Bertram urges fellow grads to seize opportunity By Rebekah K. Bohannon Beeler Chronicle correspondent
Stone Memorial High School (SMHS) valedictorian, Jessica Lynn Bertram, is the daughter of Nathan and Lucy Bertram. She was born in Columbia, South America, in the city of Bogota. She and her family moved a lot when she was younger and settled in Crossville when she was six. She has been an honor student all of her life. Bertram said her parents instilled within her a desire to excel. Jessica Bertram’s tightly knit family topped her list of people who are life forces and her greatest influencers, including her parents, older sister and older brother. “We are all very close,” she said, describing her immediate family as a solid unit. She also credited her favorite sport, volleyball, and her teacher, Mrs. Blake, for influencing her success. She loves being athletic and played basketball at SMHS for two years, volleyball all four years and she enjoys long distance running.

Bertram said, “Volleyball taught me to work as a team and be a leader. No matter who the opponent is, if you play with heart you can rise to the task.” She is also a member of the Math Club, Spanish Club, FCA, and Student Council. The senior class voted Bertram most attractive. She loves to read in her spare time. When asked to describe herself with five descriptive words she was modest and humble, but managed to agree that she was a motivated and goaloriented perfectionist who was hard-working and tried to be a role model. “I haven’t failed at anything, yet,” said Bertram, “I know how to study and I’m usually pretty laid back until there’s a test I’m unsure about,” she laughed. “In volleyball, I can be pretty demanding and when it comes to work, I’m a hard worker.” Raised a devout Catholic and enriched with those principals and morals, Jessica Bertram is a firm believer in the Golden Rule, Jesus and to always strive to be better tomorrow than you
are today. Jessica Bertram is excited about her bright future and smiled as she said, “I like change. It keeps life interesting.” Her optimism is certainly contagious and her advice is as sound as her academic performance at SMHS, “Don’t limit yourself. Seize every opportunity you are presented with.” “[Being SMHS Valedictorian] is one of my biggest accomplishments,” Bertram said beaming. “It was definitely on my life list.” As it turns out, Jessica Bertram bargained with her father who wanted to send her to a private school. She made him a deal that she would be Valedictorian if she was allowed to attend public school. Her next major milestone is to acquire her medical degree and become a doctor. When asked if she had any hesitation whatsoever about her chosen profession and whether or not she had a backup plan, Bertram stated, “I don’t do Plan B’s. It’s Plan A, all the time, and it has worked for me so far.” Obviously, Bertram is on to something. If she had a
Plan B, then she wouldn’t have to work so hard to achieve Plan A. Bertram’s approach to reaching her goals is effective because there is no safety net which might promote a tendency to lessen her efforts. This way, she must succeed or fail. And failure is not an option. She has a meek but strong confidence that she knows what she is capable of and what she expects from herself. Having received the UT Volunteer Scholarship, Bertram plans to attend the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and major in premed. She decided to enter the medical field because she was inspired by an anatomy class offered at SMHS. “I enjoyed how interesting the body is and the amazing things it can do,” said Bertram. “On top of that, I really want to help people.” Bertram hasn’t decided on what she will specialize in, but her biggest dream is to travel the world and use her medical practice to bring aid and relief See bertram page 5C
‘Don’t miss out on the memories’ says Kerley By Rebekah K. Bohannon Beeler Chronicle correspondent
Rachel Briar Kerley, the daughter of Connie Tacke, is Stone Memorial High School’s Class of 2014 salutatorian. She was born in Cumberland County but moved and started school in the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. She returned to Crossville in the fourth grade and always challenged the accepted wisdom. An honor student all her life, Briar Kerley never settled for anything less than an “A.” She credits her academic success to her mom for pushing her and accepting her at the same time. “My mother always said she would accept a B or C if I worked really hard and gave it my best try,” said Kerley, and she continued with a laugh, “but, I knew she really wanted me to make A’s.” Kerley said her grandfather instilled in her hard work ethic and her grandmother taught her to be the best she could be towards others. Kerley also has an
older brother and younger sister. Briar Kerley was given her unique name by her mother, who named her for Sleeping Beauty when she is hidden away in the woods and changed her name to Briar Rose. She has so many passions she couldn’t name them all, but knowing that learning takes a lifetime, said, “I don’t want to limit myself.” Ironically, she said she is afraid of failure and concedes that, in itself, is limiting. “I’m a walking contradiction,” she smiled as she admits. Kerley thoroughly enjoys math, is a member of the Read Club and the bowling team. Participating on the bowling team taught her how to be a good organizer by putting together matches and events. When asked what her biggest dream in life is, Kerley’s humor burst forth as she casually stated, “My biggest dream would be to win the lottery and buy a large house in the mountains. That’s Plan A.” But, on the off-chance it doesn’t work out, she said, “I just want to enjoy life and not let the little things pass
me by.” Briar Kerley has mixed emotions about the future. However excited she may be is challenged by some intimidation because she doesn’t know what to expect. But her assurance is that life, in all its experiences, is beautiful. Her advice is as intriguing as her personality, “Don’t take school too seriously. Grades are important, but so are the memories.” Not the average philosophical standpoint for a Salutatorian, but, then again, Briar Kerley is not your average young lady. The top five words that describe Kerley are that she is a mellow and quiet person who is a natural learner with dry humor and wit. She is steadfast in her Baptist upbringing and stands solidly on those principals. Timeliness and manners are very important to Kerley. As she puts it, “I’m early to arrive because I don’t want to miss anything. I always try to be as polite as possible and not be hypocritical. I live by the standards I accept from others.”
Kerley is a hard worker, especially when it is something that matters. “I’ll show up early and stay late to help make others’ lives easier,” she said. As far as responsibility goes, Kerley stated, “It is the most important of all to be dependable and clean up your own messes.” When asked about her accomplishment of being SMHS Class of 2014 salutatorian and whether or not she had striven for valedictorian, Kerley gave up another twist and said, “I actually wanted to be third place,” she continued with a small laugh, “so I wouldn’t have to give a speech.” Kerley received a Hope Scholarship and Presidential School Scholarship at East Tennessee State University, where she plans to attend. She said she has not declared a major because she hasn’t decided what she wants to do with her life. She hopes to find her niche while attending ETSU because the vast possibilities and career choices the college offers. “I can dabble in many areas of academia and I’ll know where to go from

