Heartland LIVING tries to expand your knowledge about the community that we love and to spark your interest about topics that are old, new, and innovative. Our hope is that our stories inspire you to travel to a new destination, try a new recipe, learn about the rich antiquity of a historical landmark, or learn about people making your community a better place to live. Desoto County is celebrating a milestone for the All-Florida Championship Rodeo with the ground-breaking of the new Mosaic Arena. The upcoming March rodeo will be the last rodeo held at the current facility, which is bittersweet for this community. It’s been neat to see the history through the progression of photos as well as hear about all the local support given to bring new opportunities to Arcadia and the rodeo community. We’re always proud to recognize people making a difference in the Heartland so we are especially honored to recognize the 2017 Florida Teacher of the Year, Jessica Solano. The Polk County resident is taking stake in the lives of our children along with raising 2 young children Rayni and Oliver with her husband Gary. “What a neat person, and she's a wonderful teacher. I'm excited to see what she'll do this next year,” Governor Scott commented after the award ceremony. “Thank goodness for our 190,000 teachers around our state...I'm very thankful for all of them and very proud of all of them.” Sponsored by the Florida Department of Education and Macy's since 1988, the Teacher of the Year program recognizes exceptional educators throughout Florida. Winners are chosen not only for their extraordinary ability to teach and professional development but also for outstanding service to their school and community. On May 4, 2016, Solano was chosen from 72 teachers representing school systems across the state to be one of five finalist in this year's statewide competition, but it wasn't until the July 14th Macy's/Florida Department of Education Gala she knew she had won. “To have this be not only for Polk County, which was such an incredible honor, but to now be for Florida, it seems so surreal,” the 30-year-old said. “This is such an honor and a blessing.”

Solano was presented a $20,000 check from funds provided by the Florida Department of Education and Macy's. She also received a $1,000 wardrobe and a $1,000 check for Highlands Grove Elementary. The other four statewide finalist, Amy Miller representing Kissimmee Elementary, Precious Symonette from Miami Norland Senior High, Laurie Zentz of Switzerland Point Middle School, and Donald Blake at Marchman Technical School, were awarded $15,000 each, $500 Macy's gift cards, and $1,000 checks for their schools. A teacher for eight years, Solano attended Southeastern University in Lakeland and is currently working on her Masters in Education from Florida Southern College. She has served the past three years as a math instructor and school technology coach at Highlands Grove Elementary in Polk County. As a technology coach, she and her team train other educators how to “enhance classroom instruction through technology integration.” And through techniques like student-led lessons, Jessica teaches her classes to use critical thinking and take ownership of their learning. Throughout this school year, Solano is serving as the “Christa McAuliffe Ambassador of Education,” a position named in honor of the teacher-astronaut who died during the 1986 Challenger space shuttle explosion. Solano's duties include attending education events, teacher's summits, and speaking at school programs. She offers four different presentations or keynote motivational speeches, and requests to the Florida Department of Education for her appearances have been numerous. During just two weeks in January she was booked for ten events.

While her schedule can be exceptionally busy, she is grateful for the support of her husband, Gary, and her in-laws, who help while she's on the road with the care of her two children, six-year-old daughter, Rayni and five-month-old son, Oliver. Solano acknowledged, “It is a village effort.” “We are very proud of Jessie,” said Highlands Grove Principal Benjamin Henry, who has worked with Solano for the past three years. “Every time we get a chance to sit down and talk I like to pick her brains to see what she's learning from her travels across the state.” He added his appreciation for the time she is spending this year in Polk County mentoring first-year instructors like Samantha Sokolski, who is teaching Solano's two math classes during her absence. Henry added with pride, “This is the second Teacher of the Year for the state that we have had from Highlands Grove (referring to Florida Teacher of the Year 2015, Art Educator Christie Bassett). When we nominate someone, we have established this is the best person to represent Highlands Grove and what we are striving to be.”

