In 2019, the Community Spirit Committee was formed as part of the BVSW PTO. It is made up of students from each high school class (freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors), parent representatives, feeder school representatives and school administration. The purpose of the group is to build community spirit through improvements in communication, community-based activities, promotion of high school sporting and performing arts events, crossing efforts to help at feeder school events, visits to the feeder schools from various school groups (such as the football team, cheerleaders, and band). We work with Wolf Pack Crew (BVSW’s, student-led school spirit group) as well as Student Council to provide funds, volunteers, ideas and to help spread the student spirit to the community that supports them.

ONE FAMILY! Five Schools, One Family! That is the way we look at our school community! Blue Valley Southwest, Aubry Bend Middle School, Morse Elementary, Timber Creek Elementary and our newest addition, Wolf Springs Elementary.

BVSW opened its doors in 2010. As we enter into our 2020 fall semester, take a moment to think about what you can give to your community (volunteering, attending events, financial support, encouraging our students to get involved...). There are so many ways each of us can feel included and help our students know they have the support of many.

Community seems to be on the top of everyone’s list these days!

With the unprecedented events that have occurred in 2020, we are reminded that we need each other, whether we are living in the same house or we are six feet apart. No matter what the school year brings, we know that a strong community bond will help us through.

Last year, at Back-to-School night, Mitch Holthus (the Voice of the Chiefs) spoke at our parent spirit assembly. He asked each of us to encourage our kids (not just our own, but all) through a positive note, call or in-person. By letting our students know they are cared about by the “village,” our hope is that they will feel a sense of belonging and a desire to get involved.

The Vrabac’s Lively Yorkie

Wendy and Dan Vrabac were so happy 12 years ago to add another member to their family. Vinny, their pride and joy, is a little spunky Yorkshire Terrier who loves to go on long walks and watch the neighbor kids play.

Originally, they had another dog, Spencer, but with Spencer growing older, he needed a friend, a lively friend. That’s when Wendy and Dan knew they needed another pup. The family found a reputable breeder and drove to see the puppies. Once they picked the one they wanted, they tested to see how well the small pup would get along with Spencer. It was quickly apparent that they were inseparable.

Vinny, being the alpha male he is, loves to be in front of everybody all the time. On walks, he even prefers to be in front of Wendy and Dan. The family says that Vinny is such a kid-friendly

dog. He loves to sit on the driveway and watch the kids play. They love how sweet Vinny is, and how he just loves to lay and cuddle with them. But, their favorite thing of all is that they do not need alarm clocks when they have Vinny. Vinny will wake them up every morning free of charge. How convenient!

They say that all dogs should be spoiled and Vinny is just one of those lucky dogs. He gets so much love it’s crazy. He is loved to pieces and will forever be a major part of their family. He may get tired a little faster, and he may not see as well as he used to, but he keeps bringing joy to Wendy and Dan every day. The Vracbacs are so happy to have their little ball of joy in their lives!

Life is fun in the great outdoors for the Doerr Family.

Doug, Susan, Colin, Dylan and Karlee moved to Mill’s Farm six years ago and live on 163rd Court.

Originally from Nebraska, Susan attended the University of Nebraska, Kearney and Doug studied at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Susan is a Fitness and Yoga Trainer and is very active in the fitness community. You can find her teaching classes and training clients at Lifetime Fitness, Overland Park. Prior to that, Susan taught at local boutique studios. Doug is an Environmental Engineer and serves on the Overland Park Chamber of Commerce. He has also been instrumental in coaching sporting teams for their three children.

Susan and Doug enjoy traveling and walking their dog, Avery, a 2-year-old Labrador. Some of their favorite travel destinations are Puerta Vallarta, St. John and Colorado. The Doerrs take a yearly ski trip, spend Christmas in Mexico, and enjoy a quick three-hour drive to the beautiful, Big Cedar Lodge in Branson.

Susan also enjoys running, tennis, yoga and anything outdoors. Doug can be found on the golf course, playing basketball and watching Husker sports teams. As a family, they root for the Chiefs, Royals and the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Some of their favorite local restaurants are Red Door Grill, Enjoy Pure Food, Zocales and Rockhill Grille. For now, they have been enjoying grilling steaks, chicken and veggies at home.

The Doerrs have a fun sense of humor and unwind watching Schitt’s Creek, Modern Family, The Office, Elf, and Christmas Vacation. U2, Kings of Leon and Maroon 5 are their favorite bands.

To relax, they like to read, watch sports, sit by the pool, and enjoy a good happy hour with friends.

