There is also the horribly sad news that hugely popular OKA band member “DidgeriSTU” is critically ill in hospital with Covid. But, as always, beautiful Rainbow is rallying around to host a fundraiser in his honour on 26 February.

The heart of our community Elisa Seul has managed to swiftly put together what should be an incredible day, with loads of live music and other entertainment. Check out the details on page 3.

This issue turned itself into a wildlife edition, with so many great stories of our unique local fauna needing to be told.

We truly are so fortunate to not only have such an abundance of interesting wildlife so close to us, but also so many people who are so passionate about them and volunteer their time to care for them. I hope you enjoy reading about them all.

Does anyone remember the first ever issue? I have a copy of it (and of course every issue since) sitting here next to me in my office. I will make sure I have a dig through them and re-run some old stories for nostalgia’s sake throughout the year.

As part of the paper’s continued journey, it will soon be time for a fresh new look, with a new logo currently in development, along with some other enhancements that I hope you will be happy with. The website will also be undergoing a huge overhaul, in conjunction with new advertising packages being released soon and offering much more value than just print ads. There will be some great deals on prices for early subscribers. Stay tuned for updates.

HE POWER OF MUSIC is felt by all.

Music is an essential part of culture, entertainment and life for many of us, and due to Covid restrictions, lock downs and mandates, the industry has taken a massive blow!

This year is no different, with gigs and festivals already being cancelled due to the uncertainty of the current state of the world.

Much loved musician Stuart Fergie (also known as DidgeriSTU), frontman of the hugely popular OKA

When Spring Fest organiser Elisa Seul heard that Stu, front man of popular music act OKA, was in ICU battling Covid-related lung issues, she decided it was time to come together for a brother in music and fundraise for him and his family.

Bring in, “A Variant in Music: Friends for OKA” - a free community event being held on the Rainbow Beach Centre Block on Saturday 26 February 2022.

A ‘stripped back’ event, with artists busking for your entertainment, and selling their merchandise.

Raffles, donation boxes, BBQ, and market stall fees will be used to fundraise for Stu’s recovery period.

“This is a community fundraiser to also raise awareness on how the music sector (artists, agencies, event organisers, sound production, venues etc) have all been hit hard and labelled as not essential to our living,” explains Elisa.

This event is run entirely by volunteer members of the Rainbow Beach Community Centre, who have a deep passion for connecting community.

“If you love music, good vibes, the pandemic pushed you down and you need a community, this is for you”, says Elisa of the event.

World Wetlands Day O

N THE 2ND OF FEBRUARY 1971 in the city of Ramsar in Iran, an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands, the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat, was adopted.

Since 1997 this date has been celebrated with World Wetlands Day to draw attention to the relevance of promoting biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in such an important ecosystem.

Did you know that 40% of all species either live or breed in wetlands? Wetlands also remove pollutants from water runoff and provide storm protection to coastlines.

This year is the first year that the day will be observed as a United Nations international day, following its adoption by the General Assembly on 30 August 2021.

Since the early 1700s, 90% of the world’s wetlands have been degraded and we are losing wetlands three times faster than forests. Yet, wetlands are critically important ecosystems that contribute to biodiversity, climate mitigation and adaptation, freshwater availability, world economies and more.

The theme this year is Action for People and Nature and it highlights the importance of actions that ensure that wetlands are conserved and sustainably used. It’s an

appeal to invest financial, human and political capital to save the world’s wetlands from disappearing and to restore those we have degraded.

How can you help from home?

1 Be wetlands mindful in the garden by planting natives and ensuring nonnative vegetation and seeds don’t escape into the environment. This also includes water plants. Also limit use of chemicals such as fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides or fungicides and use organic remedies instead.

2 Pets can have a detrimental effect on wetland ecosystems. Cats are known to prey on native animals so keep them

indoors or under supervision.

3 Use eco-aware, safe, and sustainable methods of waste disposal. Reuse and recycle wherever possible and reduce the use of plastics.

4 Keep litter out of the environment and if you see any, pick it up.

5 Create a compost pile and keep organics out of the bin.

6 Product choice when buying is a step to reducing pollution. Is it eco friendly, sustainably produced, organic?

7 Be energy wise and use energy efficient appliances.

8 Conserve water at home and in the workplace. Check for leaks in pipes and fittings. Use harvested rainwater and turn off the tap when not in use.

9 Volunteer for wetlands preservation projects as every hand helps.

Young visitors keep Rainbow beautiful R

AINBOW BEACH was lucky to have these two lovely young visitors recently.

