A PLACE FOR LOCAL YOUTH TO SUCCEED Heart of Oregon trains tomorrow’s workforce today.

We are a Central Oregon nonprofit engaging local opportunity youth ages 16-24. Every year, we create opportunities for paid job skills training, education, and leadership development for over 300 young people who face major barriers to success. Youth work to maintain hiking trails, build affordable homes, and operate a thrift store while earning wages or stipends and learning the soft skills employers seek. We are empowering a generation of youth to believe in themselves and achieve self-sufficiency.

Harnessing data to inform services and reach equity goals This year, we began a three-year Data Driven Impact Initiative to better capture and communicate Heart of Oregon (HOC)’s positive impact on the community we serve.

STORIES FROM OUR YOUTH

Thyreicia, Warm Springs In 2018, Thyreicia was chosen as a finalist for The Corps Network’s national ‘Corpsmember of the Year’ award. She has served more than 2,100 hours improving public lands since 2016, while earning over $5,000 for college through her AmeriCorps service. She accomplished all of this while representing her Tribe as Miss Warm Springs 2018, attending community college part-time, and navigating long commutes to do it all.

After taking a USAjobs.gov workshop with Heart of Oregon, she is currently seeking seasonal employment with the US Forest Service, and has a long-term goal of becoming a pilot to fight wildfires from the sky.

Now, I teach new corpsmembers skills and go out of my way to start a conversation— just because I want to. Joining Heart of Oregon was probably the best decision of my life, and I wouldn’t be the same without it.”

When Justina joined the Heart of Oregon Thrift Store team in 2016, she faced a lot of barriers and life uncertainty, and struggled to show outward confidence. For two years at the Thrift Store and our Camp LEAD summer camp, she built up her skills, confidence, and trusting relationships, all while earning her high school diploma. Then, she progressed to our AmeriCorps natural resources program in Bend, and plans to start attending COCC in the fall.

“Heart of Oregon pretty much became my family.

When I started here I didn’t talk for the first four months, unless spoken to. Now I’ve become a leader and a role model and aspire to be a crew leader here. HOC inspired me and gave me a work ethic.” Kenny is currently a Heavy Equipment Operator Apprentice at Knife River.

Selena, Warm Springs Not too long ago, Selena never thought she’d be able to catch up to her peers and earn a high school diploma. But she had big goals for her future, and didn’t give up. Through Heart of Oregon’s YouthBuild program, she reengaged in learning and earned her GED…and then kept right on going, earning her diploma and walking with her original class in June, 2018! Over the summer, she built affordable housing, earning an AmeriCorps college scholarship. Now, Selena is a full-time student at COCC, pursuing her goal to become an attorney and own a construction company.

STEWARDSHIP: ABOUT THE PROGRAM Stewardship members keep it clean by working on environmental projects throughout the year. You will help with waste management, recycling, litter patrol, Fire Free Week, and fuels reduction projects. You can join Stewardship any time during the year and start earning a wage today while gaining valuable job skills and soft skills to help set you up for tomorrow.

YOUTHBUILD: ABOUT THE PROGRAM Transform your life and your role in society by earning your GED, high school diploma, or college credits; learning job skills; and serving your community through building affordable housing. As a member, you’ll divide your time among classroom, construction sites, and leadership development alongside your cohort—aka, your new best friends.

MADRAS THRIFT STORE: ABOUT THE PROGRAM If you’re a Jefferson County student living with disability and you would like to gain retail and customer service skills along with countless other workplace soft skills, there’s a place for you at the Thrift Store in Madras. As a volunteer, you may earn credit in your Youth Transition Program for your time at our store, as well as earning Goal Engagement Incentive bonuses along the way based on your individual progress. The skills you’ll learn will prepare you for future employment opportunities, and you’ll have fun at the same time.

COYCC: ABOUT THE PROGRAM CENTRAL OREGON YOUTH CONSERVATION CORPS Calling Central Oregon teens, we have over 70 summer jobs for you! Do you love being in the outdoors? Or, perhaps it’s a place you haven’t yet explored?

Either way, COYCC is an awesome opportunity for you this summer. You’ll work for eight weeks, Monday-Thursday (hello three-day weekends!). You’ll earn over $3,000 in wages, make great new friends, work alongside US Forest Service Specialists learning hands-on skills, and get to see beautiful places in the forest. Plus, you can earn a school-to-work high school credit and add work experience to your resume.

CAMP LEAD: ABOUT THE PROGRAM LEADERSHIP | EMPOWERMENT | ADVOCACY | DEVELOPMENT Camp LEAD provides the discovery, whimsy, and magic of summer camp in addition to job skills and leadership training.

Youth who experience disabilities attend this camp for a number of reasons, but campers come out of LEAD with new friends, heightened self-confidence, and real-world skills that translate to future successes. Work alongside your fellow campers, making friends, building relationships, and pushing your limits.
