There’s an argument for effective synthetic nutrients versus natural nutrients for holistic health, both cognitive and physical, but benefits to both, especially if people do not practice a balanced diet of whole foods.

Natural nutrients are obtained from whole food sources in the diet, whereas synthetic nutrients are usually made artificially, in an industrial process.

Those are not exactly the adjectives you would expect to be uttered by someone who has lung cancer and just completed chemotherapy and immunotherapy for lymphoma last July.

Sams also has heart complications, eliminating him as a candidate for surgery to remove the cancerous tumor on his lung, which was discovered when he was treated for his initial cancer diagnosis. Yet the lung cancer is early stage, making him an excellent candidate for Stereotactic Body Radio Therapy (SBRT), a form of targeted radiation that’s now available through OSF’s investment in the most current technology to treat early stage cancerous tumors.

Sams was the first to receive the treatment at the Moeller center, of which he has no regrets.

“I was lucky to be the first,” he said. “I was special.”

The formerly active U.S. Marine, now retired as a long-time utility worker, said he looks forward to having his treatments compressed and done in less than two weeks, rather than six to seven weeks.

Moeller Cancer Center radiation oncologist Dr. James Piephoff said targeted radiation involves the use of sophisticated image guidance that pinpoints the exact, four-dimensional location of a tumor so that the radiation can be more precisely delivered to cancer cells.

Adapted from the central nervous system stereotactic radiosurgery, the technology is a treatment technique that has been used to treat brain tumors for more than 50 years. The primary difference is that SBRT is used to treat tumors throughout the rest of the body.

“It allows us to deliver a more effective dose, which has a better probability of controlling the cancer compared to the daily radiation treatments that are often given five days a week for anywhere from two weeks to up to nine weeks,” Dr. Piephoff explained.

Imaging technology and development of a customized immobilization device helps ensure individuals undergoing treatment are in the same physical position for every session, and that the target area does not shift during treatment.

Dr. Piephoff explained that planning takes respiration into account, as well as how a tumor and other surrounding tissue might move as a person breathes. In some

cases, radiation beams during treatment will be intermittent to deliver radiation only when the tumor is in full range.

“The radiation beam turns off and on at the precise time to hit the tumor, but then turns off when the tumor moves out of the area,” Dr. Piephoff said.

Sams said he felt comfortable during the third of five sessions, each lasting about one-half hour to 45 minutes, and occurring every other week day. No anesthesia is required. Dr. Piephoff said that because SBRT is so precise, it can lead to better outcomes and fewer side effects than conventional radiation therapy.

“Higher dose to the tumor is obviously better to eradicate the cancer,” he said. “By being able to be precise, we are able to limit the radiation dose to the uninvolved, good normal healthy tissues.”

SBRT’s most common side effect is mild fatigue. But Sams said he hasn’t had any side effects, so far. The Samses admitted it was a blow

to hear that surgery was not an option. But they found immense hope when they learned about targeted radiation and that its outcomes were comparable to surgical removal of a tumor.

The couple felt God guided their journey to OSF HealthCare, they said.

“If you have a fatalistic attitude, they pump you up here and bring your attitude up,” Carol Sams said.

Larry Sames noted that OSF is doing everything it can.

“That’s all I want,” he said.

When he finishes radiation, he’s scheduled to have a cardiac defibrillator implanted to treat his irregular heartbeat, as the journey continues. The couple envisions a future of enjoying each other and life’s simple pleasures in Kampsville. They look forward to traveling to see family and a return to favorite pastimes, such as fishing and nature walks.
