And we are so fortunate that most of these events are either completely free or just a gold coin donation. What a wonderfully generous community we have, with so many incredible volunteer groups willing to give so much time to ensuring the enjoyment of others. That is actually my favourite thing about Rainbow - fine, it has the best beaches in the world, amazing bushwalks, a unique mix of local flora and fauna, and worldclass fishing and 4WDing. We all know that. But it is the sense of community that makes Rainbow what it is. Continuing in this sappy vein, I wanted to thank everyone again for their continued support of this paper. And don’t forget I absolutely love reader input - feel free to get in touch with any comments

comes to Rainbow! Melissa Marie

A

VERY SPECIAL visitor is coming to Rainbow Beach this month, one who’s guaranteed to make us feel young at heart, both adults and kids alike! Make sure you haven’t been too naughty this year, as the Rainbow Beach Community Centre has arranged for Santa to bring his belly laughs and beard on Saturday 11 December to our festive region. This family-friendly free and unticketed event will be held at the Rainbow Beach Community Hall and grass area from 3pm, with the star attraction, a certain Mr S. Clause, being in attendance from 3.30pm till 4.45pm. Kids will be able to line up to have a chat with the big man and let him know all their Christmas wishes, and receive a gift from Santa and a picture with him to treasure. Special mention must be made to the Rainbow Beach Boomerang Bags group who have worked tirelessly during the past months helping Santa out by sewing the bags and sponsoring the gifts that the jolly man in the red suit will hand out. As well, another special elf, local

talented professional photographer Jess McKenzie, will be on hand to take happy snaps of families and kids with Santa. And rumour has it the main man has ditched his sleigh in favour of arriving in town by Rainbow Beach Helicopters! Event organiser and President of the Rainbow Beach Community Centre, Elisa Seul, said: “The main purpose of the event is to bring the community together, share what we do, build that special magic of the holiday season for our kids. Locals and visitors are both welcome.” School kids will be performing a dance inside the Hall on stage from 3pm till 3.15pm, and then live music will kick-off the festivities outside till 7.30pm. The day promises to be a highlight of the year here in beautiful Rainbow, as there will be markets stalls, raffles, and food vendors as well. The organisers give thanks to Events & Tents QLD who are sponsoring the fencing, the staging and helping with the set up. There will be truly something for everyone, and the event will be a great way to celebrate our wonderful colourful community as we look to usher in an even brighter 2022!

4 – Rainbow Beach Cooloola Coast Community News – December 2021

T’S HARD TO BELIEVE that this year is drawing to a close already. It is a good time to reflect on events and be grateful for all things wonderful! Firstly, we are delighted that the permanent Principal position has been filled by Mr Steve Bennett. Our small school needs a leader that can build a culture of kindness and respect, a sense of belonging, and a thirst for learning in a safe environment, and we are fortunate enough that Mr Bennett meets all these needs and more. The P&C would like to sincerely thank Mr Bennett for his dedication to the students, school and his involvement in every event that takes place. Secondly, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude for the immense support that the Rainbow Beach Community has given to the school and P&C. We have been involved with several events, such as The Big Summer Blowout, The Sandcastle Competition, Variety Jet Trekkers lunch, Father’s and Mother’s Day stalls, Clean Up Australia, Rainbow Beach Market BBQs, Springfest and The Great Gympie Duck Race. In every single event, we have received support from most local businesses in the form of donations, Community Hall sponsorship, local group support (thanks

Bingo ladies!) as well as time and effort from community volunteers and parents/ caregivers. We will thank each of you directly, as it would take up half the paper if we did it here! But, please know that we acknowledge ALL of you, and are warmed by your generosity. Thank you Rainbow Beach Community! We would also like to bring attention to our very own wonder woman, Chappy Ronnie. If you haven’t met her yet, then you are missing out! This kind lady goes above and beyond her role as Chaplain and brings warmth and an abundance of creative ideas to learn and connect. Chappy has breathed new life into the school garden, and we are so thankful for her presence. Lastly, we wish to congratulate all the students and staff for giving their best during the school year. For some students it was their first experience, and some it was their last. It is wonderful to see all the students progress, and wish them all the best for their futures. The teaching and support staff have done an amazing job of taking care of our children and our hats go off to them! Wishing you all a fantastic Christmas and holiday break!

Support Local this festive season! Melissa Marie

W

ITH CHRISTMAS FAST approaching, our thoughts turn to loved ones, friends, and family, and how we can best show them our affection and gratitude for all they mean to us. Why not celebrate your love by giving them a thoughtful, locally-sourced gift from our vibrant area. And what better way to help our local businesses thrive through recent challenging times than to keep our support homegrown and here in our very own community. From our neighbours and families who share our beautiful region, to loved ones distant geographically but always close to our hearts, here are some ideas for the perfect gifts and experiences this Christmas. A great place to source unique pressies is at our local markets - the second Saturday of each month for Rainbow Beach (next one held 11 December), and the third Saturday of each month for Tin Can Bay (next one on 18 December) . You never know what you might find for the hard-to-buy-for loved one, and you can’t go wrong with a one-of-a-kind market find. Sometimes the best gift is just time with each other to relax, have a scrumptious meal, and enjoy each other’s company with a drink or two at our very own Rainbow Beach Surf Lifesaving Club. Boasting beautiful sea breezes and gorgeous vistas of the ocean, it is the perfect place for a Christmas catch-up with friends and family.

