Hello everybody and welcome along for this afternoon's game against an in form Newcastle Benfield team.

I'd like to extend a warm welcome to Benfield fans, players and backroom staff to the Green Energy Stadium for what should be a match full of quality.

Our midweek result was emphatic and we played some excellent football to be honest.

We have some tough fixtures coming up but thankfully the injury / Covid list is improving and that’s vital moving into the next group of competitive games.

It will be another tough test against a team who gave us some tough games last season. In fact they beat us here in the Northern League Cup, so we owe them one for that.

Hopefully we can keep picking up the points on a regular basis.

They will be coming here full of confidence on the back of four consecutive victories and sitting 2nd in the league. So we will have to make sure we're at our best today.

Last week saw us beat Sunderland RCA 3-2 at home, a team that today's opponents recently beat 4-1.

To be fair I think it was more comfortable than the result suggested and it was a very disciplined performance against a tough team. Ultimately, we found a way to win.

Memory Match Newcastle Benfield 1-3 Hebburn Town Saturday 21st December 2019 FA Vase The Hornets faced Newcastle Benfield away from home in the league of December last year and ran out 3-1 winners after heading into half-time 3-0 up.

Olly Martin (Pictured here by Sean Harrison) got the scoring underway within 10 minutes when he headed home a corner.

Robbie Spence doubled Hebburn's lead with a good finish in the 42nd minute and Hebburn hit Benfield with a sucker punch to give them a mountain to climb in the second half.

On the stroke of half-time a good corner from Michael Richardson was met by the head of Storey and the captain scored with a fine looping header.

Benfield got just what they needed towards the start of the second half, a goal to drag them back into the game.

Cyril Giraud with a brilliant curling effort in the 50th minute cut the deficit to 3-1.

However, it didn't prove a way back into the game, and Hebburn saw out the win in a competitive second half.

But Benfield did have joy against Hebburn last season, Stuart Elliott's men running out 2-0 winners in Hebburn to knock us out of the League Cup on our own turf.

Hebburn Town FC to help Holiday Hunger Campaign over October half-term Hebburn Town FC, in association with our local town foodbank Hebburn Helps, will be supporting the #holidayhungercampaign over the October Half-Term by producing up to 200 packed lunches every day for families to come and collect FREE OF CHARGE. Inspired by the work our local crisis foodbank Hebburn Helps undertakes on a regular basis and the fantastic campaign Manchester United star Marcus Rashford has led over the past few months highlighting food poverty, the football club want to support our own local community where we can. We are fully behind the need to ensure children and families can have fundamental provisions such as food.

In a time where money isn’t great for businesses and individuals alike, the most important thing is ensuring those who need the support locally get at least a meal/food daily. Having listened to Angie & Jo at Hebburn Helps and heard about the poverty & the pain they see on a daily basis along with some of the national stories we have seen in the press, the football club understandably wanted to help where we can and the October Campaign is the most appropriate support at this time.

Unfortunately, if our national politicians can’t agree to support those people who need it most, then organisations like ourselves who are the pillars of local communities will do our upmost to do so.

Director of Football at Hebburn Town, Stephen Rutherford, said “This year has been very difficult for many people for many reasons, our club have a great relationship with Angie, Jo and the team at Hebburn Helps, they do a fantastic job 365 days of the year.

We’ve looked very close to home as a football club, we have over 500 junior members, no doubt some of these will be on the poverty line, we always help the local community where we can, so this October Holiday Campaign is the club giving something back. We hope it helps in some small way all those families that require the support.

Angie has assured me the numbers of packed lunches we are offering daily will mean there’ll be plenty to go around every day so we encourage people to come along and take a packed lunch, no questions asked.

I’d like to offer my personal thanks to the club's board/owners and junior club committee who all agreed with the campaign and the staff who will be supporting on a daily basis” Each day next week (Monday 26th - Friday 30th), the football club will have up to 200 packed lunches available for collection at its “Hungry Hornet Cafe” area at Hebburn Sports Ground, they can be collected between 12pm2pm.

A member of staff will be on hand to help, there’s no need to Pre-Book or message us, just come along and collect.

Each packed lunch will consist of: Choice of sandwich (Ham or cheese) A bag of crisps Fruit Cake/Biscuit bar Carton of Juice/Bottle of water #stopthehunger

Newcastle Benfield Formed as Brunswick Village in 1988 as part of the Northern Alliance League division two they moved to division one the following season. When the club moved to their current ground and changed their name to Benfield Park.

