Editor’s Note

All the best for 2016 L ife is good. I am sitting on the beach, watching two of my boys on boards - there’s a breeze, but the sun is out and the surf is up. Locals and tourists are enjoying the beach.

But I am thinking about our farmers. Another load was delivered to Longreach last month - thanks to some dedicated and generous residents.

I heard the question last night, ‘what does the farmers plight have to do with us, and the businesses here on the coast?’

The answer is simply: everything.

After four years of drought, many can’t afford to leave their land, let alone put petrol in cars to sit and watch their kids enjoy the waves.

But when times are good, farmers support us - choosing Rainbow Beach and Tin Can Bay and other coastal communities to stay and play.

Farmers feed our nation, it’s a noble profession, which does

not receive enough aid from the government when times are tough.

It is heart warming to be a part of a community that cares - with members who have found ways to bring some cheer into their lives, and let them know they aren’t forgotten.

Art festival for Aussie Day weekend

Locals and visitors can enjoy viewing the 2016 Brushes by the Sea Art Festival at the Sports Club this month

AINBOW BEACH’S “Brushes by the Sea” Annual Art Festival will again be held at the Sports Club on the Australia Day weekend, January 23 to 24, 2016.

Artists from all over the Cooloola Coast have entered in sections: Acrylic, Oils, Watercolour, Photography, Quilting, Craft, Drawing and Young Artist.

Vote for the people’s choice, win a prize at the goose raffles or just sample the wine and cheese! This year, there will even be live music from The Vibe on both evenings.

The exhibition kindly supports a charity each year, with raffles, and a percentage of the artwork’s commission, donated to the Rainbow Beach P & C. So buy some local art and it helps our school students!

Aussie Day in Tin Can Bay S

INCE 2010, the TCBYC and Affiliates, the Cooloola Dragon Boat Club and Sailability, have staged an intra-club ‘Australia Day Challenge’.

Gayle Barnett from the Dragon Boat Club explains, “In short, it’s a number of fun events taking place on the shore and on the water with the three clubs ‘battling it out’ to earn points in the hope of winning the ‘prestigious’ Olive Dish Trophy!”

“There is usually a bit of bush poetry or anthem singing by some creative locals and a lot of skullduggery involved in the competition - particularly on behalf of the Yachties.”

There is a ‘friendly rivalry’ between the three clubs that makes for a fun day on January 26, and spectators are always welcomed at the Yacht Club.

Who will win the ‘impressive’ Olive Dish Trophy, fought over every Australia Day?

Breakfast starts from 7am, and you can cheer the teams on in events such as paddling kayaks, dragon boats, thong throwing, beach boules, and 303 dinghy races from 8am.

The three clubs take turns to organise the “Challenge” and this year the Yacht Club (Grottie Yachties) are hosting the 2016 Australia Day Challenge. For more details contact 5486 4014.

The Australia Day challenge is an inter-club event between three teams,TCBYC, Sailabilty TCB and the Cooloola Dragons, on 26/1/2016 at the TCBYC starting with an Aussey Breakfast from 0800. Events such as paddling Kayaks, Dragon boats, thong throwing, beach boules, and 303 Dinghy races.

Cool down with water games Kids Play is on 11am to 12.30pm Saturday and Sundays and includes water games, land games tennis, volleyball, mini soccer and more.

Rainbow Beach Holiday Program Run by the Scripture Union QLD and known as “The Tents”, they offer lots of fun for kids and youth until January 4: Morning Program 10am-noon - more like Sunday school, with games, craft, singing, some bible input time (Prep to Grade 4/5 in Lawrie Hanson park). Youth head down on the beach – cricket, volleyball etc (Grade 4/5 and up).

Afternoons 2-4pm are all in Lawrie Hanson Park. Kids will enjoy themed sessions like Wet Games on Sunday 3, Youth programs provide more chilled out opportunities to play cards, games and chat.

Make sure you come along to the evening events at the Community Hall including a Bush Dance with The Smashing Bumpkins from 7pm on December 30, Community New Years Eve Party from 5.30pm on December 31 and a Games and Trivia Night from 7pm, January 2.

ONGRATULATIONS to Rainbow residents Colette Marie Brennan and Steve Hiley, (known as Letty and Beaver) as they welcome a new daughter into the world.

Lyla Marie Hiley weighed 6lbs 10 ounces and with very long legs (they say unlike mum and dad) was 52cm in length at birth.

“She had a whopping 35cm head circumference,” said Letty, “Now, that is like her dad!”

It is no surprise that like both parents, the gorgeous little girl is also a blonde.

“She was due on 14th December but arrived at Gympie Hospital on 28th November at 01:08. She’s impatient like me. The midwives were fantastic.”

“She’s our first child and first grandchild to both families. She was a blessing, as I had an ovary removed in 2012 due to a growth, and was told it would get harder for me to conceive. We do aim to have a brother or sister for her within the next two years, fingers crossed.”

Letty is originally from the UK and Beaver is from the Sunshine Coast and now works for Rainbow Beach Adventure Company.

Juanita Vell says they have lots more variety in their tackle and crab pots in Chilly Bin’s new cabinet

E LOVE OUR fishing and we love our bait,” declared Juanita Vell.

She and Neville Tweed are well known in Rainbow Beach, not just for running the Chilly Bin, on the corner of Carlo and Karoonda Road, but also for their love of music.

Locals know the drive through shop has bulk ice and bulk bait: “It’s the only place you can buy 15kg ‘pillies’,” said Juanita.

They are excited because the Chilly Bin has a had a makeover, with new stock even introducing local prawns.

“We’ve never had grocery items before!

