EDITOR'S NOTE @OfficialLadyBosede FOUNDER & CEO OF HIFH

Welcome to 2023 and HAPPY NEW YEAR to you! Just like that! It is 2023 and I know if you’re anything like me; you came into this year with a list of things that you either would like to do differently, or you would like to start doing. I’m not going to say that these are new year resolutions. I’ll just say that they are areas we would like to improve on. So let me ask you a quick question. What exactly does the new year mean to you? Does it mean starting a new business, hobby, re-visiting that book idea from 2020 or starting that ministry? Or does it mean striving to make it a better year than the previous year? I think for me it’s a little bit of both. If you have been following my last few articles, you’ll notice that I have been sharing my weight journey with you, and I am pleased to report that I’m still going strong and enjoying the results of all of the hard work! I'm 3 sizes down! Glory to God! One thing that I want to say to everyone this year is this...Do not put a limit on what you are striving to do this year!

Allow it to center you, allow it to direct you, allow it to ground you, and most importantly, allow it to encourage you.

EDITOR'S NOTE @OfficialLadyBosede FOUNDER & CEO OF HIFH

Sometimes we get so caught up with putting ourselves in a box and we don’t realize our true potential! Hear me when I say if you can DREAM it; you can ACHIEVE it! If you haven’t already, I want you to choose just one word. This word is going to be the word that you carry throughout the year of 2023. Allow it to center you, allow it to direct you, allow it to ground you, and most importantly, allow it to encourage you. if you’re wondering what my word is for the year of 2023 it is GRATITUDE. It is so easy to lose sight of the amazing things that God does for us and for me personally, I think the word gratitude holds several different meanings. Gratitude for simply being here. Gratitude for God’s grace and mercy that is immeasurable. Gratitude that I am not where I used to be. Gratitude for the blessings that God has bestowed upon myself and my family. It takes me back to the scripture found in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 ~ In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. One of my favorite verses! Whew! Just when you think you’re in a bad situation, please remember that there are people who are in a worse situation than you are, and for that you should be grateful! Speak of his goodness and let’s have a spirit of gratitude in 2023!

Tippi Shorter is no stranger to glamorizing Hollywood’s top leading ladies by means of giving them gorgeous locks. This edition's feature story touch on the career of Tippi Shorter. The past, present, and what the future holds for her. Like most people who follow their dream careers as adults Shorter didn’t exactly see something that she enjoyed doing as a youth as something that would later parlay into a successful career. “ I didn’t know I was inspired by fashion and be beauty. All I knew is I enjoyed the act of styling for my friends. I had a whole group of friends who I’d help put together outfits for performances.” Shorter, who grew up in Southern California, was heavily involved in singing and dance groups as a youth she was also charged with helping put together the outfits for her group to wear on stage. It was then that she was told that she has a very immense talent and that should consider attending beauty school.

RESTAURANT SPOTLIGHT

LET US FEAST! By: Mekaile Turner

Hey there lovely and thank you for accepting my invitation to dine with me. Tonight we’re taking a little bit of a drive out to Lake Lotawana, MO and a beautiful waterside restaurant that offers a magical romantic ambiance, and tantalizing 4 course special all to enjoy by the glistening waters of Lake Lotawana. Now I wear many hats outside of being a writer. One of which is making sure people get to where they need to go via rideshare. It’s a role I thoroughly enjoy, because it gives me the opportunity to meet new people and learn about what they do. On one beautiful afternoon I received a request to pick up a rider in Lake Lotawana ,Missouri. I found this to be exciting ,because I do love waterside residences actually I love the water altogether. I’ve been to many lakes in my life time all of them very beautiful but none as beautiful as this one. Of course something especial is Marina 27 I didn’t want to go alone so I decided to enlist the help and taste buds of my editor Ms. Bosede Iyewarun. As usual when trying out a new place I never know really what to expect especially when I drove up to Marina 27 only to find that this restaurant is literally sitting next to the lake! Sadly, by the time the day of our reservations came around the cold winds and weather of late fall had already set in. Still the lakeside wasn't any less beautiful than it was back when it was warmer. As I made my way down to the deck to the front entrance looking out to the lake my imagination was already starting to churn out its story. I was no longer in Missouri in fact I was transported to Cape Cod in all its beauty ready to meet a good friend to sit down and break bread of a wonderful dinner. JANUARY 2023

