DEVASTATING DIAGNOSIS FOR LIAM
By Tonia Dynan NURSE Hiep Maher’s laughter delights her coworkers and patients alike when she’s working the wards at Lismore Base Hospital.
But suddenly, the caring nurse’s joy has been overshadowed after her sweet little two-year-old boy was recently diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia. On Mother’s Day, Hiep and
her husband Steve noticed Liam was struggling to walk and move, so they rushed him to emergency. “They looked at him and sent him straight up to the Queensland Children’s
Hospital in Brisbane,” family friend Shaen Springall said. “Hiep raced home and packed a bag and off they went to Brisbane, and she’s been there ever since. “They’re staying in accommodation near the hospital, but they’re unable to work. Liam is receiving intensive chemo which is going to continue for the next six months. “Liam’s going pretty well. He’s lost weight with treatment. They’re bribing him with a bit of chocolate and stuff he enjoys, but he’s like a really happy little fellow, always smiling and laughing.” Liam was born with down syndrome. “They tried for years and years to have a baby and then they got pregnant, and he was down syndrome, but they are just the most dedicated parents,” Shaen said. “Hiep’s one of the best nurses I know. When you’re on with her, you can hear her laughing. Lots of patients say she’s the best.” Shaen has started a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to help the family through this difficult time. In six days, the campaign raised $9420.
Hiep expressed her gratitude to all involved. “To all our amazing friends and family members, and to some of you that I haven’t even come across. It has been such a devastating situation and unexpected diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia for my two-year-old son Liam,” she wrote. “Steve and I have been blown away to receive the enormous support, both emotionally and financially, from our wonderful friends and family members. It is such a strong community and a united workplace at LBH. “No words can describe enough how much appreciation we feel to you all. From the bottom of our hearts, we want to say ‘Thank you’ to each of you individually. “Also, we would like you to know that your kindness and generosity will never be forgotten. I don’t know what I have done to deserve so much love and support from you all. “But with all your help, it does take away a load of worries from our shoulders and allows us to just focus on Liam’s health and to help him get better soon.” You can donate at https:// gofund.me/38370423
