MonoMyth

INTRODUCTION

NARRATOR. “I am not unaware that many difficulties beset those who undertake to give an account of the ancient myths, and especially is this true with respect to the myths about Heros. Since in the eyes of many men the very early age and astonishing nature of the facts which are related make the myths incredible, a writer is under the necessity either of omitting the greatest deeds and so detracting somewhat from the fame of the god, or of recounting them all and in so doing making the history of them incredible. For, speaking generally, when the histories of myths are concerned, a man should by no means scrutinize the truth with so sharp an eye.

In the theatres, for instance, though we are persuaded there have existed no Centaurs who are composed of two different kinds of bodies nor any

Geryones with three bodies, we yet look with favour upon such products of the myth as these, and by our applause we enhance the honour of the god.”

“So, we shall leave such considerations and relate these deeds from the beginning, basing our account on those of the most ancient poets and writers of myths.”

“This, then, is the story as it has been given us: ”

SCENE 1

[A scream from far off getting closer… closer… closer… then THUD!]

VITA. Are you okay?

HERO. That hurt.

VITA. Yeah, that was quite a spill you took.

HERO. But that… hurt. I feel pain.

VITA. I’m sure you do. It was almost like you… fell from the sky.

HERO. How is there pain?

VITA. That’s life for you. Where did you even come from anyway?

HERO. I came from - Away. And now I must be away. Thank you for your assistance, mortal, I will be-

VITA. Mortal? Uhh… I’m Vita.

HERO. Yes. Very good. Thank you for your assistance, Vita. I must be -

VITA. And, you are…?

HERO. On my way.

VITA. Very strange. Don’t see that every day.

HERO. Think. How did you get - here? What is this place? Where were you before all this?

WOMAN. Stop that monster!

CITIZEN. Please, help!

MONSTER. Haha Good luck, babe. Who’s gonna help you?

CITIZEN. Please. Anyone?! He destroyed our farm, and now he’s eating the last of our winter cabbages.

MONSTER. They’re tasty, too. Thank you!

VITA. Glad you like them. They can just eat your “Thank Yous” all winter. That will keep them full.

MONSTER. You’re welcome. [Thunder]

PERSEUS. I am here. You may applaud now.

VITA. Great. Which one are you now?

PERSEUS. Which one?! THE one.

CITIZEN. Heracles?

PERSEUS. No. I am the great son of Zeus.

VITA. That could be Heracles.

PERSEUS. I am not Heracles! I am the Sacker of Cities!

CITIZEN. Jason?

PERSEUS. Psssh. He wishes. I am the Slayer of Monsters. Destroyer of Gorgons.

VITA. Mmmm. This one ’ s especially cocky. Theseus?

PERSEUS. Close. But, No! Stop guessing! Listen, Human, I am the-

VITA. Just tell us.

PERSEUS. I AM telling you! I’m the Slayer of the Snake-Headed She-Beast, Medusa.

VITA. None of this “Haver of Titles” blah blah blah. “Mother of Dragons”, “Breaker of Nerves”. Just say your name.

CITIZEN. What is your name, sir?

PERSEUS. It should be obvious - Okay. Fine, I’m Perseus.

MONSTER. Knew it.

PERSEUS. You are in the presence of the mighty Perseus. Cower before me, Beast. For I am your destruction.

MONSTER. Okay, this has been fun. Thanks for the meal. Not interested in dealing with any of … this nonsense. I’m out.

VITA. Great. Well, thank you. The monster’s gone. I guess that’s something.

PERSEUS. I was something wasn’t I?

VITA. Yeah, definitely. Now can you just buzz off. Let us all go back to living our precious, wee mortal lives already?

PERSEUS. Halt! I’ve had enough of your insolence.

VITA. I wasn’t… Okay! I’m sorry. Just, please, let us be.

PERSEUS. I have done you a service. I have defeated the monster.

VITA. Defeated?! You just annoyed it away!

PERSEUS. I have defeated the monster. And demand my reward.

VITA. What?! Even if you had “Defeated” it. We have nothing to give you.

CITIZEN. I have no reward. The Monster destroyed my home, my crops, my whole life’s worth.

PERSEUS. Perhaps you should treat your deities better. Be kinder to your Heroes.

HERO. “Heroes”?

VITA. Oh, so we brought this monster upon ourselves, huh?

PERSEUS. Maybe.

CITIZEN. That’s mine, you savage!

PERSEUS. Sorry ‘bout it.

VITA. You’re a thief! Stealer of Cabbages!!

PERSEUS. The Gods thank you for your offering.

VITA. We need a hero to save us from you, “Heroes”!

ALTOPHOLUS.

HERO. Oi, you. Mortal.

VITA. It’s Vita. I have a name, too!

HERO. Yes. Vita. I need your help.

VITA. Well, you ’ re out of luck, friend. I truly, truly have nothing left to give. The Mob of Olympus just took it all.

