WELCOME FROM THE HEAD

After wrestling the ‘Beast from the East’ this week and looking out over a very white Wood Green Common it has felt more like the depths of winter than the start of spring. It’s hard for parents when schools close, so thank you for your patience as we coped with some fairly dramatic weather. I’ll stick with the theme of spring though if you don’t mind. Perhaps through will alone we can usher it in.

I am absolutely delighted to say that Mrs Roberts and family now have a new edition. Monty Roberts was born in February weighing a very healthy 9 lbs 7 oz. I am sure you will join me in wishing them the very best. Parenthood and childhood are very precious things and it’s always healthy for us as teachers and parents to reflect on that.

Spring is also in the air when a few daffodils emerge outside the sports hall to be followed by a group of rather surly looking Year 11s having sat yet another assessment.

Curriculum and courses are changing at a fast pace and students are adapting quickly to the changing expectations.

Our teaching and learning are also changing to support the demands of a syllabus that requires much more knowledge and recall. This means that in the run up to Easter Year 11 sit more and more assessments so that we can get them into the habit of doing this for examinations. Behind closed doors I might question the value of examinations in such practical subjects as Computing but the reality is that we will do our very best to ensure that students get the grades that they deserve. That means that for a few years to come at least they will be emerging looking sullen from the sports hall in the spring and summer.

The Grove will finally be getting its own new beginning in September 2018 as we open the new school in temporary accommodation. Ms Santi has done an amazing job of preparing for the opening and we look set to have a great new site in the Professional Development Centre at Haringey. This school demonstrates our collective commitment to inclusion and ensuring that students can have a provision that really meets their needs.

We are looking forward to some new beginnings.

Romeo & Juliet On Thursday 1st February over 40 of our students took to the stage in an abridged performance of William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. The evening was a resounding success with students rising to the challenge of performing a Shakespearian text. The performance was interspersed with the spectacular musical stylings of Heartlands House Band and Shout-Out singing group.

They selected songs from today which captured the spirit of the play and gave the show a modern twist. Stand out moments included the dramatic stage fight between Mercutio and Tybalt, played by Joel Bombatu and Jaydon Rhule. The pair had rehearsed their scene tirelessly, which resulted in a tense and climactic moment with one member of the audience shouting ‘No!’ in desperation as Mercutio was struck down on stage. This was immediately followed by an emotional performance from Annie Donlon playing Romeo as her character lamented Mercutio’s murder and cursed Tybalt for this terrible act. The whole cast worked together to create a slick and professional production that was well received by the large audience of parents, staff and peers who turned out to support the students in the show. We are incredibly proud of all those involved, who demonstrated the beautiful work that is made possible with hard work, dedication and passion.

We hope to see even more students auditioning and taking part in performances in the future as we build on the success and achievement of the cast of Romeo & Juliet.

SNOW TRIP

This was my first activity as the Outdoor Coordinator for Heartlands – and what a way to start a ski trip in Pila Italy with 19 students.

Firstly a huge well done for all the students who attended in February – this was a unique opportunity for students to learn a new physical skill, to participate in healthy exercise and, for many, to gain independence and confidence, pushing their own limits safely and successfully.

On day one, we were split into our respective abilities. This was a great opportunity for those who have skied before to refine what they had learned and for the beginners to learn the basics of how to turn and snow plough. By the end of day two all beginners had made exceptional progress with the help of Chee the ski instructor – a real inspiration to the students.

Meanwhile a bit further up the mountain the intermediate and advanced groups were tackling challenging blue slopes and progressing onto the occasional ‘cheeky’ red. As time progressed the slopes became steeper and trickier.

One of the many highlights was watching the intermediate group in unison snaking through the natural half pipe. Later the stakes were raised even higher with some interesting off piste runs for the more adventurous!

By the end of the week the groups started to cross paths more – the beginners, intermediates and advanced were on the same slopes, all skiing and all mastering the parallel turns and a few ‘carving’. This really does show how far the beginners had come – a real testament to their resilience and support of each other.

Interski put on amazing Apres Ski events in the evening such as eat all you can pizza, bowling, a quiz and a tour of Aosta to see the Roman ruins and pick up a souvenir.

In addition to the evening activities students completed a Ski Journal, which was an opportunity to reflect on the challenges of the day, and how they were overcome, think about the new skills they had learned and set goals for the following day. The journals made for interesting reading – what was apparent is the warmth and compassion students showed for

each other and how ambitious and excited they were to get back on the slopes.

There were many great quotes: ‘We progressed a lot today, travelling on the longest chairlift in the resort.

I am so proud we did this in only four days and extremely excited about tomorrow – my aim is to master the parallel turn tomorrow.’

