School Holidays Fun at Local Libraries

Go Plastic Free In July

EDITOR’S NOTE

Hooray for holidays! I

In case anyone is wondering, my nana had a wonderful 102nd birthday! We celebrated with a lovely lunch out with family and close friends, and she was in fine form and enjoyed herself immensely. I’m not sure if I will ever get to attend another 102nd birthday party in my life, it was pretty special.

You will notice a bit of a focus on our wonderful local schools in this issue, with some great pics from Rainbow Beach and Tin Can Bay state schools and also our incredible local Learning Community. School looks like so much fun these days, we are so lucky to have such great learning establishments in our region. It makes me wish I was a kid again.

Hands up who has had a bit of a rotten 2022 so far? I sure have and I know many others who have had a run of bad luck this year. But I like to think that is now coming to an end and it is only good things from here out for everyone for the rest of the year.

But a break from school is always welcome too! Time for the kids to relax and recharge. Our local libraries again have a great range of activities to keep them occupied these holidays, check out the details on page 8.

Wishing everyone a wonderful, safe, and enjoyable July.

We might be mid-winter right now, but spring will be here before we know it and with that comes the second annual Rainbow Beach SpringFest. This year’s event will be tinged with sadness as it is being held in celebration of the life of popular musician DidgeriStu, who sadly passed away earlier this year.

Rainbow Residents Help Rescue Whale Melissa Marie

HE CONTROVERSIAL topic of shark nets has again been a focus of concern here in our community after a whale was recently trapped off the Rainbow Beach coast. Local residents played a vital role in alerting authorities to the whale’s distress, allowing the Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol’s Marine Animal Release Team to be called in to untangle and free the animal. A Department of Agriculture and Fisheries spokesperson said specially-designed equipment was used to unpick the netting from the whale, and it was able to swim away. Many locals are concerned more

encouraged to call the 24-hour Shark Hotline on 1800 806 891. It is not the first time our wonderful community has played a pivotal role in rescuing a whale. In 2019 Rainbow Beach residents came together to save a beached baby whale by towing it back out to sea. Rescuers dug around the stranded minke whale calf, slowly moving it closer to the water as others kept it alive by collecting buckets of water. Is it time to get rid of the shark nets to keep our beautiful whales (and other marine animals) safe? Let us know your thoughts.

whales will be trapped in nets, as migration season for humpbacks is underway, during which time they travel from feeding grounds in the Southern Ocean to the warm waters of the Coral Sea to breed and give birth. It is estimated that since 2001, 82 whales have been caught up in shark nets. According to Queensland Fisheries data, two humpbacks were entangled in equipment last year, and four in 2020. Anyone who sees a whale or other marine animal caught on drumlines or shark netting is strongly

O PE N S E V E N DAYS

HE RECENT change in federal government has once again ignited the opportunity for the Cooloola section of the Great Sandy National Park to be nominated to become World Heritage listed. After decades of scientific and environmental studies, government road-blocks, and close-calls, it may just be that the political and cultural landscape is conducive for such an event to now occur. In order for a place to be added to the World Heritage List an independent assessment has to be done that demonstrates it represents outstanding natural and/or cultural heritage. The decision about which places are added to the World Heritage list is made by the International UNESCO World Heritage Committee. The overall process involves a number of complex steps, a key component being the consent of First Nations people. World Heritage listing is the highest global recognition of the significance of a place, which can bring a range of potential benefits and opportunities for the community, surrounding regions and nation. We will watch closely to see if this time our beautiful region can receive such an honour.

Rainbow Beach State School is a great place to learn! REACH FOR A RAINBOW Principal Steve Bennett