The Tin Can Bay Country Club also serves as the perfect spot for a friendly, festive holiday get-together. Choose from their authentic Chinese food selection, and/or from their classic Aussie favourites on their much-loved menu. Also a gorgeous place to spend time with our nearest and dearest during the New Year celebrations is Tin Can Bay’s Bar and Grill at the Marina. With spectacular views

meet

across the water, you can choose delicious meals from their a la carte options, and enjoy a relaxing tipple from their extensive fully-licensed bar. Another fabulous option is the Rainbow Beach Sports Club, where you can wind-down on their open-air deck and spend some quality time with others all whilst enjoying a range of delicious entrees, fresh local seafood, and sizzling steaks. And because there’s always room for dessert, you won’t go away disappointed with what’s on offer for your sweet tooth! For the handy-person around your house, or a friend who’s found a passion for DIY, pop into the Cooloola Mitre 10 at Tin Can Bay for a gift they’ll treasure. For the camping and fishing enthusiast in your life, head on into Rainbow Beach Fishing & Camping. Maybe if they bag a big one they’ll share it with you! A beautifully-grilled fish with friends, or a few nights under the stars camping with friends in our beautiful National Parks, sounds like the perfect way to connect with each other over the holiday break. These are just a few small suggestions - a quick flick through this issue will show you that we have so many other amazing small businesses in town, make sure you support them this festive season! Whatever you do to celebrate this Christmas, we encourage you to support your local community and enjoy what makes this area unique and so very “us”.

GET PREPARED

Step 1: Understand your risk

Step 2: Prepare a household emergency plan

Step 3: Pack an emergency kit

When it comes to extreme weather events in Queensland, it’s not a matter of “if” but “when”

Q

UEENSLAND IS THE most natural disaster impacted state in Australia, exposing our communities and infrastructure to repeated damage. As Queenslanders we understand the impacts from natural disasters can include minor inconveniences such as transport delays, needing to use alternative travel routes, collecting children early from school, massive queues at the petrol station or supermarket, and loss of power or internet connection. And then there are the alarming scenarios like swiftmoving flood waters, a loved one unable to get home, and leaving behind pets during evacuation. You can’t control the weather or when the next disaster will hit, but you can be aware and prepared. Get Ready

Queensland helps you to take 3 simple steps to protect what’s most important to you. STEP 1: Understand your risk. Your first step to being ready is to find out what, when, and where a disaster might happen, how severe it could potentially be, and if you would be affected. And whether you’re a homeowner or renter, check your insurance policies to see what you’re covered for. STEP 2: Prepare a household emergency plan. An emergency and evacuation plan will ensure everyone in your household knows exactly what to do if the worst happens.

You might want to involve your neighbours in developing your plan - neighbours who are elderly or have special needs may need your assistance. STEP 3: Pack an emergency kit. If, as a result of a natural disaster, you are unable to leave your home for an extended period, your emergency kit should contain a collection of essential items that will equip your household for at least three days of isolation. Or you can add additional supplies to create a comprehensive kit to ensure you are extensively covered for a longer period. Your kit should be kept in a sturdy waterproof container and stored in a safe place in your home.

U

NITED BY THEIR love of music, it was smiles all ‘round as locals and visitors arrived eagerly to the Festival of Small Halls held at the Rainbow Beach Community Hall for the fifth year, the third stop on their yearly Summer Tour. The Festival of Small Halls is produced by Woodfordia Inc and tours the East Coast of Australia, bringing world class folk artists into tiny halls across the country. With sausage sizzle and drink in hand (lovingly provided by Hall volunteers) with the promise of tasty cakes by Martine, guests mingled outside with the artists before the show started. This year brought Tullara and Andrea Kirwin to the Hall, and guests were not disappointed! Our wonderful MC, Lee McCarthy, welcomed local musician Aido Van der Vorst to open the show, surprising

the crowd with his raw vocals and guitar playing. The amazing Tullara followed and blew everyone away with her powerful blues/ folk vocals and guitar and banjo playing, and even a cheeky confession on stage! Tullara’s lyrics told tales of life experiences beyond her years. This young woman is one to watch! Local to the Sunshine Coast, Andrea Kirwin was joined by her beautiful fiancée, Claire Evelynn on the Celtic Harp and soothed us all with her unique voice and warm character, with music reminiscent of 70s island soul, just beautiful. President of the Community Hall, Elisa Seul says of the evening, “Simply brilliant. I can’t thank enough the volunteers, the performers and the organisers. The biggest thank you goes to everyone that came: the show was for you and your support means a lot to us.” Now, who’s coming next year!?

– BIRD OF THE MONTH –

Stay safe on our beautiful beaches W

Mistletoebird Melissa Marie

W

HAT BETTER WAY to celebrate this festive season edition’s bird of the month than to turn our attention to the mistletoebird (Dicaeum hirundinaceum). The male dresses in a Santa-esque red, white, and black outfit, while the female dons a more sedate grey and white attire, with just a dab of pinkish-red under the tail. This diminutive member of the flowerpecker family actually feasts mainly on the berries of the mistletoe plant, and has a biological set-up ideally suited to dispersing the mistletoe’s seeds for maximum effectiveness (which smartly is in its own self-interest!) They lack the muscular food-grinding gizzard of other birds, instead having a streamlined digestive system through which the berries pass quickly, excreting the sticky seeds onto branches. The seed can then turn quickly into a new plant,

ensuring more full bellies of berries in the future! Generally spotted in forests and woodlands, their flash of stop-sign red can usually be seen flitting around mature Eucalyptus trees as they are more likely to have become home to the semi-parasitic mistletoe plants, much beloved by the birds. August to April is the breeding season, sensibly coinciding with the fruiting of the mistletoe. and couples raise up to 3 broods per season. At around the two week mark, the baby birds will fledge. Land clearing has contributed to a significant decline in the habitat for the mistletoebird, but hopefully with more awareness of the delicate balance our ecosystems rely on, their future will be as bright as their beacon of feathers.

