Sam Tops The Nation!

HIGH-ACHIEVING LOCAL LASS Samantha

Montgomery has added to her long list of accomplishments, recently being named Australia’s Pharmacy Student of the Year by the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia.

A fourth-year QUT Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) student, Sam was awarded the title at the national final in Sydney. The annual awards showcase the skills of outstanding pharmacy students, who are assessed in a live clinical situation on their clinical knowledge and communication skills to identify the most appropriate course of treatment and advice.

Samantha grew up in Rainbow Beach, and is a familiar face to many as she worked in the family business Ocean Breeze Seafoods during school holidays.

Ocean Breeze owner, and deservedly proud grandmother Sandy Brosnan told us:

“We are very proud of her achievement and hope this could inspire other young students to realise that they can have a great future.”

Attending James Nash State High School in Gympie, Sam served as Student Representative Council President in her final year. Graduating in 2016, she was awarded a cultural and citizenship distinction.

Also a gifted musician, Sam was the Gympie Eisteddfod Grand Champion Instrumentalist and bursary recipient in 2016 – even though she only picked up an instrument for the first time in high school! Talented Sam plays cello, trombone, French horn, bass guitar, and other minor instruments.

She took part in Eisteddfods throughout her school years, starting in Mrs Mason’s choir in Year 4 at Rainbow Beach State School.

Although clearly talented enough, Samantha chose not to pursue a career as a professional musician and became the first person in her immediate family to attend university, or work in

a health-related field. She switched degrees to pharmacy, after initially enrolling in clinical exercise physiology, also at QUT.

“I was after something a little bit different for a career in helping people out – so here I am in pharmacy,’’ Samantha said.

“I have the goal to be as diverse as I can be in the profession and give everything a go. I’d like to locum and travel Australia, become a consultant pharmacist and work in many settings to keep changing it up. That is the beauty about pharmacy – there is an endless list of things you can do with yourself.’’

Samantha said pharmacists filled a vital place within integrative healthcare, especially when it was often difficult for patients to access GP appointments.

“Patients are finding it more and more difficult to access healthcare, and they trust their community pharmacist,’’ she said.

“We can be the bridge of communication between hospitals and GPs, the hotline for patient concerns, the barrier to an adverse medicine event through intervention and problem solvers –especially in rural areas.”

What an astounding accomplishment Samantha! Your family, hometown, and region are so very proud.

UNDER COVER is an evocative Australian documentary narrated by Margot Robbie that brings to light the stories of women who are suddenly impacted by homelessness. Through this intimate lens, the film unveils a growing social issue that affects countless lives, often hidden in plain sight.

Following the documentary, we invite you to engage in a World Café setting – a unique conversational process designed to foster open dialogue, share mutual knowledge, and lead to collective action.

Wolvi Stomp Returns

THE 6TH ANNUAL Wolvi Stomp returns to the picturesque Cooloola hinterland this October. Celebrating the best of original Australian blues, roots and rock music with a stellar line up including: The Floating Bridges, Olivia Ruth, Phil Barlow Band, Chev Wilson, Darryl James, Salt and Steel, LR Marsh and many more talented, original musicians to be announced.

This small boutique licensed camping festival is all about quality music, good people, delicious food, and a laid back atmosphere in the rolling hills and hollows of Wolvi.

Held at the historic Wolvi Hall, just 40 minutes from Rainbow Beach, The Wolvi Stomp is a communityrun festival that supports maintenance and upgrades to the hall. This year’s proceeds will go towards the building of an accessible toilet and shower facility.

Scarecrow Festival!

YEEHAW! It’s time to get cracking and plan your visit to the 2023 Mary Valley Wild West Scarecrow Festival! This year the annual event is theming itself on the Wild West – you might see Wild Bill Hickok or Annie Oakley on display – and one supporter is creating Woody the cowboy for a scarecrow hunt competition. Organisers want you to track down Woody and snap a photo with him. If you share it to the Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival Facebook page using the handle #Woody, you could win $150!

Scarecrows come out of the hills on 11 September and will be on display until 2 October. A Google map will be uploaded to the Mary Valley Artslink website after judging on September 13, showing locations of all scarecrows so you can take a day trip to go scarecrow spotting in the Mary Valley.

It’s a great way to explore the hills around the Mary Valley region, drive down a country lane you haven’t seen before, and stop for lunch at a local café or pub.

The festival began in Maleny and has been held during spring almost every year since the late ‘90s.It is one of two festivals – the other is the Mary Valley Art Festivalhosted by the community group Mary Valley Artslink.

THREE ULURU YOUTH Dialogue Ambassadors gave a presentation to the public in the hall on 11 August.

Rainbow Beach is officially recognised as being on Butchulla country. Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation representative Jade Gould introduced the ambassadors who provided insight into the Yes argument for establishing The Voice to Parliament.

‘The Voice’ is the subject of a National Referendum to be held later this year (tipped to be 14 October). The referendum will be decided by a majority vote of Australians in each State and then the majority of States.

The ambassadors spoke with confidence as they respectfully addressed questions raised by the twenty or so people who attended. Their position is that, while not perfect, The Voice is the first step laid out in The Uluru Statement from the Heart to move Australia towards Constitutional recognition of First Nations people and closing the gap.

CoolaFlix Free Movie Night

TEARS AND LAUGHTER filled the hall on Saturday 12 August when the second CoolaFlix free film night was screened.