HERO. Yes, I saw. That was awful.

VITA. Ugh. I don’t know if Heroes are like that where you come from? Wherever you come from? But ours are all… well, just as charming as Zeus’s pride and joy was.

HERO. Perseus?

VITA. Yeah. The Ruiner of Days. The Pain of Butts.

HERO. I think I know him.

VITA. Lucky you.

HERO. No, I mean. I think I’m like him. I think I’m a hero.

BLACKOUT

SCENE 2

THRAX. Oh, this is bad. This is really bad!

DANIPPE. Calm thyself, brother.

THRAX. How can I be calm! The big guys mean to make war on Olympus.

DANIPPE. The Gods are restless. They are bored. It is nothing to fear.

THRAX. It is war, you Amazon! Not all of us are as fond of war as you!

DANIPPE. And you call yourself a son of Ares.

THRAX. A forgotten son. I don’t have his taste for war.

DANIPPE. War is like the seasons. It is unavoidable. But, none will last forever.

THRAX. It feels like forever for those in its midst. For those lost to the war!

DANIPPE. Life means nothing to an immortal who cannot feel death.

THRAX. You forget, sister. You are not immortal.

DANIPPE. I do not forget. But, I do not fear a warrior's death. Unlike you! Shaking in your immortal boots. What have you to fear?

THRAX. Destruction! Chaos! Fear itself!

DANIPPE. Pfft. Phobos.

THRAX. When the gods get bored, many suffer. Including the humans. Who do nothing to deserve it! Forgive me for having a conscience, Danippe.

DANIPPE. You are soft!

THRAX. Good! I’d rather be soft than callous.

DANIPPE. Yes, well, maybe if the humans would start some more wars of their own, the gods wouldn’t be so bored. The humans have been too quiet, too peaceful. It’s really unlike them.

THRAX. I’m glad of that. The humans are thriving! They have no need of war.

THRAX. WAR

WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING

WAR

WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING (SAY IT AGAIN Y’ALL)

WAR, HUH WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, LISTEN TO ME

OH WAR, I DESPISE

'CAUSE IT MEANS DESTRUCTION OF INNOCENT LIVES

WAR MEANS TEARS TO THOUSANDS OF MOTHERS' EYES WHEN THEIR SONS GO OFF TO FIGHT AND LOSE THEIR LIVES

I SAID, WAR

WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING

WAR

WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING

DANIPPE.

WAR, IT AIN'T NOTHING BUT A GAME

WAR, FOR RESTLESS GODS TO PLAY

OH, WAR, ISN’T ANYTHING FOR YOU TO FEAR SO LET THEM DUKE IT OUT AND LISTEN HERE WAR IS JUST A CYCLE, MY BROTHER, IT'S FLEETING AND YOU ARE AN IMMORTAL SO WHY ARE YOU WEEPING?

OH, WAR

WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING

OH, WAR WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING

THRAX.

WAR! IT AIN'T NOTHING BUT A HEARTBREAKER WAR! IT GOT ONE FRIEND, THAT'S THE UNDERTAKER

OH, WAR HAS CAUSED DESTRUCTION AND PAIN SO FORGIVE ME FOR NOT PLAYING THEIR GAME

LIFE IS MUCH TOO PRECIOUS TO SPEND FIGHTING WARS THESE DAYS WAR CAN'T GIVE LIFE, IT CAN ONLY TAKE IT AWAY

OH, WAR WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, OH, WAR

WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING THRAX.

WAR, IT AIN'T NOTHING BUT A HEARTBREAKER

WAR! IT GOT ONE FRIEND, THAT'S THE UNDERTAKER DANIPPE.

PEACE, LOVE AND UNDERSTANDING, TELL ME IS THERE A PLACE FOR THEM TODAY?

YOU SAY WE CAN’T FIGHT, THAT THERE’S NO REASON BUT WAR IS JUST AS CERTAIN AS THE SEASONS

DANIPPE.

OH, WAR! WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR? THRAX. YOU TELL ME DANIPPE. OH, WAR! WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?

THRAX . YOU TELL ME (ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!)

DANIPPE.

OH, WAR! WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR? THRAX.

YOU TELL ME

DANIPPE.

OH, WAR! WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?

THRAX.

YOU TELL ME (ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!)

VITA. So you have no memory.

HERO. Not really. I just have this feeling like I was searching for something, reaching for something. And then I landed here.

THRAX. Danippe, I didn’t ask you here to debate the moralities of Gods. I asked you here to safeguard our Father’s prized collection.

VITA. You said you were reaching for something.

THRAX. Let’s account for everything in his vault first. [He pulls out a scroll]

VITA. Try to picture what that was. Maybe it will help you remember everything else.

VITA/THRAX. What do you see?

DANIPPE. The Spear of Ares.

HERO. Nothing. No, a glow.

DANIPPE. Ares Godly Helm.