Solano exemplifies all that is good in an educator. This popular teacher believes in creating a safe, trusting classroom environment where children know it’s alright to make mistakes and learn from them. She instills in her students the same “never give up” attitude she learned from her own parents while growing up along the gulf coast of Florida in a loving household that was often opened to foster children. “It has been so deeply ingrained into me to try to reach students, especially ones you don't know what is going on at home. They all need to have those high expectations and someone to believe in them, someone to tell them they can be successful no matter what. Education needs to be valued, teachers need to be valued,” Solano said of the in-classroom and at-home support from parents and the community that are so vital for a child's success. “I love doing what I do. I have a passion for always wanting to be better, for being an expert at what I

do,” said Solano, who engages her students in real life problem-solving tasks to show them how useful math is in life, in college, and in their careers. “Everyone is a 'math person.' Being Florida Teacher of the Year isn't all work; the title has its perks as well. This past November Solano was able to cross “Attend the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade” off of her bucket list after Macy's invited her and her family to New York for five days, providing them with airfare, VIP tickets for the parade, $500 in spending money, and accommodations at the Marriott Marquis. Solano stated, “I am so grateful for the many memorable experiences that being the 2017 Florida Teacher of the Year has afforded me, and I wish that every educator could know this feeling because they truly deserve it.”

CountryFlo Music Festival Anounces 2017 Dates November 10-12, 2017
housands of Country music fans descended upon south central Florida in November for the inaugural CountryFlo Music Festival. Of the over 8,000 fans in attendance, participants from 24 different states represented not only the deep South but as far as California and New York. Fans were treated to an unforgettable weekend in Lake Wales, Florida that included performances from country heavyweights Chris Stapleton, Thomas Rhett, Trace Adkins, Gary Allan and Randy Houser as well as the hottest rising acts like Margo Price & Chris Janson and more. Special moments included paratroopers dropping in with an American Flag and Jana Kramer surprising fans with an appearance from her Dancing With the Stars partner, Glen Savchenko. The newly renovated Triple Canopy Ranch served as the stunning backdrop for this unprecedented festival experience. After a multi-million dollar renovation, the beautifully aesthetic grounds boosts nearly 500 stunning acres of custom festival grounds that include tiki huts, volleyball, white sands beaches, palm trees and a lake; making this truly a unique property. ith 30 years in agricultural farming and science, Chuck Obern, President of C&B Farms, Clewiston, Florida, and his son, Charles, Jr., or “Boots,” have earned a widespread reputation across the U.S. for consistent quality and management as growers of organic and conventional agricultural specialty produce. With the increase in consumer demand for organics, Obern says, “It has been a long time coming but we now harvest more than fifty types of organic and conventional vegetables including basil, thyme, eggplant, watermelons, and more.” Obern’s interest in agriculture was spurred after his college days at American University, Washington D. C. “I realized I couldn’t stand academics, so I quit and got a ‘no frills’ minimum wage job at a local nursery.” It was a turning point in Obern’s career. Driven by personal ambition and nurtured by his father’s encouragement to go beyond academic success, young Obern forged his own path.

As Obern learned about plants and how to keep them healthy, he became a valued nursery employee. The company decided to support his enthusiasm and offered him the use of the company’s greenhouse to cultivate plants; Obern enthusiastically seized the opportunity. After a year of hard work, he was well anointed in horticulture but realized he needed more scientific research to forge ahead. Dr. Mason Marvel, who knew the Obern family when they lived in the exotic trappings of Kuala Lumpar, recommended that Oberon enroll, full-time, in the agricultural program at University of Florida. Working his way through, he had the opportunity to assist professors with their scientific research freeing him to explore and learn more about the complex world of plants. Obern’s academic success, this time around, was fueled by heightened interest and he made the President’s straight “A” list of outstanding students at UF. Now, it was time to turn another page in his career.

With only three credits to go before graduation, Obern was hired by a grower in LaBelle and earned his last credits working in the field. Obern said, “It wasn’t the ‘sheepskin’ that mattered to him but the gratification of incorporating academics into practical applications.” He created innovative agricultural practices that involved improving quality of fruits/vegetables, creating new variations, and streamlining production. Then, in 1986, another opportunity arose as Obern was offered a share in a piece of land to part-time farm vegetables. This was the birth of C&B Farms. Starting from scratch in this new commercial venture, Obern initiated a nutrition and disease prevention plan. “Plants produce their own natural pesticides which today are synthetically modified, applied in the field to control infestations of insects and disease and stimulate the plant’s immunity system which results in more efficient utilization of nutrients increasing production of food/fiber yields essential for economic success.” Mike Counts, C&B Sales Manager who has worked 20 years at various organic and conventional agriculture companies says, “When I came to work at C&B, we launched an expansive marketing plan to grocery stories/commercial markets, integrating applied academic practices with established procedures and experimental applications to increase production and income.”