A

S WE approached the mid-year school holidays, we were busy completing our first semester units of work. We have seen students and teachers working very hard to ensure the best possible outcomes are realised for all students. We are also exploring some new and exciting experiences and planning to provide lots of engaging opportunities for the children to enjoy. These include camps, excursions, incursions and preparing for the transition of our seniors to High School and our youngest children into KindyLinQ, Kindy, and Prep. I wanted to take this opportunity to reflect on a couple of the many positives that I see at Rainbow Beach State School. I believe the success of our school is largely due to our people! Over the years we have had some truly dedicated teachers deliver learning opportunities with our young children and partner with parents to support each child’s learning. Our staff have done a remarkable job in recent years catering to the learning needs of our children and providing safe, inspiring, and holistic support to every student. Each of our staff make significant contributions to our school, students, and their families; their extra efforts can never be underestimated. For some time now, we have had a number of programs that are aimed

at supporting all children and their families through their early years of education. This partnership with parents starts prior to Prep enrolment with programs that include Playgroup, KindyLinQ, and now Kindy that have continued to grow and have provided invaluable support of young people and their families into our school community. These initiatives have offered support and guidance to families and ensured the school is well prepared

for the support the needs of the children on entry to school. We are proud of the results our school can achieve and the way we can support students in their development. Our success is made possible by the strong relationships formed with families and our shared responsibility to do whatever it takes in order for students to be successful. We are looking forward to some more exciting events being planned for Term 3 that include an incursion

Rainbow Beach centre block was made to dance and celebrate! Rainbow Beach Spring Fest

R

AINBOW BEACH Spring Fest 2022 Edition aims to pay tribute to DidgeriStu - Stuart Boga Fergie, Oka’s frontman that sadly left us in February 2022. Stu supported the launch of our roots and cultural first edition in 2021, when against all odds we gifted music lovers with a live music event. He embraced our purpose to bring the community together, by gifting the community with a cultural event for the first time in this part of Butchulla Country, bringing a very much

loved genre of music that brings like-minded people together. It is with heartfelt gratitude, admiration, and respect to this particular artist that we have put in place this year’s vision of the Rainbow Beach Spring Fest. The event is brought to you by the volunteers of the Rainbow Beach Community Centre notfor-profit association. This year we have the target to raise $5000 for Marley Fergie, Stu’s daughter, once costs are covered. This is to comply with a wish expressed to us

by the music family. We have Marley’s blessing and participation on the weekend, along with her mother Shayne. Entirely run by volunteers, this ticketed event is family and all-ages friendly. Under 16 have FREE admission, because kids should get more music in their system and their carers deserve this experience. We aim to put on a cosy event, in line with Rainbow Beach style and vibe. Location: 32 Rainbow Beach Road, Rainbow Beach. All weather event. Program: Friday 2 September from 2pm till 9pm will be the Meet & Greet opening, theme ‘Itchy Beats & Oka Treats’. A sound bath will kick start, with Adam Buchanan as spiritual musical facilitator. Then the Reggae space will be activated, where the old school Jamaican Sound System will make it impossible not to move and dance. We will be shaking our legs with strong earthy vibes, as we used to dance to the rhythm of Oka Band songs. We are doing this, because Stu’s latest project was to take the Sound System back to Country. Saturday 3 September attendees will return (same timeframe 2pm till 9pm). The stage will welcome again Aspy Jones and The Lyrical, and will have the honour to launch young promise Tilly Wright, local Aido Van de Vorst, Briannah Grace, Karl S. Williams, and Mama Kin Spender duo. Tickets available through https://events. humanitix.com/rainbow-beach-spring-fest If you wish to contribute in any way, please let us know asap.

Happy Birthday Cooloola Coast Bowls Club!

O

N SATURDAY 4 September 1991 there was a public meeting held at the Tin Can Bay Progress Hall with the purpose of forming a new bowls club. The vision was to have the club owned and managed by bowlers for the benefit of bowls in the area and into the future. Land was acquired from the then-Widgee Shire Council and with a temporary home at the Cooloola Coast Complex building, the vision for the first stage of the new bowls club was brought to fruition and 14 June 1992 saw the first green officially opened by the President of the Royal Queensland Bowls Association Mr A. Sinclair. The green was built by a dedicated voluntary workforce that battled blistering heat and torrential rain to achieve its vision and is a testament to the tenacity, determination, and dedication of the gentleman and ladies who were mostly in the 60 and 70 age bracket.

The clubhouse was built in three stages with Harry’s Hut which opened in 1993, stage 1 followed opening on Saturday 3 May 1997 and Stage 2 in 2005. On Tuesday 14 June 2022 members both past and present, supporters, and stalwarts celebrated 30 years of history at the Cooloola Coast Bowls Club with an event that had memories reminisced and many stories told. The 30-year-old club values friendship, sportsmanship, and camaraderie both on and off the green, and welcomes visitors and new members heartily.

