INTRODUCTION Being able to pick up whether or not your client has an Laser contraindication or determine whether there is a precaution that you should be aware of is only one crucial step in an effective consultation.

The next is understanding why a particular condition impacts your ability to safely perform a treatment and then explaining this reasoning to your client effectively.

CONTRAINDICATIONS There are some contraindications to consider when determining if the client is appropriate for treatment.

MEDICAL Pregnancy or trying to become pregnant or breastfeeding.

Cancer or Chemotherapy or Radiotherapy.

Diabetes Type 1 & 2 Autoimmune disorders.

Increased bleeding tendency or wound healing disorders (eg. atherosclerosis, haemophilia, etc).

Immuno-compromised patients (e.g. HIV, AIDS) Renal Failure.

Multiple Sclerosis.

History of Seizures or Epilepsy.

Surgical or Metal Pins.

Active Herpes (HSV1, HSV2, Herpes Zoster/ Shingles) in treatment area.

Vitiligo.

Inflammatory disorders: Eczema or Psoraisis

User of Retin-A or Tretinoin in the treatment area in the last 2 weeks.

Photosensitising Medication or St Johns Wort.

Fish oil/EFA’s (for medical purposes only).

Blood thinners/Aspirin.

PRECAUTIONS There are some precautions to consider when determining if the client is appropriate for treatment.

Skin Types IV & V. Feeling unwell, flu, common cold etc.

Smoking / Drinking / Drugs.

Waxing, Plucking, Electrolysis, Laser (hair reduction or skin treatment) (within 4 weeks).

Laser or IPL Hair Reduction in the treatment area within last 4 weeks Microneedling or Laser/IPL Skin Correction (in the last two to six weeks) Hormonal Imbalance.

Clients prone to HSV1, HSV2, Herpes Zoster/ Shingles (without an active infection).

Cosmeceutical Vitamin A, Vitamin C, AHA’s & BHA’s, or (within the past 3 days).

Fillers (within the past 4 weeks).

Anti-wrinkle injections (Botox / Dysport) (within the past 2 weeks).

Chemical Peel, Micro/Hydrodermabrasion and Microblading (in the last two weeks) Laser Resurfacing /Cosmetic Surgery (within 3-6 mths).

Allergies to Latex.

Older/Inactive clients.

Pregnancy, trying to become pregnant or breastfeeding:

Why is it contraindicated?

No clinical studies have confirmed treatment safety for both the mother and foetus or baby. Therefore the treatment must not be performed on pregnant or breastfeeding mothers as the potential risks are unknown.

Can we proceed with treatment?

No.

CONTRAINDICATIONS Cancer, Chemotherapy or Radiotherapy within 2 years: What is it?

Cancer is a mutation or abnormality to cells and can cover a broad range of areas on the body and present in many different forms. Chemotherapy or Radiotherapy is the use of anti-cancer drugs and or radiation to target and destroy cancer cells that can be used to remove or manage a wide range of cancers.

Why is it contraindicated?

As the cells have mutated and are replicating abnormally, the stimulation of new cell production must be avoided, therefore making cancer a contraindication to treatment.

Healing will also be impacted, and there is, therefore, a higher risk of infection. Anti-cancer drugs and radiation cause significant stress on the body, resulting in an extreme increase in skin sensitivity and heat sensitivity. The patient will be immunocompromised and experience other strains and stress on the body organs.

Can we proceed with treatment?

No. Wait two years and consider obtaining a letter of clearance to begin treatments from their managing oncologist.

Diabetes Type I & 2:

What is it?

Diabetes Type I is a chronic condition caused by cells in the pancreas destroying insulin. Insulin allows the glucose to pass from your blood into your body’s cells for energy.

Type 2 diabetes is a condition in which the body becomes resistant to the normal effects of insulin and/or gradually loses the capacity to produce enough insulin in the pancreas.

Why is it contraindicated?

Diabetes Type I can cause too much glucose to circulate in the blood, leading to both short-term and long-term problems. People with diabetes can have poor circulation and an impaired immune system, delaying healing capability. Much like Type 1, those with Type 2 Diabetes can have poor circulation and their healing capabilities can be delayed.

Can we proceed with treatment?

No.

Autoimmune disorders (Vitiligo, Hashimoto’s disease, Rheumatoid arthritis): What is it?

