EDITOR’S NOTE

Enjoy the merry month of May N

OTICED anything different about the paper? We may have had a little facelift…what do you think? We hope you agree it is a fresh, modern look that suits our beachy town.

Another thing to celebrate in May is World Bee Day! We absolutely love bees here at the Rainbow News, especially our gorgeous little stingless native bees and the stunning blue banded bee.

Which is why we are always so happy to receive submissions from our readers this month we have a gorgeous story sent in by David Brice about dogs interacting with wild dolphins. Trust me, it will make you want to put Akaroa in New Zealand on your bucket list.

How does one celebrate World Bee Day..? Hmmm, good question. Does anyone local make those little bee hotels? Or maybe just skip mowing the lawn that day so the bees can enjoy the clover. Until next month

Please do feel free to send in your thoughts, photos, events, memories, etc. We really want to encourage community involvement in your paper. This is such a special area with so many incredible people - we want to shout it from the rooftops!

OWNER

Speaking of incredible people, it is that time of year when we make sure we thank the wonderful mums, stepmums, mum-like figures, pet mums, and people-who-perform-the-role-of-mum. Of course, this can be a very sad time of year for many so we are thinking of you all as well.

And our new tagline is also our mission statement: ‘Shining a light on the Cooloola Coast’. Which is exactly what this paper is for - to shine a light on all the amazing people, businesses, and events that this area has to offer and to bring a really positive focus to what happens in the whole region.

Dogs and Dolphins

David Brice

I

N THE early 1970s a wild Australian Humpback dolphin used to regularly visit the area outside the Tin Can Bay coast guard and reportedly play with a Rottweiler who would patiently wait for the dolphin to arrive. It seems probable that originally the dolphin followed one or more of the many prawn trawlers that operated out of Tin Can Bay at the time, consuming by-catch thrown overboard on return. Over time other dolphins followed in and through breeding numbers increased. It should be noted that dogs are rightfully not permitted in the Barnacles dolphin feeding area, and there was some controversy at the time of the Rottweiler and dolphin interaction as to whether it was a ‘good thing’. But it is interesting to know how some dogs interact with wild dolphins. A dog with a keen ear can hear the dolphins’ high-pitched squeaks, squeals, chirps, and whistles that elude the human ear. The dog-dolphin interaction has been proven at the Akaroa Dolphins Tourist Centre at Akaroa Harbour in New Zealand. They have a dolphinspotting dog on each of their boats and tourists not only enjoy seeing the Hector’s dolphins (the world’s smallest and rarest oceanic dolphin),

Above: Buster the miniature schnauzer on duty spotting dolphins Right: The famed Rottweiler playing with his dolphin pal in Tin Can Bay a long time ago Below right: Bird’s-eye view of English springer spaniel Albie looking at the beautiful Hector’s dolphins in Akaroa Harbour

but also the interaction between the spotterdog and the dolphins. With the spotting dogs involvement, Akaroa Dolphins has a 98 percent dolphin spotting rate on its several tourist boats. One of their dogs, Buster, a miniature schnauzer, has been a spotter-dog since the age of one. When within range of the dolphins he becomes very animated, darting back and forth across and along the deck. His excitement has propelled him accidentally overboard on a couple of occasions so his life vest is a necessity. “Our dogs don’t get in the water but all become animated when the dolphins are near,” said Julia Waghorn of Akaroa Dolphins. “The photos of the Rottweiler (in Tin Can Bay) are incredible!” Any Tin Can Bay ‘old timers’ have any more info to add to this interesting interaction between species? Feel free to get in touch!

