PREVIEW Jr. Cross Country League opened its ninth season The Cumberland County Junior Cross Country league opened the 2015 season March 18, but it took a mammoth effort of cooperation from the CTE Construction Classes at SMHS. Trees crossed the path with branches larger than our five-year-old runners. “We will get it ready. I just need to get back to school and we can do it!" said Damon Koehl, CTE teacher, who is entrusted with the task of setting up the course year after year. “I tell our runners to divide the race into thirds. Run the first part with your head, the middle part with your personality, and the last part with your heart,” Mike Fanelli said. The

2015 season embodies the quote when it mentions “with your heart,” because that is exactly what it took to pull it off. The birth of the junior league cross country program began in 2007, with only 70 runners and three elementary schools. Those original schools were Homestead, Pleasant Hill and Stone. It was born from a dream of Pat and Damon Koehl and Laura and Louie DeLorenzo, who continue to operate the league. Laura coaches junior varsity at Pleasant Hill Elementary and Louie is the official starter of 90 percent of all of the races. Both DeLorenzo’s have given much time to the athletes in Cumberland County.

“We wanted children in the county to have the opportunity to run. They don’t even know if they like it if they aren’t given that opportunity.” Laura DeLorenzo and Pat Koehl’s dream was to open the program to any and every child. From kindergarten to eighth grade, all children may participate. “This junior league program gives them the experience to find out what running is all about. We’ve built, with the help of our coaches, two great feeder programs. It is obvious when you have both high schools’ boys and girls teams qualify for state year after year said Coordinator Pat Koehl, North Cum-

berland teacher and varsity coach, and former CCHS cross country coach. The original name of the league was CCHS Junior League and was later changed to Cumberland County Junior League after more elementary schools joined the program. The first year’s season was run in the fall of the year, but later changed to the spring because of conflicts with the high school cross country schedule. “By running in the springtime, we were able to avoid most of the other sports programs. More athletes were able to participate when they did not have to make a choice of their sport,” said Koehl. Today, there are con-

sistently 600 participants in nine public elementary schools, two private schools, and home school athletes. Coaches with assistants are in place at all schools. The original races were run at Martin Elementary, then moved to First Baptist Church of Crossville. Both places had their unique qualities. “There have been many great memories on both of those courses. Because of parking issues, the venue was changed and SMHS cordially offered their campus. It has been a great spectator course, as parents can see the runners at almost all points.” All timing is donated through the work of Vicki

and Frank Mackzum. Vicki Mackzum, teacher at South Cumberland, coordinates all preregistering, timing and dispensing of numbers. Vicki also does a league website with team and individual results. Frank Mackzum can been seen at all of the races writing numbers to add just one more timing backup. “The Mackzums are a team that graciously give time to our program. They travel across the United States timing major cycling events. What luck having them in our county," said Pat Koehl. CCHS baseball team to improve on 2014 success Jets team can be. Senior Matt Vanlandingham had a productive off-season and looks to be a very key piece to the pitching staff this year. “We really feel like there are five solid guys who can give us deep starts this year. Each one will give us a chance to win every time out,” noted Prichard. Junior Jon Hayes looks to be a key reliever in the bullpen this season, and will likely be used in a few opportunities as a starter on the mound. Sophomore Brenton Houston also looks to have an impact on the mound for the Jets. Prichard said, “We have high expectations for Brenton, as he has worked hard in the off-season and will be an important arm for us this year." Seniors Nathaniel Wyatt and Burgess could also make a few appearances on the mound. Elliott was 2-4 with one save and a 3.128 ERA with 25 strikeouts and 21 walks, while Parrott was 2-4 with two saves and a 3.983 ERA with 37 Ks and 36 BBs. Vaden was 4-2 with an ERA of 3.048, 48 Ks and 33 walks; Richards was 5-4 with two saves and a 2.503 ERA, 53 Ks and 34 BBs; VanLandingham was 2-0 with a 4.364 ERA, 16 BBs and 10 strikeouts; Jon Hayes was 0-0 with a 8.647 ERA with four walks and six strikeouts; Jacob Hayes was also 0-0 with a 14.0 ERA and four walks; and Wyatt was 0-0 with a 7.0 ERA, one walk and one strikeout. Overall, the Jets were 21-15 with seven saves, a 3.229 ERA, 244 Ks and 177 walks in 249.1 innings pitched. The 2015 Jets pitching staff also features many newcomers, including Freshmen Ryley Phillips, Dylan Cole, John Smith and Gabe Myers. Each will get plenty of junior varsity Ed Greif/Chronicle opportunities and look to be Jet senior Ryan Burgess (4) takes his lead from third base during the opening the future of the Jets. “We game of the District 6AAA In-season Tournament at SMHS March 18. The 2015 Jets Baseball squad looks to build upon last season's 21-win campaign under Coach Dave Prichard. The 2015 team returns eight starters and 14 lettermen from 2014, including All-District performers Nathaniel Wyatt, Ryan Burgess and Grant Parrett. “This 2015 squad returns a lot of players from our successful 2014 season, and we look for them to have another great year. Consistency will be the key for this team. The more consistent we can be, especially offensively, the better we will be. Last season ended just short of reaching some lofty goals. I think our guys have learned from that and are ready to take a step forward. We have placed a lot of emphasis this year on finishing strong,” said