Another quote was about nominating peers for a prize: ‘I nominate […] she was kind the whole time, supportive and patient but when she gets angry … Run!’ Parents were updated every evening with photos from the skiing adventures.

Next year’s ski trip has been provisionally booked in Feb 2019 at Courmayeur, a new resort. The hotel we will be staying in is 10 mins walk from the ski lift – perfect! We hope to make this the biggest and most successful ski trip yet.

Thank you to Ms Kenssous and Mr Gates for their support in making the trip run so smoothly and for making it fun for all those involved.

SEARCH DAY

On SEARCH Day, Year 7s had the opportunity to visit a couple of universities, for example: Cambridge, Oxford and UCL. We were enthusiastic about the clean facilities like the library, the garden and all the college dorms. The Cambridge visitors went to Murray Edwards College for Women where we had a tour guide to show us around the college. It was very clean and I was very impressed. The library was massive, and as I went by the books I saw they were in excellent condition.

We left the college a little bit smarter than when we entered. Mr Fari also took us to Pembroke College where he studied languages, such as Chinese, Portuguese, Spanish and French. We took a little walk in the town, where we went past the University of Cambridge – in my opinion the architecture of the buildings is well designed. On the way back to school, everyone was knackered because of all the walking we did. Tomas Kulicsek

ENGLISH HARRY POTTER a history of magic

Avid Heartlands Harry Potter fans heard the call far and wide and undertook the perilous and magical journey to the British Library to visit the exhibition – Harry Potter: A History of Magic!

The students were taken on an adventure into the magical world created by J K Rowling and how it links with real history in our Muggle world! We all left a little bit wiser and thoroughly sated; bound together by the bond of the love we hold for the best books in the world (according to us)!

DEBATE MATE Debate Mate is a unique, international educational charity dedicated to improving social mobility using cost-effective peer-to-peer debate mentoring.

We run after-school debating clubs, facilitated by students at the best universities, which give disadvantaged young people the skills they need to become exceptional young leaders – confidence, interpersonal communication skills and higher order thinking.

We have a strong global presence, operating programmes in Nepal, Africa, Jamaica, the Middle East, and the United States.

We also run bespoke workshops for teachers looking to integrate debating into their classrooms and specialised training for students who want to ‘debate like a world champion’.

By teaching debating through peerto-peer mentoring, we empower and inspire participants and provide them with powerful role models to raise their aspirations.

The Urban Debate League is a cumulative tournament which takes place over three rounds across the country, and concludes with a finalsday competition for the top eight schools in the league.

Miss Addison joins us temporarily as our new Science technician; she has been doing incredibly well and has really taken to the role.

We are now in the second year of the new and improved CSI SEARCH, where students have the opportunity to earn a CREST Discovery Award through planning, presenting and investigating.

Let us take this opportunity to reflect on what the CREST Award signifies and what it can do for our students.

The CREST Award scheme is the flagship programme for the British Science Association and focuses on young people.

The only nationally recognised accreditation scheme for STEM project work, this CREST Award gives students an incredible opportunity to achieve a recognised award!

salters’ institute Wednesday 16th May 2018 Mr Bimpiris is taking four students to the Salters’ Institute Festival of Chemistry. This event will: • excite students with the different chemistry practicals they will be carrying out throughout the day • allow students to carry out real investigations and experience the life of a real chemist • encourage team working and allow them to solve problems independently.

Freddy the goldfish!

The primary school outreach is commencing on 27th February.

These sessions will focus on Freddy the goldfish and how pollution is affecting local ponds in Haringey.

CLASSICS Introducing Classics This year at Heartlands we are introducing Classics, a brand new subject for GCSE and enrichment. Classics is a subject that often people already know a lot about but have never actually heard the name of, or can often not tell you what it is. Classics is, in essence, the history, literature and art of the Ancient Mediterranean and Eastern world.

This therefore covers the ancient worlds of Rome, Greece, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Turkey and many other surrounding areas. Classics touches on the areas of our past that History often doesn’t and goes beyond just the remit of just Britain.

For the past few terms, Club Classics has been exploring the breadths and depths of the ancient world looking at Roman and Greek gods, housing and families in the ancient world, ancient Near Eastern empires, gladiator fighting and sport in the ancient world – very relevant at the moment with the Winter Olympic Games recently concluding.

