FOODIE SPOTLIGHT
LET US FEAST! By: Mekaile Turner
Hey there lovelies, and thank you for accepting my invitation to dine with me again! It’s said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so I’m taking you with me to one of my favorite places to have that important meal, Messenger Coffee. Located in the heart of Downtown Kansas City, MO Messenger Coffee Co & Ibis Bakery was officially launched in 2013 as a conglomerate between three smaller coffee shops. The goal of Messenger Coffee is to bring responsibly sourced, and locally farmed fresh ingredients to the local table of KCMO. Their coffees are sourced from countries such as Ethiopia, Guatemala, and El Salvador. As a writer/blogger, a coffee shop is sort of the Plexpod workspace for creatives like us. And, of course, MAY 2023
I could practically go to any Starbucks or Panera Bread, sit down with my pen and notepad and have an inspirational cup of joe. The only thing is that franchised places like that don’t inspire me. As a creator, my work is unique, so it is only fitting to brainstorm in a place that is just as unique both in atmosphere and its fare. Though traditional bacon and eggs sounds remarkable, sometimes one wants breakfast kicked up a notch. I absolutely LOVE avocados, and when avocado toast became all the rage, I found it to be more than just a trendy dish. Messenger makes it a morning staple by calling it their Avocado Tartine, then dressing it with herb seasoning, caramelized onions on buttered grain toast. Accompanying this mornings masterpiece is two perfectly poached eggs,

arugula, and sliced radishes. But, of course, one can’t visit a coffee shop without having a nice hot cup of coffee. Ethically sourced cup of coffee, that is. As mentioned earlier, Messenger sources their coffees from Ethiopia (Ethiopia Blend), Guatemala (Guatemala Blend), and El Salvador (El Salvador Blend). Ethiopia Blend: Has a sweet fruity punchlike note to it with a smooth silky mouthfeel. Guatemala: Has a floral/citrus mixed with chocolate notes along with wine and nutty flavors. El Salvador: Has a mildly acidic flavor with chocolate and caramel notes. Besides the food, it’s the atmosphere that helps keep me on my toes. While Messenger is a three-level coffee shop and bakery, the atmosphere is that of your friendly neighborhood bistro. A perfect place to sit and unwind, or for creatives like me brainstorm. Amidst the local art displays, and watching the bakers create their baked masterpieces right before your eyes, Messenger Coffee Co. & Ibis Bakery is sure to become your next home away home!

Bosede [BOSS-uh-DAY] is a West African Native raised in two different cultures literally getting the BEST OF BOTH WORLDS! It's clear that the fashion industry to most on the outside world is nothing more than glitter and glamor. And, they'd be right in their thinking were it not for trial and error, organization, meetings, rehearsals, lots of planning, and plenty of coffee to mitigate the fatigue that goes into creating just one show. However, ask those whose dream was it to be apart of this beautiful chaos if they'd trade it for other ventures, the answer would be a resounding 'no'. Why? Because for those people the seeds of their dream was planted, and nurtured through education, hard work, determination, and faith. Meet Bosede Iyewarun. One of the many who had the courage to dream, and dared to take a leap of faith through her faith to build a new kind of fashion empire. Born in the country of Nigeria in West Africa, Iyewarun spent majority of her youth attending school in the United States. "I was six years old when I first came to America, and attended elementary school in Grandview, Missouri. I went to secondary school (high school) in Nigeria, and attended college back in the states at McPherson College in McPherson, KS." After earning her Bachelors in Photography & Mass Communication from McPherson College in the early 90s, Iyewarun went straight to work utilizing her skills as a camera operator for WDAF 4 News (Fox 4 News today) in Kansas City. While doing so she also worked as a freelance wedding portrait photographer. Photography and camera work has always been a passion for Iyewarun instilled in her from her father. " My father was a professional photographer and college professor." After a few years of media service, Iyewarun's career path began to shift more towards the corporate sector when she started as a sales agent working

up to call center manager for Sprint. She later transitioned to call center manager for Ariel Communications (now T-Mobile) after being laid off from Sprint. It wasn't until 2011 while still working in the communications field that a new inspiration washed over Iyewarun in the form of unique and one-of-a-kind accessories. That inspiration would soon be known as EarKandie Paparazzi Inspired Jewelry which officially launched on a rare palindrome date 11-11-11.
www.hifwmag.com
| 18
For Iyewarun the launch of her accessories and fashion line meant doing more than just the ordinary brick and mortar concept. " I wanted EarKandie to become an avenue for hosting fashion shows which is where the yearly EarKandie Fashion Show Extravaganza came to fruition." From there the EarKandie Model Academy was created to help train new models who wanted to be apart of the shows. As successful as the EarKandie brand would become, it was nothing compared to what was ahead for Iyewarun. "After several years of prayer, and patience I received the idea of creating Heartland International Fashion Week." After taking a two-year break for planning, Iyewarun officially announced the launch of Heartland International Fashion Week on 11/11/2018. In an arena of other well-known fashion shows such as Kansas City Fashion Week, Local Runway KC, and West 18th Street the question rises. How will HIFW manage to integrate itself, and what new ideas will be brought to the table that other shows aren't doing? One of those things according to Iyewarun is faith. "Heartland International Fashion Week is a faith-based fashion event that speaks to a more ethnic and international demographic. We are absolutely willing to collaborate with anyone whose values fall in line with ours. I'm a follower of Jesus Christ. I live and breathe worshipping God. As well as continually hearing his purpose for my life." One of those purposes revealed to Iyewarun is to make HIFW not only a platform for international designers, but designers that have yet to have a moment in the spotlight. I know that there are so many talented designers out there that have not shown their collections at other fashion events.
The plans God has for me surpass any plan I could possibly have for myself! So I trust him! HIFW is here to set the precedent for anyone who has talent, and falls in line with our vision and mission. They will get space on our platform.” And, speaking of platforms, one very special one was recently bestowed upon Iyewarun and HIFW from Mayor Quinton Lucas. Mayor Lucas declared the month of May Heartland International Fashion Month. It's an honor that Iyewarun plans on utilizing for the future of HIFW. Soon after launching HIFW,
Iyewarun has gone on to BUILD HER EMPIRE now known as Heartland International Fashion House Enterprises LTD. Her group of companies include Heartland International Fashion Week LLC, Heartland International Fashion Week Magazine [HIFWMag] which is Kansas City's very first International and Lifestyle Magazine and Branding Masterclass By HIFW. Each individual brand contributing to Fashion, Personal Branding and Business Branding. There's a lot of work to do in the areas of being a trailblazer, a supporter and a blessing to those with amazing talent and passion. I want to make my mark! "I am not close to being done with building this empire. The plan is to GO GLOBAL! With GOD....ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE!"

