Venture WEST MICHIGAN

West Michigan in its entirety has so much to offer, whether it is history you are into, food and local cuisine, outdoor activities from hiking to cycling to antique shopping in towns that make you feel you are shopping in the past.

Throughout the following pages you will learn about all of what there is to do and see from each of the nine counties across the region.

In one day, you can take in the view of Lake Michigan while in Benzie, Manistee or Mason counties. For example, visit Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, one of the state’s most popular areas to visit.

Head southeast and you are in Lake County where history is plentiful. Visit the Lake County Historical Society in Baldwin and learn about Andy Horujko who walked over 12,000 miles to shine light on automobile pollution. If you’re looking for live music, Idlewild is home to some great soul festivals.

In Osceola County, home of Reed City, there is the historical Depot where live music can be enjoyed for free to arts and craft events, good for all the family. Stop in and visit the city of Evart that is nestled along the banks of the Muskegon River.

Speaking of the Depot, it sits along the Fred Meijer White Pine Trail State Park, a rails-totrails project that offers 92-miles of pristine views.

Heading south along the Muskegon River you will find yourself in Mecosta County where history of logging is celebrated. Downtown Big Rapids has its farmer’s market on Fridays along with free concerts in Pocket Park, to name a few.

We hope you enjoy our spring edition of Destinations. It is an honor to have you take in what we call our backyard.

Thank you,

Darren Iozia

SPARTA TOWN & COUNTRY DAYS

Sparta’s 83rd Annual Sparta Town & Country Days will take play May 1619 this year which is a major change after 30 years

The festival has been held for the last 30 years in July, but due to many logistics and obstacles, the board of directors made the decision to move the event to May which coincides with the spring carnival for Sparta.

“It is always hard to change a beloved, long-time event, but with the options that were available, the board of directors feel confident this will be a great move for the community long term,” said Elizabeth Morse, Downtown Development Director for the Village of Sparta. “The spring-time event coincides with the last week of school for our senior class, and I keep picturing the last day of school in “Grease” the movie, where the students run out of the school and head to the carnival! But mostly, the

board was pleased that we were able to keep the annual event and make it work in a different time of year!”

The annual event will feature some of the home-town favorites such as the Grand Parade on Saturday, May 18, the Sparta Lions Famous Chicken Dinner, and the Skerbeck Family Carnival which will have new, expanded ride selection due to a shift in the location to Balyeat Field in Sparta. Sparta Events Coordinator Beth Baltruczak said, “We’re excited to enhance our traditional festival feel, with a Farm Night, which will have dozens of businesses hosting kids’ activities such as cake walk and duck pond.” The Farm night will be in Rogers Park on Thursday, May 16 in Rogers Park in Sparta. “There are a ton of traditional events like a dog show, petting zoo, live music, just a fun night to come out with family”.

More details on the festival can be found at Spartachamber.com

As visitors explore the area during Thursdays on the Square,

they’re invited to discover hidden treasures, find the perfect gift for a loved one, or simply treat themselves to something special. The event creates a vibrant synergy between music, community, and commerce, reinforcing the importance of supporting local businesses and artisans. It’s a wonderful opportunity for residents and visitors alike to experience the essence of Sparta’s entrepreneurial spirit while enjoying a delightful evening out.

CONCERTS IN ROGERS PARK

Sparta’s Concerts in Rogers Park series takes place in the idyllic setting of Rogers Park, a beautiful downtown park known for its playground, splash pad, and adjacent restroom facility. This family-friendly environment adds to the charm of the concert series, providing a space where people of all ages can enjoy the music while taking advantage of the park’s amenities.

One unique feature of the Concerts in Rogers Park series is the Restaurant Raffle, an exciting addition that offers attendees the chance to win over $500 in Sparta area restaurant gift certificates. The raffle not only adds an element of fun and anticipation to the events but also serves a meaningful purpose as all proceeds from the raffle go directly to support the Event Series, ensuring that future concerts and community gatherings can continue to thrive.

With the combination of live music, a scenic park setting, family-friendly activities, and the opportunity to support local businesses through the Restaurant Raffle, Sparta’s Concerts in Rogers Park series makes each Wednesday in Sparta a memorable and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

White Pine Trail from Howard City (pictured) to Cadillac will remain open through mid-summer, at which time portions from M-46 to M-20 will periodically be

White Pine Trail open amid construction delays Portions to close after July to repair culverts

WEST MICHIGAN — March winds and April showers, bring forth months upon months of hiking and biking on the White Pine Trail.

Running from Comstock Park north to Cadillac, the former Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad has been providing transportation options of a human-powered sort for almost three decades.

However, last year, nearly a quarter of the 92 mile trail (23.9%) was blocked off while construction crews paved the final portion, or at least that was

the plan.

