Renovations are on the rise

Beauty of wood turns homes into masterpieces

(BPT) - Ever since humans stopped dwelling in caves and started living in huts made of tree branches, wood has been an indispensible structural and decorative residential material. Man’s house-building relationship with wood - historically, culturally and experientially - is deep, long and universal. In part that’s because wood is abundant, economical, durable and flexible. But our enduring love affair with wood is also due to the fact that, like us, each piece of timber is unique - its color, texture and grain are as individual as a human personality, so we keep discovering new

aspects of its beauty and versatility to delight in. Architects, designers and homeowners are creatively using wood’s inimitable qualities to bring character, warmth and distinction to different parts of the modern home. In Denver, Colorado, Sun Mountain, Inc., a manufacturer of custom doors and flooring, used selectgrade alder - a hardwood with a tight grain and few knotholes - for a traditional-style double front door. The elegantly rustic design, which combines solid alder with glass panels and metal hardware, is set off by the See wood page 11

In the not-so-distant past, home improvement projects all but came to a halt, as homeowners were weary about investing any money into fixer-uppers. But the tides have changed dramatically in recent months, and homeowners are again ready and willing to invest big dollars into home renovations. Renewed confidence in the economy and an upswing in the real estate market have contributed to the remodeling frenzy. In early 2014, the Joint Cen-

ter for Housing Statistics of Harvard University forecasted nearly $150 billion in major remodeling spending over the year. JCHS said as homeowners gain more confidence in the housing market, they’re more likely to undertake home improvements they would have avoided in recent years. While the numbers do not yet match pre-recession remodeling spending, the number of construction projects has steadily

tionality with them wherever they go on their phone or mobile device. “With the start of the new year we are ushering in a new era of convenience and usability for our members,” said VEC Vice President of Information Technology Karen Davis. “Our members can communicate with VEC and take charge of their energy account in a multitude of different, convenient ways.” Davis said the convenience of using all these powerful tools is the crucial element. “The abundance of tools available to members is only practical if

our members can easily use them in a convenient way,” Davis said. “We’ve worked hard to make sure these online and mobile instruments are not only powerful, but easy to use as well.” To take advantage of these powerful and convenient tools, VEC customers can visit www.vec.org and register for VE-Bill. such as mulch and rocks in the beds and not in your yard where they can get picked up by mowers and weed eaters. Curbing is also durable. It is a solid piece of concrete that is reinforced with fiberglass fibers. Our curbing, when completely set, cures out to being somewhere between 5,000 and 5,500 psi. The average driveway is only 4,000 psi, so our curbing is actually stronger than your driveway,” Nichols said. “It’s not some cheap plastic edging that falls apart after one season, or manufactured concrete edgers the have to be straightened and replaced each year, or metal edging that works its way out of the ground all the time. Once our curbing is in place it doesn’t move. It’s tough enough to stand up to mowers, trimmers, and our weather. It’s a once and done type of product.” TNT’s curbing products also come in a wide range of colors and patterns that will blend and enhance any landscape. The newest product offered by TNT Landscape Services is concrete surfacing. The product is a polymer-based concrete that can be used to surface virtually any concrete surface such as driveways, patios, sidewalks, garages, pool decks, and even walls. “We offer amazing curb appeal through concrete. Yes, these systems will make your home and its landscaping the best looking in the neighborhood,” Nichols said. TNT believes a home’s landscaping should reflect the look and style of the

home as well as the style of the homeowner. Now, landscaping doesn’t end with grass, bushes, and trees, even though we do this also. “Look at the largest feature of your landscaping — it’s your driveway, walks, porches and patios. Shouldn’t they be included in the overall plan for your landscaping? This is where we come in. A lot of folks will spend a lot of money to paint, stain, or hide the driveway and sidewalks of their home because they don’t know what to do with them. Paint and stain are only surface treatments and do not adhere to the concrete itself, therefore it will chip and peel off making them look bad,” Nichols said. TNT’s systems, which do bond to the concrete, can now incorporate your walks and drives to be part of the landscaping, enhancing the look of your home and tying everything together. “Our system provides the home owner with virtually unlimited choices in colors and patterns. Unlike stamped or etched concrete, we are not limited to the molded stamps or the acid colors that other concrete finishers are. All our