“We run a tight production schedule,” says Counts. “Nothing grows year round, so we start planting in August and harvest October through June, the growing season may last 30 to 120 days depending on the crop grown. When our produce is harvested, it is shipped within 24 hours with a ceiling of 36 hours to arrive at its destination. In the meantime, we continue to mulch and weed. There is no down time in the agricultural business. Presently, we grow more than fifty types of conventional and organic vegetables on 2,500 acres with $18 million dollars in sales.” Driving through the Farm, the symmetrical rows of lush collards, corn, cucumbers, squash cabbage, beets, eggplant, cucumbers, bell peppers, organic marjoram, mint, cilantro, parsley, rosemary and many more are planted. “We use plastic sheets to hold in the water on some of our raised beds,” says Obern. “Quality is emphasized in every phase of our production and all of our produce is sold before it is planted.” Obern (father and son) personally oversee the entire operation along with a trusted team of employees who know their job, company requirements and state/federal regulations. “Every week, Counts, Tommy Armata, also in sales, and I hold a meeting with team leaders to assess quality and growing procedures, pesticide application, fertilization, harvesting, soil regeneration and the time table for planting. We do on-site composting, shipping in horse manure from a large Boca Raton Racetrack to amend the soil and stabilize continuous enrichment inducing growth of the crops.” Obern adds that “horse manure has no pesticide residue and after composting, no pathogens.” In today’s commodity market, agriculture is based on “economy of scale.” High-end customers who purchase organic fruits and vegetables look for the USDA “Certified Organic” label at the grocery store. for growing fruits and vegetables. “There must be no pesticides, chemical fertilizers or dyes used and the produce must not be processed using industrial solvents: biological control of insects is acceptable,” explains Obern. According to the USDA, the goal of organic farming is to integrate culture, biological, and mechanical practices into food production that fosters cycling resources, promotes ecological balance, and conserves biodiversity. Obern adds that “organic, however, is a perception, as some herbicides were originally discovered from plants and some soil micro-organisms. The public is not informed about what is organic and not organic, as organics are not pesticide free. Neem oil is naturally derived from a seed as the tree has a natural chemical defense that is toxic and repels insects. However, some naturally produced toxins cannot be used in organics. For example, nicotine is natural but it is toxic if consumed by humans and cannot be used on edible crops. Government regulations determine what is considered to be organic or conventional.” What is important in growing organics? Obern says it “has to do with how we ‘feed’ our plants. We use natural fertilizer, such as chicken feathers, meal, and natural potassium sulfate such as potassium from the sea. We also use compost on the organic crops for soil amendment. A third party, accredited by the USDA for quality assurance and certification, reviews Farmers/packers products. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets maximum tolerant safety levels for every pesticide, both organic and conventional.” Another agricultural concern in the U.S. is the threat of competition from cheaper and less quality imported produce. “In America, we are financially liable for safe food production. We should require all foreign agricultural importers to hold money as a security bond if their product is determined to be harmful so the American consumer is protected; however, that is considered to be an impediment to trade by some. In

Florida, we need better vigilance over imported produce as we import fifty percent of our produce from Mexico and other countries. Even though it is monitored by the USDA, some of the illegal drugs are packed and shipped in produce,” says Obern. Since C&B is proud of their locally grown produce, bringing it to market is more costly. “The wholesale and retail price is affected by higher transportation and carbon miles; but people want a ‘fresh taste.’ Competition from foreign markets results in a 30-50% disparity in price between U.S. grown and cheaper imported produce. Forty percent of our cost is for labor, which is a big difference, compared to the cost of foreign labor. It is difficult to match imported food prices as they don’t have the same growing restrictions or labor charges. In the United States, the price of wholesale vegetables generally decreases at the end of the month due to the biggest payer, the U.S. Government, for entitlement programs at the beginning of the month.” “In commercial agriculture in the U.S., it is an economic challenge every year and each year is different,” states Obern, however, he emphatically adds, “It our dedication, as commercial growers, to produce quality crops to preserve future generations.”