By the time the 2003-04 season started they had again changed their name to Newcastle Benfield Saints and joined division two of the Northern League, and gaining promotion to division one by the following season.

For the 2005-06 season the name changed to Newcastle Benfield Bay Plastic the following season Newcastle Benfield BP and finally settling as plain Newcastle Benfield for the 2008-09 season.

Since joining the first division in that 2004-05 season they have had an unbroken tenure of that division.

In September 2005 former Hartlepool Striker Paul Baker took over as manager and was still at the helm when the club lifted their first Northern League honour, the League Cup, in May 2007, having beaten Nissan 1-0 at federation Park Dunston, courtesy of a magnificent Alu Bangura goal.

Baker enjoyed particular success in FA competitions leading the club to their best performance in the FA Vase in 2006 and a year later reaching the Fourth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, narrowly loosing to York City 1-0 in front of a ground record crowd of 927 fans.

The club’s finest season was yet to come when in 2008-09 under Tom Wade too win the league title on the last day of the season with an eighty-eighth minute goal by Stephen Young in the final game at Penrith. It is notable that they had never been at the top of the table till that goal.

That was turned into a double success when they were to win the League Cup, ironically also against Penrith with a breath-taking Ian Graham goal however many would agree that Andrew Grainger’s performance in goal was probably the finest individual performance.

Wade left before the following season with Baker returning and Benfield winning the Cleator Cup, the Northern League equivalent to the Charity Shield.

In September 2011 Baker resigned for a second time, replaced by former player, captain and assistant manager Alu Bangura. The same player who scored the magnificent goal against Nissan in 2007.

Alu’s time was short lived replaced by Perry Briggs after 6 months and the club limped to a disappointing league finish in twelfth place.

Briggs was to leave in the autumn of 2012 replaced by Anthony Woodhouse and he was to bail out early 2013 citing work pressures. Woodhouse was replaced by former Bedlington Terriers player Steve Bowey who performed the role as player manager.

For the 2013-14 season Bowey’s side put in some impressive performances but still ended up Best FA Vase only fourteenth in the table, but this was balanced by some fine results in the FA Vase.

Performance Quarter Final (2013–14) Tragically, club co-founder Danny Gates passed away November 2013 his contribution cannot be underestimated he will not be forgotten as long as the club exists.

Club History At the end of that season Steve Bowey resigned and Neil Saxton took his place who in turn left in October to be replaced by the returning Steve Bowey, with the club languishing near the foot of the table. His return galvanized the club and a run of fourteen games including eleven wins and one draw saw them finish the season in tenth place. This also saw Paul Brayson win Northern League Player of the Season with a tally of 49 goals in all competitions.

The following season2015-16 saw Benfield finish eighteenth and Bowey tender his resignation again at the end of October.

Sadly, John Colley who was the co-founder along with Danny Gates also passed away December 17 aged 74 for many years John was the club Treasurer, and will also be missed.

The club then appointed Mark Convery and Paul Brayson as joint Player Managers in November 2015 and with a thin squad they stabilised in the 2016-17 season ending a credible tenth in the league.

The 20117-18 season saw Benfield finish seventh only denied sixth on a one goal spot by Stockton Town. Including a forty-nine-goal contribution by Paul Brayson.

2018-19 after a slow start to the season saw Mark Convery and his assistant Craig “Bruiser� Heward leave the club at the start of October, with Tom Wade returning after a nine-year absence however this only lasted four months, with former Newcastle United and Benfield player Stuart Elliott take the reigns. Stu took the Lions to the Northern League Brookes Mileson Trophy final only to lose 4-3 on penalties.

Stuart has however pledged his future to the club this gives the team and its supporters hope for the 2019-20 season.

Tragically, club founder and chairman Jimmy Rowe passed away September 4th 2019. Everything the club has achieved so far is down to Jimmy and everything we achieve in the future will be dedicated to his memory.

Dave Robson has stepped up and to take on that role as Club Chairman.

Current Covid-19 Procedure: 1. Upon Entry to the ground all spectators must check in using the government NHS track & trace QR code, failure to use the code due to not having the appropriate device will require a manual name and contact number record being taken.