Wild Dogs T

HE TERM ‘Wild Dog’ refers collectively to purebred dingoes, dingo hybrids, and domestic dogs that have escaped or been deliberately released. They are classed as restricted invasive species under the QLD Biosecurity Act 2014, must not be kept (if a dingo), moved, given away, sold, released into the environment, or fed. The Act requires everyone to manage the risks associated with invasive species. Genetically pure dingoes are protected on K’gari (Fraser Island) and in some large mainland National Parks, however this is not the case here in our region. There is a healthy and widespread population of wild dogs throughout the Cooloola Coast and given the extensive habitat, seeing them occasionally ‘passing through’ should not be of concern. However, if they start to hang around public spaces, residential areas, domestic pets or relying on rubbish or other food sources, they do pose a risk to public safety. They can easily develop ‘habituated behaviour’, where their fear of people is reduced and they may interact more readily

with humans and our domestic animals and this poses a safety risk to people and they may chase or attack people or pets. Councils Lands Protection and Regulatory Services branch have received many reports of wild dog sightings and some interactions in and around all three Cooloola Coast towns. Wild dog activity at this time of year is high due to their breeding season and last year’s young becoming more independent. There appears to be a few wild dogs that are frequenting the Rainbow Beach Road between Cooloola Cove and Rainbow Beach and some more on Carlo Point Road, Carlo Point. There are also a few wild dog sightings around the Tin Can Bay township, especially the Crab Creek end of town. Some locals and tourists have been mistaking the wild dogs as dumped or stray dogs. Due to the varied appearance of these animals, they can look somewhat like a domestic breed of dog. People have been feeding the wild dogs, thinking they are helping a needy animal or dumped pet. This activity is illegal and encourages further risky behaviours to develop. Keep yourself, your children and pets safe. If you are closely approached by a wild dog, ensure you: • Do not run away or turn your back – move away slowly, keeping your eye on the animal until you get to safety. • Attempt to scare the animal away with loud noises, do not encourage it to come closer. • Keep your pets in securely fenced backyards and when walking in public places, ensure they are always on a lead under your control as per Council’s Local Law requirements. Council encourages anyone that has any concerning interactions with wild dogs to report it by phoning 1300 307 800 or emailing council@ gympie.qld.gov.au

Courageous Kingstyn Rocks the Stage

C

OOLOOLA COAST Youth Activity Project (YAP) is dedicated to providing opportunities for youth confidence development. Getting onstage is one way to beat the butterflies and be bold but this wasn’t an issue for 12 year old Kingstyn Fisher from Gympie (pictured left) as he rocked along with the Music @ the Markets crew. His drive to have a go was an inspiration as he strummed some classics and a few modern riffs as well. Inspired by the likes of Slash and Jimi Hendrix, Kingstyn certainly has the guitar bug and owns both an acoustic and electric with the view to keep playing for as long as his hands will allow him. Proud mum Debbie was front and centre to cheer him on, and if you’d like to show support for Kingstyn’s efforts then head down to the Tin Can Bay RSL Markets on the 3rd Saturday of the month as he’ll definitely be back next time. Want to join him onstage? Don’t be shy, the YAP crew are there to support you so pop in anytime from 9am to 11am on market days and give it a go. Call Jess on 0411 218 254 for more information.

EAUTIFUL WEATHER drew a big crowd for our June markets. So many new stallholders came (despite the cold start) that we added another row. We also got great feedback on the talented indie songwriter Lucy Gallant. The next markets will be on 9 July from 8am till 1pm, come and enjoy a great day out, with local musician Tina Goodwin providing the live entertainment. We received numerous responses to the public consultation survey on design themes for the water tower mural. The majority want it to

reflect some aspect of our natural surrounds. Responses closed on 24 June, so we now have a brief for artists, then a selection process involving displays of proposed artwork at various points around town for further community input. All going to plan, the artwork will start in August and be completed by September. Our AGM was held on 7 June with a good roll up of members. We now have 108 members and are still growing, so we must be doing something right. President Elisa Seul was returned unopposed. A known face Fiona Hawthorne returned to become

ELL AGAIN with really no drought to speak of we have continued this month to support communities hit hard by the recent floods. Some people refer to us as FloodRunners now but we haven’t changed our registered name. At least now that we are in mid-

with food supplies from Goomeri and another $1200 into helping feed the homeless in Gympie. Many thanks to those that have donated this month: Tin Can Bay Bakery, all the bottle and can collection points and those that donate to our home bin, Mary for some lovely new blankets, and Wayne Kerle for his wonderful collections in Tin Can Bay, and for the help we get at Big 4 in Rainbow Beach.