The Smithsonian Museum Waterways exhibit graced the halls of the Historic Okeechobee County Courthouse in Okeechobee, FL from December 17, 2016 -January 28, 2017. This wonderful opportunity began with a local visit from a representative, Alex Buell of the Florida Humanities Council who said he was scouting for a Smithsonian Museum on Main Street exhibit that was all about water. „

O ke e c h o b e e C o u n t y To u r i s t Development Council (TDC) applied to host the event and was awarded the exhibit along with a State Grant from the Florida Humanities Council. The request was to encourage the community to come together in a cooperative effort to not only celebrate the local waterways but to educate the community on the importance of water in their lives. The Smithsonian Museum Waterways exhibit featured poster panels and interactive touch screens, all which explores the close connection between humankind and access to clean, fresh water. There’s no place better to explore that connection than with Lake Okeechobee. The word Okeechobee comes from the Seminole Indian language "Oki" (water) and "Chubi" (big) and means "big water." Lake Okeechobee supplies water for millions of people and acres of agricultural lands. The lake also provides habitat for many species of game, birds and fish. It also connects the Kissimmee River ecosystem with the vast marshes and woodlands of Everglades National Park, including the estuary of Florida Bay. Considering Lake Okeechobee is the centerpiece of a vast watershed running from Orlando to Florida Bay and connected to both coasts, it is only fitting that this great lake and the community of Okeechobee was selected by the Smithsonian. „

Coordinated through the Florida Humanities Council, Okeechobee County TDC joined in partnership with Okeechobee Main Street and the local Heartland Library Cooperative to develop a program that made this exhibit one to remember. Bridgette Waldau, Okeechobee Main Street Arts and Culture Director, was able to connect with the well-known and respected water conservationist Dr. Guy Harvey. Working with the Guy Harvey team, Waldau arranged for an art exhibit to be included along side the Smithsonian interactive display. The art exhibit was a series of Guy Harvey’s salt and freshwater originals and giclees. Dr. Harvey’s works included paintings of blue marlin, snook, redfish, largemouth bass, manatees and other aquatic creatures, all decorating the walls surrounding Smithsonian display.

Okeechobee County Public Library, who is a part of the Heartland Library Cooperative, presented a smaller exhibit of model steamships used to tell the story of waterways throughout Florida. On loan from the Florida Wildlife Commission was a 50-gallon aquarium with living examples of some of the fish that are found in the local waterways.There were also items and pictures on loan from the Okeechobee Historical Society as well as private citizens that represent Okeechobee's historical connection to the local waterways. An opening reception for the Smithsonian Museum Waterways exhibit was held opening night, December 17, 2016. The reception was well attended and hosted by Okeechobee Main Street.

This March marks the 89th Annual Arcadia All-Florida Championship Rodeo, and it's set to be a historical event, not simply for the participants from all over the country but for the community of DeSoto County. „

The Arcadia Rodeo began with a humble start, a fundraiser for the American Legion in 1928. The American Legion chapter in Arcadia, an organization focused on serving veterans and the community needed to raise funds for a new building. The event was an overwhelming success with the help and participation of then Governor of Florida, Doyle E. Carlton, the Lion’s Club, Shriners, the Wauchula band, and even a group of Seminole Native Americans. That initial rodeo raised enough funds that the American Legion was able to pay off their new building in only four years. Since then, the community has rallied around the event and passionately fought to keep this great tradition alive for future generations. The Arcadia Rodeo has continued through wars, financial depressions,

and difficult times, but it has moved locations from the Limestone Community of Desoto County to the Welles Arena, then to its current location at the Arcadia All-Florida Championship Arena on Heard Street. Now, thanks to a $3 million grant from The Mosaic Company Foundation and numerous donors providing millions more, a new arena is being constructed this year. While it is a bittersweet change, the current location has passed the point of financially effective repairs, and the rodeo community has pulled together to make the dream of a new facility a reality. Groundbreaking occurred January 6th with the arena projected Heartland LIVING February March 2017

to be completed this Fall. The new Mosaic Arena, neighboring the Turner Agri-Civic Center, will have 7,796 seats, VIP areas, two 20 stall barns, additional parking, the Pat and Leona Hansel Media Center, and the 2,000 square foot William “Kayo” G. Welles Florida Cowboy Museum. “Every inch of this facility has been meticulously planned to not only improve upon an already successful rodeo but be a five-star facility our grand kids can enjoy with pride.” Rancher Sandra Welles, whose late husband's name will g race the Florida Cowboy Museum, grew up in Arcadia and knows the community and family pride that has surrounded this tradition. Kayo Welles' grandfather, Ed, helped promote and financed the rodeo from 1938 until he passed away in 1950. When asked how she felt about the honor bestowed on her husband of 56 years, Welles said, “I'm extremely proud. Though, knowing him, he probably would not want the recognition.

