ello and welcome from Tynecastle Park.

We took a small step towards the Championship title at East End Park last Saturday. Not as big a step as I’d hoped, but a step forward nonetheless. You want to win every game you play and that’s what the aim was last weekend, however we came up against a very stuffy Dunfermline side who made it difficult for us to play. We had 12 shots on goal but we weren’t able to put the ball in the back of the net. There were some good periods of possession but the final ball just wasn’t there, and that’s where we are looking to improve as we head into the final few games of this campaign. Our objective at the beginning of the season was to win the league and we are within touching distance of that. Of course, we would have liked to have made it more comfortable for ourselves in recent weeks but it has turned out that way. The onus is on us, as a team and a staff, to put that right in the final four games. Tonight we welcome Peter Grant, the players and staff of Alloa Athletic to Tynecastle. We have won both league games against Alloa so far this season but they are fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table, so we know it will be a testing encounter. We’re under the floodlights tonight and live on TV so I’m expecting a good performance. It’s a big chance to extend our lead at the top of the league even further and take a giant step towards promotion. Enjoy the game, Robbie Neilson

From next month, Big Hearts Community Trust will be delivering the SPFL Trust’s Off the Bench initiative, a major new programme for young people, aimed at preventing anti-social behaviour. Off the Bench is a 16-week programme for 18-24-year-olds funded by the Scottish Government’s CashBack scheme. From the community facilities at Tynecastle Park, these young people will be able to attend courses, split between class time and physical activity, to help them build a better path, going forward.

was a fan of Heart of Midlothian Football Club long before I was a fan of football.

I don’t remember when it started but for as long as I can remember my granny, Margaret, used to tell me stories about her younger brother Danny Paton and his time as a Heart of Midlothian player. You see, my gran wasn’t like most other folks’ grannies. Sure, she loved to knit and make soup, but she was also positively fitba daft and loved to talk about her brother - the football star. Given the slightest opportunity or opening she would talk and talk about his achievements and my young eyes would light up whenever she did. She would become so excited and animated as she recalled the memories from her youth following Danny and the Hearts. He was her hero and he would become mine too. Danny, born Robert but that’s another story, was brought up with his family in Breich which was a small mining village in West Lothian. If you were a Breich bairn your fate was sealed almost from the day you were born. The local colliery, known as ‘Blinky’, was waiting for you. Unless that is you had some talent or gift that could take you in a different direction. For Danny that was to be his skill with a tanner ba’ and he was a winger. As a teenager he played for the Woodmuir Colliery football team and it wasn’t long before Newtongrange Star spotted his talent. There he played alongside the likes of Dave MacKay and Alex Young and in 1957 he followed them to Tynecastle when Hearts signed him up. The Hearts of the day was one of the finest club sides ever assembled. It’s easy to say that Danny might have played a lot more games had the team not been full of stellar names such as Bauld, Conn and Wardhaugh, not to mention MacKay, Young and Cumming. But that never fazed him, and he went on to make his Hearts debut in the 57/58 record breaking league winning side, even scoring in his second match in an 8-0 thrashing of Queens Park. Danny returned home that night and his family received him like royalty.

behind Willie Wallace. It was also the season that brought him his finest personal achievement in the maroon jersey he so loved. On 8th September the team travelled to Easter Road to take on Hibernian in a league match. My gran didn’t travel to away matches and on this day decided to go to Portobello with her sister for a day trip. She used to tell me about how she was on tenterhooks all day wondering how Danny and the boys had done. In the days before mobile phones and technology it was a matter of waiting for the news to filter through. As they travelled home to West Lothian by bus they glanced out of a window and saw a newsagent change over the sign on their newsstand. She couldn’t believe her eyes. ‘Paton Scores Hat Trick for Hearts’. I can only imagine the reaction on that bus given she would tell me that story 25 years after it happened and barely be able to contain herself. Hearts had won 4 nil and her brother had scored three of them. He also picked up a League Cup winners medal later that same season. Danny left Hearts the next year after a serious knee injury. He went to England and played for Oxford United and after a couple of years took the opportunity to go and play in the USA in the NASL. He played for Washington Darts and travelled across America playing the game he loved. In 1970, two