Emilie Gostelow and Poppy Kelsey were here with their families when they took it upon themselves to give our beach a bit of a clean up.

“We had the pleasure of spending a week at Rainbow Beach over the holidays,” explains Poppy’s proud mum Melissa.

“On one of those days our girls decided to do their bit in cleaning up the beach. They were amazed by the type and amount of rubbish they found!”

The Kelsey family relocated to Gympie from Mt Isa eighteen months ago and now spend many weekends in Rainbow Beach.

Their friends from Mt Isa, including Emilie, were visiting and they all spent the week together here in Rainbow.

These environmentally-aware young ladies were just enjoying the beach when they took themselves off and came back with all the rubbish.

And while they definitely didn’t do it for the recognition, it is important that we all let them know that kind acts do indeed get noticed.

As Melissa says, “I just love that the girls saw the rubbish, knew it shouldn’t be there, and collected it.”

We look forward to having you back soon Emilie and Poppy! Although wouldn’t it be wonderful if there was no rubbish on the beach to begin with…

Cooloola welcomes some rare visitors

UR BEAUTIFUL REGION continues to attract various feathered friends that aren’t often seen in this area.

Below left: A female crimson chat. One similar to this was recently spotted at the Cooloola migratory roosting site

Recently, a beautiful masked owl and an adorable sooty owl were observed on Freshwater Road in the Great Sandy National Park.

With its endearing heart-shaped facial markings, the masked owl is a very welcome sight, as its population numbers are declining and several Australian states have placed it on the Species Conservation Status list, with Victoria listing it as threatened, and New South Wales listing it as vulnerable.

Everything we can do to protect their natural habitat - forests, woodlands, timbered waterways and open country on the edge of these areas - will go a long way to helping them breed successfully.

Sooty owls are also listed as threatened and vulnerable, so to have them spotted in our region is a real testimony to the importance of our conservation areas.

And not only that, a boobook owl has been heard calling at the Bymien picnic area in the Cooloola Recreation Area, a white-throated nightjar was spotted on a track in the heath off Cooloola Way, as well as a very brief glimpse of a grass owl showing we are truly a haven for nocturnal native birds.

To top it off, a crimson chat has been observed at the Cooloola migratory bird roosting site.

There’s no better time to take a walk along the beach, or in the bush, to see what may have flown in to call Cooloola home.

NCE AGAIN Rainbow Beach is the place where people meet, fall in love, and become a family.

Alessia (Lexi) Castiglioni from Italy and Max Ghermann from Germany, met here in 2019. They became a couple after meeting at Arcobaleno restaurant. Max is not the first chef to tempt an Italian with their delicacies and he found his way to Alessia’s heart.

Alessia has recently launched her own business as she is a talented painter and artist.

The local couple married on 13 January in Rainbow Beach, with Occasions

by Carolyn as marriage celebrant. Jess McKenzie, talented photographer of Rainbow Beach Wedding Photography, captured the emotions, the beauty of the landscape, both bush and beach.

Their families were not able to attend due to current international circumstances, although Alessia and Max’s day was filled with support and made special by the presence of their “adopted” family from Rainbow Beach.

We wish this lovely couple all the best, may the years ahead be filled with love and joy.

Free Cyber Resilience Outreach Clinics to be held in Rainbow IDCARE www.idcare.org

I

DCARE HAS launched a national initiative, Cyber Resilience Outreach Clinics (CROC) to enhance the resilience of Australians to cybercrimes, scams, and identity theft.

Part of this is IDCARE connecting with regional communities with a real person presence to give people the tools and confidence to know how to spot these crimes.

IDCARE is a not-for-profit charity and is Australia and New Zealand’s national identity and cyber support service. Our service is the only one of its type in the world. We have helped thousands of individuals and organisations reduce the harm they experience from the compromise and misuse of their identity information by providing effective response and mitigation.

When victims report an offence to ScamWatch or police, they are referred to IDCARE, Australia’s only dedicated support service for victims of these crimes, to receive specialist support and treatment.

The CROC initiative was jointly launched by the Minister for Home Affairs Karen

IDCARE launching the CROC initiative in November. Come and chat to them about all things cyber security at the RB Markets this month.

LANNING IS CONTINUING for the 2022 Cooloola BioBlitz being held in Rainbow Beach 25, 26 and 27 March.

What is a BioBlitz?

A BioBlitz is an intense period of biological surveying in an attempt to record all the living species within a designated area.

Groups of scientists, naturalists and volunteers conduct an intensive field study over a continuous time period.

Rainbow Beach has hosted a BioBlitz for three of the past four years. The event will have expert specialists leading small groups of participants into the field each day.