Belly Good Dance D

ID YOU know that World Belly Dance Day is held on the second Saturday in May each year and it was started to promote the idea of belly dancing as an art form? Make May the month you try out this art form with a free introductory dance session on Monday 9 May so you can shake it at home on the following Saturday. Soul from the Belly Artistic Director Jess Milne has been using the benefits of belly dance in her everyday life for over 20 years and is looking to restart casual classes to share her passion and knowledge. Jess several years ago as she continued on her belly dance journey

“Dance as the narration of a magical story; that recites on lips, illuminates imaginations and embraces the most sacred depths of souls.” – Shah Asad Rizvi

‘I started my journey exploring Middle Eastern movement with two left feet and a detachment from my inner awareness. Fast forward to today and I still have two left feet but have developed self-awareness and acceptance that has enabled me to achieve goals in life I never thought possible’ explained Jess. There will be two sessions held, the first from 1pm to 2pm and second from 5:30pm to 6:30pm. They will be held at the Emperor St Community Hall at 110 Emperor Street in Tin Can Bay. All you need to bring is a water bottle, wear comfortable clothing with free movement and have an open mind. Registration is essential as there are limited places. For more information or to register your attendance please email soulfromthebelly@ gmail.com or call/text Jess on 0411 218 254.

Celebrate turtles in May

W

ORLD Turtle Day is held annually on 23 May and was created as a yearly observance to help people celebrate and protect turtles and tortoises and their disappearing habitats around the world. We are so, so fortunate here in Rainbow Beach to have our beautiful local sea turtles nesting nearby for us to observe and protect.

Every turtle is vital to the survival of the species. TurtleCare Rainbow Beach is the message board about marine turtle sightings, nesting and hatching on Rainbow Beach and in nearby waters. Their volunteers walk the beaches looking for evidence of turtle nests to help protect them from predators. Trained turtle carers save at-risk turtle eggs by relocating nests to prevent large tides exposing the eggs.

If you aren’t a member of the TurtleCare Rainbow Beach Facebook group, you might be missing out on the news about the baby turtles from Cooloola CoastCare’s team of volunteers, so head over and join the group if you love our sea turtles.

Celebrating Our Long Haul Visitors Melissa Marie Photos Scott Humphris

They have been recorded travelling without a break the 11,000km from Alaska to New Zealand in only 8 days, flying at an average of more than 50km/h. The round-trip migration for this bird is more than 29,000km. They lose almost half of their body weight along the way, which is why our local mudflats and wetlands are so vital for the ones that choose our coast as their place to rest, recuperate and gain back their strength by feeding on our shores. World Migratory Bird Day, observed first in 2006, is recognised globally in an attempt to raise world-wide awareness of the threats faced by birds (such as urban development), their ecological importance, and the need for international cooperation to conserve them. Left: A bar-tailed godwit. Next time you spot one of these beautiful birds on the foreshore, think about how far it has travelled to be here

V

ERY FEW feats of endurance in the animal kingdom can rival the epic, awe-inspiring journeys of migratory birds. Saturday 14 May is World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD), giving us all a chance to observe and assist these majestic travellers and the habitat they so desperately need protected. Here on the Cooloola Coast we are blessed and fortunate to live close to vital wetlands and beaches that act as safe havens for an array of shorebirds such as the grey-tailed tattler, eastern curlew, bar-tailed godwit, common greenshank, terek sandpiper, Pacific golden plover, whimbrel, ruddy turnstone, grey plover, lesser sand plover, curlew sandpiper, grey plover, greater sand

plover, red-necked stint, and sharptailed sandpiper. On our doorstep, vast tidal flats adjoin the mainland areas throughout the Great Sandy Strait and on the west coast of K’gari (Fraser Island) providing important habitat for shorebirds, where numbers have been estimated to be between 35,000 in 1993 and 25,000 in 2013. Approximately a third of the Great Sandy Strait is intertidal mudflat or sandflat, the rest being mangroves, seagrass, saltmarsh, sandy spits, and forested islands, all which support a wide diversity of shorebirds. Of particular note are the astonishing bar-tailed godwits, who are the world record holders for nonstop flight.