Season 3 Designer Spotlights Olha Potapenko and Tatiana Yanchenko belong to a particular group of fashion designers usually referred to as "designers from birth." Being children,hi these young ladies were fond of modeling and tailoring outfits for their toys, and it almost seems like this very childish occupation has become a strong foundation for their current business. Tatiana was born in 1980 in Dnepropetrovsk and Olha was born in Dnepropetrovsk in 1979. In 2002, she graduated from the Kiev College of Textile Industry with a major in outerwear design. It was the year 2005 that became a constituent of the creative tandem of the young designers Olha Potapenko and Tatiana Yanchenko, marking the beginning of their journey together. In a very short period of time, pieces from Olha and Tatiana's collections conquered the Ukrainian audience, after which they spread to markets abroad. The remarkable collaboratively designed masterpieces of the lovely ladies take an active part in various competitions, taking prizes and receiving recognition of eminent figures of fashion and arts. Since I was 9, I knew that I wanted to be a designer. From there I pursued my dream, learning to sew shortly there after, so I could master the craft of garment creation. I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in apparel studies from Stephens College where I not only dug deeper into my passion for fashion design and creativity but also discovered the joy of storytelling through design. To me, being a custom designer is less about making a garment with my name on it and more about making a garment that directly reflects & uplifts the wearer. Fashion is a form of art, but it is nothing if it does not speak to or tell a story about the person wearing it. I’ve been sewing since I was 12 years old, so I discovered this passion at a very young age. Being guided by creativity, combining my passion for garment creation and people is something I will enjoy doing for as long as I am blessed to do it. Season 3 Designer Spotlights The promotion of body positivity and self-esteem for women was the motivation for LaToya Rozof to start 79Roze Dress Shop. The idea was to provide affordable and fashion forward dress options for women with curves. The average woman is a size 14+, yet mainstream stores have limited dress options. The ultimate goal is to empower women to embrace their bodies and not feel pressured to conform to societal pressures of being a certain dress size or weight. LaToya’s love for fashion started as a little girl and she always wanted a career in the fashion world. She holds a B.S. in Apparel and Textile Marketing from Kansas State University and did a quick stint in the retail world working for Talbots and Halls. Wife and mom are other titles that she’s balancing while building her brand and business. 79Roze Dress Shop has been featured in HERLIFE, Kansas City, Voyage ATL and KC, Aymie, BAM and Fashion Gxd magazine as well as local fashion shows. Giving back to the community, specifically fellow female entrepreneurs is a passion. 79Roze loves to collaborate with local artists to help promote their work. A long -term goal is to be able to become an angel investor for up and coming female businesses. SHOP: 79Roze.com Ever since I was a little girl, I have always been fascinated with fashion. I used to dream of growing up and becoming a fashion designer and would carry around sketch books with hundreds of my designs, hoping that the world would see them one day. Never did I imagine that my dream of being a fashion designer would be by way of crochet. In December 2018, I was looking for a hobby and decided to pick up a crochet hook for the very first time. I pulled up as many YouTube tutorials for beginners that I could find, and it took me several days to figure out how to even make one single stitch. After it finally clicked, I crocheted every single day, pushing myself to learn as many things about this craft as I could. In February 2019, only 3 months after making my very first stitch, Studio Rae was born. In November 2019, I made my runway debut, appearing in my very first fashion show. I’ve had my work sold in several boutiques, and I have been interviewed to be a featured designer in a fashion magazine. And to top it off, in February 2020, I was chosen to be a designer in New York Fashion Week. In over 3 years, I’ve accomplished so much as a crochet designer, but this is only the beginning. There’s a lot more to come from Studio Rae. SHOP: etsy.com/shop/StudioRaeCreations