Artist and host of the Noosa Nature Journal Club Dion Dior will also be in attendance. Learn “Nature Journaling” in the pristing Great Sandy National Park, mentored by Dion Dior and a different scientist in the field each day.

What to expect if you attend BioBlitz: Field Activities - you will accompany your team leader to various sites. They will be an expert in some but not all species.

As a team, you and your fellow “Citizen Scientists” will be guided in the process of finding, identifying, photographing and

learning about the various plants, animals, and fungi that you find.

Base Camp Activities - at Base Camp in the hall, there will be friends to be made and reconnected with, and events and facilities for you to access: • Endless tea, coffee and water filling station • Packed Brown Bag Lunch collection • Social events and dinners • Presentations and workshops by team leaders and guests in the evenings • Nature inspired artworks and art activities by the Gympie Regional Gallery • Data entry of the day’s finds and matching photos to specimens to make Research Grade records • Photo opportunities of specimens, “Eure”a!’ moments and the group in action at HQ Guided Excursions - early morning and evening guided excursions: • These are in addition to the “blitz’ field trips • Guided by team leaders and guests in their areas of specialty

OU OFTEN HEAR them croaking but how often do you see a frog?

Well make February the month you go looking for what’s making those calls!!

Find a Frog in February is a Mary River Catchment Coordination Committee (MRCCC) citizen science project that aims to get 5000 frog encounters over the month so hop onboard this great

initiative and get recording!

During February keep an eye (and ear) out for frogs around the home or out in nature. Frogs are an early indicator of environmental change and by gathering information during this annual frog search it will contribute to knowledge about frog distributions, population levels, habitat requirements, and breeding activity.

Where to look? Frogs need moisture so dams, billabongs, waterways, puddles, soaks, and ephemeral creeks are a great

place to go searching. Using a torch at night is best but be careful while out in the dark!

Photos and call recordings are the best way to get a frog identification so keep the camera and recording device handy and make sure you join the “Find a FrogMRCCC” group on the FrogID phone app.

OU MAY HAVE seen or heard through the media that the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) is experiencing unprecedented demand for its services due to the current Covid event.

It is anticipated that the Covid peak will be seen in the first week in February which means that demand will only increase.

The QAS is employing measures to address the situation and to utilise available staff to best advantage. However, it would be helpful if the general public could also take some steps to assist during this difficult time.

One area of concern is the number of calls being made for QAS Triple Zero assistance. The operators are fielding a significant number of calls that are not for emergency situations.

If you want to know, for example, where the Covid testing sites are in the region, this information is available on the qld.gov.au/health website or you can call 134COVID (134268).

This site also has a good deal of information on what you need to do if you test positive for Covid including periods of isolation, assistance with essential requirements etc.

Please do not call Triple Zero (000) unless you are experiencing severe symptoms and may need to be hospitalised.

If we all in the community use the Ambulance Service in the correct manner, they will be able to respond more quickly to those patients who have a critical need.

TCB RSL Kicks Off 2022 with a Bang Ross Carruthers

The year kicked off with a bang with a great Australia Day event featuring traditional Aussie fare, cold drinks, and fun activities.

Special events planned for the first quarter of 2022 include the ever-popular Trivia with Tezza and team on Saturday 26 February.

The day will begin with a BBQ lunch from 12pm followed by trivia, eyes down at 2pm.

Book your teams in early to join in the fun!

Then flag Thursday 17 March on your calendar for the RSL’s famous St Patrick’s Day replete with green beer and all the trimmings.

The ever-popular Sunday BBQ featuring live entertainment, great raffles, and the best BBQ in Tin Can Bay, will continue. The BBQ runs from 12pm to 2pm. Both the steak sandwiches and hamburgers are terrific so make sure you give them a go.

Entertainment coordinator Michael Austin informs me that he has a great program of performers booked. Michael declared, “The entertainment on Sunday afternoon at the club will be bigger and better than ever. We have a number of new performers booked who will be sure to delight members and visitors alike.”

The Shed is slowly grinding back to life after our Christmas respite with the heat, rain, and further Covid regulations putting a bit of a damper on activities.

But we’re getting back to normal now with members returning to regular classes: Monday morning macrame, Thursday afternoon art classes, and Friday games morning.

Unfortunately our planned Australia Day activities and our Shed Shop Sale Days have been postponed till further notice to reduce possible Covid spread.

Recently, as the Cooloola Cove Wheelie Walkers were walking and rolling along Creekside Esplanade pathway, we were joined by an exuberant, cheerful young dog enjoying her illicit freedom. Fortunately her worried neighbour met us and transferred our new friend into his car to return home.