there,” Kerley said. Because she loves math so much, she expects to at least minor in math. “I overachieve in certain aspects of my life but, above all, I want to be happy and do something that makes me happy every day.” In regards to her alma
mater, Kerley said, “I’m glad I was able to be a student here. SMHS offers so many classes. The wonderful staff here has supported and guided me throughout my high school journey. I have mixed feelings about leaving here and I will miss my friends, but I’m ready to move on.”

When asked about her alma mater, she warmly stated, “Here at SMHS, a lot of teachers have impacted me and given me advice when I needed it. I’ve made a lot of memories here. But, I am excited about the next chapter of my life to begin.”

KEEPSAKE GRADUATION EDITION Long always strived for the best she could do

Cumberland County High School (CCHS) valedictorian, Chelsey Long, is the daughter of David and Kim Long. She was born and raised in Crossville. Throughout her education, Long never accepted anything less than an A. “One of my biggest goals was to get A’s. High A’s,” said Long. “I always wanted to strive for the best I could do. I’m a perfectionist and always want to excel.” She credits her parents for always helping her with
everything she ever needed so she could do her best. Her friends always supported her efforts and encouraged her, as well as her teachers. As an only child, Long has been surrounded with caring and compassionate people who wanted for her to more than succeed; knowing what she is capable of, they wanted her to flourish. “I don’t know where I would be without their support and I should be a part of that support for them, as well,” Long stated. Being the CCHS Class of 2014 Valedictorian, Long describes the honor as a dream come true.
“It has always been a goal of mine. It was a dream. But, I wanted to try for it anyway. I wanted to prove to myself to everyone who always believed in me.” She is very passionate about dance team and choir. During her years on the CCHS Dance Team, Long learned the value of being in this close family and working together. Choir encouraged Long to come out of her shell and develop her voice and her confidence. Choir also taught her more about herself as she gained the skills to express herself through music.
Long is close to her parents and said they are very proud of her. In regards to her biggest dream, she said, “If I could pursue a career in music, I would love to. But, then again, I’ve always had computers to fall back on and I really think they are interesting. I’d like to be a programmer or something similar. And I would love to go after my masters or Ph.D. I think I could go really far with it.” Long is fascinated with technology and wants to learn as much as she can about it. “It’s a good fit for me and it’s an area I am drawn See LONG page 3D

She credits her parents for pushing her and her older brother for his influence. “I really look up to [my brother] because of his accomplishments,” Kanagasegar said. “I’m personally motivated to do my best. I’m very driven and always challenge myself.” Nithya Kanagasegar had wanted to achieve her goal of being Valedictorian.

