Issue Number 9, w/c 2nd September 2013 - w/c 16th September 2013 Form I & II Bushcraft Trip Girls from Forms I and II started the Michaelmas Term with a three day camping trip in the Oxfordshire woods with the Bushcraft Company. The girls had to form their own ‘tribes’, create a history, design a flag, choreograph a tribal dance and tribal face markings for their groups. They quickly bonded in their tribes, learning how to work together as a team to make their own shelters, fires and food. The weather was pretty miserable but the girls persevered through the rain and mud! Highlights included swimming in the lake and toasting marshmallows by the fire. There were no showers on camp and the girls had to brush their teeth with water from a jerry can! Well done to all the girls for challenging themselves on this trip. Miss Kay and I are proud of you! Congratulations to Rose Hugh Smith

Birthday Posies

Rose Hugh Smith (Form IV) rode as part of the GB Pony Team at the European Pony Championships in Arezzo, Italy in July where they won a bronze medal. This was the first time in six years that the dressage team have received a medal and Rose with her horse ‘Holsteins Derwisch’ achieved a solid score which helped the team to reach medal position. The whole school is very proud of Rose’s success this summer and we send her our warmest congratulations on this outstanding achievement.

After a nine year absence, one of the great Heathfield traditions is back – the Birthday Posies. In days gone by, the Headmistress would present each girl with a posy, handpicked by the Head Girl from the grounds or floral displays from the school. The ‘Birthday Girl’ would receive her posy during lunch in the presence of the entire school and the birthday prayer would then be recited. With the refurbishment of the dining room it made sense to move the birthday prayer and blessings to the Chapel, but in the move the posies were somehow lost, although not forgotten. However, the beginning of this term saw the reintroduction of this much missed tradition. From now on every Wednesday during morning Chapel, girls who have a birthday that week will receive a blessing, a posy of flowers and the school will pray for them using the birthday prayer. An enormous thank you to Liz Pointon (Head of Boarding) who kindly arranges all the posies with the greatest care and attention.