Below: The Pacific golden plover is another shorebird that travels a long distance to visit the Cooloola Coast

Every year people take action and organise bird festivals, educational programmes, exhibitions and bird-watching excursions to draw attention, celebrate and advance the cause of these icons of the sky. This year, to shine awareness on the precarious and vulnerable nature of the survival of migratory birds, the theme for WMBD is light pollution. Artificial light is increasing globally by at least 2 per cent per year and it is known to have a negative impact on many bird species. Light pollution causes disorientation for birds when flying at night, leading to collisions into buildings, disrupts their internal clocks, and interferes with their ability to undertake longdistance migrations. As well, many vital mudflats and wetlands are under threat from plans to develop them into marinas and luxury high-rise apartments. So on Saturday 14 May, take a moment to reflect on the amazing strength and stamina of these incredible creatures, and together we can make decisions that ensure their feeding grounds remain available for them for many flights to come.

Cherryl Mossman

Maggie Travers

E

An RSL legend committed to Anzac Day Ross Carruthers

A

S THE fading notes of the Last Post linger in the morning air, Cherryl eases from ‘attention’ to ‘at ease’ - another Anzac Day is well underway. Cherryl commenced her career with the Australian Defence Force in 1962 as a 17-year-old. She had tried to enlist six months earlier, drawn by stories of her father’s Army service in World War 2, but at the last minute the recruiting officer realised her age and she was forced to wait for her next birthday to join up. Cherryl’s career with the Women’s Royal Australian Army Corps continued from 1962 until she reached the position of Acting Warrant Officer Class 2 in 1977. Through her career she worked with Recruit Training Corps,

Cherryl at work in her role as Assistant Secretary of the Tin Can Bay RSL

Armoured Corp, Military Police, and Military Hospital as Pay Sergeant before her final position as Chief Clerk, One Military District. She was posted to numerous centres including Kapooka, Puckapunyal, Manly, Yeronga, and Balcombe. Asked what she enjoyed most about her Army service, Cherryl said, ‘I loved - in fact, was addicted to - the work - the togetherness of working and socialising with people from all walks of life. I was totally supported by the male members of the Defence Force and always felt respected, never threatened.’

Anzac Day is very important to Cherryl. ‘It is all about perpetuating Anzac Day traditions to the young and community in general, without glorifying war. I love the camaraderie and bonding of Defence Force employees that continues through to today through involvement with the RSL and Anzac Day ceremonies.’ Cherryl is the current Assistant Secretary of the Tin Can Bay RSL after being Secretary from 2012 – 2015 and in 2021. Well, Cherryl, all we can say is: Thank you for your service!

ASTER Bunny Col and his wife, Walk Organiser, Kate Gregory, were helped by their visiting grandchildren to provide an Easter egg hunt for the very lucky ‘One Step at a Time Tin Can Bay’ walkers. Love that we had ‘Healthy Choice’ (hard boiled eggs) as well as chocolate eggs Big thank you to photographers Denise, Linda F, and Melissa for their photos. How great that we were able to enjoy the Cod St to Norman Point Boardwalk being open for Easter! ‘One Step at a Time Tin Can Bay’ early walking group departs from Tin Can Bay Bakery at 6.30am led by Denise and Kate, on Wednesdays and Saturdays; the later group leaves at 7am with Kristine, Bev, and myself. ‘Cooloola Cove Wheelie Walkers’ decided we now meet an hour later at 9am Mondays and Fridays at the Cooloola Cove Shopping Centre Bus Shelter on Nautilus Drive. Queries? Contact Judy Kiddle 5486 2181 or myself. Congratulations to Verna for achieving 25 walks; to Carmel, Chris, Maxine, and Mike for 50 walks; and to Linda Murphy and Peter J for your 100. Walk Yourself Happy! It’s free, fun and a great way to improve our physical, mental, social, and emotional health. Maggie Travers, Walk Organiser, 0400 756 615.