SPECIAL FEATURE
The Future is FEMarkable By: Mekaile Turner
I remember back when I was 13 years old. I was in the eighth grade, and transferred to a new school early in the school year. Shy and used to being bullied, I was prepared to spend my final year in middle school by myself in order to protect my peace. I despised being out on the spot, abhorred giving upfront class presentations, and answering questions about myself to a totally new set of classmates felt like a daily police interrogation. It was a repeat of the embarrassment I experienced at my previous school. Only now did I feel trapped. It wasn’t until an old friend of my mother’s ran into her one day, and explained to her about a new youth program for girls that she was coordinating for. YWCA’s Girls Time Out Program was designed to help mold young teen girls like myself back then into more confident and aware young women. This was done through learning disciplines of proper etiquette, public speaking, health education, and performing arts. It was that very program which helped me enjoy performing in public, socializing with others, and virtually breaking out of my shell. Such a program, though very much needed in the community, hasn’t been in existence for quite sometime, primarily due to budget constraints in certain areas. It left many wondering when and if a solid program like GTO would ever make a comeback. Well, one local KCMO woman heard and answered that call. Meet Iesha Tyler, founder & CEO of IAM413TEENS. Tyler, an Organizational Leadership graduate from The University of Kansas, spent 13 years working in the higher education sector for the University of Missouri Kansas City. “My monumental specialty, and main calling in life was to become a youth mentor. Something I wished I had at that young age.” While in school, Tyler faced significant loss when she lost her mother's jail confinement and father passed away. “I fell into a deep depression at that point. So much so that I simply dropped out of school.” Despite making the decision to leave school, Tyler always felt that there was a special she needed to fulfill.

And, that was her calling to utilize her compassion for young girls, and cater to their needs. Thus, on September 9th of 2016 Tyler’s organization IAM413TEENS was born. “IAM413TEENS is a nonprofit organization catering to the city’s young girls from eighth grade to twelfth. The four-session project, which is held for two sessions in both spring and fall, teaches participants about confidence building, public speaking, and etiquette.” Said Tyler. In addition to basic public skills, the participants learn by working on various other fun projects, such as hosting the IAM413TEENS Talk Show on Spotify, podcast work, and annual events such as the Mother/Daughter Masquerade Etiquette Gala, the I Am College Prep, and Girl Boss Leadership Development and Early Entrepreneurship Prep .
MAY 2023
As for the future of Tyler’s organization? She definitely sees potential in expanding beyond Kansas City to across the nation. “ I would definitely love to see chapters of IAM413TEEN in different parts of the United States. I would like for these chapters to target mainly young girls of color. I’m also looking forward to having a headquarters for the organization as well. God is confirming a space for me right now, and it will be tailored to the program.”

Mayor Motherhood: Quincy Bennett
PERSONALITY FEATURE
ON LIFE & BEING A MAYORS MOM BY: MEKAILE TURNER In my many years of journalism, I have met some very interesting and important people. It never fails that I’ll get a tad nervous before meeting them and then those jitters go away after said meeting. So, when I was asked to do an interview with the mother of Kansas City, Missouri Mayor Quinton Lucas, my nervousness was set on high. I mean this is the Mayor’s mother, and first impressions are lasting impressions. I kept imagining myself meeting a Jackie Kennedy-esque woman of color with all the poise and grace of what an elegant mayoral mom is. My usual “getting to know you” style would not work here, I needed to step it up a notch. When Ms. Bennett suggested meeting at her favorite spot called Bliss Books and Wine downtown, I started to feel somewhat comfortable. I love both a good book and vino. Upon walking into the establishment I was met by this ultra-sweet motherly individual wearing a similar style of blazer/ jean combo with Converse tennis shoes. The fashion girl in me wanted to swoon over them since I adore Converse shoes, but I decided to keep it cool. We introduced ourselves to one another before retiring to a private meeting room for the interview. My mind was now at ease once it was time to start the questions and get to know who the Mayor of Kansas City, Missouri’s mother was. Right off the bat, Ms. Bennett made it clear that she doesn’t talk too much about herself being somewhat of a private person. Which was understandable. When you or someone close to your family is constantly in the public eye, opinions can rather be unkind. Sometimes media can pose a greater threat with probing inquiries ready to seek, kill and destroy reputations. Fortunately, HIFW isn’t about that media life nor am I which I think may have put Ms. Bennett at ease. This was a nice segue into the topic of handling media and public negativity.

“ In the beginning of his career, (Mayor Lucas), some things I’d hear or read about him would make me so upset. There was a time when I would sit, and respond to mean comments online until I realized there was no point in doing so.” She was right. Often the biggest critics we think we’re facing are no more than just a singular keyboard warrior whose confidence extends no further than click send. And, a lot of the time people like that have more underlying life problems than one knows about. This is why Ms. Bennett sticks to her motto of how to treat people. A motto she also instilled in her children at a young age. “ I’ve told my children don’t ever let me see you do anything different. I feel that we can all learn something from everyone, and no one is better than anyone. Deep down we all have the same problems no matter what our circumstances are. Quinton does his best to treat people right knowing that he could always one day fall from where he is now.” With this, I also got a glimpse of what Mayor Lucas is like as well as what his upbringing was like as well. According to Ms. Bennett, her son Mayor Lucas has had all the makings of a great leader from a young age. Something that still astonishes her to this very day. “I had a feeling that he was going into politics although I’m not for sure as to how he got into it he’s much more confident than I am.
I was a bit nervous about him running for Mayor, but I’ve always believed in my child. There’s this side of me when I’m driving down the highway it strikes me that wow! My son is the mayor, and responsible for everything in this area!” As she was telling me more about his interests, I began to realize Mayor Lucas and I have a lot in common. In addition to being the same age, we both were on high school debate teams at the same time, enjoy reading newspapers, and used to play pretend school as teachers when we were young. “At seven he said to me that he wanted to be a teacher, preacher, or lawyer. Of course, that wasn’t the outcome lol! I wanted him to become a sports agent so he could buy me a new Audi! Lol! We both burst into laughter. I mean hey a mama can dream right?! “ I remember when he was little, and played teacher with his stuffed animals using the encyclopedia books we had as desks. He would go up and down the aisle talking to them like students.” This reminded me of when I was that young doing the same thing in my grandmother’s kitchen. I instantly imagined us on a Saturday morning conducting “classes” around the same time. An adorable story Ms. Bennett shared with me about the future mayor was when he created a panoramic pencil drawing of an entire city using long sheets of paper taped together. “It was amazing what he had created.”
Listening to Ms. Bennett talk about her children including Mayor Lucas was amazing. You can certainly see and feel the pride she has in them. Especially her son the Mayor. Which brought me to my question about how much of a hand did Ms. Bennett have in shaping Mayor Lucas into what he is today? I’m a firm believer that parents play a pivotal role in directing a child’s development and path in life. Most of the time you hear about parents who become 100% invested in their children’s interests to the point of ritualism. This is to ensure the child or children grow up to be the best in their field of work. For Ms. Bennett, wanting a successful life for her children never became an obsession. Although like many parents she wanted the best outcome for her children while at the same time remembering to treat them as children. “I was always the easygoing mom when it came to homework time. Yet, they knew that I expected it to be done and in time. I never had to be on them about doing it. They knew to do it. Even still, I believe children should be allowed to be children and have fun. Yet get serious about education.” It was easy to see that at the end of the day, all Ms. Bennett ever wanted was for her children to be happy in what they do no matter what. This also extends to her son Mayor Lucas. “ If he one day wakes up, and says to me that he doesn’t want to be in politics anymore, that would be fine by me. As long as he’s happy with what he does, and I’ve seen people with a whole lot in life, and are not happy.” This is where I learned a little bit more about Ms. Bennett through random subjects off-topic. At this point I felt as if I wasn’t interviewing the mother of a high political figure, but a close family friend whom I haven’t seen since childhood. She could’ve very well been a close aunt or cousin by the way she interacted with me. We found immediately we have some things in common. MAY 2023

