New faces join the HT Team S EPTEMBER'S HT is a smorgasbord of history and art, peppered with personalities excelling in their fields or making a difference. Of course, this is all thanks to our advertisers and wonderful team.

Our controversial columns from Mungo McCallum have been absent these last couple of months. Mungo, we are thinking of you and hope you will be back on board soon.

You will notice the number of faces below have grown! I would like to welcome talented local writers

They join HT's story queen, Dale Jacobsen, who is off to the UK to meet two grandchildren for the first time, then plans to "follow her nose", campervanning around Scotland for a couple of months. Both Dale and her partner Doug have Scottish heritage, which makes the trip even more exciting.

It is also the holiday front here in September, and within the pages you'll find oodles of days and nights

Ducky Day T

HERE COMES A TIME when only a duck will do, and this is that time. The Zonta Club of the Blackall Range is raising money for the Fistula Clinic in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, run by Dr Catherine Hamlin. Catherine has worked tirelessly for over 50 years to provide free treatment to help women whose lives are destroyed by obstructed labour. She is also the author of the book Hospital by the River. So where does the duck come in?

Zonta is holding a Ducky Day Out morning tea on October 1 in the Lodge Hall, Tamarind St, Maleny. To help with the day, the Zonta club has managed to get hold of over 170 ducks, who will play a major role in the morning.

According to one of the Ducky Day

Out Co-ordinators, Tricia Steer: “While the ducks are very important we hope they will be well behaved enough to leave the morning tea alone, which will be home made by our talented members. But we do know that our ducks will be ready for some games and be part of the entertainment.”

Gillian Allen, the second coordinator said, “I have lived with these ducks for the past year and they are well and truly ready to play up on the day. I know that the ducks will enter into the spirit of things and make sure that everyone has a great time.”

Morocco Calling

ARLIER THIS YEAR HT printed an article about the community minded spirit of Maleny’s co-operative supporting a small project in Morocco. The Upfront Club hosted a dinner raising enough funds to repair the roof of a notable Kasbah in a small oasis village.

Janna Pameijer, well known sculptor and tutor has been a regular traveller to this region since 2011 taking with her fellow artists and friends.

Wendy Nugent and Janna returned in April to witness the progress of the funded repairs. The work entailed removing the earth from the sagging roof, replacing

broken rafters and returning the earth in mud form to the required thickness.

In keeping with traditional techniques and styles, two local artists were hired to design and paint the palm wood rafters with decorative motifs before they were to be installed.

Wendy and Janna helped the two young men, Amjid and Mohamed as they talked about their own art and their lives as painters in such a country.

On returning to Australia, Janna shared her adventures with Maleny artist and teacher, Sonja Georgeson inspiring another trip to Tamnougalt!

There they will be introduced to the local community drawing, painting and photographing as they go. Portraiture, landscapes and organic shapes and kasbahs, carpet patterns and delicious foods will be inviting subject matter for the artist’s eye.

The people of Tamnougalt know something of Maleny and of their encouragement and generosity of their ‘Aussie’ visitors. Moroccan hospitality is second to none.

Whilst locals are gearing up for the "Celebration of Books" in October, September brings another gala of literature with an interschool competition called the Gary Crew Hinterland Readers' Cup. Victoria McGuin talked to Conondale students in the lead up to the event.

N THE AGE OF COMPUTERS, it is time to be a champion for the humble book. To celebrate the enjoyment of sitting back and turning the pages of a great mystery, or adventure, or biography perhaps. Your eyes having a rest from the glare of a screen and enjoying the gentle vision of a page.

Books transport you, they create bonding experiences within families, they connect communities through libraries, cosy bookshops and book clubs – they even have an inviting smell!

Books can be rich in description, challenging, intricate; they can be enjoyable, educational, and superb for communication skills. Melbourne researchers have recently shown that children who are read to six to seven days a week can be almost a whole year ahead in development than those who are not read to.

Books can take the reader into vast imaginary landscapes, where they can create their own vision. How many times have you been disappointed with the movie version of a favourite novel? Your own imagination has created such a vivid and personal interpretation, that a film cannot match it.

As Albert Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge,” and those who read (and are read to) from an early age are not only helping themselves educationally, but stoking the fire of their originality, fanning their creative flames.

One local writer who believes in the power of literature for education and imagination is author Gary Crew. Since his first novel was published in 1986, Gary has specialised in Young Adult Fiction, Teenage Fiction and Children’s Picture Books, winning numerous awards for his work.

Based in Maleny, he loves to share his passion for literature and its ability to unite and stimulate people. So much so that in 2003, along with other Maleny community members, he created the Gary Crew Hinterland Readers’ Cup. The idea behind this was to halt the onslaught of technology and reinstate book in children’s lives.

Year Four Maleny students were invited to read a set of novels; then have a friendly competition answering questions about the stories. Whoever won would receive a perpetual cup until the next competition.

The annual event has since grown to encompass Maleny, Conondale, Montville and Mapleton State Schools, involving the regional community in something creative and unique. Sunshine Coast Libraries help to manage and coordinate, and local businesses and bookshops donate vouchers and books in the lead up to the competition.

Gary is keen, though, for the true meaning of the event to be a celebration of literature rather than interschool rivalry.

He believes the power of reading has been a uniting force within the community, engaging families and connecting children across the schools.

I went to watch Gary weave his literary magic over the Year Four students in both Conondale and Montville State Schools, and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. He has the ability to make a group of children sit (relatively) still for ninety minutes and discuss a story in great detail.

I watched as the students began to explore the connection between the images and words, which are vital to The Watertower, written by Gary and illustrated by Steven Woolman.

Gary emphasised that, “Everything about a story is driven by a question,” explaining how a book could fill people with doubt and wonder. He challenged them when they hurriedly guessed, rather than thought through an answer. He encouraged them to suggest adjectives, he pushed them intellectually; he was firm, fair and funny.

Once the story ended there was an animated discussion about what really happened, and Gary suggested the

children write a sequel during the following week and design their own cover.

He then asked, “Tell me one thing you have learnt today?”

The answers came quickly across the room and they were unanimous – Gary had helped them learn how to really read a book and look at the illustrations, seeing them come together to create the whole experience.

As Conondale student, Jackson, put it, “There’s a lot more information in the story from the pictures than you think.”

Curious about the effect of such a gripping and thoughtprovoking tale, I asked the Conondale class how they felt after reading The Watertower. Clinton said, “It made me feel….that you can make your own ending. It leaves you thinking.”

There were plenty of heads nodding, and Maia agreed, “It’s really mysterious – it makes you think.” Harley and Sacha said how much it made them want to read on, despite being “quite scared.”

Teacher, Mrs Mary, summed up beautifully by saying, “I like how Gary has made you justify your answers and sometimes doubt your first answers.

But also this has showed you, you don’t have to be afraid to suggest ideas.” This was a perfect summation, because the beauty of this book is that it is open to individual interpretation and imagination.

As Gary left Conondale, he asked the students, “Do you have a war cry? You must have a war cry,” warning them they have stiff competition.