At the end of that season he travelled with Hearts to play in a tour of North America. His postcards home still serve as reminders of the great adventure he was experiencing. He scored in consecutive 13-2 wins against select teams from Manitoba and Alberta. The group also played Manchester City in a series of exhibitions and lifted the Empire State Cup in New York. All a very long way from the grass pitch that faced onto his back garden at home. In 1959 his Hearts career was interrupted when he was called up to perform his National Service. He was stationed at Houndstone Barracks in Somerset and was loaned out to Yeovil Town for two seasons. He shone. He scored 41 times in 95 appearances and is considered one of their finest ever players. He returned to Hearts a more mature player and in the 1961/62 season he played 22 games, scoring 7 goals. A double in a 2-2 draw against Celtic at Parkhead was certainly the highlight. He purchased a tenement flat in Gorgie Road and the rear window overlooked the away end of Tynecastle. My gran, her sister Janet, and their friends would sit on the sill and watch Danny play. Knowing my gran and her sister I’m sure her voice would have been heard over any number of visiting fans such was their love and support for their little brother. 1962/63 was his finest period in a Hearts jersey. He played and scored regularly and finished as second top scorer in the team,

months after Brazil had won the World Cup, Santos played Washington in an international exhibition match. In the Santos team that day were 4 World Cup winners. Carlos Alberto, Clodoaldo, Joel and one Edson Arantes do Nascimento aka: Pele. A couple of weeks later a letter arrived from the States. Inside was a cutting from the Washington Post showing our family’s hero, Danny, playing next to the great one. The Blinky boy that had practiced his skills as a wee boy with his pals in a small village in West Lothian was sharing the same patch of grass as the greatest player the world had ever seen. Danny eventually came home and lived the remainder of his days in the house he grew up in. As a young boy I found myself muted by awe in his presence. A humble gentleman, he wasn’t one for recounting the days of his Hearts career. My gran did that for him and she had a ready audience in me who could never hear enough about it. My mum’s brother, Rab, started to take me to the Hearts matches and my love for Heart of Midlothian Football Club was firmly cemented in my heart and soul. Danny himself would sometimes attend the matches as a guest of the club and he’d greet the fans attending hospitality. The best part about this for him was meeting up with his fellow players from his era and recounting the stories of the great times they’d shared together. He loved Hearts. In March of 2011 Danny passed away after a battle with Motor Neurone Disease. The day after his funeral Hearts were playing St Mirren and a few members of my family were invited by the club to attend the match as guests. The team bowed for him and the stadium stood silent in his memory. In the 93rd minute, Rudi Skacel, stuck out a leg and scored a last-minute winner in a 3-2 win. My gran and Janet leapt out of their seats and roared with a joy that was almost impossible to imagine they were capable of just 24 hours earlier. I had a lump in my throat thinking that’s how they must have reacted when they were watching Danny score from the tenement window in Gorgie Road all those years ago. I cried a wee bit. That’s why Hearts are the team for me.

“AULD REEKIE SUPPORTS THEM WITH PRIDE”

earts’ Museum regularly benefits from the generous donation of historic items that are associated with the club. Due to the current health-related restrictions, many of these items have yet to be displayed in the Museum, including a Christmas card used by the club in the 1930s. This graphically explains those famous words, “Auld Reekie supports them with pride.” Auld Reekie is, of course, a Scottish version of Old Smokey, a nickname given to the City of Edinburgh. Essentially, the name originated from the cloud of smoke that hung over the city centre on days with little or no wind. This usually occurred in the early evening, when the smoke from tenement chimneys merged with the smoke-stacks of the major breweries, print-works and engineering factories that ringed the city centre. It was said that the people of the Fife coast could tell when it was time for their tea when the blue mist hung over the capital. That situation gradually changed after the Second World War with the use of gas and electricity, and by 1995 Edinburgh had become a smokeless zone. It was Auld Reekie no more, but the name lingers on. One thing that the coal fires of homes and industry did generate was the important trade of chimney sweeping and this was a big employer in the South Side of Edinburgh when Hearts were formed. That was underlined in the early days of Hearts when almost half a team of sweeps were said to feature in the initial line-ups, including Peter Donoghue from Causewayside and the brothers, John and Peter McBeath, who came from the Pleasance. THE WATSONIANS Another rare archive item is a picture of a Hearts team from 1928, wearing a rather unusual maroon and white hooped shirt. Not surprisingly, because this jersey resembled the rugby colours of the famous Edinburgh school, this outfit was usually referred to as the club’s “Watsonian” strip. The hoops were introduced following a directive from the Management