E ARE FAST approaching the summer holidays which as we know will mean huge numbers of visitors to our beautiful local beaches. With uncertainty around borders and restrictions the majority of those visitors are likely to be Queenslanders. Now, as we all know, Queenslanders have a reputation around the world for our easy-going, relaxed attitude to life. We say “She’ll be right” when we’re not 100% sure on something, but back ourselves anyway. But it doesn’t matter how fit and young you might feel, the ocean doesn’t discriminate – so it’s time to change our attitudes. Surf Life Saving Queensland’s 2021 Coast Safe Report revealed Queensland had suffered their second worst year of coastal drownings since recording began, with 20 people tragically losing their lives on Queensland beaches. Of these twenty, 75% were young men between the ages of 20-49 years old. Alcohol and drugs have contributed to 315 coastal drowning deaths nationally in the last 15 years (2004 – 2019), which accounts for almost one-fifth of all coastal drowning deaths. 90% of drowning deaths last year were male. The average age of people rescued last year was 24. “We have noticed a trend in young men undertaking risky behaviour on our beaches,” Surf Life Saving Queensland CEO Dave Whimpey said. “Men have been swimming at remote locations, swimming at night and also after consuming alcohol.” So let’s all consider how we can reduce our personal risk when visiting the beach. The key messages include deterring from swimming at night, not drinking and swimming, swimming between the flags, and only swimming at a patrolled location. “She’ll be right”, won’t save your life. It’s the risks you don’t take that make you safer. More information: www.lifesaving.com.au

Yacht Club turns By TCBYC

T

40

HIS YEAR THE Tin Can Bay Yacht Club celebrates its 40th anniversary with a party in December. 40 years ago, it took the combined efforts of a small band of dedicated sailors to bring the yacht club into being. The catalyst was the inaugural Tin Can Bay to Hervey Bay Race, held on the May Day long weekend in 1981. 118 yachts entered that first Bay to Bay and from Norman Point hundreds

of spectators watched a spectacular spinnaker start, in a sight never before seen in Tin Can Bay. The race was a great success. Entries grew to 162 in 1982 and 204 in 1983. Tin Can Bay was in need of a yacht club which was formed on June 28 1981. Clarrie and Doris Noble, Sandy and Louise Bauer, Sam and Nyria Murray, Harold Baggaley, Des and Jeanette Bickle, Norm and Jill Cummins, Des and Daphne White, Martin and Jenny Leschkau, Bill and June Croft, and Wayne Badley attended that first meeting. Clarrie Noble was elected the club’s first Commodore. The new club kicked off its maiden 198182 sailing season with a sail past on 20 September, 1981 with Clarrie Noble in his yacht Ida leading the fleet at Norman Point. On December 27-30 1981, the club held its first major event, the inaugural Cooloola Cup. Fifteen boats participated, including Left: Laying the foundations of the clubhouse

some of the biggest names in Queensland sailing. For the first five years, the club’s meetings and functions were held on the lawn of the Murray’s home until suitable premises were found. Despite many problems with the site in 1989 it was ready for a clubhouse. The initial building was never intended to be the final clubhouse, just a temporary home until a larger one could be built. The plans for this were eventually shelved when it was decided to extend the existing clubhouse. Over the years further extensions have been made and this year has seen additional alterations. Many members past and present have donated their time and skills to provide the facilities today’s members, guests and visitors enjoy, and their efforts have given members the foundation upon which to continue to develop the Tin Can Bay Yacht Club.

INISTER FOR TRANSPORT and Main Roads Mark Bailey MP has responded to the recent petition signed by 12,148 people calling for urgent action for safety improvements along our local main access roads. The Department of Transport and Main Roads’ (TMR) records indicate there have been four fatal crashes on Tin Can Bay Road between 2011 and 2019, and 13 fatal crashes for the 18-year reporting period between 2001 and 2019. “The Palaszczuk Government has...invested $300,000 in the 2021–22 to 2023–24 financial years to investigate potential locations for additional overtaking opportunities on Tin Can Bay Road,” Mr Bailey said. He states that the Queensland Government has allocated over $23 million in safety improvements on Tin Can Bay Road and Rainbow Beach Road from 2007 to 2021, including a $700,000 jointly funded project under Tranche 2 of the Australian Government’s Road Safety Program to install wide centre line treatment on a 36-kilometre section of Tin Can Bay Road, between Lillis Road and Dugong Street. Works will also include audio tactile line-marking on a 13-kilometre section of Tin Can Bay Road, south of Dugong Street. Mr Bailey noted other projects included in this allocation: • a $470,000 Safer Roads Sooner (SRS) project to upgrade the Tin Can Bay Road and Kin Kin Road intersection, with an extension of the existing turning lanes, as well as guardrail and signage improvements. Works are expected to be completed by mid-2022 • a $178,000 SRS project to install a mid-block pedestrian refuge on Rainbow Beach Road, between the Double Island Drive and Cypress Avenue intersections. Works are expected to be completed by mid-2022 • a $312,000 SRS project to upgrade the Tin Can Bay and Maryborough–Cooloola Road intersection. Works were completed in 2020 • the $18 million Coondoo Creek bridge replacement project opened in November 2020, which was a jointly funded project with the Australian Government contributing $5 million and the Queensland Government contributing $13 million.

Mr Bailey said that the recent $300,000 investment in planning will assist with identifying potential future upgrades and cost so that funding opportunities can be considered. He states: “TMR will continue to monitor Tin Can Bay Road and Rainbow Beach Road to ensure these roads remain in a safe and trafficable condition.”