An autoimmune disorder is a condition that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks parts of the body, such as the joints, organs, or skin. The immune system release proteins called autoantibodies that attack healthy cells.

Why is it contraindicated?

Most autoimmune disorders are contraindicated because of their effects on the skin, resulting from compromised cell function and poor wound healing, resulting in an increased risk of infection from the inflammation created during treatment.

Can we proceed with treatment?

As autoimmune conditions vary greatly in severity, it is recommended to seek medical approval.

Increased bleeding tendency, peripheral vascular, bleeding or wound healing disorders (e.g. atherosclerosis, haemophilia, etc):

Why is it contraindicated?

As the device causes controlled injury to the client, triggering a wound healing response, adverse reactions on these clients can include excessive bleeding and prolonged or abnormal wound healing with an increased risk of infection. Patients with these conditions also tend to have an increased risk of bruising. Alongside the health concern, some medications associated with these conditions are also contraindicated.

Can we proceed with treatment?

No.

Immunosuppression (e.g.: HIV/Aids): What is it?

Immunosuppression is when the body’s immune system is not functioning normally. Immunosuppression can be caused by certain diseases, medications or medical treatments.

Why is it contraindicated?

Immunosuppression effects on the skin and body include compromised cell function and increased risk of poor wound healing and infection. Treatment may further compromise the client’s immune system.

Can we proceed with treatment?

No.

Renal Failure:

What is it?

Renal failure (kidney failure) is when the kidneys are no longer able to function properly to effectively remove waste products in the blood.

Why is it contraindicated?

Kidney failure can compromise the body's ability to heal effectively. The client may suffer from other symptoms that may impact their overall health and require contraindicated medications.

Can we proceed with treatment?

No.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS): What is it?

In MS nerve damage disrupts communication between the brain and the body. Multiple sclerosis causes many different symptoms, including vision loss, pain, fatigue and impaired coordination. The symptoms, severity and duration can vary from person to person.

Why is it contraindicated?

MS can have an impact on the client's ability to feel the sensation of the treatment. We require the client to be able to perceive heat on the surface of the skin as this can indicate whether the client is having an abnormal reaction to the treatment.

Can we proceed with treatment?

No.

History of Seizures or Epilepsy: What is it?

Epilepsy is a central nervous system (neurological) disorder in which brain activity becomes abnormal, causing seizures or periods of unusual behaviour, sensations, and sometimes loss of awareness. Seizures can be triggered by a wide range of factors, including flashing bright lights or patterns and stress.

Why is it contraindicated?

As we are utilising Laser that emits light, this would not be a suitable treatment for those with epilepsy as it could trigger a seizure. Any discomfort experienced during treatment could also be a stressor for the client, again risking the onset of a seizure.

Can we proceed with treatment?

No.

10 Metal Plates or Pins

Why is it contraindicated?

We would not treat over an area with metal pins or plates, as the energy delivered by Laser, could result in an undesirable amount of energy being absorbed causing discomfort for the client.

Can we proceed with treatment?

Treatment may proceed if the client has surgical metal pins or plates elsewhere on the body (not in the treatment site).

CONTRAINDICATIONS Active Herpes (HSV 1, HSV 2, Herpes Zoster/Shingles) in Treatment Area: What is it?

Herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2 are two members of the human Herpesviridae family. Both HSV-1 (which produces most cold sores) and HSV-2 (which produces most genital herpes) are common and contagious. Herpes Zoster / Shingles is a reactivation of the chickenpox virus in the body, causing a painful rash.

Why is it contraindicated?

Clients with active infections have an impaired immune system while fighting the condition and are therefore unsuitable for treatment. They also risk spreading the condition to the clinician and/or other clients.

Can we proceed with treatment?

Do not treat until the infection/virus has cleared. If the client is prone to cold sores and is undergoing treatment on the face, they should speak to their doctor/pharmacist about a prophylactic course of antivirals to prevent an outbreak.

12 Vitiligo: What is it?

Vitiligo is a common depigmenting skin disorder which results in a loss of functional melanocytes. Genetic studies have shown to be associated with other autoimmune diseases. The disease is characterized by typical nonscaly, chalkywhite macules and in some cases, whitening of the hair. There are two main types: generalised vitiligo, the common symmetrical form, and segmental affecting only one side of the body.

