicate lob looked to be going in, but came off the post.

Substitute Liam Arthur looked to break through late on, knocking the ball around the defender but Smith raced to beat the onrushing attacker to the ball.

It looked like the Young Hornets would be frustrated and would have to face the lottery of penalties again.

But a breakthrough finally came when Thomas Archibald broke into the box and was brought down by the leg of Workington’s Palmer.

Robinson stepped up and slotted the penalty low into the left despite Smith getting a hand to it.

Hebburn rode out a late attack from Workington to earn their place in the Second Qualifying Round where they will be rewarded with that trip to Hartlepool to play their academy side.

Penrith Club History Penrith Football Club was founded in 1894 and first played in local leagues, before joining the Carlisle and District League, becoming league champions on numerous occasions.

Before the start of the season 1948-49 they joined the Northern League where they remained until 1982. During the period whilst in the Northern League they were league runners-up in 1962 and were twice beaten League Cup finalists.

In season 1980-81 they achieved their best performance in the FA Challenge Trophy when they reached the Frist Round Proper, only to be beaten at Alvechurch. However, in the following season 1881-82 Penrith reached the First Round Proper of the FA Challenge Cup, beating Chester 1-0 at Penrith. The Blues lost 0-3 away to Billy Bremner’s Doncaster Rovers in the Second Round Proper. Penrith have reached the FA Challenge Cup First Round Proper twice since beating Chester, only to lose to Hull City and Burnley.

Season 1981-82 was their last in the Northern League, moving over to join the North West Counties League of which they were one of the founder members. In 1983-84 they were runners up in the First Division to Stalybridge Celtic. They then joined the newly formed Northern Premier League First Division.

The highlight of the 1994-95 season was winning the Tennants Floodlit Trophy when the Blues beat Atherton Collieries 2-1. In season 1996-97, before re-joining the Northern League, they again won a Floodlit Trophy beating Newcastle Town 1-0. Penrith have won the Cumberland Cup on sixteen occasions, in 2000-02 they beat Northbank 2-0 at Borough Park, Workington to break a barren period in the competition which went back twenty six years to 1975 when Gretna were beaten 3-1.

Since re-joining the Northern League in the 1997-98 season, their fortunes have fluctuated. After finishing a creditable sixth in the first season they were relegated in the one following. Four seasons in the Second Division saw them finish in tenth, eighth, fourth and in 2002-03 were promoted to the First Division as Champions. In the 2000-01 season, in addition to the Cumberland Cup, they won their first honour in the Northern League after thirty eight seasons of endeavour. South Shields were beaten 5-4 in the Craven Cup Final at Dean Street, Shildon, the game being decided by a golden goal in the first period of extra time.

The club has had many managers over the years, but the most famous by far was Alan Ashman, with whom The Blues enjoyed a successful spell in the 60’s. He went on to manage Carlisle United, taking them from the 4th to the 2nd Division before leaving to manage West Bromwich Albion, with whom he won the FA Cup in 1967-68. After a spell of management in Greece, Alan Ashman took up the reins at Brunton Park for a second time taking Carlisle United into the First Division at the end of the 1973-74 season.

2006-07 saw Penrith pipped for the third promotion place on the last Saturday of the season, but in four days the following week, they demolished Darlington RA 5-1 in the Craven Cup final then went on to beat Carlisle City 1-0 to lift the Cumberland Cup for the fifteenth time. On the same night that the Blues were winning the Cumberland Cup, Penrith Rugby Union were winning their equivalent county trophy and this feat was recognised by Eden District Council with a civic reception for officials and players, when both clubs were presented with silver salvers to mark the occasion.

With the departure from Southend Road to a new stadium at Frenchfield, businessman, Ges Ratcliffe became the owner and converted the club into a limited company but has since handed the club back to its members. Ges also negotiated the reunion of the club with the breakaway Penrith United and the club now has a bright future, running twenty seven teams for season 2018/19 from under 7’s through to the senior team and beyond with the over 35’s. Several ladies and girls teams are now involved as too, the senior ladies being particularly successful.

At the beginning of 2008-09, David Heslop resigned after six years in charge. Richard Prokas and James Tose too on the task of joint managers and took the team to a creditable seventh place in the league. There were also finals in the Cumberland Cup and League Cup losing 2-0 respectively to Workington Reds and Newcastle Benfield.