We have had some dresses and shorts before from Bali- but they only fit people who were size 3!” said Juanita.

“These will be quality products with better sizing. We’re going to have clothing,

T-shirts, hats, thongs, sarongs, sunglasses and towels - that sort of thing.”

They have a new custom built fishing rod holder and more fishing rods in stock.

They will add a grocery section with sunscreen, insect repellent and camping gear.

“Perfect for holiday goers - bait, tackle and towels…everything for a day out,” she added - and conveniently located on the way to Inskip or Carlo Point!

“You need to come in a check out our tiger shark jaws, and maybe if you are lucky we’ll sing you a song!”

It’s well worth the stop - for the friendly service and a serenade from talented Juanita!

Debra’s divine designs Words by Victoria McGuin

Debra Gardiner and her creations - some in copper and silver and others moulded in resin from vintage buttons, even miniatures of her daughter’s art

Michelle Gilmore met Debra Gardiner at the Rainbow Beach Markets – and found a crafty soul whose eclectic jewellery drew her eye - and her wallet!

It turns out her work is published in a national magazine and our new resident has already found a way to give back to the community.

UT HOW DID this creative find her way to Rainbow Beach?

“My husband, Michael, and I have been holidaying here for over 25 years and we always wanted to live here one day,” Debra told me. ”We bought a holiday house about 18 years ago, then two years ago we decided to take the plunge and make a complete life change.

“We left our home of 28 years in January 2015. I retired from my position as a teacher aide in Home Economics and Art at Mary MacKillop College, Nundah and Michael retired from being a registered builder.”

Debra has always been involved in creative pursuits and supplied shops in Brisbane with handcrafted items such as hand-painted silk scarves, cushions, bags and cloth dolls.

“In 2004 I decided to design patterns under my Wattlebee Designs label, as I found I didn’t have as much spare time.”

Patterns for her cloth dolls, quilts and bags are still available through her distributor -

Pattern Press in Tasmania.

Debra continued, “I love the process of designing as much as making the item. I have also developed a lovely relationship with Australian Homespun Magazine and each year I contribute a project.” The latest one will feature in the January 2016 edition.

“Saying yes to this project however made me realise how much Rainbow needed a convenient local fabric and sewing essentials supplier. I was so used to the convenience of a big city and found I had to be super organised.”

Debra now offers fat quarter bundles, needles, quilting equipment and other materials to locals and information can be found on the Wattlebee Facebook page.

All Debra and Michael’s children have continued the creative gene. Their three sons like working with their hands and their daughter Holly completed her fine arts degree this year.

“Her paintings, mainly quirky portraits and pattern, feature in some of my jewellery

work. I print them to size and set them in resin. She runs a custom cake design business ‘Cake or Death’ between work and study.”

Since coming to Rainbow Debra has developed her jewellery work, using copper, sterling silver, and mixed media such as resin and old vintage china.

“I find I’m always learning, and to a certain degree self-taught. I enjoy making resin components by taking moulds of interesting shapes and reproducing them.”

Now settled at Rainbow Beach, Debra believes an important part of finding your feet in a new community is the people you meet.

“Helping in the Rainbow Beach State School Kitchen Garden has been a wonderful experience. I’ve learnt so much about growing vegetables and setting up a viable garden design as well as being in such a warm and caring environment.

“I enjoy seeing the students’ excitement as they visit the garden and “check out” the

new additions. Anything involving shovel work or a watering can is usually a hit with the kids and they do love to help.”

Debra has also set up a Facebook Page to share garden news with the wider community - Rainbow Beach State School Kitchen Garden.

“I found the lovely ladies that work out of Top Shops. I’m looking forward to being a part of this group and whatever the future holds there. For now, I’ll also attend the Rainbow Beach and Cooloola Cove Markets.”

Debra let the Community News know a little more about her number one fan through all of this. “None of my work would be possible without Michael. He encourages me, collects materials and tools from Brisbane; builds props, sets up stalls.

“I couldn’t do it without him, and I think he deserves a mention,” she smiled.

FTER FINISHING 2015 celebrating with Santa at the Christmas party, our attention now turns to preparing for our annual swim meet on February 6, 2016.

It is a huge event for the area drawing in hundreds of competitors from across the region.

The meet is a chance for our little club to showcase its immense array of talent in the pool, and hopefully bring home a few medals!

The B grade qualifying short course meet is well known for its “Dash for Cash” and quantities of Tin Can Bay prawns! From 7 and under, the events is fun for the whole family, set on picturesque Norman Point, surrounded by The Inlet and adjacent to a playground.

If you are planning to come along - make

a weekend of it and stay in beautiful Tin Can Bay or nearby Rainbow Beach.

We wish all the very best to Lana Rogers and Wyatt Lee as they head to the Queensland Championships held at the Brisbane Aquatic centre in Brisbane. Go Crocs!

Cooloola Coast Crocs would like to say a very big thank you to the Tin Can Bay Lions Club for their generous donation of $500, which will be well spent on essential supplies and equipment for the kids.

Club nights start Tuesday January 27, 2016 at 5.30pm and meet every fortnight at Tin Can Bay pool.

UR LIFEGUARD numbers have once again swelled for the holidays, and amongst their numbers include our new long term full time lifeguard, Liam Toohey.

When I visited the Tower I was greeted

by Liam and fellow lifeguard, Paddy O’Shaughnessy.

Liam and Paddy? They joked about their Irish names, but explained more about their serious role.

“We go through rigorous training every three months for proficiency - scenarios like jet ski work board rescue work keeping sharp with skills and fitness,” said Liam.