Unfortunately I can not take food donations at present and pack hampers as I am hampered myself and look like having to have a shoulder op. So it is a matter of Visa cards and cash only. If anyone can help, our bank details are BSB 124047 A/C 22599186 (BOQ Gympie). There are no admin fees with us and donations go straight out to where it’s needed.

Defibrillators installed at Tin Can Bay RSL thanks to Community Support Ross Carruthers

C

HERYLE KOSCHEL and Lyndall Thompson only joined the Tin Can Bay RSL as social members in the past year, but they are already making their presence felt. They love the RSL facilities but noticed that there were no defibrillators available on the premises, so thought they might be able to solve the problem with the help of the local community. They approached RSL sub-branch Vice President Karl Hempstead who thought it was a great idea. Upon getting the go ahead, Cheryle and Lyndall got straight into it, designing posters to advertise the project, and then kicking off fundraising. Within two months of the plan being hatched, the RSL is excited

to announce that two defibrillators have now been installed, one in the bar area and one in the hall. The defibrillators cost $4,500 and were funded through donations from local businesses, RSL subbranch members, and the general community. Major contributors included Mike and Jenny Gray from the Sleepy Lagoon Motel, Peter and Annette Wells - owners of Noosa Tackle World, and the Tin Can Bay Country Club. A defibrillator can save someone’s life if they have a cardiac arrest. The sooner you use a defibrillator, the greater the chances of survival. As Karl said, ‘The RSL has an aging demographic. These new defibrillators have the capacity to save a life.’ Cheryle and Lyndall are excited that their idea has been implemented

Karl, Lyndall, and Cheryle are proud of the newly installed defibrillators

so quickly. ‘We think the RSL does a great job and wanted to do something for the local community. We would hate to have someone need a defibrillator and not have one on hand. We want

to thank the local businesses and community for making our fundraising efforts so easy.’ Well Karl, Lyndall, and Cheryle, we appreciate your efforts. Thank you for your service!

REAT TO have another opportunity to promote Heart Foundation Walking in our community, this time at the Meals On Wheels Open Information Day. Maybe there are two more new members as a result. I was told I was the ‘Happy-est person’ there (wearing my red Walk Yourself Happy t-shirt). Currently there are fourteen people in the ‘Cooloola Cove Wheelie Walkers’, but only three wheeling their walkers. Welcome Chris, our newest member. We meet at 9am Mondays and Fridays at the Nautilus Drive Bus Shelter outside the shopping centre. Judy Kiddle (5486 2181) organises which way we walk and roll. Sometimes it’s Creekside Esplanade, other days it’s Nautilus Drive, and then again, variations where we head. Congratulations to our CCWW Walk Organiser, Judy Kiddle for achieving her 50th walk Award Certificate and $10 voucher. Congratulations to Tina Martin for gaining her 100th walk Certificate & Heart Foundation Walking Commemorative pin plus $15 voucher. Congratulations to our 50th registered member, Susan R for your first HFW Award Certificate & $5 voucher for your 25th walk.

Our 7am walkers meet the 7.30am group along the foreshore in Tin Can Bay on Wednesdays & Saturdays

Welcome Peter, our new member of ‘One Step at a Time Tin Can Bay’. Peter and Maxine are our eleventh couple in our walking groups. There are seventeen men and twice as many women walking in the combined groups, plus 21 dogs, but we do not all get together simultaneously! Walk Yourself Happy! It’s free, fun and a great way to improve our physical, mental, social and emotional health.