Despite Gary usually encouraging literature rather than rivalry, it seems he sometimes can’t resist a good battle either. And, after being a part of some of these sessions, I’m wishing I could join forces with them.

The Gary Crew Hinterland Readers’ Cup will be taking place on Friday 12th September, at Maleny State School in the main hall at 9am. May the best book lovers win!

Not quite Cricket!

Locals, celebrities and politicians battle it out at the fourth annual Charity Cricket Match, to be held on Saturday 27th September at Maleny Showgrounds.

Leeza Baric investigates the shenanigans of the two colourful captains honouring the memory of their friend and local Maleny resident, Dr Peter Oliver, who passed away from lung cancer without ever having smoked a cigarette.

A gladiatorial Charity Cricket Match played in Pyjamas!

Simon Denver’s Maleny Maulers versus Andrew Powell’s Celebrity Eleven at a fun, family day out sponsored by the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club which has raised nearly $10,000 in the past three years.

Simon has been recognized by Arts Queensland as a “cultural champion” for his work as a playwright, director and actor. He has challenged our Member of Parliament, Andrew Powell (LNP), to a game of “not quite cricket” since 2010. Both teams are striving for the coveted “Golden Thong Trophy” and to raise awareness and funds for research into lung cancer.

Who will be attending the Charity Cricket Match?

Andrew: “The word is spreading, We’ve got the Deputy Premier [Jeff Seeney] lined up who is a former Grade Cricketer, the Minister for Sport, Steve Dickson, a couple of colleagues, Steve Minnikin from Chatsworth in Brisbane and Verity Barton from Broadwater on the Gold Coast. I sprinkle the team with local dignitaries as well. I may even have an Australian Representative Cricketer playing in my team this year. I won’t give a gender either. Got to keep some secrets.”

Simon: “People attending will be from anyone on the dole, to actors, to highly paid professionals, radio celebrities, doctors and farmers...cricket is one of the great equalizers of society!”

What can people expect on the day?

Simon: “Don’t expect cricket! It’s sport mixed with Marx Brothers...but Cricket will win. You can expect lots of entertainment, with actors and radio DJ’s commenting on their opposition’s team.”

Andrew: “I’d like to say that we don’t take the game too seriously, but I’m ultra competitive. Tranquil Gardens sponsor $50 for a six...as did Trevor Sommers of Witta Fuel at the last match. I throw in a bit of a sponsorship for every four, so there’s a lot of heavy hitting. We’ve seen a couple of cars and caravans dinged from balls going over the fence, including a Mercedes [Benz] last year.”

“I think the funniest thing is seeing a bunch of grown men and women running around in their pyjamas on the cricket pitch.”

Simon: “I look forward to seeing Andrew Powel have yet another melt-down when he loses and look forward to the image of him pounding the ground shouting, ‘Why, why, why!’”

Andrew: “Simon’s entitled to his opinion and Simon being the creative individual he is sometimes lives off in la la land. I think he’s got it completely wrong, he’ll be the one doing that this year, that’s if he can pick himself up off the floor after being smashed.”

How did the Charity Cricket Day start?

Andrew: We were supporting the Pyjama Foundation, hence why we wear pyjamas on the day... but we now focus on the Australian Lung foundation because our good friend and local resident, Dr Peter Oliver, eventually succumbed to lung cancer not from being a smoker himself.

With his passing [the charity day] has taken on an extra special meaning.

What sort of man was Peter Oliver?

Andrew: “Quirky. There are some great stories about him.

Very knowledgeable, very intelligent but also very personable, and as a teacher he had a way of communicating scientific information to a wide audience...used to sing songs about Dugongs and those sort of things.”

Simon: “He was the heart and soul of Maleny.”

Before Peter died he campaigned for more funds into research because of the disparity between money spent on anti-smoking campaigns compared to the minute amount spent on research.

In 2012, Peter wrote a diary entry to The Hinterland Times.

“I’d like to do something about lung cancer, this bastard of a thing that has been trying to rule my life. I need to raise awareness about it, raise funds, and advocate for more research funds for early detection and treatment.

research just isn’t fair, and that nobody deserves lung cancer… Perhaps, in time, well after my time I am afraid, we may all breathe just a little easier.”

Any last words from Andrew and Simon?

Andrew: “Great cause, sad in some ways, it’s now very much in memory of Peter, so there is that element to it but it’s so much fun and increasingly becoming a family affair.

Simon: “We came, we saw, we mauled!”

Arley Farm: beef cattle property, landcare example and artist’s retreat

Bought in 2000, they have transformed one of Maleny’s first dairy farms into a beef producing operation and farm-stay accommodation which also hosts the winner of the national Sunshine Coast Arts Prize.

T’S EASY TO SEE how Arley Farm stole Fiona and Peter’s hearts. The first thing you notice as you drive in is the majestic, old fig tree. Its motherly limbs stretch out to welcome you to one of the most scenic properties in Maleny.

Originally the 160 acre farm had been in the Lawley family for three generations, bought by Ernest and Minnie Lawley in 1914. It became known as ‘Arley Illawarra Stud’, one of Australia’s leading stud farms. They produced award winning cream, butter, milk and prize cattle but stopped operating as a dairy in 1998 prior to deregulation of the dairy industry.

Maleny had over sixty dairies but only about six remain.

After a honeymoon period, the realisation set in that it takes hard work to maintain a good marriage/farm. They decided to produce beef using the famous red cattle, Santa Gertrudis.“When we first came we had the house to sort out sheds to build, fencing, and the task of learning to work with cattle.”

“We used to lie in bed and read about how to raise beef cattle. We each had a book, the same book. When we first got

the property it was a steep learning curve and we met older real farmers in Maleny who coached us a lot,” Peter reminisces.

Today they have forty two breeders and ninety young steers and heifers, this year they introduced Angus bulls to keep up with market demand and try something new.

Peter and Fiona lovingly restored the old Lawley Queenslander cottage into a charming home and The Old Dairy accommodation is as warm and inviting as its owners.

They planted meandering gardens with large bee sculptures, and a sculptural display of weathered posts from the original fences that once kept the cows in.

Peter’s background in Agriculture Science has encouraged him to undertake serious re-vegetation and improvements over the past fourteen years in collaboration with the Landcare groups. He went along to the local Catchment Group meeting and was persuaded to become the President.

When they first arrived there was a lack of trees in some areas of the property, but Peter grew and planted thousands of trees along the creek banks and gullies to protect the environment and make the farm easier to run.

The farm has numerous natural springs, two creeks including the Obi Obi, four dams and adjoins the old weir, which in the past supplied Maleny township with its drinking water prior to a pipeline being built.

The farm-stay accommodation came about by accident.

The existing house was too small for their children, family and friends when they all came to stay, so Peter cleaned out the old dairy and completely renovated it for living purposes.

“Somebody gave us a kitchen...and then we decided we would turn it into holiday accommodation.”

“We opened The Old Dairy in 2006, that same year the Sunshine Coast Arts Prize was launched and it was chosen by Council to host the artist’s residency, where the winner comes to stay and work for two to four weeks.”