Below is an example of the great work completed by one of the members, Scott Lamas in Year 9.

classics term 2 Classics is rapidly expanding at Heartlands with GCSE options being chosen and Year 8 beginning to experience what Classics is like to study in school and through upcoming trips. A few Year 7 students got the chance to experience some real life Roman history in context when on the ski trip this year. Panagiot, Murat and Kerem got to explore an Ancient Roman theatre in the town of Aosta where they got to learn all about gladiator fighting, what it was like to watch games, and different theatre they could see. They loved it, and Murat even described it as one of his highlights.

The booster programme has undoubtedly contributed to improved results and increased students’ confidence and motivation. The purpose of the club is to provide additional preparation for the forthcoming AFA tests and GCSE exams. Students do their online homework here – our computers have all necessary software up to date.

Feedback about Booster Club is very positive – it is beneficial for attainment. The most recent assessment has confirmed that students who attend the club on a regular basis have made excellent progress in Maths, improved their grades and got promoted to higher sets.

BUSINESS clifford chance Clifford Chance LLP welcomed Year 10 students to visit its site in Canary Wharf in December. Students got the chance to speak to key staff about careers that take place within the firm and were given the chance to think about what skills and qualities employers like Clifford Chance were looking for. This allowed our Year 10 students to think about how they may apply these skills in school to help them secure jobs in this field later.

Bank of England – SEARCH Day

This past SEARCH Day, a Year 10 Business group managed to go to visit the Bank of England.

Here students were able to learn about the history of money, as well as the Bank of England’s role in dealing with interest rates and inflation. Students were even lucky enough to hold a brick of gold and to test the weight of the block. This trip allowed students to see the workings of the bank – including interest rates and inflation – which is part of their GCSE course and what they had being learning about around this time.

All students seemed to enjoy the day and it gave them the chance to put textbook theory into practice.

Future First Event- Year 9

Over the past few months the IAG team has been working hard to prepare our Year 11 students for life after Heartlands and what post-16 holds for them. During this time we have welcomed guest speakers from a wide range of institutions such as Highgate Wood, London Academy of Excellence, Hornsey Sixth Form, The Compton School and Harris Academy Tottenham. Most students have now conducted interviews with their respective potential placements and some students have received confirmed offers. Over the next few weeks we will be hosting some guest speakers to talk to our Year 11 cohort about apprenticeships. This will allow Year 11 the chance to find out some key information regarding this area that they may consider after Year 11.

search day: Hayward gallery

SEARCH Day is always a great opportunity for our students to do something that can enrich not only their experience of the Arts at Heartlands, but also give them a better understanding of the art world in general. With the hustle and bustle of everyday London life it’s easy to forget that there are exciting exhibitions, shows and events popping up all over the city, and that many of them are free!

We in the Art Department are firm believers that visiting galleries and creative spaces is key to children’s creative and personal development, especially for those students who are currently doing their GCSEs in Art and Photography.

With that in mind, for this term’s SEARCH Day we decided to whisk our Year 11 photographers off to the newly refurbished Hayward Gallery at the South Bank Centre, to see a retrospective of works by 16

the world renowned photographer Andreas Gursky, whose stunning large-scale work explores themes of contemporary life, mass production and technology. The students, whose theme for this year’s GCSE exam is ‘Fragments’, were encouraged to approach Gursky’s artwork critically, asking themselves what the work was about, how and why it was made, and what they could take from it as inspiration for their own exam projects.

After the exhibition the students got the chance to get creative, and make use of the digital SLR cameras

provided by the school to take photographs of some of the iconic buildings and scenes that can be found on the South Bank and along the river Thames. You can see some examples of their work included on this page.

Outings like this are crucial to students’ creative development – seeing artwork in the flesh helps them gain a better understanding of their subject, and the knowledge and dedication it takes to create truly outstanding art. With a subject like Photography it is especially important to allow the students to go off-site and take photographs independently of the classroom environment.

This allows them to begin to truly understand the scope of the medium.

With photography, the possibilities are endless, and we are extremely excited to see the incredible work that this Year 11 come up with for their exam projects.

As part of our Mechanical project, Year 10 spent SEARCH Day exploring the work of American artist Jim Dine.

Dine was best known for turning everyday utilitarian, household objects into extraordinary works of art.

To explore Jim Dine’s artistic process, we investigated ways of creating multiple artworks from one object. We took rubbings and prints of scissors and pliers; played with positive and negative space by creating stencils; painted with watercolour and Brusho; and ended the day designing and printing our own Poly blocks.

THE LIBRARY author visit: marcus alexander

Last term in the library, we had a visit from Marcus Alexander, the author of the best-selling fantasy Keeper of the Realms series. The books focus on the adventures of a young girl called Charlie Keeper, who finds a secret door to a magical land in her house. She must try and save Bellania from an evil threat as well as getting to the bottom of all the secrets her guardian Mr Crow has kept from her.