Rainbow Beach Drought Runners Report Tony Stewart - 0408 767 930

rainbowfishing@southernphone.com.au

T

HIS month we have also been known as the FloodRunners for our help to areas hit by the recent floods. Our help has mostly been in the Goomeri-Murgon area with Blaze-Aid. On my way home recently I called into the Blaze-Aid centre in Murgon where the organisation is doing a marvellous job helping to repair fencing on properties and all labour is provided by volunteers. Most of these people are RV-ers travelling around. These people have to be fed so I donated another $2000 at Murgon IGA and then $2000 at Goomeri Foodworks. The fencing job won’t be finished till October at the earliest. Our next area of concern is Mullumbimby where we are sending around $5000 in new clothing with a few other items. A wonderful donation of new clothing came from

Ray Kahl

Joan in Cooloola, then with the terrific help of Big W Gympie Manager Grant and staff helping me we put together another $2000 in new clothes and footwear. Other donors this month have again been Wayne Kerle helping with can and bottle collections, Rainbow Beach IGA with a large community chest donation, Tin Can Bay Bakery, Mitchells Fruit & Veg, Goomboorian Store, Deanne Lindh, and all others who donated to our market stalls in Rainbow and Tin Can Bay. Thank you to Jim and Marg Snee for your help also, along with the BIG4 Caravan Park at Carlo Point. We will continue to donate to Gympie homeless services and other flood areas for the next few months while farmers are having some respite from the eight year drought. Thank you all. Probus Club 2022 Changeover Luncheon Katrina van den Brenk

Val McClurg and Judy Kiddle presented a skit at the Probus changeover luncheon The Coolabay Choir performing at the Flower Show

Coolabay Choir are in Harmony

VERY Wednesday an enthusiastic group who enjoy singing, meet at the Vets’ and Community Hall in Cooloola Cove. We warm up our voices and share a few relaxing movements before starting. At the moment we are rehearsing three songs: ‘The Rose,’ ‘Gently Flows the Avon’ and a 15th Century madrigal ‘Now is the month of Maying’! Our previously learnt songs are also brought out for an airing, which keeps them fresh in our minds. Even though there are no upcoming concerts to spur us on, we look forward to invitations to sing in harmony. There are some very talented

musicians in our group and can provide emails with individual harmonies you can play at home and learn at your own pace. Music is provided and only $2 to spend each Wednesday, which pays for the hire of the hall. We welcome new members and our conductor seems very pleased with our sometimes beautiful tone. That’s what she says...anyway! If you love to sing please come and join our merry band. See you there! Further information please contact: Pam Graham 0427 180 649 or kcisf327@gmail.com

IGHLIGHT of the past month for our Probus Club was the changeover luncheon held at the Tin Can Bay Country Club. Daryl Christie passed the baton on to Cherryl Mossman who now wears the Presidential Collar. Other office bearers are: Vice President Daryl Christie, Secretary Katrina van den Brenk, Treasurer Barbara McKenzie, Welfare Officers Ann and Daryl Christie, Tour Director Arthur Leggo, and Hospitality Office Kaye Olson. Wide Bay Regional Area Liaison Officer, Pam Carlson, is always

to private development in our National Parks

Sign the Petition

The State Government is proceeding to issue private leases inside National Parks for development of private luxury accommodation. This is a massive change to what our National Parks are for, and to how they are run. It would be irreversible once begun. The Government decided on this massive change without any effective public consultation. Cooloola National Park is next in line for this private development plan: • 10 x 38mtr2 luxury units at Double Island Point! • Another 10 at Poona Lake! • How long then before it’s 20... and then 30? • How long before the public are excluded? • And how does the delicate ecology and aesthetic of Poona Lake cope with the development impacts?