It is a national competition and the original arts prize for the Sunshine Coast region. The converted Old Dairy was perfect not only for its inspirational views, but for the large studio space that artists have to work in, originally the milking area. The walls are lined with beautiful artworks and a large wall is dedicated to the hundreds of children who have stayed and expressed their enjoyment in pictures.

People come from all over Australia and many areas of the world to stay on the farm. “We get a lot of families with children who want to come for a farm experience and collect fresh eggs, see the platypus and roam the lush green rolling hills. A lot of people who come, somewhere in their history, have been brought up on a farm or their family had a farm.

We really enjoy having them stay here.”

It’s easy to fall in love with Arley Farm, the beauty, the history, the converted old dairy that is space for creative people to find expression. If the Stevens ever propose to offer Arley Farm up for somebody else to love and protect it, I’m sure there would be many people willing to say “I do.”

Art works by the forty finalists will be on display at the Caloundra Regional Gallery until Sunday 26 October. The gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm.

It’s rare to meet someone who knows what they want to do with their life from an early age and persist through all odds until they achieve their goal. Charla Tuncdoruk, a young woman (with a wise old soul) from Maleny has done just that. Now permanently employed in her dream job, Charla talks to HT before she flies back to Germany this month.

ROM THE TIME she got it in her head that she was going to be a dancer, that’s all she thought about.

There was no stopping her,” says Charla’s Mum,

Rebecca.

Charla now lives in Germany working as a dancer for the State Theatre Nuremberg Ballet but the road to success has required discipline, dedication and persistence. She says dancing is not the big fairytale people think. “It is a very rewarding job but it’s not an easy one.”

At seven years old Charla started ballet lessons because her friends and cousins were doing it but by 12 years it had become her passion. She studied ballet full time from 7am to 12 noon daily, at what was then known as Phantom Ballet in Landsborough. High school was completed part-time at Maleny High school and by Distance Education.

There were some people who tried to discourage Charla from dancing but she says, “The thing I would say to young people is don’t listen to what anyone says to you... Just keep in your head what you want to do and stick with it.”

At fifteen, Charla was offered a half-fee scholarship at the Australian Dance Performance Institute in Brisbane where she travelled by train daily. That in itself was a challenge because of the transport system on the hinterland.

She worked part-time at Tranquil Park in the afternoons, evenings and weekends to pay for her ballet studies. In her graduating year, the dance teacher invited a small number of students to travel around Europe to attend auditions and dance competitions.

Charla didn’t have the money to go but many locals donated money to help Charla pay for her ticket. “One man gave me $500 and I didn’t even know him.”

After the trip to Europe, Charla was offered a place at two ballet schools. When she came home she said to her mother, “I’ve been offered this spot and I’m moving to Switzerland.”

“Actually, no you’re not,” her mother replied.

“No, no, no, but I am and I’m moving in three months.”

Rebecca said, “I don’t have the money for you to move to Switzerland. How do you expect this to happen? You are seventeen. How do I just give my daughter to the world, to leave, fly, be free.”

“But she was so determined...then she got a sponsorship for living expenses by her boss, Joyce at Tranquil Park. So I didn’t really have a choice.” Rebecca smiles. At seventeen she moved to Basel, Switzerland.

Charla explains the difficult situation here in Australia for dancers. She was forced to find work overseas because in Australia there is the Australian Ballet, the Sydney Dance Company, Queensland Ballet, and a couple of smaller contemporary companies who don’t receive a lot of funding.

“Over there it’s inbuilt into the culture and we have these old theatres and a lot of people donate money, and have sponsors such as the Friends of the Ballet.”

“What parents don’t realise,” says Rebecca, “is that they pay all this money for their children to do dance lessons but there are not many jobs for dancers in Australia.”

After nine months at the ballet school in Switzerland, Charla was offered a six month contract at the contemporary company in Nuremberg which has turned into a four year stint.

She was the youngest person in the company, couldn’t speak the language and was at times very lonely. “It was scary because I was the baby and a guest [on contract]. It was only supposed to be for six months for the Nutcracker production and then people got injured and needed me to stay. I got to perform some really cool things that usually a guest would not be able to do.”

When she was lonely Charla focused on her dance and “Skype has been a godsend,” says Rebecca.

Then she met a boy!

Sven, a stage technician “was holding my ladder for me in one of our performances.”

Meeting Sven has made life in Europe more enjoyable.

Rebecca said at first she was wary but is glad that now Charla has another family over there and enjoys time with Sven’s family. With Sven’s help, Charla can now speak, read and write German.

What’s in store for this amazing young woman who has persisted through all odds to make her dreams happen? “I’m just at a point where I want to do all the things that make me happy...I’m just going with the flow.”

HERE’S A NEW WALKWAY along the Obi Obi Creek in Maleny, plans for a Montville Retirement Village, chapels opening and a bridge is back!

Work commenced late May on the Chinaman Creek Bridge on Kenilworth–Skyring Creek Road, they replaced the steel deck and widened it to two lanes. The good news for motorists is that it is now open.

Plus local Mapleton residents would have been alerted to the recent excavation of the Lily Pond on the corner of Delicia and Obi Obi Roads.

However, there's no need to be alarmed ...

A local business, owned by local residents Frank and Sara Feldman, is currently located in two offices within the Mapleton shopping complex on Obi Obi Road.

Frank and Sara have recently purchased the corner block and are at present excavating the pond to make ready for a new multi-purpose office.

The initial work currently being carried out on the pond includes the clearing of weed, mud and debris and rest assure no wildlife have been harmed during this process. When the excavations have been completed, the pond will be fully restored to its original beauty whilst adding to the natural ambiance which Mapleton is renowned for.

The building which was approved by local

council some time ago, when the former owner of this site intended to build a restaurant, will go ahead but will be used for offices instead.

It has always been Frank and Sara’s wish to bring business to Mapleton and to be able to employ a local workforce.

Building their own office, whilst restoring one of Mapleton’s ponds for the future, is an added bonus.

When life gives you scraps ... make quilts!

HE MALENY ARTS and Crafts Group will be holding their highly regarded quilt show on the September 27 and 28 at the Main Pavilion, Maleny Showgrounds from 9am to 4pm each day.

The quilting group have been very busy, there will be a display of numerous quilts from the small to the large, the traditional to the modern.

Viewers can vote for their favourite quilt and the quilt with the most votes will win Viewer's Choice.

There is also a raffle with great prizes plus a Handcrafted Bag Tombola where participants have the chance to win the bag of their choice.

This year you will be lucky enough to see Robyn Martin’s First Prize Winning Quilt “Audrey” on display.

Their third quilt show is targeted towards anyone that appreciates quilts. Craft demonstrations include spinning and weaving, English paper piecing and other handwork.

The quilt show is different this year - it is their first with a theme. When Life gives you Scraps Make Quilts is a well known saying in quilting, suggested by life member Pam Doyle.

The history of quilting shows that it was initially the use of scraps of fabric and clothing to make a warm cover for winter. Although quilts today are not so utilitarian, we still find ourselves with scraps of fabric to put together to save wastage.