We shared stories of our fondness for Converse sneakers, our cat babies, and life lessons learned. As it turns out she’s a lifelong learner just as I am. “I went back to school for my masters degree in higher education and undergrad in liberal studies. I worked at UMKC during that time. I now plan on getting my chemistry degree at 70!” Now for someone who believes that they’re not at all interesting, Ms. Bennett is one of a kind. Not, because of fame, big fortune, or who her son is. But, for being what many of us would call one awesome mom. A mom living a pretty fulfilling life with only one minor change if she could. “I wish I didn’t compare myself to other people when I was younger. Just remember, all of our journeys are different. Forgive yourself, forgive your mistakes, and if you don’t know something ask someone.” www.hifwmag.com

Conquering Poverty Of All Kinds, One Woman's Mission TO DELIVER HOPE .... AND HELP By: Deni Mahoney For many, the hardships of life can harden the heart. For the exceptional few, hardship gives rise to innovation, gathering a likeminded team, and making a powerful impact in the world. For Motivational Speaker Jessica Lynn Speaks Life, founder and President of Giving Hope & Help, this drive and transformative spirit is embedded in her DNA. Jessica comes from a long line of mold breakers who’ve overcome personal hardship to bring real change to their communities. Her great-great grandfather, Harrison McCallop, was born a slave in the American south, fighting with the Union in the Civil War and settling down during Reconstruction in Shawnee, Kansas. There the McCallop family lived and grew when they were confronted with a stark inequity standing in the way of progress. Though there were schools for black children in that deeply segregated period, they were few and far between. What’s more, there was nothing as far as public transportation for black children to take them the long distances between their homes and the nearest school they could attend. Jessica’s great grandfather, R.L. McCallop, turned his farming wagon into a school bus for as many students as could fit. This public service quickly snowballed into a volunteer force of fourteen buses transporting black children, often from different counties, so they could learn and better the lives of themselves and their families. This team of dedicated people serving the community and the next generation formed the first bus service in Johnson County. Jessica’s own journey of service and innovation began in her first year of seventh grade, when she was faced with the reality of period poverty—that is, the systemic lack of hygiene resources for women and girls on their cycle. Even as a young teen, Jessica began couponing and collecting period products for herself and her peers.

As a young adult, Jessica suffered a sexual assault. Like so many other survivors, she felt coming forward would be more harmful than good. A star pupil, she buried herself in her studies and pursued her academic career with abandon. As time passed, Jessica eventually found herself in a relationship wherein she suffered domestic violence, an experience that pained the wounds of her past assault. She credits her personal relationship with Jesus and staying active helping others as the anchors that helped her through these difficult situations. As Jessica puts it, “For everything that you’ve suffered and survived, there’s purpose.” She would soon discover that her experiences and resolve didn’t just have purpose for herself. Driving one day, she felt the Lord impress upon her strongly to inquire at the domestic abuse shelters if they were experiencing period poverty. So strongly did she feel this impression, she pulled over immediately and began researching this question on her phone and looking up the local shelter’s number. As she did she felt the threads of her experiences—difficult and painful that they were—weaving together into a chord of purpose. Her history of helping in places of period poverty and her surviving both being assaulted and domestic abuse all had equipped her, uniquely and powerfully, to address this need. Calling from her pulled over car, Jessica inquired at the local shelter if they had a lack of period products. The woman on the other end exclaimed that this was a universal and pressing problem that shelters face. Before she could think or hesitate, Jessica said “Well I’m going to solve that problem for you.”