“Last year, 22 miles were supposed to get done, and that would be from Howard City to Big Rapids, essentially to M-20,” said Paul Griffith, vice president of the Friends of the White Pine Trail. “About 17 ½ miles got done, so we’re a good 90% to 95% done.”

Construction crews ran into some issues.

“Down by M-46 (in Lakeview), if you go north a

half a mile, last summer a front-end loader went in into a culvert,” Griffith said. “Now, it wasn’t the equipment or the operator’s fault; it was a bad culvert and so it collapsed.”

Griffith said they are replacing the old culvert with a new bridge.

Another problem occurred in Big Rapids at New Millpond Road.

“When they were putting in a base coat of

asphalt last year — I think it was probably October — a sinkhole developed,” Griffith said. “A sinkhole means there’s a hole in the culvert, which is obviously not good.”

That culvert will be replace.

Cost to fix the unanticipated issues will top $1 million, which includes the engineering, the design, the manufacturing and installation of the bridge and culvert, Griffith said. Once the DNR secures more funding, the project can move forward.

But those aren’t the only repairs.

“About two miles (from New Millpond Road) is another bad culvert, except that one does not need to be replaced. It just needs to be repaired, and they end up having an issue with that,” he said. “That should have got done last year, and there were some complications.”

Griffith said the Michigan Department of Natural Resources had to change its approach in repairing the culvert, which will require a redesign, which will require approval from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, which will take time.

The good news is the trail will remain open until then.

“The whole trail is going to be open for probably at least ‘til July, maybe August,” Griffith said.

At that point, two sections will be closed — a 2.5 mile section between New Mill Pond Road and Angling Road and a 1 mile section from M-46 north.

“When they get the paving down, they also need to fine grade the shoulders,” he said. “They need to plant grass kind of thing or vegetation.”

Crews also still need to do the intersections from Stanwood to Big Rapids.

“They put a base coat and a top coat (of asphalt down), and then they go back, and about 10, 12, 15 feet from the edge of the road, they will cut a straight line,” he said. “They will form it for like wire mesh and pour concrete and put ADA tiles.”

Once the intersections are compliant with the American Disabilities Act requirements, the crews will finally be able to install stop signs and other finishes.

When will that be done?

“We really don’t know at this point,” he said. “But the intersections don’t have any impact on whether you can ride through it. (Crews have) just not done the finished work on that. So, that’s a good section of trail that is open, that was not open last year.”

Buying rural or urban? Know the di erences

The decision to move is a very personal choice that is typically reached after considering a number of variables. Career opportunities, a better climate, superior schools, or a desire to be closer to family compel millions of people to move each year, and those

are some things buyers should know. Here are some di erences between purchasing a home in a rural or urban location.

URBAN

factors underscore how unique each individual move can be.

The average American moves 11.7 times, while no move is a small undertaking, and when such a move involves relocating to an entirely new setting, there

A vibrant lifestyle and proximity to employment draws many people to urban living. Home prices tend to be higher in cities than in other areas, and the cost of living in urban areas tends to be more expensive due to the conveniences associated with city life. Buyers may expect to pay more for contractors, food and transportation. Property taxes are another consideration for urban buyers. Taxes tend to be

higher in urban neighborhoods than rural locales.

Proximity to nightlife and restaurants attracts many people to live in cities. Urban buyers need to expect more congestion in cities than in rural areas. Having a car in the city may be a luxury instead of a necessity. In fact, many urban dwellers opt for public transportation rather than paying for parking or trying to nd spots.

Noise may be another thing to think about. More people living closer together brings more noise and arti cial light. Nature lovers may have to sacri ce prox

RURAL

REAL ESTATE DIRECTORY

Internet coverage.

Being able to spread out and enjoy private property is a major advantage of living in the country. Rural living comes with much larger home footprints at more a ordable prices.

Potential buyers will need to account for distance to jobs and stores when opting to live in rural areas. Commute times can eat into fuel budgets. Those who work from home may need to investigate if there is reliable Internet service where a home is located, as some rural locales still have spotty mobile service and

Additional things to think about involve the maintenance on the home and utilities. Some rural homes are not connected to municipal water systems. That requires usage of well water and having to do one’s own water testing. It’s also key to have a septic system tested to ensure it is in good working order. Rural residents may need to grow accustomed to slower repair times should electricity go out, so a backup generator might be necessary. Also, snow removal may fall on the homeowner, so buyers should look closely at driveway size and road access before buying.

Nature and vast starry skies draw some to live in rural areas. Sitting outdoors enjoying the sounds and smells of nature can be intoxicating. But homeowners must consider that insects and animals may be frequent companions in these areas. Those

accustomed to urban living may be unacquainted with animals living so close to their homes. Both rural and urban areas can be great places to live. Individuals should consider the pros and cons of each before buying a new home.