The Cumberland Cup left a particularly bitter taste after the team were forced to play ten games in 21 days either side of the final – not exactly the best preparation.

The last games of the 2009-10 season saw Penrith lift the Cumberland Senior Cup with a fine 6-0 win over Gilford Park to give Richard and James the silverware their efforts deserved.

In season 2012-13, Brian Williams was persuaded to resurrect his managerial career after a break of some 30 years, but this was temporary and he handed the reins over to Matt Henney mid-season along with Scott Redhead as assistant manager. The duo managed to turn the season around and Penrith finished in a very creditable 14th place, despite flirting with relegation for much of the season.

Season 2015-16 was another season troubled by interruptions due to adverse weather, and while a 14th place was secured, it was generally agreed that the team deserved to be in a higher position.

After eight games in the present season it was decided to dispense with the services of Matt Henney and Jim Nichols took over the mantle. Jim enjoyed his first season and was hugely popular around the club and is held in high regard for his commitment and professionalism to the job but he made a decision to step down just after the beginning of the 2017/18 season due to a bad run of results. The club then appointed Kyle May as Manager and added Andy Coyles to the management team in November 2017 and they worked hard to avoid relegation from Northern League Div I successfully. We looked forward to the 2018/19 season and added extra support for Kyle May in the form of Mark Boyd who we added huge experience and knowledge to the management team.

However after a short period of the 2018-19 season elapsed where results and performances were poor Kyle May resigned as first team manager. Andy Coyles stepped into the hotseat and the club went through a difficult period with an extremely high turnover of players but Andy did a fantastic job of steadying the ship and in fact the 2nd half of the season formed a good stable squad who competed well. We finished bottom but due to other teams resigning from the league we were spared relegation. This was too close for comfort for our club who have maintained our Northern League Div 1 status for a long time now and we prepare for the 2019-20 season with optimism and full of enthusiasm after a busy close season with Andy Coyles continuing to build for the future. We have also added Dave Hewson to the management team.

Dave provides a wealth of experience after joining us from Workington Reds and we look forward to a long and successful relationship.

Grant Davidson - CB/CM Club Captain 'G' is our captain fantastic, a solid consistent player who's competitive nature rubs off on the rest of the squad Ric Faustino - RB The all energy wing back comes back to Frenchfield Park after spending the last 2 seasons at Westmorland league side Appleby.

He made 2 appearances last season for the Bonny Blues, away at Stockton and the Cumberland Cup Final, but returns on a more permanent fixture.

Bruno Pilatos - RB The Angolan born defender moved to the North East with his family as a toddler, he was a regular in the England Youth setup from the age of 15 when he played against Northern Ireland in 2008.

Adam Main- CM 'Macca' is one of the first names on the team sheet, 100% dedicated and a top quality CM

Ben Jackson - CM Ben Jackson was an ever present in the centre of midfield under previous manager's and a very popular favourite with the supporters but a lengthy injury saw him out of the game for a few months. Like Atkinson, he's been playing for Westmorland league side Appleby and getting back to his best.

Sam Bell - CM Bell an exciting and determined midfielder. Has a good work ethic and has shown impressive leadership skills.

Will Paul - Everywhere Playing well over 700 games for Penrith AFC Will can still slot in almost anywhere on the field and deliver a great performance to help the team.

Sean Law - RW/LW Sean is in his second spell with the club joining late in the 18/19 campaign, good one the ball and a great brain, Sean will be a good addition to the squad Lamin Cham - wing The ex Workington wide man has put pen to paper to join the Bonny Blues for the 2019-20 season. Lamin has bags of pace and is an exciting prospect for the future.

Chris Wraighte - wing The skilful winger comes back to Frenchfield Park after a previous spell a couple of years ago. Manager Andy Coyles is delighted to add the former Barrow player to his squad and is excited to see Chris play amongst a talented set of players.

Bobby Atkinson - ST Bobby impressed a couple of seasons ago when he found the back of the net in some all energy performances and quickly formed a promising understanding with Martyn Coleman.

