Determined to find a solution, he enquired about part-time Adult courses at Selby College and shortly began his qualifications.

A Flourishing Career
Previously a hairdresser of 21 years, the pandemic left Caroline without a job or income – making her question what her future would look like.
As an avid lover of floristry, Caroline spent her time during lockdown watching tutorials on how to present flowers. Flowers have always made Caroline so happy, so she decided she finally wanted to explore this passion further.
Caroline enrolled on the Level 2 Floristry course at Wakefield College so that she could study around her hairdressing schedule.
Caroline said: “Studying floristry is the best thing I’ve ever done. I learnt some amazing Floristry skills and met some lovely people. The course gave me confidence in all aspects of basic floristry, including finances, costing of materials and profit. My tutor was really helpful, helping me overcome any problems I faced and letting me express my creativity as I had so many ideas of my own.”
Since completing the course, Caroline has opened her own business called Anthophilia Flowers by Caroline Poskitt, a unique and bespoke flower stall based in The Glass Works Barnsley Market. The business specialises in all floral aspects and includes a make your own bouquet section where customers pick their own stems and create their own unique designs.
Caroline started out one day a week at the outdoor market, but following popular demand, committed to a permanent base at Barnsley Market. This popularity was even recognised by Look North, with Caroline’s shop appearing on the news to help spread the word about the fantastic independent retailers across the community.
Caroline said: “I wouldn’t have had the opportunities I’ve had if it wasn’t for following my dreams. Changing my career path and entering education again later in life certainly took me out of my comfort zone, but I’m so pleased that I did it - my life has changed for the better.”
Caroline’s tutor Dawn said: “Caroline wanted me to be there to see her open her Floristry shop, which was incredibly rewarding to see as a tutor. Caroline was always keen to learn and refine her skills to become the best florist she can be – I’m confident that she’s going to have a successful, lifelong career in floristry.”
Step 1:
Determine your bouquet’s color scheme
The focal point of most bouquets is a distinct centerpiece flower.
The colours in the bouquet are generally coordinated with the color of this centerpiece, either to compliment that colour or bring out contrast between the different colors of your blooms.
Deciding on the colour scheme of your bouquet before choosing our flower can help you narrow down which flowers you will use in your bouquet.
Choose complimentary colours by selecting ones close to each other on the colour spectrum. Contrasting colours are those that are on opposite sides of the colour spectrum. Remember the order of the colour spectrum with the acronym Roy G Biv, which stands for:
Step 2:
Take into account your bouquet placement
The lighting and environment your bouquet will be in will influence how well your colours work together. Brightly-lit rooms will highlight subtler shades, while darker rooms might require bolder colour choices.
Step 3:
Save money with flowers in season
Buying flowers that are out of season for your bouquet can add a significant cost to your bouquet making. Seasonal flowers, in addition to being more affordable, will also look more natural in your arrangement. Some popular seasonal flowers include:
Spring: Daffodil, hyacinth, lilac, narcissus, peony, stargazer lily, sweet pea and tulip.
Autumn: Aster, chrysanthemum, dahlia, marigold and zinnia.
Winter: Camellia, Casa Blanca lily, daffodil, forget-me-not, holly, jasmine, narcissus, poinsettia, stargazer lily, star of Bethlehem, sweet pea and tulip.
Year-round: Baby’s breath, calla lily, carnations, eucalyptus, gardenia, gladiolus, heather, lily of the valley, orchid and rose.
It is an old European tradition to arrange flowers in odd numbers, and in many cultures, an odd number of flowers indicates joy. Beyond this, an odd number of flowers creates uniformity between your centerpiece and the flowers around it.