In recent years, considerable progress has been made in our understanding of the pathogenesis of vitiligo which is now clearly classified as an autoimmune disease. There is a range of treatments and medications currently used to treat Vitiligo and including topical therapies such as steroids, oral therapies and light therapies. Several diseases can be mistaken for vitiligo, including Tinea versicolor, piebaldism, idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis, and progressive macular hypomelanosis.

Why is it contraindicated?

Due to the inconsistency of melanin distribution, it makes the treatment outcome unpredictable and increases the risk of adverse reactions. As this is an autoimmune condition and one that is often found to be combined with other autoimmune conditions with little information known results and risk of undergoing treatment is unpredictable.

Can we proceed with treatment?

No.

Inflammatory disorders: Eczema or psoriasis in the treatment area: What is it?

Psoriasis Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition, usually presenting with symmetrically distributed, red, scaly plaques with well-defined edges. The scale is typically silvery white, except in skin folds where the plaques often appear shiny with a moist peeling surface. The most common sites are the scalp, elbows, and knees, but any part of the skin can be involved. The plaques are usually very persistent without treatment. Mild psoriasis is generally treated with topical agents alone.

Eczema Eczema (also known as atopic dermatitis) is a chronic health condition that affects the skin, causing redness, dryness, itching and sometimes infections. When eczema worsens, it is called an eczema flare. These can be triggered by a range of irritants or for no apparent reason. A family history of allergy increases the tendency to develop eczema. Eczema is managed by protecting the skin every day (moisturisers), avoiding known triggers and irritants, use of ointments and steroid creams, controlling itch (moisturisers and cold compresses), and preventing and treating infection (antibiotics).

Why is it contraindicated?

Both Psoriasis and Eczema are inflammatory and chronic skin irritations whereby the skin barrier is impaired and not functioning normally. Treating the skin whilst one of these conditions is present could further aggravate and flare up these conditions and add to potential adverse reactions such as infection, impaired healing, infection and pigmentation changes. Only treat clients who have a healthy, unimpaired barrier and intact skin in the area to be treated.

Can we proceed with treatment?

No.It is advised to not treat until the skin barrier is intact and completely healed.

Heart disease/cardiovascular conditions

What is it?

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is an umbrella term for conditions that affect the heart or blood vessels. It includes high blood pressure, stroke, and vascular dementia. Coronary heart disease is a type of heart disease that narrows or blocks blood vessels. Atherosclerosis is the main underlying cause of CVD. It is a disease in which plaques consisting of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances build up in the walls of arteries. Over time, the plaques harden, narrowing the opening of the arteries and restricting blood flow. Atherosclerosis can occur in arteries anywhere in the body but is most serious when it occurs in an artery, leading to important organs like the heart and brain. Arrhythmia is a type of heart condition where the heart rhythm is not steady. Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia.

Why is it contraindicated?

Depending on what the cardiac condition is will determine why it is contraindicated. In most cases it’s not the condition itself but the medication that is used to manage the condition that is contraindicated.

Can we proceed with treatment?

No.First, seek medical advice before you proceed.

15 History of Keloid Scarring: What is it?

Keloids are large, thickened scars that project outward from the skin and extend beyond the boundaries of the initial injury because of an overproduction of collagen. They are smooth-surfaced and firm and may be pink, red, brown or skincoloured. Various contributing factors can lead to the formation of keloid scars, such as genetics, ethnicity, age, injury location, and type.

Why is it a contraindication?

Factors that may increase the risk of keloid formation after Laser include having a genetic predisposition to keloids, having a previous history of keloids or hypertrophic scars, having an active infection or inflammation in the treated area, having excessive sun exposure or trauma to the treated area,having poor wound healing or scar management Therefore, it is advisable to avoid Laser treatment if you have any of these risk factors, or to seek professional advice before proceeding.

Can we proceed with treatment?

No.

16 Hypoesthesia (numbness): What is it?

Hypoesthesia is the term used to describe the loss of sensation, and this can include not feeling pain, vibrations, and heat and can be caused by a wide range of things such as nerve damage, scar tissue and neuropathic disorders.

Why is it contraindicated?

Diminished or loss of sensation will cause the patient to be unaware of any discomfort and will be at a higher risk of adverse reactions.

Can we proceed with treatment?