Still an advocate for the rodeo, a fundraiser, and a donor to the building fund, Sandra Welles said she would “absolutely” be at the arena's opening this Fall. “This is going to be a good thing for the community. There are so many people that have worked long and hard to make this come about,” Debbie Carlton said of the new facility. Carlton's father, Pat Hansel was a stock contractor, producer, and announcer at the Arcadia Rodeo for 25 years, from the late 1950s until his retirement in 1981. She and her husband, Doyle, have made a donation to be used for the new announcer's booth/ media center, which will be named in perpetuity in honor of both of her parents, Pat and Leona Hansel. Leona Hansel was the daughter of Zeb Parker, one of the rodeo's founding fathers. “I am just thrilled we are able to do this in their names. I think dad would be so well pleased,”

here’s nothing quite like the taste of a garden-fresh vegetable, their crisp flavor and vibrant textures are like none other. The taste is almost as good as the feeling of knowing that they came from your garden. With Spring right around the corner, now is the time that you need to start planting warm-season crops. Warmseason vegetables usually produce a harvest throughout June; some examples are beans, corn, cucumber, eggplant, lettuce (all varieties), onion, peas, squash and tomatoes. If this is your first time planting a garden, it is best to start small. A suggested plot size would be approximately 16x10 feet giving you 11 rows, each being 10 feet long. The key to a plentiful garden starts with the location of your plot. It needs to be in a sunny location that received at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day and has proper drainage. Also, make sure the soil in that location is rich with nutrients or that you supplement the soil with compost prior to planting. „

lanting seeds is the most economical way to produce vegetables but some find it easier to purchase already established plants. I find planting seeds very easy even for a beginning gardener and have produced gorgeous vegetables. Each seed has a guideline for spacing which can be found on your seed packet. Spacing your crop properly is key to a plentiful harvest. Make sure your small plants are not overshadowed by the larger so that they all receive adequate sunlight and water. Speaking of water, it is the key to making your garden grow. It is best to water in the morning so that the plants dry quickly which helps deter disease. In the absence of rain, an inch of water weekly is best for heavier soils. If your soil is on the sandier side, more frequent watering will be necessary. Depending on your preference, there are several varieties of organic and non-organic fertilizers available and of course composting is a wonderful natural way to recycle and provide organic nutrients to your garden. In just a few short weeks, you’ll notice the fruits of your labor starting to sprout. By Easter, you will be enjoying your garden fresh vegetables on your dinner table. It’s a great feeling to know you are feeding your family fresh produce from your garden.

• Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line roasting pan with two layers of heavy duty aluminum foil. Spray with cooking spray. Layer onion in bottom of pan. Rinse short ribs to remove bone shavings. Nestle ribs in onions. Rub with back of spoon 2 teaspoons ketchup. Sprinkle flour over ribs Season starting with worchestershire and soy sauce, then dry seasonings. Pour ½ jar of Greek peppers; being sure to place one whole pepper on each rib. Pour pepper liquid and red wine into pan. • Cover tightly and begin roasting. After 1-2 hours, you may remove aluminum foil (if ribs are browned) and continue to roast. Ribs are done when meat easily separates from bone. If necessary, add additional liquid so that onions and ribs do not burn and blacken.