2. All spectators must wear face coverings/ masks at all times unless medially exempt.

We have been handed a home draw in the next round of the Durham Challenge Cup. Hebburn Town will face Gateshead-based side Rutherford AFC in the week commencing 21st December with the actual date yet to be arranged.

In the last completed campaign, 2018/19, they finished 4th.

Hebburn made it to this round with a 10-2 away victory over Northern League Division Two Washington.

Rutherford play in the Premier Division of the Northern Alliance.

Cedwyn creates club history Cedwyn Scott's six goals against Washington AFC is a tally that equals the club record of goals scored in a game by an individual player, the last player to do so for Hebburn being Alex Benjamin against Darlington Railway Athletic.

Interestingly, Alex Benjamin's haul on the 4th April 2012 also came on away turf on a Wednesday evening.

3. Spectators must socially distance at all times, this means remaining a 2m distance from others outside of your support bubble.

4. Outside Beer Garden areas - spectators can sit in groups of 6 (from any setting) and must remain seated to order & consume drinks (at table service only) 5. Inside Sports Club areas - Spectators can sit in groups of 6 (Only from within your household bubble) and must remain seated to order & consume drinks (at table service only) 6. Inside Sports Club areas - Face coverings must be worn at all times whilst moving around on foot (i.e going to toilet, entry/exit the building) 7. All local authority COVID measures must be followed at all times.

Scott's six is the first time a Hebburn player has achieved that tally at Northern League level, therefore goes down as a little bit of Hebburn Town history for the young attacker.

Club Hebburn was very different back in 1912. The collieries that had changed it from a small agricultural hamlet to a cosmopolitan but pretty grimy industrial town were nearing peak employment of 1,864 men, the shipyards launched by Andrew Leslie were in full vigour and the town, 11 years earlier, had welcome a diminutive Frenchman called Alphonse Reyrolle.

Reyrolle opened an engineering works, initially employing just 50 men, in the former dye factory next to St Aloysius’s church. At its peak Reyrolles would employ 12,000 men from a wide range of backgrounds, religions and cultures and export to 70 countries and be known worldwide.

The company also started a football team, encouraged by industrialist and mine owner Sir Ralph Carr-Ellison, another famous name in Hebburn history who provided the sports ground on which the Northern League side still plays. Football has played a major part in the life of the town, a cornerstone of its history.

Probably it also helped the population forget the harshness of day-to-day life, families of ten and more in insanitary, two-up two-down houses. When the last pit closed in 1931, it had claimed the lives of almost 200 men and boys.

There’d been plenty of teams before 1912, of course, notably Hebburn Argyle – kicked off in 1882 by Father Toner, the priest at St Aloysius’s. The town had so many Scots, they became known as the Tyneside Highlanders. Pre-World War 1 derbies with Jarrow would attract crowds of 8,000.The Geordie town also had Shinty and Curling Clubs and even an annual Highland Games, organised by the Hebburn Celtic Society.

Alphonse Reyrolle had actively encouraged his workers to take part in sport, including “barefoot” football, and formed the Employees’ Benevolent Association. The team formed in 1912, elected to the second division of the Jarrow and District Junior League, was suitably booted, however.

They progressed, flourished in the 1930s, had a wartime season in the North Eastern League, won the Durham Challenge Cup in 1943, and returned to the Northern Combination where they stayed until 1958. In 1959-60, Reyrolles had another season in the terminally ailing North Eastern League but finished bottom with just eight points.

The club then had 28 seasons in the Wearside League, and won the league in 1966 and the Monkwearmouth Cup in 1968.

In 1988, following the demise of the iconic engineering company A. Reyrolle, the name was changed to Hebburn and application made to join the Northern League – though it was before the days of automatic promotion and relegation and there wasn’t a vacancy. The ground was improved and other clubs canvassed. The break, however, came when North Shields created a vacancy by deciding by deciding to play elsewhere. The team played its first Northern League game on August 19 1989, winning 2-1 at Shotton Comrades, won promotion and the Durham Challenge Cup in 1992 but were relegated – contentiously – for failing to meet ground criteria. They won the Craven Cup in 1999-2000.

History In season 2011/12, Hebburn reached the FA Cup final qualifying round – a dream tie at neighbours Gateshead, from whom they were separated by 125 league places – and secured promotion in third place after a fascinating and exciting final ten games which took the team up to the first division In 2012/13 Hebburn Town met their target of staying in the first division after a nerve racking end to the season.