Selling Queensland’s National Parks Greg Wood Long term Rainbow Beach resident The thoughts reflected in this article are those of the author. Rainbow Beach Community News welcomes all viewpoints and opinions.

C

AN YOU IMAGINE 10 private fully serviced luxury units at Poona Lake in Cooloola National Park? Imagine 10 more at Double Island Point. Private luxury cabins, built and operated on thirty-year land leases granted upon uniquely beautiful and fragile public sites. This might sound crazy but it’s about to happen. Without public intervention, five sites inside of Cooloola National Park will have private development leases finalised, developed, and operational in the first half of next year. The State Government has similar plans for a number of other Queensland National Parks. If you disagree with this, your help is needed to stop it. Go to www.protectparks.net for more detail on the proposal and how to object. Under this new plan, $600-$1000/night will buy a very special holiday in some of Cooloola National Park’s most special places. Additional to a good income, the “eco-tourist” clients will also need to be either oblivious or careless toward the damage their privileged experience

imposes upon significant site values and to public equity. Most people understand the obvious tragedy of degrading the Poona Lake basin’s pristine character and sensitive ecology with a 5000m2 accommodation area and a new service road for daily delivery of visitor “needs”. Those who require a 38m2 fully serviced luxury cabin and 5-star gourmet fare to enjoy Poona Lake may fail to comprehend the catastrophic change their extreme “needs” impose upon it. Double Island Point is a spectacular headland and an iconic public place. Private units with stunning ocean views will easily sell in a global marketplace that has few unspoiled places, and ever less that remain free to the public. How long then before 10 units become 20, and so on? At what point would public access to the headland be curtailed to protect private asset security and the amenity of high-paying clients? This is not wild speculation. It is exactly how free market forces impact upon public assets. The Government’s decision to create private development leases inside our National Parks was made without any public engagement. Two very short, very limited public engagements have occurred on operational aspects of the Cooloola development proposal. These are best described as public management processes rather than

Private development in our National Parks will be another cane toad. If it gets loose, we’ll never get rid of it or its toxic impacts. Please go to www.protectparks.net to help us stop this monster.

DroughtRunners appreciate donations Tony Stewart - 0408 767 930 rainbowfishing@southernphone.com.au

Contrary to what you see and hear on TV about flooding rains, well there are plenty of places in Queensland that have hardly had a drop in the last 12 months. This is why our Christmas run is headed to Winton and is being coordinated by Family Support at the Winton Council. Even though reports may say Winton had 80mm, just 30 kms away had nil - that is the irony of storm rain. It is only through wonderful donations that we are able to help those in need so firstly I must make mention of 2 x big fourfigure $ donations from Rotary Club of Bendigo and Tin Can Bay Holiday Park (Mel and Steve). Also last month we had very generous

donations from Pat and Harvey, Bob and Desley Elmer (plum puddings), Bill and Patty Watts, Heather Stevenson, Ian and Julie Davidson (Christmas cakes). From Tin Can Bay we had Colleen Phie, Brian and Nita Lindfield, L&M Gray with donations and toys, and a donation from Tin Can Bay Bakery. Also many thanks to all who donated to our bin at Cooloola Coast Realty near Woolies. Bill Neal and Jim Snee of Tin Can Bay continue to donate wooden toys and other items for us. The Bush Bundle of Brisbane have again donated around 35 presents for us and Big W Gympie have been very generous discounting 150 items I purchased there and are supplying Christmas paper and wrapping all presents. Wayne Kerle will continue our bottle and can collections with help from Bay Auto Tin Can Bay - many thanks. We will also be

sending to Winton $1000 in IGA vouchers, with $3000 in Visa cards as well as around 30 family hampers, detergents, toilet paper etc. We have also donated to feed the homeless in Gympie. Many thanks to our local publications for their advertising which is much appreciated. This will be our last run for some months

as it’s time for a break over summer, but we will still be looking at the skies and keeping all posted. It’s been a big and long six years. Have a safe & happy Christmas.

Wide Bay Training Area Range Tour Ross Carruthers TCB RSL

T

HE 2021 WIDE BAY Training Area Range tour is scheduled for Wednesday 8 December and will kick off from the Tin Can Bay RSL at 9am with a safety brief. All are welcome to join in the guided tour of the training area and its various ranges. Meet at the RSL at 9am for a safety briefing from Warrant Officer Gordon Duffy, Range Manager. Then join the convoy to the Wide Bay Training Area for the tour including a sausage sizzle lunch, concluding back at the RSL at around 2pm. Only four-wheel drive or all-wheel

drive vehicles are permitted on the range, however there is sure to be a ride available for those without these vehicles. All on the tour are required to wear enclosed footwear. It’s sure to be a great day so put your names down on the list at the RSL. I have fond memories of the time I spent at the Wide Bay Training Area when I was an infantry soldier with the 49th Battalion Army Reserve unit, also known as the Bushman’s Rifles. My first visit to the training area in 1984 stands out in my memory. I was a fresh-

faced private soldier in those days, in my third year with the Battalion, and on a mortar training course. The practical component of the course, including live firing, was held at the Wide Bay Training Area. The day of our first live firing exercise was a shocker with rain teeming down all day. I recall waiting for lunch to show up - cold, wet, still enthusiastic, but very hungry. I had visions of lunch being a droopy salad, however, I was very thankful to line up and be served a tremendous meal of curried

sausages and rice accompanied by a cup canteen of hot, sweet tea. It still ranks as one of my best meals ever. I’ll be on the tour, as will RSL Sub-Branch President, Don Holland, who was himself Range Manager at the Wide Bay Training Area for a number of years. Why not come along and prompt him for stories of his time managing the range. It won’t take much to get him going – believe me, especially after a couple of beverages back at the RSL after the tour! See you all there.