Overjoyed, the woman invited her to come take a tour, and (to Jessica’s surprise) insisted she come immediately. The woman asked where Jessica was at that very moment, and when she responded with the name of the seemingly random roadside she was parked on, it turned out she had pulled over directly across the street from the shelter. This divine appointment was the inciting incident that took Jessica to where she is now. “I knew at that moment that it was a God thing. It had nothing to do with me and had everything to do with me being a willing vessel to say ‘yes.’” And thus, Giving Hope & Help was born.
Celebrating 10 years of serving those in need, join Jessica and her team for an evening of impact at the 10th Anniversary and Scholarship Awards Gala, taking place Saturday, June 24th in the Westin Kansas City at Crown Center. A black tie event featuring music, entertainment, speakers and notable guests, the gala will see scholarships awarded to deserving students in the Education Is Your Passport program and fundraising for all of Giving Hope & Help’s important endeavors. Visit GivingHopeandHelp.org for information on tickets and attendance, and how you can get involved helping domestic abuse survivors, women and girls experiencing period poverty, and worthy students of all ages in need of opportunity.
That November, Jessica organized and executed a collection event, partnering with numerous nonprofits to combat both domestic abuse and period poverty. That first event in 2013, humble as it was in the Small Meeting Room of the Kansas City Public Library, resulted in over five thousand units of period products being collected for Hope House in Jackson County. Jessica’s goal at this point was to add a new shelter or organization each year until they covered all of them. Turns out this lofty goal was too small for what they’d achieve. In 2015 alone, they expanded their events and aid from just Kansas and Missouri to shelters in the state of Texas as well, launched the Education Is Your Passport program to help underserved high school seniors get scholarships and graduate, and launched their cancer support program LOVE Bags 4 Cancer. To date, Giving Hope & Help has hosted their tenth annual drive, partners with national organizations to end period poverty, combat domestic abuse, uplift and educate those in need, and edify and aid those battling cancer. So often as believers and followers of Christ we hear, “I’m sorry you’re going through that. I’ll pray for you!” Though prayer is powerful, the word states that faith without works is dead. Jessica is an powerful mold breaker, capturing perfectly this example of Christlike service and care—giving not just hope… but help as well.

Up Against All Odds Turning Adversity Into Triumph By: Mekaile Turner
There is a saying that “Adversity is an oyster.” And, when you think about it, there’s some truth to that.. Oysters live in the muck, and one has to really dig deep in to find one by which only the ones that have suffered physical trauma will yield the most beautiful of pearls. One may not think this way at the moment of a life adversity. Nor do we ever long after. But, for one local Kansas man, adversity in the wake of a tragic accident gave him the courage and strength to help others find their inner pearls of triumph. When Wesley Hamilton was a young man growing up on the Eastside of KCMO, his outlook on the future was a bit dismal at best. “I was always big and short. At 5’4 and 220 pounds, I suffered from self-esteem issues.” This in turn lured Hamilton into a risky lifestyle on the streets. Sadly, at age 24, a simple case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time allowed for him being shot multiple times in the abdomen. This left Hamilton permanently paralyzed from the waist down.

After spending an extensive amount of time in the hospital recovering from that and a stage 4 pressure ulcer that was developed, Hamilton found this to be a golden opportunity he needed to finally turn his life around for the better. “I always saw myself as a student of life, so after recovering from my injuries I decided to go back to school, and earn my GED. Not just for me, but also for my daughter, who calls me her ‘Wheelchair Superman’”. As a part of his rehabilitation, Hamilton took the opportunity to get himself back into shape with regular exercise and making better food choices, such as adding more protein to his diet. This is what inspired him to enroll in a community college and study to become a certified dietitian. In April of 2015, Hamilton launched Disabled but Not Really, a program to help others reach beyond their physical limitations, and live to their fullest potential. “ I’m my program. I act as a traveling physical trainer, helping others who are disabled with workout sessions catered to them, nutrition coaching, and learning to maintain a healthy lifestyle.”

Of course, in addition to physical training and consulting, Hamilton also travels to various school districts and other public venues for his motivational speaking engagements. His main target audience is inner city youths in order to spread awareness of what one can accomplish if they put their minds to it. As well as the consequences of choosing to follow a negative path. Hamilton’s ultimate recipe for a healthy image? “Look in the mirror, and be OK with who you are. Find out what your superpower is, and love yourself anyway.”

MALE MODEL SPOTLIGHT
JORDON THE MODEL THRIVING AS A MALE TOP MODEL [In His Own Words] By: Kennetha Gatlin
HIFW: All right. And here we go. So the first question I have for you is, how did you hear about Heartland International Fashion Week? Jordon: I heard about Heartland, actually, the very first season. I honestly can't remember if somebody reached out to me or if I just happened to like a couple of upcoming posts, but I remember speaking with Bosede, then she was telling me some more about it. And I was just kind of like I’ll see. I met Bosede and she kind of reminds me like my grandmother. My grandma is African, so it was like we were just vibing. HIFW: What modeling?
age
did
you
start
Jordon: So this is a real unconventional thing. I wanted to model since I was a child, but I was too short. I got contracted to do a couple of Adidas shoots at 17. I left for college, but I really hit the ground at....I'd say, 19 to 20 that's when I came back and really started getting into it. HIFW: How has your modeling career been for you, since you started? Have you had any other amazing gigs, or brands? Jordon: I mean, getting stopped and asked if I could do some shoots for Adidas. It was kind of crazy to me.