Help us keep National Parks for nature and for everyone!

welcome at our functions, and she inducted the new President Cherryl and Daryl passed over the Presidential Collar. Everyone else received their badges of office. Skits organised by Judy Kiddle as entertainment at the luncheon included herself, Jo Said, Val McClurg and Katrina van den Brenk, whilst Bruce Symons is always a good joke teller. Probus is, basically, a social club. Our motto is fun, friendship and fellowship. Meetings are held on each second Monday of the month at 2.00pm at the Sandcastle Motel in Tin Can Bay. We welcome new members. Contact Cherryl on 0409 044 100 or Katrina at cooloolaprobus@gmail. com

Must See and Dos

Patrolled Beach Swim in the flags in front of the Surf Lifesaving tower. Walk via the steps or walkway near the lookout and surf club, or drive onto Griffin Esplanade. 4WD beach access begins here. Coloured Sands Visit the patrolled beach, near the surf tower or the lookout to see the 70 plus colours in our cliffs. From town, walk south 1km along the beach - for best colours 4WD or tour a further 9km. Remember it is a gazetted road. Carlo Sand Blow Park at the top of Cooloola Drive, and walk 600m up from the car park or bushwalk about 2km from the National Parks Office for spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point, Tin Can Bay Inlet and hang gliders. Poona Lake Drive to Bymien Picnic Area (2WD) via 3km gravel on the Freshwater Road, (off Rainbow Beach Road). It’s a 40 minute walk to reach the cool waters of Lake Poona through beautiful rainforest and carrol (grey myrtle) scrub. Take a photo at the Cherry Venture propeller. Double Island Point Access via the 4WD only Great Beach Drive or Freshwater Track. See dolphins, whales (seasonal), manta rays, turtles and walk up to our historic lighthouse. It has the longest break in Australia -when the swell lines up. Mudlo Rocks Wander here at low tide, play in rock pools and watch 4WDs navigate any exposed rocks. ALWAYS check conditions and ask locals before you 4WD - it is not always safe, even close to low tide.

Middle Rock When tides and conditions allow, the walk to Middle Rock and back is a beautiful way to check out the Coloured Sands. From here, vehicle permits are required and dogs are prohibited. Inskip Point This peninsula is the gateway to Fraser Island, a favourite fishing spot and pet friendly camping grounds for generations. Only 15 minutes drive (2WD) from Rainbow Beach. Freshwater Picnic Area Walk to and swim in nearby Freshwater Lake, picnic or BBQ at the beautiful shady day-use area, found before Freshwater Road reaches Teewah Beach. 4WD only. Tin Can Bay Foreshore Walk 4km from Crab Creek to Norman Point, over picturesque bridges, signage of flora and fauna, through mangroves, playgrounds and outdoor gyms. It is mostly flat and very safe for children on wheels. Look out for 137 species of birds. Tin Can Bay Wildflower Walk Known for spectacular wildflower species, access this trail from the corner of Emperor St and Oyster Parade. Best in late winter and early spring. Boat Ramps You can launch your boat at Norman Point and Crab Creek in Tin Can Bay or Carlo Point and Bullock Point near Rainbow Beach. Community Gets Involved with the Tin Can Bay Boardwalk Jess Milne

T

HE LAST stage of the Tin Can Bay Boardwalk construction was the completion of the rehabilitation planting over an area just shy of 1.6km2. Roman Contractors put the call out to the community to be involved through the Friends of the Foreshore group and well over a dozen people turned up to get their hands dirty. Over 430 plants were put in over two areas with a variety of trees, shrubs ,and understory including salt couch, shoreline purslane, pigface, New Zealand Spinach, primrose ball wattle, coastal boobialla, muttowood, pink blackwood, swamp oak, and soapy tea tree. A special guest overseer was onsite at the second planting area; a stonecurlew kept an eye on the activity The shiny new boardwalk recently built by Roman Contractors for Gympie Regional Council was opened for use just in time for the Easter holidays and has since been enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. Stretching from Cod Street to

while safely tucked under some trees. Volunteers were treated to a variety of bakery goodies and cold drinks for their efforts. The boardwalk is currently open for use however there may be interruptions with the installation of the concrete pathways to complete the project so please be mindful of works if enjoying the area. There are also wayfinding signs, node points where improved seating will be located, and improved shade opportunities through tree planting to improve the pathway experience to be installed. Take a stroll and check it out! Right: Byron was all smiles enjoying the day

Norman Point, the project now gives access for walkers with children in strollers, wheelchair users, and visitors with limited walking abilities all who are now able to enjoy our stunning foreshore.