“I sent in my resume and was shortlisted. The proficiency included 800m swim and ocean mission, first aid and general knowledge about Rainbow.

So I came up on a recon mission and picked Sam’s (Cartwright) brain!”

After working as a casual at Noosa, Liam was thrilled to accept the position, “I’m keen to dig in my heels and spend a bit of time in Rainbow.” But he’s having a difficult time finding accommodation over the busy holiday period.

If you know of a rental - please let Liam know - he is very keen to move his family, partner Georgia and a one year old - Koa up here.

Liam is thrilled with his new job and looking forward to sharing the “small country town vibe” with his family.

“It’s a really good move for me and Georgia I was casual at Noosa - this is what I want to do. This is really positive for us as a family.” Liam enthused.

“Everything is accessible here everything you need is in walking distance” Paddy agreed, and said Rainbow Beach “has a charm about it.” He grew up in

Liam is ready for a bumper holiday season, “There are five of us - myself, Paddy, Sam and brothers Curtis and Michael Forbes.

“There are four stationed here - two in the tower and two roving. The ‘carpark’ [at Double Island Point] has been busy we’re expecting to be on our toes.”

Goodbye Year

HE RAINBOW BEACH Hotel had a warm atmosphere, as the Rainbow Beach State School Year 6 graduates, their parents, and staff marked the end of their primary schooling with dinner, a surprise dance, presentation and a huge cake.

Principal, Micheal Grogan said, “It was a great evening and I would like to thank Ms. McColl, Alice, Sarah Brantz and Kylie Betteridge for organizing and decorating.

Michael also thanked Simon and Renae from the Rainbow Beach Hotel, and all of the businesses and community groups who sponsored bursaries again this year: “It allows us to provide a fitting reward to the wonderful students at our school”.

Hours slashed at Rainbow Beach Clinic

A

S WE BID farewell to Dr Dave Smith, hours have been cut at the GP practice, as the Cooloola Coast Clinic searches for more doctors.

Last month, we were advised the centre would operate three mornings a week, with a variety of doctors from the Tin Can Bay Clinic.

Decisions on the practice have serious ramifications for our town. Once a service is dropped, (or reduced with different practitioners) there is a risk that community members will look to Gympie or Maryborough for medical appointments, or worse still, they will not seek assistance at all. This could be life threatening for some residents.

I asked that they consider operating some afternoons to improve access for students and offer non-consecutive days.

I also asked that, after recruitment is successful, they consider assigning a doctor to Rainbow Beach, or that the position be advertised as part time?

As I waited in the Rainbow Beach surgery the other day, there were several calls requesting appointments within minutes.

It was 8.10am and already he was booked out for the day.

I am sure that Rainbow Beach as a community could look at other incentives to help entice a doctor here permanently.

Rainbow Beach offers an enviable lifestyle for doctors seeking work-life balance.

Michelle Gilmore spoke to owner of the practice, Dr Peter Martin to find out more.

Dr Martin advised: 1) The doctors from Tin Can Bay will be providing temporary cover at Rainbow Beach till we can contract and complete the orientation of at least one new doctor. We will endeavour to provide at least one afternoon session plus 2 morning sessions per week during this time.

2) All appointments will be reserved for Rainbow Beach residents and tourists.

3) Once we have a new doctor who is suitable to visit Rainbow Beach, that doctor will start doing several of the sessions.

4) At this time, we will consider increasing the number of sessions at Rainbow Beach. The number of sessions will be determined by the needs and level of support of Rainbow Beach residents. (Fully booked sessions = more sessions) Every Rainbow Beach resident who requests an appointment will get an

appointment that session or the next working day. Appointments can also be made up to 2 weeks in advance as at present.

5) Once our new doctor(s) have settled in, we will commence a full chronic disease management program at Rainbow Beach, which will be run by one of our nurses.

Why fewer hours?

Dr Martin explained that more than half of Dave’s patients were from Cooloola Coast and Tin Can Bay. He had eight full sessions, so they have calculated that 4 sessions a week at the most should be adequate.

“We can’t have doctors sitting over there doing nothing.” Dr Martin said.

Losing a GP will increase the workload significantly for the current GPs at Tin Can Bay. The practice manager has been aggressively recruiting, not one doctor, but two since early November.

Why is recruitment such a problem?

Dr Martin assures the Community News that he offers comparable salary packages, with the latest resources in a modern clinic.

There is also a government grant doctors receive for working in a rural area.

He explained attracting doctors is always really difficult because of our rural/ remote location. Doctor’s partners are often professional people - and it may be impossible for the spouse to find work even Gympie wouldn’t be big enough for job opportunities for some.

On a positive note, they have secured four specialists (Cardiologist, Urologist, Orthopaedic and a Gastroenterologist) to visit Tin Can Bay, which will mean significant reduced travel and waiting times for the community.

What is the after-hours procedure?

Dr Martin says to make an appointment, come over to Tin Can Bay, and the doctor can access that same information in your common data file. He says it is just a “little bit of travel - 20 minutes”, if someone is “acutely ill”.

If it is evenings or weekends, call emergency after hours on 000, to visit accident and emergency at Gympie hospital, or for non emergencies call 13 HEALTH.

Memorial Surf Classic is holding onto traditions T

HE MEMORIAL SURF classic was held by the Rainbow Beach Boardriders Club at Double Island Point.

This is an event that the community looks forward to at the end of each year, with previous members of the Boardriders attending to remember lost loved ones over the years.

Rainbow Beach may be changing, but this is something we can hold onto and keep the same.

There were great conditions for the day with the crew stating that the waves could always be bigger, but “they will do!”