Community Pantry was the host community group this time and they chose the 1993 Disney Classic Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey. It proved to still be a big hit with young families (and some older locals) with great comments on our feedback canvas.

More than fifty people enjoyed the free movie. Some brought their own comfy chairs, pillows, and blankets.

As part of our CoolaFlix program, entry must be free so Community Pantry volunteers raised funds by selling delicious soups and sausage rolls, lollies, drinks, and ice creams.

The money raised will help to provide affordable groceries for families and those on low income.

They receive their supplies from food diversion programs with the local IGAs, Woolies, and Foodbank. They offer great value $10 food hampers every second Thursday at the hall.

HANKS TO AN Australian Government Volunteers Grant, the community centre now has an electronic cash register. That’s right - no more handwritten entries on a daily cash takings sheet!

The new Square register will make it easier for our volunteers to keep track of book sales, office services, hall hire, memberships, and donations. It will also make it simpler for them to accept card payments.The volunteers will learn a few new skills and CIRS will be able to provide a better service to customers.

It was so summery that we had shoppers turning up well before opening. In the winter months, we start at 8am. From September to May, markets open at 7am.Below: Popular market regular Rene’s Exotic Olives.

For safety reasons, we ask keen customers to wait until those start times so that the stallholders have enough time to unload, set-up, and move their vehicles off-site before pedestrians share their space.

Markets are held the second Saturday of each month and just a reminder that dogs must be on a lead at all times.

TERM 3 KICKED OFF with yet another fantastic Book Fair! Mrs Theresa Dargusch, not only a great Teacher Aide, but a woman with an amazing knowledge of all things books, started the term with our annual Book Fair.

This year’s theme was Read, Grow, Inspire – and inspire us she did! The library was transformed into a fairytale wonderland. Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks all made an appearance along with an amazing selection of books for all.

The highlight of the week was of course the dress up parade. The students and their families put in an outstanding effort on all of the costume creations. The student’s enthusiasm for Book Fair really highlights their love of reading!

Father’s Day is also just around the corner and to help celebrate all the wonderful Dads, Grandads, and Carers we have in our school

After a recent survey and Facebook poll about school uniform options, there was an overwhelming number of families who have a preference for Australian Made school uniforms. So, after much research we have sourced an Australian Made option and are expecting samples to be received shortly.

below is a brief description of the positions that will be available. If you are an experienced childcare worker or this is a career you are looking to pursue, please have a read.

Ambulance Awards and Flower Show

THE LOCAL AMBULANCE Committee

(LAC) was pleased to welcome A/ Asst Commissioner Hayley Salethorne and A/Area Director Nigel Jones to our meeting last month.

Hayley presented Service Medals to Lorraine Kay (in memory of her late mother Eunice Coombs – 40 years service), Cherie Mason – 25 years, Barbara Williams – 10 years (received by Lillian Clark on her behalf), and Mary Smith – 5 years.

Hayley also presented Emergency Service Volunteer Pins to Cassandra Rixon and Margaret Fraser. All our volunteers provide an invaluable contribution and help the LAC to continue to support the Cooloola Coast Ambulance Service with specialised equipment and other

necessities.

The LAC also uses the funds raised at our annual Flower Show in the Tin Can Bay Community Centre to help the Ambulance Service.

The show is to be held on Saturday 30 September with the doors opening at 9am and presentation to prize winners at 2pm. Flower and plant entries can be delivered to the Centre between 2pm and 5pm the previous day, Friday 29 September.

As always, a photography competition will be part of the show and entries can be left at the Tin Can Bay Fruit Store and at the Rainbow Beach Library by Monday 25 September. Entry forms for the flower, plant and photography sections will be available at various retail outlets including both libraries and can

THIS MONTH has been a repeat of the last few as we pray for no more disasters.

The doomsayers are now talking bushfires, as I guess they have to talk about something. Normally fires follow droughts, but now many parts of Australia are experiencing a

bumper season.

If there are fires most are started by arsonists, falling power lines, lightning or lack of fire mitigation work – there is plenty of that to be done with all the bushland we have (no excuses please).

Donations this month have just been to help feed the homeless in Gympie with $1000. Big thank you’s to Tin Can Bay Bakery (Arthur) and

Mitchell’s Gympie for tin donations of $125.

Big thanks also to all that donate to our bottle and can bins at 10 Tingira Close in Rainbow, the Big 4 Carlo where tourists consume heaps and for the Park’s help, The Dive centre, Watts collections, and all at Tin Can Bay that donate for Wayne.

Wayne Kerle continues his hard work for us and even though our shoulders

are completely stuffed we continue to fill the ute and trailer regularly. For the next few months we will try and consolidate our bank balance as Eugowra flood victims and Forbes where we recently donated $10,000 are going OK.

Plenty of fun for Probus

PROBIANS HAVE been enjoying fun times, with lots more planned for the rest of the year.

In July we had the pleasure of attending the Christmas in July lunch at the Cooloola Coast Bowls Club –most enjoyable!

We also attended the Presidents and Past Presidents Lunch in Gympie. There were several guest speakers including a personal trainer who had us on our feet exercising, some jokes, bush poetry, and a guitarist/singer –lots of Fun, Friendship and Fellowship.

At our August meeting Lisa Jordan from the University of the Sunshine Coast spoke to us about the pop-up health clinic to be conducted in Tin Can Bay in October. Lisa asked for information about available current health services and what they would like to see at the clinic.