6.2kg pearl perch caught by March competition winner Ian Nowell

The winner of our competition for March was Ian Nowell with a 68cm Pearl Perch; there were also some notable catches by Ron Cox, Derek Andrews, Mal Kay, and Tim O’Brien. As at the time of preparing this article the April competition had not yet been finalized. Despite some wet weather the club

was able to hold a couple of social events, one of which included some training. Members attended a lunch at the Tin Can Bay Country Club and a BBQ lunch/training session was held for members at our clubrooms where approximately 80 members attended.

for us to hold our annual fishing workshops for members of the public. There will be two events for Juniors, consisting of 10 places in each event and one event for Seniors with 20 places available. Once the money is in the bank, we will announce the dates and invite applications to attend. That’s it from me, if you have any queries, please feel free to contact us by email tcbfishingclub@bigpond. com or phone on 0437 242 171. Pale-headed Rosella Melissa Marie Photo by Scott Humphris

O

UR REGION has a kaleidoscope of stunning parrots to adore, and the pale-headed rosella is no slouch when it comes to displaying a magnificent array of colourful plumage. A mid-sized, broad-tailed parrot (from where it gets its latin name Platycercus adscitus), pale-headed rosellas have, unsurprisingly, a pale head and all white, or blue and white cheek patches. The underbelly is mainly blue, with red under the tail. The back is yellow with dark flecks. They can be spotted in open

forests and woodlands, as well as in parks and gardens, feeding mainly on the ground, dining on seeds and fruits of grasses, shrubs and trees, flowers, insects and their larvae. Hollows in trees are used by paleheaded rosellas as nests, which makes keeping stumps and dead trees in place in the bush so important for the survival of this species, and many others. Only the female incubates the clutch, usually five to six eggs, though a few days after hatching the father helps with feeding the young.

Melaleuca pachyphylla

HIS MONTH we highlight the Melaleuca pachyphylla [syn. Callistemon pachyphyllus]. It is commonly known as the wallum bottlebrush for the sandy, coastal heath habitat where it thrives in typical wallum conditions of wet in the wet season, dry in the dry. A shrub to 1.5m that flowers mainly in spring and autumn producing red ‘bottlebrush’ flower spikes at the end of branches. It responds to pruning and an annual fertiliser by becoming

It is fire tolerant, shooting again from the lignotuber after fire damage. The green flowering variety is known as M. pachyphylla viridis. Shrubs with ‘bottlebrush’ flowers grow extremely well in our local conditions & come in an endless variety of colours, shapes and sizes.

E HAVE had a very busy start to Term 2, which has already seen a number of key annual events and we have only been back a couple of weeks. Firstly, it was wonderful to witness so many of our students marching with the school as part of the Anzac Day Parade. I was so proud of the students for the way they represented our school, their families, and themselves. Can I also thank our committed staff for their support in ensuring our next generation understands the importance of Anzac Day. I want to give a couple of special mentions, firstly to Mrs Cherie Mason

and her choir who performed beautifully at the school and community services. I continue to be amazed at the way Mrs Mason can bring the talents of our students to the fore. Secondly, I would like to acknowledge the efforts of all of those year 5/6 students that submitted entries in this year’s Anzac Essay Competition. Archer Braunberger was voted to have been the winning entry in 2022 with an amazing essay that was both well written and insightful. Archer did a tremendous job reading his essay to those assembled at the Anzac Day service and was an absolute credit to himself, his family, and his school.