With 40 entries for the day and the families there for support, we had just over 100 in attendance, ready to kick start the day with a surf.

A big thank you to the community of Rainbow beach for supporting this event.

We’ve also had donations from 7th Wave, Shell, Information Centre, Golden Breed, Sports Club, Food Works, Kylie’s Hair Salon and Buckaroo Horse Rides.

Rainbow Beach Meats contributed to the shirts, and Ed’s bakery supplied bread all year for all events.

HREE CHALLENGING, incredible, and rewarding years have come to an end for newly graduated Griffith University, Queensland College of Art student Hayley McFarlane.

Hayley has completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in art theory, with a studio stream of interdisciplinary print media.

She is a Griffith Honours College Scholar who received academic excellence awards

for all three years of study.

Hayley has also secured a full time permanent position as Gallery Assistant at the Gympie Regional Gallery.

Hayley would like to thank her lecturers and fellow students for a truly amazing experience, her staff members for fostering in her a passion for the arts, and her family and friends for their continued encouragement, support and love.

“This is our second big load of goods to go to Longreach, and hopefully not the last,” Tony told Community News.

The drought in Western Queensland has entered its fourth year and shows no sign of abating. State Government assistance has not been sufficient to provide relief to struggling farmers, and no stock and no water means no income.

“Many families will walk away with nothing. They can’t pay bills, some have committed suicide, and many are on suicide watch.”

The Drought Angels at Chinchilla and Aussie Helpers at Charleville are flat out coordinating supplies. From January 9, over 110 large semi trailer loads of hay, all of which has been donated from New South Wales with no fuel or labour costs to the drought stricken farmers.

“Many of these farming families have holidayed at Rainbow Beach over the years, and when good times return, I’m sure they will remember the help given from here and they will return. Thank you all.”

The donations include boxes of toiletries, kids toys and books, homemade fruit cake and biscuits. Christmas cakes from TCB Lion’s Club, Tony and his wife Rosie also provided plum puddings and $500 cash.

“We’ve also delivered fifteen dozen eggs, freshly baked biscuits, pumpkins and potatoes from TCB Bakery, toiletries from the Gympie Mental Health workers, and biscuits from Rainbow / Cooloola Wholesalers,” Tony said.

You can now access her fabulous and fun style at Rainbow Beach Gym on Mondays and Fridays from 5.30am to 12.30pm and Wednesdays from 8am to 12pm.

Local, Bec Hodgetts is working through a Certificate III in Fitness and is planning to finish her Certificate IV in fitness.

F YOU ARE 15 or older, why not have fun these school holidays and make some new friends - and gain your bronze medallion?

The intense 7 day live in course, held January 10 to 17, will help you attain a Bronze Medallion: Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue).

If you are aged 13 to 15 years you can enrol in a Surf Rescue Certificate and Resuscitation Award (SRC).

Throughout the week participants stay in dormitory accommodation at Rainbow Beach Surf Lifesaving Club. There will be adult supervision at all times along with experienced junior helpers.

President of Rainbow Beach SLSC, Justin Schooth said, “The Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue) is an accredited course towards your QCST (year 12), giving 4 out of a possible 20 points.

“The course is for people interested in patrolling at Rainbow Beach for this season as part of the surf lifesaving club. A minimum one season of rostered patrols is a club requirement.”

The full cost of the Bronze Medallion course is $250 including GST. This includes training manual, Cert II workbook, full patrol uniform, patrol / club cap, club togs, hi-vis safety rash shirt or singlet, club polo shirt, as well as food and accommodation for the week. This does not include club membership.

A swim test must be completed before the camp: a 400 metre pool swim must be achieved in less than 9 minutes (Bronze Medallion) or 200 metres in 5 minutes (SRC).

Laughter and Music Plus

W

E WISH A merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our performers and supporters in the audience. Our Last Thursday Night of Music Plus was on November 26, and over 60 people joined us for this last one of the year.

All our old favourites were there, playing, singing, telling stories or making jokes. With no shortage of musical numbers, young and old were combining their talents or going solo.

We enjoyed Jo on Flute, Sue and Lu on mandolin and guitar, Len on harmonica, Kirsten on guitar and vocals, Sarah with her Irish ballads and Colleen and Mick with their funny stories, poems & jokes.

New talent came in various sizes with Mick joining the band with his drum, Sheryl playing piano and singing, which brought Christmas a little closer. Ken treated us to “Albatross” and “Gunamatta” on guitar,

thus adding depth to our program of music to gain many people’s admiration.

Brayden, our youngest talent, from Tin Can Bay, sang to his own guitar playing and gave a very accomplished performance. After the previous two month’s difficulties of getting him fit to play, he really impressed. We look forward to his return next year.

The evening ended with Sue and Pam playing from their classical repertoire “Danza Espagnol” by Rafael Calace. This followed their performance of the 2nd movement of the “Concerto for Mandolin”

by Hummel, which Sue had played with the Noosa Orchestra on the previous two weekends.

It was a musically rich evening and we hope to have many more of them. Look for the posters next year for Last Thursdays in March, April and May 2016. See you there!

Coast Guard Tin Can Bay Members – hope 2016 will be your best year yet!

OLUNTEERS OF Coast Guard Tin Can Bay will remain on duty 7 days per week throughout 2016, and we hope all mariners take advantage of our services, by logging on whenever they venture onto our waterways.

You can log on using radio (VHF 16, 82, 80, 67 and 27.88MHz or 27.90Mhz), phone 5486 4290 or you can make a personal visit to our base at Norman Point anytime between 6am and 6pm.

Public safety and first aid courses have been very successful, and as a result more courses are planned for early 2016.