Our members have many different reasons to love quilting. Some find it peaceful but challenging, having the joy of accomplishing and creating an individual item. Some find it therapeutic working with fabric whilst others enjoy the social aspect and the caring and sharing of other quilters.

Either way, it is the ultimate in upcycling! Make sure you pop into the showgrounds later this month and see just what beautiful creations have been made out scraps.

wonderful artist as their ‘Memmie’ (a version of the Swahili word Memsahib—Sarah was born in Kenya). But discard the image of grey hair and a rocking chair and insert one of a yoga-teaching, exotically-clad lady who is living every moment.

Sarah explains that these small people have enriched her life in so many ways. “I believe personal growth to be vital for all people, but that being honest about emotions and how you process them can bring great progress, not just for yourself, but for those around you too.� She has realised that little children just express emotions and then move on— “...they cry when upset, but can be happily laughing two minutes later or vice versa. They have the capacity to live in the moment, which usually gets lost as we grow up and become embroiled in the expectations of daily life�. Sarah has taken these ideas and is conveying them in some of the new paintings, while others are a riot of colour and unbridled joy. She refers often to the term “playfulness� in these works, which is obviously apt.

The exhibition title alone raises a smile along with intrigue. “Dust Off my Soul refers to uncovering the layers we all acquire in life and paring back to the inner persona, while a Cat Called Teacup was coined by one of my grandsons who mistakenly thinks his neighbour’s cat is named Teacup!� A small joy shared. “Dust Off my Soul and a Cat Called Teacup� opens at Art on Cairncross on September 13 at 3 pm and all are welcome along to meet the artist from Thangool in Central Queensland and delight in her paintings. The exhibition continues until September 28.

When asked how she began competing Leonie said, "My parents started me off, then my best friend started showing as well, so I got more involved, and now it's more passion than anything."

The teen works on a cattle property in Conondale that runs Santa Gertrudis as well as Charbray/Charolais. She also showed cattle for a droughtmaster stud at the EKKA, "At smaller shows I usually show my lead steer Henry, or for my friend who has Simmentals."

She says although she has been judging for six years, she has only really been serious about it for the last four.

Leonie explains how the system works, "It's a points based thing, so we are scored on our placings of four animals, then we are given the

Val, Jerome and his dog with two of his 4 tractors

I

N OUR TINY hamlet in the Charente region of France we have five neighbours.

In the first small house live Eloise and her partner Amaund, a young working couple. They have a new puppy but he is not a house dog, no, he’s a hunter so he lives in a dog house in a pen in the back yard. He would love to be molly coddled but this is not the French way for the serious business of raising a hunter!

Opposite we have Vincent, a young single teacher with a lovely throaty sports car which he loves to drive with proper French élan. From time to time he has extended company, a lovely young lady, or is it a series of lovely young ladies. Ah… such proper French élan!

Down the road a bit resides Monsieur et Madame M, who keep a beautiful house set in a beautiful garden. They keep the village looking spruce all year with trimmed green lawns and gorgeous seasonal flowers. “Mon Dieu” said Val on our arrival so many months ago…. “we simply can’t let the side down”.

So Val matches seasonal flower with seasonal flower and I drudge with the mower. Our reward: gracious nods and a few words of approval, en passant!

Where the hamlet lane peters out to a rough farm track we find “les anglaise”, Sally and Colin. They are rebuilding a tumble down barn into a gorgeous farm home. Everything one reads about the “joys” of renovating in rural France is absolutely true, they say.

Jerome, the farmer, lives between us and Sally and Colin.

In my naïve way, I had envisaged Jerome as being the latest incarnation of a long line of farmers tilling the same village patch, century after century. Well, his grandfather owned a small farm just outside our commune of Juignac.

Claude, his father, was also a farmer who in 1972 purchased a different patch in the Juignac area. Twelve years ago, when Claude retired Jerome bought his 60 hectares. He has since built this up to 100ha and would 16

buy more if it was available.

My ignorance knows no bounds! I assumed that 100ha must be a fairly small farm. Not so! Amazingly, a whopping 96% of the 490,000 French farms have less than 200ha, with 40% less than 20ha! Jerome is up there in the top 20% of farms that are 100ha or more.

Now anyone who has driven in rural France will allow that an awful lot of tractors roar around on French roads. I can now reveal why this is so!

Jerome has an astonishing 32 separate land titles spread over six major but quite separate concentrations which are kilometres apart. His smallest field is just 0.25ha, the biggest 13ha with an average of 3ha.

Apparently, this is quite a common structure for farms.

So he has to tool around the country lanes on one of his four tractors just getting to the different sections of his farm. All the other farmers are busy doing the same thing.

And of course there is the traditional two hour French lunch break. Just think, come noon, 490,000 farmers jump on their tractors and head home for an apero and four course lunch!

Claude’s retirement interest is in wood. He supplies split fire wood, however, his greatest pride is his 85 year old farmyard saw mill. It’s a beauty, a two meter high bandsaw arrangement complete with baling wire repairs and chocked with wood blocks where necessary.

With this he produces oak planks and beams to order. In fact, Claude supplied the new oak beams for Sally and Colin’s rebirth of the old barn. Delivery would not have been difficult as the old barn is only ten metres from the old saw mill.

All you old farmers suspect that French farmers are handsomely subsidised.

Last year the European Community gave France 11 Billion euros as the farm subsidy. With 490,000 farms this means an average subsidy of E22,000 per farm.

Jerome points out that the subsidy is compensation for the low controlled price that he gets for his wheat, maize and sunflower. The price is set at the going world rate for the various commodities. He must also abide by a contract with the agricultural department enforcing such things as the maintenance of ancient walkways, riparian zones and the use of pesticides. That can’t be bad.

As France is the second biggest European economy much of that 11 billion euro package would come from France itself. So France gives the EU heaps of money, the EU then gives France heaps of money back.

Then 490,000 French farmers have multipage agreements with the French Agricultural department. All that lovely paperwork for all those lovely bureaucrats!

It’s a lovely system! It’s French!

Judith Laws: Hinterland artist, Judith Laws has retold and reimagined the tale of Eliza Fraser, a woman shipwrecked off the Queensland Coast in 1836. Visit the exhibition of her series in September.

J

UDITH IS A LONG-TERM Hinterland resident with an enviable career as a professional artist. She has painted a wonderful series of mixed media works which follow the often gruesome tale of Mrs. Fraser, incongruously set against the stunning beauty of the massive sand island we now know as Fraser Island.

Mrs Eliza Fraser accompanied her husband Captain Fraser, master of the barque Stirling Castle which was wrecked on a reef off the shore of Queensland in 1836. Mrs. Fraser, the Captain and some of the crew escaped in a long boat – other members of the crew in a pinnace. After four days at sea Mrs. Fraser gave birth to a baby who did not survive. (Mrs. Fraser varies this account.)

After thirty-two days at sea the long boat finally beached on Great Sandy Island, now known as Fraser Island. They beached not far from Waddy Point.

In Mrs Fraser's account, she says they were captured by local inhabitants and the shipwreck party was divided and taken by a different tribe, stripped of their clothing and treated harshly.