Martyn Coleman - ST 'Colo' is one of the leagues most prolific marksmen, with a scoring touch second to none locally over the last decade.

Max Brown - ST Max is a recent addition to the squad following his release from Carlisle United but he's already proved what a great asset he will be to the team.

Club Hebburn was very different back in 1912. The collieries that had changed it from a small agricultural hamlet to a cosmopolitan but pretty grimy industrial town were nearing peak employment of 1,864 men, the shipyards launched by Andrew Leslie were in full vigour and the town, 11 years earlier, had welcome a diminutive Frenchman called Alphonse Reyrolle.

Reyrolle opened an engineering works, initially employing just 50 men, in the former dye factory next to St Aloysius’s church. At its peak Reyrolles would employ 12,000 men from a wide range of backgrounds, religions and cultures and export to 70 countries and be known worldwide.

The company also started a football team, encouraged by industrialist and mine owner Sir Ralph Carr-Ellison, another famous name in Hebburn history who provided the sports ground on which the Northern League side still plays. Football has played a major part in the life of the town, a cornerstone of its history.

Probably it also helped the population forget the harshness of day-to-day life, families of ten and more in insanitary, two-up two-down houses. When the last pit closed in 1931, it had claimed the lives of almost 200 men and boys.

There’d been plenty of teams before 1912, of course, notably Hebburn Argyle – kicked off in 1882 by Father Toner, the priest at St Aloysius’s. The town had so many Scots, they became known as the Tyneside Highlanders. Pre-World War 1 derbies with Jarrow would attract crowds of 8,000.The Geordie town also had Shinty and Curling Clubs and even an annual Highland Games, organised by the Hebburn Celtic Society.

Alphonse Reyrolle had actively encouraged his workers to take part in sport, including “barefoot” football, and formed the Employees’ Benevolent Association. The team formed in 1912, elected to the second division of the Jarrow and District Junior League, was suitably booted, however.

They progressed, flourished in the 1930s, had a wartime season in the North Eastern League, won the Durham Challenge Cup in 1943, and returned to the Northern Combination where they stayed until 1958. In 1959-60, Reyrolles had another season in the terminally ailing North Eastern League but finished bottom with just eight points.

The club then had 28 seasons in the Wearside League, and won the league in 1966 and the Monkwearmouth Cup in 1968.

In 1988, following the demise of the iconic engineering company A. Reyrolle, the name was changed to Hebburn and application made to join the Northern League – though it was before the days of automatic promotion and relegation and there wasn’t a vacancy. The ground was improved and other clubs canvassed. The break, however, came when North Shields created a vacancy by deciding by deciding to play elsewhere. The team played its first Northern League game on August 19 1989, winning 2-1 at Shotton Comrades, won promotion and the Durham Challenge Cup in 1992 but were relegated – contentiously – for failing to meet ground criteria. They won the Craven Cup in 1999-2000.

History In season 2011/12, Hebburn reached the FA Cup final qualifying round – a dream tie at neighbours Gateshead, from whom they were separated by 125 league places – and secured promotion in third place after a fascinating and exciting final ten games which took the team up to the first division In 2012/13 Hebburn Town met their target of staying in the first division after a nerve racking end to the season.

During the close season however manager Paul Bennett decided to leave the club for Jarrow Roofing along with his assistant Dean Nicholson. Unfortunately the team followed suit and in June the club had to start from scratch; two ex-Hebburn players Scott Oliver and Davy Bell took up the challenge and the new management team successfully assembled a squad of mainly young players with a base of experienced players to give the team a good mix.

Unfortunately, the very young and somewhat inexperienced side could not avoid relegation although they played with spirit, commitment and enthusiasm throughout the season. The team received many plaudits for their playing style and attitude and also achieved some notable results; although relegated the team got stronger as the season progressed.

The squad in 2017/2018 season had a magnificent run from Jan 2018 – May 2018 that saw the Hornets record just 2 losses in all competitions, this fine form secured promotion to the Ebac Northern League Division One by finishing in second place.

In their first season back in Division 1, Hebburn finished as runners up. Michael Richardson was the side’s top scorer with 25 goals, and then manager Scott Oliver took the side to the fifth round of the FA Vase.