Another morning I was driving past the Tin Can Bay School on my way to meet the CCWW, thinking “No need to stop at the school crossing; it’s school holidays”, when the 4x4 vehicle in front slammed on the brakes. Then I see emerging a (parent) duck, followed by two ducklings, using the school crossing! I laughed all the way to the Shopping Centre Bus Shelter on Nautilus Drive.

“One Step at a Time Tin Can Bay” gained seven new members, two of whom are men, who now number thirteen. (Total active membership, 46). Early group departs from Tin Can Bay Bakery at 6am led by Denise and Kate, Wednesdays and Saturdays; the later group leaves at 6.30am with Kristine, Bev, and myself.

“Cooloola Cove Wheelie Walkers” continue to meet at 8am on Mondays and Fridays at the Cooloola Cove Shopping Centre Bus Shelter on Nautilus. Queries?

HE PLANNED Ecumenical Service and Blessing of the Presidents’ Collars for the Wide Bay area - and up to Bundaburg - has been postponed.

This gathering usually starts our year’s activities in February, although members have been catching up informally over the holiday season.

Our AGM will be held in March and nominations called for in February.

Committee members include the normal President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer, but also a Tour Director and a Guest Speaker Officer to organize activities for members to enjoy during the year. The committee also includes a Welfare Officer.

The Cooloola Coast Probus Club is a caring group in their retirement years, who welcome new members to our fold.

Our members were on holiday from CWA during January and have been busy knitting Trauma Teddies due to demand.

Thank you for our last donations of wool all now knitted, always appreciated.

We are looking forward to 2022 as it is our 100 year anniversary of our organisation.

Our International Weekend in February at Roma to celebrate our country of study “Australia”and product “Pineapples“ has been cancelled due to Covid restrictions.

We are currently assembling Kits for Kids (school items) and Birthing Kits (basic needs for baby’s delivery) to be distributed to

villages in Papua New Guinea.

ELL, AS I MENTIONED last month the RB Droughtrunners decided to have a short break after six years of helping farmers and communities in drought.

Some of you may not know but the drought rages on out west around Winton and other areas.

Working through Winton Council Family Support last month we donated $4000 in visa cards and probably upwards of $10,000 in presents and hampers.

Now we have flood devastation close to home, so again no relief from disasters.

Cyclone Seth certainly left a tale of woe.

This event reminds me of an event I read in a book called Cyclone. I can’t remember the exact date but about 100 years ago a cyclone hit Brisbane and moved inland to Gympie nearly wiping it off the map. History always seems to repeat itself. Another in September 1932 demolished a lot of buildings in Gympie.

So again Rainbow Beach DroughtRunners will help - this time with fencing materials

like we did after the fires in northeast Victoria two years ago.

We will start by putting in $5000 for fencing materials which will be delivered to contract fencers. Hopefully we can add to this.

This month we also donated $600 to feed the Gympie homeless.

We have already started canvassing for funds in Victoria as they have again enjoyed a wonderful season.

E CERTAINLY LOVE rainbows around here, and no one wears one better than our cover model, the cheeky rainbow lorikeet (Trichoglossus moluccanus).

The stunning spectrum of this parrot is a common sight on the east coast of Australia, but it is undeniably one of the most vividly hued birds that call here home.

It can be distinguished by its deeply iridescent blue head, greenish-yellow collar and green wings, back and tail.

The chest is orange/yellow. The belly is deep blue, and the thighs and rump are green.

A veritable rainbow with wings!

To tell the bubs from the mums, juveniles have a black beak, which gradually brightens to orange in the adults.

Their diet consists mainly of fruit, pollen, and nectar, and the end of their tongue has a papillate appendage made for gathering pollen and nectar from flowers.

It’s important to note that feeding them bread or bread coated with honey is incredibly harmful to their development and should never be done.

The eggs of the rainbow lorikeet are laid on chewed, decayed wood, usually in a hollow branch of a eucalypt tree. Both mum and dad prepare the hollow for the eggs and feed the young, but only the female incubates the eggs.

Middle Rock

Swim in the flags in front of the Surf Lifesaving tower. Walk via the steps or walkway near the lookout and surf club, or drive onto Griffin Esplanade. 4WD beach access begins here.

When tides and conditions allow, the walk to Middle Rock and back is a beautiful way to check out the Coloured Sands. From here, vehicle permits are required and dogs are prohibited.

Coloured Sands Visit the patrolled beach, near the surf tower or the lookout to see the 70 plus colours in our cliffs. From town, walk south 1km along the beach - for best colours 4WD or tour a further 9km.