patterns are custom which means there will not be another home or business with the same pattern or color that you have, and our color selection is only limited by the homeowners’ imagination,” Nichols said. Imagine the look of tile, marble, granite, or even wood done in concrete. TNT’s systems are capable of these looks. Virtually any surface can be resurfaced using the CTI systems. “We have helped many home owners, business owners, and churches increase curb appeal and, in every case, safety by resurfacing their concrete surfaces. The new surface

has a non-slip texture to it making it the safest surface you can have around your home. We can also resurface wood surfaces, rock surfaces, laminate surfaces, and of course concrete. So, you can see, the possibilities are endless,” he said. Damaged, worn, discolored, pitted, or just plain ugly concrete is something that needs to be addressed. Concrete is porous and its worst enemy is moisture and from day one of your concrete being poured it begins to deteriorate. “That is why you see all those cracks and pits and these will not go away, See TNT page 5

• Continued from 4 as a matter of fact, they will only get worse until the only thing you can do is completely replace the concrete. We can repair and resurface those damaged areas to make it look new again, and the best part is, we warrantee it,” Nichols said. If you have new concrete, TNT’s systems will prolong its life and make your home the show place you really want. Having your driveway and walkways professionally cleaned and sealed will make your concrete resistant to road chemicals, dirt, oil, grease, and just about anything that can get on it. Considering this protection along with a wide selection of colors for about $1 per foot is the most affordable way to ensure your concrete stays looking new for years to come. “The most important part of our systems is our warrantees; no other concrete contractor will give you one,” Nichols said. It can also be applied to existing counter tops, tile floors, and wood sub floors. In new construction we can give our customers a totally custom look at the builder grade price. “Imagine, getting a $25-per-square-foot look at only $5,” Nichols said. “This product is stronger than your original concrete, easier to maintain, and is a lot nicer to look at with the optional patterns and stencils available. We can even take concrete floors and make them look like wood floors.” One of our recent customers was commenting on the landscaping we had just completed saying, ‘Everything looks beautiful but what can be done about our ugly driveway

and sidewalk?’” Driveways, patios and sidewalks are such a large part of landscaping: Shouldn’t they look as presentable as the rest of your home? “I’ve seen a lot of driveways and sidewalks being replaced recently due to bad concrete. This is a real mess and the process is expensive, too. Tearing out the old concrete, along with a portion of your yard, reforming and pouring new concrete, is the old process. Not to mention this process does not come with the guarantee that your new concrete will not fail again. I have seen concrete less than a year old have pits and cracks all through it. Concrete is concrete and it is going to crack. Our freeze and thaw cycle, moisture and poor workmanship are the primary reasons for concrete to fail,” Nichols said. Painting your concrete is not a solution to ugly concrete either. Paint, no matter where you buy it from, is a surface treatment and is not formulated to bond to the concrete and will not bond to the concrete; therefore, it chips and peels up almost as soon as you can put it down. Our material actually bonds to the concrete making it stronger, safer, and at the same time making it beautiful. “Without the mess and the ability to minimize the effects of weather and workmanship to concrete, we can resurface the concrete so these cracks and pits and discolorations do not appear. Our process makes it virtually impervious to moisture, as well as making it a breeze to clean. All of this, and we can even guarantee it. No other concrete contractor can, or will, do this,” Nichols said. From designing and

installing a complete landscape package, installing a new lawn, building a walkway or retaining wall, installing landscape curbing, or resurfacing old pitted, cracked ugly concrete, TNT Landscape Services is your local, affordable choice. If you are at all thinking about upgrading your landscaping or if your concrete drive and sidewalks need repair stop by their booth or give them a call at (931) 787-6776 and see why their customers say ‘they took care of our property as if it were their own.’” “We might just save you a lot of money,” Nichols said.