We also celebrated Jo Said’s 80th birthday with a delicious black forest cake and candles. Jo loved our rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ and was appreciative of our good wishes.

On Saturday 23 September we are having lunch at Sublime Farm/ Brewery. Gympie Regional Council approved our grant application to cover 30 x $25 lunch vouchers. Anyone interested is asked to please register with Jo on 0428 762 572 or Kaye on 0421 648 129.

Old Friends and new for walkers

CONGRATULATIONS TO Larraine for wheelie walking to your first award, twenty-five occasions with the Cooloola Cove Wheelie Walkers (CCWW).

Welcome to another four new members into our CCWW Heart Foundation Walking group. Welcome Linda (Number 4), Michelle, Patty, and Sandy. Membership now totals thirty in a group which was non-existent two years ago.

It’s great to have the company of visitors from the south. Jenny and Lynne are spending several weeks with friends in Tin Can Bay. Back home they walk regularly with their own group.

Splendid to catch up with Susan and Bob Spencer for chatter and coffee after one of our recent walks in Cooloola Cove. Susan is the original Walk Organiser of ‘One Step at a Time Tin Can Bay’.

Susan and Bob are planning to join the group’s sixth birthday celebrations; Sunday lunch at the Tin Can Bay Country Club, on 10 September. Maybe some former members can join us. Please RSVP to me (Maggie, 0400 756 615).

Winter is over. Spring is in the air, so our walking groups depart half an hour earlier. Wednesdays and Saturdays depart Tin Can Bay Bakery with the early group at 6.30am, or later group at 7am. CCWW meet by 8.30am Mondays and Fridays at the bus shelter outside the Cooloola Cove Shopping Centre.

CAN BAY Community and Men’s Shed (TCBCAMS) has recently hosted several mosaic classes which have been very popular. So much so that the next class is fully booked with names being taken for a third round of classes.

In the near future, we will also be hosting copper foiling/leadlighting classes for our members in the first instance and, if this proves popular, these classes will be offered to the general public so watch this space for more information regarding this.

The Shed and its surrounds are looking and feeling great so come on down to check out our vibe and our offerings.

A big month for the Tin Can Bay RSL

AUGUST WAS a massive month for the Tin Can Bay RSL Sub Branch. Our Saturday Night Rock and Roll Extravaganza was held on 12 August and was a great success with everyone having a great time and the proceeds, amounting to $725, donated to the Kids with Cancer Foundation.

A big thank you to the organisers and our Sunday BBQ entertainers who donated their talent and time.

Next up was the Vietnam Veterans Day commemorations on the 18 August, held at Anzac Memorial Park. The Service was well attended and appreciated by veterans and the community alike.

David Grice, a Vietnam Veteran with three tours of duty during the conflict, was the guest speaker. Many attendees adjourned to the RSL Sub Branch for refreshments and remembrance after the Service. Lastly RSL volunteers attended a luncheon on the 26 August as a thanks for the contributions they make to our unique organisation.

As President Don Holland said,

“Our volunteers do a great job performing a range of tasks including maintenance, cleaning, food preparation, administration and helping implement our commemorative events like Vietnam Veteran’s Day.

COOLOOLA COAST DANCES GROUP

WE ARE SO FORTUNATE being able to have so many events to socialise at in our community.

The Goomboorian Memorial Hall is holding the monthly Old Time Country Hall dance on each 3rd Saturday of the calendar month for patrons.

The modest cost of $12 each covers the band and a lovely hot country supper for attendees.

Raffle prizes are $1 per ticket, giving patrons a huge chance to win a very tasty meat tray or a large assortment of fruit and veggies. These prizes are supporting our local businesses and giving the winner a great sense of

gratitude and pleasure knowing they have been given valued food to support their household.

The Cooloola Coast Dances Group are proud to give back to patrons who attend the dances.

Our next lesson date is Saturday 2 September from 3-5pm at the Goomboorian Hall. Practising the Carousel, the Evening 3 Step Progressive and Balmoral Blues dances. $5 each toward hall hire.

The next dance is Saturday 16 September. 7.30pm till 11.30pm. Overnight campers welcome.

WE HAVE BEEN busy with all our regular functions and the ladies will be glad to be back at Hoy. September’s Hoy on Wednesday 20th will be a yellow theme for Daffodil Day, so dress up in yellow, a prize for best dressed.

We will be giving a donation to the Cancer Council fundraiser for workplace wellness and reducing cancer risk.

In August we travelled to Murgon to attend our Division AGM, which is made up of 17 QCWA branches in Gympie/South Burnett. Wendy Ritchie was elected Division Vice President and Gabriella Field, our Branch Country Kitchen Facilitator, was elected Division Country Kitchen Coordinator Congratulations from our Branch.

Country Kitchens team buddy Alexs held a training session for Level 1 and 2 Country Kitchen Facilitators on 25 July with members Judith, Robyn, Mollie, Dawn, Rosalind, and Katrina (Miva Branch). Well done ladies – now Facilitators.

On 26 July, Alexs with assistance from Gabriella, Robyn, and Katrina, held a Hands-on Nutritional Workshop with 11 residents from Cooloola Waters Retirement Village. Recipes, cooked rainbow frittata muffins, talk by Alexs, then prepared Chicken Stir Fry, Chickpea and Zucchini Fritters and Carrot and Pineapple Slice.