Marcus explained how his travels around the world and love of sport influenced his writing. For instance K’Changa, the fantasy sport Charlie plays, is inspired by three real world sports: Capoeira; Chinlone; and Takraw. The students were treated to videos of Marcus’s gymnastic abilities including him doing a full somersault.

On the last day of Autumn Term, several of our student librarians were invited to a talk at the Crouch End Picturehouse by Moira Young on her book The Road to Ever After, followed by a screening of It’s a Wonderful Life. Moira Young talked about what inspired her to become a writer, as well as how It’s a Wonderful Life influenced the plot of The Road to Ever After, and students had the opportunity to ask her questions about her work. There was also a great deal of excitement as several members of Moira’s writers’ group also attended the screening, including the popular children’s author Sophie Mackenzie, whose books are very popular in the library!

The Road to Ever After tells the story of Davy David, a 13 year-old orphan, who lives in the bushes in a town ruled by a strict minister, Reverend Fall. A talented artist, Davy loves to draw pictures of angels in the dirt, in SUCCESS MAGAZINE | SPRING 2018

the early hours of the morning before the townspeople are awake. He spends his days on his own, except for a small dog, who has attached himself to Davy, often going to the library to find inspiration for his pictures of angels. One day, after chasing after a ball for some of the town’s boys, he finds himself in the yard of the old boarded-up museum, now rumoured to be the home of a witch.

The witch is Miss Elizabeth Flint, an elderly woman who has a proposition for Davy: drive her to her childhood home, where, it turns out, she has made the decision to die. (Credit to Goodreads for the summary).

We’re very grateful for all that our student librarians do at Heartlands, both on the front desk and behind the scenes, and the library really couldn’t run as well without them, so thank you!

The Heartlands Community Trust really wants all its students to aspire and achieve to the top of their abilities. To further this ambition we have recently started fundraising for all those extracurricular activities that can make a huge difference to the student experience. We are putting together projects that cover Literacy, Sport, Drama, Art and Music but all subjects will be involved. We have already raised money for the continuation of the Haringey Children’s Book Awards and therapists for ASD, and are awaiting news upon funding for sports equipment and musical instruments. There are no real limits to what we can fundraise for and we always want to hear from teachers and students about any projects or ideas they have which we might be able to help with. We cannot promise a 100% success rate but we will always try to fulfil the school’s wishes and help the students have an enriching time here.

BEYOND WORDS Beyond Words is our whole school reading programme that creates responsible, resilient and reflective readers. Students have been reading books within their ZPD level and taking quizzes to check their understanding, and we have already seen some brilliant progress.

Average percentage correct: 85% Engaged time: 20 minutes per day

Since we began Beyond Words we have seen: • average reading age increase of 13 months over a nine month period • increase in library borrowing of over 100% • decrease in at-risk students of 63% • students reading for 16 minutes a day on average

First Story Heartlands High School works closely with First Story, which is a charity that changes lives through writing.

Our students have been working with writer Anthony Cartwright helping them find their voices by fostering confidence.

COMPUTING girls at google

This term in Computing we have been continuing our hard work on bridging the gender gap in the field of technology by exposing our Year 8 girls to the world of work in computing at Google. In January, 40 of our Year 8 girls got the chance to go to Google in Tottenham Court Road and meet the team for a day of computing. Google gave the girls the opportunity to explore the offices and see the amazing working lifestyle the company has to offer, as well as having tech talks and a comprehensive coding class. The girls were an excellent representation for the school and took so much away from the opportunity, with Iklas in 8O stating that she was definitely going to work there when she was older.

As it stands only 28% of computer science degrees are earned by females, and 75% of computer science based jobs go to males.

These statistics are shocking, but can be changed. Naimah in 8A asked the thought provoking question, ‘Why do you think women are so underrepresented in technology?’

The answer given was not simple, but many of the Googlers linked it to confidence and enjoyment of the subject at school level. One thing is for certain, computer science is a vital skill to learn at this age – even if tech is not your future goal.

In the afternoon, students got the opportunity to have a go at programming some mini spherical

robots to race around a set track.

Our girls were not unfamiliar with programming, having created their own gamebook programs a few weeks before. They rose to the challenge with some very impressive times being recorded. Myself, Mr Smith and Ms Hannah were incredibly proud of our group of girls, and I am excited to see many of them entering the world of STEM and computing.

TRIP TO THE EUROSCOLA, STRASBOURG 2017/2018

On 1st Feb, once again, a group of Year 10 students visited the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France.