Heart Foundation Walkers are walking themselves happy! Maggie Travers

“W

E LOVE TO go a-wandering along Cooloola paths, And as we go, we love to sing, our wheelies up in front!” Four of us sang Judy Kiddle’s lyrics as the opener to our Q&A presentation. Thanks to the Cooloola Cove Residents & Friends Inc invitation to speak at their November Cuppa in Cooloola, the “Cooloola Cove Wheelie Walkers” gained another member, besides enjoying ourselves most enthusiastically. As another attendee asked several pertinent questions, we hope she will join us soon. Judy Kiddle and Barbara McKenzie rolled their wheelie walkers (rollators) up front for our presentation with Joan Barnier and myself. Joan is one of two original members still currently walking with the “One Step at

a Time Tin Can Bay” walking group. With the hotter weather now, the CC Wheelie Walkers have decided to meet half an hour earlier, i.e. 8am in December, at the bus shelter on Nautilus Drive outside the Cooloola Cove Shopping Centre, Mondays and Fridays. Already, Walk Organiser Judy K is more than halfway to receiving her first award for 25 walks. Congratulations to Melissa and Jack in the Tin Can Bay walking group, for reaching your 50 walks goal and award. As Dixie is walking in both groups her 100 Walks certificate, voucher and commemorative pin is in the mail. Well done! Both groups plan to continue walking during the festive season, weather permitting, but not on Christmas Day! The early Tin Can Bay group leaves the

Tom Kelly with member Arthur Leggo in Tin Can Bay on Remembrance Day

OR THE LEAD-UP to Christmas, our usual monthly morning tea was replaced with a gathering at a member’s home to watch the André Rieu spectacular DVD “Home for Christmas” which was filmed primarily at Rieu’s home, a romantic medieval castle in his hometown of Maastricht in The Netherlands. Our Christmas party will be at the Rainbow Beach Surf Club. Instead of our normal guest speaker, in November two members told tales of trips overseas. Val McClurg spoke of the “quick trip around the world” that she and Graham made in 2006 when they were invited to a wedding in the United Kingdom. During their three months away they especially enjoyed the Canadian Rockies which had

been on their bucket list, and also cruised the inside passage of Alaska. Katrina van den Brenk spoke of the year she lived as a fourteen-year-old with her Melbourne family on the island of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands, in the days before tourism there. With no schooling available at her level she joined the local women and girls in their daily activities in the village; and netball matches, Girl Guides and church at weekends. World War II veteran, Arthur Leggo, laid a wreath on behalf of the club at the Remembrance Service held in Tin Can Bay. We have now ceased our meetings for the year, but will return in February, each second Monday of the month at 2.00pm at the Sandcastle Motel in Tin Can Bay. These include a break for afternoon tea and a chat. For more details contact our President Daryl on M: 0416 739 324 or Secretary Katrina at cooloolaprobus@gmail.com

Community Pantry update from IGA, who has a forklift licence, volunteered to move it and with the help of Ben on traffic control, it happened in next to no time! In the last week of November, a team from Red Frogs visited Rainbow Beach as part of Schoolies Week and leader Tim, pastor of Victory Church in Maryborough, kindly donated a freezer so the pantry is now all set to start. Representatives of Tin Can Bay Community Church, who have been looking into providing a similar service to Tin Can Bay and Cooloola Cove residents, have also made contact with local supermarkets.

ETTING THE Rainbow Beach Community Pantry up and running has been a slow process, but Chappy Ronnie reports that all of the equipment needed to store donated goods that will be redirected to families who need a hand is finally in place. Several months ago a commercial refrigerator was kindly donated by Debbie Gordon from the Frying Fish Cafe, but transport was needed to move it the short distance up the road to the Church of the Good Shepherd. Stay

hydrated in the heat electrolytes that we lost sweating, that water unfortunately does not have.

Roberta Muzzarelli, Rainbow Naturals

S

UMMER IS FINALLY HERE!

Very hot and sunny days are forecast for the coming months and with it comes a need for everyone to keep hydrated and to safely enjoy the sun. During the day, it is essential to consider an electrolyte drink to replenish those important minerals that we have lost in the heat. Water alone is not enough - often it can increase our output of electrolytes and make us more thirsty while we drink more, because our body is trying to replenish the

Commercially available electrolytes are not in balanced ratios, often those products are very high in sugars or sodium without much consideration for calcium, magnesium and potassium. The other problems with some of these drinks are artificial sweeteners and dyes or even just ingredients with very long names that are far from natural sources and more harmful than helpful. Coconut water is a very good source of potassium, and also a small tip of a teaspoon of Celtic salt added to your bottle of water can be beneficial, however in most cases not enough.

Is your rainwater tank summer-ready? Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service

S

UMMER IN OUR region means sun, sand, surf… and storms and bushfires. Is your rainwater tank summer-ready and safely maintained? Residents are urged to keep their rainwater tank safe this summer with regular, effective maintenance. Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service Manager Environmental Health Greg Bennett said using rainwater tanks involved low maintenance, not no maintenance. “Like all drinking water supplies, rainwater systems need to be monitored; and the associated maintenance is not too onerous, but it is necessary,” Mr Bennett said. “Monitoring your rainwater tank is an important responsibility, consisting of a range of visual inspections rather than laboratory testing of rainwater quality. Maintenance is needed to maintain good water quality and prevent mosquitoes breeding.” Here are the top monitoring and maintenance activities that will help you keep your rainwater tank system safe: l Clean

gutters (six-monthly and after storms)

l Clear

first flush device of debris (monthly and after storms)

l Check

for evidence of animal, bird or insect access (six-monthly)

l Check

roof and gutters for accumulated debris including leaf and other plant material (six-monthly)

l Check and trim overhanging branches

(six-monthly) and repair downpipes, check condition of the roof (six-monthly)

the tank, siphon it out or completely empty the tank. Professional tank cleaners operate in many areas. l Prevent

tanks and gutters from becoming breeding sites for mosquitoes by insect screening.