Judith explains “I have been intrigued by the whole saga and it has appealed enormously to my imagination. I feel that she (Eliza) must have had tremendous courage to survive the many hardships that she endured, including the death of her husband, Captain Fraser, by spearing. Her eventual rescue by the convict John Graham is recorded in history as one of many versions.”

"Malnourished, mistreated and despairing, Mrs. Fraser was certainly, in my eyes, a figure to be pitied. She was on Fraser Island for six weeks and when finally rescued was a mere skeleton with flesh hanging off her bones."

"Many different accounts, conjectures and books have been written about Mrs. Fraser and they have appealed to my imagination and as a woman and an artist."

Indeed, one of the fascinating aspects of the story is the range of varying accounts, some written by Eliza herself, but all indicate a remarkable story of survival.

In conjunction with her husband, Rex Backhaus-Smith, Judith has also published the book “Face of Tragedy” which is richly illustrated with the paintings and reveals some of her thoughts about and empathy for the island’s namesake.

The book sensitively portrays Judith’s paintings with emphasis on Eliza’s face, showing her great courage and despair.

Mayfield Centre celebrates Ten Years

History repeats itself

As the Mayfield Centre celebrates ten years, Victoria McGuin met up with owner John Hargreaves, Chris De Lisle, who runs The Gallery, and Shiralee Cooper, who has the beautiful glass art gallery Illume in the centre.

They all have extensive knowledge and personal stories of the building and its past.

TEPPING INTO The Gallery in the Mayfield Centre is a visual, sensory pleasure at the best of times, but going there to learn about the history of the very foundations is something else.

Long before the present building we see today, this charming part of Montville was home to a selection of popular guest houses, which Shiralee heard people say was, "the heart of Montville". The Mayfield was one of these guest houses, situated where the Montville Inn now stands, with a six-hole golf course in the grounds. Next door to The Mayfield was a small shed growing fresh flowers in wooden

boxes for the Brisbane Markets.

Another venue of great popularity was Manjalda, where the Mayfield Centre is now situated. It was a place to come and relax in the crisp mountain air, play a spot of croquet or perhaps go for a swim. As John explained, "People would come from Brisbane on a Saturday morning, arrive at Palmwoods and drive up in the old T Fords for bed and breakfast."

Manjalda was built in 1915 for Mr. Fred Pickering, a mercantile agent, and his two sisters, and was originally designed to accommodate 35 people. Initially, it was not

enclosed underneath, and there are stories of echidnas frequently digging up ants’ nests below.

In addition, the cattle dogs working the bullock trails would enjoy camping out there, and as a result Fred and his sisters had great problems with fleas. Fred would spend many of his weekend visits (he lived at Sandgate) spreading sump oil and ‘Insectobane’ to save his sisters, who ran the boarding house, from the misery of continuously itching and scratching.

In the 1940s, Manjalda was owned by Mr and Mrs John Porter, who built the swimming pool, the pool room and additional guest rooms downstairs with the help of their son, Bill. The wages in those days was reported by staff member Mrs. Lloyd to be £3.6s.9d ($6.70), with keep, for a 5½ day week.

Guests arrived to Nambour or Palmwoods Railway stations and were met by local storekeepers such as Alf Smith who had the use of his Dad's Albion and also the postman, Owen Callaghan who was the mailman.

These two men met the train at Palmwoods daily as Alf's father, Henry had the store at Palmwoods as well as the Montville store and Alf transported both goods and passengers up the Razorback. It was often the highlight of a Manjalda visit, the womenfolk were known to have joked.

Owen met the mail train and often delivered passengers to the guest houses.

Towards the end of Manjalda’s history as a guest house in 1968, there were reputedly up to 90 guests in the Christmas holiday, enjoying the tennis court, croquet lawn and pool, Continued next page

with the added enticements of local bush walks and an excellent meal upon your return.

And before the T Fords or the bus, it was the horse and cart.

Shiralee smiles as she adds, "Manjalda had a health resort feel, with hot and cold running water, which was a bit of a novelty then, and delicious fresh produce, thanks to the volcanic soil in the area." It also hosted political party conventions and was very popular with honeymooners.

Manjalda opened out onto Montville Village Green, which was historically a turnaround for bullock teams loading cedar logs for the Coast. There was also a chute nearby which would drop timber down into the gulley in Hunchy.

The Village Green was a hub of activity over the years, including hosting car rallies (once it was completely covered with Ferraris), school races, village picnics and cricket matches between Montville and Mapleton.

From the Manjalda guest house itself, the views were breathtaking: the deep blue ocean on the horizon, the swooping undulations of Hunchy Valley giving the outlook a unique depth. John feels the vista was (and still is), “almost as vivid as a child’s view of the world. Bright green grass, clear blue sky...perfect.”

However, the rise of the affordable Holdens meant people could travel further afield, and the Guest House era was

slowly brought to an end.

In 1974 it was time for the history of this building to change…Enter Gordon De Lisle, a celebrated photographer from Melbourne, and his wife Cynthia.

They had built their own house in Buderim and then, according Chris, felt a bit bored, so Cynthia suggested creating an art gallery.

It was a success and the De Lisles decided to expand. As luck would have it, they heard Manjalda was for sale. Chris laughs as he remembers the story about the previous owners, who were perhaps slightly eccentric, "There was a prawn trawler - you know how big they are - in the front of the building; so people had to walk over it to get in the house!"

However the prawn trawler couldn’t diminish the fact that this original colonial building had wonderful character, and they adapted the twenty-room guest house to include an art gallery. John remembers the gallery well, including the extension the De Lisles added. "It was magical. You would walk down the gallery with paintings either side, and at the end there was this huge wall of a window with a stunning view. It looked like a painting itself that changed every time you visited."

Of course, nowadays, the new Mayfield Centre has been designed to maximise these magnificent views from The Edge restaurant, the Patisserie and Chocolate shop and many other quirky and individual boutiques.

"Back then in the 70s, no-one could see that view, except from this large window in the gallery, so it was very popular," concludes John. Indeed, the view and the gallery's reputation meant that Cynthia and Gordon had a coin collection box, for donations upon entry. In their last year there, they received a substantial (some would say vast) amount. "That just shows the number of people coming through and appreciating the view and the art!" says Chris.

Sadly, in 1995, a fire put paid to all that rich history.

John recalls being over the road when his wife June said, “I think the gallery is burning down.” He replied, “No, they’ll be burning rubbish.” But when he stepped outside and saw “green, black and yellow smoke,” he realised the worst. Within half an hour it was gone made from timber, with a mountain breeze fanning the flames, it had little chance of survival.

It was a dramatic and traumatic day that saw Joan and Tony lose their home and gallery, and it took time to rebuild their lives. Luckily they had another gallery in Noosa that needed their attention, and this helped

John bought the land where Manjalda and the gallery once stood, and decided to create a new art space as part of his Mayfield Centre. He contacted Chris, whom he’d known as a young man helping his parents in the gallery, and told him what was happening.

Chris had gone from managing a farm in Maleny, to working full-time in art, before joining the David Hart Gallery in Noosa. When he heard from John, he realised it was time to go full circle and create a new chapter for his family history. Same spot, new art space.