HERO. I’m surrounded by it.

VITA. Think of your other senses.

HERO. I smell… bronze.

DANIPPE. The Cauldron of Otus.

THRAX. Ew, why does he keep that thing?

HERO. My mouth tastes of… sour apples.

VITA. Weirdly specific. Okay.

THRAX. Wait!

VITA. What is it?

HERO. I see it ahead of me.

DANIPPE. It’s missing.

VITA. What is?

THRAX/DANIPPE. The Golden Shield.

SCENE 3 [MUSIC]

HERO.

OH I COME FROM SOMEWHERE UNKNOWN WITH NOTHING ON MY FEET

I’M GOING TO DODONA MY OWN PROPHECY TO SEEK

I’M JUST HOPING FOR SOME ANSWERS SOME THINGS TO CLEAR MY HEAD

CAUSE I’M SURE I AM A HERO OR I MIGHT END UP DEAD

OH DODONA, GIVE ME A PROPHECY

CAUSE I COME FROM SOMEWHERE UNKNOWN AND I’M BEGGING ON MY KNEES

CHOIR.

WELCOME TO DODONA. THE ORACLE YOU SEEK FOR ALL HE KNOWS AND ALL HE SEES, YOUR MAJESTY.

ORACLE. Ahhh. Let me guess… another hero come to seek my guidance for a quest. VITA. Is it really much of a guess if you ’ re an oracle?

HERO. Yes, your Exaltedness. I am a Hero… I think.

ORACLE. But you cannot remember.

HERO. Wow! No, I can’t. How’d you know that?

ORACLE. Hello. Oracle.

VITA. You said “I think.” He’s just deducing…

HERO. Your majesty. I need to know my purpose. What is my quest?

ORACLE. You are searching for something.

HERO. Yes! I am! Wow, you ’ re good.

VITA. Every quest is “searching for something”. He’s not good, he’s just heard of a MacGuffin.

ORACLE. I channel the knowledge of the Gods! Do not mock me!

VITA. You’re a mouthpiece. You’re not all knowing.

ORACLE. You come to me for a reason. You are not at Delphi seeking the counsel of Apollo.

VITA. No. You were closer.

ORACLE. I am also your best shot at knowing anything at all about this Hero you ’ ve found.

HERO. How did he know you found me?!

VITA. Sure. You’re the best! So, will you help us?

ORACLE. I am the Sacred Voice of the All Father, Zeus. I can do whatever I want!

VITA. Great. So, who is he, why is he here, and what do we do about him?

CHOIR. Discontent befits you. You seek a place above the Gold. Your soul will rest among the fields.

VITA. What does any of that mean?

ORACLE. Your questions I have answered. Now I must sleep. Begone!

HERO. “The Fields”, where are they?

CHOIR. Your soul will rest among the fields.

VITA. But then, where is his soul now?

CHOIR. Your soul will rest among the fields.

HERO. Where’s the gold?

CHOIR. You seek the place above the Gold.

HERO. Where is that?

CHOIR. You seek the place above the Gold.

HERO. This is so frustrating!

CHOIR. Discontent befits you.

HERO. Oh, come on!

VITA. These fools are stuck on repeat. We won’t get anything else out of them. Let’s go find these fields of gold.

[MUSIC]

VITA AND HERO

NOW (HE’S/I’VE) GOT UNANSWERED QUESTIONS CAUSE NOTHING WAS REVEALED AND I COME FROM SOMEWHERE UNKNOWN, BUT I’M GOING TO THE FIELDS

SCENE 4

THRAX. This is bad! This is really bad!

DANIPPE. You are plagued by Deimos! Be brave for once!

THRAX. What will we do? If Ares’ shield is missing, the whole of Olympus is at risk.

DANIPPE. Then we will simply get it back.

THRAX. Oh, is that all?

DANIPPE. Of course.

THRAX. We’ll just go find a Deity’s missing Instrument of War even though we have no idea who took it, or where they went.

DANIPPE. Yeah.

THRAX. Okay… yeah. No big deal. Hey, maybe Ares just took it out for a little joy ride.

DANIPPE. Do you want to go ask him?

THRAX. Hades, no! What if he doesn’t have it?!

DANIPPE. Right. So we find it ourselves, put it back. No one is the wiser. And the world goes on spinning, peacefully. Isn’t that what you want?

THRAX. I want peace, yes. But a quest?? No. Not what I wanted.

DANIPPE. A little adventure won’t hurt you!

THRAX. Tell that to Odysseus. Or, Icarus. Or, Oedipus. Persephone. Orpheus. Eurydice. Achilles…

DANIPPE. Quiet! We have arrived. Show yourself, Oracle.

THRAX. Perhaps he is busy.

DANIPPE. Open your doors, Old Man.

THRAX. Or perhaps he doesn’t like your tone.

DANIPPE. Your guidance is required.

THRAX. Could you try asking instead of commanding…

DANIPPE. Your guidance is… required?