Schedules for January and February are: First Aid & Resuscitation, White Water and Bar Crossing, Coastal Navigation and Marine Radio Operations. Reservations are required (5486 4290), and strictly on a first in basis as participant numbers are limited.

Coast Guard Tin Can Bay is welcoming new volunteers. A minimum time commitment of 10 hours per month is required after qualification. Those

interested in volunteering their services for radio operations, charity collections or boat crew operations should contact us for an interview.

Project “Keep Our Boats Afloat” continues to gain momentum as the 2016 Q2 deadline approaches to fund the project. Members of the public and business community interested in ‘keeping our boats afloat’ please contact us as soon as possible.

UEENSLAND HERITAGE places and organisations are invited to join in the National Trust 2016 Heritage Festival by hosting an event or open day between 16 April and 18 May. The theme for 2016 is “Discovery and Rediscoveries”. Discovery can encompass the experience of discovering something for the first time or rediscovering something that has been lost, forgotten or concealed.

The theme is not mandatory but might inspire you to consider focusing on a particular story or part of your collection.

Heritage events in the past have included

exhibitions, displays of photographs, clothing, documents, machinery, transport, tools and memorabilia.

Open days or tours through historic places, including cemeteries, historic properties have been conducted.

Archaeological digs, book launches, history re-enactments, high teas, themed dinners, talks, workshops, musical performances have provided the perfect opportunity for participants to highlight their organisation, collection, or stories from their local area.

The Mad Hatter Morning Tea was a great event, with about 40 people celebrating the 150th anniversary of ‘Alice in Wonderland’.

Librarian Caroline Taylor said, “It was a wonderful atmosphere as people relaxed and really enjoy themselves and a lot had gone to the trouble to dress up. The hall committee graciously lent us their marquee which we had out on the lawn and Jenny and I had fun with the decorations.”

“The day finished with two delightful German backpacker boys who willingly helped us pack everything away, and they happily took what was left over in the food line, which was a huge help.”

Caroline said one of the German lads is a chef and was most impressed with all the home cooked delights.

“There was certainly no shortage of food.

HE TIN CAN BAY Craft Club held their A.G.M on November 24. Retiring President Michelle Parker handed over to new President Penny Melton for 2016.

New Secretary is Sue Tooes and Treasurer is Sue Maddison.

The Club has had an excellent year with bus trips away, and projects to keep our fingers busy.

The craft calendar for 2016 is in the pipeline, so we can look forward to another year of new crafty ideas.

Craft is in recess until January 21. The Craft Club welcomes new members, especially if they have just moved to the Cooloola Coast.

EMBERS OF THE Tin Can Bay Camera Club gathered at the Waterview Bistro at Rainbow Beach on December 12, for the Club’s annual Christmas Luncheon. A great time was had by all at the Club’s final activity for 2015.

The Club finished a very creditable 7th out of the 13 clubs that participated in the 2015 Tewantin-Noosa Shield.

The club’s previous entries in this competition have not met with much success, this was a great result for both the

club and all whose entries were submitted.

Wednesday January 20 will see club activities resume for 2016, with the first club meeting to be held at the Tin Can Bay Library commencing at 7pm.

ELANIE AND STEVE May, owner/ operators of Tin Can Bay Tourist Park, are passionate about Tin Can Bay and the region.

The Tourist Park is growing in popularity, and they have just added two more cabins to the complex.

Melanie said, “we love secluded, tranquil Tin Can Bay. The area has so much to offer for nature based activities, walking, kayaking, cycling, fishing, boating and relaxing.

“Guests visiting the area find dolphin feeding is just an added bonus. Once they know what’s on our ‘To Do List’ they stay and play longer,” she continues.

The region has so much to offer for those wishing to experience Australia’s Nature Coast.

It has been a busy month and looking good for January, Melanie says there have been, “lots of young families and young couples enjoying the area, plus loads of family pre-Christmas get togethers, caravan groups - a great variety of travellers.”

On arrival, guests receive maps and an introduction. “We give guests the run down on what there is to do. Once they’ve explored the Foreshore, cycled, fished and fed the dolphins they are ready to the explore the Sand Blow, Lake Poona and

coloured sands. As there is so much to do in the region, they extend for a week or more.”

They book a lot of tours for guests, and say the most popular are the half day trip with Surf & Sand Safaris or a Fraser Island Day Trip.

Melanie smiled and said guests tell her, “they underestimated the local attractions, there is just so much to see and do.”

Additional feedback received in response to the draft Concept Master Plan is currently being considered by Council’s consultants and a final draft Concept Master Plan will be presented at a Council Workshop early next

year. Upon Council’s endorsement, detailed design will be advanced for selected key priorities and recommendations in the final Concept Master Plan.

Cooloola Coast Visitor’s Guide Rainbow Beach and the Cooloola Coast is home of the Coloured Sands, the majestic Carlo Sandblow and gateway to World Heritage listed Fraser Island. You can feed wild dolphins, visit a historic lighthouse and kayak with the whales.

Rainbow Shores Clarkson Drive has a concrete path for most of the way taking you through wallum and paperbarks.

If riding, you can turn left to the industrial area (Karoonda Road) and the return to town via Carlo Road.

Coloured Sands Starting below the lookout, walk along the beach towards Double Island Point for a kilometre or so to these amazing Coloured sand cliffs, with the best colours around 9 to 10 kilometres along the beach (accessible with a 4wd or Surf and Sand Safari tour) 5486 3131.