Prichard, who was District 6AAA's 2014 Coach of the Year. The Jets will have both junior David Elliott and senior Grant Parrett seeing time behind the plate. "David and Grant are both key pieces to our pitching staff, and they will share time behind the plate as catchers," said Prichard. "David will man the dish a majority of the time. He had a good sSophomore season, and we look for him to improve upon that this year. Grant will fill in behind the plate as needed, but he is an extremely versatile player that we can use in other areas to benefit the team." Elliott, last season's Rookie of the Year, batted .231 with six doubles and 20 RBIs and a fielding percentage of .964 (215 putouts

and 28 assists), while Parrott hit .330 with 12 doubles, one triple and homer with 18 RBIs and a fielding percentage of .866 (57 putouts and 40 assists). The 2015 pitching staff looks to be very deep, returning many pitchers from last season who recorded several innings on the mound. The returning staff brings back 80 percent of the innings pitched in 2014 as well as a few newcomers. Heading up the rotation will be senior Morgan Richards and Grant Parrett. Richards and Parrett picked up 80+ innings of experience in 2014, and each looks to have a standout season on the bump in 2015. Elliott and Drew Vaden will also see several starts. The more consistency they can provide, the better this

that we had envisioned him to be for our team. The better he plays the better we will be,” said Prichard Third base will be played by both Grant Parrett and junior Justin Shipe, who batted .195 with one double and a fielding percentage of .760 (17 assists and two putouts). Parrett may see a majority of the time at third base, but Shipe will likely see valuable district time at the position and several offensive opportunities. Sophomore Tyler Thompson could also have an opportunity to see time at third base. Thompson was the Junior Varsity Newcomer Award last season. Wyatt is expected to man second base for the 2015 season. As last year's Most Improved Player, he batted .324 with six doubles, one homer and 27 RBIs with a fielding percentage of .914 (79 assists and 60 putouts). “Nathaniel really matured as a player in 2014, and we look for big things from him both defensively and offensively this year,” said Prichard Junior Jacob Hayes will serve as a valuable utility player in the infield, possibly seeing time at either shortstop, second base or first base, while Junior Ryan Fehr may have opportunities to provide and offensive spark for the Jets off the bench. The Jets outfield will have another strong season, with three players who saw significant time in 2014 returning as speedy and skilled defensive threats to opposing hitters. Richards will anchor centerfield, while seniors Ethan Cunningham and Vaden look to have breakout seasons in the corner outfield spots. Houston also looks to be an integral part of the Jets outfield this season. Cunningham batted .278 with two doubles, one triple and 13 RBIs and a had a fielding percentage of .793 (four assists and 19 putouts), while Vaden had a fielding percentage of .861 (22 putouts and nine assists) and hit .087 with one double and two RBIs. Prichard said, “Brenton has had a very good offseason. We hope that he can continue to build on that this spring.” Senior Kevin Uebelacker and juniors Jon Hayes and Tristan Wright will have opportunities to prove that they can fill in when needed in the outfield. Uebelacker won the Junior Varsity Most Versatile Award.

Offensively, the Jets need to improve from a very hot and cold 2014. As a team in 2014 the Jets batted .293 with 60 doubles, four triples, six homers and 164 RBIs. “To be honest, we were a very streaky offensive team last year. We would go on stretches where we hit the ball great and stretches where we really struggled. Unfortunately, at the end of the year, we finished really cold. Our focus this year is to be more consistent offensively. We spend a lot of time focusing on Quality At-Bats and putting ourselves in positions to succeed. In order for us to reach the goals we have set as a team, this has to be a focus. We must finish well,” the veteran Jet coach said. “We look to be a competitive ballclub this spring. We have several questions that must be answered, as do many of the teams in our district. Adding to the intrigue is our district's third year of playing an inseason district tournament during week two, creating a third game against all district opponents. That will force us to find out who we are early in the season. The 2015 in-season district tournament will be held at both Stone Memorial and CCHS March 18-21. We encourage everyone in Cumberland County to come out and see some quality baseball. We will also host our Mountain Man Classic tournament again this year at both CCHS and SMHS April 9-11. We have a great class of competition traveling to Crossville to play in the tournament, featuring two out-of-state teams and Germantown High School, a storied, former championship baseball program from West Tennessee," said Prichard. There are definitely several opportunities for our fans to catch some quality baseball this spring. "To sum it up, our entire ballclub feels that the opportunity to have a great experience this season is right in front of us and well within reach if we can continue to get better every day. We must play strong defense and pitch well. Consistency will be the key for us on offense. I really believe we can make things interesting. I like the makeup of our team. We spend a lot of time talking about family, and these guys have really come together as one. Regardless of what happens, I really like our team and these guys are fun to coach and be around,” concluded Prichard.