“Rainwater is generally safe to drink providing it is clear, has little taste or smell, and is from a well-maintained system. However reticulated or ‘town’ water provides the safest and most reliable source of drinking water,” Mr Bennett said. “Queensland Health recommends that residents should use town water supplies for drinking, personal hygiene and food preparation if they live in areas that have access to these supplies.” Mr Bennett said that for most people, especially those who had been drinking rainwater for most of their lives, there would be very little health risk in drinking rainwater, provided the rainwater collection and storage system was well maintained. “However, there are some members of the community for whom microorganisms (such as bacteria) when present in rainwater could pose health risks, including infants, the elderly and immune-compromised people such as transplant, dialysis, HIV or cancer patients with severely weakened immune systems,” Mr Bennett said. “These people should consider disinfecting the water before drinking or cooking with it. You can do this by boiling the water.” Rainwater may be used without further treatment for flushing toilets, the cold water laundry tap and for watering gardens and lawns as these uses generally present a low risk of disease.

Before a bushfire Residents who live in bushfire-prone areas should consider installing a system whereby the pipes that direct the water from the roof to the rainwater tank(s) can be disconnected quickly and easily. This will prevent any material deposited onto the roof surface, as a result of a bushfire, from entering the rainwater tank. The disconnection should be made as soon as the threat of a bushfire is apparent to prevent windblown debris entering the tank and so that evacuation (if required) is not hampered. It may also be worthwhile sealing the openings to the tank to prevent contamination.

After a bushfire If the rainwater tank has not already been disconnected from the collection pipes, disconnect or redirect the pipes as soon as it is safe to do so. Once this step has been completed, then clean the roof and gutters thoroughly. Cleaning the roof and the gutters with water that is known to be safe is likely to be the most effective way of removing ash and other contaminants that might be present (don’t use a pressure washer

if you have an asbestos roof). Once the roof and gutters have been cleaned, the pipes that direct water to the tank can be reconnected. Ensure the first flush device, if installed, is empty and in good working order. If it has rained since the bushfire, and before the collection pipes have been disconnected or redirected, it is likely that ash and other contaminants will have flowed into the tank. In most cases, this will mean that the tank will need to be drained and cleaned (note that the water drained from the tank(s) may be used for non-drinking uses, e.g. watering the garden, dust suppression). Once the tank has been drained and cleaned, it should be refilled with water from a source known to be safe for drinking. If the bushfire has damaged the integrity of the tank, it is likely that the tank will require draining and repair or replacement. Take care working around rainwater tanks that have been damaged by a bushfire. For more information call Gympie Regional Council or visit www.health.qld.gov.au

SCHOOL NEWS

Farewell Mr Mileson! And Farewell to our Year Sixes By Principal Steve Bennett Rainbow Beach State School

A

S THE SCHOOL YEAR draws to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to wish our students, family and the broader Rainbow Beach community a happy holiday season. This is a time for us to celebrate and reflect on our achievements as a school. Over the coming weeks, we will be doing this by hosting our School Christmas Concert and engaging in end of year activities. It is also a busy time with our students participating in their intensive block of swimming lessons at the Rainbow Beach Aquatic Centre. I would like to congratulate our year 6 class of 2021 as they graduate from primary school and look ahead to a new chapter in their schooling and lives. I know that I speak on behalf of our students, staff and families in wishing them every success as they head to High School.

This year we will also be farewelling Mr Peter Mileson. I would like to recognise Mr Mileson’s contribution to Rainbow Beach State School over many years. Mr Mileson penned this message of thanks to the Rainbow Beach community: “I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the wonderful students, supportive families and talented colleagues with whom I have shared the last seventeen years. The school and the community have provided me with valued friendships, a great deal of happiness and many great memories. Thankyou Rainbow Beach.” Peter Mileson. I would also like to acknowledge the tireless work of our P&C who continue to provide significant support to our school. Finally, I would like to thank our local businesses and community members for their contribution. I wish you all a safe and happy holiday season and I look forward to seeing you again in 2022.

Mr Peter Mileson farewells Rainbow Beach school after 16 years

Update from Chappy Ronnie Ronnie Timperon

T

HE NEW GARDEN BEDS and vegepods at Rainbow Beach School have produced a wide variety of vegetables in Terms 3 and 4 with lettuce, cabbages, caulis, beetroot, baby spinach, carrots, zucchini, and onions being used in the school’s tuckshop or given away to staff and families. Grade 4/5/6 students have been cooking up a storm since the beginning of Term 4 in preparation for the parent/carer luncheon

that took place at the end of November. Menu items prepared by students included prawn cocktails, spinach and chicken dumplings, lasagne, zucchini and bacon quiche, chocolate beetroot muffins, and mini cheesecakes and fruit. Each student was also involved in a variety of roles including sound production, food preparation, setting tables, welcoming guests, serving food and presenting an item or a “Waiter, waiter” joke.