Carlo Sand Blow A bush walk up to Carlo Sand Blow is a must for every visitor. Drive to the reservoir at the top of Cooloola Drive. The Blow is an easy 600m walk from the car park or take the longer walk from the National Parks Office. Spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point and Tin Can Bay Inlet are the bonus for your efforts. When the thermals are right, you will often see Hang Gliders taking off and landing at this beautiful piece of Nature’s Sculpture.

Lake Poona After morning tea or lunch in the picnic area you can venture on some wonderful walks to Lake Poona or through some spectacular Rainforest. Allow 40 minutes to reach Lake Poona.

Lake Freshwater Only accessible by 4WD, Tour or Walking. Walking tracks starts at the Bymien picnic area. The round trip from Rainbow Beach will take a full day and requires fitness.

Foreshore Tin Can Bay You can walk 4km from Crabs Creek to Norman Point, over picturesque bridges, signage of flora and fauna, through mangroves, playgrounds and outdoor gyms. It is mostly flat – very safe for children on wheels. Start at the playground opposite the library, cycle to Crabs Creek and stop for a coffee, then return to opposite the library. Enjoy the views out to the inlet while the kids enjoy the playground and skatepark.

Local members of the Queensland Wader Study Group count shorebirds on roost sites around the bay every month. Migratory shorebirds return to the same roost site year after year.

Counting the birds regularly and then comparing the counts over time gives a good idea of how successful the breeding season has been up in the northern hemisphere and also how the birds have managed on their long flights north and then south again.

Unfortunately, shorebird numbers are declining every year but each year we see a similar mix of birds on each of the roost sites. However, there is one bird that I have not seen for a couple of years.

Terek Sandpipers have only been found on one site south of Inskip Point and I have not seen them on this site for some time. They roost in mangrove trees with Grey-tailed Tattlers. When they are roosting they both tuck their heads under their wings.

Because they are very similar in size and both grey and white coloured they are very difficult to identify. If they pull

their heads out from under their wings then it is easy!

Grey-tailed Tattlers have straight bills and Terek Sandpipers have up-curved bills.

For some time I have been hoping to get close views of these birds but each time I approach their roost they fly off to the other side of the bay before I can get my binoculars up or my camera focused on them. This last week was different. The birds stayed sitting on the branches and I was able to photograph them.

There are still Terek Sandpipers mixed in with the Grey-tailed Tattlers!

From what I saw before the birds flew off approximately a quarter of the flock were Terek Sandpipers. This time they flew off because a Tern flew too close over their roosting tree!

HIS HAS BEEN a fantastic year at Rainbow Beach State School. We finished off the year with a huge thank you to all our volunteers at a morning tea.

Prep/1 students personally thanked each volunteer for their assistance.

Our staffing for 2016 will be as follows: • Lynne Chamberlain will be teaching the Prep/1 class.

• Therese Young and Janine Lawler will be teaching the 1/2 class.

• Peter Mileson will be teaching the 3/4 class.

• Tina McColl and myself will be teaching the 5/6 class.

We are very lucky to have a permanent music teacher replacing Mrs. Mason next year. Erin will be joining us from Berserker Street State School in Rockhampton, and will be based here at Rainbow Beach State School.

Congratulations to Chappy, Ronnie Timperon - her position has been extended for three years!

In 2016, we want to continue to invest in the people of our school. Our focus will to ensure that everything we do is the best thing for the kids of Rainbow Beach State School.

As part of this, our school will continue to implement the School Wide Positive

Behaviour Support Framework.

We will also focus on the teaching of reading, and enhancing the opportunities our teachers have to work with each other, for planning and to discuss their teaching.

School Leaders 2016 announced Our School captains will be Charlie and Annie, Vice Captains will be Archie and Ruby.

Sports Captains for Cooloola are Jarrod and Zaraya and for Fraser, Oscar and Emma.

Well done to all - I am positive we will have eight excellent leaders at our school in 2016.

SCHOOL NEWS Cooloola wins Swimming Carnival Fraser started with a fearsome lead from the younger age groups, and they did have the best score per person, but Cooloola won through!

On a scorching hot day, kids put in the effort - it was terrific to see the numbers enter the medley and open events.

Dan Head

Dan recently started as an apprentice plasterer with Brett Lindenberg, from BJ Plastering. The apprenticeship will take 3 and a half to 4 years to complete.

Mum, Cassie Head says, “We are tickled pink he is with a great bloke like Brett and his family. Brett has put other apprentices through with one finishing his trade qualifications last month, hence Dan’s opportunity.”

Traditionally the TAFE component has been 4 blocks of 3 weeks full time, 5 full days a week, 8am - 4pm, but this year the system is changing. Instead, Cassie says it is proposed that all the written work will be performed online and assessed onsite - charting new waters for everyone.

Dan is living with his Mum Cassie (and his Dad, Ashley when he is home) and spends time with his girlfriend’s family in Gympie.

Tin Can Bay P-10 School is back on January 27 Tin Can Bay School P-10 school news by Principal John Jose

HE SCHOOL YEAR will start for all Tin Can Bay students on Wednesday January 27, following the Australia Day Public Holiday on January 26.

The School will be closed on Monday January 25, as Tin Can Bay Staff will be holding their Pupil Free Day during the last week of the Summer vacation.

The Principal and staff wish all Tin Can Bay State School students and families a safe and relaxing holiday, and look forward to working with you again next year.

Farewells – Mrs Callie Sparling has been successful in obtaining a Deputy Principal position in Brisbane. Mrs Sparling has been an integral member of the Tin Can Bay executive team in her role as Deputy Principal, and will be missed by the whole School Community.

Mrs Robyn Cottrell will replace Mrs Sparling as Deputy Principal in Term 1, while Mrs Louise Masri will be filling in as Head of Department. Mrs Honeywill will be acting HOSES in Semester 1, replacing Mrs Mannaert.