Technical Qualifications (HTQs): what are they?
Higher Technical Qualifications are high-quality, job-focused qualifications that are designed to provide the skills which are highly sought by employers.
HTQs are a great route to well-paid, secure and sustainable jobs. We know that employers are crying out for more people qualified in these skills to grow their businesses and the economy.
With employers telling us what skills they need and what ‘quality’ means, students can have confidence that studying an HTQ will be an investment in themselves, and in the future.
What are the benefits of HTQs?
HTQs give you confidence that you are getting the skills employers want. They offer a great deal of flexibility for a variety of learners, including the possibility to study full or part-time. They are a great way to continue your studies and get a good job, or to retrain or progress in your current career.
Are there HTQs available in a wide range of occupations?
The University Centre at the Heart of Yorkshire Education Group currently offers HTQs in:
• Computing
• Architectural Technology for England
• Construction Management for England
• Modern Methods of Construction for England
• Quantity Surveying for England
• General Engineering
How
are HTQs delivered?
HTQs are typically delivered in a classroom setting, with online learning options too. Work placements are not usually needed with a HTQ, except in some professions. However, many courses do offer you practical skills and experience through workshops, labs or work experience.
Part-time or full-time?
You can study HTQs full-time or part-time. Students leaving school or college and studying HTQs as a post-18 option would typically study full-time. It is more likely that where HTQs are being used by individuals already in employment to upskill or retrain, this would be part-time study, allowing them to also work at the same time.
When can you start an HTQ?
You have to be at least 18 to undertake an HTQ and they can be taken after a Level 3 qualification, such as A Levels, T Levels, BTECs or some advanced Apprenticeships, depending on the mandatory qualification within them.
They are suitable for 18+ school/college leavers and you can apply for HTQs whilst you are still at school/college. They are also suitable for anyone looking to upskill or retrain. HTQs can be taken as a standalone qualification or embedded as part of the mandatory qualification within a Higher Apprenticeship.
Which students are most suited to an HTQ?
HTQs can be excellent for all students post-18. They may be particularly relevant for:
• Students looking for a practical, employer-led programme with a job focus, but who prefer classroom-based learning to work-based learning.
• Anyone not ready to leave a learning environment and seek employment, but who does not want to commit to the time and cost of a full degree.
• A HTQ can get them ready and help boost their chances of securing their next step at the end of their HTQ.
Learners who may not feel ready for an apprenticeship or a degree, or those who have not secured the position, apprenticeship or course they wanted.
Because many HTQs start in September or January, there is flexibility. A learner doesn’t have to rush to make a decision following exam results for a September start.
If you’re rethinking university education, now’s the time to get in touch and find out more.

DO SOMETHING FUN
For some, the sheer mention of DIY sends shivers down their spine. For others, DIY jobs are an enjoyable experience to build or fix something yourself.
Our Construction Department offers FREE* DIY Skills courses throughout the year in Bricklaying, Plumbing, Joinery and Capentry at Castleford College and Selby College. Alternatively, if you want to or currently work within the Construction industry, we have entrylevel to Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) in Construction too! DIY enthusiast, Terri Holt, recently carried out a Bricklaying course to learn some new skills she can put into practice at home.
“Even though I feel quite comfortable doing DIY projects, I still felt nervous approaching the purpose-built Construction workshop at Selby College. I think doing any form of training when you are a little bit older brings more apprehension than if you were a school leaver fresh out of education.
However, as soon as I arrived it was easily diminished by a friendly tutor and other students who were of varied ages and had different intentions for doing the course. One of which was an ex-soldier who had now gone into business as a chimney sweep and needed basic skills to be able to mend chimneys when needed. There was a couple who attended together who wanted to build a step at the front of their house and another person who was planning an extension.
My reason – I wanted an outdoor kitchen! One of those you see in villas or on Selling Sunset but at a fraction of the price tag, so my bright idea was to build one myself!
We were first given a demonstration on how to position yourself then how to lay the mortar, lay bricks and most importantly ensure they are level in all ways. We then set up in our station to give it a go ourselves.
The morning went super-fast after building a pyramid first, we then
moved on to a half brick return corner. Everyone worked at their own speed, supported by the tutor who answered any questions we had along the way.
Proud as punch of my tiny wall, I left feeling like I’d had a productive morning and happy to have learnt a new skill. Many of the other students were going on to do the other courses available in Carpentry and Tiling they enjoyed it that much – and I think I will too in the near future. In the meantime, wish me luck with my outdoor kitchen, it might be finished by 2030 if I am lucky!”
Top tip: Wear old clothes and either have knee pads in trousers or bring something to kneel on - I now have a newfound respect for builders’ knees!
If you want to follow in Terri’s footsteps, now’s the time to upgrade your DIY Skills. See page 6 for our range of Construction courses. APPLY NOW