The Doerr’s oldest son, Colin, graduated this past spring from KU with a Business and Marketing degree and works at Apollo Health Insurance in Lee’s Summit. Dylan is a sophomore at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln majoring in Business with an emphasis in Sports Management. He currently works at Wolf Creek Golf Course. Karlee is a junior at Blue Valley Southwest High School and will be trying out for the tennis team this year and is working at Spin Pizza.

The Doerrs love Mills Farm and all of the beautiful amenities from the nearby schools, walking and bike paths, landscaping, and their wonderful community of friendly neighbors.

Another easy recipe to make for the family during our stay at home days! This is similar to a gumbo, but much faster to make.

Adjust the spices according to your taste!

INGREDIENTS: 1 stick butter, melted in stockpot 1 ½ cup chopped onion ½ cup chopped green pepper (optional) ½ cup chopped celery 3-4 minced garlic cloves 2 Tblsp. Flour (I use Wondra flour, because it won’t lump) 1 bottle Bloody Mary mix 1 can cream of celery soup 1 tsp. kosher salt 1-pound raw shrimp, peeled ½ tsp. cayenne pepper 1/8 tsp. Tabasco

Sauté’ the first five ingredients for about 15 minutes. Stir in flour quickly so it doesn’t lump. Add the next four ingredients and cook for 5 minutes.

Add remaining ingredients and cook for 10 minutes uncovered over medium heat. Turn heat to low, and serve when ready. Spoon into bowl and put a scoop of white rice in the center.

Squeeze the lemon juice over, and top with chopped parsley, if desired.

Katie achiever of the month

Katie Flood, August’s Achiever of the Month, is candid in admitting that her theater career likely started in middle school because of her “need for attention.” All kidding aside, it didn’t take long for her to realize that there were more important things than being center stage. It was learning how the stories she told onstage impacted the audience and left them thinking that had her hooked.

During her high school career, Katie was heavily involved with the Blue Valley Southwest theatre department. She was a member of the repertory theatre class, head captain of the improv team, and was in every mainstage production. One of her biggest highlights, and most challenging roles, was playing the role of Nina Zarechnaya in The Seagull. The performance was made sweeter by the fact that her director, Dan Schmidt, who taught and nurtured her love of the theater, was awarded his Master of Fine Arts Degree later that year.

Behind the scenes, Katie was a part of the National, Spanish, and Science Honor Societies and volunteers at Children’s Mercy Hospital. She is a firm believer that you need to feel well to perform well, so she makes her physical and mental health a priority. She says she also maintains balance by using a planner to keep organized and making sure to tackle important tasks first.

Katie will be heading off in the fall to attend the University of Kansas to study human biology with the hope of eventually practicing pediatric care. Good luck, Katie, break a leg!

GIVES BACK TO FRONT LINE WORKERS

The Hernandez girls provided colorings for the Johnson County Med-Act Group.

FLAG KC: Front Line Appreciation Group, KC When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the United States in March, people scrambled. Some scrambled to get toilet tissue, Lysol wipes and disposable gloves. Others scrambled to stock up on food and water. But some scrambled to find a way to help others.

Liz Bernich and Gina McGuire, both of New Jersey, knew they wanted to do something to help out when the pandemic began.

That’s when they got the idea to create FLAG, which stands for Front Line Appreciation Group.

FLAG is a grassroots effort created to feed, and show appreciation for, front line workers while helping local businesses at the same time. Donations are collected and the funds are then used to purchase meals from local restaurants. The meals are delivered to medical workers, firefighters and police who risk their lives to save others during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Just about every Friday we delivered to a different fire station for Fire Station Fridays!

FLAG has gone on to become a nationwide movement with more than 100 chapters of independent, community-based organizations, one of which I started here in Kansas City.

I personally want to thank so many Mills Farm homeowners who have helped me make this initiative a reality here in KC. From the article Dr. Michael Prater shared with us a few months ago in the May issue that really resonated with me to the wonderful KC Strong signs that Joe and Laura Crudo created—like so many in Mills Farm, I too realized those signs would be something to help our healthcare workers know how much we appreciate their time and efforts to control the spread of COVID-19.

Beyond Easter weekend when FLAG KC started, the group grew very quickly! 100% of all the funds raised went right back to our local restaurants which provided meals to our first responders.

Over 29 different hospitals, medical centers, assisted living facilities, and fire stations received meals from our group. In addition, we delivered over 75 dozen donuts to the entire KC metro police stations throughout the entire city!

Joe & Laura Crudo’s beautiful KC Strong signs brought so much joy & comfort to many first responders and helped us raise more money.