During the close season however manager Paul Bennett decided to leave the club for Jarrow Roofing along with his assistant Dean Nicholson. Unfortunately the team followed suit and in June the club had to start from scratch; two ex-Hebburn players Scott Oliver and Davy Bell took up the challenge and the new management team successfully assembled a squad of mainly young players with a base of experienced players to give the team a good mix.

Unfortunately, the very young and somewhat inexperienced side could not avoid relegation although they played with spirit, commitment and enthusiasm throughout the season. The team received many plaudits for their playing style and attitude and also achieved some notable results; although relegated the team got stronger as the season progressed.

The squad in 2017/2018 season had a magnificent run from Jan 2018 – May 2018 that saw the Hornets record just 2 losses in all competitions, this fine form secured promotion to the Ebac Northern League Division One by finishing in second place.

In their first season back in Division 1, Hebburn finished as runners up. Michael Richardson was the side’s top scorer with 25 goals, and then manager Scott Oliver took the side to the fifth round of the FA Vase.

The Vase run was remarkable as the home attendance record was broken twice. 1,302 people attended the game against City of Liverpool in the first round, and 1,310 people were at the game against West Auckland in the fifth round.

In the summer of 2019, manager Scott Oliver stepped down from his role and reserve team manager Kevin Bolam stepped up to the role. The new management team of Kevin Bolam and assistant Mick Mulhern had a promising first season in charge, with the team in the promotion hunt before the season was voided as well as reaching the final of the FA Vase which is still yet to be played.

Hebburn Town has now enjoyed 30 seasons and over 1,000 games in the Northern League. Hopefully, they will continue to build on their great legacy for another 1,000 games.

Saturday 17th October Hebburn Town 3-2 Sunderland RCA

By Jonny O'Gorman Man of the Match, Cedwyn Scott was the hero today with his second half brace helping Hebburn Town come from behind to defeat Sunderland RCA 3-2, in a breath taking second half of football.

Both sides had strong chances to take the lead in a fairly even first half contest. RCA were unlucky not to score after centre forward Mark Davison failed to connect to a good ball played in from the left by Jonathan Carr. While Hebburn forced RCA keeper Robert Dean into two good saves to keep the score line goalless at half time.

After a goalless first half, in which Hebburn dominated, it was the second half in which the game sparked into life much to the delight of the 150 fans at the ground.

RCA took the lead after the hour, with Town Keeper Mark Foden only able to push a Stephen Callen shot into the path of Jonathan Carr who bundled home the opener for the away side.

Despite the setback, Town's heads did not drop, and RCA’s lead did not last long either. Cedwyn Scott replied almost instantly for Town following a fine through ball in by substitute Michael Richardson, with Scott deftly finishing into the bottom corner.

Scott’s second then came less than 5 minutes after the equaliser, with Scott firing home a ferocious shot into the back of the net after another fine through ball played in, this time from captain Louis Storey. Town’s third came from Richardson, who went from provider to finisher, producing a lovely piece of play to flick the ball past the defence before producing a calm finish into the corner.

RCA provided Town with a late scare with Foden bringing down RCA substitute Ryan Leonard in the 90 th minute, with referee David Pill awarding a penalty. Sunderland RCA, number 8, Dylan Elliot then stepped up to make the score 3-2.

Despite the late penalty, Hebburn were able to hold on and claim all three points to continue their strong start to the season.

Wednesday 21st October Washington FC 2-10 Hebburn Town

And Hebburn were three up when Scott played a wonderful through ball to Michael Richardson who, making his first start of the season, rounded the 'keeper and finished coolly. the game was out of sight when Scott was brought down and the referee pointed straight to the spot. Scott took the spotkick himself and fired down the middle and low into the net.

Scott completed his hat-trick less than 10 minutes into the second half when he stepped inside his man and smashed low into the bottom corner.

Washy’s Alex Dobinson attempted a short backpass was intercepted by Scott who nipped around Lowerson to tap home his 4th.

Purewal got his brace after missing a good chance by finishing Scott’s backheel with a low, firm strike from close range.

Dom Moan then smashed a consolation home for Washy as his free-kick flew into the bottom corner to make it 2-7.

With 7 minutes to play, Potter got to the byline and crossed for substitute Lee Mason to finish from close range then a ball across goal almost resulted in an own goal but Scott managed the final touch to make it 9.