THRAX. Please?

DANIPPE. Please!

ORACLE. Oooh. Interesting. A warrior and a minor deity. Don’t see that everyday.

DANIPPE. Tell us what you know.

ORACLE. About what?

DANIPPE. Shouldn’t you already know? Some Oracle you are.

ORACLE. Apollo does not bring me news of your purpose, no. So I have nothing to tell you.

THRAX. That’s okay, Wise One. Thank you for checking. We will go now. Give Apollo our best.

DANIPPE. Stop! We only need to know who has sought your counsel today. And what you told them.

ORACLE. I don’t know anything.

It’s late. Phoebus rests and so must I.

DANIPPE. Try again, Oracle. Think harder.

ORACLE. I think there is a reason you are not with the Oracle at Anatolia… THRAX. Oh no…

ORACLE. I think you do not want your father to know whatever it is you seek…

THRAX. No, no, no, no…

ORACLE. And, I think I have nothing to tell you. Begone.

DANIPPE. How dare you dismiss me?

ORACLE. I should tell your Daddy on you.

DANIPPE. And I should have your head for that!

ORACLE. Ares widdle babies, out on a secret quest to fix a boo-boo. Don’t let Daddy know you made an uh-oh…

[MUSIC]

ORACLE. Goodnight, widdle babies. Sleep tight. Don’t let the War Gods bite.

DANIPPE. Useless, power-hungry, stinking MAN!

THRAX. There are other Seers for us to interrogate. Relax!

DANIPPE. I am relaxed!

CHOIR. Pssst. Oi!

THRAX. Oh, woah! Hey, you ’ re still here.

CHOIR. I know something you don’t know.

DANIPPE. Play silly games, win violent prizes.

CHOIR. Okay, okay. Geez. Listen, I know you ’ re looking for Ares missing something-or-other. We’ve been hearing the other choirs sing, if you know what I mean.

THRAX. No, I don’t know. What does that mean?

CHOIR. Oh, that’s not a metaphor. We literally overheard them singing a prophecy.

THRAX. That’s great!

CHOIR. And I can help you find it. But… you have to help me, too.

THRAX. Of course!

CHOIR. A couple of Ares’ dragons have been stomping around our villages lately. Can you get him to call them off?

DANIPPE. Just spit it out, you washed-up plot device!

CHOIR. Rude!

THRAX. You have my word. The dragons? Gone!

CHOIR. So, a Mortal and a Fallen Hero walk into an Oracle’s Temple…

SCENE 5

HERO. That Oracle was very… unhelpful, huh?

VITA. Seriously. Are they always like that?

HERO. I have no idea.

VITA. Right. The memory. Aww man. We’re screwed!

HERO. Very much so. Yes.

VITA. Well, hey - if this becoming a hero thing doesn’t work out, you could just become an Oracle. All you have to do is make up vague, poetic-sounding nonsense.

HERO. Easy!

VITA. “The sun… ummm… sits down and has, ummm, a cup of ale.”

HERO. Oh, or, “Follow your stomach to the, like, to the food market.”

VITA. “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”

HERO. “You will be okay once you find the missing shield hidden in the Elysian Fields.”

VITA. Wait, what did you say?!

HERO. “You seek the place above the Gold. Your soul will rest among the fields.”

VITA. No, the other thing. “You will be okay once you find…”

HERO. “...find the missing shield hidden in the Elysian Fields.”

VITA. That’s it! Your empty memory banks filled in the blanks. You magnificent weirdo!

HERO. Thanks?

VITA. It’s so clear now! I should have seen it all along.

HERO. You definitely should have. – Seen what?

VITA. You said you were reaching for something and there was a glow. Like a golden glow?

HERO. Maybe… yes…

VITA. And you smelled bronze. Like, the stuff weapons are made of??

HERO. Yeah, and just about everything else. It is the Bronze Age.

VITA. But, you tasted sour apples.

HERO. Yes, and I remember because that was oddly specific.

VITA. Right. That’s an omen, foreboding.

HERO. Sure, I guess.

VITA. Who do you know that has a thing for apples, weapons, and - oh I don’t know, what did you say - shields??

HERO. Oh my Gods, it’s Ares.

VITA. Exactly! Ares and his Golden Shield!

HERO. “Your soul will rest among the fields.” Heroes retire to the Elysian Fields in the afterlife!

VITA. “You seek the place above the Gold.” The Golden Shield must be buried there!

HERO. Okay, so then what’s the whole “Discontent befits you”?

VITA. He could tell you were really mopey, or something. I don’t know! The important thing is that we know what we ’ re looking for and where.

HERO. Yes! And now HOW do we get there?

VITA. Good question. Hmm… I think we ’ re going to need a Monster.

