HE ROTARY CLUB OF MALENY recently linked in with the Rotary Club of Surfers Sunrise on the Gold Coast, in support of their nationally recognised project ‘Push Bikes to Wheelchairs’. Discarded push bikes are gathered, dismantled and recycled. Two bicycle frames and a set of handlebars create the foundation for a wheelchair.

Since 1987 over 6,600 wheelchairs have been shipped to some 30 third world countries. I spoke with Maleny Rotarian, Chris Brooker. “We will set up a workshop on Sunday, March 26, 9am – 2.30pm at the Maleny Showgrounds so that people can bring their unwanted bikes to us. We’ll be dismantling some of the bikes already collected by Rotary. “Excess parts will be taken to the Witta Resource Recovery Centre. The depot’s manager is also going to set aside some of the push bikes that come in

between now and the workshop. It’s a good example of genuine recycling.” Time to pull those surplus bikes out of your shed, no matter their condition and give them to the ‘Push Bike to Wheelchairs’ project. If you genuinely are not able to deliver the bikes to the workshop at the Maleny Showgrounds, collection can be organised. Desrae deserves a big

thank you

Hooray for volunteers! They help make our towns and villages welcoming, they support members of the community and they are just generally good people. Montville-based volunteer, Desrae Woolley, deserves a special mention today, for clocking up 20 years at the Visitor Information Centre.

ISITORS ARRIVING IN MONTVILLE are charmed by the picturesque main street, with its inviting architecture and welcoming shops. But there is more to Montville than the main street, and the best place to find out what’s on offer is at the Visitor’s Information Centre. Built near beautiful Russell Family Park, it looks a little like an ice-cream kiosk, but the contents are much more helpful, and the staff even more so! Run by volunteers, the Visitor’s Information Centre (VIC) has been helping people find the hidden gems of the area for two decades. And no-one knows more about the Centre itself than Desrae Woolley, a founder member of the team. Desrae and Graham Woolley have lived in Montville for 21 years. “We moved up here for Graham’s work, he was a builder; then after we moved up here his work all went to Brisbane!” Desrae laughs. The couple bought some land on Mill Hill Road and built the house themselves, but once it was finished Desrae knew

she “had to do something apart from potter in the yard”. Back in Brisbane she had worked for Twentieth Century Fox Films before becoming volunteer for Lifeline. “They offered me a job as supervisor after a while, which I enjoyed.” “Well, except that time the shop was robbed by someone who grabbed a kitchen knife from one of the shelves!” Graham reminds her from his chair. “That’s true. Anyway, there was an ad where Jenny Tatton wanted to start an information centre, and Graham said, ‘You could do that’. I went to the meeting and started the next week.” The VIC began thanks to the Blackall Range Business and Tourism Committee, in a small space next door to where the Montville Gourmet Pizzeria now resides. “It was good fun. We knew nothing about Montville really, so on the weekends we would go around and check out the area. We’d learn. If we didn’t know something we’d go into the real estate shop and ask.”

Soon came the ‘famils’, which were a huge benefit to the team and community. “Once a month on a Thursday we would do a famil,” Desrae explains. “We’d visit two or three accommodation places in Montville, Maleny, Flaxton or Mapleton, and sometimes it would be restaurants and cafes, or shops. “This way we knew what to tell people about places they could stay, or where was good to eat. I used to run the famils, and we’d have a morning tea at these places, get to know the locals. “Secrets on the Lake was a major sponsor of the VIC, they were lovely to us. Funnily enough, we’ve actually just won two nights’ accommodation there!” The team made their own uniforms and Desrae has kept her cream-coloured shirt after all these years, with its elegant embroidered motif ‘Calm Behind the Coast’. “They looked so smart in their uniforms, with brown skirts and a cream scarf,” says Graham. “We moved next door to the IGA in the late 90s,” Desrae continues. “It was the perfect spot for us, right in the centre of the village. We had a photocopy machine there to raise a little money for the centre, but everyone still worked for free.” The Sunshine Coast Council eventually built a new space and later Visit Sunshine Coast took over. “The famils aren’t as regular these days, and meetings tend to be held at the Glasshouse Information Centre. Montville is now part of a team, not an individual centre. “I think the famils are definitely useful. There is so much accommodation up here that people don’t know about. We need to see more,” Desrae believes. “The rangers still come up sometimes though to tell us what’s happening with the walks, which is really useful.”

Visit Sunshine Coast recently celebrated Desrae’s long service to the community with wine, flowers, and gifts “Every five years you get rewarded,” she says, “which is a nice recognition.” Desrae still keeps in touch with many of the original volunteers who have moved on. “There are about nine of us who go for coffee once a fortnight.” “Yes, and they get looked after,” adds Graham. “The Waffle House, Montville Gourmet Pizzeria and Monty’s all give them a discount on their coffees.” The VIC itself has proved a valuable space for Desrae. Graham nearly lost his life recently and needed five operations and physiotherapy for months on end. Desrae was by his side for much of the time. “She needed the volunteering sometimes during that. It gave her a break from home,” he says with understanding. Over the years nothing as dramatic as the Lifeline incident has happened, thankfully. “People are generally very friendly, and often ask for things that aren’t here, or were here years ago, like the pottery and the glassblower.” However there are two questions that people always ask… “Everyone wants a different way down,” smiles Desrae.” The Palmwoods-Montville Road always has them asking, ‘Is there another way off the range’?” And the other popular question? “Where are the toilets?”