I was like, oh, this is, wow. But, when it comes to brands, I like some LA brands. There’s Rick Villa, I really like him. He was on one of the designer shows that are usually on Netflix. So, what else I did? Local things here for Go X apparel. There's this brand, a Japanese designer, I worked for his show in 2018, New York Fashion Week and I really enjoyed it. I really thoroughly enjoyed it and that was actually the show that finalized my decision on trying to be a regular model. HIFW: So you mentioned earlier that you were short and I know that in the past a lot of modeling careers take off are 5’7” or above. And usually if you're short, you gotta carve your own niche in the industry. So how does that work for you? Well, first of all, how tall are you? Jordon: Oh, I'm 6’1”. So I'm what needs to be happening. So there's actually a really big misconception. Nowadays, in the modeling industry, you can be of any height. I would say that the only division of modeling that's still very exclusive would be high-fashion runway modeling. Like the higher New York Fashion Shows because they require you to be 5’7” and a certain size for men, a minimum of 5’11”. That's very competitive. I actually appreciate how inclusive Kansas City is. However, I do believe there needs to be a disclosure sometimes, because I've seen a lot of people get very discouraged once they go to New York Fashion Week and don't book anything. In smaller divisions, they're led to believe that anybody can do anything, which is true until you meet certain barriers. Anybody can do anything, but you know, Nate Robinson was short I mean, real, real short. He got into the NBA, you know, he made that happen. But it would have been way easier if he was 6’4”. So there's just some things that aren't disclosed, but nowadays you can be any size, any shape, any color, and be, especially in commercial modeling, which, so where most of the money is anyway.

HIFW: So what challenges have you faced in the modeling industry? Jordon: I'm not gonna lie. I haven't had too many challenges that haven't been based on my location. The only challenge that I really have to deal with is just not living in New York City or living in LA because they're [designers] obviously gonna wanna try and work with the talent they don't have to take money to fly out and stuff like that. I would say as another possible difficulty is, when I first got into modeling, I didn't realize my natural ethnic ambiguity. So I was constantly putting myself up against just black male models, and I was wondering why certain things that I was doing wasn't exactly fitting. I would say I wasn’t what the designers or clients wanted. So I had a sit down and was told you don't fit into like the Black male model box. You fit into the ethnically ambiguous box. Which you can do well, you can actually go further based off of more of the world likes ethnically ambiguous people now. So that was my only difficulty is not being able to identify myself as a model and location. HIFW: So where do you see your career taking off in about five more years? Jordon: We up there! That’s not a doubt. I'm about to move to New York. There’s actually a couple of agencies in New York that I'm talking to sign with. I have contracts in the works that are international so I'm just trying to make it. I would see myself in Vogue, crazy in Vogue. Like being in Vogue once that's cool. I’m trying to be in it every time. That's where I see myself. HIFW: So what challenges have you faced in the modeling industry? Jordon: I'm not gonna lie. This is the main career goal. Jordon: Yes definitely. HIFW: So how do you keep in shape? And how do you keep yourself marketable? Jordon: I'm not gonna lie. Natural genetics has been helping me. I don't do too much. Well, okay, I don't have to do too much. But things that I still continue to do is martial arts training. I've done it for over half of my life. Mainly Tae kwon do. I practice Judo and Jujitsu but mainly Tae kwon do. HIFW: How do you stay true to yourself and authentically you in this industry? Jordon: I’ve never been someone who bends or folds. If you ask anybody who truly knows me, they would call me very hard headed, or a nicer way of saying that is unyielding. I'm very just about my ethics and morals. So if I don't feel like it's something that fits me or what I would like do, I don't care about the opportunity I'll just pass on it and I won't do it. Sometimes it's sad to sit here and be like, oh, well, that would be a good amount of money or a good amount of connections. But you know how the world is now, if you do something that you don't like, it's eventually gonna come back. You're marketing yourself. So that's just something I try to keep in mind while I'm moving forward. HIFW: So what personal style is?
would
you

Jordon: Honestly, I have about five aesthetics. My main two are street casual. But the complete opposite would be, I like, heeled boots. I don't care what anybody says. I'm trying to just pave my own way. Because as a straight man, there's a lot of things that I like, and people are like,“oh.” I'm just doing it. I'm having a great time. And there's been other straight men, who will come up and they'll be like, “I'm glad that you're doing this because it makes me feel like I can do Photographer: Alex Todd

certain things too.” And I'm like, “do you.” But to describe my style, though...fashionably ambiguous but masculine. HIFW: So is there any brands that you aspire to work with? Jordon: Sure, I definitely wanna work with Louis Vuitton and, and I want to work with, Yohji Yamamoto. He goes crazy. I definitely want to work with him one day. When I say Louis Vuitton I mean high-fashion, not the commercial kind. HIFW: All right. So next question is, what is your biggest accomplishment to date in your career? Jordon: I guess it would be being in Vogue. That was cool. It was on their site. I was like, hey, that's still cool though. HIFW: What are three words you would use to describe yourself? Jordon: Independent, determined and dominate. Dominate in a smart way, you gotta know when to hide your presence and when to show it. HIFW: So what kind of characteristics would you say you would have to have in the modeling industry to be successful? Jordon: Definitely, you have to be self confident. A lot of people are outwardly confident and that's fine, but when someone say you didn’t look good in something, now your whole confidence is shattered. So self-confident. A lot of people don't realize there's a lot of research that has to be done into modeling and then how to break through into certain other aspects of modeling. Nobody's just gonna come through with a silver platter like, “here.” And if they do, they're up to no good. Definitely, have to be outgoing and charismatic, because it's about connections. Who knows, someone may just look like a normal person but they actually work with three designers who have been in Paris Fashion Week and you wouldn't know because you didn't talk to anybody.