We enjoyed lunch, lots of thanks from the residents. Thank you to Robyn for coordinating the Workshop, an amazing job.

Gabriella presented a Country Kitchen Interactive Showcase at Wooroolin on behalf of the South Burnett Council’s Winter Wellness Program. The recipe chosen for the attendees was the Rainbow Frittata Muffins. Great feedback.

Cook time: 30-35 minutes

½ serve per portion

Ingredients

3 bananas, mashed

3 cups rolled oats

1 apple, grated with skin on

1 pear, grated with skin on 1 cup raisins

1 ½ tablespoons crystalised ginger, finely chopped

2 tablespoons almonds, finely chopped

Method

PREHEAT oven to 170°C and line a slice tin with baking paper, or lightly spray a 16-hole snack bar mould with oil.

MIX the bananas with the oats in a large bowl.

ADD remaining ingredients and mix well then pour into slice tin or snack bar mould.

BAKE for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown on the outside.

20 Must See and Dos

Patrolled Beach

Swim in the flags in front of the Surf Lifesaving tower. Walk via the steps or walkway near the lookout and surf club, or drive onto Griffin Esplanade. 4WD beach access begins here.

Coloured Sands

Visit the patrolled beach, near the surf tower or the lookout to see the 70 plus colours in our cliffs. From town, walk south 1km along the beach - for best colours 4WD or tour a further 9km. Remember it is a gazetted road.

Carlo Sand Blow

Park at the top of Cooloola Drive, and walk 600m up from the car park or bushwalk about 2km from the National Parks Office for spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point, Tin Can Bay Inlet and hang gliders.

Poona Lake

Drive to Bymien Picnic Area (2WD) via 3km gravel on the Freshwater Road, (off Rainbow Beach Road). It’s a 40 minute walk to reach the cool waters of Lake Poona through beautiful rainforest and carrol (grey myrtle) scrub.

Searys Creek

Only 7km from town towards Gympie, with 2 waterholes, boardwalks, bridges and history – do read the sign and spot the creatures. Always cool on the hottest of days.

Rainbow Beach Headland

A look out, a viewing platform, 2 playgrounds, a skatepark, BBQs and picnic facilities. See the whales from here in season and watch the surfers out the front. Take a photo at the Cherry Venture propeller.

Double Island Point

Access via the 4WD only Great Beach Drive or Freshwater Track. See dolphins, whales (seasonal), manta rays, turtles and walk up to our historic lighthouse. It has the longest break in Australia -when the swell lines up.

Mudlo Rocks

Wander here at low tide, play in rock pools and watch 4WDs navigate any exposed rocks. ALWAYS check conditions and ask locals before you 4WD - it is not always safe, even close to low tide.

Middle Rock

When tides and conditions allow, the walk to Middle Rock and back is a beautiful way to check out the Coloured Sands. From here, vehicle permits are required and dogs are prohibited.

Inskip Point

This peninsula is the gateway to Fraser Island, a favourite fishing spot and pet friendly camping grounds for generations. Only 15 minutes drive (2WD) from Rainbow Beach.

Freshwater Picnic Area

Walk to and swim in nearby Freshwater Lake, picnic or BBQ at the beautiful shady day-use area, found before Freshwater Road reaches Teewah Beach. 4WD only.

Tin Can Bay Foreshore

Walk 4km from Crab Creek to Norman Point, over picturesque bridges, signage of flora and fauna, through mangroves, playgrounds and outdoor gyms. It is mostly flat and very safe for children on wheels. Look out for 137 species of birds.

Tin Can

Bay Wildflower Walk

Known for spectacular wildflower species, access this trail from the corner of Emperor St and Oyster Parade. Best in late winter and early spring.

Boat Ramps

You can launch your boat at Norman Point and Crab Creek in Tin Can Bay or Carlo Point and Bullock Point near Rainbow Beach. All except Bullock Point offer toilet and scenic picnic facilities.

Feed Wild Dolphins at Norman Point

Arrive from 7am, after feeding (fees apply), the dolphins leave for another day. A picturesque peninsula with public pool, playground, sailing, boat ramp and pontoon and picnic facilities.

Carlo Point

For spectacular sunsets over the water, take a cheese platter or fish and chips and watch the day’s end. This favourite fishing spot is only 3 km from Rainbow Beach.

Great Sandy Strait

If you love the wonderful peace and relaxation of sailing or cruising, the sheltered waters around Tin Can Bay are for you. You may see dugong, turtles, dolphins in this section of the Great Sandy Marine Park.

Fraser and Cooloola Great Walks

A 90 km trail showcases natural and cultural features of the world’s largest sand island between Dilli Village and Happy Valley. Or trek 102 km from Noosa to Rainbow Beach through sandblows, past lakes and spectacular views.

Fraser Island K’gari

World heritage listed, K’gari has over 40 lakes, rainforests, sand dunes, wildlife, four wheel driving and fishing! Take a 1 or 2 day tour, hire a 4WD or take your own. Cross the barge at Inskip Point, permits are online or at the Parks Office.

Gympie Eisteddfod: Instrumental Band – 1st Place

They were a small band but they made a big sound, securing the top spot in the recent Gympie District Eisteddfod.

The Eisteddfod, held on 31 July, saw the Tin Can Bay Instrumental Band leave a huge impact on the adjudicator as they performed with steadfast focus and confidence.