Living the dream. Many aspire to it, and now, with their daughters all grown up, Keith and Colleen Canning from Woombye are doing it – along with a motorbike or two…

IKE LOVERS, Keith and Colleen Canning, are seasoned travellers, but they were born and bred in Nambour. “I left school and went to have a holiday at Alex Beach with my brother, Russell, and met his mate, Keith. I was just 16,” shares Colleen. “We’ve been married 39 years this June,” adds Keith with a grin, clearly happy with his choice of bride. Growing up on acreage, Keith had motorbikes. “I rode old

bikes around the paddocks, and at 17 started riding properly. Then we were married and it was no more bikes for a while! Cars, houses and kids were the priority.” Bikes, however, were not going to give up easily. “Two friends bought an old bike and pulled it apart to work on it, but then they decided to go and start a business in Thailand. They said to my brother, ‘Tell Keith he can have the bike’. “I bought another heap, and with parts from that I restored the bike, and things just grew from there.” Keith developed a fondness for a particular brand of motorbike – the British Velocette - made between 1905 and 1970. “When I’d just left school a friend had one, and I was in awe of it.” Once their daughters were older, Keith and Colleen joined the Velocette Club. “They advertised a big rally in

Western Australia. Keith was still doing up a bike and, rather than say ‘what about we do it?’ we said ‘let’s do it!’ which is how we approach everything now,” smiles Colleen. Every year the couple attend the Velocette rally, wherever it is held, and Keith has been National President of the club since 2005. “They are beautiful,” says Colleen. “They are usually black, but I can now pick people’s bikes just by looking at them. There’s always something personal on them.” Rallies have taken them across the world, in particular to America and New Zealand – places where they now have a motorbike stored for their visits. “We met an American at a rally in 2003 and he invited us to the US. We went to California in 2005 and loved it,” Colleen says. “We’ve ridden across the US twice,” Keith adds. “Last year we rode through 16 states, and in 2012 we did our ‘Western Tour’, following the names of old cowboy movies we’d watched as kids. People can’t believe you’ve come all that way just because of a movie!” They had a nasty accident a few years back, when a driver fell asleep at the wheel and rammed the back of their BMW bike, sending the pair flying. “Now I know how Superman feels,” Keith quips. Colleen came off relatively lightly, but Keith had more damage, including broken legs, which stopped the biking for about 12 months. On this year’s USA trip they plan to visit New York. “We’ll be on the bike for some of the journey, but not in New York itself – it’s not much fun riding in big cities.” There are also plans on the horizon for a visit to Europe, as they have family over there. “My dad, Joe, is from Northern Ireland,” says Keith, “He came over at 16 with the Salvation Army, for the chance at a better life. He met my mum, Gladys, and settled here. “Colleen and I built this house, but the house next door has had four generations of my family living there, starting

with Gladys’s parents.” The daughters themselves are ‘tolerant’ of their parents’ passion for bikes. “They both had motorbike escorts for their weddings,” Collen smiles, “but they do worry about us.” It is clear that Keith and Colleen love to travel. “We have loose plans, we just see where the road takes us. And there’s always a motel. If a town’s full, we drive to the next one.” The couple show me albums of their bikes and their road trips. Open roads, beach drives, small villages, welcoming people and lots of smiles – page after page of adventure. “I’ve worn out two cameras already!” Colleen laughs. “I take thousands of photos on a trip, and then create a selection of favourites at the end to make a book.” I’m taken to meet a few members of the Velocette family, including very old ‘Bertie’, classic ‘Ruby’, and ‘Gordon’, who Keith kick starts and I hear purr like a contented giant cat. The next event on the calendar is closer to home. The Historical Club of Queensland are holding their annual Motorcycle Swap Meet at the Maleny Showgrounds on March 11 and 12. “This will be the 24th consecutive year of the event,” Keith, who is club secretary, tells me. With over 1000 members and a huge display of historic, vintage and veteran motorcycles on display, it is a place for social ride and shows. “A club motorcycle must be 30 years old, or more, and we have members with bikes ranging back to 1912,” Keith shares. The club also raises and donates money to charities, a role they take very seriously. “And the Maleny Lions Club is our main food provider; they use the event as a major fundraiser for their own community programs.” Anyone can come along to the swap, the cost is only $5. You can find complete motorcycles, engines, gearboxes, frames, tyres, books, the list goes on. Gates open for sellers/vendors at 6am and at 8am for buyers and the general public. a great night out There’s nothing like live music to liven the senses and bring people together. The folk of Maleny (and the range) know this, and the latest musical incarnation to enjoy is Club Acoustic. Writer Dale Jacobsen went to the February Club, which was full of pleasant surprises.

AY BACK, when I first made friends in Maleny, a group of us used to gather on each other’s verandahs and talk about our dreams. Verandah dreaming, we called it. A common theme that threads through the stories I write for Hinterland Times is the realisation of a dream. Many of these dreams began on verandahs. Range music teacher and musician, Jacinta Foale, and sound technician, Mark ‘Sparky’ Paltridge, shared a dream: to create a venue where the sound quality and atmosphere supports the culture of a ‘listening’ audience. A place where the music and the players are the most important aspect. Food and alcohol are only present to support a lovely night out listening to music. Their dream remained on hold for a few years as the Upfront Club fulfilled most of the needs of the muso culture of Maleny. Jacinta said, “The impetus to move on our ideas came when we heard that the Club was closing”. Serendipitously, Chris Brooker from the Maleny RSL was looking for someone to host just such an evening. “There was a good feeling of being well connected and in agreement before we started,” said Jacinta. It is very clear that much thought has gone into the presentation of Club Acoustic evenings, held on the first Thursday of the month. Tables are set out in an arc directing all attention to the stage with its backdrop of flags and the Honour Board. The bar and food areas are apart, allowing a separate space for those who want to take part in conversation. The lighting and sound are very professional. I went along to the February Club and, as is the custom, the evening began with blackboard acts—full of surprises, but of high quality. To my delight, the two final acts (invited guests) were Danny Rose and Murray Wall. Now, I have to confess I am something of a Danny Rose groupie, but to see this seasoned performer singing a set of vintage American Songbook standards was a real treat. Danny was the force behind the Upfront Club, and it has taken him a year to perform at Club Acoustic. “At first I was too sad and sorry,” explained Danny. Jacinta obviously holds Danny in high regard. “We had our first session in the same month that the Upfront Club closed, March 2016, and we commented that Sparky and I