Power tool safety tips Power tools can dramatically reduce the time it takes to complete home improvement projects. Professional contractors regularly rely on power tools for cutting and sanding, and many doit-yourself renovators follow suit and invest in power tools to help get the job done. But power tools, in spite of their usefulness, are not without risk. According to the Work Safe Center, power tool injuries account for as many as 400,000 emergency room visits in the United States each year. Power nailers, chain saws and table saws account for the greatest number of injuries. Keeping

safe is of the utmost priority when using power tools. Here’s how: •Read all manufacturers’ instructions and guidelines before use. •Keep your tools clean and in proper operating con-

dition. •Use the right tool for the job. •Always wear eye protection, such as safety glasses or goggles. See SAFETY page 6

of all. Cellulose is treated for fire retardancy according to federal specifications. “The real benefit is the fire protection it gives with cellulose in the walls and attics,” Miller said. “If bedroom walls are insulated, it gives added fire protection plus sound proofing.” Made from a renewable natural resource which diverts waste from landfills, cellulose insulation not only limits greenhouse gas emissions during manufacturing but also prevents waste paper from releasing environmentally harmful gases as they decompose in landfills. Stabilized cellulose is sprayed into wall spaces between the studs in new construction and the same stabilized product is used in attics of new and existing buildings. Both of these applications are used in residential and commercial settings. The spray applications have become a standard feature in the better homes of Cumberland and surrounding counties. “We at Comfort Zone are so convinced of the benefits of cellulose that we do not offer fiberglass for walls or attics, but we find a way to apply cellulose. Due to the airtight properties of cellulose, it is a proven way to control heat loss in existing attics,” Miller said. “We constantly have positive reports on energy savings, with up to 35 percent lower heat bills.” Uninsulated attic stairs are a major source of heat loss. There are several different applications Comfort Zone can recommend to address this. “Our stabilized cellulose

has adhesive in it, which is moisture activated in both walls and attics. Therefore, in attics, our product stays in place over time with only minimal settling. This gives our customers a higher R-value for a longer period of time then the product which is purchased at the local box stores.” Comfort Zone offers an alternative that is even more energy efficient and can enhance the cellulose product. The sprayed polyurethane foam insulation allows for more extensive service to the needs that arise in construction. There are two procedures to use this product — spray all foam in walls and attics or spray foam for total seal in exterior walls and fill the balance of the cavity with cellulose. “We find this is a very effective application and combines the best of both worlds,” Miller said. Miller has more than 40 years of experience in various aspects of the residential building industry and this experience plus customer service has a proven track record at Comfort Zone Insulation. Polyurethane is also sprayed on crawlspace walls and rimjoists in the crawlspace encapsulation procedure. Using polyurethane in encapsulation makes a waterproof, airtight insulation which bonds permanently to the block, with a higher R-value, creating a superior complete house envelope as well as a complete moisture and mold resistant vapor barrier. The polyurethane is also sprayed under floors in crawlspaces, plus walls and ceilings of metal buildings. “This product is for peo-

ple with an open mind and a ready pencil. It is not an expense, but an investment that pays dividends,” concluded Miller. Miller invites readers to come visit Comfort Zone at

the home show for demonstrations of heat-loss and the recycled product. For more information, call 277-3278 between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Discover Tennessee...The Retirement Capital of America!

T

Tennessee Recently Named #1 Retirement State!

ennessee’s cost of living is responsible for its place at the top of the list. Tennessee has the second lowest cost of living in the country, behind Oklahoma, according to data collected by the Council for Community and Economic Research. Also, its local and state taxes are the third lowest in America, in the context of its income, sales and property tax levels, according to the Tax Foundation. Other outstanding criteria includes the state’s warmer than average climate and access to hospital beds. Middle & East Tennessee are among retirement destinations. There’s many reasons retirees love our area including our low cost of living, no state income tax, easy access along major interstates, and our four season climate. Tennessee is easy to get to with several major interstates running through our state making it within a day’s drive for over 50% of the United States. Through the years, our area has received recognition from numerous media outlets as one of top places to retire to. In 2001, Homes & Land Media introduced RetireToTennessee.com as