The standard of performance was very high across the board and showcased the talents of seven competing schools from as far north as Hervey Bay and as far south as the Mary Valley.

Upon their victory, music teacher, Mr Tim Berry expressed his pride in the students’ dedication and performance, stating, “The Tin Can Bay students had their work cut out for them. They practiced hard in the lead up to the event. An amazing result realised through a fantastic effort.”

Gympie Eisteddfod: Choir – 2nd Place

After many weeks of practice and time spent perfecting songs, the school choir travelled to Gympie to perform at the Gympie Eisteddfod in the first week of August. The choir looked the part as they performed a very difficult set piece with part singing called Firefly and then a contrasting piece, Cover Me in Sunshine.

The adjudicator, Dr Daniel Jess, really enjoyed the choice of song and commented that it was styled well and resembled the original piece. There was a special mention to talented soloist Izzy Sladden who sang the ending in Cover Me in Sunshine beautifully!

The result was a reflection of the dedication, passion and hard work of Teacher Aide, Annette Bailey and the choir students.

The choir would also like to thank Mrs Cherie Mason for her time conducting and volunteering to help with our choir. Without her help we wouldn’t be able to give our students this wonderful experience.

‘For Our Elders’ – NAIDOC Day 2023

In a vibrant display of cultural diversity and unity, Tin Can Bay P-10 School celebrated NAIDOC Day in July.

Students, teachers and staff came together to pay tribute to the history and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by participating in a range of activities that encouraged a deeper understanding of First Nation culture.

Throughout the day, various

activities provided students with hands-on learning experiences consisting of exploring the engineering and design of boomerangs, face painting, boomerang painting, food sampling, skill games and boomerang throwing.

The day concluded with an entertaining performance by Didgeribone.

THIS MONTH AT Tin Can Bay Country Club Golf Club saw major progression in our ongoing irrigation upgrade project. With minimal disruption we now have half of the front nine holes ready to go. Hopefully we will have the eighth green and sixth hole also up and running by the time this goes to print.

Greens Superintendent Craig Clarke has also scheduled annual course renovations to be carried out over the 25–27 October period in order to keep our course in tip-top condition.

Resident Golf Professional James Taylor has given me the goss about our juniors’ program. In early August we had 30 children from the Rainbow Beach Learning Community come to Tin Can Bay for a Come & Try Golf Day as part of their daily activities. The day went well with a lot of the children showing interest.

Youngsters thrived with an hour of golf activities including iron strokes on the range, driving woods in the nets, and putting on the greens, followed by a sausage sizzle for all children and parents.

Sailors shake out cobwebs

THE SAILING SEASON has started!

With predicted NW winds, the course was set but by the time the boats reached the start line a steady NE had set in causing problems for the start boat crew, having to change the courses sailed.

This race day consisted of shakedown sprints. Shaking out the cobwebs and having several back to back short races so that sailors could practise their starts. The usual motley crew were out there and we also had the return of the Flying Fifteen ‘Stir fry’ with a new crew on their maiden voyage in racing.

Sailing in close quarters with boats of different classes can be challenging and there were a few close calls. At the end of the day with a cold drink and Beth’s tasty BBQ all was right with the world!

Sub-Juniors are playing every Sunday at 11.30am (and altered where necessary) with an 11am registration time. Coaching will be included for the subjuniors starting mid-late August. In the last issue of this publication, I asked you all to stay tuned as our Masters Pennants Team had qualified for a semi-final in the Sunshine Coast competition. It seems, unfortunately, that our men went down 4 ½ to 2 ½ to the men from Mt Coolum.

It was a great effort put in by our own Magnificent Seven so we congratulate them on this season and wish them well for the next. Mt Coolum went on to meet Caloundra in the final and Caloundra won the series 5 to 2.

We recently held a ‘Driving Domestic Violence Away’ charity golf day with all proceeds going to children who are victims of domestic violence in the form of Christmas presents this year. Just a bit of ho, ho, ho when needed.

The spicy or just tasty, meaty or vegetarian nachos, tacos, chalupas, and burritos were enjoyed hugely by all who came. All left, as the Mexican saying goes, ‘A barriga llena, corazón contento’ with a full belly and a happy heart.

According to Brad Robb, our TCB Country Club manager and an organiser of the event, it was a very successful day with a field of 77 players. Tin Can Bay Tennis Club broadening its horizons

WELCOME TO tennis in Tin Can Bay and the Cooloola Coast. Of recent times the club has picked up a gear and is now actively pursuing ways to improve the overall experience of belonging to a friendly and vibrant tennis club.

There is a fresh approach afoot which is seeing us open up to new and exciting possibilities for the enjoyment of those in our extended area, not just in Tin Can Bay.

One such successful endeavour is the annual Tiny Towns Tennis Tournament which is only into its third year.

Founded by Darryl ‘Daz’ Gauld of Team Rainbow Beach fame and hosted by the Tin Can Bay Tennis Club at our Whiting Street courts, the Tournament is all about bringing small regional tennis clubs together to compete in a one-day event where it’s all about the fun, comradery and inclusiveness of the sport of tennis.

The recently completed 2023 Tennis Clubs vs Tennis Clubs event attracted large numbers of spectators and a record number of participating clubs.

According to Club President Ian ‘V-Man’ Stevens (so nicknamed because his power volleys will usually send balls into the next suburb) the Tournament has been the catalyst for attracting new regular players from Rainbow Beach and Poona as well as from other further away locations.