Danny is royalty to Club Acoustic.” Regalia, The Full, Jacinta’s alter ego, hosts the evenings with such style. “Regalia is very committed to looking FABulous, and her gear is sourced solely from Maleny’s Op Shops,” explained Jacinta. “My choice to go with this format came from being a musician who has benefited from good hosting.” Jacinta has just completed a Masters in Gestalt Therapy where she focused on the importance of supporting vulnerability and rebuilding a sense of valuing. She is using this knowledge well at Club Acoustic. “A good host can enhance the experience by drawing attention to things about the performer that the audience might take for granted and by honouring the audience’s role in making it a good night.”

The other half of the dynamic duo, Sparky, came to Maleny in 1995. As a musician (he plays in five bands, and runs his own recording studio), Sparky knows what performers are after. Jacinta recorded some of the songs on her album in his studio, so she appreciates, first-hand, his attention to detail. While the acoustics at the RSL hall are superb, the clarity and quality of the sound is down to Sparky and his able offsider, David Bagshaw. Theme nights are held during the year, such as a fundraiser for the Welcome to Maleny Group of the Neighbourhood Centre. Jacinta explained: “They brought a bus load of Iraqi and Syrian refugees for a day out, and we raised almost $700 towards their bus hire and other expenses. We also held a fantastic IDAHO event. A very moving night”. It’s hard to hold musos down. I have lived in Maleny for

more than 20 years, and during that time, there has always been at least one live venue, run on the blackboard model, for people to perform. Some don’t last very long; some go on for years. But one thing is sure: when a venue closes, it isn’t long before another rises to take its place. Maleny is privileged to have a venue such as the RSL hall and its Club Acoustic. Over 100 people came through the doors while I was there, and very few left before the end. Mounting excitement and planning is unfolding at Maleny Playgroup as they organise to celebrate their 40th anniversary. Forty years of continuous service to the Maleny community. Maleny Playgroup at their 2016 Christmas Party

HE ESTABLISHMENT of this playgroup transpired when young mother Jan Hutchinson, new to the area, enquired about joining the closest group, which was in Caloundra. She was told that they were full and was given the names of two other women who might have been interested in forming a Maleny group. They were keen. In March, 1977 Maleny Playgroup was formed and began in a local church. Nine mothers and 16 children attended. While the facilities were adequate, children’s activities were limited to indoors.

One year later due to increased attendance the group moved to the announcers building at the showgrounds. Negotiations were soon underway between the playgroup and Education Department for permanent facilities. The outcome was that Maleny Playgroup obtained the right to use the building now known as C&K Maleny Community Kindergarten. When I entered the kindergarten grounds to immerse myself in a playgroup morning, I had an immediate awareness of a safe space, a happy place. There was a sense of freedom for the mothers and their children. At times children are accompanied by a grandparent or their dad. Committee members Sarah Cornfoot and Katrina Vagg shared their experiences of Maleny Playgroup. Sarah, with a child on her lap and another in the playground said, “I’ve been a member for three years. I moved to Maleny and didn’t know anybody.

“My son was getting bored and needed other kids to play with. He loved it and we’ve been coming along almost every week since. “I didn’t really meet anyone in town until I came to playgroup. The mums here are now among my closest friends.” C&K Kindergarten operates four days a week leaving Wednesday free for playgroup. This is due to a longstanding agreement creating a symbiotic relationship. Playgroup pays rent, shares the equipment and has the use of the grounds and building. There is a weekly fee of $3 per family to cover rent and other expenses. “Liz our Secretary, started coming when she was pregnant because she had just moved to the area and knew she would want ‘mum’ friends. Since then we’ve been really keen to tell new or pregnant mums to come. Some have said that it was one thing that they really

looked forward to every week. “Also, when they’re first getting out after the birth of the baby it’s nice to be around other mums. There’s no mum’s group in Maleny so playgroup connects them to the community. “If we see people in the street or at the IGA we say hi, ask if they are local and invite them to come along. Katrina met a lady at the gym the other day and told her about our group,” said Sarah. I continued my time at playgroup amid kids ‘hunting’ food and excitable play. Sarah left our discussion to attend to her child and so Katrina shared activities and anecdotes. “Every Wednesday at about 10 o’clock, the council’s bin truck goes past. It starts off with one child screaming, ‘bin truck’. Then we get a flock of children running down to the gate. They all stand and watch the bin truck go past. It’s a highlight of playgroup. “We’ve had Teddy Bear Picnics where the kids bring a toy. Blankets are laid out, there’s storytime and food to share. “The local balloon man has come along twisting his balloons into animal shapes. We’ve had face painters, people sharing music like a woman from Maleny Ukulele. “We also create themes around annual occasions like Easter and Christmas. Local people just volunteer their time. It’s wonderful.” Special days for dads and grandparents are always a hit at Maleny Playgroup. Grandparent’s Day saw the installation of a photo booth topped with a sign made by the children. A place where memories were made. Sarah and Katrina agree that Maleny Playgroup offers a safe environment that supports the development and well-being of young children. It is an integral part of the community with a ripple effect into the heart of each family.

