Putting Names with Faces

In any new place, whether the schools of our youth, a senior living community, or the chapel for our TV Mass, it takes a while before we can put names with faces.

In one of the Sunday Gospel readings this month, Jesus asked the Disciples the same question. The Unlikely Sculpture Back in the 1930’s, a small town sprang up, providing needed work for laborers and housing for families. On the grounds of the community building that initially served as church, school, and recreation center, a tall flagpole would stand. A sculptor chiseled at the flagpole’s base as the figures of six people took shape around it.

Sometimes, the art teacher took students outside to watch as work on the sculpture progressed. Who would the people portrayed in stone be?

Our country’s Founding Fathers would have made likely candidates for the base of a flagpole, but George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and other central figures in the birth of our nation didn’t emerge.

The building of the town was part of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s “New Deal,” but none of the figures on the flagpole’s

base looked like him, either.

Scripture tells us that the Lord Jesus, known as a carpenter’s son, chose fishermen and a publican as Apostles. The sculptor looked to ordinary people as he pursued His work, too.

The finished statue included a laborer with a shovel in hand and

another with a hammer, a mother and child, a young woman holding a tennis racket, and a man in suit and tie. They represented the townsfolk.

Jesus came to build a community of faith, and progress continues.

In His compassion, the Lord works with us as He chisels away at our reluctance and faults.

As it happened, the sculptor modeled one of the figures on the flagpole after his wife, and the town’s art teacher soon recognized her. In the inspiration of people around us every day, do we recognize the face of the Lord?

Summertime and water go together. Watching or reminiscing about children splashing around in a swimming pool, doing some fishing, or quietly taking in the beauty of a sunset reflected on a lake’s placid water give us enjoyment.

During Heart of the Nation’s summer fund drive, your gift will reflect the joy that you find in My Sunday Mass. During the summer, in months that the Catholic liturgical calendar calls “Ordinary Time,” your generosity is extraordinarily important.

“Donations go up and down during the year. We make a few waves with the summer fund drive so that we can meet the costs of producing and bringing the Mass to you,” said Fr. Mark Payne, chaplain for Heart of the Nation.

Just as we can see a reflection on the water, “so the heart reflects the person” (Proverbs 27). As you look into your heart, please consider a gift that will share your faith with all who depend on the TV Mass.

Father’s Day Prayer Loving Father, Please bless fathers, grandfathers, and godfathers with patience

to teach repeatedly, both gentleness and strength, readiness to forgive, grace to love unconditionally, delight in seeing

children grow, wisdom to lend a hand

or let go, generosity to give

of themselves while living faithfully, and the joy of life

with You eternally.

Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love) Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia (“The Joy of Love”) talks about love in the family in ways beyond the widely publicized points concerning divorced and remarried Catholics.

The 264-page document follows years of input from individuals, families, and groups including the laity and the Synod of Bishops. An Apostolic Exhortation does not define Church doctrine, but it does provide formal instruction from a Pope. The Joy of Love is Pope Francis’ second Apostolic Exhortation, and it refers in numerous instances to his earlier Evangelii Gaudium (“The Joy of the Gospel”).

People “very often respond as best they can to the Gospel amid their limitations.”

Rather than providing new, black-and-white, canonical rules, The Joy of Love teaches the importance of pastoral discernment with priests helping the faithful to understand how Church teachings apply in their various and sometimes complex circumstances. Referring to his earlier Apostolic Exhortation, the Holy Father reminds us that everyone can participate in the life of the Church in some way.

Families can manifest the Church while helping children “sink roots in the rich soil of a collective history.” Grandparents, Pope Francis explained, often pass along important values to grandchildren.

“Listening to the elderly tell their stories is good for children and young people; it makes them feel connected....”

The Joy of Love expresses the importance of loving those who have felt outcast or lonely. Instead of averting our eyes from some people—even family members—the gaze of the faithful should express love and contemplation of each person as having unique purpose and great worth. “A look of appreciation has enormous importance,” Pope Francis said.

Did You Know?

Scripture describes fathers, both human and divine. In the beginning was God, and Adam began the human genealogy. In the New Testament, Joseph provides a model of righteousness through thick and thin as he took Mary as his wife and protected his family from persecution under King Herod.

Another father in the New Testament appears in three of the four Gospels.

Jairus, a synagogue official, desperately wants the Lord to save his daughter from death at her young age.

Making his way to Jesus through a crowd, Jairus pleads with the Lord to come and lay His hands on her. They set off toward the house. Along the way, Jesus tells Jairus to fear not but just have faith.

Upon their arrival, the mourning changes to ridicule when Jesus says that the girl has only fallen asleep.

The crowd is shuttled outside. Inside, the Lord takes the girl’s hand and raises her up. He then tells her parents to give the child something to eat—nourishment for the living! As you reflect upon and celebrate the love of fathers on Father’s Day and the ways that they share their faith, you can find the accounts of the miracle in the Gospels of Mark (chapter 5), Matthew (chapter 9), and Luke (chapter 8).