Committee of the Scottish League which stated that white knickers were to be worn by the home team and black by the away side. As a result, Hearts’ Directors decided to have a maroon and white hooped shirt to wear away from home, because there was confusion among the players when a maroon shirt was worn with black shorts. This rule was actually rescinded in June 1929 at the AGM of the Scottish League, as it was generally unpopular and not always observed by the clubs. However, Hearts continued to use the hoops until 11 November 1950. That afternoon, Hearts played against the red-shirts of Third Lanark and due to the colour clash, the team played in royal blue, the new alternative strip. The “Watsonian” shirt was then handed down to the Reserves, because the big-team players felt that they never performed well in the hooped jersey. In addition, the post-war Board of Directors never really liked the shirt and it was soon was relegated to a training outfit. The Hearts team depicted in the photo was full of class and character, but like so many Tynecastle sides of the period, it promised so much, and then fell at the final hurdle. Jack Harkness was in goal, with the Scottish International keeper coming from Queens Park in May 1928. He was unusually popular throughout the country, due to his sporting approach or perhaps it was because Jack was one of the “Wembley Wizards” who defeated England by 5-1 in 1927.

Right-back was Andy Herd, although this utility man could have played in any defensive position. He did this in some style for ten years after Andy was signed from Dunfermline Athletic in July 1927. The Fife miner had an enormous and powerful presence on the field and this was demonstrated in 1934 at East End Park when he dislocated a shoulder, had it re-set on the field, and played on! His rearguard partner was Bob King a lean, fit and robust leftback. He played just over 200 games during a ten-year spell, after being recruited from Dalkeith Thistle in May 1923. The man from Newtongrange took no prisoners and in 1932, he was famously sent-off when Hearts lost 1-0 against Rangers in the Scottish Cup before a record 53,396 at Tynecastle. Hearts’ half-back line had plenty of experience, particularly the former Hibernian captain, Peter Kerr, who came up from Leith in May 1926 and played until August 1930 when he was 39 years of age. Always purposeful, Peter was a steady influence and with his motivational quality he also became captain of Hearts. In the centre of the half-back line was 25-year old John Johnston who came from Ardeer Thistle in November 1921 and played over 300 games for Hearts. The future Internationalist was a dominant and indefatigable defender and clearly intelligent, being a mathematics teacher during his entire career at Tynecastle. Hearts’ midfield trio was completed by the Internationalist, Bob Bennie, who was sturdy and strong, although his reputation was based on creative skill. He came from Limerigg, near Falkirk, and Bob’s creative boot cost Hearts a then mouth-watering sum of £2,300 when he was signed from Airdrieonians in May 1928. On the right-wing there was Jimmy Smith, a speed-merchant and trickster, who was a fine provider of ammunition for Barney Battles. The Glaswegian was signed in August 1924 from Clydebank for a fee of £2,130. He would have played for Scotland, but for his colourful lifestyle that once saw him disappear to work as a steward on a Trans-Atlantic liner. Jimmy’s inside-man was the classy 33-year old, George Miller, whose close control and

passing skills were of the highest order. He came from Tranent Juniors in 1915 and helped Hearts to the Victory Cup Final in 1919 after completing his military service. George was released in 1922 as football interfered with his work as a solicitor and it cost £1,200 to bring the Edinburgh man back to Tynecastle from Raith Rovers in January 1925. Hearts main attacking threat was the redoubtable Barney Battles who spent his youth in Boston and was capped by the USA before leaving Boston Wonder Workers to join Hearts in July 1928. The powerful striker scored a remarkable 44 League goals in 1930-31 which remains a club record and he eventually hit a total of 151 competitive goals with shots and headers from every conceivable angle. It would have been more but for a repetitive injury which forced his retirement in 1936 when only 30 years of age. One of Barney’s left-wing providers was Edinburgh-born Dave Edgar who was signed by Hearts in October 1924 from East Fife for a fee of £1,000. Standing just over 5’6” he was quick and elusive on the wing, but he never fully achieved his potential after a broken leg in 1925. Dave did manage to score Hearts’ 2000th Scottish League goal in February 1927 during a match against Motherwell, before heading off to join Aldershot of the Southern League in June 1929. Supporting Edgar at inside-left was Lachie MacMillan a bustling and aggressive attacker who gave defenders no peace. He was signed in April 1924 from his home-town club, Hamilton Academical, for a fee of £1,960 and he scored 53 competitive goals in 180 appearances. This would have been many more, but he had long periods of injury including two broken limbs and a cartilage operation. On Tour The 1950’s Tours

hroughout the most successful decade in the Club’s history, manager Tommy Walker forged close bonds between his talented players by taking them on six post-season tours to destinations as far apart as the USA, South Africa and Australia. This season, I’m going to take a look at the memorabilia associated with Hearts’ tours of the 1950’s.