No. Areas unaffected by hypoesthesia can be treated.

CONTRAINDICATIONS Raised Mole or Suspicious Pigmented Lesions in the treatment area: What is it?

Moles or suspicious pigmented lesions are common. They can appear as small dark brown raised or flat spots. Sometimes they can become cancerous; clients should get them checked regularly and inform their doctor of any changes.

Why is it contraindicated?

Because any suspicious pigmented lesion could potentially be cancerous, we want to avoid treating over the lesion. Treating these lesions with Laser will also lead to their removal, making it more challenging for doctors to identify cancerous lesions.

In addition, these lesions could bleed very easily in response to trauma, and this can leave the client susceptible to infection.

Can we proceed with treatment?

Do not treat any raised or suspicious lesions. Clients undergoing Laser Pigment treatments are strongly advised to have a skin check prior to treatment (this is a requirement in QLD).

Varicose Veins :

What is it?

Varicose veins are swollen blood vessels that appear just under the skin's surface in the lower body. When the vein walls are weak and the valves aren't working right, blood backs up in the vein. This causes the blue and purple bulges you see on the legs, feet or ankles.

Why is it contraindicated?

During Laser Hair Removal, you should not treat over varicose veins, as high intensities of heat may damage the vein, and they can be sensitive or painful to the touch. Treatment over varicose veins may cause an adverse reaction. Medical intervention is required to cauterise or treat the lesions. We also need to consider that these types of lesions tend to manifest in clients who may be on medication that would also contraindicate them to the treatment.

Why is it a precaution?

Depending on the disease and its impacts on the body, there could be many risks, including inducing a flair up and an increased risk of adverse outcomes and infection.

Tanned (Spray-tanned) Skin or UV Exposure or Chronic Sun Exposure : What is it?

An increase in melanocyte production can be caused through natural UV exposure, even if SPF has been applied to the area. UV exposure can also result in heat retention in the skin, which can be exacerbated by medical aesthetic treatments. We can also see a change in skin tone, through the use of artificial topical applications, as well as the use of systemic drugs.

Why is it contraindicated?

The excess pigment can cause increased heat in the skin, resulting in adverse responses. The Laser energy will also be attracted to the excess pigment in the skin, resulting in a burn. Performing Laser Hair removal over a chemical substance such as fake tan may result in an allergic reaction, as well as the Laser energy being attracted to the artificial pigment on the skin. Additionally, excess sun exposure can cause skin sensitivity and disrupt normal tissue functions, increasing the risk of adverse reactions.

Can we proceed with treatment?

If the area has artificial tan or recent sun exposure, do not proceed. Wait until the fake tan has been removed and the client has been out of the sun for four weeks.

21 Open Lesions or Bruises : What is it?

A bruise, also known as a contusion, is a type of hematoma of tissue,[3] the most common cause being capillaries damaged by trauma, causing localized bleeding that extravasates into the surrounding interstitial tissues.

Most bruises occur close enough to the epidermis such that the bleeding causes a visible discolouration. The bruise then remains visible until the blood is either absorbed by tissues or cleared by immune system action.

Why is it contraindicated?

Bruised skin or skin with an open lesion is already sensitive, and the light energy from the Laser device can potentially cause further irritation, discomfort, or even damage to the open skin or bruise. It's important to allow the lesion to heal before considering any Laser treatment.

Can we proceed with treatment?

It's best to wait until the bruise or open lesion has healed before undergoing an Laser treatment.

Numbing cream in the treatment area: What is it?

Topical numbing creams are medications that serve as a local anaesthetic reducing the sensitivity or pain in the area applied by blocking the nerve signals in the body. Some are available for purchase over the counter, whilst others require a doctor’s prescription depending on their potency and ingredient percentages. Most brands consist of an ingredient called lidocaine; however, some other common ingredients include benzocaine, dibucaine and tetracaine.

Why is it contraindicated?

When performing Laser Hair Reduction, it is vital to gain feedback throughout the treatment from the client to adequately assess their sensation during treatment. This ensures we are treating the client on a setting that is suitable and safe for them whilst minimising the likelihood of an adverse reaction occurring. If the client has impaired sensation in the area due to applying a numbing cream, we are not able to accurately determine their sensation, and this could result in an unwanted adverse reaction.