Remember it is a gazetted road.

Inskip Point This peninsula is the gateway to Fraser Island, a favourite fishing spot and pet friendly camping grounds for generations.

Only 15 minutes drive (2WD) from Rainbow Beach.

Carlo Sand Blow

Freshwater Picnic Area

Park at the top of Cooloola Drive, and walk 600m up from the car park or bushwalk about 2km from the National Parks Office for spectacular views of the Coloured Sands, Double Island Point, Tin Can Bay Inlet and hang gliders.

Walk to and swim in nearby Freshwater Lake, picnic or BBQ at the beautiful shady day-use area, found before Freshwater Road reaches Teewah Beach. 4WD only.

Poona Lake

Walk 4km from Crab Creek to Norman Point, over picturesque bridges, signage of flora and fauna, through mangroves, playgrounds and outdoor gyms. It is mostly flat and very safe for children on wheels. Look out for 137 species of birds.

Drive to Bymien Picnic Area (2WD) via 3km gravel on the Freshwater Road, (off Rainbow Beach Road). It’s a 40 minute walk to reach the cool waters of Lake Poona through beautiful rainforest and carrol (grey myrtle) scrub.

Searys Creek Only 7km from town towards Gympie, with 2 waterholes, boardwalks, bridges and history – do read the sign and spot the creatures. Always cool on the hottest of days.

Rainbow Beach Headland A look out, a viewing platform, 2 playgrounds, a skatepark, BBQs and picnic facilities. See the whales from here in season and watch the surfers out the front. Take a photo at the Cherry Venture propeller.

Double Island Point Access via the 4WD only Great Beach Drive or Freshwater Track. See dolphins, whales (seasonal), manta rays, turtles and walk up to our historic lighthouse. It has the longest break in Australia -when the swell lines up.

Mudlo Rocks

Wander here at low tide, play in rock pools and watch 4WDs navigate any exposed rocks. ALWAYS check conditions and ask locals before you 4WD - it is not always safe, even close to low tide.

Tin Can Bay Foreshore

Tin Can Bay Wildflower Walk Known for spectacular wildflower species, access this trail from the corner of Emperor St and Oyster Parade. Best in late winter and early spring.

Boat Ramps You can launch your boat at Norman Point and Crab Creek in Tin Can Bay or Carlo Point and Bullock Point near Rainbow Beach. All except Bullock Point offer toilet and scenic picnic facilities.

Feed Wild Dolphins at Norman Point Arrive from 7am, after feeding (fees apply), the dolphins leave for another day. A picturesque peninsula with public pool, playground, sailing, boat ramp and pontoon and picnic facilities.

Carlo Point For spectacular sunsets over the water, take a cheese platter or fish and chips and watch the day’s end. This favourite fishing spot is only 3 km from Rainbow Beach.

ESTLED IN OUR gorgeous region is the spectacular Poona Lake, a must-see for all visitors and residents alike.

The beginning of the signposted walk is easily accessible in a standard car and is located at the Bymien day-use area, within the Cooloola Recreation Area, Great Sandy National Park.

A 4.2 km (return) walk will see you delighting in ambling amongst kauri and hoop pines, strangler figs entangling with their host trees, and slender piccabeen palms reaching for the sun and sky.

The lake itself is the prize at the end of the walk, revealing itself only as you get to the end of the track.

The pristine lake is surrounded by paperbarks and home to an abundance of birdlife; with catbirds, wompoo pigeons and noisy pittas just some of the native inhabitants to be found.

As well, after a quenching deluge, fungi and mushrooms will make themselves known, delighting the amateur mycologist in all of us.

If so inclined, you can take a dip yourself in the fresh, cooling waters of the lake, and then relax on its white sandy shore.

With so much natural beauty to be seen on this walk, it’s always a good time to head out and breathe in the fresh air as you make your way up the sand dune and along the path to Poona Lake.

CHOOL HOLIDAYS combined with the extended Christmas break resulted in a busy time at the Dolphin Centre.

We averaged over 150 visitors per day so a lot of people visited the Cooloola Coast

during January. Some stayed a few nights at least in Tin Can Bay, Rainbow Beach, or camping at Inskip Point.

We hope you enjoyed your Christmas and New Year with family as Covid rules changed for gathering.

Harmony has not visited for over four weeks. Patch is missing occasionally.

ANUARY WAS A month of high rainfall and heavy conditions on the golf course.

Our band of willing helpers have been out assisting green staff to try to keep the grass mown to an acceptable height.

We are looking forward to moving ahead with our competitions which are scheduled for the coming months.