“We have some great players from Rainbow Beach and Poona who pop in to join us from time to time now. Even one or two come all the way from Gympie,” Ian said.

“It is always a thrill for our Club when new players turn up to have some fun on the courts. Mind you, I sometimes think they’re only here for the free tea, coffee and yummy biscuits” he jokingly added.

Cooloola Coast Little Athletics

FAMILY FUN AND fitness is the motto of Little Athletics and the Cooloola Coast Centre welcomes all to participate in casual skillsbased training with a little competition against personal bests. The track and field events incorporate core development for everyday life as well as teaching confidence.

Training is held from 2.30pm on Saturdays in Tin Can Bay and the season runs from October to the end of March. There will be a come and try day at the start of Term 4 so keep an eye out for updates.

The Cooloola Coast Little Athletics Centre is registered to accept Fair Play vouchers so make sure you apply if eligible as Round 9 closes on 4 October 2023.

Coaches and helpers are key to keeping the Centre running so if you are interested in lending a hand to keeping the kids active or would like to know more, then send a message on the Cooloola Coast Little Athletics Facebook page, email ccla2014@outlook.com, or call Jess on 0411 218 254.

The Tournament was played on the Club’s new synthetic grass surface, to the approval of those competing. The new surface, similar to the previous, provides a substantially more comfortable and less impacting under-foot experience than typical hard courts, yet still delivers superb Tournamentstandard bounce and speed.

The Tin Can Bay Tennis Club warmly welcomes both visitors and locals of the Cooloola Coast for a hit during one of our playing session times listed here. It doesn’t matter how good or otherwise you play the game, the idea is to get out on the court and have some enjoyable healthy fun with likeminded people … and that’s what our humble little tennis club is all about.

Ladies fill the Greens

So good to see full greens for the Tin Can Bay Ladies Carnival. Some very competitive games were played, with the Andersen Family winning the day. Thank you to all who supported either playing or one of the numerous other tasks it takes for a successful carnival.

Our newer players stepped up, having an experience they will not forget. I can still remember my first big carnival 12 years ago. To all members who helped to improve and prepare the greens a huge thank you, your efforts have been noted and appreciated.

Our pennants seasons are nearly over with only one win, the mens first round. Remember guys, all our players are Tin Can Bay players and we are building a great rapport within the club – it will get better.

Once again Barefoot Bowls was a hoot –thanks to the volunteers for their efforts.

Upcoming events: barefoot bowls, final pennants games, Mens October Carnival, Ladies September Invitation Day, Ladies Palliative Care Support day in October.

THERE HAS BEEN a bit happening at the club. We’ve continued with our Master Caster competition at our month-end competition social and award presentation.

By the time this article is published we will have held our second Big Squid Week competition, following on from the successful event in July. There were plenty of squid around as well as some cuttlefish, and some good-sized ones among them.

The winner of the July squid competition was Jim George, which makes it three months in a row he has taken out a prize in the monthly competition! Thank you to The Chandlery Bait & Tackle for providing the Squid Jigs as prizes.

Since writing last month’s article the River Heads Fishing Club had a threeday event in Tin Can Bay.

We were able to catch up with their members at our clubhouse for a very sociable BBQ, where several tall tales were told, and a good time was had by all. Thanks to the Tin Can Bay Newsagency for supplying the prizes for our lucky door prizes.

The Cedric Byrne Memorial Cup

– 9 & 10 September 2023

An interclub competition will be held in idyllic Rainbow Beach over the second weekend in September. The competition caters to inshore and offshore fisherman and encourages clubs to work as a team sharing information and bonding in the process.

September generally provides stable weather with cooler temps and bright sunny days, not to mention exceptional fishing inshore, offshore, and along the surf beaches.

Participating clubs will meet at the Competition Briefing held on the Friday evening over drinks and dinner, at the Deck @ Sea Salt, to discuss current conditions and fishing reports.

Competition kicking off with an honour start on the Saturday morning at 4am.

Weigh-in is held at the Deck @ Sea Salt on Sunday 10 September commencing at 1pm, where each participating club’s top 10 points scorers will be tallied to determine each club’s total aggregate score for the weekend.

The Cedric Byrne Memorial Cup, a perpetual trophy, will be presented recognising the winning club as custodians until next year’s contest.

Why the Cedric Byrne Memorial Cup?

Cedric was an inspirational club and competition fisherman and founding member of Rainbow Beach Amateur Anglers (RBAA). A true fisherman and gentleman, he achieved more than most ever will in competition circles.

Although throughout his life he dabbled in the offshore scene he definitely made his mark by dominating the surf beaches and was well known as an expert tailor fisherman.

The memorial cup is awarded in his honour each year to the highest points scoring club. As custodians, the winning club will hold the cup until next year’s competition.

The cup signifies the effort, patience, and skill it takes to win.

Awareness Month Topics – september

Prostate Cancer

SEPTEMBER IS International Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia is asking Australia to get involved in helping create awareness, and raise much needed funds in the fight against prostate cancer.

You can help love go the distance this September by signing up for The Long Run. Choose to run, walk or ride 72km for Australian men with prostate cancer.

Why 72km you ask? Sadly, 1 in 5 men will develop anxiety or depression as a result of their diagnosis, yet 72% of men will not seek help for it. Your involvement can make a life-changing difference for men impacted by the disease in your community ensuring these men are supported for the long run.