a way to showcase our great state to the baby boomer generation. Those planning their retirement will find a number of helpful resources online including information about Tennessee’s geography, climate, way of life, cost of living, and communities to retire to. Retirees can click on different parts of the state to learn more about each area and even find current homes for sale as well as local real estate agents. Baby boomers control over 80% of personal financial assets and more than 50% of discretionary spending power. They also own more real estate than any other generation. The real estate agents in Homes & Land report that many of these relocating baby boomers are the coveted cash buyers. Some of the most popular retirement areas include area lakes, golf courses, and retirement communities. Two of the groups of retirees coming to our area include snowbirds and half-backs. Snowbirds are people who have a second home in a warmer location and migrate south for the winters. Many of them use their vacation time to declare permanent residency in our state because of the lack of state income tax. Half-backs are those from the North and Mid-west who relocate to Florida or other areas further south and decide

it’s too far from home. They end up moving half-way back to our area to be closer to family and friends. See the pros on our pages for more information. “I already did!” That has been the comment echoing from the Smokies across East & Middle Tennessee to Crossville and the Upper Cumberland as people see the “RetireToTennessee.com” display booth at area home shows. “I’m from Wisconsin. We’re from Illinois. We’re from Michigan. I’m from Florida. I’m from Indiana.” Homes & Land targets more buyers… including retirees. Historically these are the Top Ten States where individuals reside that are requesting area magazines: Florida, Tennessee, Ohio, Kentucky, North Carolina, Illinois, Indiana, Georgia, Alabama and New York. RetireToTennessee.com has been targeting Baby Boomer/Retirees in every issue of Southern Living Magazine for over 10 years. Homes & Land reaches Millions of Visitors annually traveling area highways in the Smokies with our extremely visible delivery vans and billboards. Nobody provides more exposure than the real estate pros on the pages of Homes & Land! Homes & Land is a leading integrated real estate media franchise founded in 1983 by Russ & Cheryl Haskins. Stone-coated metal roofing systems, such as those from Allmet and Gerard, offer Class A fire resistance, energy-savings, and great durability.

Metal roofs growing in popularity (BPT) - It’s hard to believe, but the 2013-’14 polar vortex wasn’t all bad. Sure, it brought North America record cold and snow, in one of the worst winters ever. But the weather phenomenon’s silver lining was in persuading many homeowners it was time to forever abandon their conventional roofs for something better. That “something” is the increasingly popular metal roof. According to the St. Louis-based Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA), the residential metal roofing market has grown by double digits in the last five years. Residential roofing experts report metal roofing is winning converts based on its durability, fire-resistance,

energy savings, value and natural good looks. “People are getting tired of having to replace asphalt shingles every 10 to 12 years,” says Brian Cosyns, president of Metal Roof Outlet in Courtland, Ontario, which installs hundreds of metal roofing systems yearly. “People are becoming more and more educated on metal roofing, and are seeing the longevity of it ... after completing [a metal roofing] job, you’ve made a big difference in appearance, energy savings and the value of the home.” The MRA reports nonmetal roofs last 17 years on average, but metal roofs can last a lifetime. Though higher in initial costs, they can boost homes’ resale value.

RISE

• Continued from 2 trended upward. According to the National Association of Home Builders, as of November 2014, a greater number of remodelers reported higher business activity than during the previous quarter. Remodeling spending has been gradually climbing back up from the all-time low it reached in 2009. This growth in home renovations has led to more jobs for carpenters, plumbers, painters, electricians, and other construction workers. In Massachusetts alone, a recovery in overall construction employment has led to a gain of about 18,000 jobs during the past four years. The Home Improvement Research Institute expects an additional 5.8 percent sales growth in home improvement spending in 2015. States that showed the high-

est levels of home improvement spending in 2014 are likely to continue to hold the top spots through 2015, and the National Association of Home Builders says these areas include the District of Columbia, Connecticut, New Jersey, Maryland, Massachusetts, and areas of southern California. Americans are not the only ones increasing their home spending. According to reports released by Moneris Solutions Corporation, Canada’s largest credit and debit card processor, purchases at home improvement stores rose by 8.49 percent over the same period last year, and spending on plumbing and heating equipment and electrical contractors climbed by 5.14 percent and 5.08 percent, respectively. Spending patterns indicate that homeowners are investing in DIY projects as well as seeking specialized work provided by professional contractors.