When the Cumberland County High School tennis teams opened the 2015 season on March 24, Laurie Kerr returned for her second season as head coach looking to improve on the team's 0-11 record last seaon. She returns five lettermen — four girls and one boy. Of those five, four are starters — three girls and one boy. "As we continue to rebuild Jet Tennis, I am looking forward to the season with this amazing group of young people. We

have 13 girls this year — eight of those being beginning players. We will only have five boys this year with two of those young men being beginning players," said Kerr. The girls roster includes Cami Threet, Morgan Houston, Mary Kemp, Madison McLaughlin, Brittney Bright, Shelby Kilby, Rani Patel, Isabel Ager, Karon Wyatt, Erika Rodriguez, Karina Rodirguez, Giselle Marquez and Riddhi Upadhyay. The boys roster is Tyler Boniol, David Reagon, Joshua Han, Pritum Debnath, Michael Methvin and Blake McLaughlin.

"Players are working hard and learning fast so the improvement I am seeing in this young squad amazes me every day. It is exciting to see young people start tennis and love it so quickly that they want to play and improve. We have five of the top six players returning and I look for them to improve their records from last year with closer matches and more wins. Of the 18 players,

we have only one senior, so we look to be even stronger next year. One of our mottos this year is "40Love" which reminds us of the importance of serving in winning matches and we are focusing on that in practices. We will be co-hosting a two-day, mid- season district tournament this year with SMHS. This is a first for our district and we look forward to that event."

Whitson will be assisted by second-year coach Don Griffies. The Jets were 6-7-2 overall and 1-5 in District 6AAA last season and were eliminated in the first round of the district tournament. "Thirteen of our 23 total players are returners from last season. Even though we have 13 returning players we are still pretty young. “Our biggest goal is to make improvements and build on what we did last season. Our district record

obviously didn’t make us very proud last season so we’re looking to bring more to the table this year," said Whitson. The three seniors are Kevin Buffkin, Dustin Davis and Austin Everett. "Kevin and Dustin have both played since their freshmen year and we expect a lot out of them this year, on and off the field. “This will be Everett’s second season playing for us. Our seniors are a pretty versatile group and will be playing all over the field," he added. CCHS has seven juniors. Most of whom have all had quite a bit of playing experience. Alex Pribanich, Christian Lopez, Jaret Johnson,

Xane Hazelwood, Dalton Teeple, Spencer Romero and Andew Phipps round out the Juniors. "These young men have had lofty goals for our program since their freshmen year. Many of them put in a lot of time in the off season, hopefully we’ll see their hard work pay off this year," Whitson noted. There are seven sophomores. "Austin Akers and Sammy Zeino both started for us last season, but all of this class has grown a lot as soccer players over the off season. Brandon Stubbs, Jaxson Norris and Drake Isaacson will offer us more depth this year and new comers Corey Brooks and Kyle Higgins will give us more options

He is assisted by Stuart Bowen. "We have 15 girls and 19 boys on this years team. The girls are heavy with ninth and 10th graders, while the boys have a ton of 10th and 11th graders. We have four seniors on our squad with three of them being four-year lettermen in Kassidy Sommer, Chris-

ty Carter and Brad Mathis. Brad has been a state qualifier for three years and Kassidy for two (injured last year). We look for all of our seniors to make it to the state meet this year," he said. "Our team is deep and talented and should be able to score points in most of the events we compete in and at most meets as well. Once again we are traveling all over the state to see the best of competition and out of state too. I believe that this will be the year that you see a Jet, finally

make it on the AAA medal stand," he concluded. SMHS track team preparing for successful 2015 As the snow and ice of 2015 gives way to the beautiful weather of spring time, the Stone Memorial High School boys and girls track teams will be preparing for yet another successful season. This season the team boasts a massive squad as more than 70 students are currently representing the school. “Most sports worry about numbers, we don’t have that issue. It’s a really great thing and I am excited about the numbers. Of the roughly 70 we have out probably 2/3-3/4 of them are multi sport athletes. That speaks highly of our coaches pushing our student/athletes to be involved in other sports,” said Coach Matt Bates. Bates is beginning his third year as the track and field coach, and has overall records of 108-99 (boys) and 161-49 (girls), after posting marks of 2978 (boys) and 86-34 (girls) in 2014. He returns 17 starters, including 15 lettermen. The 2014 season saw the