In addition, numbing cream can also cause vasoconstriction. This will cause an issue for vascular treatments where we require the lesions to be dilated for successful absorption and clinical endpoint. Topical numbing creams may also cause side effects or allergic reactions interfering with your treatments and/or posing a health risk to the client.

Melanotan Injections/Permatan: What is it?

Melanotan and Melanotan II is an unregistered and unregulated product that stimulates melanogenesis to create sunless tanning generally via injection. These injections work by replicating alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone in your body. This hormone binds to melanocortin receptors and stimulates the production of the pigment melanin in your skin cells. The more melanin your skin cells produce, the darker your skin appears. Melanotan II (or Bremelanotide) may also be used as a medication to assist with stimulation of arousal.

Why is it contraindicated?

When performing any Laser, it is vital that the client does not have a tan. Laser is highly attracted to melanin, and a client undergoing any form of Melanotan treatment is experiencing an excess production of melanin in a generalised way, affecting their whole body. Therefore, treating someone whilst receiving Melanotan treatment or having recently (in the last few months) would increase the likelihood of adverse reactions such as burns and pigmentation changes.

Can we proceed with treatment?

No.Sufficient time must be given between the client having their last dose to allow for the normalisation of their melanin and skin to regulate and return to their natural tone. This will vary depending on how long the client has been using the medication and may take several weeks to several months.

Client age less than 18 years:

Why is it contraindicated?

The device has not been thoroughly tested and assessed for safety and efficacy on clients aged less than 18 years.

Therefore, potential risks may be unknown.

25 Tattoos in treatment area: What is it?

Tattoos may be cosmetic, body art or modification, medical or armature. They involve ink particles being needled into either the dermal or epidermal layers of the skin.

Why is it contraindicated?

Performing Laser Hair Removal over tattoos will cause a burn due to the high attraction of Laser energy to the Tattoo ink; this will result in blisters and potential infection. This will also fade, warp and alter the appearance of both cosmetic and general tattoos.

Can we proceed with treatment?

Do not perform treatment directly over a tattoo. Surrounding areas or other areas may be treated.

User of Roaccutane in the last 6 months: What is it?

Roaccutane is an oral medication typically prescribed for those suffering from severe cystic acne. It is Isotretinoin based and part of the retinoid family of drugs (Vitamin A derived).

Why is it contraindicated?

The use of Roaccutane has been shown to incite a variety of adverse effects on the skin, which include slowing down the skin's natural healing process and causing the skin to become thinner and more fragile. This causes sensitivity and an increased risk of infection.

Can we proceed with treatment?

No. Wait six months since the last dose.

CONTRAINDICATIONS The use of Retin-A, Tretinoin or prescription-strength exfoliants in the treatment area in the last two weeks: What is it?

A prescription-strength topical exfoliant is usually used for acne patients, for anti-ageing purposes and for managing pigmentation.

Why is it contraindicated?

Retin-A or Tretinoin may cause sensitivity, thinning, and flaking and have a photosensitising effect on the skin. This could cause the client to experience more discomfort than normal during treatment, abnormal wound healing response and increased risk of infection.

Can we proceed with treatment?

No. Wait two weeks since the last application.

CONTRAINDICATIONS Photosensitising Medication or St Johns Wort:

What is it?

Photosensitivity is an extreme sensitivity or abnormal reaction to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun and other light sources and is experienced when on photosensitising medications. Some of the more common photosensitising medications are listed in your Photosensitizing Drug List.

Why is it contraindicated?

As we are performing Laser Hair Reduction, which is a light source, the client may be more sensitive than normal and increase the risk of burns and other adverse reactions post-treatment. We wait four weeks from their last dose of medication to negate their potential for photosensitivity.

CONTRAINDICATIONS Fish oil/EFA’s (for medical purposes only)

Why is it contraindicated?

If a client is taking high doses of fish oil or omega-3 fatty acid supplements, it may increase the risk of bruising or skin sensitivity during a Laser Hair Reduction treatment. Omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fish oil, have blood-thinning properties.

Can we proceed with treatment?

No. Ultimately, the decision should be made in consultation with the client's healthcare provider. This will ensure that the treatment is safe and appropriate for the client.