“Chelsey and I have been neck and neck throughout our careers here,” she said of her competition, but continued, “but, Chelsey deserves it. She works really hard and if it was going to be anyone, I’m glad it was her.” Her grandparents live in India and she is close to them all, especially to her

• Continued from 1D to,” she said. She plans to attend Tennessee Technological University and study Computer Science. Her advice is simple and true, “Always have faith in yourself. Strive to try hard no matter if you think you might fail. Keep going. You can achieve anything you set your mind to.” Long stands on her Christian beliefs saying, “One reason I’ve gotten this far is my faith.” Her work ethic is based on the principles of hard work, “Never slack, never get discouraged, and always keep my head up,” she said. She also endeavors to do the right thing and make the right decision, no matter how hard it might be, be a good friend and a good person to others, and commits to doing good works. Long is excited to branch out and start new things, but she said there’s always
a fear of making the wrong decision. “But, I’m ready to start,” she said, “to start my new life.” Her next big milestone is going with her church on a mission trip to Peru to help aid flood victims. Then she will start on her degree. As far as being a student at CCHS, she said, “I definitely had a good experience here. Everyone was so nice. I never had a negative moment here. For me, CCHS was a good fit and I fit in well here. I can see myself here and couldn’t imagine going anywhere else. CCHS provided an excellent way to transition myself for college. With the awesome teachers and good administration and good student body, it has been nothing less than a wonderful high school experience here. I am ready to take on a new beginning. It will be a good experience to branch out and meet new people and engage in new things.”

Graduates attain academic honors and accolades Below the names of graduates in this special supplement, readers will find that some have achieved honors, distinction or as a Tennessee Scholar. Each distinction is earned by meeting certain benchmarks and criteria. Honors Students who score at or above all subject area benchmarks on the ACT or equivalent are recognized as graduating with honors. Those scores are 18 in English, 22 in math, 21 in reading and 24 in science. Distinction Students will be recognized as graduating with distinction if they attain a B average and complete at least one of the following: • Earn a nationally recognized industry certification; • Participate in at least one of the Governor’s Schools; • Participate in at least one of the state’s All State music organizations; • Be selected as a National Merit Finalist or Semi-Finalist; • Attain a score of 31 or higher composite on the ACT; • Attain a score of 3 or higher on at least two advanced placement exams; • Successfully complete the
International Baccalaureate Diploma program; or • Earn 12 or more semester hours of transcripted post-secondary credits. Those earning the distinction of Tennessee Scholars have completed a demanding high school curriculum that emphasizes “on level” and above courses in mathematics, science, social studies, language arts and computer literacy. It also stresses the importance of attendance, dependability and service to the community, requiring 80 hours of community service. The Tennessee standard is based on the existing Tennessee Higher Education system, which includes career and technical schools, community colleges, the Board of Regents university system and the University of Tennessee. It also fully considers the manufacturing and service industries in Tennessee and the trainable workforce needed for continuing their operations or new industry. This Tennessee standard will allow students to pursue academic excellence to enter colleges, universities or the technical workforce.

• Continued from 1D hard work and determination from,” said Kanagasegar. Nithya Kanagasegar is a competitive force on the tennis court. Playing tennis since she was eight, Kanagasegar ranks top 90 in the South and top 10 in the state and she has won many awards and accolades. She was player of the year three years in a row, has never lost a district match and is undefeated this year. “I like it because it is a mental game, too,” she said. “Every point is different. You have to think on your feet. It isn’t like basketball or football where you race against the clock. There’s always a chance to turn it around.” She is also a gifted piano player. Having played since she was five, Kanagasegar has found a strategic stress reliever in the piano. She recently performed for her senior recital to raise money for Relay for Life. “It is very relaxing. I love the piano. It is very different from smacking a tennis ball and offers a different type of relief,” she said. “It is just really nice to be able to sit down and play and let go of emotions and things for a little while. I am so glad I was able to learn how to play and stick with it over the years.” Kanagasegar is a member of the Beta and Math Clubs and also has a lot of volunteer experiences that are meaningful to her. At the library, she taught an iPad class to help those unfamiliar with the technology learn how to use it. She also volunteered
at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore and served as secretary and president of Interact, which assists with many service projects as a branch of the Rotary Club. “These opportunities taught me leadership, organization, timeliness, and making deadlines. I’m a pretty organized person anyway so it helped,” said Kanagasegar. She describes herself as a hard-working, well-balanced person who is determined, ambitious and strong-willed. Her principles and beliefs and standards are such that she tries to be as good as she can to people, but also speaks her mind and is tolerant. “I am tolerant. It’s very important to me. It is more than just kindness. Being Indian and throughout my travels I have been exposed to diversity, and I think that contributes to my tolerance of others and being nonjudgmental,” Kanagasegar stated. She is undecided as to what college she will attend but has three in mind. She also hasn’t declared a major but is thinking that she will pursue something in biology and is leaning on the idea that she would enjoy medical research. She is considering a minor in computer science. Her biggest dream is to play tennis at a really good school and to find cures through her medical research. “I enjoy learning. Research and teaching and anything else I do, I know there is always something to learn,” Kanagasegar said. She loves science and is particularly interested in the