INTERMISSION

ACT II

ENTR’ACTE

NARRATOR. “This, then, is the story as it has been given us: ”

The great demi-god, Heracles, having been cast out of Olympus, was brought up by his mortal mother. While only a suckling babe, his natural vigour amazed the gods. With a single strike, the infant defeated two serpents set upon him by Hera. His fates were aligned to great glory. Heracles came of age, and achieved his full strength. But, not all could believe the truth of Heracles’ power.

The king of Argolis, suspicious of the young hero, called Heracles to his side and commanded him to perform 12 impossible Labours.

When Heracles refused, Zeus imposed his word upon the hero. The gods had decided that Heracles should perform the labours as commanded. Heracles saw that it would be impossible not to obey Zeus, who was his father as well. Upon conclusion of these labours, Heracles should receive the gift of immortality.

He made up his mind to undergo these dangers.

The second Labour which he undertook was the slaying of the hydra, springing from whose single body were fashioned a hundred necks, each bearing the head of a serpent. And when one head was cut off, the place

where it was severed put forth two others; for this reason it was considered to be invincible.

Heracles devised an ingenious scheme and with a burning brand seared the part which had he severed.

When he had subdued the animal by this means he dipped the heads of his arrows in the beasts venom, in order that when the missile should be shot the wound which the point made might be incurable.

“After the performance of these 12 Labours, Heracles established the Olympic Games, dedicating these Games to Zeus the Father. The gods gave reply that Heracles should be taken up in a great pyre, and with him his armour and weapons of war.

The Greeks, therefore, performed the offerings to Heracles as to a hero. By holding up as an example for all other men to follow their own reverence, they induced all men throughout the inhabited world, to honour Heracles as a god.”

SCENE 6

DANIPPE. There. The other one flew off. But the humans’ precious village is safe from the fire-breathers. Happy?

THRAX. No! Not at all! You slayed the dragon? Why did you do that?

DANIPPE. Because that is what one does when they are battling a monster. You slay them.

THRAX. You could have just chased it off. Ares will be furious!

NYMPH. Yeah, he’s going to be so mad… Then again, he can just get Echidna to whip up another one

DANIPPE. I’ve made good on your promise to the humans. We’ve wasted enough time. Let us go catch this “Hero” before he uses the Shield for some nefarious purpose.

HERO. You do understand, I am no Heracles. I am not even that great buffoon Perseus. I can’t be sure, but I have a feeling I have no achievements to speak of.

VITA. Yeah, I know. We have a lot working against us. But, we can get you those achievements. You can be a real hero. High score, baby. Stay positive!

HERO. And you ’ re sure this Gorgon will be no match.

VITA. Well, I mean. Our other option is Typhon. But, I didn’t think you’d want to dive into the deep end. So, yeah. A gorgon. Easy peasy.

THRAX. Pardon me. I didn’t mean to eavesdrop.

VITA. But, you did anyway…?

THRAX. Yes, I guess so. Sorry.

NYMPH. Eavesdropping. How rude!

THRAX. Did you say you ’ re looking for a gorgon?

HERO. Yes, we are. Because I have to prove I’m worthy of being called Hero so I can reach the Elysian fields and find-

VITA. -his happily ever after. That’s all. Nothing special going on here.

HERO. What are you doing? These strangers wanted to hear all about our exploits. I’m becoming famous.

VITA. Yeah, no. Strangers don’t just take interest in other people unless they want something.

THRAX. Are you thinking what I’m thinking?

DANIPPE. That I could probably beat Artemis in an archery contest?

THRAX. No, not even close.

DANIPPE. I bet I could.

THRAX. Focus, for one second. Do these travelers seem … familiar… to you?

HERO. What could they possibly want from us?

VITA. Mmmm… I don’t know… maybe just information that could lead them to … you know what…

HERO. What, the Golden Shield?

THRAX. See! There, he just said it!

VITA. Shhh! Keep your voice down.

DANIPPE. That’s the lost hero we ’ re looking for!

THRAX. Finally, on the same page.

DANIPPE. Quick, bash his head and kill the woman.

VITA/HERO/THRAX. What?!

THRAX. Not on the same page. We are not on the same page.

DANIPPE. I’m tired of this Fool’s Errand. Hero, what is your name?

HERO. I haven’t a name.

DANIPPE. Do not bore me with your lies. I’ll get the truth from you sooner or later.

THRAX. Please, do not make matters worse with your temper!

HERO. I have no name. Or, at least not one I can remember.

VITA. Just spill all the beans to these strangers, then, why don’t ya.

DANIPPE. Enough!

VITA. He’s not lying. He has no memory. So whatever it is you want, he can’t help you.

DANIPPE. He can help me greatly!

THRAX. Danippe, no!

THRAX. Think wisely, sister. You cannot win every battle by force!

DANIPPE. Says who?

THRAX. Says the look on that frightened hero’s face! He will not help us if he is afraid of you.

DANIPPE. So what do you propose?

THRAX. We work together.

DANIPPE. I do not work with mortals. Or, men. I have no need of them.