SQUASH CASSEROLE 4 - 6 medium/large yellow squash 1 large onion, slivered ½ stick butter (divided) 1 cup sour cream 2 cups shredded cheese (divided)-your choice Note: sharp cheddar, mixed Colby/Jack Salt & Pepper Garlic powder 1 sleeve Ritz Crackers (roughly crushed) • Clean squash and scrape any dark spots on skin. Remove ends. Slice squash ¼ inch half-moons. In 2 T butter, sauté slivered onions until just tender. Add squash to onions, season then remove from heat. • In skillet or in bowl, add sour cream, 1 cup cheese and ½ sleeve crushed Ritz crackers. Spray 9 x 13 baking dish with butter cooking spray. Place squash/onion into baking dish. • Top with remaining cheese. In emptied skillet, melt remaining 2 T. butter and add remaining crushed Ritz crackers stirring to combine. • Top squash casserole with crackers. Bake in preheated 350-degree oven for 20 minutes. Do NOT overcook.
MAMA’S SOUTHERN STYLE FRESH GREEN BEANS A mess of green beans (amount depends on how many serving) 1 small onion (slivered) 4 - 6 slices of good bacon-1/2 inch slice 1 chicken bouillon Salt & Pepper Garlic powder • Prepare green beans; wash and remove ends. Place in bowl and add water just until reaches top of green beans. Nestle bouillon down into water and green beans. Allow to sit while preparing bacon and onions. • In 4-5 quart Dutch oven, brown sliced bacon. Add onions into bacon. • Add green beans and liquid to Dutch oven. Season with S&P and garlic powder (salt sparingly) On medium heat bring green beans’ liquid to boil. Reduce heat. Do NOT cover. • Stir to combine making sure that bouillon has dissolved. Cook just until tender.

Mix all ingredients in a shaker with ice, shake and pour into a chilled cocktail glass.
Taste of the
Chocolate- Covered Strawberries
Ingredients 6 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped 3 ounces white chocolate, chopped 1 pound strawberries with stems (about 20), washed and dried very well Directions Put the semisweet and white chocolates into 2 separate heatproof medium bowls. Fill 2 medium saucepans with a couple inches of water and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Turn off the heat; set the bowls of chocolate over the water to melt. Stir until smooth. (Alternatively, melt the chocolates in a microwave at half power, for 1 minute, stir and then heat for another minute or until melted.)
Once the chocolates are melted and smooth, remove from the heat. Line a sheet pan with parchment or waxed paper. Holding the strawberry by the stem, dip the fruit into the dark chocolate, lift and twist slightly, letting any excess chocolate fall back into the bowl. Set strawberries on the parchment paper. Repeat with the rest of the strawberries. Dip a fork in the white chocolate and drizzle the white chocolate over the dipped strawberries. Set the strawberries aside until the chocolate sets, about 30 minutes.

A
rt Crawl is a free fall art festival serving as a catalyst to celebrate the emergence of new and innovative artists in and around Central Florida. This year, Art Crawl boasted over 50 local artists from over 20 different cities in Central Florida selling artwork and competing for prizes alongside live music, live art demonstrations and featured local organizations and sponsors that proactively support the arts. Art Crawl is focused on building relationships with artists, art organizations, sponsors and the community to bring about awareness, support and collaboration. This annual juried art festival is an accessible venue for art collection, entertainment and FUN!

Okeechobee County Centennial committee kicked off the Centennial year on Saturday January 21, 2017 with a “dancing in the streets” event. The Kick Off Celebration was an evening event that hosted a variety of activities for all age groups and interests. The Kick Off event venue was the 1926 Historic County Courthouse which is the subject of the Centennial logo that was designed by local Artist Bridgette Waldau. The event had a variety of food options from local non profits and the Gourmet Food Truck Expo. Games and activities for the youngsters, along with photo booth and dunk tank. Historical timeline banners led the way to the Smithsonian WaterWay exhibit in the courthouse. The Okeechobee County Centennial Committee partnered with the Historical Society to sell Centennial Speaker Series tickets, commemorative rifle tickets, Centennial tumblers, lapel pins, historical prints, books and more. The Centennial Committee would like to thank the special guests that attended which included both County Commissioners and City Councilman as well as the Centennial Sponsors. Tanglewood Art League's 7th annual Art Exhibition and Sale took place on Saturday, Jan. 21 at the clubhouse in the Community Room Gallery. Tanglewood Art League’s Norma Evans, president and Judith Eckstein, secretary invited me to attend and I must say everyone put their best foot forward. The 2017 theme "Art in the Park" was created by Joyce Robbins, committee chair and her committee worked hard to assure those who attended had a relaxing, inspirational and fun afternoon. While guests walked and enjoyed looking and purchasing their favorite art pieces, they also enjoyed refreshments while sitting on benches donated by Lowe’s. The art league had two raffle drawings. One was an original painting by Cathy Futral, retired Professor of Art at South Florida State College. The second were two Waterford crystal wine goblets donated by June George, a member of the art league. All proceeds of the raffle will go a scholarship fund where an art student attending South Florida State College will receive a monetary grant, which is presented at the Student Art Reward Reception.