“Many of the children who attend our playgroup go on to kindergarten maintaining friendships in the same location. “There are babies who have been coming here before they were born and they keep coming until they go to kindy and then often onto school,” said Sarah. Maleny Playgroup is a welcoming place that caters to 0 – 5 years, each Wednesday, 9am – 11.30am (closed school holidays). The group has a membership of about 40 families with an average of 20 attending each week. New families are always welcome and the first visit is free. On Wednesday, March 29 at 15 Cedar Street, Maleny Playgroup will celebrate their 40th anniversary with a picnic and entertainment. DYING WITHOUT A WILL WHAT HAPPENS? In the last two issues of Hinterland Times I have been discussing the requirements of a valid Will. I thought it would be a good opportunity to continue the train of thought with what could happen should you die without a valid will. If a person dies without a valid Will, that person is said to have died “intestate”. Dying without a valid will or ‘intestate’ can be very detrimental to your loved ones and also very expensive. Not only have you given away your ability to decide how your estate is to be distributed and to whom but you also run the risk of the costs of administering your estate increasing drastically and your estate being distributed to unintended beneficiaries. One example of an unintended beneficiary is an estranged spouse from whom the deceased was not formally divorced. That estranged spouse will share in the deceased’s estate under the Queensland intestacy rules despite the deceased and the estranged spouse not being in a relationship at the time of death. The Succession Act sets out the rules to be applied in situations of intestacy. Here are some examples: •

IF YOU ARE MARRIED/DE FACTO WITH NO CHILDREN, your spouse takes 100%;

IF YOU ARE MARRIED/DE FACTO WITH ONE CHILD your spouse takes the first $150,000.00 plus the household contents. Assets after this are divided equally between the spouse and the child

IF YOU ARE MARRIED/DE FACTO WITH TWO OR MORE CHILDREN your spouse takes the first $150,000.00 plus the household contents. Assets after this are divided 1/3 for the spouse and 2/3 equally between the children.

In situations where you do not have any close relatives the rules provide that your estate must go to relatives that are further removed from you. Another problem with dying intestate is the need for court approval for the appointment of someone to administer your estate. In a will you would appoint an executor of your choice. However with an intestacy, your loved ones would have to apply to the Supreme Court for an administrator to be appointed. In the absence of a suitable person the Supreme Court may appoint the Public Trustee.

Kindness IN KUSMA Kenilworth’s Dee Dunham recently visited Nepal on a humanitarian mission. Her experiences are fascinating and humbling, and her Nepali companions have a generosity of spirit that could warm the coldest heart.

FTER A 15 HOUR FLIGHT from Brisbane, three days in exotic, noisy, colourful Kathmandu, and a nine-hour bus ride over unbelievably rough, steep and winding roads, Dee was at last in Kusma, a place she considers her “other home”. “This visit would be very different from my previous one, visiting my Nepali family and friends. This time I was here to make a difference.” Dee’s Nepali ‘family’ consists of Ramkrishna, his wife Goma and their five-year-old daughter, Shreeyasi. Ramkrishna is school principal of an exclusive private boarding school with more than 600 students. He also works tirelessly on the committees of Rotary, Lions, Red Cross and Human Rights. He believes his purpose in this life is to help the disadvantaged, the poor and the handicapped. In particular, he believes passionately that education is the pathway to freedom from poverty for the youth of his country, and he is striving to bring education to those who would not normally have any access to it. Goma is a secondary school teacher and has recently qualified as a university lecturer. She totally supports Ramkrishna in his life’s mission. “Nepal is a very poor country with no welfare system, no free health or education,” explains Dee. “Since the earthquake I had been fundraising in a small way with the help and generosity of my friends, in particular the local Ukulele Group. “We had been able to provide emergency help to some remote villages where people were starving and without shelter and some ongoing support through Ramkrishna’s programmes. “But now I was at the coalface where I could actually see first-hand the needs of these very gentle and patient people.” Dee’s first visit was to a school in a very poor and remote community. The two-hour journey took her over huge washouts, potholes deep enough to drown in, and

landslides with just a narrow pathway cleared in the piles of rocks. “But when I looked up it was to a landscape so dramatically beautiful there are no words to adequately describe it. Impossibly high mountains covered with rainforest and backed by the sparkling white of permanently snow- covered Himalaya ranges in the distance. “Below were deep ravines at the base of which raced wide, white gushing rivers. It was breathtaking.” As Dee stepped out of the car she was draped with welcome scarves and garlands of beautiful marigolds, small children crowded around offering sweet posies of flowers and welcomed her with warmth and enthusiasm and blessings of “Namaste”.

The traditional band of drums, pipes and whistles played and marched down the street followed by women in bright coloured, flowing saris, dancing and laughing. “With some of the money I had brought and a considerable contribution from him and Goma, Ramkrishna had bought a school bag, school uniform, books, pads and all the basic student needs, one for each of the 50 school age children in the village. “I felt a huge lump in my throat as I witnessed their gratitude for things our children take for granted. There were speeches, some children performed traditional dances and then they farewelled us with the same enthusiasm with which they had greeted us.” Next was a visit to a school in Kusma where, with the help of EKATA Youth Group, Ramkrishna had placed and is supporting 13 blind students. He had read about the plight of many blind children trapped in the remote outer villages, living in abject poverty, left to live their lives in darkness and isolation. When he investigated he found 13 such children and brought them to Kusma where they were placed in a hostel and enrolled in a local school. Here they are receiving an education and have displayed an extraordinary musical talent. “We were invited to be guests at school assembly where the entire school paraded in very impressive fashion.The blind students were then brought forward where they performed a beautiful song they had composed. “After their performance we presented them with bags containing