As you can see the interior of this restaurant is absolutely gorgeous! Stunning if you will. My editor was practically mesmerized by the scenery as was I. The table where we were seated was by the window closest to the dock to where we could view the entire lake and all its magical revelry. One reason why I really adore waterside is because of the calm that water tends to offer. Slow hypnotizing waves against a steady wind glistening in the sun like diamonds. A scene like that is enough to bring down the biggest stressors that you may have encountered for the day. It was now time to put our orders in. I had to overlook the menu very carefully , because I am allergic to shellfish. My favorite seafood is the shellfish variety, but sadly in my mid 20s my body said no more. So, I’m really careful in making sure that I don’t order things that have shellfish blended in them. Fortunately the menu here at Marina 27 had something for everybody including those like myself with food allergies. My editor and I decided on ordering the four course special. Mr. McFarland told me in the car that each month his restaurant features a four or three course menu special in order to give people a chance to see what their food is all about. On this evening there was a special for four course dinner at $34. Doesn’t sound too shabby until you see the portion size and believe me at this restaurant the portions will not disappoint. For my first course I decided to try the baby back ribs because hey who doesn't love a good BBQ? Well this BBQ wasn’t good it was exquisite. Their slow smoking method made me almost fall off the bone, and the pineapple glaze added a lovely sweetness to the meat but I’m pretty sure that somewhere in this flavor palette I could taste a little bit of cinnamon. That was something I have yet to clarify if there was cinnamon in that glaze but if there was I have to say kudos to the chef because it was delicious. It also made a very tasty dressing for the arugula salad that it came with.

BABY BACK RIBS The soup course was next. I decided on the M27 steak soup which featured a succulent and very tender beef tenderloin, crisp celery, onions and the best cubed russet potatoes I’ve ever eaten. I would say this soup in particular would be like a beef stew elevated to the next level. I’ve had some beef soups with beef tenderloins that was almost rubber-like, but just like the pork ribs this tenderloin was like literally falling apart it was that good. And, instead of having a very soupy wet broth the broth was a little bit thick almost like a gravy . For this particular soup it makes sense, because it was like eating a steak meal in soup form. And, the richness of that broth I could really imagine myself on a very cold winter day just knocking back in my sweater, and sipping a nice hot bowl of that soup.

JANUARY 2023

www.hifwmag.com

| 19

M27 STEAK SOUP People who know me well enough are aware that I am very big on protein especially steaks so naturally ordering the 12 oz prime KC strip with broccoli was definitely going to be my choice for the third course. Let me tell you what a choice it was! It was a beautiful medallion of perfectly cooked Kansas City strip steak not only that it was bacon wrapped. Now most people will tell you that trying to get a nice crisp consistency on your bacon surrounding your steak while trying to get a great consistency for your steak at the same time is a little bit difficult depending on how you’re cooking and your expertise on it. Sometimes the results can end up being a very well cooked steak and soggy bacon. Or nearly burnt to a crisp bacon, and let's just not ask questions about what happened to the steak. In this case, and I like my steaks medium rare, my portion was perfectly cooked. Surprisingly enough the entire strip of bacon that was surrounding the steak was thick and crispy. One thing that I really love about this restaurant is how they managed their seasonings. Nothing is ever over seasoned to the point of overbearing saltiness, or under seasoned to the point of hospital food. Thinking back on the numerous steaks that I have had in the past up until here recently I really think that Marina 27 by far has the best as far as mouthfeel and flavor.