30 Aspirin & other blood thinners Why is it contraindicated?

Aspirin is a blood thinner, and depending on the dosage and the client's individual response, it can affect the skin's healing process and potentially increase the risk of bruising or bleeding during the treatment. The healthcare professional or aesthetician will need to consider factors like the client's dosage, frequency of use, and any other medications or medical conditions they may have.

Can we proceed with treatment?

Skin Types IV & V increased risk of hyperpigmentation:

Why is it a precaution?

Those classified as Fitzpatrick IV & V require extra consideration and caution when treating. They have more active melanocytes that produce a more robust form of melanin that absorbs the Laser energy, resulting in a heightened risk of hyper-pigmentation and adverse reactions.

Can we proceed with treatment?

Yes, however, it is recommended that clients be made aware of the increased risk and prep their skin in the treatment area with tyrosinase inhibitors for at least two to four weeks pre-treatment to reduce the risk. Treatments can be performed with a more conservative approach to mitigate these risks, involving lower settings and longer time between treatments to allow for ample healing time. This can, however, affect the efficacy of the treatments.

Feeling unwell, flu, common cold etc:

Why is it a precaution?

When a patient is experiencing poor health, this will impact the body’s immune response, and in turn, this can lead to prolonged or poor healing, poor treatment outcome and increased risk of infection.

Other hazards include spreading the illness to the operator, other staff, and other clients.

Can we proceed with treatment?

Wait at least 48 hours post-illness before proceeding.

Smoking, Drinking & Drugs:

Why is it a precaution?

Consuming heavy amounts of alcohol, smoking, or drug abuse use can impact overall health in various ways. Some of these include liver damage, heart disease, anaemia, cancer, infections, skin disorders and digestive problems. A client who has a recent history of smoking or drug/ alcohol abuse would not be an ideal candidate for treatment due to the health risks associated, which would likely result in a poor outcome post-treatment and potential risk to the client.

Can we proceed with treatment?

If the client is currently under the influence of alcohol or drugs, do not proceed. If you have doubts about the client’s health status, do not proceed. If the client is in otherwise good health, treatment may proceed; however, it is important to highlight the heightened risks associated with treatment.

Waxing, Plucking, Electrolysis, Depilatory Creams (within 4 weeks):

Why is it a precaution?

Most of these methods involve heat, and they all temporarily compromise the skin; this can cause adverse reactions and increase the risk of infection.

The hair bulb would have been removed or compromised, resulting in less effective treatment.

Can we proceed with treatment?

Yes, if the Laser Hair Removal treatment is being performed on areas not affected by these treatments.

If treating the same area, wait 4 weeks.

Why is it a precaution?

IPL/Laser Hair Reduction involves heat and temporarily compromises the skin; if Laser Hair Reduction is performed over the same area, this can cause adverse reactions and increase the risk of infection. The hair bulb would have been removed or compromised, resulting in less effective treatment.

Can we proceed with treatment?

Yes, if the Laser Hair Reduction treatment is being performed on areas that were not affected by these treatments.

If treating the same area, wait 2 weeks.

Microneedling or IPL/Laser Skin Correction (in the last 2-6 weeks):

Why is it a precaution?

When a client has undergone a Microneedling or IPL/Laser correction treatment in the treatment area, we need to ensure the skin has adequately healed and is completely back to normal health before introducing other treatments to minimise the risk of adverse reactions.

For IPL/Laser Pigmentation skin correction treatment on the body, wait six weeks; on the face, wait four weeks. Vascular skin correction treatment on the face, wait for two weeks.

Acne skin correction on the face or body, wait two weeks due to heat retention.

Can we proceed with treatment?

If you have doubts about the client’s health status, do not proceed.

If the client’s skin is healthy, and the skin has been prepared with a selected product regime, and the patient is in overall good health, treatment may be performed. Caution should be taken to ensure the skin is treated with care.

Hormone Imbalance or Therapy:

Why is it a precaution?

Hormonal imbalances can result in deregulated hair growth on the face, neck, chest and abdomen, which results in less predictable treatment outcomes that require prolonged maintenance. If the client is not diagnosed with hormone imbalance but you suspect that this may be the case, recommend that they seek medical advice.

Can we proceed with treatment?

Yes, however, it is important that the client is informed that the results might be unpredictable and that treatment will be ongoing.

HSV 1, HSV 2 (without an active infection) What is it?

Herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2, are two members of the human Herpesviridae family. Both HSV-1 (which produces most cold sores) and HSV-2 (which produces most genital herpes) are common and contagious.

Why is it a precaution?

The heat generated in the tissue during a Laser treatment could trigger a Herpes outbreak.

Can we proceed with treatment?

If the client is prone to cold sores and is undergoing treatment on the face, they should speak to their doctor/pharmacist about a prophylactic course of antivirals to prevent an outbreak.

Cosmeceutical Vitamin A, AHA’s & BHA’s, or Vitamin C (within the past three days): What is it?

Active skincare is often used as part of a regular skincare regime to target certain conditions such as acne, pigmentation, texture issues and ageing.

Why is it a precaution?

The active ingredients may cause an increase in skin sensitivity.

Can we proceed with treatment?

Yes, if product use has been ceased three days before the treatment.

PRECAUTIONS

Fillers (within the past four weeks):

What is it?

Filler is injected into the skin at different depths to fill in deep wrinkles, provide volume, and alter or enhance facial features. Most modern fillers are temporary and have a Hyaluronic Acid base; however, if they are an older style of filler or have been performed outside of Australia, they may have a silicone or other base.

Why is it a precaution?

Filler takes four weeks to attach to the surrounding tissue and bond with water in the body. If a treatment is performed within four weeks of the injection, the filler may be moved from the original placement, which can lead to a wide range of adverse effects. The area in which the filler has been injected is quite often tender and sensitive to touch for this time. Also, performing a Laser Hair Reduction treatment over an area where a client has filler may potentially break down the proteins or move the filler placement.

Can we proceed with treatment?

Yes, as long as treatment is not being performed in an area where filler was placed, or once four weeks have passed.

Anti-wrinkle injections (Botox / Dysport) (within the past two weeks):

What is it?

Muscle relaxants are commonly used in the cosmetic industry, derived from botulinum neuromodulator type-A. They have a temporary paralysing effect on targeted facial muscles and can prevent wrinkles and creases from occurring. Other common uses include the prevention of sweating and muscle spasm treatment.

Why is it a precaution?

After having injections done, it takes two weeks for the product to settle into the muscles and take effect. If a treatment is performed on or near the site of injections within two weeks, the product may be affected, leading to a range of unwanted effects.

Can we proceed with treatment?

Treatment may be performed in areas where anti-wrinkle injections were not performed. Treatments may be performed over the area once two weeks have passed since the most recent injection and any bruising or swelling has subsided.

Chemical Peel, Microneedling, Microblading (within 2 weeks): What is it?

Treatments such as chemical peels, micro-needling and microblading all impact the skin barrier and epidermis in order to achieve the desired outcomes.

Why is it a precaution?

As the skin’s barrier and epidermis may be compromised, this raises the risk of infection and the potential for adverse reactions.

Can we proceed with treatment?

Yes, if it has been two weeks since the treatment and if the skin has completely recovered in the treatment area.

Laser Resurfacing Treatment/ Cosmetic Surgery/Surgery (within 3-6 months):

Why is it a precaution?

When a client has undergone a laser resurfacing treatment, deep chemical peel or surgery in the treatment area, we need to ensure the skin has adequately healed and is completely back to normal health before introducing any other skin treatments to minimise the risk of any adverse reactions.

Can we proceed with treatment?

No. Wait till the treatment area has completely healed. If you have doubts about the client’s health status, do not proceed. If the client’s skin is healthy, and the skin has been prepared with a selected product regime, and the patient is in overall good health, treatment may be performed. Caution should be taken to ensure the skin is treated with care.

Allergies to Latex:

Why is it a precaution?

If a client has an allergy, care must be taken to not have the client exposed to the allergen. First aid must be performed if an allergic response happens, and medical attention must be sought immediately if required.

If the allergens have been removed from the treatment area and exposure to the client can be avoided, the treatment may be performed. E.g. Latex-free gloves.

Older clients may have a slower healing response, typically have thinner skin, and are more prone to bruising and excess bleeding or underlying health condition. This can lead to poor or delayed healing, increased risk of infection, excess bleeding or abnormal healing response.

If you have doubts about the client’s health status, do not proceed.

If the client’s skin is healthy, and the skin has been prepared with a selected product regime, and the patient is in overall good health, treatment may be performed. Caution should be taken to ensure the skin is treated with care.