VITA. Except, you do. Lady, you really need to work on your whispering skills.

THRAX. She’s right.

DANIPPE. What?!

THRAX. That you need him. We need them. They have the prophecy.

HERO. You’re looking for the shield, too.

DANIPPE. Maybe…

THRAX. Yes, we are.

VITA. Why would you need it?

DANIPPE. That is none of your business.

THRAX. We mean to prevent global catastrophe.

VITA. Oh, is that all…?

HERO. We will help you, Travelers!

VITA. A quick word, Hero?

HERO. No need. They seek the Golden Shield - so do we. Together we will find what we ’ re looking for.

VITA. You aren’t the least bit worried about this catastrophe they speak of?

DANIPPE. You know, we Amazons have an elixir - just one drop, and he’ll spill all of his secrets.

THRAX. You are such a brute!

HERO. Whatever catastrophe - they mean to prevent it.

VITA. All I know is - one Gods’ catastrophe is another human’s jackpot. Think about it… all Prometheus wanted to do was share a little fire with humanity.

HERO. But the Gods wanted to keep that knowledge for themselves.

VITA. Uh, yeah. And, now look at him! I like my liver, okay? I’d very much like to keep my liver, thank you very much.

DANIPPE. I’ll knock him out. We’ll take him back to Themyscira. Quick as Zeus’s lightning, we know everything we need to know!

THRAX. Silence!

No. Trust me for once. My way is better. Peace is better.

This is the way. We know you have been given a prophecy. And, without that, we will never find our Father’s cherished shield. Please. Help us. For peace ’ s sake.

[MUSIC]

THRAX.

I HAVE CLIMBED HIGHEST MOUNTAINS I HAVE RUN THROUGH THE FIELDS

SCENE 7

VITA. Was I only asleep? Because I feel like I just slept in my own grave.

THRAX. Is that what sleep feels like?

VITA. I mean, usually it’s more pleasant and involves more dreams of Ambrosia and fountains full of drachma. At least for me.

THRAX. I do not like this feeling. My head is a fog, and my armsthey feel like anchors.

VITA. Yeah. This is why I never have more than one amphora of wine.

THRAX. We had no wine last night.

VITA. Hold on a minute. You’re not Hero!

THRAX. Where is Danippe?

VITA. Ack! What is this?!

THRAX. I have one, too. Danippe!

VITA. I knew I should have kicked her butt last night when I had the chance.

THRAX. We were poisoned. And Hero absconded. You really believe you could have fought an Amazon?

VITA. No. But I could have tried!

VITA. Hey! Where do you think you ’ re going?

THRAX. Where do you think! Back to Olympus. In shame. To take whatever punishment my father Ares chooses to lay upon me.

VITA. You Olympians are always such drama queens.

THRAX. The hero is gone. The prophecy with him! There is nothing to do but quit.

VITA. You give up that easily?

THRAX. Yes!

VITA. Do whatever you want, coward. But, I can’t do nothing.

THRAX. So what’s your plan? Find the Amazons? Alone?!

VITA. If I have to!

THRAX. Even though no mortal has willingly found the legendary city of the Amazons.

VITA. Minor detail.

THRAX. Or, that this city is said to lay beyond the boundaries of this earth.

VITA. I’ll figure it out.

THRAX. You can’t! You won’t!

VITA. I must! Because my friend is alone and I am his only hope.

THRAX. Okay. What do we need to do?

VITA. We?

THRAX. Yeah. I guess - What I mean is - I can’t let you do this by yourself.

VITA. Can’t let a mortal show you up?

THRAX. No. Just, if you can be brave, then, I can be brave, too.

VITA. Thanks.

NYMPH. Awwwww… that’s so sweet.

THRAX. How long have you been spying, nymph?

NYMPH. Ohhhh, not long. Just since you left Olympus to find the shield and got booted from by the Oracle and then killed that poor dragon and ran into an amnesiac hero and his mortal friend on the road and then the Amazon drugged you and you woke up here without the Amazon or the Hero…

THRAX. Okay, okay, okay. VITA. We get it. It’s been the whole time.

NYMPH. Anyway, the way I see it, you only have two options.

THRAX. And those are?

NYMPH. Quit.

VITA. Not happening.

NYMPH. Or, you ’ re gonna need a monster.

VITA. Woah, is that the poison dart, or am I having deja vu?

THRAX. A monster? For what? We’re not looking for the shield anymore. Well, not really.

VITA. Not really at all. We just need to save our friend. My friend. And, I don’t see how a monster can help with that.

NYMPH. It’s simple. The real currency of Olympus is your “worth”. Proving you are “worthy” of greatness. And the best way to prove it - is to slay!

THRAX. No, no, no! I’m not a fighter.

VITA. I don’t want to hunt down another living being just to murder it, either.

NYMPH. But, it’s a monster. Don’t shed too many tears.