“I couldn’t resist coming back and going with that family tradition,” he smiles. An artist in his own right, his gallery feels fresh and vital, but with a sense of peace, helped in no small part by that magical view that captured his parents all those years ago. Once you step into The Gallery, it’s highly likely you will feel it too.

‘Green Art’ has joined Sculpture on the Edge 2014 A

FTER A MILD WINTER and welcome recent rain, the Hinterland Spring is here, the smell of blossom is everywhere and the hills greener than ever. The creative juices are flowing with many organisations planning special events for .. ‘HinterLand’ .. a Celebration of Place, Art and Creativity throughout the Sunshine Coast hinterland, taking place from September 19 to October 26.

The annual program, Sculpture on the Edge has been extended to provide an exciting time for artists and a stimulating and fun Springtime for art lovers in this magical area.

Support from the Regional Arts Development Fund has enabled Arts Connect Inc to invite four artists to create ephemeral works at Tamarind Retreat. Inspired by the history and the ambience of Tamarind three visual artists and one sound artist will be working on site from 25th September for one week.

You are invited to join them, watch their work unfold and perhaps engage with the creative process! Maleny artist Corrie Wright will lead the ‘green team’ of herself, Judy Barrass and Elizabeth Poole; and singer and songwriter, Jenny Fitzgibbon will weave her special magic.

With the introduction of the inaugural Spicers Sculpture Award of $5000, eighteen artists have entered work this year.

Over forty works in a diversity of materials will be installed at Spicers Tamarind Retreat from September 10 until October 29. The winner will be announced September 24.

A wide catchment of entries from the Sunshine Coast to as far away as Toowoomba, Bribie Island and Gladstone.

The pieces will be installed throughout the grounds of the Spicers Tamarind Retreat, Maleny; a spectacular setting of rollings hills and rainforest areas that provides the perfect backdrop.

Are Goods of an ’Acceptable Quality’?

As we go into the Christmas season I thought it useful to raise the issue of the quality of gifts that you purchase and what happens when the goods you have just purchased do not meet your expectations. The Competition and Consumer Act (2010) and the Australian Consumer Law, provides uniform legislative protections for all Australians, based on the premise that goods must be of an ‘acceptable quality’.

Prior to the Act’s introduction, rather than considering whether goods were of ‘acceptable quality’ you would consider the good’s ‘merchantable quality’ . This generally meant that goods bought only had to be ‘reasonable’ in description and price rather than ‘acceptable’ in description and price. In other words, the new requirement of ‘acceptable quality’ demands a great level of quality than merely that of ‘merchantable quality’.

The Supplier guarantees that the goods must be: • fit for the purposes for which goods of that kind are commonly supplied • acceptable in appearance and finish • free from defects and safe and durable.

Therefore, goods that are of ‘merchantable quality’ might not be ’acceptable’ to a consumer if, for instance , there is a minor blemish in the appearance.

A supplier may have breached this guarantee of ‘acceptable quality’ if: • the product would not be acquired by a reasonable consumer fully acquainted with the nature and extent of the failure; or • the product did not match a description or a demonstration model; or • the product did not meet the standard that is expected of goods of that nature, or • the supplier did not disclose that the goods are unfit, or • the goods are unsafe.

Depending on the type of guarantee and nature of the breach, there are numerous remedies that a consumer may seek, although most consumers will seek a refund or the replacement of the goods. Suppliers are required to remedy any defects in a reasonable time, and if they fail to do so, legal action can be initiated.

PRING HAS SPRUNG and it’s a great time to think about how you can increase the habitat on your land for local flora and fauna. From the smallest of backyards in town to working farms there’s something we can all do to improve our own quality of life and ensure the survival of the animals and plants that have called this land home for millennia.

Planting local native plants is a great start and with over 2000 different native species to choose from on the Sunshine Coast, how could you go wrong! What’s more there are so many ways we can utilise native plants to provide direct benefits to ourselves. Create a native garden, revegetate creek banks, plant bushfood orchards, establish wind breaks, plant trees for livestock shelters and fodder, put in a firewood lot, plant timber trees, stabilise a landslip and what’s more create a healthy, happy, healing environment in which you and nature can enjoy life!

Planting local native plants in the landscape provides the habitat that is so important to the survival of the wider web of life. Local native plants not only look good but they provide food, nesting material and the ability for many animals to move through the landscape. But wait there’s more...

When re-establishing native forests from scratch it can take decades or even centuries for trees to form hollows for nesting

and logs to fall to the ground that are so crucial in providing homes and food for fauna, even small branches and twigs are invaluable and crucial habitat from which small reptiles, mammals and frogs can survey their surroundings for food and to watch out for predators, or prey! The process of habitat establishment can be accelerated by placement of logs and rock piles (even old concrete slabs) in areas to be revegetated. If no logs or branches are available consider planting some sacrificial Wattle trees that can be cut down between 5-10 years to create extra ground habitat.

Nest boxes are also crucial in creating habitat for local fauna.

Many birds and the majority of our arboreal mammals and reptiles require hollows in trees to nest, rest and survive. The Proteaceae...

HIS FAMILY IS BEST known for its grevilleas and banksias. Proteas are South African. Barung does not stock the popular garden hybrid grevilleas as these are not local and are widely available in commercial nurseries. Many popular hybrids have a heavy nectar flow and are very attractive to noisy miners. However, there are also varieties with smaller flowers and prickly foliage that provide great habitat for small birds.

Barung does stock Grevillea robusta, the magnificent Silky Oak. This large tree is one for an acreage garden or to include in the revegetation. Another beautiful tree grevillea is Grevillea hilliana that grows to about 10m in cultivation and has silvery backs to its leaves. It is a better choice than Grevillea baileyana, a native of North Queensland.

Banksias flower at various times of the year and are a good source of nectar for many honeyeaters. Banksia integrifolia produces many small to medium pale yellow flower spikes from late summer and into winter and is not too large for an average

garden. Banksia aemula, Wallum Banksia, is a coastal species but adaptable to the soils up on the Range. It is a small to medium tree with interesting knobbly bark. Banksia oblongifolia is a sprawling shrub of variable size whose flower spikes are similar to those of Banksia integrifolia.

Larger shrubs are Banksi robur and Banksia spinulosa var. collina. Banksia robur is distinctive for its large leaves with serrated margins and a prominent yellow midrib vein. Large greenish grey flower spikes are borne sporadically throughout the year. Banksia spinulosa, Hairpin Banksia, is most noticeable for its long yellow-orange flower spikes. Grow the shrubby banksias in full sun, use only low phosphorus fertiliser and if needed prune following flowering.

Other families are well represented on the Range and will be covered at a later date.

Establishing and Caring for your Buffalo Lawn with Loors Landscaping ... FRANZ LOORS ... landscaping the Range for the past 24 years A beautiful lawn depends greatly on good preparation.

After removing any weeds, rock and rubble spread a free draining soil to a depth of approximately 10-15cm or loosen ground using a rotary hoe and mix in appropriate soil conditioners. Healthy organic soil also contains billions of beneficial microorganisms such as bacteria, protozoa, fungi and nematodes as well as earthworms – all helping to build the soils structure. Organic fertilizers include manures, alfalfa, corn, bone meal, limestone and sulphate of potash.