A satisfied customer reported she saved $1,075 on her energy bill and saved $607.74 on her gas bill, for a total savings of $1,682 in only one year. “With savings like that, her unit will have paid for itself in a few years and continue to pay her back for the duration of her 10-year worry-free warranty,” Gilmer said. Crossville Heating and Cooling can also offer improved indoor air quality. “With the odd weather we’ve been having this year, there are many who have gotten sick or are having more severe allergies than normal,” Gilmer said.

“Indoor air quality isn’t anything new, but we are happy to offer our expertise and a wide variety of products that can help keep the sickness away and keep allergies to a minimum.” Customer service and professionalism are key values of Gilmer, who himself lives in Fairfield Glade. “We care about Crossville and believe that integrity, professionalism and customer service is the only way to maintain a great reputation,” Gilmer said. That great service is also backed by a great product warranty, with regular maintenance included. That service has also garnered Crossville Heat-

ing and Cooling several acknowledgements from the community, including the Crossville Chronicle’s Reader’s Choice Award, 2012 Angie’s List Super Service Award, based on unbiased reviews of Angie’s List members, and the 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 Carrier President’s Award, presented to less than 1 percent of dealers in the United States. “We are proud to bring this award home to Crossville for four years in a row,” Gilmer said. “For the President’s Award, it’s customer satisfaction, not just the sale, that counts. That’s why we strive to provide per-

That decreases summertime cooling loads and also insulates against winter’s cold, saving homeowners utility costs. Metal roofing’s aesthetics are realistic and mimic natural roofing products, experts say. traditional detailing were inspired by a ship captain’s quarters - a subtle reference to both the home’s lakeside location and the style in which the house is built. Designed by Atlantabased architect Stephen Fuller and constructed by Gabriel Builders, Inc., the imposing house is a playful take on the grand Shingle Style made famous by New England’s “summer cottages.” But Fuller made sure to include a number of smaller, cozier rooms where the family would feel snug and comfortable, and he often used wood to achieve this. No matter what style of home you prefer, from the traditional to the modern, American hardwoods in all their diversity will allow you to realize that vision perfectly.

Replace bulky deck railing with modern cables for a sleek look. (BPT) - When spring arrives will your deck be ready for “primetime?” Or will it still be wearing the shabby remnants of last season’s look? Clunky, viewblocking railings, a rectangular layout and dark stain are so last decade. Before warm weather gets here, consider upgrading your outdoor living space with the trends that every welldressed deck will be wearing this year.

Cable railing = better views

Whether you’re lucky enough to live on the water or you spend a lot of time keeping your backyard green

and blooming, wouldn’t it be great to be able to enjoy the view from your deck? Traditional wooden railings can block your view, and glass can be hard to clean. More view-seeking homeowners are replacing wooden balusters with stainless steel cable railings. Do-it-yourself kits from manufacturers make it easy to replace old balusters with stainless steel cable, creating a sleek, upscale and viewfriendly look. The cable can be used with wood, metal or sleeved posts with a solid core, and you can retrofit any railing with the cable. gence. The report is vital in this process.” Unlike others in the industry, Perry’s report is free from “generic” or “boiler plate” information. “There is nothing in my report that ‘appears serviceable’ because in my opinion this kind of information doesn’t help my client. I designed and developed my own report format after being a full time inspector for 12 years. My report is 15 to 18 pages long including pictures of key issues. They are easy to read and straight forward. My customers love them,” Perry said. Another difference is Perry’s education. “This is another one of the key differences between home inspectors. Many individuals getting into the industry have either retired from an unrelated profession or have chosen this as a new venture. They attended a state