Be Bold. Be Beautiful.
Experience high-end beauty treatments at a fraction of the cost.
Did you know that you can enjoy a range of treatments at a fraction of the cost in our state-of-the-art hair and beauty salons?
Based at Castleford College and Selby College, our hairdressing and beauty therapy salons provide a total body and mind experience where you can revitalise.
Using products only available to the industry, you can enjoy high-quality products such as Dermalogica, Eve Taylor, Wella, Elemis and Andrew Barton, at a fraction of the cost.
Hear from our regular customer Callie about her experience:
“I have always loved a day at the spa or a beauty treatment, but they were always a rare treat until I discovered Elements at Castleford College and Aspire at Selby College. The Hair & Beauty team and students at both sites have always put me at ease and tailored my experience based on what treatment I feel I needed to help make me feel relaxed or rejuvenated.
I’ve tried a number of treatments from electric facials and back massages to eye treatments, and I’ve had a really pleasant experience every time. The students and tutors are always friendly and are knowledgeable about the treatment they’re delivering. The students use the latest industry equipment and products such as Dermalogica and Olaplex, meaning you get a salon experience and treatment for a quarter of the price you would usually pay.
The treatments I’ve had include:
A Joico hair strengthener: I have bleached hair, so I always feel that my hair lacks shine or elasticity. The students tailored this treatment to my hair concerns and I can honestly say that my hair has never felt so soft and bouncy! They also recommended products I could use to improve my haircare at home.
Electrical facials: I love a good facial and the electrical facials always leave my skin feeling clean, fresh and like I’ve had a workout for my face! The electrical equipment is the type which you would see in high-end salons and it really takes the treatment to the next level. Every time I’ve had an electrical facial the students have given me a full consultation to establish my skin type and condition and have then tailored the treatment to this. They always take the time to give me great aftercare advice, so that I can get the best results out of the facial.
Body massage: The body massages are perfect if you feel like you to need to relieve some muscle tension or unwind. You can choose from a back massage, a fully body massage or even a mechanical massage, depending on what level of treatment you would like.
Eye treatments: I regularly get my eyebrows shaped and it’s at a third of cost of what I’d pay at other salons. The salons also offer other eye treatments including lash and brow tints.
Providing a total body and mind experience, where you can relax, revitalise and re-energise in stylishly contemporary surroundings, our hairdressing and beauty therapy salons provide a retreat where you can revitalise. To book an appointment:
With technological advances happening daily, it can often feel as though it’s hard to keep up with the world’s digital transformation. You might find yourself questioning – do I have the right skills to do my profession in the future? What will my role look like in light of the introduction of new technologies? Do I need to consider more sustainable methods of working? Or, you may even be looking at ways of entering a completely new industry or role.
Whilst this may all feel very daunting, you are not on your own! Courses called ‘Skills Bootcamps’ have been created by the UK’s government to address this and help prepare adult learners like you for the economy of the future.
Through these programmes, you can learn the necessary knowledge and skills for new jobs in growing sectors, such as the automotive industries, construction, green technologies, engineering and more.
Equally, if you are looking to start a new career path or enter the job market, Skills Bootcamps can help job seekers gain the skills to move into sectors where there are skills shortages.
That is why we have designed our range of Skills Bootcamp programmes with national and local employers, ensuring that our learners can gain the skills which are in high demand in their industry of choice.
For example, our Skills Bootcamp in the Principles of Carbon Capture and Storage – which was developed with Drax Power - has already trained 45 people in this climate saving technology – which will play a leading role in helping the UK reach its net zero target by 2050.
Drax and completed the course, said: The programme provided me with insight into the future technologies that are being developed at Drax Power, giving me the opportunity to be a part of this project. I’ve enjoyed learning about the mathematical theory behind Carbon Capture and Storage and how my employer plans to to utilise it. I look forward to expanding my knowledge and getting involved in Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) when it’s implemented at Drax Power.”
Student Phil Worth, said:
“I wanted to upskill in Carbon Capture and Storage and learn more about prepamatium, so the course seemed the perfect choice for me. The programme is well structured, and the content is very informative, meaning I’ve gained knowledge in all aspects of Carbon Capture and Storage. I plan to put my new skills into practice once my employer Enfinium has built its Carbon Capture and Storage plant.”

It is easy to apply for a Skills Bootcamp if you meet the eligibility criteria, which is:
• You are aged 19 and over
• Live in England
• Have the right to work in the UK
• Meet residency requirements
Having Skills Bootcamps on your CV will show prospective employers that you have taken the initiative to acquire skills that are relevant to the sector.
Will Skills Bootcamps lead me to get a job or a promotion?
After completing a Skills Bootcamp, you are guaranteed a job interview – however, there is no guarantee of a job.
For those in an existing role, completing a Skills Bootcamp can create opportunities for a new role or responsibilities.