In addition to the many wonderful donations from so many inside Mills Farm and throughout the city, we also had a few corporate sponsors as well. Special thanks to Hunt Magee, Owner of KC Curbside Glass for his donation. With his donation, we were able to deliver about 33 meals to first responders. In addition to large monetary donations, we want to recognize and thank Mary Jo Porterfield of Jo’s Cakes for donating hundreds of delicious cupcakes we provided to several assisted living facilities and home care assistant first responders.

As I mentioned, there were many different places we had meals delivered to! It was a pleasure to be able to show our gratitude and support to so many—here in Mills Farm, there are many front line workers (doctors, nurses, and PAs) risking their lives every day to put themselves out there to keep our community safe! They would work very long shifts, quarantine themselves from their families, and wear PPE items that can be cumbersome and take time to feel comfortable wearing for long hours. Thank you to all our front line workers!! It was a pleasure to deliver meals to Dr. Jessica Howelett and her group at OP Regional, Dr. Michael Prater and his group at Advent Health, Trisha Kulhman and her group at Pediatric Partners, Dr. Mike Watts and his group at Providence Medical Center, and so many more hardworking, dedicated people throughout the city!

Very little can prepare a first-time visitor for Acadia National Park. The dramatic landscapes, seaglass-littered beaches, and jagged coastline are like something out of an epic film; around every corner is another breathtaking encounter with the sea, the mountains, the wildlife (puffins, anyone?) for visitors to the park.

Slowly but surely, our country has been reopening this summer, with many families choosing to stick close to home for their travel adventures. August is a gorgeous time to explore our national parks in the Northeast, which have a lot to offer for hikers, history buffs, and beach lovers alike.

Falls, Whiteoak Canyon Falls, and Dark Hollow Falls, all accessible from Skyline Drive, a scenic, 105-mile road that runs the length of the park and comprises 75 scenic overlooks.

Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, New Jersey and Pennsylvania The Delaware Gap recreation area encompasses over 70,000 protected acres of waterfalls, streams, and forests surrounding the Delaware River. It offers a range of recreational activities, including hiking, boating, fishing, and camping, and even contains 28 miles of the Appalachian Trail! Don’t miss the magnificent water gap itself, a mile-wide chasm carved between Mount Minsi and Mount Tammany, a wonder best viewed from the overlooks along PA 611.

In closing, please do your research before planning a trip to any national park this fall; though many have fully reopened, some pandemic-related restrictions may still be in place. Happy travels!

First deeded a national park in 1919, Acadia National Park is notto-be-missed! Visitors might choose to tackle part of the over 120 miles of hiking and biking trails (including 45 miles of historic, broken-stone carriage roads), book a whale-watching cruise out of Bar Harbor, or simply take in the jaw-dropping scenery, including Cadillac Mountain, which is the highest point on the U.S. Atlantic Coast. The park’s 27-mile (43-km) Park Loop Road, which has numerous scenic stop-off points, is the easiest way to explore the park overall!

Cape Cod National Seashore, Massachusetts Cape Cod National Seashore, created in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy, is one of the more beautiful national seashores of the East Coast, jutting out into the Atlantic with its 40 miles of protected, white beaches. Visitors can enjoy saltwater fishing, touring the nearly two dozen lighthouses, swimming, and paddling on the water, as well as hiking, biking, and exploring the wild cranberry bogs off the shore.

Very little can prepare a first-time visitor for Acadia National Park. The dramatic landscapes, seaglass-littered beaches, and jagged coastline are like something out of an epic film; around every corner is another breathtaking encounter with the sea, the mountains, the wildlife (puffins, anyone?) for visitors to the park.

Slowly but surely, our country has been reopening this summer, with many families choosing to stick close to home for their travel adventures. August is a gorgeous time to explore our national parks in the Northeast, which have a lot to offer for hikers, history buffs, and beach lovers alike.

Falls, Whiteoak Canyon Falls, and Dark Hollow Falls, all accessible from Skyline Drive, a scenic, 105-mile road that runs the length of the park and comprises 75 scenic overlooks.

Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, New Jersey and Pennsylvania The Delaware Gap recreation area encompasses over 70,000 protected acres of waterfalls, streams, and forests surrounding the Delaware River. It offers a range of recreational activities, including hiking, boating, fishing, and camping, and even contains 28 miles of the Appalachian Trail! Don’t miss the magnificent water gap itself, a mile-wide chasm carved between Mount Minsi and Mount Tammany, a wonder best viewed from the overlooks along PA 611.