Nomination for Ladies 4B matchplay is on this month’s calendar and the Men will be playing a qualifying round for their 4B matchplay also.

Visiting Golf Australia handicapped players are welcome to play in our competitions. Veteran Men play Tuesdays,

Ladies play Wednesdays, Thursday and Friday are 9 hole competitions open to Men and Women. Saturday and Sunday are normally mixed events.

Bookings can be made through the Pro Shop on 0409 727 577 or by calling into the Pro Shop where either James or a member of his staff will help.

James has a well stocked shop with reasonably priced clothing and footwear.

IT’S GREAT 24 – Rainbow Beach Cooloola Coast Community News – February 2022

MERGENCY FUNDING is now available to Queensland sport and active recreation clubs that have been affected by heavy rain and flooding caused by exTropical Cyclone Seth which battered the coast from 7-10 January.

Acting Sport Minister Scott Stewart said clubs and organisations in the local government areas of Gympie and Fraser Coast are now eligible for up to $5000 through the Sport and Recreation Disaster Recovery Program.

“Level 1 funding of up to $5000 is available now to replace damaged equipment including office and canteen facilities, to cover clean-up costs, for repairs and insurance excess,” Mr Stewart said.

“Ex-Tropical Cyclone Seth dumped huge amounts of rainfall along the Wide Bay and Fraser Coast regions, affecting inland centres as well, causing damage to buildings and equipment.

“This disaster funding is designed to get quickly into the hands of those volunteer sport and recreation clubs who could use a hand in getting their facilities cleaned up and back in working order

so they can continue serving their local communities.”

Cooloola BMX Club President Richard Plukaard said the funding will be vital for repairing their flood damaged track.

“The racetrack was completely covered with water which leaves horrendous holes and imperfections and blisters in the track to be fixed,” said Mr Plukaard.

“We have to re-glue and re-shape 60 per cent of the 300-metre track, and a 1000 litre pot of glue costs $3500 so it’s quite expensive.

“The funding will be such a blessing, and with the help of all our volunteers, we will hopefully be back on track for the start of our normal racing season on 28 January.”

Not-for-profit sport and active recreation organisations in a number of other local government areas affected by heavy rainfall and flooding are also currently eligible for Level 1 funding, which is available up to three months after the funding is activated.

Cooloola Dragons return to the water Lizz Donovan

APPY 2022. It’s time for the Dragons to get back on the water after Christmas celebrations which the club celebrated in Kin Kin and a great time was had by all.

Paddling has begun again in earnest and on our first return we had two boats out on the water. It seems like everyone is keen to make amends for the Christmas indulgences.

Our training sessions are held each Sunday at 7.30 am and Thursdays at 3.30pm. Besides getting fit and retaining that fitness we train for upcoming regattas throughout the year.

A normal training session includes warm up exercises then preparing the boat to go out on the water. Followed by paddling for about an hour which Cleaning the brightly coloured boats after being out on the water

generally sees us complete about a total of 6km training incorporating various paddling techniques, race starts, and endurance training.

A full boat may have up to 21 persons on board with the two most important people the Sweep who keeps an eye out for the tides, winds, obstacles etc and the Coach who takes us through our paces.

Once back on land we clean the paddles and the boats and return them to their original spot awaiting the next training day.

There is always plenty of opportunity to come along and experience the dragon boat feeling. If you turn up on either a Sunday or Tuesday we will take you out and give you a trial run. Anybody is most welcome to join us.

First round of FairPlay vouchers open for 2022

FFORDABILITY CAN be a key driver to our youngsters’ participation in physical activity.

Parents, carers or guardians can apply for a voucher valued up to $150 for their child, which can be used towards sport and active recreation membership, registration, or participation fees with registered activity providers.

Round 6 is now open, with applications closing on 23 March 2022 (or earlier if fully allocated). Note there is a limit of 1 voucher per child per calendar year.

You can apply if your child: • is a Queensland resident aged from 5 to 17 years (inclusive) at the time of application • did not already receive a FairPlay voucher in the calendar year • holds, or whose parent, carer or guardian holds, a valid Services Australia Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card with the child’s name on it.

If you are experiencing financial hardship but don’t meet the eligibility criteria, you can seek to apply through a registered referral agent (see FairPlay website for details).

You will need a QGrants account to apply - you will need to create an account if you don’t already have one. Information on how to easily create your QGrants account is also available on the FairPlay website.

RAINBOW BEACH DEEP SEA FISHING

Members have reported catches of cod, summer whiting, flathead, and mud crabs; there have also been some decent sized grunter and mangrove jack.