clothing and toiletries and each one received a handmade scarf and hat knitted and donated by my friend and neighbour, Lyndall.” Just outside Kusma there is a very famous and very long suspension bridge. connecting one mountain top to another above a deep ravine, at the bottom of which is a magnificent, wide,fast-flowing river. “I stood on this bridge looking down at what looked like matchbox sized buildings on the edge of the river, knowing that in those buildings, on the temple site, lived the Old Mothers whom I desperately wanted to meet.” These are the old widows who have worked hard all their lives, who are now too old and frail to continue working. They have no family to support them and because there is no welfare system in Nepal they need

community support. “Amazingly, Ramkrishna ordered a bulldozer to cut a road down to the temple and we would be able to get down there in a Jeep. “After a short socialising period with Ramkrishna translating, we gave the Old Mothers the gifts we had brought, and they were so happy and grateful like children on Christmas morning. “I will probably never get to see these precious old ladies again, but I will never forget them.” Now Dee is back in her safe and comfortable environment and looking for ways to continue to contribute to the great work Ramkrishna is doing. “I am hopeful that I can return often to my beloved Nepal.”

N MARCH 25 WE will be celebrating Harmony Day all over Australia. This is a day to extol inclusiveness, friendship and belonging, and for the 2017 event the Maleny State School will be uniting with The River School and for the first time, Maleny State High School to complete a number of activities. Three classes will be learning three songs to sing for the community on March 21 in front of Maleny Library and up near the old QML, in between the real estate and Piece of Green. In addition to this, all students at both schools will be making their own prayer flag with a special message or word, based on the theme for this year. All classes have been given brightly coloured material to complete their class sets. The week before Harmony Day we will fly these wonderful flags in the community, outside the library and the old QML. We are also hoping to put the flags up in the town library for the community to read and enjoy the messages from the children from the two schools. After Harmony Day these little emblems of positivity will be displayed permanently inside the school hall for the children and parents to enjoy.

The Montville junior youth group and children’s class held their first service project for the Lions Emergency Homeless shelter, which provides assistance to single women or single men with children. The service project involved a few weeks of planning and implementation. Flyers were made and distributed to 100 homes to inform locals of the service project, which donations are required and when the items would be collected. The generous donations were collected, delivered and much appreciated by the shelter. The Montville junior youth group and children’s classes meet Thursday afternoons, 3.30pm-5pm and are based on the teaching of the Bahá’í Faith. People from all backgrounds are welcome to participate, since the spiritual identity of each individual will be strengthened – www.bahai.org.au

HE MALENY SINGERS are treasured for their wonderful productions of operettas and Gilbert and Sullivan, but until this year they have not ventured into the world of Oratorio. In April, the singers will perform an abridged version, showcasing the highlights of Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijah. The work tells the story of this larger than life Old Testament prophet, and features some of the greatest music that Mendelssohn ever wrote. There will be wonderful performances from our own popular soloists pictured: Evalee Sharples (The Widow), Tony Glazebrook (Elijah), Colin Dunn (Obadiah), Viera Keogh (The Angel) and the performance will be conducted by musical director (seated), Margaret Taylor. The singers will be accompanied by Janet Brewer on piano, and Anne Bowyer on cello. The performances will be on Friday, April 7 at 7pm and Saturday, April 8 at 2.30pm at the Uniting Church of Maleny, Landsborough Road. ALENY HOSPITAL Auxiliary has big plans for 2017, and President Val Bridger said, "We are looking for some young, energetic members. "We wouldn't knock anyone back - it does not require a lot of time - but significant events take a lot of work." Their focus is on fundraising to purchase items that support patients, families and staff. "For example," explained Val, "we buy high tech specialised beds - fantastic to sleep on, but also easy for staff to move patients around and reduce pressure sores." Their brand new BBQ and gazebo area is a good example of benefits for everyone, particularly those patients in rehabilitation. Said Val, "They can walk outside to a shady area with nice tables and chairs - and have a BBQ with their family. It is also a place staff like to enjoy their lunch." Maleny IGA has kindly contributed to the BBQ and outdoor blinds, the rest was from donations and fundraising by the Auxiliary. NDREW POWELL MP, Member for Glass House, has sponsored a petition initiated by Rachel Fentiman (pictured) requesting the Minister for Main Roads to investigate and fund safety upgrades at the intersection of Landsborough-Maleny Road and Maleny-Montville Road. After several unsuccessful representations to the Department of Transport and Main Roads requesting improvements to the intersection, Andrew said it is time for the community to be heard by the Minister. AREN WAS BORN on the outskirts of Melbourne. in 1962, she obtained an Arts Degree at Monash University and then a Bachelor of Education from hawthorn institute of Education. She spent the next ten years teaching in North Western Victoria in the region known as the Mallee. in the mid 1990s, Karen moved to Sydney to become a full time professional artist. She purchased an 1890’s workers’ cottage in North Sydney which had originally been the home of men quarrying sandstone for Sydney’s early buildings. it is now her home and studio. “My studio overlooks the local dog park and i get a lot of my inspiration by watching the interaction between dogs and their owners. i was really chuffed when the North Sydney Council purchased one of my paintings of the Dog park for their prestigious collection which houses works by the likes of Brett Whitely and peter Kingston.” Another recent triumph for Karen was being invited to be Artist in Residence at St. patrick’s primary School at Camperdown in the Western District of Victoria. “i helped the students paint a mural for the school. it was wonderful experience for me. The children were delightful and so inspiring.” Before moving to Sydney, Karen lived on a wheat and sheep farm where her days were divided between riding horses baking cakes, painting chasing shearing sheep. “One day when i was at rounding up sheep near horsham, i came across a red Bentwood chair out in a paddock. it was so unexpected, that it has stayed in my mind ever since. The series of paintings i have painted for my show at Montville are all centred around bentwood chairs.” Open daily from 10 to 5, Montville Art Gallery is located at 138 Main Street, Montville, opposite the Village Green. hE LiFT GALLERy is launching an exhibition of over 60 Chinese jade carvings, dating from Neolithic times up to the early Ching Dynasty of the eighteenth century. The pieces have been chosen from a large private collection and range from small humanoid carvings from the neolithic hongshan period, to beautiful intricate carvings of Ching Dynasty dragons, and a large dramatic Guan yin figure carved in black jade, featured below. The exhibition is accompanied by handouts describing the importance and place of nephrite jade in Chinese culture, its mineral composition and the way in which one can establish its authenticity when compared with other minerals such as serpentine, which are often passed off as jade. Out of the multiplicity of subjects carved we have chosen to show the changing styles of the successive dynasties, featuring cicadas, bi discs, congs, pendants and also small group of Ching brush washers. There has probably never been such a comprehensive exhibition of jade staged outside China and Taiwan, and this is an opportunity for individuals and groups to examine and learn first hand about such a fascinating subject. The exhibition opens on March 4, which coincides with Lift Gallery's birthday, and will close on September 4. This is not the first time The Garden has allowed the Friends of Ebenezer (a locally run registered charity) to use their facility. ACh yEAR ThE Zonta Club of Blackall Range offers women students the chance to apply for a bursary, this year worth $1500. The student must be either living in or have come from the Blackall Range and Sunshine Coast hinterland – be studying for qualifications at a tertiary institution, and show dedication to her chosen field. Coordinator of the program, Zontian Kaye Gardner, said all the recipients so far have been outstanding young women whom the club was proud to support. “Zonta international’s (Zi) mission is to advance the status of women, and when the first club chartered in New york in 1919, its aim was simply the education of girls. “This covers all areas of women’s lives, from the problems of domestic violence to the recognition of community work done by the ‘quiet achievers’.