Lady Panther qualify the most ever for the state meet. Hailey Coudriet, Tiffany Cokkinias, Lexi Hinch, Bailey Rutledge, Aly McNulty and Kayli Priestwood all qualified. The only one not returning is Priestwood. Other girls listed on the roster are Kassandra Ayala, Berenice Colin, Tabitha Davis, Nicole Grayson, Alley Hale, Amber Howard, Alexis Howard, Sienna Howe, Tesa Johnson, Cheyanne Jones, Alexia Kelch, Anna Kemmer, Achia McDonough, Ashlynn McNulty, Rachel Raulerson, Caitlin Reed, Kaitlin Seiber, Emma Smith, Indy Smith, Emma St. Marie, Marissa Stephens, Claire Tackett, Hannah Turner, Darlene Villalbos and Emma Waldo. “To send as many to the state meet as we did last year as phenomenal. It was our first year in AAA and a great surprise to get that many through our sectional qualifier,” added Bates. The Panthers have sever-

meets. Highlighting this years schedule is the return of the King of the Mountain series on March 26, April 2 and April 14. “We filled these three meets up very quickly! I posted them in December and before Christmas break was over they were filled up. We have more depth this year to field than we have ever had. This year will by far be the best yet,” added Bates. Bates wants to make sure that the public knows that they are invited to all three of these meets. The field

events start at 4 p.m. and the running events will start between 4:45-5 p.m. Bates will be assisted by Tim Cokkinias (third year), Drew Delorenzo (second year), Denise Sloatman (first year) and Louie Delorenzo (second year). “We are excited to expand the staff a little bit in numbers. However, we have growth exponential in knowledge of the sport. We look for this to pay dividends for our student athletes,” said Coach Bates.

They return five lettermen and one from starter from last season. "Yes we lost 10 seniors and we will go through some growing pains early on. However, I am extremely excited about this group

of guys. During our preseason workouts they have shown a great investment and attitude towards reaching our goals. This investment has created an awesome chemistry. This season will be a marathon. Bilbrey returns for third season as SMHS coach When the Stone Memorial Lady Panther softball team opened the 2015 season, Brittany Bilbrey returns for her third season as the head coach and returns six lettermen, including four starters. She will be assisted by Zach Bilbrey. "The Lady Panthers are excited for a fresh start this upcoming season. This group of young ladies has committed themselves to an off-season conditioning program and are excited to see what the upcoming season will bring. We started conditioning in the fall and have continued that same intensity into practice. With so many inclement weather days we are all anxious to be able to get out on the field. This year’s team has a mix of experienced upper classmen and a talented sophomore and freshman group. We are proud of the effort that they have shown and expect big things from them," she said. Hawn, Taylor are new tennis coaches at SMHS

The Stone Memorial Panthers tennis team is ready to begin its 2015 season with eight girls and six boys. Recruiting is still under way to add to the starting line-up for the

boys, who finished 5-9 last season. The Lady Panthers finished 10-5. William Taylor has officially come on board as the Panthers court coach this year, although he has

been actively hosting training sessions and tournament opportunities for young players from across the region for several years. Ray Hawn returns as the head coach, replacing Jason

Allen who left at the end of the 2013-'14 school year. Taylor is the tennis director and head pro at the Fairfield Glade Racquet Center, which is generous and accommodating for the

training of tennis enthusiasts for both the young and the young at heart. The top girls player this year is senior Ali Harris who is back in top form, just narrowly missing advancing to the state tournament last season. Five starters return for the Lady Panthers. Junior Stephen Tung is the top returning boys player whose game has great-

ly improved and looks impressive for the 2015 season. Four boys starters return. SMHS first home tennis match was versus CCHS on Tuesday, March 24. The Panthers are scheduled to play 10 matches and two tournaments this season, including a District 6AAA In-season Tournament cohosted with CCHS.

The Cumberland County High School baseball program placed a Wall of Honor at Jet Park to recognize former players who received accolades during their playing career. Currently, the program has gathered All-District, All-Region, and All-State recognition dating back to 1994. Currently no information has been found for the years 2000, 2006, 2007 or the years prior to 1994. If anyone has any information on players who received AllDistrict, All-Region or All-State awards during those years or prior to 1994 please contact CCHS Head Baseball Coach Dave Prichard at (931) 337-9721 or dprichard@k12tn.net so the CCHS baseball program can recognize those players. The Wall of Honor can be seen on the outside wall of the first base dugout.

Schedule changes Some of the spring sports schedules have been changed or modified because of the rain, snow and ice that plagued Cumberland County in mid-February and early March. A number of non-district events postponed because of the inclement weather will probably not be rescheduled. Make-up dates will be announced in future editons of the Crossville Chronicle. Sports editor Ed Greif would also like to thank everyone who contributed to this section.