The Swimming Carnival held at the Tin Can Bay Pool last Thursday was a huge success despite the windy conditions.

Student participation was outstanding, and team spirit and excellent behaviour was on full display. Congratulations to our Age Champions and thanks to Mr Arthur and Miss Sauer for organising the event.

Year 12 Graduates!

Haven’t our youngsters excelled themselves? Here’s four more Year 12 graduates and their budding careers could not be more diverse.. We wish them all the best!

Paige Reibel Tin Can Bay residents Scott and Rebecca Reibel are very proud of their eldest daughter, Paige.

Presented with the Merv King Memorial Award for Caring for the Environment, she also attained a Gold Academic Award from St Patrick’s College, Gympie.

Paige plans to study international and government relations and a Bachelor of Business at Nathan or Mt Gravatt campus of Griffith University. A receptionist at Tin Can Bay Tourist Park, she hopes to achieve lifeguard and learn to swim coach certification these holidays.

Kirsten Kenney Like her brothers, Beau-Daniel and Thomas, Kirsten attended Tin Can Bay State School. After grade 8 to 10 at St Patrick’s College in Gympie, she accepted a swimming scholarship, and boarded at Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School for her senior schooling.

She was awarded: Academic Honours, Senior School Service Award, Chalmers Prize for Geography, Katherine Carter Prize for modern history, Maria Stevenson Biology Prize, Health Education Prize, Catherine Edmondson Memorial Prize for modern history and English, Zelda McDougall Memorial Prize for environmental sciences, named on the Dean’s list for Academic Excellence in 2014 and 2015.

Kirsten is hoping to study biotechnology or biochemistry.

Toby Chappill Rainbow Beach resident, Toby Chappill graduated from James Nash High School, partnered by Samantha Dykes.

Graham and Afra Chappill will farewell Toby next year as he moves to Motorsport Training Australia in Albury. It is the only institute in Australia where 15 students per year are selected for a two year Certificate IV in Motorsport Technology. Toby says he’s feeling “pretty lucky” about the opportunity.

“I won’t be go-karting next year because of study. We get to work on V8 supercars, fabricating, wiring inside the cars and you learn about horsepower and making engines faster. The course will help me know where to go inside the sport.”

Ask him about it - you’ll see him working these holidays at the Sports Club and Rainbow Beach IGA.

E HAD AN enquiry the other day - a family was new in town, and wanted to know what sports they could play without travelling to Gympie. I rattled off a few - our kids have been in karate, nippers and swim clubs, but when I thought about it, there was so much more on offer…

Dance For those families into dance, Cooloola Coast Rec Dance Club has classes for all ages – from Tiny Tots, ages 3-4, Tinies age 4-5, Subbies age 6-8, Juniors age 9-12 and Inters from ages 13 to 17.

There’s also one for the mums with a seniors team from 17 up. Boys are welcome

Fire Twirling The Rainbow Fire Weavers meet every Monday at 5pm at the Community Hall. We choreograph fire shows on these days and have set performance dates for the end of each term – (term fees, $120).

Nippers Nippers begin learning vital surf awareness and skills from the minimum age of 5 years, right through until they complete the program at 14 years of age.

Little Athletics Cooloola Coast Little Athletics is based on track and field but events are diverse running, jumping, throwing and walking.

Modified to suit the age and ability of the participants, the emphasis is on getting out there and giving it a go.

Training sessions are on Thursday afternoons at the Tin Can Bay State School Oval starting at 3pm.

Sporting Shooters Our local club hosts regular events for air rifle/air pistol, shotgun, rimfire rifle, rimfire and centrefire pistol, black powder/ rendezvous, single action, gallery rifle, and archery held monthly.

There are zone events for target pistol, along with a junior training and development camp and Spring rendezvous (black powder).

Nipper News

Plenty of fun on the break up day - but they’ll be back on the beach January 27!

HE WEEKS SEEM to be flying by, and we are halfway through the nipper season already!

Nippers participated in the second of three Age Championships. They all gave their maximum effort to improve their points total for the season.

Congratulations to all who took part in the event.

At the annual Christmas Breakup Fun Day, Nippers were involved in all age games and relays where all age groups, water safety and age managers get to compete against each other, all in the name of a bit of fun.

It was a fantastic day on the beach, followed by a BBQ and Christmas treats at the clubhouse.

A huge thankyou to Brad Hethorn for coordinating the fun activities and Naomi Cole for organising the club house break-up.

A special thank you must go to Tin Can Bay Lions Club for their $500 donation towards our nipper program. The donation is warmly received and the money will purchase a new nipper board.

For those interested in joining us for the 2015/2016 season, we are happy to take on any new enrolments at any time throughout the season.

All information/forms regarding new applicants are at our desk on the beach every nipper Sunday.

Jasmin White at Queensland Championships

OCAL JASMIN WHITE competed at the 2015 Queensland Championships, held at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre at Chandler last month.

Jasmin was the only 9 year old girl selected for the age 9/10 relay team for Wide Bay. Kids can only start competing at state level in individual events from 11 years old.

Wide Bay Swimming entered a number of

teams across all age groups, in both the 4 x 50 freestyle relays and the 4 x 50 medley relays, where Jasmin swam Breaststroke.

Competitors were selected based on times swum at regional carnivals throughout the season.

The 9/10 year old girls’ Wide Bay team came fifth in the state for the Medley and Freestyle Relays.