Blackall Range bursary on offer Last year’s winner was Emily Gregory from palmwoods, now in her third year of a Bachelor of Animal Ecology at the University of Sunshine Coast. Emily said her aim was conservation and sustainability in marine animals. “The bursary enabled me to take part in an overseas work placement with humpback

whale conservation in Coastal Ecuador, and make important connections and network with people in my field. Kaye emphasised the student need not be studying at a university. “The bursary is open to women at any equivalent tertiary institution, for instance TAFE, or another college.

“A student needs to have completed one year of her course study and her results should indicate her achievement, and her determination to continue in her career of choice,” said Mrs Gardner. A taste of Brazil

Maleny players present their new One Act Plays, commencing Friday March 31. Each short play has a different genre, with two of the plays written and directed by local community members. One is set in a Brisbane art gallery, where three cleaning ladies find out their jobs are threatened and come up with a scheme to make a lot of money. Then there's a pub and a chance meeting between two men on Valentine's Day. The audience also see a small town drama, with a young man who cannot or will not speak. Set in 1952, this is the true story of Estonian champion fencer and coach Endel Nelis, whose encouragement of children in his motivational sport led him into danger from Stalinist Russia. Activists from the Estonian War of independence (1918-1920) were hunted down by the Russian secret police. hiding out in in self-imposed exile in his homeland, Nelis was tempted out of isolation by the needs of war-damaged children. This film by Finn Klaus haro has been called a Slavic version of the classic tale of inspirational teacher sacrificing himself for his students. Linc Phelps Springsteen once said “Musicians, we’re a brotherhood and sisterhood of misfits!” and Linc phelps couldn’t be happier to fly that flag! he gets up, he gets down and he writes songs to tell the world about it. Born in country Queensland in 1992, this 26-year-old singer/songwriter has spent a decade immersed in music. Linc then decided to embark on his long awaited solo career, armed with a collection of honest and emotional self-penned songs. GreenBeads productions were employed to produce the debut solo album, and the result is an outstanding 10-track record, drawing on a range of influences from Ryan Adams to Delbert McClinton. The Sunshine Coast Symphony Orchestra is performing a concert for families, featuring the narrated story of Peter and the Wolf in which all the characters are represented by various instruments in the orchestra. N SE QLD, iT COULD be argued that we’ve got way too much diversity in our native flora and fauna. in the plants alone there are over 3500 natives and closer to home on the Sunshine Coast we have over 1500 species of plants. Do we really need all of this diversity? isn’t this all just too complicated to learn about and manage all of this biodiversity, let alone preserve it? Wouldn’t we be doing ourselves a favour by losing some of the species that are struggling to survive anyway? isn’t that what evolution is all about? Just in case you’re starting to worry, i am of course being ever so slightly rhetorical and hopefully getting your attention in the first paragraph and keeping it in the following meanderings. Diversity is well and truly the spice of life and the complex tapestry of life we are blessed with is the legacy of millions of years of evolution and interaction between the plants, the animals, the fungi, the land, the climate and of course more recently the management of indigenous Australians for at least the last 60,000 years… however, after the massive clearance of SE QLD native vegetation over the last 180 years during the European settlement period, we new Australians have a long way to