With just 3 minutes left Scott then completed his double hattrick with a good low finish into the bottom corner to send Hebburn into double figures.

Cedwyn Scott was the hero again with his record-equalling six goal haul helping Hebburn Town to a 10-2 victory away to Washington AFC in the Durham Challenge Cup. The attacker also helped himself to a couple of assists as Hebburn ran riot in Sunderland.

Brad Chisholm opened the scoring for Washington just after the quarter hour with a shot from distance which sneaked under Andrew Coulson.

But Scott levelled just minutes later after he got down the right and tried to square the ball. It deflected back to him off a defender and this time he decided to go alone with a good finish.

Hebburn were ahead in the 25th minute when Tom Potter crossed to Purewal and he turned and shot to give the visitors the lead despite Lowerson getting a good hand to it.

We put the spotlight on our next Northern League opponents. Following our game against Newcastle Benfield this afternoon, we make the journey up to Ashington to play the Colliers.

We are back in midweek action in the Northern League on Tuesday night when we make the trip up to Ashington.

Ashington currently sit 8th in Division One of the Northern League, having started their campaign with five wins, three defeats and one draw.

They are currently on a long run of eight games unbeaten in all competitions, and five games unbeaten in the league, their last defeat coming against Thornaby at home in the Northern League.

They have made a great start to their FA Vase campaign as well, making it to the First Round Proper after qualifying victories over Ryton & Crawcook Albion and Nelson.

They play at home against Consett this afternoon, so it will be interesting to see if they can keep their unbeaten streak going against another top side.

Next weekend, following our game with the Colliers, they face Charnock Richard in the Vase, so maybe there is a danger of them looking ahead towards such an important game.

Bolstered by their strong start to the season, they have also added signings recently to what was already a strong side.

A very familiar face will be Luke Salmon who started the season with the Hornets but made the move to Ashington in search of game time.

They also recently added Northern League legend Paul Robinson from North Shields, and another former Hebburn player in Liam Gillesphey.

We found joy against Ashington last season, starting our league campaign against them with a 5-1 home win thanks to a Graeme Armstrong four goal haul with Luke Sullivan also getting on the scoresheet.

We then faced them away in January 2020, a Tom Potter double and a goal from Olly Martin sealing a 3-0 victory on the road.

U18s record-breaking youth Cup run comes to an end

Ball completed his hat-trick with a powerful penalty into the right corner which left no chance for Ciaran Churchill who dived the right way.

And the Coasters made it eight in the 90th minute after a well worked free kick routine which provided Cliffe a chance to shoot from inside the box who made no mistake with his finish.

Editor’s Notes Hello and welcome to the Green Energy Stadium for what should be another tough home fixture against Newcastle Benfield.

I would also like to extend a warm welcome to everybody connected with Newcastle Benfield who is in attendance today.

I never thought I would have to be political in the programme notes for a non-league football team, but I also don't see the issue of kids going hungry as a political issue and more an issue of basic human rights.

So let's talk some football, and hwat a game it should be today.

I used to think of Newcastle Benfield as an eternal mid-table side, but they are threatening to be so much more under Stuart Elliott this season.

They sit just behind us in second place in the league and will be absolutely full of confidence.

The way the club has rallied to help its community and launched a great initiative to make sure children are fed over October half term fills me with pride.

It seems they have steadily improved since Stuart Elliott came in, not just in results but also in the way they play.

I was disgusted that the government voted against providing free school meals over the October half term. If on the issue of whether children should starve you're on the side of child starvation, I believe you must be morally bankrupt.

Another impressive aspect of Benfield is that they are a young side, even though people's minds go straight to veteran Paul Brayson when they think of Benfield.

It shouldn't take football clubs, local takeaways and food banks to have to act on this issue, but thank god for the great people in the community and across the UK that they have chosen to.

I genuinely believe that being a club that acts the right way off the pitch helps breed success on it. It makes it a club that people want to be involved with and represent. I am incredibly proud to be a part of Hebburn Town FC

They have a lot of players around the 20-year-old mark and they will only get better and better.

We saw what they are capable of when they knocked us out of the League Cup here on our home turf last season, and they have only improved since then.

Luckily, I believe we have improved a lot since then as well.

Our good performances are greater and we are winning game from our poorer performances.

It feels like a huge game for both sides' momentum and a result would be incredibly important before we head into another busy week with a game away at in-form Ashington on Tuesday.