OK, not gonna lie, but by the time the 4th and final course which was dessert came around my editor and I were pretty full to say the least. However for my critique I still wanted to give my dessert a try. For my dessert I chose the chocolate molten cake. As the name suggests it's a beautiful dark chocolate molten cake with molten lava in the middle of it. Now, I’ve had some pretty good molten cakes in the past, and this one I was pretty much anticipating to be on the same level as the others. Once I took a bite of it however, and my editor can pretty much vouch on this one for me, I had to stop for a second to really take in what I was tasting. The best way I could describe this cake is this; my great grandmother and I had a very close relationship. She was my heart, and among the many wonderful things she was in life she was also a very accomplished baker. This woman made cakes and pies that were out of this world especially her chocolate cakes. I remember on occasion when I was little, and she would bake one of her delicious chocolate cakes made from Swan cake flour and Hershey’s cocoa powder. But that wasn’t the best part. The best part came from her icing that she also made from Hershey’s cocoa powder. The end result was this rich dark chocolate flavor in a moist cake. That singular bite of that chocolate molten cake from Marina 27 immediately took me back to the days when my great grandmother used to bake cakes like that. I had to catch myself because for a brief moment I actually thought it was her cake. For that tiny moment my granny was there.

CHOCOLATE MOLTEN CAKE Going out to eat is one of those special pampering things for me next to getting my nails done, shopping or just going on a long drive by myself. It’s a way of treating yourself to something of an experience, because food is more than just sustenance. Food is unifier and an experience. Some places you go to will only leave you feeling just fed, while others will transport you to another place and time all through their choices of atmosphere and cuisine. I never expected to be transported by going to a seafood and steakhouse establishment. One moment I’m in the lovely landscape the Cape, and then with one tiny bite of cake I’m back in my great grandmother’s kitchen as a little girl anticipating slice of heaven in the form of chocolate cake. Marina 27 is not just another restaurant. It’s an institution, a gathering place, a thing of beauty. Lance McFarland and his team truly exhibit their love for food, and their love for the local public through their food. It’s rare nowadays to see that type of passion and love going to the offerings of a restaurant. It’s pleasant to see that there are still people out there who believe in quality over quantity. I am truly thankful that I was able to meet Mr. McFarland on that chance encounter during a rideshare. And, that he was able to share his passion with myself and my editor and now you. Until next we dine Stay Fabulous lovelies.

Who’s New & Right Now Tristan Parr of Subparr By: Mekaile Turner It’s not that often that you get to meet up and coming local talent in your area, but when you do watch out for them. One day they will really make it big on the scene. As it is for this talented individual that you're about to meet. I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Tristan Parr on an earlier assignment , and got to know him as a upcoming local musician. Parr’s band called Subparr consist of himself, his younger brothers ,as well as his father on occasion. I got a chance to sit down with Parr recently to discuss his career in music , hopes and goals for his band, as well as information on his current music.

JANUARY 2023

Although the musical bug wasn’t exactly biting during this time for Parr, the groundwork of inspiration was every bit of prevalent for him as a teen both in and out of school. “I come from a large family of five siblings. Back in high school I participated in a lot of spoken word competitions which eventually evolved into musical songwriting for me. My dad is a musician and he is my biggest inspiration. My next biggest inspiration is musician Larry Cohen. Writing comes and flows naturally for me as I did a lot of it in high school.” – Parr. It was only after Parr graduated high school in 2020 that he decided to become more serious about his music. But, don’t think that finding material for Parr is hard. His inspiration for the stories he tell through song comes through via life experiences. “It’s kind of hard to really define my music genre. Sometimes it’s on the alternative side other times it’s more on the indie singer-songwriter side. What I am aware of is that everything comes naturally for me as far as things go for my songs which are based off of life's trials as successes. What I write deals mostly with reminiscing on things like failed relationships, grieving it’s loss.