human body but doesn’t have the stomach to be a doctor. So, research was a great way to tie in all her interests and learn more and more and explore through her own self inquiry. “I’m excited for the future and look forward to seeing how everything will unrav-
el,” she said. “Life is a constant change. But, I need to do my own research and figure out what I really want to do.” Her advice is, “It is important to challenge yourself in high school, but don’t forget to enjoy the experience. Do things you enjoy because
people remember you for the impact you made on them.” As far as her experience at CCHS, Kanagasegar said, “Considering that most of my friends didn’t come here, it was like a fresh start and I didn’t really know many people. The teachers were welcoming, as were the stu-
dents, and I quickly felt at ease here at CCHS. The support I received from the teachers pushed me to excel at everything I do. As I begin a new chapter, I will always keep the lessons and memories I’ve gained from this school.”

Mentors wanted: How to guide more young women to success in STEM (BPT) - Careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) are growing and quickly. By 2023, STEM will generate a projected 2.6 million new jobs, creating a high demand for qualified employees with STEM backgrounds in the coming years, according to Georgetown Public Policy Institute’s Center on Education and the Workforce. Despite attractive career opportunities for the next generation of STEM workers, the industry continues to be predominantly male. Women make up only 24 percent of the STEM workforce, the U.S. Department of Commerce reports. Several programs nationwide are working to close the gender gap by encouraging participation among female students in STEM projects, activities and lessons early on in their education. DeVry University’s HerWorld is one such program. Its mission is to educate high school girls about STEM-related fields and connect them with real-life role models. Throughout March, designated National HerWorld Month by DeVry
University, thousands of young women will interact with their peers, learn from experienced women in high-visibility STEM careers, and participate in confidence-building activities and hands-on workshops at HerWorld events across the country. “HerWorld was created 17 years ago to fill a need for programs that support and develop high school girls’ interest in STEM,” says Dr. Donna M. Loraine, provost/vice president of academic affairs at DeVry University. “While we have made great progress, our focus for HerWorld today is to encourage girls’ interest in these subjects in high school and beyond by connecting them with mentors who can show them that careers in STEM are challenging but realizable.” One-third of women who enter STEM bachelor’s degree programs after high school switch their major to a non-STEM field by the time they graduate, according to a study by the U.S. Department of Education and National Center for Education Statistics. Demonstrating to teenage girls that there are women who
will support them through their journey in STEM is an important part of HerWorld’s objective. This year for National HerWorld Month, DeVry University is partnering again with Mayim Bialik, best known for her television roles on “The Big Bang Theory” and “Blossom.” The renewed partnership between Bialik and DeVry is a natural fit given Bialik’s own STEM background: she earned her Doctorate of philosophy in neuroscience in 2007. “My biology tutor on the set of ‘Blossom’ was a tremendously significant mentor for me, inspiring me to look at science and my academic skills in a different way,” says Bialik. “Though I am currently employed primarily as an actress and not a neuroscientist, I still benefited from a role model showing me what I could achieve in the sciences. I think young girls today deserve the same thing and I want to give them the confidence they need to succeed in STEM.” The STEM industry has garnered national attention recently, most notably in President Obama’s 2014
State of the Union Address. “Teachers and principals in schools from Tennessee to Washington, D.C. are making big strides in preparing students with skills for the new economy - problem solving, critical thinking, science, technology, engineering, and math,” says President Obama. “Some of this change is hard. It requires everything from much more challenging curriculums and more demanding parents to better support for teachers and new ways to measure how well our kids think, not how well they can fill in a bubble on a test. But it’s worth it - and it’s working.” HerWorld is part of this national momentum. Bialik and guest speakers who are role models from a variety of STEM backgrounds will show high school girls how they can apply their skills and intelligence to unique and interesting careers in STEM. Closing the gender gap requires opening the eyes of the next generation to the many possibilities in STEM, and no one can do that better than the women who have seen their own aspirations come to fruition.
How to approach saving for college expenses Parents typically have a lot on their plates. In addition to juggling life’s daily events, parents also must keep their eyes on the future, which typically involves planning for retirement and saving money for their kids’ college educations. Though both rank high on many parents’ priority lists, parents should approach college savings much differently than they do retirement savings. • Prioritize retirement savings over saving for college. Some par-
