FIVE-YEAR SANDBAG PLAN By Margaret Dekker
Owner of Beach Byron Bay, Ben Kirkland, welcomes the 5-year sandbag plan
Coastal erosion has encroached on the landmark Byron Bay café
A COMMUNITY meeting held by Crown Lands over the coastal erosion emergency at Clarkes Beach, has supported a bid to keep sandbags in use at the troubled site for at least five years to mitigate erosion risks. The one-hour online meeting held last Friday took feedback from the community as NSW Crown Lands prepares a Development Application and Environmental Impact Statement for Byron Shire Council for final determination by the Northern Regional Planning Panel for ongoing sandbags. A 90-day permit placed last November for 650 temporary sandbags in an 80m x 7m wall is now expired. Dune rebuilding works using imported sand was also done at the time. For Ben Kirkland, owner of Beach Byron Bay café which sits precariously on Clarkes Beach dunes, the formal move to extend sandbag use for five years is a relief, particularly in the wake of last week’s threatening full moon tides and solid easterly swells, is encouraging, “Five years is better than the 90-days we started out with and the two-year permit we’ve been talking about for probably the last year... it’s not perfect by any sense but at least for the next five years we know we can trade,” Mr Kirkland told The Northern Rivers Times.