These fertilizers encourage beneficial organisms in the soil that in turn excrete digested material becoming a new food available for the grass. Many soils have inadequate pH levels, so be sure to test. A pH of 6.0 to 7.0 is the best for producing beautiful, healthy lawns.

Keep in mind, the best time to improve the soil for your new lawn is prior to planting!

Make sure your turf is fresh, cut late the afternoon prior to delivery or very early morning on the day of delivery. In hot months, moisten the soil before laying. Do not lay turf on hot dry soil.

It is important to water the lawn thoroughly within half an hour after it is laid, wetting the soil ideally 7 to 10 cm below the surface. After installing and watering the turf roll with a compactor roller to ensure good root contact with the soil. The first few weeks are the most critical, infrequent and deep watering is preferred to frequent and shallow watering because the roots will only grow as deeply as its most frequently available water supply. Deeply rooted buffalo grass has a larger “soil-water bank” to draw moisture from and this will help the grass survive drought and hot weather that rapidly dries out the upper soil layer Getting into a good mowing routine is essential for the long term success of your lawn.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that by mowing really low you won’t have to mow as frequently. In most cases you will damage the lawn through scalping, put stress on the lawn, invite weeds and create more (not less) work for yourself!

Mow every 7-10 days in the hot months and every 3-6 weeks in the winter at a height of 2-5cm in sunny to lightly shaded areas and 5-7cm in heavier shaded situations.

Ewen Maddock Dam W

ALKS ON THE WILDSIDE leader Raine See, said 18 hikers visited Ewen Maddock Dam near Landsborough, “As well as children we have quite a few interested adults.....It is a really beautiful spot with the walk beginning with a wooden boardwalk out over the dam, through a stile, then a choice of firetrail or track closer to the dam that we took, across a built up walkway with water on both sides off into the melaleuca swamplands.”

“As it is not a National Park, animals are allowed on the walk so we took our dogs and met some horses which added interest to the children (if not the horse riders, who were very kind and let the children pat them).”

Part of the SEQ water grid that provides drinking water to nearly three million Queenslanders, the 660 metre long dam is built across Addlington Creek, and when full can hold 16,587 megalitres.

Both the dam and Maddock Park were named after Ewen Maddock - an early European settler and local pioneer of Mooloolah and the Maddock family. The Coach House at the entry to Maddock Park is a replica of the family cottage, Koongamoon, built by the Maddock family on the banks of the creek.

Today, Ewen Maddock Dam is a popular recreation destination for locals and visitors. Activities you can enjoy include fishing, bird watching, boating (non-powered), sailing, canoeing and kayaking, swimming (in designated areas), horse riding, mountain bike riding, walking and it’s a great place for picnics.

A bird watching hide and wetland viewing platform provide excellent opportunities for viewing species such as Magpie Goose, Royal Spoonbill, Sacred Kingfisher and Plumed Whistling Duck.

Fishing is a favourite pastime with the dam stocked with Australian Bass, Yellowbelly, Mary River Cod, Saratoga, Tandans, Spangled Perch and Eels.

Plus there were caterpillars! Raine said, "We were lucky enough to have Helen Schwencke and her partner join us from Brisbane. Helen is the author of Create More Butterflies a book we sell regularly at Barung. She talked casually about the caterpillars and we spent some time looking at holes in leaves, from which she could identify which caterpillar ate the leaves and would turn into which butterfly."

"We had an enjoyable picnic with most of the walkers afterwards. The weather was perfect!"

There is also a group camping site on the eastern side of the lake. Ewen Maddock Dam is open from 6am to 6pm daily. The Joining is another event is scheduled for the Dam, held September 18 to 21.

It’s time to get outside and enjoy the beautiful hinterland as the days warm and lengthen. September is Biodiversity Month and as Eudlo's Inga Simpson expresses in her new book Nest, nature’s paradise is just waiting for us to slow down and notice.

A

T MAROOCHY Botanic Garden, a haven for watching, wandering and wondering, Inga Simpson talks about nature’s power to heal, teach, inspire and sustain.

“I love reading nature writing for the stillness that it gives me: the calm, the beautiful sentences and the connection with nature,” she says. “Nature writing can be like quite contemplation or mediation.”

The Sunshine Coast provided the wild, natural backdrop for her story. “I wanted to write something set in South East Queensland because it is a place I love.”

The Sunshine Coast is a hotspot for biodiversity. From the coastal heathlands, through the wetlands, to the pockets of rainforest, in backyards in the hinterland and in the valleys beyond native plants are enriching the environment.

In fact Australia is the most biodiversity rich developed country in the world with more than 600,000 species. It is important to know that 45% of Australia’s birds are only found here in Australia and 84% of plants. There are more than 1180 types of native plants and 310 species of native animals are at risk of disappearing forever.

Inga likes almost everything in the natural world. “I think taking the time to contemplate the bigger picture, larger patterns, the slower turning of time and our relationship with nature as another creature on this planet it is worthwhile,” she says.

Biodiversity is sometimes called the web of life because it is the variety of living things and the environments in which they live. Inga believes “we are not somehow separate from nature, immune to it or in control of it”. Our lives depend upon it for food, water, air, medicine and enjoyment. “We have a responsibility to look after it, it sustains us,” she says.

Nest is in no way an activist book telling people what they should do. Inga wants to create beautiful sentences and entertain the reader. However it is clear from her writing that she has first hand experience working with Landcare on conservation projects.

“There are things that I can actually do out in the world to for the environment.” Inga hopes people can come to love and in turn care for nature in their own way. “I hope to give the reader something rather than asking them for something.”

Nest has a chapter with the central character Jen throwing camping stuff into the back of the Hilux ute and going camping for a few days. She goes on long walks and immerses herself in nature in an attempt to heal and find peace. The story takes you swimming in the slow flowing creek with mist hanging over the surface.

It is full of beautiful moments like the breeze tickling her skin as she dresses. The story makes time to watch a kingfisher darting tree to tree along the creek bank. A pale dawn sky changes colour and the effect of fresh air, swimming and sleeping outside refreshes the soul.

Jen enjoys freshly brewed tea flavoured with a gum leaf.

Reassuring birdsongs echo around her. Inga’s inspiration for that chapter is the Sunshine Coast’s Conondale National Park and it is hard not to grab the book and a picnic rug and head straight out there.

It is no surprise that in Nest Jen, once an artist and teacher, now spends her time watching the birds. Inga says “Where I live now is in heavy bush land with a lot of cover for small birds,” she says.

“The house is not unlike Jen’s house nestled right in the trees so I have really had a chance to observe close up a lot of small birds and get to know their little ways and personalities and habits.”

“I guess it’s been an opportunity to become passionate about them,” she says. The more you learn about something the more interesting it gets. Hopefully it encourages people to get out and have a similar experience in nature themselves.”

Like a flower blooming in the crack of a concrete path, nature gives us hope and inspires resilience.