E HAVE had a lot of fun this past month. The ‘Under 8s Day’ was held at the Tin Can Bay School with our Branch joining in with a QCWA Country Kitchen stall, having games and guessing the pasta in a jar, and enjoying a piece of fruit. Our members were kept busy with the children eager to take part. Fun morning. Our Craft mornings are popular, we have even had the heating on, coffee and cake always goes down well. We were joined by Lorraine who showed us ladies how to crochet a flat poppy, very easy to make and they look great - soon to be on sale. Gabriella gave a talk at the Tin Can Bay RSL on healthy eating, and Mollie gave a talk on what QCWA do.

Our ‘Sconversation’ morning tea, displays and raffles posters have gone up around town - being held 11 August for our 100 year birthday, $10.00 a head at Cathy House. Come join us for our celebration and support our wonderful organization. Craft mornings: $2.00 Wednesday 6 and 13 July, 10am at 18 Whiting Street Tin Can Bay

Hoy: $7.00 Wednesday 21 July at Cooloola Bowls Club, 9.30 for a 10am start. Enquiries: President Wendy 0412 547 043

RONWYN MCFARLANE, a long-time worker at Little Haven, spoke at our June meeting, with fund-raising Raffle Queen, Diana Harris, at her side. What a wonderful service this is to the community! A free at-home hospice service, Little Haven Palliative Care annually supports about 350 people with terminal illness in Gympie and surrounding districts. Palliative care provides for the well being and comfort of the person over the duration of his/her illness, and also supports the family and carers of the terminally ill person.

At our next meeting on 11 July, a speaker from the Gympie Regional Council will deliver a short, informal presentation about the current planning scheme project to incorporate the community’s needs and wants. Council needs to understand what is important to residents so this will be a chance to air your views and ask questions about it. Apart from our meetings and monthly morning teas together, activities in the coming months include a ferry trip to Quay Carlo; Morning Melodies at Gympie RSL and at the Brolga Theatre; celebrating Christmas in July; and joining with

other Probus Clubs for Barefoot Bowls and lunch at the Tin Can Bay Country Club in August, and also the Probus Wide Bay Friendship Concert at Maryborough RSL in September. Meetings are held on each second Monday of the month at 2.00pm at the Sandcastle Motel in Tin Can Bay. We welcome new members. Contact Cherryl on 0409 044 100 or Katrina at cooloolaprobus@gmail.com. Is Australia on the wrong track with some ecotourism? The Cooloola Great Walk Ecotourism Project rates a mention in a 19-06-2022 article by Eden Gillespie in The Guardian, “Taming the wild: Is the rise in ‘eco-accommodation’ a threat to Australia’s national parks?”. Eco? Tourism Impacts on wildlife & wildness? With biodiversity facing multiple threats, the quality of our National Parks is crucial to conservation of species & habitat. How might tourism affect the security of that higher purpose? Whilst the integrity of nature is paramount, there is also a need to consider the quality of experiencing it. How much can we reasonably alter that experience in order to make the event individually or commercially ‘convenient’. At what point do National Parks become expensive theme parks?

Dianne Dredge PhD The Tourism Co-Lab www.thetourismcolab.com.au

Regenerative Tourism Communities are pushing back against ‘Tourism’ being done to them, rather than with them and for them. Without informed community consent, development has left communities overdependent on tourism, vulnerable to crises, and with degraded natural resources. But there is another way. Dianne presents an alternative path to the ‘top-down’ decision-making that routinely ignores community needs.

H! WHAT A RAINBOW! The Cooloola Dragon Boat Club paddles towards a rainbow; just one of the spectacular sights the Cooloola Dragon Boat Club paddlers experience on their regular paddles. What a great way to start your Sunday or finish your Thursday. It is fantastic to get out on the water in a dragon boat full of enthusiastic, happy paddlers. Even with the recent spate of ultrachilly weather it is still very enjoyable. You get warm very quickly and you certainly won’t come in with icicles

hanging from your nose and ears. Just the warmth of the camaraderie is enough to keep away the chill!! At the present time, our paddlers are in training for Cooloola Dragon Boat Club Regatta to be held on the weekend of 2-3 July. This is the third Regatta in the Wide Bay series and our club has already competed in the Bundaberg and Hervey Bay Regattas so far this year. We are hoping to improve on our previous records. The two-day event sees the Wide Bay Clubs compete against each other on Saturday with teams from throughout Queensland competing against each other on Sunday. The