mandated two week education course, paid for a state license and started inspecting. It can be quite scary, to tell you the truth, how little some ‘licensed home inspectors’ know or how little they communicate to their clients. My background is all about construction and inspections. I had about 15 years of construction and residential maintenance experience, seven years of that as a licensed builder/contractor in central GA, where building codes were in place and being enforced. I entered the home inspection industry full time in 1993 and became certified by ASHI (American Society of Home Inspectors) in 1995. Since that time I have received roughly 700 hours of continuing education directly relating to the construction or inspection industries. I have also gone through the educational and testing process

to obtain my ICC certification as a Residential Building Inspector. To adequately and professionally inspect a home with all of its various components and systems is very demanding. The more fully qualified and experienced the inspector is, the more thorough and detailed the results should be,” Perry said. The inspection business is changing. “The current social time period is referred to as ‘The Information Age’ and I think that applies to the home inspection profession as well. Each year that I am in business I get more calls from ‘informed clients’ that want accurate and unbiased information about various areas or systems of their home. This ranges from clients that are having a new home built, that want the process done correctly the first time, to clients with existing homes

that have a company trying to sell them something that they may or may not need. More and more clients are gaining the understanding that I can provide them with the real information they need. Since I am not selling a product or service, my only interest is in protect them, my client. I provide accurate, reliable and relevant information based on actual building science or product manufacturer requirements, not sales propaganda, hearsay or Bubba’s opinion,” Perry said. If you have questions about your home, or would like an unbiased, professional opinion, come see Mr. Perry at the “Home Show.” Remember, “Protecting you and your home is my business!” Perry said. • Continued from 16 most respected, well-established and widely recognized certification organization for North American solar professionals in the field of renewable energy. “The NABCEP certification is the ‘gold standard’ for photovoltaic and solar heating installation and photovoltaic technical sales certification,” explained Bauer. “A lot of time, hard work and study was spent

on these achievements, but I feel this national recognition is good for our installers and business and, ultimately, our customers,” Bauer said. Bauer first introduced solar power at the 2009 Cumberland County Home Show. In addition to designing, selling and installing solar systems, Zuercher Electric has also helped homeowners with the electrical hook-up of their own installations. These systems range in size from five solar panels to 176 panels.

Bauer works with Randy Velker of Simple Energy Works to sell and install these systems. Velker is also NABCEP certified for solar installations and sales. Together, the two businesses account for 15 percent of all of Tennessee’s NABCEP certified installers. “It is exciting to see so many homeowners deciding to install solar panels,” Bauer said. “For some, it is a business decision to invest in their future power needs. For others it is just the

sheer excitement of being a power producer with no fuel costs involved.” In business since 1987, Zuercher Electric Company offers residential electric wiring, repair services, central vacuum systems, audio and intercom systems, generator backup systems and solar photovoltaic systems. Zurich Homes, at 44 Peavine Plaza, Suite 104, in Crossville, was founded in 2005 with a focus on the Fairfield Glade market. “I believe we will continue to see increased demand for new homes from retirees moving to the area,” Zuercher said. “We will continue to develop homes and designs that will meet their needs, such as large outdoor living spaces, guest suites and large, walk-in showers.” The average Zurich Homes construction is around 2,100 square feet of

Experiment with paint

Paint is one of the most affordable ways to dramatically change the look and energy of a space. If you have dated tile, research if tile paint is an option for your kitchen or bath. Don’t forget the fifth wall: a fresh white ceiling instantly brightens the area and visually heightens the room, which can make the space feel larger and more modern.

Frame the mirror

Every bathroom has a mirror, and some kitchens and adjacent dining spaces feature mirrors as well. If you have a builder-grade mirror, you’re probably longing for more style. Instead of investing in a costly new mirror, simply add a new frame around your current one. You can buy a prefabricated frame or create one yourself fairly easily from supplies at your local craft store.