www.hifwmag.com

| 32

Subparr’s very first album Bridget Baby was released on November 5 th of this year with a second album currently in the works. “ I don’t mind putting myself out there. Majority of the bands makeup is myself and my dad and my brothers on occasion. What I love the most is the process, though it can be tedious at times, but it’s always good to have something like your album in your hands. Something tangible and accomplished.” As for what’s next? Parr feels the sky is the limit. He sees himself starting out playing live at local KCMO venues while remaining open to the possibility of musical collaborations with other local artists. For those that are also starting out their musical careers Parr had these words of encouragement. “ Don’t feel limited by what’s around you. Just do it with whatever you got, and build over time.” Parr’s band Subparr can be found on Apple music, Spotify, ITunes, and YouTube.

Welcome to Ethnic Enrichment Commission of Kansas City CONNECTING PIECES OF THE WORLD TO MAKE PEACE IN THE WORLD. It all began during America’s Bicentennial in 1976. Wanting to highlight Kansas City’s rich cultural heritage, Mayor Charles B. Wheeler formed the Ethnic Heritage Committee. This group planned an Ethnic Bicentennial Parade that included representation of 16 cultural/ethnic groups and presented ethnic menus at local restaurants. The Ethnic Heritage Committee spent tireless hours compiling a written history of the contributions made to Kansas City by various ethnic groups that won national recognition from the United States Bicentennial Association. After accomplishing these things, the group continue to meet and decided to work toward providing cultural education across the metro. One of the first things they decided to do was a “culture box.” This amounted to a tabletop display for each country that could be taken to schools and organizations with pictures and artifacts from that country sparking conversation, question and learning. This has continued through today as part of the cultural education and outreach program. In 1978, two members of the Naturalization Council, Madalyne Brock and Marion Trozzolo, pushed for the formation of the Ethnic Enrichment Committee. Carl DiCapo and John Duncan served as co-chairs for the first three years. During that time, because people had continually commented on enjoying the different foods, he first Ethnic Enrichment Festival was hosted at the Liberty Memorial.

JANUARY 2023

www.hifwmag.com

| 34

This first festival was done with no budget, borrowed pop-up tents, and lots of hard work. John Duncan was quoted in the Kansas City Star after that first festival saying he, “enjoys the festivals’ simple but important service of bringing people together. I really do feel people need to know (Kansas City) was settled by many different people. We all wear the same clothes here, but people can get into trouble by not understanding someone else’s culture” The festival was a great success and drew positive attention, including that of Mayor Richard Berkley and City Councilman Victor Swyden. They introduced a resolution to the Kansas City, Missouri City Council in 1980 officially forming the Mayor’s Ethnic Enrichment Commission (EEC). The founding members were Carl DiCapo (Italy), John Duncan & Carol Duncan )Scotland), Leonard Pryor (African American), Chet Ellis & Bob Blue (Native American), and Louise Birt (England). The Mayor’s Ethnic Enrichment Commission has grown to be the heart of showcasing Kansas City Metro’s diverse peoples and cultures. Continuing to be a commission of the Kansas City Mayor’s office, Commissioners now represent approximately 70 area cultural organizations with two hallmark events each year, the Ethnic Enrichment Festival and the Diplomatic Ball.

JANUARY 2023

www.hifwmag.com

| 35

The Ethnic Enrichment Festival is held every year on the third full weekend in August. The 2023 44th Annual Ethnic Enrichment Festival will be held on August 18, 19, and 20 in Swope Park. It will be another weekend filled with open-to-close entertainment, great shopping and delicious foods from around the world. The Ethnic Enrichment Commission works very closely with KC, MO Parks and Recreation Department to present to Kansas City arguably the best and largest multi-cultural event in the country. This family friendly event over 2½ days attracts over 50,000 people from across the metro and the region.