Club member John Blackman recently landed a whopper mangrove jack which measured 58cm, and there was a massive cod caught by Yug Eiznekcm near the Tin Can Boat ramp.

I hope to have a photograph of John’s jack for my February news report.

One in five boaties flout lifejacket rules A

N ALARMING NUMBER of Queensland boaties continue to ignore lifejacket rules according to new data from Maritime Safety Queensland.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said a recent school holiday blitz on lifejacket compliance found one in five vessel operators doing the wrong thing.

“It is truly shocking that 20 percent of the boats inspected this summer either didn’t have properly working lifejackets, didn’t have enough for everyone on board,

or didn’t have the right lifejackets for children,” Mr Bailey said.

Mr Bailey said in some cases, boats were found carrying children who were not wearing lifejackets.

“I find it really disturbing that some boaties aren’t exercising every precaution when it comes to their children, who are most vulnerable when things go wrong,” he said.

“I can’t over-emphasize how important it is to follow the lifejacket rules every time you go out on the water.”

Not wearing a lifejacket was one of the top fatal five risks for recreational boating “Lifejackets are the seatbelts of the sea and if they’re not on, they can’t save you.”

“Of 259 people who drowned after boating incidents in Queensland between 1992 and 2020, only 15 were known to be wearing lifejackets.”

Mr Bailey said not wearing, carrying, or having easy access to lifejackets was one of the top fatal five risks for recreational boating which also included failure to keep a proper lookout, speeding, alcohol

and drugs use, and poor trip planning.

“If you’re going boating, make sure you have enough properly fitting, fully serviced lifejackets on board and everyone can get to them in a hurry,” he said.

“Drinking alcohol and being under the influence of drugs reduces your ability to boat safely so remember, don’t drink and drive.”

OW HEALTHY are our local waterways? We have a variety of sources of water pouring out into the Tin Can Bay Inlet and the highly-valued Great Sandy Straits.

There are intertidal, marine, boat harbour, stormwater, and tannin-stained freshwater types of water. Each one has a different guideline to grade its quality.

Volunteers have been using a water quality meter to monitor a total of 21 local sites through Cooloola Coastcare’s Waterwatch program since 2014.

While the rain belted down and the wind whistled on 5 January, eight Coastcare members gathered to learn and train about monitoring the water quality in our local creeks.

Jess Dean, from Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee (MRCCC) led us through the process.

Those of us who have been water monitoring for years were delighted with the booklets she had made to identify aquatic plants. She emphasised the importance of every piece of information we gather about the health of our waterways.

With that in mind, we have now purchased an underwater drone with funding from the Gympie Regional Council Environment Grant. This will be used to look at plant life underwater for Waterwatch, as well as for use in the focus on seagrass in the Tin Can Bay Inlet Rehabilitation Project (funding also from GRC).

The first commissioning run of the ROV (remotely operated underwater vessel) was on 17 January in the Tin Can Bay Pool. (Thank you, Renae, for staying late to allow this.)

It proved to be very agile and easily controlled by a pilot. It takes photos and video, and can be fitted with other sensors and a manipulator to pick up objects and water samples.

The various Waterwatch creek sites will be reviewed by volunteers on 31 January and 1 February. We will consider the significance and accessibility of each location, and take photos from land and sky (when possible) to include in a later report and presentation.

WANT TO GET INVOLVED? Cooloola Coastcare conducts Water Quality Monitoring once every two months in the Tin Can Bay, Cooloola Cove, and Rainbow Beach areas.

They are looking for volunteers from Rainbow Beach, and would welcome anyone who is interested in adopting a site or two. You will be trained and mentored and you would visit your site every two months with the water meter.

It only takes about 1 - 2 hours every two months.

LOVE THE FIRST Friday of March as it’s the World Day of Prayer, when I learn about a country, its culture, joys, concerns, and problems, and pray for its needs expressed by women from differing Christian denominations and traditions, with congregations from other churches in our area.

People in over 170 countries gather to focus upon a different country each year, participating in a global ecumenical event of informed prayer, prepared by a committee of that year’s chosen country.

The Cooloola Coast 2022 World Day of Prayer service is hosted by the Catholic parishioners of St John Vianney Tin Can Bay, at 10am on Friday 4 March at the Community Centre, corner of Tin Can Bay and Bayside Roads, Tin Can Bay. Women of England, Wales and Northern Ireland, three countries forming part of the United Kingdom, developed the theme, God’s promise to His people in exile in Babylon, based on the book of Jeremiah Chapter 29 Verse 11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord. “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Angie writes, “Following the theme given, I have used several images to depict the key words as follows: FREEDOM: an open door to a pathway across an endless open vista. JUSTICE: broken chains. GOD’S PEACE and FORGIVENESS: the dove of peace and a peace lily breaking through the pavement. OVER ALL: the rainbow represents the overreaching love of God.” We look forward to listening to Jacquie Cross, who is our guest speaker, most appropriately, as she came from England.