We’re getting there slowly, but still unfortunately a few too many backward steps… Just this week a friend brought in the last few fruits to ever be produced by the rare Grease Nut Tree Hernandia bivalvis. When last week, with all the pride of expectant parents (subtle attempt to pull on your heart strings) we looked on at the crop of precious fruit this tree was carrying, we didn’t know then that it would be the last crop of fruit this tree would ever produce. This week however when it was felled and chopped, it was all too clear that these would be the last few fruits that this threatened tree would ever produce. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case. Endangered, Rare and Threatened plants are protected both on a State and Federal level, but this only has relevance or effect if the potential remover of vegetation a) knows that the plants are protected (and hopefully chooses not to remove them) or b) they are mapped or tagged in some way to indicate their status (which has problems with vandals then targeting them). Knowledge is the key to preservation of our biodiversity, if you don’t know what it is, please don’t cut it down.

keeping close watch for signs of heat stress. Well established plants have survived well and even grown. Some plants have surprised, particularly those naturally found on soil types other than in one’s own garden. Philotheca queenslandica, Queensland Wax Flower from the coastal heath, appears to be quite happy in the heavy soil of the eastern escarpment and is a lovely garden plant with masses of white or pale pink flowers winter to spring. Brachyscome multifida, Cut-Leaf Daisy, seems to thrive just about anywhere and Barung’s porters Lane nursery has plenty of stock. it is much hardier than some of the related pink flowering cultivars. As a general observation, species of our favourite genera such as Brachyscome and Scaevola grow more vigorously than cultivars and varietal selections. The latter have often been bred or selected in more temperate regions. it is, however, always worth

experimenting. Both survival and growth habit can be quite variable depending on soil conditions, water availability and level of exposure to either shade or sunlight. Leptospermum leuhmannii, an apparently rare tea tree from the Glasshouse Mts, is easily propagated from seed, is a tall, slender shrub in light shade and a multistemmed shrub with an attractive weeping habit in full sun. Others that have surprised have been supposedly slow grass trees, Xanthorrhoea spp., that have continued to grow right through the hot weather and with no additional water. Grevilleas related to G. rosmarinifolia have grown well where others with a different genetic background have failed. it really helps with future planning to keep records. Enjoy your gardening this year, keep the wildlife in mind and don’t be afraid to experiment. A few losses are worth the knowledge gained.

OR MOST OF ThE TiME, it hadn’t been a bad week for Malcolm Turnbull. For starters, it was a non-sitting week, which meant that he didn’t have to spend much public time with the bumblers, urgers and saboteurs sitting around him on the government benches. True, it also deprived him of another chance to scream himself hoarse about the iniquities of Bill Shorten and renewable energy, but no doubt there would be plenty of other opportunities. And of course there were the usual gaffes from the usual suspects. peter Mutton admitted the bleeding obvious about the people swap, and then went further by suggesting that if Washington did not play ball with the asylum seekers on Nauru and Manus, then Canberra would call off the game over the asylum seekers in Costa Rica. This was not only, as the weary Julie Bishop corrected him, not the Turnbull line, but it was more than somewhat unwise given the volatile nature of the paranoid president. Donald Trump wants to be flattered, cajoled and above all treated with absolute subservience; an attempt to threaten him, however quickly withdrawn, is hardly good policy when the deal is far from concluded. Trump may or may not have committed to it, but this hardly matters. Given that he lied, dissembled and fantasised his way through the entire election campaign, his promises are worthless unless they are constantly reinforced with stroking. Our man in Border Control is not a stroker. And then, of course, we had George Brandis (who else?) plausibly accused of having once again misled the senate over the messy affair of the assets of Bell Resources. he immediately fell back on the traditional defence of sprung ministers: he did not recall. But these were just par for the course for a government used to serial incompetence. The good bits included the chance to swan around with Turnbull’s good mate Bibi Netanyahu – admittedly

the israeli prime minister was clearly the superior swanner, but our man did his best to strut, or at least inhabit, the stage. And of course it involved a bonus wedge against the Labor party, far from enamoured of the belligerent visitor. Actually many in the Liberal party also had their reservations, but for the sake of the wedge, they stayed solid. And the real pay off was when Bill Shorten wedged himself; he was so sure that the fair Work Commission would retain all penalty rates that he agreed to accept the outcome. But when it emerged cutting some of the holiday loadings, the opposition leader backtracked at near light speed, giving justified vent to accusations that he was a bad loser railing about the decision of the umpire his own government set up. Turnbull gloated yet again the Shorten’s promises could not be trusted – rather like his own, actually, but moving right along ... So it was all going quite nicely – until, regular as Old Faithful, the Tony Abbott geyser spewed its sludge across the party. And this was not just another spray from the dethroned leader: this was the heavy stuff, a declaration of war against Turnbull with a list of demands to prove it. The demands were little more than silly populism – forget about climate change, which is probably a hoax anyway; keep out the nasty foreigners; scrap the human Rights Commission because the mad right and the Murdoch press (the same thing really) don’t like it; stop all new spending – at a time when the economy is already in the doldrums; and reform the senate, presumably by changing the constitution; good luck with that one, although it is the only one that does not come straight out of the pauline hanson playbook. Turnbull said that Abbott knew exactly what he was doing, although he stopped short of saying that it was either a bid to return to the Lodge or at the very least enforce an agenda which he would never have been game to try while he was in office but would like to foist on his successor, presumably in the hope and expectation of humiliating failure. Sad, said the current prime Minister trumpishly; just