The Vase run was remarkable as the home attendance record was broken twice. 1,302 people attended the game against City of Liverpool in the first round, and 1,310 people were at the game against West Auckland in the fifth round.

In the summer of 2019, manager Scott Oliver stepped down from his role and reserve team manager Kevin Bolam stepped up to the role. The new management team of Kevin Bolam and assistant Mick Mulhern had a promising first season in charge, with the team in the promotion hunt before the season was voided as well as reaching the final of the FA Vase which is still yet to be played.

Hebburn Town has now enjoyed 30 seasons and over 1,000 games in the Northern League. Hopefully, they will continue to build on their great legacy for another 1,000 games.

Tuesday 22 September Hebburn Town 2-1 Whickham AFC Hebburn Town made it four wins from four league games with a 2-1 home victory against Whickham AFC. Goals either side of the half made the difference for the home side.

Michael McKeown gave the Hornets a lead as the first half was coming to a close in the 44th minute.

Substitute Olly Martin doubled the lead in the 52nd minute but a setback came in the 73rd minute when Zak Atkinson pulled a goal back for the visitors.

But Hebburn managed to hold on to the three points to extend their lead at the top of the Northern League Division One table.

There was early danger for Hebburn inside the first 10 minutes when Jack Donaghy was pickpocketed by Atkinson in his defensive third who then forced a good save from Mark Foden.

Graeme Armstrong then had an excellent chance in the 22nd minute.

Three attackers combined when Amar Purewal played through Scott who squared to Armstrong who saw his close-range shot brilliantly cleared off the line.

A long distance strike from Tom Potter whistled narrowly wide of the far corner in the 41st minute.

Purewal then broke through a minute later, capitalising on a mistake to go through one-on-one but Regan Ward made an excellent save.

The breakthrough finally when McKeown won the ball in midfield and took a few strides forward before arrowing a strike into the right corner from 20 yards.

The second came within 10 minutes of the second half.

Purewal headed a ball onto Scott who laid the ball off for Martin to add a lovely finish into the right corner from just outside the box.

The Hornets saw further chances go begging, the best of which came for Scott who was one-on-one on the end of a long ball but saw his dinked finish land inches wide.

Having looked in command for so long, the three points were about to be thrown into doubt.

Jack Robson played a lovely through ball to debutant Atkinson who smashed a low finish past Foden.

The game became very end-to-end for the remainder, the visitors threatening to steal a point while Hebburn had chances to kill the game.

It took a great last-ditch tackle from Donaghy to stop a promising Whickham attack in the 78th minute.

At the other end, Martin saw his effort from around 8 yards out saved excellently again by Ward.

There was a sigh of relief when the referee blew to confirm another Hebburn win, but it should have come much more comfortable.

Wednesday 30 September North Shields 3-2 Hebburn Town

It was a bad pass from McKeown that provided an opening at the other end.

His backpass was cut out by Calum Smith who broke through on goal and brought a save from Foden, however the ball rebounded to Dan Wilson who made no mistake with his finish.

Wilson and Smith combined again minutes later for a great chance that should have extended the hosts' lead.

North Shields continued to dominate the chances, but Carl Taylor had Hebburn's first shot on target before the end of the half.

Hebburn were lucky to go into the half just a goal down, but will have felt while there was one goal in it they had a great chance if they could lift it.

However, they were dealt an early blow in the second half when Adam Forster received the ball from a short corner and floated in a cross which Gary Ormston was on the end of to add a flicked header over Foden.

And not long later, another floated ball from a short corner was headed in by North Shields, this time it was Cameron Cunningham getting the decisive flick.

Hebburn substitute Cedwyn Scott pulled a goal back when McKeown's through ball caused problems in the Shields defence and gave the attacker a simple finish.

And within five minutes, Scott pulled another back as Greg Purvis failed to deal properly with a shot, his save coming straight back out for Scott to fire home.

The goal provided some hope for Hebburn, but they could not find an equaliser. Scott came the closest with a shot on target deep into added time.

Hebburn Town took their first league defeat of the season with a very poor performance away to North Shields.

It was clear North Shields had the front foot from early on and David Robinson's improvised header almost caught out Mark Foden.