VITA. Says who? Who decides which beasts are monsters, and which ones are worth protecting? I bet if you asked the deities on the mountain, they’d call us humans monsters.

THRAX. They certainly don’t bat an eye at the thought of slaying you.

VITA. Right, so who am I to make that choice for another creature.

NYMPH. Ah, but you have no quarrel with your livestock. Do you not eat them?

VITA. Yes, when we need to. For food, for survival. We don’t need this.

THRAX. I hate it. But maybe we do… need this?

NYMPH. Is this not a matter of survival? The survival of your friend?

VITA. Yes. But, no. There has to be another way.

THRAX. I can do this.

VITA. I know you can but do you have to?

NYMPH. Here we go again, another round of pontificating. Holler for me in an hour when you two are ready for me to do my whole “Deus Ex Machina” routine.

THRAX. No offense, but… I’m the only immortal here. So, if anyone has to risk their life, it should be me. The one who doesn’t really have anything to lose. …right?

NYMPH. Great! Now are you ready for your contenders?

VITA. Wait, what’s in it for you, Nymph? How do we know you ’ re helping, and not hurting?

NYMPH. I like to see the good guys win.

THRAX. And…?

NYMPH. And, nothing.

VITA. Yeah, right.

NYMPH. Okay, fine. And, I’m hoping you’ll put in a good word for me with your old Uncle Poseidon. I hear there’s a sweet opening for a new Sea Nymph over in the Aegean. I want in. I’m sick of all this land and greenery. I’m drying out.

THRAX. Okay. Lead us to a monster. One that really is a - problem that needs to be - dealt with. And, I’ll put in a good word for you. 5 Stars. Best Nymph I’ve ever known.

NYMPH. Deal.

[MUSIC]

THRAX.

DANIPPE. Quit your crying, hero. This could all be over if you just tell us why you stole the shield.

HERO. I didn’t steal it!

AMAZON. He lies!

HERO. I am not lying. I don’t think. No! I know I’m not. I may have no memory, but I know that I am not a liar.

DANIPPE. The shield is missing and Ares will have your head for this loss!

HERO. I was trying to find it! After it was stolen. I’ve told you all I know. Truly, everything.

DANIPPE. See, that cannot be true. You want me to believe you fell to this mortal realm with no memories but you just felt like you had to go looking for something?

HERO. Whether you believe or not, it is the truth.

DANIPPE. What was the prophecy given to you at Dodona?

HERO. That, I do know.

DANIPPE. So spit it out!

AMAZON. Out with it, man!

HERO. You are not giving me much reason to trust you. Tied like a hog, beaten and bruised.

DANIPPE. We haven’t even started to unleash our greatest furies on you.

HERO. I have been charged with finding Ares’ Golden Shield. To keep this realm safe from the warring Gods.

DANIPPE. Just sing that little ditty the oracle gave you, and we will take care of that shield.

AMAZON. No problem.

HERO. You are Amazons, are you not? Daughters of Ares. Women warriors.

DANIPPE. This we know well.

AMAZON. We do not need you to tell us this.

HERO. So why do you need me, a lowly man, to tell you how to find it? Go fetch it. Destroy every village along the way until you have what you want. What do you care?

AMAZON. Because of the prophecy.

DANIPPE. A refresher on prophecies, boy: Once it has been told, it must happen. The Fates cannot unweave their tapestries.

HERO. Wow. I finally understand.

DANIPPE. Yes!

AMAZON. Say it!

HERO. My friend. Vita. I thought she was just afraid of everything. She was not. She was wise - not to trust you, “The Mob of Olympus”.

DANIPPE. Enough of this! Get the dram.

HERO. What is that?

DANIPPE. Just something for you to drink. That will bring the truth to light.

AMAZON. The Elixir of Aletheia.

DANIPPE. Sure, there can be some… unwanted consequences. Like, drowsiness. Nausea. Spontaneous combustion.

AMAZON. Nothing to worry about.

DANIPPE. You will be fine. Just don’t… fight it. Give into its influence. There you are. Let Aletheia’s words escape with your breath.

[MUSIC]

HERO.

WHEN YOU WERE HERE BEFORE COULDN'T LOOK YOU IN THE EYE

I WISH I WAS SPECIAL

BUT I'M A CREEP

WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING HERE?

I DON'T BELONG HERE

I DON'T BELONG HERE

DANIPPE. That - that meant nothing to me.

AMAZON. Was that it? Was that the prophecy?

VITA. No, that was his truth.

DANIPPE. Where did you come from? How did you get here?

AMAZON. A human? Impossible!

VITA. It was a whole journey. How about you just give me my friend, and I can tell you all about it some other time.

THRAX. Danippe, this is wrong. Let him go.

DANIPPE. Brother, you caught up. Congratulations!

THRAX. Why do you always have to fight against - everyone? We were going to work together. There was no need to go through all of this. You’ve only made everything harder.