The event was part of the EUROSCOLA Project, which offers an immersive experience in the Chamber of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

On that day students from the 28 EU Member States were selected to become Members of the European Parliament for one day and to learn about European integration by experiencing it first hand. Heartlands students represented the UK and they were the youngest of them all, as the rest of the students were already in High School.

In the morning students had an introduction to the European Union and all the different schools gave a speech to introduce their teams and countries. Zariel and Abi were our representing speakers, making all of us very proud with their words, especially as they only had a few minutes to prepare the speech.

They mentioned our strong ethos of SEARCH for SUCCESS and, as young SUCCESS MAGAZINE | SPRING 2018

British people, their belief in free societies and human rights for all.

In the afternoon students were divided into groups that met in committees to debate one of six topics that had been given and prepared in advance: 1. Environment and renewable energy 2. Security and human rights 3. 2018: European year of cultural heritage 4. Europe’s future 5. Migration and integration 6. Youth employment The debate was a wonderful experience for students, giving them a real taste of what it is to be a Member of the European Parliament. They had to vote and formulate questions in front of over 300 people. Heartlands students were not afraid of putting their hands up to ask questions or make comments. Even one of the youngest, Owen, was brave enough

After lunch and preparation the students were again invited to the Chamber of the European Parliament to be part of the Eurogame. Eurogame is a multiple-choice questionnaire for four teams made up of four participants from different countries.

The rest can also vote using the electronic voting system, which was fun and interesting to use.

This trip was a great experience for Heartlands students as well as a magnificent opportunity for them to be exposed to other languages and also to practise French at every opportunity. Ms Sainz-Rozas 27

GEOGRAPHY fieldwork

Year 10s visited Kew Gardens in Central London on 22nd February to look at ecosystems and biodiversity. They investigated how plants from different biomes have adapted to be able to survive in the conditions that surround them.

Year 11 Geography students have recently taken part in two days of field work. The first was back in November when 65 students attended the Epping Forest Field Study Centre. The students had to investigate how the Debden Brook changed along its course. Students also investigated if the changes they noted were in line with the textbook theory as outlined in the ‘Bradshaw Model’.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Recently, Year 11 geographers have also been to visit the Olympic Park to undertake environmental quality surveys and to interview members of the public on their thoughts about the regeneration of the Stratford area. From their investigations students have concluded that the area has been significantly improved.

Year 8 geographers took part in a field study in Alexandra Park. Alexandra Palace was built in 1873 and the students had to investigate whether the natural landscape reflected this date. They did this by working out the ages of the trees by measuring their circumference and using a formula to give an approximate age.

They found that the average age of the trees was estimated to be around the same age as Alexandra Palace. Therefore they came to the conclusion that the trees must have been planted around the same date.

Year 8 students transformed everyday household items such as newspapers and plastic bags and recycled them into various fashion items and charity wristbands.

They also created posters to encourage others to recycle their waste in school.

EAL My Beginning in London Anas Bel Moudden, Y7 First language: Spanish Also speaks: French Hi, my name is Anas, I’m 12, my parents are from Morocco and I was born in Spain. When I was 8 years old, I moved to another country (France). There, I learned French, and after three years I moved again, this time to England …

In the UK (London), I was so excited to start school. A day before the start, I was a little bit afraid because I thought I was going to be alone and no one was going to help me. However, my first day of school was really good, because the school has EAL (English as an Additional Language), which helps students who don’t speak English to learn the language and deal with any problem. They teach you in lessons and if they hadn’t helped me with my English, now I would not be able to speak it. EAL is still helping me.

Heartlands, and all the schools in London, are different from my other schools, because in Spain I didn’t wear uniform, and they don’t have rewards for the students who are doing well. But, in France, if you come late three times, they give you one hour detention, or if you have reminders in your planner, they give you two hours detention. They don’t wear uniform either, but the school used to be always strict anyway. The students were always polite and they didn’t argue with teachers and they were never disrespectful.

I think having an uniform here is good.

It decreases bullying and shows discipline. I like the system of rewards 30

that encourages students to learn and stop having bad behaviour.

Detentions help to show students the consequences of bad behaviour.

EAL buddies help new students with their problems or doubts, and they also help them make friends. The school also has a library, which forces students to read and they offer quizzes to do to make sure we understand them.

It is also really good that the school has after-school clubs to do your home learning or other topics, which encourages students to be interested in different subjects.

EAL SEARCH Day SEARCH Day showed Ms García how competitive and resilient her students are! Roza, Selinay, Hristo, Fikri, Gaby and Geanina kept pushing themselves until they all got a Quizlet reward.

My Beginning in the uk Andrea Gomez, Y10 First language: Spanish I have to admit the first day was hard.