Usually we share plates of food brought by regular participants for a late morning tea afterwards. However, given that Covid-19 is likely to be restricting us, we may need to keep it more simple, abiding by the government rules and regulations in place on 4 March. This may mean that people who are not double vaccinated, who don’t have “the green tick” may be disallowed from joining us.

HERE HAS BEEN a great response to the first few weeks of the Rainbow Beach Community Pantry with many locals dropping off supplies for the benefit of families in our community who need some support.

Victory Care at Maryborough and locals have also donated frozen meals which have been greatly appreciated and the Community Pantry was able to provide Victory Care hampers for families at Rainbow Beach, Cooloola Cove, Tin Can Bay, and Maryborough over the Christmas period.

We now have an agreement with Woolies at Cooloola Cove to pick up veggies, frozen goods and household supplies twice a week that are past their “best before” date and hopefully the amount of goods will increase once regular supplies are available

once again.

It has been a real privilege to be able to sit and chat with a wide variety of people from the community: mums, dads, children, teenagers, single parents, and older folk living on their own. Most days there is a steady stream between 10am and 2pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the time flies!

Even though I can’t be chaplain at the school due to the Covid vaccination mandate, I hope that the Rainbow Beach Community will consider me as your community chaplain and that you will feel comfortable dropping in for a chat about anything that is concerning you.

Pindari Life began in Ashford, New South Wales several years ago where Gillian and Alfie and their team provided programs for disadvantaged youth and families, youth at risk, school groups, and special interest groups. Since their move to Queensland, they have run several school and adventure camps in the Gympie and Rainbow Beach area.

From Tuesday 1 February, the Rainbow Beach Learning Community based at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Carlo Road will be offering a range of activities for children and teenagers who are being homeschooled.

Held on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9am and 3pm activities will include art, photography, sewing, computer skills, cooking and outdoor activities such as paddle boarding, kayaking, fishing, bush skills and nature play. These activities will be run by a team of experienced locals with the proposed cost being $10 per child each 32 – Rainbow Beach Cooloola Coast Community News – February 2022

We are also starting to plan for this year’s Sandcastle Competition, following the success of last year’s competition, where hundreds of locals and visitors had a fantastic morning creating amazing sand sculptures and winning great prizes donated by local businesses.

Sandshapers of Noosa will again be in attendance to inspire us with one of their incredible creations. The competition will be held the first week of the school holidays on Wednesday 13 April, so make sure you save the date and get a team together to plan and build your sand creation.

Big Bash has just come to an end for another season, with Gree ngs to all in the land of Rainbow. The new year is in the final being played between Perth Scorchers and Sydney full swing and Australia Day has just been and gone. What a Sixers just as this goes to print. Unfortunately Brisbane Heat great day to celebrate our brilliant mix of cultures in the finished way down the ladder so their season finished up best place on earth. nice and early. I bet a lot of the kids aren’t complaining though!

Especially the ones that get to enjoy our beau ful beaches for even longer this summer.

Hope everyone has recovered from the wild weather we had last month. That kept things interes ng for a bit didn’t it! Poor old Maryborough copped it with the floods, hope everyone is ok. The king des here on the Cooloola Coast were pre�y spectacular, not something you see everyday.

On to the all-important Sport Report: The good old Aussie Open has certainly been exci ng so far, with deadset legend Ash Barty into the final at me of wri ng. Good on you Ash, you have all of Australia behind you!

Some stats for you: the last me an Aussie woman made the final was back in 1980 (Wendy Turnbull), and the last me an Aussie woman won the tle was Chris O’Neil back in 1978. A stellar achievement from Ms Barty.

And let’s not forget the other Aussies - an all-Aussie final for the men’s doubles (no result at me of wri ng), an Aussie team in the mixed doubles final, and Australian of the Year Dylan Alco� making it to the final as well but unfortunately not quite ge�ng over the line. S ll a sterling effort.

A very enjoyable Ashes series, always good to smash Pics cap on: Anne e and Mitch tempt you with our fabulous cheese selec on the Poms, 4-nil was a great result and it was so kind of from our deli fridge. Grab some goodies, add a bunch of flowers and surprise us to let them draw one match. your other half with a roman c picnic.