Cooloola Cup: A Great Weekend Despite Wind Not Playing Fair! Kay Muir

A

T LAST, the 2022 Cooloola Cup happened, sort of. Having been blown out hulls on the previous dates, the weekend of 21/22 May was forecast to have very light winds and from somewhere west. 22 boats from Melbourne to Hervey Bay registered for the event and 20 set sail. The fleet was split 50/50 into two divisions, monohulls and multihulls. The first race on the Saturday set off on a spinnaker run and returned to the creek in front of the yacht club after a tricky beat to windward. The second race was a choice to sail to Inskip or to sail to the halfway marker which many single-handers did. Sailing to the Inskip mark was a challenge as the buoy was directly into the sunlight and was difficult to see even though a safety boat was stationed nearby. Boats went in various directions hedging their bets as to whether what they saw in front of them was the mark, only to change direction and optimistically sail towards turning buoy. The wind for the return journey looked like it might drop out but little gusts kept appearing and it was a cat and mouse chase to the finish line. Overall, it was a great day’s sail.

Sunday, however, was a different story. It was a glorious Tin Can Bay winter sunny day but the wind was sucking instead of blowing. So, we waited and we waited and we waited some more with the flags on the flag pole hanging hopelessly down, for even a little zephyr to appear. The wind had other ideas so that when the decision to abandon racing was taken late morning, the sea breeze came gently in five minutes after the decision. Murphy’s Law at work. Despite the lack of sail on Sunday, everyone seemed to have a good weekend enjoying the sailing, the company, and the good food on Saturday evening by Sails restaurant at a full yacht club. Many thanks to our sponsors Billy Mitchell from Century 21 and Chris from Tin Can Bay Chandlery for their generous support in prizes. Also a

great big thanks to all the volunteers helping with the race starts and finishes and the safety boats. Much appreciated.

A wonderful weekend was had by all at the Cooloola Cup - despite the weather conspiring against us!

OR THOSE FISHOS who have been hanging out for this, the date for the next Seniors (18+) training day has now been set as Sunday 24 July. We have 20 places available for the day. See page 23 for details and how to book. As with the Juniors Days entry is free and every participant receives some great gear courtesy of funding from the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and sponsored by The Chandlery Bait and Tackle, Tin Can Bay. Our Juniors Days were booked out within a matter of days after the dates were announced, so get in quick.

On the fishing front club members have reported some good catches of winter whiting, flathead, and mud crabs in the bay. Those who fished the outside waters report metreplus cobia, mac and bluefin tuna, mulloway, and tusk fish. This next tip is courtesy of our Club Member Kevin Armstrong: ‘If you are looking for some light gear fun while also building up your bait supply. Consider using small lures around moorings, pontoons, and other similar structures.’ Kevin has caught plenty of pike using this method, especially on a late afternoon flood tide. He has also

Go Plastic Free in July P

LASTIC FREE JULY was born in 2011 from a simple idea—to refuse single-use plastic during July. The best way to reduce plastic pollution is to refuse, rethink, and reduce what we consume.

Taking part in Plastic Free July is an easy way to learn the skills to reduce and avoid the use of plastic.

2.

Avoid plastic bags

4.

Travel with your water bottle

3.

5.

6.

Did you know:

• Every year up to 13 million tonnes of plastic leak into our oceans

• The plastic we throw away can circle the earth 4 times in a single year • Disposable plastic items represent 50% of marine litter • 95% of disposable packaging is wasted

plastic

• Plastic can survive in the environment for up to 500 years

• Recycling plastic take 88% less energy than making new plastic Want to go plastic free? 1.

Drink tap water or buy glass bottles

7. 8.