HI F W : I s t h e r e inspires you.

currently
Jordon: Currently. At this current moment? No, only just because he's doing less modeling. Lucas Abbott, he's more of like an actor, but he was into modeling for a good amount of time, and he still models from time to time. I'm trying to create myself to be my own inspiration, if that makes any sense. If I’m let down by myself, I did it. HIFW: My last question so far is, what advice would you give someone who's wanting to get into the male modeling industry? Jordon: Know your worth, know your presence, know your environment. And then, outside of that, do your research. Be in it for the right reasons. If you're in it just for the money or just for the fame and stuff like that, you're gonna burn out before you even reach any of that. It doesn't just come. Nobody just blows up. HIFW: How do you market yourself? Like your Instagram page? Do you have a Facebook? How do you do, do you distribute your COMP card places? Jordon: So my social media presence is actually kind of trash. I wanna be completely honest. Facebook I use for groups. Whether it's in KC, it's in LA or in New York, there's a bunch of groups. All you have to do is just type in certain keywords, and obviously the location, you'll be able to find a bunch of these groups. You can see how active they are. Join the groups, get interactive. People will post how they're looking for models, or looking for photographers and how they're looking to connect. There's an event going on that you have to be in the vicinity, that definitely helps. Even if you don't go to the events, if you interact with these people, when you eventually do go there, you already have connections. How I market myself on Instagram? HIFW: Well, how do you find your jobs? Or what do you send for designers to see or to use you?

Jordon: First, I like to type in keywords and find brands or designers and industry people and try to follow those type of people. I'll go through their post. If you follow shows, it will host plethora of pictures from either previous designers, current designers or future designers. You can go in and be interactive in those comments. “Obviously, you can't just be like, “wow, nice pic.” Actually give them something they actually want to communicate with. Sometimes you have to solicit. If you go into somebody's DMs and you say this and that, and then you leave, it's just an introduction. You’re getting nothing. That's probably not gonna work for you the way you think it is. When it comes to the shows themselves, I try to make sure that I'm looking for where the location is. For New York Fashion Week, when I went in February, I made sure that I already knew a couple of designers that were doing certain things. I talked to them, hit them up and asked, “Hey you know what shows you doing?” They let me know what they have coming up, castings or tell me where to send in submissions. People don't realize you can use the Instagram search like a keyword finder. I may find specific things, I go in there, take a little picture of it. I compile it, put in some notes. You gotta hit ground and go, they don't do a bunch of online castings. So that's how I do that. HIFW: So what's one thing that you probably change about the fashion industry here in Kansas City? Jordon: I would say. This isn't gonna go over well for a lot of people, but it is what it is. I would honestly change the level of inclusiveness in the fashion shows. Mainly because there's a difference between aspiring professional and wanna-be. I'm seeing a lot of wanna-be. And when I say wanna-be, I mean, people not really putting in any outside efforts. They're just kind of going through the motions. People who are putting in the effort I call those aspiring. Professional is once you're actually getting paid. I'm seeing a lot of wanna be models just getting thrown into things just because they want to have a certain quota of models. Which I understand but it can, sometimes bring down the overall performance of the production. Simply just because some of those people don't have the professionalism that they should when they're at these shows. One other thing would just be to prepare. Have that disclaimer of yes we're inclusive over here of everybody, but just know, in certain other places, it's not as inclusive. HIFW: All right. Well, that's it from my questions. Thank you so much for your time. Jordon: Thank you.

MALE MODEL SPOTLIGHT
HIFW: at what age did you start modeling modeling?
MALE MODEL LIFE TREJEAN'S JOURNEY [In His Own Words] By : Kennetha Gatlin
Trejean: I started modeling when I was 17 or 18. Funny thing is, you guys [HIFW] were my first runway, my first intro into modeling. My brother Jordon [Deleon], was coming to cast for you and I haven’t done any modeling. I was fresh out of high school, and he has been doing it since high school, so he had his foot in the water. Me, I haven’t really done modeling, I never really thought about it. But, it was Bosede who saw me at the casting and looked at me and said, “You’re casting right?” And I was like “What? Oh I was just coming to watch.” But then I said, “Yea, sure.” So, I’m really thankful for Bosede who gave me the first feel of the runway, the introduction. I’ve gone on to do other shows shortly after. HIFW: That’s so awesome that Heartland was your first experience. So what have you done after that first show? Trejean: I’ve been modeling ever since then. I’ve been in local shows, like Kansas City Fashion Week, HIFW, Kritique Fashion Show, Ever since I got the first whiff of the runway I was like, “Oh yes, I like this. This is fun.” So from there I went to different castings, got my networking up, got a feel for everybody, and pursued further to go out of the state. New York Fashion Week and LA fashion week and then Miami, I also did a cruise fashion week as well. So, definitely a lot of fun since then.

HIFW: So one of my questions is there a model that currently inspires you? Trejean: My brother Jordan for sure, not having too much knowledge of the modeling scene, because I have never thought of modeling, so definitely my brother because he was the one that was doing it, he got me into it, and he’s still making moves and I aspire and envy him, he’s definitely inspirational. HIFW: So you have done a lot and you’d been everywhere. So can you tell me what is your favorite brand that you have worked with, and also what is a brand you would like to work with? Trejean: Favorite brands, that I have worked with...I definitely like UJO, I walked for him in the Kritique Fashion Show last season. He has a lot of different colors,
he does street wear, and its....urban jungle. It’s not you typical base colors, it’s the different colors and schemes. It was definitely fun working with him. We did a shoot with him and a runway with him. Let’s see, brands I want to work with, based off my typical feng shui and what I wear, definitely like Nike or Adidas or be fun. HIFW: Which brings me to my question, what is your personal style?
next
Trejean: So i am more of a streetwear, urban streetwear is what I typically wear. I’m trying to broaden my fashion and wear different things. But definitely streetwear, that’s what’s in my closet that I can throw on and it fits me. HIFW: Is there a niche that you’re trying to carve out in the modeling industry for yourself? Trejean: Not one that I have narrowed down on. There’s swimwear, urban, high-fashion, and this is something that I am interested in. And again, shout out to Jordon because that’s what he does is high-fashion and that’s where I got a lot of the interest from. Going from urban to high-fashion is a transition so trying to fit my build and look into high-fashion is interesting. HIFW: Where do you see your career in the next 5 years? Trejean: Five years, I’m trying to get out of Missouri in the next year. After being out in LA and New Yorkand seeing the fashion out there was crazy. So I want to move to where there is more opportunity. Even out of the country in Milan, Paris, and places like that will definitely be a big up. In 5 years I see myself in an area that is more fashion focused. And hopefully pair that up with acting. That was my original intent, was acting. Modeling just kind of happened. So, pairing the two up would be what I want to do. HIFW: What has been one of the biggest challenges you have faced in your career?
MAY 2023