The EEC partners with many of KC’s cultural and international organizations including Heartland International Fashion Week, The International Relations Council, The Asian American Chamber of Commerce, Baraza African Cultures Center, and Global Ties KC. To learn more about the Ethnic Enrichment Commission and its various commissions, visit their website at: www.EECKC.org

The annual Diplomatic Ball will be held on April 22, 2023. Rotating which countries host this black tie/traditional clothing event, has this year’s ball, The I’s Have It, hosted by Ireland & Italy. This festive and elegant night will have foods from Ireland and Italy, Irish and Italian entertainment, followed by a night of dancing. Through the EEC’s Outreach program, the commission plays a large part in the Northland Ethnic Festival, the Wyandotte County Ethnic Festival and other festivals across the metro. They work closely with municipalities, businesses, organizations and schools bringing cultural food, entertainment and education – including culture boxes!

In 2009, Kansas City was home to various African communities whose members were having a positive impact. What was missing was an entity helping to strengthen these communities, bring them together, and showcase their contributions to the greater Kansas City community. Baraza African Cultures Center was formed as a Kansas nonprofit to build communities through events and cultural education. From 2009 through 2012, Baraza hosted a July 4 th Celebration. This four-day event attracted Africans from across the midWest and the US to see African & African diaspora superstars in concert, vendors, and fashions. In addition, Baraza hosted movie viewings, panel discussions, and educational programming. All the programming was aimed at promoting African communities, African businesses & professionals, and at building bridges with people across the KC metro. While starting with the universals of culture, i.e., food, sports, and the arts, it was recognized that these are just the entry points to learning about and learning to value diverse people and cultures.

MODEL SPOTLIGHT

breaking barriers and Cancelling All Stereotypes AS A RISING PETITE TOP MODEL By: Kennetha Gatlin HIFW: Thank you so much for agreeing to do an interview for the magazine. We’ve heard great things you’re doing in the modeling world and wanted to hear more from you. Shanna: Thank you for having me, I’m excited. HIFW: For the first question, How did you get started in runway modeling? Shanna: Well I've always liked it especially when I was younger 12, 11 around those ages because I would watch Tyra Bank, Naomi Campbell and I just thought they were beautiful women, black women and I love it. I'm like “oh man, I want to model” and then it hit me that I'm not getting any taller and I remember thinking as a little girl I'm going to be 6 ft tall and I'm going to model but I ended up only being 5ft tall, so it was kind of a hindrance for me with my height. Then the beauty standard of modeling 5’8” and above and seeing that standard on TV as a child I really wanted to do it, but I didn’t think I could. I didn't get involved with modeling until actually about two and a half years ago. When I finally decided I can't let the standard height stop me from doing what I wanted. I love modeling, I've been watching it since I was a little girl. Let me just give it a try. I can't say I didn't do it if I just don't try. I made that decision two and a half years ago. I'm going to get out there, do some modeling and see if I’m even good at it. Since I am small I have to put my best foot forward and I have to do what I do, all I can, to show these tall girls up. My first photoshoot I did with my husband, LaMal. I feel like I've always been photogenic smile-wise but I never thought I could be on a runway. That was a challenge-factor for me. So I auditioned for the first time for a fashion show and it was before the pandemic. The fashion show was canceled and it didn't go through with anything. Then, I auditioned for Kansas City Fashion Week for the first time and I said I'm just going to do it. I'm going to see what happens and I'm going to do my best. I did it and I made the roster and I’ve been doing it since.

HIFW: Tell us about your most recent modeling experience and the awards you won..

HIFW: So as a wife, mom, and model how do you balance family life? Is there a balance?