Get rid of single doses and avoid buying single-dose packaging for your personal care

E’LL TAKE you to Italy for a couple of hours. Join us in this Fun(d)Raiser Event facilitated by CIRS ‘Presidente’ Elisa. Many locals have been asking her to restart the Italian Classes. This Interactive Trivia Night will be a taste of what it would be like to learn about food, culture, all things Italian with Elisa. Details: - Create a team of max 6 people and give it a name that sounds Italian - Book ASAP by paying $10 (per table) at the Community Centre office

- Extra points on the night if you dress up Gangster & Molls style or looking like an Italian - Bring cash on the night for bribes, penalties, raffles etc - There will be prizes and raffles We aim to raise funds to help the Rainbow Beach Community Centre Association cover some costs of the Rainbow Beach Spring Fest. This is a BYO evening, we will be watching what you bring though your choices will give you the chance to win bonus points! More info or to book: rainbowcommunitycirs@gmail.com Ciao e Grazie

Get yourself a travel kit and take cutlery, glasses, and dishes out with you Pick up alternative straws; use those made of glass, paper, bamboo, or steel Buy products packaged in cardboard or glass then recycle or reuse the containers

Try to get creative recycling. If you have disposable bottles to throw away, remember that you can always reuse them or even upcycle them. You just need a little bit of imagination!

Make an effort this July to reduce or eliminate your plastic use.

You can go it alone at home or join the challenge at www.plasticfreejuly. org/ to receive tips and tricks in weekly emails while being part of this global movement. SHINING A LIGHT ON THE COOLOOLA COAST

– BIRD OF THE MONTH –

Long-Billed Corella

Melissa Marie Photo by Scott Humphris

T

HE CHEEKY and gregarious longbilled corella, renowned for its ability to mimic words and whole sentences to almost perfection, is our colourful bird of the month for July. Looking a treat with its stunning 80s-inspired vibrant light blue eyeshadow, white plumage and bright red bib, the long-billed corella loves to dine on roots, seeds, corms, insects, and bulbs. Once a pair have met they remain monogamous and both sexes

share the task of building the nest, incubating the eggs, and caring for the young. Nests are usually made in decayed debris or in the hollows of large old eucalypts. A highly social bird, they are often seen foraging in large flocks on the ground and have a fondness for grassy woodlands and grasslands, but can also be sighted in urban areas.

– cooloola city farm PLANT OF THE MONTH –

X

Xerochrysum bracteatum

EROCHRYSUM bracteatum (formerly Helichrysum bracteatum) is commonly known as Paper Daisy, Strawflower or Golden Everlasting. This yellow flowering plant in the Asteraceae family native to Australia includes both annual and perennial forms. Cultivars are available in various colours from commercial seed and nursery supplies. The Latin species name bracteatum refers to the papery bracts (often mistakenly called petals) of the flower heads. It is mostly found in open woodland and forest, usually on sandy to loamy soils. Plants grow to 1m in full sun with flowering occurring in the warmer months of spring and summer. The brightly coloured flower heads attract native bees, hover flies, and small beetles thereby assisting with pollination. Cultivation: Xerochrysum bracteatum is easy to grow from both seeds and cuttings though named cultivars only grow true to colour from cuttings.

Learning Community

D

URING JUNE, participants in the Learning Community have been involved in a wide variety of activities that have added some great experiences to their homeschooling program. One of the highlights was assisting Mo Riggs, local artist and art tutor, in creating a turtle display out of recycled rubbish to raise awareness of how rubbish impacts our oceans at the World Oceans Day stand at the recent Rainbow Beach market. Curtis from the Gympie Library, who visits local schools with a fantastic robotics program, made the trip to Rainbow so that our young ones could join in the fun. Ze is helping everyone to decorate their own Rainbow Learning t-shirt and Cindy from Hartbeat Training spent a morning teaching the children about what to do in an emergency, which included everyone having a go at bandaging – with Cindy as one of the patients! Lee McCarthy from Cooloola Coast Today paid us a visit, sharing about how she started her career and her current role as a reporter, with some fascinating insights as to what is needed to make a good story. At least one young person was inspired to think they would like to become a reporter/journalist when they grow up, focusing on sport.

since 1981, they have many benefits because they: • Create a great connection between people of all ages; • Provide a fun, healthy, energetic and positive way to get exercise; • Are ideal for teaching listening skills, following instructions and working in a team and maybe best of all • You can’t bush dance and be on your device! The musical talents of band ‘Flashjack’ who played Celtic and traditional Australian music on flute, guitar, pennywhistle, banjo, lagerphone, and spoons made for a special night with many families enjoying the opportunity to get together as a community. Lucky door prizes drawn throughout the evening were donated by Bunnings, Rainbow Beach Horse Rides, Rainbow Fruit, Mo Riggs, Cooloola photographer Aimee Everson, and Mini Mosca Children’s Clothing & Gifts. It was wonderful to see all ages having fun together learning the dances and enjoying each other’s