Students with the help of Mrs Dargusch recorded a video for their parents of what they loved most about them that was played during the luncheon. Many thanks to the P&C and Student Council who covered the cost of food and drink, Mr Mileson for allowing his

Books, camps, and a Sea Life adventure! By Tin Can Bay P-10 School

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE The Premier’s Reading Challenge is an annual initiative designed to encourage students to read for enjoyment and learning. 926 schools, including Tin Can Bay School, took part in the challenge, with students reading more than 2.39 million books! Congratulations to all the students who participated in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Students who successfully completed the challenge received a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier of Queensland. Students who did not read or experience the allocated number of books for their year level received a Certificate of Participation.

PREP SEA LIFE EXCURSION What a fantastic experience it was for the Prep students to head to the Sunshine Coast to visit Sea Life. It was a sensory overload with so many amazing things to see, touch, smell and hear. From the spectacular Seal Show to the touch ponds and the abundance of water creatures, we certainly had a jam-packed day. The sharks with their big sharp teeth, the mystical manta rays and the cute little penguins were amongst our favourite animals to stand and observe. Lots of tired little people on the way home who I am sure slept really well that night. We were all very proud of everyone’s behaviour which made for a most enjoyable day.

Above: Preps Ani, Hudson, Lincoln, Henry, Lewis, Kai, Nate and Memphis enjoying the Sea Life excursion

LEADERS CAMP The 2021 Leaders Camp saw students from years 5 through to 9 experience challenges that required a lot of determination and resulted in thorough excitement. Whether it was on mid ropes, bridge building or the giant swing, the teams were reliant on trust and teamwork. The giant swing challenged all students to have trust, not only in the equipment but also in the people. All students encouraged each other to do their best and to keep going. This boosted each student’s confidence and made them feel safe. Students were able to form connections with students in other grades in all team building activities. The camp also allowed students to step out of their comfort zones, teaching them to never give up and always try their very best. Students came to the realisation that part of being a great leader means respecting others by not judging their ideas or talking over them and listening to everyone’s ideas. Left: Students learning how to be great leaders on their recent Leadership Camp

YEAR 3/4 CAMP For our year 3/4 camp we headed to Mudjimba and stayed for two days and one night. We faced some hard challenges but also did a lot of fun activities like low ropes, beach games, round robin and, most importantly, the mud pit challenge. For the low ropes, you needed two spotters to catch you if you slipped or fell off the course. For the beach games there was a big bucket with holes in it. Each team used two smaller buckets and they had to go into the water and fill them up. Whoever filled up the bigger bucket first was the winner. For the mud pit challenge, we got very dirty! In the round robin there was dodgeball, t-ball, soccer and hockey. Camp quotes: • The beach was my favourite and I loved sleeping in bunk beds. Sophie S.

• I liked seeing all the animals, especially the kangaroos. Tyler B • My favourite activity was the low rope course. Kelsey C. • My favourite thing was the mud pit. Izaya B. • My favourite food was the garlic bread and we had delicious dessert. Cooper S. • My favourite food was the burgers. Layla H. • My favourite things were the food and the cabins. Angus B. • I never thought I would have to shower the inside of my mouth! Kirra K. Written by the Year 4 students Right: Dirty after the mud pit challenge

HE CLUB HELD its annual general meeting in late October with a new Executive and Committee being elected. The club was left in good order by the past Executive and Committee. Official club fishing trips have been few and far between due to wind and rain, however club members have reported some good catches of mangrove jack – a bit on the small size at times, but as the

warmer weather arrives the fish will get bigger and more active. Try using strips of poddy mullet on an unweighted rig, don’t hesitate to add some lead as the water movement increases, keep it as light as possible. Live baits have been working well, as have some of the plastic lures. By all accounts the Zerek Live Cherabin seems to be a favourite right now.

Catches Keely Rose Fishing Charters from Ethan with a big old man snapper caught on the Keely Rose

Catches of tailor are still being reported up to 60cm in length, bream are still in abundance with plenty being landed, summer whiting now starting to become more plentiful. Good sized flathead are also prevalent on the edges of drop offs during the last couple of hours of the outgoing tide. Whole prawns and pilchards have all been working well as has the Zerek Live Cherabin – yes, the same one the jacks like! There are also a few mud crabs around in the upper reaches of the creeks at the moment, but it seems to be how many pots per crab and not how many crabs per pot. Don’t forget it’s your responsibility to know the fishing regulations. NB Possession limit of 7 per person / 14 per boat (with 2 or more

people on board). Why not have a look at the government website and give yourself a quick refresher on the regulations. https://www.qld.gov.au/recreation/ activities/boating-fishing/rec-fishing/ rules/limits-tidal All boaties and recreational fishers are asked to keep a good look out for the large numbers of dugong and turtles that have been seen in our waters recently. Please maintain a good look out while motoring along and always be ready to take evasive action to protect them. www.tincanbayfishingclub.com.au Ph 0437 242 171 tcbfishingclub@bigpond.com

Fishing, Boating & the Great Outdoors

Thank you for helping keep our local prawns and waterways safe

Out on Baitrunner

1. Don’t use supermarket prawns as bait or use heads and tails as berley 2. Check your bait is from a bait shop or catch your own 3. Make sure you dispose of unwanted bait and seafood in the bin, not into our local waterways. Imported, raw prawns sold at supermarkets may carry diseases, such as white spot disease, which, if introduced into our marine environment, could have devastating consequences on our local prawn populations. These diseases only affect crustaceans, not humans. And cooking the prawns will kill the virus which means they are completely safe to eat. It only becomes problematic if raw prawns purchased from the supermarket are used as bait, as they could introduce diseases into the wild. Prawns bought from a bait supplier are safe to use, so it is recommended you use these or you could always catch your own. Catching fresh bait is a great way to improve your chances of catching fish and can be a fun activity for the whole family. The fresher the bait the more appealing it is to fish. If you catch your own bait, remember movement restrictions are in place for raw prawns, yabbies and marine worms caught in South East Queensland. https://www.daf.qld.gov.au/checkyourbait

Creative Cuts Blues Burners at the Country Club Originally formed 15 yrs ago on the Sunshine Coast this group of fine tuned musicians have a passion steeped in the Blues. They will take you on a journey from Chicago thru Texas into the American Deep South, playing the music of John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters to Stevie Ray Vaughn. A five-piece band that pumps with the groove and experience of Roger Koller on bass, aided by the backbeat drive of Ross Healey on drums. The powerful lead vocals and dobro slide guitar of Travelin’ Blues Man Mark Porter resonates with Gold Coast guitar slinger Doug Marsden and blues harp maestro

Peter Stuart. From 7pm on 3 December at the TCB Country Club.

