ennifer EGBERT It has been almost 30 years since Minnesotaborn Jennifer Egbert moved to her adopted hometown of Boulder, and it has been a never-ending love affair lasting three decades.

In fact, she says, you could call it love at first sight.

“I remember driving over the hill into Boulder from Denver – everybody knows that hill – and watching Boulder emerge out of nowhere and it didn’t look real, it looked like a painting or a movie set or something out of a fairy tale, and I had never seen anything quite like it,” she says.

Now an award-winning luxury REALTOR®, Jennifer says the magic is still there every single day: “Almost 30 years later, I am still in awe coming over that hill and knowing that I am home.”

She originally came to Colorado for college, fell in love with the lifestyle and the community here, and never left.

She worked high-end retail and restaurant jobs during college and made a life for herself and her family in Boulder.

She lives here with her partner Sky Van Horn, and 10-and-a-half-year-old daughter James.

“I feel really protective of this town. I owe this town a lot. It has molded me in a lot of great ways and introduced me to some of the most interesting people I have ever met both personally and professionally,” she says.

It’s the lack of “pretention” that makes it unique according to Jennifer: “There’s no particular vibe, there’s no pretention among people in Boulder. The people that live here are doing very important things in the world, and they’re not here to brag about it. They’re just here to be people who are striving - and it’s not about what you have, but about what you get to do in life that matters.”

She adds that its size and close-knit community spirit drew her in from the start.

“I would call it a big small town. This is a town of 100,000 people, but it doesn’t feel this way. People have been here a long time.

They choose to stay here, there is a familiarity here in the community. It’s what I call a ‘coffee shop handshake’ kind of town. It is a definitely big size small-town mentality – but in a good way.”

Although she couldn’t imagine living outside of Boulder, there was a time when the bright lights of New York City beckoned: “I should have moved to New York in my 20s, had fun, and been poor; and then moved back here in my 30s – but that didn’t happen, so I am pretty certain that I’ll be here for the duration. I am a very fixed person and it’s a really beautiful place, so why would I ever leave? I have seen it grow through so many versions of itself in the last 30 years, and I know it is still growing from strength to strength.”

She says Boulder’s location in the middle of the country also makes it the ideal place to call home: “It’s really easy to get to the east or west coasts and even down to Mexico in a couple of hours. It’s the perfect geographical location.”

Community and especially giving back to the community is front and center of Jennifer’s life in Boulder, something she says she gets from her father.

Everyone has their favorite places to chill in Boulder, and for Jennifer Egbert, it depends on the time of day, and who she is with.

“I love so many of my go-to places in Boulder. I like to start the day at Pekoe Tea House; I love to hike Mount Sanitas with my girlfriends at the weekend; and I enjoy going for cocktails on the roof of my friend Bryan Dayton’s restaurant – Corrida. I also love working out at my partner Sky’s gym – Opex Element 6 – it’s not just a gym, but a holistic healthcare studio. They have acupuncture, massage, a huge gym that has garage doors that open to let in fresh air.

It’s truly wonderful.”

When it comes to entertainment look no further than Red Rocks Amphitheatre, which Jennifer describes as one of the most amazing music venues in the country, if not the world. She also enjoys snowboarding in Vail and Breckenridge, visiting the Denver Art Museum and The Museum of Contemporary Art. She describes them as her “fun things to do.”

“My dad was a fundraising consultant for various nonprofit organizations, and he was very altruistic and this inspired and motivated me to give back both in time and practical means whenever I can. I was on the Board of Directors and volunteered my time for the Family Learning Center as a means for continuing education and after-school help for kids in the community. It was a big deal to me to be able to get involved and spend time with these kids and discuss their futures and opportunities, I am also heavily involved with the amazing Sioux Camp as well as a number of arts, environmental and LGBTQ charities like Out Boulder and the Boulder County AIDS Project.”

After almost three decades enjoying life in Boulder, Jennifer says her priorities now have changed, thanks to her young daughter: “Now, first and foremost, I am a parent and my main interest is parenting. Before having my kid, life was all about snowboarding and going out and seeing friends, recreational and outdoor activities.

Now it’s about spending time with my kid, my partner, my family and those who are close to me.”

She says this past year of COVID-19 with its lockdown restrictions have been a blessing in disguise in one particular instance.

“The pandemic has shown me that I needed to slow down. There has been a big paradigm change in my life over the past 12 months showing me that

it is OK to slow down a little from work from time to time and spend more quality time with my family and friends and do things that really matter to me.”