ents might feel a degree of guilt if they deposit more money into their retirement accounts each month than they do into their kids’ college funds. But such a strategy is nothing to feel guilty about. College students who take out loans have a lifetime ahead of them to repay those loans, while their parents have far less time to grow their retirement savings. No parent wants their child to be saddled with debt after they earn their degree, but that does not mean
parents should sacrifice security in their golden years just so their child can have minimal or no debt when they graduate from college. Studies show that the average college graduate still earns roughly a million dollars more over his or her lifetime than someone with just a high school diploma, so a college diploma still offers financial incentives that can soften the blow of repaying college loans. • Look into college savings plans. Simply socking money
away in a savings account is no longer enough to finance a college education. That’s because interest rates on standard savings accounts are very low, and as The College Board(R) notes, the college tuition rate of increase is substantially higher than the general inflation rate. In addition, according to The College Board, the average 201314 tuition increase was 3.8 percent at private colleges and 2.9 percent at public universities.Both of those figures are higher than the aver-
age increase in personal incomes, meaning parents are earning less while tuition costs are rising. So parents who want to finance all or some of their kids’ college tuitions need to be more creative. Survival tips for your graduation ceremony School commencement ceremonies are right around the corner, meaning thousands of students and assorted friends and family members will participate in celebrations littered with lifeaffirming speeches and the distribution of well-earned diplomas. Graduation can certainly be a momentous event that is remembered for years to come. But some ceremonies are remembered for all the wrong reasons. Lengthy run-times and uncomfortable conditions can turn commencement celebrations into exercises in survival. Nerves may run high, and boredom may set in. But there are ways to make the best of the situation. • Get adequate rest before the ceremony. Soon-tobe graduates should go to bed early the night before the ceremony in preparation for their big day. Some commencement ceremonies begin early in the morning, and feeling rushed or exhausted from a poor night’s rest can only compound nerves and anxiety. Graduation eve should be a low-key night when grads and their friends and family enjoy a quiet meal and some time to reflect on the last several years. • Dress accordingly. Grads should watch the weather report and dress for the weather under the gown. Many schools opt to hold the preceedings outdoors because the open space can accommodate more people. This subjects participants to the weather, whether that means blazing sun or wet and rainy conditions. Be sure to dress comfortably. If the ceremony is indoors, realize it may be hotter than normal in the auditorium or they may have the air conditioning turned up to overcompensate. Dressing in layers is may be your best option. • Leave young kids at home. Graduation ceremonies can last for several hours, during which the audience is expected to remain quiet and attentive. Such expectations may prove challenging to youngsters. Encourage family members to keep young children at home; they can
always enjoy the post-ceremony party later on. • Protect your skin when attending outdoor ceremonies. Even if the meteorologist warns of thunderstorms,
play it safe and coat yourself in sunscreen. This will protect your skin if you’re sitting out in the sun and afterward when standing outside as well-meaning fam-
ily members insist on taking photos on campus. • Eat before the ceremony and stay hydrated. Don’t skip breakfast on graduation morning. Eat a hearty meal
that will hold you over until after the commencement. Make sure to stay hydrated and bring a bottle of water with you to the ceremony. A graduation ceremony
is a special event, but one that can be lengthy and tiresome. But there are ways to make it through the ceremony more manageable.

(Note: Rules vary depending on the type of account, so parents should not assume all withdrawals are tax-free.) But college savings plans can also have an impact on a student’s financial aid eligibility, as these investments are often treated as parental assets (retirement account assets are typically not considered parental assets when determining a student’s eligibility for financial aid). So parents should explore all of the ins and outs of the various college savings plans available to them before opening any accounts. • Encourage students to save for their own expenses. Many high school students are not in a position to work a lot or even at all during a school year. And working too much may ultimately affect students’ performance in the classroom. But parents can allow kids to work during summer vacations, and encourage youngsters to save a substantial amount of their earnings from summer jobs. This can teach kids valuable lessons about money management, and money kids save from summer jobs can be used to pay for additional expenses that do not fall under the umbrella of college tuition, including books, food or even housing. Saving for their children’s college education is a priority for many parents, and there are various ways parents can do just that without sacrificing their retirements.