Shanna: In December [2022] I went to Mississippi for a competition with Victoria Henley. She was actually one of the models on one of the seasons of America's Next Top Model. She had a fashion competition and I went ahead and put in for it and participated. It was different categories, walking for several different designers, showing your style and personality. I actually won in two categories. One of the categories was Judge’s Choice. Out of everyone that they saw the judges felt that I wow’d them. So I won that category, and then also the second category was the Portfolio Competition. I submitted my photographs digitally and also on paper and I won for Best Portfolio. So that was really exciting for me because I’m an artist. I draw, I sculpt, I paint, so as an artist winning the portfolio category was a [big] win for me.

Shanna: I am older now, I'm in my thirties so I've already established a family life. It’s kind of hard because I'm not in my 20’s anymore, just getting started with life. I'm already established in what I'm doing with a career and going through changes with my children. My oldest is in sports and my youngest will be in sports as well. So going to practices, games, and then my husband. He’s a videographer and photographer so helping him out when he has film and movie shoots. So of course, 100% I’m a mom so I’m helping my family do everything. So it is like trying to squeeze in that piece of time for me. Luckily, my husband is in photography and film, that does help. I can say, “Hey, let’s go in the hallway and take a quick photoshoot”. It makes it a little easier because my husband is in that line of work. I can practice my runway walk and have him film me to see how it looks.

He’s able to be there to assist me. Then there’s fashion shows, traveling for fashion shows. Being a mom, I’m making sure I don’t miss moments with my kids, having all arrangements made, and being there for my husband. Making sure my job as a mom is done while trying to do something for me. Because if mom’s not happy, no one is happy. I think it’s important to take time for self-care. Self love and self-care is 100% one thing that I will do. So if I need to take a break, I will. If I want to audition for HIFW, I’m going to audition. HIFW: Where do you aspire to take your modeling career? Shanna: As of right now, I’ve done a lot of local fashion shows. Local photoshoots, and I’m trying to expand, especially this year, going out of state more. Venturing out of Kansas City. I want to get with an international agent so I can travel. I do want to travel, gain experience, meet new people. I want to be an inspiration to others. I want to show my brand and who I am. I am a petite model and I want to show more representation of that. My goal is to represent myself, and the petite women around the world because we do not see enough of ourselves when it comes to modeling. I want to mentor, share my experience and showcase my skills and do more modeling because this is what I love.

HIFW: This takes me to my next question. Typical models are 5’7”/5’8” or taller and thin. However, we are seeing a lot more representation of different ethnicities in the editorials and print today. However, for the high-fashion runway, it is still the ‘typical model.” How are you carving a new space or representation in the industry? Would you stick to the runway, or open to print as well? Shanna: I am wanting to get more involved in more editorial and print. I love it. But the runway, that’s all me right now. I love fashion in general. So I want to do as much with it as I can. I love representing myself and showing off the designer's brand. I’m the lady out here rocking dreadlocks, and this big [petite]. HIFW: How do you keep your figure in shape? Is it a lifestyle that you live or do you have a rigorous workout that you stick to? Shanna: Well, being a mom and a wife I really don’t have time for the gym. It doesn’t fit. I have a 14 year old and a 6 year old and after work I go home to them. However, I do workout at home at least 4-5 days a week. Since my oldest son plays baseball and football we get outside and workout together. So that’s how I like to keep it. When my son is active, that’s more reason for me to be active. When he’s in season we will run together, do push ups together, and also get the little one out there too. HIFW: Who is your dream designer that you would love to work with or that you have worked with? Shanna: My dream designer…I have two. The dream designer that I have worked with and I am so glad that I’ve worked with is Regal Status. She [Princess] she is amazing to work with. Her designs are so classy and elegant. I love her style, it's so chic and urban and it fits me. I love the fact that I got the opportunity to walk for her. The designer I would love to work with is Tivona Couture. Her prints and fabric are beautiful. I think she’s an amazing designer. HIFW: What would you say your personal style is? Shanna: My style is more or less….it depends on the day. On a typical day, it’s a little street, a little simple. I love jackets, halter tops. I kinda have that “stuck in my 20’s” style. I love jeans, a good fitting pair of jeans is hard to come by, so when I get a good fitting pair of jeans I wear them to death. That is me on a regular basis. I love vans, those are my favorite sneaks. That’s the typical me. I’m more simplistic but I like to have statement pieces. A lot of times I’ll have red eyebrows, or I’ll have ear cuffs on, something simple outfit-wise and then something bold to go with it to make it stand out.