Metal roofs are available in a wide variety of styles and colors to complement any style of architecture. There are profiles that mimic the look of clay tile, cedar shakes, slate, thatch or traditional shingles. While these metal roofs look like these traditional roofing products, they won’t crack, break down, burn, split or rot, and are much more impact resistant, lightweight and low maintenance, which does a long way with the durability and longevity of steel. Many of these products come with a 50-year warranty.

Plateau Metal Sales has an in-house roll former to manufacture the traditional three-foot wide metal panels, made with the latest in metal roofing technology. The perfect blend of high tensile steel in a high strength, attractive profile, it is also protected by the newest space-age coatings. This manufacturing process allows quick delivery of the product, taking only one to two days. Plateau Metal Sales manufactures the standing seam metal roof on the jobsite, which eliminates cost and damages caused by crating and shipping the finished panels. Standing seam metal is a heavier gauge metal and has a completely hidden fastening system for

durability and longevity. Plateau Metal Sales has an in-house computerized trim, which allows the business to manufacture custom trims, chimney caps and other specialty products to complete and make a new roof look better and be more wind resistant. Plateau Metal Sales also stocks insulation, sliding door hardware, gutter guards, ventilation products and lathing strips to complete a building project. In 2009, Plateau Metal Sales opened a sister store in Lenoir City, allowing the business to obtain and pass on to clients even greater savings through volume buying. The focus of Plateau Metal Sales has always

been to give our customers the best possible product available at a fair price, in the fastest time possible. The Millers are excited about continuing to serve their customers by exceeding their expectations. Plateau Metal Sales hosts periodic free training days to help installers learn factory recommended techniques for installation. The seasons can be harsh on homes, and perhaps no season is more taxing on a home’s exterior than winter. Harsh winter weather can take a toll on roofs, gutters, landscaping, and just about any other part of the home that must face the cold head-on. The following are a few areas of your home that might need some help rebounding from winter now that spring has finally arrived. • Gutters: Gutters are vulnerable to winter weather, as strong winds may blow debris into the gutters or even blow the gutters off of the house. Gutters should be cleaned prior to and immediately after winter to ensure they’re working properly and not backing up to the point that water can build up and damage the roof. Reattach any loose gutters and clear them of any debris left behind by winter winds. • Roof: The roof is another area of your home’s exte-

winter, as such cracks can be safety hazards and may even prove to be entry points into your home for water or critters. • Landscaping: Landscaping also tends to take a hit in areas that experience harsh winters. Winter storms may damage trees, which can put a home right in the line of falling limbs or worse. Walk around your

property to inspect for tree damage, removing any fallen limbs or cutting down any limbs that appear dead or that might eventually prove a safety hazard. In addition, check the grass for any dead spots that might have fallen victim to winter freeze, and address those spots when the time comes to revitalize your lawn. • Appliances: When sur-

veying your property after a long winter, inspect appliances like a central air conditioning unit or even dryer vents to make sure they made it through the winter

unscathed. Such appliances may have proven an attractive nesting spot for animals over the winter, but damage can be significant.

Help your home’s exterior rebound from harsh winter weather rior that may have been beaten down over the winter. Examine the roof for cracked, missing or deformed shingles that can allow water to enter a home and damage its interior. Some roof damage is visible from the ground, but homeowners who just endured especially harsh winters may want to climb up on their roofs or hire a professional to get a closer look. Another way to determine if the roof was damaged is to go into your attic and check for water damage near roof trusses. Water damage indicates something went awry over the winter. • Walkways and driveways: Heavy snowfall or significant accumulation of ice over the winter can result in cracked or damaged walkways, driveways and porches. Some of this damage may have resulted from aggressive shoveling or breaking up of ice. Look for any cracks in areas that needed shoveling over the