another outburst in which the voters were not interested and which he himself would ignore as a pointless distraction. Well, distraction, sure; but pointless? it made the headlines, which was the first objective, and it will re-energise the extremists in the party room, who may not flock back to Abbott – there is even a still crazier rumour that he is setting the job up for peter Mutton -- but are only too happy to undermine Turnbull. Turnbull’s own troops took the bait and bit back, which was fine by Abbott and his cohorts: for them, there is no such thing as bad publicity. And as long as the media will not ignore them, they will keep the war alive. it is easy to say that Turnbull really needs to do something to slap Abbott down and keep him there: but what? The party is hopelessly divided, Turnbull is far from their pin up boy, and even if he had the will it is hard to see what weapons of destruction he could employ. he has tried summary dismissal, sarcasm, attempting to look the other way. But unless he is prepared to take the pretender front on, to attempt to blow him away in the manner he is trying to dispose of Shorten, he will continue to cop the wrecking, sniping and undermining that Abbott is so enjoying. perhaps our fearless prime Minister will eventually summon up the ticker to do so; in the last few days he has shown that he is getting seriously exasperated by Abbott’s campaign. And one line, at least, he could easily turn back on his tormentor. Calling on political parties to have a purpose and a program – his program – Abbott warned: “our politics can’t just be a contest of toxic egos or someone’s vanity project.” Well, quite. And it is time to expose both Abbott’s toxic ego and the vanity project he launched last week before they become lethally self-fulfilling prophecies..

AST EDiTiON i touched on the idea of being careful what tree you plant where. A good example is the Qld Maple, Flindersia brayleana. This species is endemic to North Queensland, but down here on the Blackall Range, it is considered to have significant environmental weed potential. “But the timber is beautiful!” i hear the learned amongst you cry. yes, well, so is the Camphor Laurel, Cinnamomum camphora, timber, and look what happened there! The problem is two-fold – They get very big, very quickly; and their seed is extremely prolific and viable. i once visited a 25 year-old cabinet timber

plantation of mixed rainforest species, including the Qld Maple, and the forest floor was a waist high carpet of young maple seedlings. At that point i realised what everyone had been saying about them was true. There are worse things out there of course, but it is the sheer size of these trees that scares me. i have seen them planted under powerlines, at property entrances, and along driveways. i even planted one myself about 20 years ago that i have to remove, and i plan to use the timber from that. So try to choose local endemic tree species, or at least species that are not going to cause problems later on. Now go outside and touch a tree.

Environment Minister, Dr Steven Miles, released a discussion paper at www.ehp.qld.gov.au and invited comments until 20 March 2017. “By introducing a 10 cent refund for every eligible drink container, we can decrease litter and waste, reduce the risk to wildlife, increase recycling, create employment opportunities and raise money for charitable causes – or let the kids raise pocket money. “Queensland’s recycling rate sits at about 44 percent, one of the country’s lowest. Queensland is consistently the most littered mainland state. Visually, drink cans and bottles dominate our litter stream. “A 2015 Newspoll showed 86 per cent of Queenslanders wanted a container refund scheme." Dr Miles said most drink containers between 150ml and three litres would be eligible for a refund under the scheme, with containers to be clearly marked. Some drink containers would be exempt, such as containers for plain milk and milk substitutes, while flavoured milk, water, pure juice and wine containers over a specified volume or made of certain materials would not be included in the scheme. OW WE pERCEiVE the world depends on our state of consciousness. When we are tired and stressed we don’t notice the beauty of our environment, we don’t take in what is going on in the lives of others around us, we shut down and try to do we need to do to get through the day. Our brains are wired up by our experiences. in order to master something we have to practise it. When we first learn to drive a car it may seem hard to remember all the different aspects of what is involved, focusing on the traffic, our speed limit, changing gears etc. but after a while it becomes second nature. Repetition hard wires the interneuronal connections in the brain. it is like laying down pathways so the activity becomes easier over time. This doesn’t just apply to mechanical activities but also emotional ones. if we continually experience rejection in relationships or failure in our business dealings this will also get hardwired into the brain. We then see the world through this clouded vision or the narrow clinks of our cavern. A friendly word or action may prompt feelings of apprehension if we have been wired up to expect being hurt or taken advantage of. paranoia is an extreme version of this. The world is perceived as a hostile place where everyone is out to get you.

Regular experience of transcending will cleanse the doors of perception and allow us to experience the infinite value of life. Transcendental Meditation takes us to the depths of the mind, the state beyond all boundaries of thought. Each day, out of our sight and awareness a miracle of communication and loving cooperation is occurring within us. healing, order and Divine design is being restored, and we tend to take this for granted until, for a myriad of reasons, balance is so disrupted that out of necessity, our attention is drawn away from outside distractions and we attempt to regain comfort and balance as soon as we can. yet really most of us have no idea what is inside our bodies, or what is inside our minds or even what it is that drives our emotions. however things are getting complicated, what were once rare health challenges are now becoming more common place. And they shouldn’t be. We struggle through the constant input of noise and disinformation from the outside world and our inner voice is dulled to a whisper. Often we have so many emotional scars that we aren’t even aware of what we really feel about things, people and the way our lives are unfolding. And we can’t communicate fully with others when we can’t even communicate with our own true feelings. And that’s sad because all of us, in the silence and peace of nature or our own sacred space, are able to find a clarity and wisdom that can direct us to the changes we need to make

to heal ourselves and come back into balance. Dr.Deepak Chopra, and Quantum science teach us that every year 98% of the atoms in our bodies renew themselves. What this means at a molecular level is that we are constantly renewing tissues, organs, etc. For example every 3 days we have a new stomach lining, every 3 months we have a new skeletal system, basically within one year we have renewed practically our whole body. This amazing ability to transform the old into the new is strongly influenced or impeded by our thoughts, feelings and life patterns. in our busy world the temptation to pop a vitamin pill, a health drink, or a prescription pill to fix us up is often done without much thought. But remember this, our bodies and we, as multifaceted beings need nourishment, and that takes many forms and ultimately short cuts don’t hold for long.