I felt these butterflies in my stomach.

The feeling of someone who changes countries, and leaves their friends and their school behind, for a different way of life. I remember the way everyone looked at me. I remember imagining how they would be my teachers and friends.

The experience has been good so far: I have made new friends, and EAL has helped me a lot and continues to do so.

I have a lot to learn and a lot of time to settle down, but little by little, my English is improving.

To Spanish people, I have to say that this is a very big change. The school is different, the lessons are different and even people are different. I mean, we have to adapt to a different culture.

But it’s a good change, and you’ll be received with open arms.

The latest AFA reports were littered with stories of outstanding progress both at KS3 and KS4, which further highlights the relentless ambition of our students, who are working so hard to make a success of themselves across the house.

A good measure of how well the house is doing lies in our achievement sections during assembly where we’re able to analyse our successes from the previous week. Currently we are well out in front in the merit race with thousands of moments of academic and character focused brilliance. I am currently dusting off my shelf ready to receive the merit trophy at the end of this academic year!

The countdown has begun for our Year 11 students, who are now busying themselves ready to take on their GCSE exams. I wish them all the very best with their revision and for successful applications to colleges and sixth forms.

This is a fantastic achievement and one which is closely linked to attainment. At Heartlands our stats show that over 80% of the students who achieved 5 A*–C (Grades 9–4) in English and Maths had over 96% attendance. termly overview As we come to the end of the Spring Term, it has been hugely rewarding to see so much evidence for how students in Pegasus have continued to determinedly exemplify our SEARCH for SUCCESS ethos. I thought it would be nice to share with you some of our shared successes.

TOP MERITS

While Pegasus had slipped recently into second place in the merit race for the first time this year, the effort students have demonstrated in lessons and around school has allowed them to earn some really huge figures for merits. To date four students have earned over 1,000 merits, 11 have over 900, 18 have over 800, 35 have over 700 and a whopping 80 students, about 40% of the house, have earned at least 600 merits, which is an average of about 200 per half term. With such a large number of students with such impressive achievements I am confident that Pegasus will find itself once again in first place.

star students Looking at our demerits, I was really pleased by the huge portion of Pegasus who consistently get it right. We still have 14 students with absolutely no demerits, 33 with less than five and a fantastic 61 or 30% with less than ten demerits since the start of the year.

This means that about a third of the house are always punctual, smartly dressed, completing all home learning, sensible in the corridors, participating in lessons maturely and making the most of their learning opportunities. These individuals must absolutely be recognised for this exemplary achievement and the responsibility they demonstrate.

I would like to highlight that while we did not win the Spelling Bee and Chess competitions, we are still in first place with a total of 125 points for the Interhouse competition.

However, unlike before, we are now being very closely followed by both Cygnus and Lacerta with 123 and 122 respectively. This does mean that we need a strong team to represent us in both the Interhouse Scrabble and Public Debate competitions that are coming up.

I look forward to seeing how these go and, more generally, I look forward to seeing how all these figures I mention change.

Firstly, it is great to report that Pegasus has 31 students who are still members of the 100% Club. This means that these 31 students have been in school every day since September without fail – what an impressive achievement! In addition to this, it is also impressive to see that 71 students, a third of the house, have managed to maintain their attendance above the absolute minimum target of 98% that I set at the start of the year. Here, we can see some really clear exemplification of what School Matters means.

termly overview Scorpiuz has had a positive term and has shown some real progress in lots of areas including behaviour, attendance and academic achievement.

We have seen the attendance of individuals improve remarkably over this term, which in turn has had a positive impact on their focus, achievements and learning. Scorpiuz students will know that attendance and our school target is a regular focus in our weekly house assemblies and I’m very proud to see the students working so hard to achieve this.

During VT time students have worked exceptionally hard on our Beyond Words programme. I have had great pleasure in visiting tutor groups where it has been inspiring to see so many students engaged in the programme and having meaningful discussions around reading and their progress. There are some exciting plans ahead for Beyond Words and I look forward to hearing your thoughts on it.

Our tutor representatives have continued to represent our house through their outstanding leadership and confidence in tutor times, bringing some valuable ideas and solutions to problems they have raised. Students should get their voices heard through their tutor representatives and tutors.

UPCOMING COMPETITIONS

The re-launch of Interhouse competitions this year has continued to grow. Students from all years have taken part in a variety of competitions run by lots of different departments. There have been smaller scale events such as Interhouse Chess and Interhouse Egg Drop. Then there have been intensely competitive and dramatic events like Interhouse Escape Room. Finally, there have been set piece events, which include an audience and tutors taking part, such as Interhouse University Challenge and Interhouse Spelling Bee. Interhouse is designed to provide new experiences for students, where they challenge themselves and create lasting memories. In terms of the latest scores, it’s very close at the top, with Pegasus, Cygnus and Lacerta in the top three spots, and Aquila and Scorpiuz lagging behind!