Formally trained in classical and opera, and later turning to blue note, Lizzie has a unique style and hauntingly beautiful voice. In 2013 she was even short-listed to sing for Cirque Du Soleil, thanks to her spellbinding performances filled with profound lyrics and insightful stories. After travelling and performing in the UK and Indonesia, Lizzie is now based in Maleny and performing regularly on the Sunshine Coast.

She has just released her new solo EP, Leaden Heart, which she wrote and co-produced. A blend of jazz and classical genres, Lizzie has brought together some of the Sunshine Coast’s most talented musicians to deliver stunning arrangements. Lizzie will be at The Upfront Club on August 29th.

The multi talents and styles of the Rod Christensen Project will once again be enjoyed by many when the group takes to the stage at the Maleny UpFront Club.

The trio are a real crowd pleaser performing a diverse and captivating repertoire with influences from swing jazz, latin, modern groove and blues, and including many spicy originals written by band members.

The Queensland Pops Brass and Percussion Ensembles have prepared a fabulous repertoire called â&#x20AC;&#x153;Trumpets and Trianglesâ&#x20AC;? to entertain Hinterland audiences.

Of international and national reknown, the Brass Ensemble, called Best of Brass (BoB) comprises five players on trumpet, trombone, bass trombone, piccolo and horn.

BoB is dedicated to presenting challenging works for brass quintet that will delight audiences with the required virtuosity, musicality, and last, but not least, entertainment value. Together with three percussionists on drums, triangle and tympani, this lively double ensemble performance will leave you with magical memories.

The Maleny Arts Council is very fortunate to have long-time resident Wendy Harper, on their Committee. Wendyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s late husband, Colin Harper AM MBE, established the Queensland Pops and his legacy lives on under director/conductor Patrick Pickett.

Patrick was thrilled to be invited to Maleny for this special concert on Sunday 14 September at 2.30pm . He has visited

Gabor Josika is a guitarist and vocalist who has been entertaining crowds throughout Queensland for the past fifteen years. He has lent his guitar playing skills to many bands and performers throughout the years as well as performing the lead guitar duties in the critically acclaimed 'Dalpura' production of 'Jesus Christ Superstar'.

Gabor has supported major touring acts such as the Tea Party, Midnight Oil and Diesel and performed in front of 89,000+ spectators at the 2004-2005 Mooloolaba New Year's Extravaganza.

Real Food Festival fast approaching Now in its fourth year, the Real Food Festival will return to the Maleny Showgrounds on the 13th and 14th September, showcasing the best that Sunshine Coast food producers have to offer.

This year, in addition to about 100 exhibitors, the festival will include cooking demonstrations, discussions and presentations by producers, chefs and food experts across five different venues including the Real Food Kitchen, Food for Thought, Nourishing Ideas, Food Craft and the Kitchen Garden. Maleny Community Information Session High speed National Broadband Network (NBN) for the Sunshine Coast Hinterland NBN Fixed Wireless on the Sunshine Coast NBN Co is planning to deliver a high-speed Fixed Wireless broadband service to the rural residential areas and small villages surrounding the Maleny township.

Over the last two years we have been busy developing and proposing fixed wireless facilities in the Sunshine Coast Regional local government area to deliver access to high-speed broadband services for homes and businesses in villages and rural communities along the Sunshine Coast. This is the next stage of our roll out plan in the Sunshine Coast area.

So far, 14 sites have been approved by Sunshine Coast Regional and Noosa Shire Councils, servicing communities at Belli Park, Boreen Point, Browns Creek, Cooloolabin, Cooroy, Gheerulla, Hunchy, Kenilworth, Kidaman Creek, Kin Kin, Mapleton, Pomona, and Tinbeerwah. NBN Co has also proposed to co-locate fixed wireless facilities on existing telecommunications structures at Black Mountain, Bli Bli, Nambour and North Arm. Other areas in the Sunshine Coast will receive either fixed line or satellite services depending on where they are located. Maleny township is scheduled to receive a fixed line service.

Consultation and town planning requirements We work in consultation with local councils to determine an efficient and effective way to rollout the Fixed Wireless network. A key consideration in these decisions is the design of the network, which takes a number of factors into account including population density, geography, radio frequency, and other network specific considerations.

Where ever possible we look to actively use existing infrastructure when planning the Fixed Wireless network before proposing new structures. Over the coming months we will be conducting community consultation in the Sunshine Coast local government area regarding the broader Fixed Wireless network rollout and about individual fixed wireless facilities.

IN BRIEF: Wireless plans for hinterland NBN Co has been rolling out fixed wireless services across the Sunshine Coast over the last two years.

They do not yet have specific plans for fixed wireless facilities around Maleny – and are at the very beginning of a comprehensive consultation process.

Toastmaster Duo win Pitch Ann and Jeff Ross have just won the Concept category at the Innovation Centre Sunshine Coast’s annual business Pitch competition, thanks to Maleny Toastmasters.

Ann said, “The competition was immense and without the background of Toastmasters and their members who helped with constructive feedback on our earlier presentation, it is unlikely we would have got this far with our presentation.”

“Toastmasters has been an enormous help to me and enabled me to confidently convey verbally in my pitch to the judges.”

OMSCIOUSNESS IS PRIMARY. Although we experience life in a physical universe, the underlying Wendy Rosenfeldt blueprint of everything is consciousness.

Consciousness sustains life; when the consciousness of an individual leaves the body, it immediately starts to break down. While we may not understand all creatures and inanimate objects to have consciousness in the same sense as humans do, there is intelligence that provides growth and structure in animals, plants and objects.

In the human physiology, the material aspect of the body is constantly being renewed. In a year about 95% of our cells have been exchanged. But we still look the same, we still feel that we are the same because we have the same consciousness.

Looking at it from this point of view it is a wonder that we do we age or get diseases. However the human body is also subject to the influence of the outside environment and while the physiology is trying to maintain homeostasis, our diet, lifestyle and levels of stress do impact on the body’s ability to maintain balance.

At the level of pure consciousness, or the Unified Field, there is complete unity. At this level the intelligence of how all the different aspects of the physiology should function and how they interact with all the other parts is integrated, but as the intelligence unfolds into matter, there can be a break down in the unity of the whole. The disorder comes about through the process of manifestation.

DON’T USUALLY recommended TV shows but earlier this month Catalyst Series 15 aired two Episodes, no’s 5 and 6. which demonstrated brilliant evidence regarding the benefits of establishing good gut health and how that then positively influences so many of our bodies functions. The two episodes were easy to understand and well documented with blood tests and follow up comparisons to show the benefits to ones health when changes were made through diet. These benefits were amazing so I urge you to get out your computer, google I View, select Catalyst and then search out series 15 Episodes 5 and 6.

Over the years our diets have changed so much that now a natural diet can seem like a health kick, and dietary addictions sometimes result in passionate defenses of food like substances that actually do

While they may have originated from a traumatic experience, it is the bitter thoughts, emotional over eating and tendency to drink too much, that may result from this that allows the disease to progress.

If the cause of the problem can be located in consciousness and treated on that level it is far easier than waiting until it has manifested into a full blown disorder.