fter the relative ease of Montreal, Hearts faced the more daunting prospect of three consecutive matches against Manchester United in ten days. To make matters even more interesting, the matches would take place thousands of miles apart. Hearts arrived in New York City on 20 May 1960 and checked into the Governor Clinton Hotel, now the Stewart Hotel, on 7th Avenue, a long throw-in from Madison Square Gardens. That evening, the players were treated to an outing to the Radio City Theatre, the iconic theatre and cinema located within the Rockefeller Centre. The next day, Saturday, was a sightseeing day and many of the players as well as Tommy Walker and Donald McLeod made their way to the top of the Empire State Building only to be disappointed as low cloud made it very difficult to see terribly much. That evening, the players were entertained again, this time as guests of the American Soccer League, at the Latin Quarter Night Club. Originally opened in 1942, it featured big-name acts such as Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Mae West as well as chorus girls. Match day was a Sunday and whilst the players relaxed before the game, Tommy Walker went to church before turning his attention to the match which was played at Downing Stadium on Randall’s Island where Hearts had taken on United’s rivals Manchester City in 1958. The stadium was largely open to the elements and threatened heavy rain kept the crowd low notwithstanding that Hearts and City had served up an eleven-goal thriller only two years previously. The 10,411 watching were treated to a pipe band and watched as the British Consul General in New York ceremonially kicked off. The crowd didn’t have long to wait for a couple of goals in this one as Hearts made the worst possible start against their English opponents. As the New York Times put it on the following day, “Hearts walked into an ambush”. After just ninety seconds of the game, Mark Pearson “gained control of the ball about 30 yards from the nets”, went on a run, found himself clean through and duly dispatched the ball past Gordon Marshall. Four minutes later, United had doubled their lead. Johnny Giles fed Alex Dawson and from 15 yards, his shot flew into the net. Hearts, wearing their candy-striped jerseys fought back and put pressure on the United goal. Andy Bowman fired home but was adjudged offside. Hearts’ best chance fell to Gordon Smith early in the second half but, with an empty goal at his mercy, his shot was somehow blocked by Shay Brennan. The New York Times reported that Harry Gregg in the United goal “used his hands, arms, head and feet in remarkable fashion to keep the Scots at bay”. Inevitably, as Hearts pushed forward in search of a foothold back into the game, United were able to exploit the gaps and with just three minutes left, Alex Dawson got his second and United’s third goal to wrap up a 3-0 win. It’s not clear how many were left in the stadium to see it, however, as with about five minutes of the match remaining, the predicted rain storm started and the crowd scattered for the exits. The closest thing to a programme which exists for this match is Vol 26 No 19 of American League Soccer News dated 22 May 1960, the day of the game and which was given away free of charge in order to promote soccer in the area. A single large sheet of paper around twice the size of A4 and on flimsy paper, not many have survived making it one of the most valuable Hearts programmes in existence. The front has the headline “Manchester United of England vs Hearts of Scotland” and the wonderful sub-heading “English and Scottish Booters Again Welcomed in New York”. The editor writes that “Its an honour to welcome

distinguished guests, a pleasure the second time while on a third occasion we consider them ‘one of the family’. And that is our sentiments today as we again extend a friendly hand to Manchester United of England and Hearts of Midlothian of Scotland”. The “Hearts of Midlothian” was a common and perhaps understandable error. The column recalled the last visit of Hearts in 1958 and stated that “since that eventful game, Hearts last summer visited Australia, where they made a shambles of the Down Under Patriots, winning by lopsided 13-0 etc scores on a 10-game tour”. That wasn’t quite true, of course. Hearts’ largest win in Australia had been 10-0 whereas they had scored 13 twice on the 1958 tour of Canada.

The reverse of the programme has “Probable line-ups” in the top left corner with a formidable Hearts forward line of Smith, Blackwood, Bauld, Crawford and Hamilton due to play. Beneath that, there was news that Ira G Harrison had once again donated a trophy for the teams to play for. Hearts had lifted the Empire State Cup against Manchester City and this time the teams lined up to play for the British Commonwealth Cup. Interestingly, the programme refers to Mr Harrison as “a former Manchester United soccer player” but there doesn’t seem to be any reference to his having played for their first

I mentioned earlier that this was a scarce programme. With the global popularity of Manchester United as a brand, that makes it very collectable indeed. In 2019, a copy of this single piece of paper sold at auction for around £4,500 making it the most valuable Hearts programme ever sold.

In the right hand column, some details of the day’s festivities were unveiled. As well as the British Consul General, the game was to be attended by Sir Francis Evans, former British ambassador to Israel and Lord Malcolm Douglas Hamilton. The pipe band was the British Commonwealth Pipe Band and there would be a guard of honour from the Scottish War Veterans of America, the British War Veterans of New York and others.