Trejean: Biggest challenge would be....I guess just fitting my build. I’m not the most stockiest guy, but I’m still tall and more broad than people my height, so working with designers with pre-made pieces has been challenging. Like the shoot that we did where It looks like it fits me, but calves might be too tight and I can’t move, pants don’t fit so things like that has been a challenge. I’m not as slim and slender, so when you see 180lbs and 6’2” and you think, ok this guy can fit into it, but like I said my build is a litte different. HIFW: how do you stay in shape for you modeling career? Do you have a rigorous workout routine or is it just luck? Trejean: We are going to say it’s just luck. As much as I want it to be the gym, I can’t lie and say I workout three days a week. I use to be very heavy in calesthetics so that’s body weight training. I was doing that before modeling, throughout high school. So that premade my build. I wish I had stuck with it, but yea, it’s luck. I stay active, I go skating, I do different sports at home too. HIFW: Describe yourself in three words. Trejean: I’m gonna say, optimistic, focused, and driven. Those would be my three. HIFW: When you go to brand yourself, how do you use social media to present your brand as a model? Trejean: So I have oriented my Instagram as my main portfolio. I do have a website but it’s very unpolished. I use the Instagram as the main portfolio. So as I go out to different castings, networking events, I give out my Instagram to designers so they can see my different looks. I’ve done the streetwear and different looks, so it’s a great reference to what I can do. From social media I’ve gotten castings, because they liked my looks so they want me to do ambassadorship or come cast. Definitely use my Instagram as my main portfolio. HIFW: With fashion being so multifaceted, how do you stay true to yourself in this industry? Trejean: I would say how I present myself in castings. I’m really energetic and I talk to people. Jordon and I are always dancing around and we just be ourselves.

And I stay myself throughout the entire process instead of conforming to certain subject that others would want. I represent people who want to be very down to business, and they are working so they would be like, ok it’s fun but let’s focus. But I stay true to myself just by being myself. I take pride in being the guy who’s backstage about to hit the runway and they are nervous but I’m like, “look guys, take a deep breath. You know how to walk, you’ve been walking your whole life, so all you have to do is walk and walk back. It’s all good.” So staying confident and true to personality on and off the runway. HIFW: What was your best modeling experience? Trejean: The cruise I went on. It was my first time being on a cruise, we got to go to Cozumel, MX, US-Florida. I have never been to the ocean like that, so doing those photo shoots in the city of Mexico, and on the coast in Key West, in the structure and shoreline was definitely a highlight of my career. HIFW: That’s awesome to experience that. So it was more than a fashion show on the cruise, was it a whole experience off and on the boat? Trejean: Yes, so it was KCFW Adventures and they booked about 30 models and 7 photographers on a carnival cruise and it wasn’t just us it was others on board too. So we would hit Key West and we all have our different outfits for the in-the-city shots. And we are just going through the city setting up different shoots. I really enjoyed it because it seemed so spur of the moment. You got to let your creative side flourish, because it was just walking around and saying ‘this spot would be dope with your outfit” or “This background would look good with this.” So it was a lot of fun. HIFW: So, do you have any hidden talents? Trejean: I used to dance competitively before I moved to Kansas City. So that’s hidden talent. If you consider this [points to computer setup] I’m actually a nerd, no one knows it. I built my whole system . I have triple monitor setup going on here with camera and lighting. I’m very good when it comes to tech and being analytical. Those would be my two hidden talents. HIFW: Alright, so we made it to the last question. What advice would you give an up and coming mode. Trejean: I actually had a model come up to me to give lessons on how to walk on the runway. I’ve been learning and I soak up knowledge, I'm an information sponge, so I can learn something, understand it, reiterate it and teach others. So I’ve been training him up on runways and poses and since then he’s been on three or four runways. MAY 2023

That was about two months ago we started our first session. So my biggest piece of advice would be confidence. Same for female or male. Having confidence in yourself will show to the camera, audience the designers. Just be confident, that will translate into what you’re wearing because you may be wearing something that is out of your niche, or you’re not comfortable in but as long as you’re confident. Just know you got it, people see something in you and work it. HIFW: That is great advice. Some people do battle with imposter syndrome and think “oh, man, how do I do this, what I can’t get it?” But being confident in yourself helps battle that. Trejean: Yes, because you wanted to be here, you got here and you got what it takes. You’re here for a reason so staying confident in yourself will help. HIFW: Let us know where you can be found and contact you for booking. Trejean: Yea, for booking reach out at trejeanbooking@gmail.com and @trejeanfrieson those are the two main ways. Everything is on my IG, including my website. HIFW: Thank you so much for your time and insights and look forward to seeing you walk in Season 3! Trejean: You’re and thank you!