HEARTLAND INTERNATIONAL FASHION WEEK HEARTLAND INTERNATIONAL FASHION WEEK

HIFW: What was your most memorable experience as a model? Shanna: I would have to say my first audition with Kansas City Fashion Week and got on the roster for the first time ever. That stood out to me over anything, because it was my first experience, but I didn’t know I would be able to do it. So I was like “Omgosh!” and I was jumping around and dancing and saying “I’m going to be in a fashion show!” That was my most memorable and happiest moment in my modeling career. Just knowing that I’m taking that leap and doing it. HIFW Season 2 Highlights | Hair & Glam Friday Night Showcase | @JHutchinsonProPhoto | Booking: jhutchinsonphotos@gmail.com

HIFW: As a mother, wife, and working mother what advice would you give mothers that want to go for their dreams? Shanna: I would say, you have to be able to put yourself first. You’ll never be happy if you don’t do what you love. I know when it comes to having kids you think you have to put stuff on the backburner to raise your children. It’s hard, but there is a sense of balance because if there’s something you want to go for you have to do it, try it out and enjoy your life. It will be a year or two years later and you’ll say “I wish I did this,” or “I wish I did that.” Children are not hindrances in life. My baby boys have helped me grow. There are things that I thought I would never do, but I did it because I want to be that example for my babies. To let them know that if there is something that you are striving for, to be great within yourself you have to get out there and do it. That’s the advice I can give any mother. If mommy is giving up on herself, then those babies are going to give up on themselves. The cycle will continue. Just do it! HIFW: What have you learned about yourself since you began modeling? Shanna: Well I’ve learned to be more confident within myself and capable of doing what I set my heart out to do. I feel like majority of us just coast through life and doing what we’re “supposed” to do and not fulfill our needs for ourselves and passion. I realized that I am capable of being happy and great in what I do. I realized, the big fashion models and designers were regular people at one point that had a dream. I’m so happy with myself that I’m pushing myself because I’m doing things I thought I would never do. Like having this interview now. To be honest, I’m a reserved and introverted person. It’s because I’m short. There are instances with me where I’m big and seeming [extroverted] but I have a very introverted personality. Modeling has opened me up. Opened me up to people, the public and showing myself. I have social media because of modeling. Yea, I had a little Facebook page posting pictures with my kids and whatnot. Now, I have an instagram, a model page, I’m doing this and that, showing my life. It’s allowing me to be me.

HIFW: What goes through your mind when you go down the runway. Being that you’re introverted naturally, is it like an alter-ego, Sasha Fierce kind of personality, or forcing yourself? Shanna: Oh you can say it’s like a Sasha Fierce personality. When I’m on the runway I’m not thinking “Oh my gosh, all these people are staring at me, nooo!” More or less, I am an artist and modeling is an art form to me. As an artist, when I walk out there I’m showing art. In the design and myself. I’m taking on a personality to display that piece. So when I walk out there I’m showing a piece of artwork and I’m going to show it the best way I can. Backstage, I’m nervous. But as soon as I step out there I’m like, “yea.” HIFW. Well you look like you’ve been doing this for 20+ years, you’ve got it down packed. The walk, the face, everything. Especially when you did the hair and makeup show. Shanna: Yea, it’s art for me. Getting my hair and makeup done, I’m like my regular self. When I see myself in the mirror I’m thinking to myself, “how can I display this artwork.” I’m very analytical when it comes to my modeling. I want to display the pieces as though they should be shown. So I take on that mindset and become the piece. HIFW: Will Season 3? Shanna: I auditioning.