However, Hebburn had a brilliant chance when Michael McKeown played a great through ball to Carl Taylor who tried to square to Graeme Armstrong but the ball narrowly evaded the striker.

We put the spotlight on our next opponents. This week, the team in question is Bishop Auckland, who have recently appointed a new manager team following the exit of Ian Chandler.

Hebburn will follow up this afternoon's game with another home match in midweek against Bishop Auckland.

The County Durham side have made a bad start to the season, scoring just one point from their first five league games and going out of the FA Vase to Division Two side Billingham Synthonia.

Their best results so far have come in the FA Cup where they won against Hall Road Rangers and Kendal Town before losing to Stalybridge Celtic in the First Qualifying Round.

The bad start led to the exit of legendary Northern League manager Ian Chandler after just two years at the helm of The Two Blues.

It will be interesting to see whether there is a 'new manager bounce' following the appointment of ex-Bishop player Andy Toman into the top job.

Bishop were sitting in 11th when last season came to an early close, but were as high as third in the last completed season in 2018/19.

The Hornets did the double over Bishop last season, winning the away tie 2-1 before completing the double thanks to a Michael Richardson brace at home in December.

They have historically been one of the most successful sides in the Northern League and were once the top amateur side in England having won the FA Amateur Cup 10 times, however they have not won the league since 1986 and won their last silverware in 2013 with the Durham Challenge Cup. They have a mix of young players and plenty of Northern League experience with players like Callum Munro and Chris Winn.

Memory Match Penrith AFC 0-3 Hebburn Town Saturday 28th December 2019 We beat Penrith in our final game of 2019 during last season's voided campaign.

We travelled to Penrith looking to string some momentum back together, on the back of two wins after some indifferent results beforehand.

Hebburn took the lead in the 31st minute when Taylor got his foot on the end of a good cross from Michael Richardson beating the goalkeeper.

In the 56th minute, Hebburn doubled their lead when Armstrong headed home on the end of a good corner from Richardson.

Two minutes later, Armstrong added his second of the game when Potter made a good run on the right and the veteran forward headed home at the far post on the end of an impressive cross.

We also beat Penrith by the same scoreline in the home fixture in early August thanks to goals from Graeme Armstrong, Michael Richardson and Robbie Spence.

That means we did the double over Penrith last season with an aggregate score of 6-0.

Editor’s Notes Hello and welcome everybody to the Green Energy Stadium for today's game with Penrith AFC. We would also like to extend a warm welcome to everyone associated with Penrith AFC. It was disappointing to see the team fall well below their usual standards in taking their first league defeat of the season against North Shields.

I'm sure it was a very entertaining game for the neutral, seeing two of the top sides in the league go face-to-face in a five goal thriller. A fightback from three goals down to ensure the game hung in the balance until the final whistle.

However, despite the fightback, the performance simply was not good enough by their standards.

From the start, they were struggling to string the passes together that they usually do and had to resort to going long, and inevitably losing possession, more often.

I don't think there can be arguments with the result.

It's now time to move on. Having seen how the players and staff have reacted to the defeat, it is clear that it has got to them and I know they will react.

As Darren Lough said in my interview with him. It's a very long season and we are early into it.

We have another fixture against North Shields at home later in the season and there are many other teams that can drag themselves into the picture. So it is important not to read too much into that result.

So as we move on, we now face Penrith at home.

Since I started working in the Northern League, I've always known Penrith as a struggling side.

They've avoided relegations through league restructures and teams folding. However, last season they improved a lot and had started to pick up results under Andy Coyles. They were still sat in 19th, but form was picking up.

It appears that Andy Coyles has brought in extra help with a new joint manager.

They sit in 18th having won one of their first five league games and have made it to the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Vase.

I'm sure Kevin, Mick and the lads are not underestimating the task and are expecting another tough game.

From a personal note, I'm sad to be missing my first competitive game this season which means no match highlights sadly.

After managing to avoid this virus since the pandemic reached the UK, it has finally found its way into my house meaning we are now self-isolating.

It comes as a blow as I was really enjoying being back in the swing of things, attending live football and working.

It's what I spend my week looking forward to.

As it stands, I believe my isolation period ends on the day we face Stockton Town at home. Until then, I'll be following as closely as I can.