GET PREPARED FOR NATURAL DISASTERS

Photos from the recent floods in the region

Cooloola Coast Community Local Disaster Management Support Group

N

ATURAL disasters disrupt thousands of Queenslanders’ lives every year and each disaster has lasting effects to people, their property, and their possessions. Households that are well prepared before a natural disaster occurs are more resilient and are able to recover faster. The best way to minimise the disruption to you and your family’s lives, is to first understand your risk to natural disasters, look at the big picture and identify the scenarios you need to consider, and make a plan. Make your ‘WHAT-IF…’ plan today to protect what’s most important to you before the next disaster hits. Being prepared can save lives, save money and can speed up recovery. Step 1: Have a Plan Step 2: Pack Supplies Step 3: Make sure you’re covered Get Ready - https://www.getready. qld.gov.au The Gympie Regional Council Dashboard provides links to disaster management agencies & Gympie Plan - http://disaster.gympie.qld.gov. au/

Messages of Love Simply Classical

L

OVE makes the world go round, and music plays a big role in expressing its glory in all its highs and lows. We humans have, over the aeons of our development, turned it into a fairly respectable art form.

Not every song is about love though. There is music to go into battle, music for mourning, music to the glory of God, king or country; but this Simply Classical concert is about the romantic kind.

We have the usual mix of our regular performers and some new ones. Of the former, there is Helen Brereton, known to us as Aliona, with her brilliance on the violin. We hope we are forgiven for a repeat performance of Tchaikovski’s Sérénade Mélancholique, a piece of music dripping with sentiments in a very classical way. It is so beautiful and fits the chosen theme perfectly. In the same vein is the ‘Elégy for Viola’ by Glasunov, presented by Gympie girl Grace Rackemann, who is now in her fourth year of study at the Conservatorium. We were fortunate to be able to engage harpist Hayley Erin, who patrons to the recent Craft and Quilt Show in Gympie may have watched performing . The harp goes back further than most of our present day instruments, with continuous developments over thousands of years. Hayley will bring a more contemporary style to the concert. A pianist, a flautist, a poetry item, and the Cooloola Community Orchestra Strings will all contribute as

Ronnie Timperon

I

T HAS been an interesting few months since I finished up as school chaplain at Rainbow Beach School last year due to the Covid vaccination mandate. 2021 was especially meaningful for me, as I had the opportunity to come back to Rainbow Beach after an absence of three years and reconnect with students and families whilst making connections with new families. However, as the old saying goes ‘when one door closes, another one opens’ and this has been the case with the opportunity to open a Community Pantry and coordinate the Rainbow Beach Learning Community, enabling me to continue to connect with local families. Since opening the pantry, we have had more than sixty visits from over thirty families and single people who are doing it tough and genuinely need practical help. Unfortunately, a few weeks ago the Gympie Anglican Church Board decided to enforce the church-wide rule that anyone working or volunteering for the Anglican Church must be vaccinated, so I have been unable to continue operating the Community Pantry at its present location. However, on the positive side, the pantry has recently been approved as a member of Foodbank Queensland which currently works with over 300 charities across the state, including large service providers like the Salvation Army and small community groups such as ours, providing fresh produce and pantry items at a reduced cost. I would love to be able to provide locals with access to this service and have been in touch with Geoff from McClintock Transport who is willing to transport food items from Rocklea to Gympie each Monday afternoon. I will pick the food up and bring it down to Rainbow on Tuesday mornings starting on 9 May, due to the next few Mondays being public holidays. Hampers will be available between 10am and 12 noon with the pickup location still to be confirmed, which

will be advertised on Words Out Rainbow Beach in the near future. There will be a small cost of $10 per hamper to cover transport and the handling costs charged by Foodbank. If you would like to receive a hamper, please contact Ronnie on 0413 135 867. The Rainbow Beach Learning Community has continued to flourish with a group of 22 young people ranging from Prep to Grade 8 meeting at the Rainbow Beach Community Centre on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Term 2 will see the start of sewing machine lessons, dance and movement sessions, and possibly a robotics program. If you have a skill or topic of interest that you would like to pass on to these amazing young people, please contact Ronnie to discuss how you can be involved.

