EDUCATIONAL & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT As a seasoned Fortune 100 executive, with greater than 40 years of global advanced manufacturing and economic development experience, I’ve learned a thing or two about what creates successful individuals and communities. Many of those years were spent selecting manufacturing and corporate headquarter sites, along with a corresponding workforce. That coupled with transferring a family with school age children 17 times, has solidified this core belief: There is nothing more important in a community, than its K-12 schools; nothing else even comes close! Our current economic development renaissance within Covington and Newton County Georgia, is a direct result of the full commitment of the community and Newton County School Systems leadership team(s). The interconnection of education and economic development is clear, and the programs we have put in place ensure our citizens will thrive from cradle to career.

David Bernd Vice President of Economic Development Newton County Office of Economic Development

We know that optimal education in partnership with an engaged community creates economic vitality, and have created programs to support our citizens from cradle to career.

EDUCATION AND THE WORK FORCE Connect Newton is a bridge between local schools and businesses, between educators and manufacturers, education and job opportunities.

CONNECT NEWTON The program, created in Covington, provides elementary, middle and high school teachers a chance to get to know the culture and core values of local businesses by participating in manufacturing externships. They get an inside look at companies around the county and the skills required of their employees. They are then able to share what they’ve learned about local career opportunities and culture with students and parents, both inspiring the students and presenting real life career options close to home. This insight not only gives teachers an opportunity to shape their curriculum, but offers students a chance to realize how their education and interests can transform into a career after high school. This innovative partnership between the Office of Economic Development, The Newton County School System, and Local Industry Partners has doubled in size since it began in 2018.