Some facts about prostate

cancer:

• Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian men, with about 18,000 diagnoses each year

• More than 3300 Australian men die from prostate cancer each year

• Prostate cancer has one of the highest survival rates of all cancers, with 95% of men likely to survive five years or more.

Could you be at risk?

There are two proven risk factors that may increase the chance of developing prostate cancer:

• Age – the risk of developing prostate cancer increases with age. The risk of getting prostate cancer by the age of 75 is 1 in 7 men. By the age of 85, this increases to 1 in 6 men

• Family history – you have a higher chance of developing prostate cancer if you have a father, brother or son who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. The risk increases again if more than one close relative has prostate cancer. Risks are also higher for men whose relatives were diagnosed when young. A family history of other cancers, like breast and ovarian cancers, may also increase your risk of getting prostate cancer.

What is prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer happens when abnormal cells develop and grow in the prostate. These abnormal cells can continue to multiply in an uncontrolled way and sometimes spread outside the prostate into nearby or distant parts of the body.

In most men, prostate cancer is a slow growing disease and if it stays inside the prostate gland and grows slowly, it may never cause a problem.

However, in some men the cancer may grow more quickly and can cause problems that can impact on their life expectancy.

When the cancer cells spread outside of the prostate to other parts of the body, it is known as advanced or metastatic prostate cancer.

What are the symptoms of prostate cancer?

In the early stages of prostate cancer there may be no symptoms. In the later stages, some symptoms may include:

• Feeling the frequent or sudden need to urinate

• Finding it difficult to urinate (eg: trouble starting or not being able to urinate when the feeling is there or poor urine flow)

• Discomfort when urinating

• Finding blood in urine or semen

• Pain in the lower back, upper thighs, or hips.

Many of these symptoms are common although they may not mean you have prostate cancer. Of course, if you experience any of these symptoms it is important to speak to your Doctor.

How is prostate cancer diagnosed?

A Doctor will usually do a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test and may do a digital rectal exam (DRE) and/or organise an MRI scan to check the health of the prostate. If these tests indicate a possibility of prostate cancer you may require a biopsy.

A biopsy is the only way to make a definitive diagnosis of prostate cancer.

How is prostate cancer treated?

There are many different treatments available for prostate cancer. The type of treatment given will depend on your PSA result, the grade and stage of your cancer (how fast it is growing and how far it has spread outside of the prostate), your symptoms, your overall health and your personal preferences.

If there is a low risk that your prostate cancer will cause you harm, you may be offered Active Surveillance. This involves regular testing to check for any changes to the cancer. If the cancer changes, you may require treatment.

If your cancer is higher risk, you will be offered treatment. Different treatments come with differing side effects, which may include urinary problems, erection and ejaculation problems, bowel problems, fatigue, depression and anxiety.

You may need to meet with several different cancer specialists such as a urologist, radiation oncologist and/ or medical oncologist to discuss your treatment options.

Getting past prostate cancer stigma.

Let’s get real for a minute. Many men experience shame as a result of their prostate cancer diagnosis. Why? There is no concrete answer to this, objectively prostate cancer is no more cause for shame than blood cancer or brain cancer.

But if we look at prostate cancer objectively, we can begin to unravel the stigma that, if left unchecked, can be responsible for the death of men from prostate cancer.

The most common stigma surrounding prostate cancer begins with testing for the disease. A PSA blood test is simple enough, but your Doctor may also recommend a digital rectal exam (DRE) as part of getting tested for prostate cancer.

The taboo speaks for itself, and it is understandable that men may not be keen to undergo the procedure, but a DRE takes only a few minutes and could provide key information to your provider to help assess your risk of prostate cancer.

Having a DRE at the appropriate age puts you in the class of men who are smart enough to put your health above your ego, and there is zero shame in belonging to that group.

Men over 50, or 40 with a family history of prostate cancer, should talk with their Doctor about testing for prostate cancer as part of their regular health check-up.

Gympie Regional Council is in the process of collecting information from our community and business to demonstrate that our region should be recognised as a Nature Based Destination!

Our national parks, reserves, nature, and scenery are significant to our region as they provide nature focused experiences for visitors and residents, now and into the future. The challenge for our region is to provide meaningful experiences within our natural areas, while ensuring that important features and values are appropriately recognised, managed and enhanced.

To address this challenge, Council has engaged with Ecotourism Australia to progress a region-wide program of work to achieve ecocertification for our region (the Gympie LGA) as a Nature Based Destination.

Part of this process is engagement with the community and your views on the important natural values and features of the local area and how important provision of nature focused experiences and also protection and enhancement of natural areas is needed. Survey is open to 22 October and can be accessed via the QR code.

Face to face drop in sessions are also being held during the month of September and officers will be on the Cooloola Coast in Rainbow Beach

on Tuesday 12 September from 9am-11am at the Community Hall and in Tin Can Bay on Wednesday 13 September from 1pm-3pm at the Library.

Biosecurity Plan Feedback

The Gympie Regional Council Biosecurity Plan provides the framework as to how all landowners meet their obligations to reduce biosecurity risks associated with invasive plants and animals (often referred to as weeds and pest animals).

Council wants to hear from you to ensure the management approaches provided in the new plan reflect the needs and requirements of the community.