Last term we ran our first ever Interhouse Escape Room! Students had 30 minutes to find the Golden Ticket to escape their classroom by solving problems and deciphering clues. Impressively, all teams managed to escape the room in time (just!). Huge congratulations to Pegasus for coming first with an outstanding escape time!'

FOREST SCHOOL COMMUNICATION

PHYSICAL & SENSORY

The sensory experiences provided by Forest School helps prompt language development. Improving communication skills has a positive effect on a child’s self-esteem and is a crucial part of their development. The students are learning new words that they are remembering week by week. Class Mars learned a new knot called the ‘Clove Hitch’; the students are able to recall the name and even remember the special name for it – ‘fish in a dish’.

One of the most important attributes of a Forest School is that learning is play based, child initiated and child led as far as possible. Play is freely chosen, personally directed and intrinsically motivated, boosting the young person’s independence.

At Forest School students are physically active a lot of the time and their stamina improves as they go through their Forest School sessions. Their experiences also help lead to the development of healthier lifestyles, as the students ask their parents to take them on trips to woodlands and to the park outside of school times.

Students independently work on activities without staff support and show a great interest in the tasks. Class Mars students worked on finding ‘minibeasts’ under the logs and in the soil. The students even found the courage to hold the minibeasts with their bare hands. We focused on where we would find certain beasts and how we can keep them safe.

Students made a five star bug hotel and named it Hotel Le Grand. Madison made a fancy bathroom with a hot tub filled with beautiful daisies; Daniel made it environmentally friendly by using foil to make solar power so the guests can stay warm; and Usman found some guests, such as the worms, and some more materials to help build the hotel.

Forest School is educational whilst also allowing children to play, explore and discover. The students seem happier (even if it is freezing outside) the fresh air. They enjoy the excitement, getting mucky – it doesn’t get child friendlier than that.

CURRICULUM Forest School helps children to grow in confidence as a result of the freedom, time and space they are given in their learning.

This allows them to demonstrate independence at each individual child’s rate. Their interest grows as they want to learn more.

Our topic was Bright Sparks.

The students did activities based on fireworks and looked at electricity. The students even had a go with a sparkler following all the safety rules.

The only problem was that it wasn’t dark enough to see the sparks!

NEPTUNE FOOD TECH In Food Tech we have been exploring different flavours and have looked at food that can be eaten raw and food we need to cook. We also practised cutting fruits into small and bigger chunks. We tasted our food and identified flavours.

We made sure to place our fingers in a safe position so that we do not hurt ourselves.

MATHS

We also talked about having different taste to others, e.g.

Noah loves orange flavour whereas Shedania loves apples.

We are really enjoying our topic Bright Sparks in Neptune class. We have been learning about Guy Fawkes and how he relates to bonfire night.

We have designed and made pictures of fireworks, using 2D shapes. We also made firework cookies: they did taste really nice.

We used clear instructions on how to make a fruit salad and followed all the steps.

JUPITER INDEPENDENCE SOCIAL COMMUNICATION

At Jupiter, we have had conversations on a series of topics. Conversations are very important learning moments, as the students take the lead, and reflect on and share their opinions! We talked about human rights, emotions, and what to do if a friend shares a secret with us. The students have reflected on a series of articles from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and shared their opinion on the death penalty. They have been able to name their emotions, and to acknowledge that sometimes we hide our emotions, not to disappoint others!

At Jupiter, we go to the supermarket once a week to buy the ingredients for cooking. Jupiter students are very good at spotting value items, and at administering their money. The students have also independently organised a trip to the Science Museum – researching how to get there, how much the ticket costs, affordable lunch solutions, and what else is worth visiting in the Kensington area. The next trip they will organise will be to the Globe Theatre – in line with their English curriculum.

CURRICULUM At Jupiter, we have improved our Maths skills, learning about negative numbers and decimal numbers. For English, we have worked on describing a character and a setting.

The students have also learned about synonyms and antonyms. They have rewritten a description of themselves using antonyms: in this way, they created the opposite version of themselves! We will also work on The Tempest by Shakespeare, as part of the English curriculum. In PSHE, we have reflected on emotions, and have written a list of negative and positive emotions.

We have shared how we experience and communicate emotions, and who we talk with when we have a problem.