Community Bush Dance Did you make it along to our winter Bush Dance that was held on Saturday 25 June at the Rainbow Beach Community Centre? Bush dances seem to be few and far between these days but they are still a wonderful way of bringing a community together. The old dances like ‘Strip the Willow’ and ‘Heel and Toe Polka’ are timeless and according to the Bushwackers Band who have been teaching bush dancing in primary and high schools

Due to popular demand, we are increasing the number of hampers that we provide to locals each week. For two weeks last month we were able to add watermelons to the normal pantry items that are purchased at low cost from Foodbank in Brisbane which were gratefully received. See the attached photo of my poor old Prado filled to the brim with watermelons! From the beginning of June, Rainbow Beach Transport has kindly taken over the transport of hamper

items from McClintock’s Transport in Gympie and we would like to thank Brent for his generosity in providing this service free of charge. To work in with Brent’s normal daily delivery from Gympie to Rainbow Beach, our distribution time on Thursdays has changed to 12.301.30pm in the Community Centre car park. It is lovely to see several kindhearted people buying a hamper for a neighbour or friend to show they care. Visit our Facebook page www. fa c e b o o k .c o m/Ra i n b ow -B e a c h Community-Pantry if you would like to register for a hamper that includes fresh fruit and veggies and pantry items that cost $10 but are worth between $40 & $50. Rainbow Beach

Hello again to everyone in our beau ful Rainbow Beach land. As this ar cle is printed during the mid year school holidays, I hope the town is hustling and bustling with tourists. With the beau ful winter weather, where else would you want to be? The only thing we need now is employees! And plenty of housing for locals would be a big help too. This me of year, every year, it is the same. Blue skies, flat oceans, and amazing campfires, well, depends where you are and what is allowed of course. Interna onal travel is mostly open but why would you want to bale the chaos at the airport, Covid has changed everything for the worse, much beer to explore our own spectacular backyard and get the tourist money pumping around Australia again before spending up overseas. Now the SPORTS REPORT It's great to be a Queenslander right now! We're smashing it in the NRL with the Broncos sing in fih which makes a nice change from this me last year. North Queensland couldn't let us southerners have all the glory though could they - they are in third, which is yet another notch in the Sunshine State's belt.

Well apparently, I also have to do some shop talk. It's been about a year since we put in our gourmet sec on and we hope you are all s ll loving it. We have special products you do not normally find in your typical supermarket. Both suppor ng local suppliers and interna onal lines, the fancy goodies we all try overseas. Come in the store and have a good look, and whip up some winter feasts. All in all, thank you for suppor ng local businesses, including ours. Family run and operated, locals suppor ng locals, just what IGA stands for. JULY 13 State of Origin Game III at Suncorp Stadium (can you believe it!)

Matt, Bernie, Justin, Liam & our friendly staff at the IGA

In AFL the Lions are in third at me of wri ng, imagine if we are returning to the glory days of the early 2000s with the three-in-a-row premierships, it is star ng to feel like a long me ago now that they were the ones to beat. Origin II is this Sunday and when you read this, Queensland will have taken the series 2-0. Or maybe not - I guess it is much more exci ng to give the punters one win each way before the final game, as long as we win in the end. QUEENSLANDER, QUEENSLANDER, QUEENSLANDER. In interna onal sport, the Golden State Warriors won the NBA in case anyone cares. Such a massive spectacle and the finals series seems to go on forever. But always entertaining I suppose. Would be amazing to be at a game. Wimbledon kicks off (hits off?) this month of course, won't be the same without our Ash, but s ll always worth a bit of a watch. Especially to check out the Poms version of summer - the weather seems about the same as ours right now.

Grab some ingredients for your favourite winter warmers in our popular gourmet sec on.

This is a paid adver sement and the views of the writer are not necessarily the views of the Rainbow Beach Cooloola Coast Community News owners or staff.

A big hello to all our valued customers - both local and visi ng, come and see your friendly staff at your local IGA today
