Carrie:

The Musical by Michael Gore, Dean Pitchford, and Lawrence D. Cohen

Sam Houston State University – 2024

I based both Carrie and her mother Margaret’s looks off clothing worn by extremist Christian sects such as Pentecostalism and Jehovah’s Witnesses.

At a cast size of 22, this was the largest production I had worked on, and so I worked to maintain a cohesive look while maintaining individuality among the ensemble.

A storytelling tool we used through this production was Tommy Ross’s letterman jacket, which he gives to his girlfriend Sue before the prom. This jacket is shown at the beginning and end draped on the back of Sue’s interrogation chair, tying the end to the beginning to show how Sue is reliving these memories repeatedly.

The prom looks were some of the most fun looks to create, especially matching people to their dates and creating unique looks.

One of the goals for this production was to drop liquid blood on Carrie at the prom. The challenges this presented for me was ensuring that the garments that would get blood on them could be washed clean. This was solved with plenty of testing of the blood formula and the materials that would be exposed to the blood.

Beauty and the Beast

Bigfork Summer Playhouse - 2024

This was my first experience co-designing, and we ended up splitting responsibilities for designing the castle staff. I designed Cogsworth, Babette, and Madame de la Grande Bouche. I also designed Belle’s costumes.

My co-designer and I wanted to create the suggestion of objects largely within a more realistic silhouette. In Cogsworth I did this partly by giving his garments a wood grain texture via paint.

Madame being a wardrobe as well as a diva meant she had to have a large costume. The drawers and doors we crafted from foam and painted

Babette and the others had to also be able to change from objects to human for the finale. In her case, we had two different petticoats, one with feathers and one without.

Belle’s gown is an iconic look that I wanted to both honor and distinguish from. My favorite element is the roses on the skirt, the edges of the petals painted gold.

Credit for construction of the gown goes to Austin Rausch.

Galatea by MJ Kaufman – Costume Design

Sam Houston State University – 2023

A big theme through the design of this show was recycled materials, which I chose to interpret as sustainable materials in the form of cotton in denim.

The show also features gods that have to be visibly different from the human characters, shown with more color and abstract elements.

Hierarchy was shown in the mythical beings through metallic tones being used for nymphs versus iridescent for gods, and the augur (a village leader) is shown as being adorned with all manner of beads, pins, and chains.

Makeup Design

A detail of this design was the patches resembling the ones popular in the 18th century of different shapes and placed in locations that indicated something about each character.

Designs were inspired by a blend of modern and period styles, and on some characters dramatic feather eyelashes were used.