An extra paddling day for Dragon Boat Club

NFORTUNATELY, our Cooloola Dragon Boat Club “Come & Try” paddle at Carlo Point in November wasn’t very successful. This was not only a membership drive; we wanted to introduce the values of Dragon Boating to Rainbow Beach residents.

We made the best of the day and took a paddle up the Carlo Inlet, where most of us had never been. What wonderful waterways we have here on the Cooloola Coast.

We will definitely paddle to Carlo again in 2016. Perhaps a Sunday was a bad choice, so we will rectify this by offering another day. We finished off the morning with a sausage sizzle to fuel up before attempting the paddle back to Tin Can Bay. In January, we are introducing an extra day for paddling, commencing Tuesday January 5 at 3.30pm, along with the usual Thursday afternoon and Sunday morning.

Come on down to see our new shed which is to house our boats from the elements. The club wishes our sponsors and supporters a happy and prosperous New Year.

OR THE SECOND year in a row, Tin Can Bay Volleyball girls bring home the Gold at the Australian Volleyball Cup! Well done -what an amazing effort you have done Tin Can Bay P10 proud.

On day 1 of the competition, the team drew in the first game, followed by a convincing win of the second.

These successes saw our team finish at the top of their pool.

Day 2 of the competition involved a tight game, which our team won, to remain top of the pool. It all came to a successful conclusion and the team thanked Mr Arthur and Miss Facer.

A Little Humour Military Man Fifty-one years ago, Herman James, a North Carolina mountain man, was drafted by the Army.

On his first day in basic training, the Army issued him a comb. That afternoon the Army barber sheared off all his hair. On his second day, the Army issued Herman a toothbrush.

That afternoon the Army dentist yanked seven of his teeth. On the third day, the Army issued him a jock strap.

The Army has been looking for Herman for 51 years.

Q: What has more lives than a cat?

A: A frog, because it croaks every night.

White Wedding Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, “Why is the bride dressed in white?”

Tackle Box A man calls home to his wife and says, “Honey I have been asked to go fishing at a big lake up in Canada with my boss and several of his friends. We’ll be gone for a week. This is a good opportunity for me to get that promotion I’ve been wanting, so would you please pack me enough clothes for a week and set out my rod and tackle box.

We’re leaving from the office and I will swing by the house to pick my things up. Oh! And please pack my new blue silk pajamas.”

The wife thinks this sounds a little fishy but being a good wife she does exactly what her husband asked. The following weekend he comes home a little tired but otherwise looking good.

The wife welcomes him home and asks if he caught many fish. He says, “Yes! Lots of Walleye, some Bluegill, and a few Pike. But why didn’t you pack my new blue silk pajamas like I asked you to do?”

The wife replies; “I did, they were in your tackle box.”

Secret Women’s Business When a woman got married, she put a shoebox in the closet and told her husband not to open it.

After over 50 years of marriage she was dying and told him to open the box. When he opened it there were 2 doilies and $85,000.00 inside.

He ask why this was in the box. She replied “when I got married my mother told me to crochet a doily every time I got mad at you.”

He smiled, thinking she was only mad at him twice, and asked what the $85,000.00 was for.

She replied, “that’s the money from selling the doilies.”

Stage Directions An aspiring actor calls his agent from the set of his first film. He is playing the lead role for the first time in his career.

“How’s it going?” the agent asks.

“It’s amazing!” the actor gushes. “The director told me that my performance is making him consider two films with me.”

“Two?” the agent replies.

“Yeah,” the actor says, “my first and my last.”

On the level An ironworker nonchalantly walked the narrow beam fifteen floors above the city sidewalk. Though strong winds were blowing a heavy rain, the worker showed no fear whatever.

When he came down to the sidewalk, a man who had been watching him from ground level went over to him and said, “I was really impressed watching you up there. You were so calm. How did you get a job like this?”

“Well, as a matter of fact,” replied the ironworker, “I used to drive a school bus, until my nerves gave out.”

Piano Forte “Grandpa, do you mind if I play my new harmonica in here?” asked little Phil.

“Of course not, Phil. I love music. In fact, when your grandma and I were young, music saved my life.

Classic Note On the first day of school, Peter handed his new teacher a note from his mother. The teacher unsealed the note, read it, looked at Peter with a frown, and placed the note inside a desk drawer. “So what did she write?” Peter asked. “It’s a disclaimer.”

Cake or bed A husband is at home watching a football game when his wife interrupts, “honey, could you fix the light in the hallway?” It’s been flickering for weeks now.

He looks at her and says angrily, “fix the lights now? Does it look like I have Energex written on my forehead? I don’t think so.”

“Fine”, she says. Then the wife asks, “well then, could you fix the fridge door?

It won’t close right.”

To which he replied, “fix the fridge door?

Does it look like I have Westinghouse written on my forehead? I don’t think so.”

“Fine”, she says, “then you could at least fix the steps to the front door? They are about to break.”

“I’m not a carpenter and I don’t want to fix steps he says, does it look like I have Bunnings written on my forehead? I don’t think so. I’ve had enough of you. I’m going to the pub!!!!” So he goes to the pub and drinks for a couple of hours. He starts to feel guilty about how he treated his wife, and decides to go home.

As he walks into the house he notices that the steps are already fixed.

As he enters the house, he sees the hall light is working As he goes to get a beer, he notices the fridge door is fixed.

“Honey,” he asks, “how’d all this get fixed?”

She said, “well, when you left I sat outside and cried, just then a nice young man asked me what was wrong and I told him. He offered to do all the repairs, and all I had to do was either go to bed with him or bake a cake.”

He said, “so what kind of cake did you bake?”

She replied, “hellooooo ... do you see Sara Lee written on my forehead?

I don’t think so!”