The Sandcastle Competition held on Wednesday 13 April provided an opportunity to bring the community together and involve families visiting the town during the holidays, with 22 teams having a wonderful time creating incredible sand sculptures on the beach north of the SLS tower. As was the case last year, the beach was full of happy families and friends who spent two hours working hard on their designs, ranging from a traditional sandcastle complete with stairs and turrets, to a mother turtle and her babies scurrying towards the ocean and everything in between. Arron from Sandshapers of Noosa spent the morning creating an incredible sleeping dragon who watched over the proceedings from his nest in the dunes. Locals and visitors taking a morning stroll along the beach were each given a token to vote for

their favourite sand creation in the People’s Choice category that was won by Team Janicky. Arron had the difficult task of judging the winners of the three categories: best sea creature (winning team Fishbones), best sandcastle (winning team Seagulls) and a miscellaneous category (winning team Sandsation). Great prizes for the winners of each category were donated by local businesses and included vouchers from the Frying Fish Cafe, Rainbow Beach Pizza, Soul Food, Rainbow Beach Learn to Surf and Creme de la Creme with toys, fishing rods and caps donated by Gympie Sportspower, the Rainbow Beach Post Office and Rainbow Beach Hardware, and Easter eggs from Rainbow Beach IGA. I would also like to thank Sam and Maureen from the Rainbow Beach Tourist Information Centre who donated a ball to every child who participated in the competition and Traveston McDonald’s who donated vouchers for the winning teams. Special thanks go to Cooloola Coast Realty, Rainbow Beach Realty, and the Rainbow Beach Community News for their assistance with finance allowing Arron from Sandshapers to be present on the day and providing supplies for the sausage sizzle. Jed Elmer, Bec Hunt, Kerry Sleath, Sarah Booth, Sandra Lindenberg, Nate Hunt, and Marcus Anderson looked after registration and the sausage sizzle, with a few others providing assistance on the day. Profits made from the Sandcastle Competition and a cake stall run at the recent Rainbow Beach Market will go towards providing activities for local homeschooling families involved in the Learning Community.

Rainbow Beach

Hello again to all in beau ful Rainbow Beach land as the roen old Covid-19 pandemic (hopefully) is swily becoming a thing of the past and while we learn to just live with it life goes back to what we now deem as “normal”. It certainly is a different world to this me last year and even a few short months ago. How good was it over the Easter holidays for town to be so busy, full of visitors, and no need for masks. Great to see everyone’s smiling faces again. Although the economic pain of not only the silly virus but now wars, floods, elec ons, and infla on is going to be felt for a long me. The best solu on for everyone is to just keep suppor ng local, patronise small businesses, and keep the money circula ng in our own community. I have to say, it really was heart-warming to see Anzac Day so well supported in this town, especially aer the past few years. Really makes you proud doesn’t it. Thanks to all who took part.

usual performance with only two wins so far and hanging around the boom half of the table. Mixed fortunes in the NRL for our Queensland teams with the Cowboys currently in fih place whilst the Broncos and Titans sit outside the top eight. But at least the Broncos are doing beer than at this point last year. In interna onal sport the NBA playoffs are in full swing so this is when basketball starts to get interes ng. No idea who to back but we know the Yanks will always put on a good show for the finals. Onwards and upwards for us all! Thanks for being such a great community, let’s keep helping each other out as much as we can and look towards a brighter future for everyone.

Now don’t forget - it is Mother’s Day on Sunday 8th of May. Definitely not worth your life if you forget about that one. But the mums (and the mum-like figures in our lives) absolutely deserve it aer all they put up with from us. Make sure you spoil her and remind her how much you appreciate her. Now onto the all-important Sport Report. In the AFL the Brisbane Lions are off to a good start to the season so far and are sing at a fairly comfortable third on the ladder at the me of wri ng with five wins. Do I bother men oning the Suns? They are doing their

Cooper showing off our range of Mother’s ay gis. rab her something nice!