PHYSICAL & SENSORY Jupiter’s students take a dance and a gymnastics and stretching lesson once a week. They enjoy dancing to the rhythm, and choosing the songs. They also enjoy participating in football, Dance Club, and Art Club during their break time. They love cooking; the sensory experience of preparing a meal, combined with being proud of how good the meal tastes, is very rewarding!

SATURN SEARCH DAY 3 On SEARCH Day 3, our students in the ASD provision celebrated the Chinese New Year with the Year of the Dog. Students in Saturn class have created a poster which they decorated with colourful paper dragons and traditional Chinese patterns and motifs.

Students tasted traditional cuisine without forgetting to use chopsticks, of course!

PHYSICAL & SENSORY INTEGRATION

CURRICULUM

In our learning time we are looking for opportunities in our busy schedules to have more physical and sensory experiences. So far, we are enjoying movement breaks in between lessons by doing physical activities such as running and jogging on the spot, jumping, spinning and dancing.

We finish with a peaceful and calming cool down accompanied by relaxing and healing music.

Last half term our Maths topic was money. Students have learned that we use money for shopping. We have been using coins; all learners in Saturn class have enjoyed counting coins using the Numicon resources for support.

During our phonics lessons, students have learned how to sign and make ‘a, s, t and p sounds’ (Jolly Phonics set 1).

In Literacy, our topic was Land Ahoy! Students have explored what a pirate looks like, and have had lots of fun dressing up in pirate costumes, reading a treasure map and finding their rewards and making sensory activities with sand, water, pebbles and chocolate coins – what an adventure!

VENUS SPRING SUCCESS

Venus class has learned about relationship and the importance of maintaining a wide range of relationships.

Students have been able to identify the difference between relationships with family, neighbours and community workers they know, e.g. teachers, doctors, nurses, escorts on the school bus; and relationships with community workers they do not know, e.g. corner shop keepers, bus drivers, etc.

To gain a better understanding of different types of relationship, Venus class has participated in simulated

scenarios, class discussion and a range of other lesson activities to show understanding of taught topics.

Venus class also enjoyed going to Sky Academy Studio.

Students enjoyed making their very own TV report on current affairs. Their report focussed on the dumping of plastic in the ocean.

Venus class very much enjoyed the behind the scenes tour of Sky Studios and the hands-on learning experience of creating their own TV report.

MARS ENGLISH & DRAMA

The students of Mars class have worked diligently this year creating a play that they titled The Martian Odyssey. The students worked individually on creating imaginary characters and using colourful adjectives to describe them. As the students are huge fans of popular films such as Frozen and Star Wars, they borrowed some traits from popular movies to help create a storyboard. The story revolves around a band of pirates including a muppet who was banished from the kingdom, who teams up with a Sonic character to defeat a Sith Lord named Darth Chelsea and save an Ice Queen and her kingdom.

Every student has been active in helping to create the script for the play with minimal support from staff. The students are excited to be able to perform their play for their fellow peers.

MATHS This term, the students have been mastering measurement.

The students are learning how to accurately measure amounts of ingredients in cooking and have enjoyed eating the treats afterwards. The students are also learning about money and how to pay for items. Students have enjoyed their weekly trips to Morrisons where they have paid for the groceries and collected the change. The students have also enjoyed being part of the community visiting local cafés to purchase a treat, which has supported their learning regarding affordability and purchasing within a set budget.

STAYING HEALTHY Since the beginning of the academic year, the students of Mars class have learned about keeping fit and eating healthily.

During tuck time and lunch, the students are encouraged to think about healthy options.

Every day begins with an Active 5 where students participate in a variety of PE workouts, including the Step-Up Challenge that has the students going up and down staircases five times, to get their mind and body ready for the day’s lessons. For PE, students have been working on gross motor skills. Students have been practising dribbling the ball, passing the ball to a teammate, and maintaining control of the ball. This term, students have also explored the local neighbourhood by doing PE outside in the park. The students also enjoyed playing at the park afterwards.

TOPIC For the topic Bright Sparks, the students learned about electricity and currents through scientific inquiry. They learned that wires help move electrical power from one source to another. The students had a blast creating an electrical circuit with the help of some lemons.

For this term’s topic, Land Ahoy, the students have focused on a pirate theme. In addition to writing The Martian Odyssey, the students also built swords and created an island paradise.

Students also learned about coordinates and created their own treasure map using coordinates for their peers.

TRIPS

Mars students have gone on a number of class trips this academic year. Winter Wonderland and Parliament were highlights so far. This term, the class visited Sky Academy Studios. At Sky Studios, students learned about the massive issues that single-use plastic containers are having on our oceans. The students worked collaboratively with other classes in the provision to create a breaking news broadcast masterpiece.