Take a look at the draft documents then complete the survey by jumping on the council website under Council/Publications & Policies/ Strategy Reports/Draft Biosecurity Plan and Companion Document (2023 – 2028).

Water Fill Station

The water fill station and dump point are remaining at the Clarkson Drive site and have been temporarily out of action while upgrades occur.

The project scope includes decommissioning of the existing services, installation of new coin and card operated water fill points (but no tanker access), a new dump point with lid, updated signage and a new colorbond fence.

Works are scheduled to be completed on time for the September school holidays.

THERE REALLY is little to rival the beauty of a male rose robin. With a gorgeous splash of deep, dark pink on its chest, and a grey head, it’s a colour combination that stuns and delights.

It can be spotted east or south of the Great Dividing Range, from Queensland through to southeastern South Australia.

Keep an eye out for the flash of colour in wet sclerophyll forest and rainforest, in gullies and valleys.

The rose robin dines predominately on insects and spiders, which it catches whilst flying.

Come time to breed, the nest is a deep cup made of moss and fern tucked in the fork of a large tree, with usually two or three eggs laid.

AUGUST HAS BEEN a month of excursions for the children at the Learning Community who have been blessed by the generosity of locals and accessibility to some of the great attractions in our area.

The Tin Can Bay Golf Club ran a fabulous morning recently where our young people of all ages and abilities were able to practice their golfing skills under the watchful eye of James, resident pro golfer and other instructors from the Club. A couple of the young ones with some natural ability caught their eye and parents were encouraged to sign them up to the youth program that the Club is running for the rest of the year.

After an hour or so of hard work honing their skills, they were treated to a sausage sizzle which was a hit.

A week later, families from the Gympie Learning Community and Rainbow Beach Learning Community joined together to enjoy fishing at Norman Point and a cruise around the inlet with Dolphin Cruises.

We were also privileged to have a tour of Lee’s Fisheries with Lisa sharing her wealth of information about the fish and crustaceans that live in our part of the ocean. Lee’s Fisheries started back in the 1950s and have played an important role in the area providing jobs and fresh fish for locals to purchase.

Linda Tabe from Cooloola Coastcare, who helped to organise Wildflowering Cooloola 2023 that took place over the weekend of 26 & 27 August, led the Learning Community children on a short walk where she shared her love and knowledge of the wildflowers that grow in profusion in the bush surrounding Rainbow Beach during August and September.

The Cooloola Wildflowers & Walks Booklet featuring photos of local wildflowers and details of trails in the area is available from the Community Centre office, the Post Office and Parks & Wildlife office for $5. The children were excited to find many tiny Flying

Duck Orchids and other wildflowers featured in the booklet along the walk near the Rainbow Beach tip gates.

We enjoyed a visit from Councillor Jess Milne of the Gympie Council who helped us understand the role that local government plays in our community and how we can be involved in future planning and Cindy from Hartbeat Training in Gympie instructed us on the basics of first aid – you never know when it might be needed!

Our Cooloola Coast Guide for Families is taking shape under the leadership of Kerry and Tyla that will highlight the best places to visit and activities in the area from a child’s or family’s point of view. Rainbow Beach Community News will be sponsoring this project and providing much-needed advice with regards to content, layout, and printing.

2023 Community Bush Dance –Saturday 16 September starting at 5pm!

You may have seen some shadylooking scarecrows around town who are advertising the 2023 Community Bush Dance which is happening at the Community Centre on Saturday 16 September, featuring Flashjack who helped make last year’s event a wonderful night for young and old.

Dancing with band members calling out the different moves will happen between 6 & 8pm, with hot and cold food available from 5pm and a delicious supper from 8 to 9pm. Tickets are available from the Community Centre office at $40 for a family, $15 for adults and $10 for children or from Tyla by calling 0432 651 722. Grazing platters will also be available and need to be preordered from Tyla with platters for 2-3 people costing $25 and platters for 4-6 people costing $35. We would love to see you there!

Community Pantry

The August Coolaflix night at the Rainbow Beach Community Centre

supporting the Community Pantry was a great success with around 70 people in attendance.

The featured movie was ‘Homeward Bound – the Incredible Journey’ released in 1993 and voted as one of the best family movies ever, featuring the voice of Michael J Fox as Chance and Sally Field as Sassy the cat. There was not a dry eye as the animals were reunited with their owners in the final moments. Thank you to Fiona and Sheryl who organised the evening and ensured that it ran smoothly.

The Community Pantry continues to distribute around 50 hampers each fortnight which are available to Cooloola Cove, Tin Can Bay, and Rainbow Beach residents for $10 and are worth between $50-$60 – a pension or healthcare card is not required. Flyers with details of dates that the hampers are available and contact details can be sourced from the Tin Can Bay Centrelink office, the Rainbow Beach Community Centre

and the Tin Can Bay Library.

The Centrelink office also has a number of vouchers available for local families or singles who are genuinely struggling to receive a hamper freeof-charge. Hampers must be preordered by calling 0413 135 867 and can be delivered if recipients are unable to drive to Rainbow Beach themselves. Pindari Life Ltd, a local charity based in Gympie, provides the pantry with governance and support.

Regular items include fresh fruit, veggies, and pantry staples such as cereal, pasta and tinned veggies from Foodbank, bread from Ed’s Bakery, and a variety of items from Woolworths Cooloola and IGA Rainbow Beach that are end of line or near their best before date.