Pink Ball Day a hit for Golfing Ladies

Helen Gordon Golf Committee Secretary

OUR GOLFING LADIES had a successful day raising money for the Jane McGrath Foundation which provides Breast Cancer Nurses for all communities. Our annual event, which is always well patronised, managed to raise $3000. Funds from the big raffle, competition fees, and the generous contribution of the Country Club all helped towards this figure. The Marina Bar and Grill once again provided very welcome prizes which we accepted gratefully. Our 2021 golfing year is coming to a conclusion and we are looking forward to all the visitors coming to the area joining

us to either play social or competition golf. Anyone with a Golf Australia handicap is welcome in our weekly competitions. Bookings for social and competition golf can be made through the Pro Shop by either ringing 0409 727 577 or visiting the shop. James takes bookings for players wishing to improve their skills or anyone who would like to learn to play golf. He will discuss the price of his lessons with you and arrange a time. The Specials Board is just outside the entry to the Pro Shop. Take a look at what is on the shelves and clothing racks, and you may find a Christmas present for someone. Until next month, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year to all.

Applications now open for Get Local Community Grants G

YMPIE REGIONAL COUNCIL is now accepting applications for funding as part of the Get Local Community Grants program.

The Get Local Community Grants program provides community organisations with support to host small-scale events across the region in alignment with Neighbour Day 2022. Neighbour Day is a national day of celebration which occurs on the last Sunday in March each year. It aims to increase positive and sustainable social connections between people and communities throughout Australia. Grants of up to $800 are available for eligible events that occur between 16 March and 13 April 2022.

Lucky door prize, raffle, lucky spot prizes while dancing, Monte Carlo prize.

Councillor Dan Stewart says the events that receive funding as part of the Get Local Community Grants program will provide many benefits to our region, including activating our public spaces, supporting local musicians and entertainers, and providing free or low cost events for the community to enjoy.

Admission $10 per person. For registering attendance please contact Julie on 0428 824 115.

“Putting on any public event isn’t cheap and the Get Local Community Grants program will help local community groups cover certain costs including venue hire, catering, entertainment, decorations, marketing and promotion, or traffic and waste management.

QLD Covid safe check in required. Covid regs.

“I encourage all of our local community organisations to submit an application and start planning your Neighbour Day celebrations today,” he said.

Please remember to bring your dance shoes in a carry bag and to wear normal shoes to the dance - when inside please change into your dance shoes so you can dance comfortably in dry soled shoes. You will stick to the floor and do damage to your knees if you wear normal rubber soled and non-leather soled shoes on the dance floor.

Applications close on Sunday, 19 December 2021. For more information, visit www.gympie.qld.gov.au/residents/yourcommunity/grants-and-funding or phone Council’s Community Development Team on 1300 307 800.

Rainbow Beach

Hello again to those in Rainbow Beach Land. What another beau ful month it has been. Hasn’t the year flown by! It is only four weeks to Christmas, and everyone is preparing for the fes ve season. Everyone is star ng to think of holidays and businesses are ramping up for the busy season. Let’s hope Christmas turns it on for everyone in town. Whether you’re leaving or trying to keep quiet. Tourism is what Rainbow Beach relies on. If we do not have tourists, we do not have essen al services, medical facili es, fire and emergency, essen al food services, and reinvestment into cri cal infrastructure. With con nual disrup ons of lockdowns, unpredictability and future uncertainty, the last thing Rainbow Beach can withstand is another unnecessary forced closure. Covid has shown that Rainbow Beach would not exist without tourism. Maybe it is me to have the discussion about an increased permanent popula on to withstand the uncontrollable factors. This way the town would support essen al business to invest into our community providing a be er living lifestyle overall. Anyway, enough about our “democra c” society, not sure what free choice is anymore?

As this is the last spiel for the year. I would like to thank everyone that has supported us. We have installed new equipment, upgraded sec ons and brought in a whole new range, with s ll more to go early new year. Thanks to the locals. Have a happy fes ve season and “stay safe” ll next year.

Matt, Bernie, Justin, Liam & our friendly staff at the IGA

Sports Report Nothing like the excitement of another cricket scandal before the next Ashes. When everyone thought Tim Paine was the leadership answer, nothing like a photo can sort it out. That is his personal life and my interest is in it is really low but I guess the media need something to report about. Isn’t the only higher role in Australia the PM posi on? I heard the same woman had interest in his brother-in-law. Fame hun ng? The Wallabies had a trip overseas and well that’s more than anyone in Queensland. They didn’t fly on the field but at least they could fly. Football. Does it make you jealous watching interna onal sports where stadiums are at full capacity? Experiencing the atmosphere of a packed house at a top flight EPL team would be thrilling. It is good to see Manchester United struggling like always. Ole is no longer at the wheel.

Chelsea shows off our fabulous new deli, ready for you to buy all your goodies for Christmas.