Tips on a first renovation project Home renovations are typically exciting, as homeowners get to see the visions of their dream homes come to light right before their very eyes. Turning an outdated bathroom into a modern oasis or an empty basement into the ultimate man cave strengthens the sense of attachment homeowners have with their homes. But few home renovation projects go from start to finish without experiencing a few bumps in the road along the way. Such bumps can be difficult to handle for hom-

eowners working on their first renovation projects, but there are many ways for novices to navigate the sometimes murky waters of home improvement projects and come out relatively unscathed on the other end, where a newly renovated home awaits. • Plan well and know what to expect. When working with contractors, get all agreements in writing and spell out exactly what you desire in a home renovation. Photo references can help guide contractors and archi-

tects. Ask for the full picture of what can be expected with the work, from demolition to the punch list. Knowing what lies ahead can keep

you grounded throughout the project. • Discuss work each day See PROJECT page 23

Paying for all work upfront leaves homeowners at a disadvantage, as it does not provide incentive for workers to be timely and efficient. Check in with workers to get daily progress reports. • Have reasonable expectations. A renovation project may exceed its budget and take longer than initially expected. Understanding

that these potential setbacks might be part of the process will make it easier to handle them when the foreman speaks to you about any issues that arise. • Accept the mess. Construction work is messy. There’s no way to maintain a pristine house when contractors are entering and exiting all day. Dust is bound to be generated, and tools can fill up rooms. A home in disarray can be stressful, but continue to visualize the end result and the mess won’t bother you so much. • Establish a contingency plan. Bathrooms and

A quick, 3-step energy audit could save you hundreds (BPT) - If you are winterizing your home to protect against the headache of frozen pipes and potential water damage, conducting a quick, three-step energy audit now can help prevent nasty surprises when the heating bill arrives. It’s human instinct to increase the heat during the coldest winter days, however, this comes with increased heating costs that can stretch the household budget. Air leakage contributes significantly to home heating costs. Air escaping from the home’s envelope means the furnace

has to work overtime to compensate and maintain a comfortable living temperature. As a result, energy consumption remains high, monthly bills continue to climb and any efficiency achieved through other methods is fruitless. The U.S Department of Energy’s Energy Savers website suggests that floors, walls, ceilings and windows account for 41 percent of air leakage in homes. A simple energy audit can help you better understand your home’s performance and ensure your heating bills don’t break the

bank this winter. Start by thoroughly cleaning all vents, filters and ducts. Use a vacuum to remove any dust and debris around your furnace’s filters. Then, have a professional clean your ductwork. Cleaning can noticeably improve the performance of your home’s heating system, allowing it to run more efficiently. Having a home energy auditor complete a “blower door” test will allow you to better understand how air flows through your home. This comprehensive test measures how much air is

moving through any cracks around doors, windows and other potential problem areas. A well-sealed home should have no leaks. The energy auditor will also use equipment such as a “smoke pencilkmn” and infrared camera to further assess the home’s overall performance and identify problem areas that need to be addressed. Finally, have an insulation professional assess your existing insulation’s performance. Gaps, cracks and inconsistency of insulation coverage can significantly impact your home’s

energy performance, as well as your monthly heating bills. A licensed insulation professional can make recommendations as to how to address air leakage effectively with a better-performing insulation material. One high-performance, long term solution is spray foam insulation. Spray foam insulation, like that available from Icynene, works well in all climates to fill cracks and gaps, stop air leakage and help reduce the strain on your heating and cooling equipment. This insulation material both insulates and air seals

the home helping to noticeably reduce monthly heating and cooling bills. Additionally, spray foam insulation’s air-sealing qualities allows you to reduce the size of your heating and cooling equipment since less effort is required to heat or cool the home. While air leakage can cause your heating bills to jump significantly this winter, completing a quick energy audit and having a well-insulated home can help you get through the cold winter months.

According to a report by cool-companies.org, lighting consumes 40 percent of electricity in commercial buildings and is accountable for another 10 percent of the cost of cooling the heat it produces. By using daylight as a significant part of their lighting strategy, companies in a wide range of industries have greatly reduced their energy costs. Natural light is much less stressful on the eyes because it is full-spectrum light, meaning it has all the colors of the rainbow in it. Extensive research indicates we need at least two hours of natural light exposure each day to func-