DANIPPE. I’m the only one still trying to help!

THRAX. Help who?

DANIPPE. Ares! Our father. Hello, what has this whole thing been about?

VITA. And here, I thought all of this was about us. All of us. And you. Danippe?

DANIPPE. Yes?

VITA. What do you want?

DANIPPE. The shield.

VITA. And now, what do you really want?

THRAX. What are you doing?

VITA. Trust me.

DANIPPE. What do I really want?

VITA. The shield, yes. But that’s just a symbol isn’t it. There’s more here. There’s more in you.

DANIPPE. I want to keep his favor. Ares, my father. He has so many children. It is so difficult to get his attention. Just once, I want him to be proud of me. Just once, I want him to call me by my name, and say “Danippe, I am proud of you. ” I know, I’m supposed to be tough. I am tough. But that does not mean I don’t feel love, too. I do feel. You are right, Vita. There is more in me. I have feelings. And I want to share them.

AMAZON. Wow!

VITA. I hear you, Danippe.

DANIPPE. Thank you.

VITA. Thrax, what about you? What were you actually searching for?

THRAX. I think I already found it.

VITA. That’s great. Would you like to share?

THRAX. No. But, thank you. Thank you for helping me to find it.

HERO. I know what I want. #1 - to be cut free.

DANIPPE. Yes. Yes, of course.

HERO. And, #2. I want to know what is going on? The shield is still missing.

VITA. Yes, probably. But I realized just now. You were never searching for the shield.

HERO. I wasn’t?

VITA. I heard your lament. Then, and now, you were reaching for the shield but it's because you were really trying to find something else.

HERO. My worth.

VITA. Your worth.

DANIPPE. How is she doing this? What is this power she wields to draw out the truth without violence. Without even an elixir?

AMAZON. Witch!

THRAX. She must hold some godly power.

VITA. No. I don’t have any secret power or witchcraft. I justlisten.

HERO. You heard me?

VITA. And I care. Slaying a monster, finding a shield. That is not what makes us worthy. No one gets to decide our own worth except for us.

CHOIR. Discontent befits you.

HERO. I never felt like I belonged up there. On Olympus. So many gods and heroes walking around like they owned the place. And I had no quest. No trials to prove myself. I hadn’t even earned my own armor. So, I thought, maybe I need to make my own way. But I couldn’t leave unprotected. So I was just going to borrow my uncle’s shield. My uncle.

THRAX. Cousin?

CHOIR. You seek a place above the gold.

HERO. I’m not a thief. I was just so lonely. I had no friends because I had no purpose. Or, I thought that’s why. But maybe it's because everyone there was just too selfish to have real friends. They may not mind being alone with themselves. But, I did mind.

CHOIR. Your soul will rest among the fields.

HERO. I went to the vault, but when I grabbed the shield. It rejected me, too. Repelled me with such force. I landed among the mortals.

CHOIR. Your soul will rest among the fields.

HERO. I found you.

VITA. Just a human living my wee mortal life amongst the cabbage fields.

HERO. And, boy did we go on quite a journey, huh.

VITA. Epic.

[MUSIC]

CHOIR.

BUT I'M A CREEP

SCENE 9

VITA. Don’t work too hard, Erasmus. You’ve already helped replace more of these fields than we could have ever done ourselves. Heroic strength. Comes in handy!

HERO. Ah, about that… heroic strength.

VITA. I’m listening.

HERO. Just because I can remember my name, doesn’t mean I still l like my name.

VITA. Ah, I get it. So what’re you thinking? A new fun, made up name. Something silly, like… I don’t know. Bob?

HERO. No, I actually, I was thinking just “Hero” has a nice ring to it.

VITA. Yeah. Hero. I like it.

NYMPH. Good work today, Thrax. You’re getting strong.

THRAX. Thank you. I feel good. Strong.

NYMPH. You are! Remember: There are many ways to show strength.

THRAX. And a million ways to be brave. I know. Thank you, Coach.

ARES. Here she is! My favorite. Small but mighty. And quite gorgeous if I do say so myself.

DANIPPE. I am happy to see you pleased, Father.

ARES. Very. I can’t believe you thought my girl was missing! No one could steal her from me.

DANIPPE. Yes, silly me, Father. Well, I’ll leave you to your things.

ARES. Danippe?

DANIPPE. Yes?

ARES. I know she was safe, but I also know the hell you went through - thinking she was gone - fighting to bring her back anyway. I do not envy the man who faces you in battle. Thank you for your quest to find her, Dani.

VOICE. Vita of Corfu. You have shown yourself worthy through great acts of strength and cunning. You may now take your place amongst the Pantheon of Heroes atop the-

VITA. No, thank you.

VOICE. What?

VITA. No, thank you. I’m good.

VOICE. But, you’ll be a hero - gifts of riches and powers untold.

VITA. I’m all set. Here, with my friends. Thanks, though!
