West Shore Community College Academic Advisor

What do you enjoy most about your job?

What I enjoy most about my job is working directly with students, learning where they are in their journey, helping them navigate higher education, and encouraging them as they discover who they are and what they can achieve. It means a great deal to me to serve people from the same community I grew up in. I’m also incredibly grateful to work alongside a supportive and dedicated team at West Shore Community College.

How did you get into this field?

I completed both my undergraduate and graduate degrees at GVSU. During graduate school, I held a twoyear assistantship in the Center for Undergraduate Scholar Engagement. I was the Fellowships Graduate Assistant and supported the Office of Undergraduate Research. That experience sparked my passion for working with students and deepened my commitment to higher education. I was fortunate to learn under exceptional mentors and leaders who helped shape my path supporting students.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

Find people who do this work well and learn as much as you can from them. Be adaptable in your approach and meet students where they need support. Do your work with enthusiasm and humility, and always be open to learning from the

students you serve. Working in higher education can be incredibly rewarding, especially when surrounded by the right people. And if you have the chance, do it at an institution where you were once a student!

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life?

I believe it’s important to find things in your personal life that fulfill you so you can bring your best self to your work. Maintaining a healthy balance also means understanding and embracing boundaries, and being open and clear when communicating expectations. Prioritizing both rest and purpose outside of work helps me stay grounded and present in my professional role.

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you offer to others?

My role models have taught me the value of supporting one another and leaning on your team. The work is more effective and far more meaningful when you’re doing it alongside like-minded people. They’ve also shown me the importance of fully embracing who you are and that being your authentic self is the most powerful and honest way to do this work. For others, I would say: find your people, be yourself, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

I enjoy reading, traveling, spending time in nature, going for walks, and sharing time with family. I’m also a big fan of a good cup of coffee, whether part of a quiet morning routine or catching up with someone I care about.

What community organizations do you volunteer at?

Since moving back to Ludington less than a year ago, I haven’t yet established a consistent volunteering routine as I’ve been focused on settling into my role. However, during my time in Grand Rapids, I regularly volunteered with foodrelated organizations, which was deeply meaningful to me. I hope to get involved with a local food bank or community market here in the near future as I continue to reconnect with the community.

What makes our area unique from other places you have lived?

Mason County has a strong sense of community and the people genuinely support one another. There’s a small-town environment that feels welcoming and connected. I also enjoy being so close to Lake Michigan, with all its natural beauty and outdoor opportunities.

What is the most important challenge that our community needs to address? One of the most important challenges our community faces

Mecosta County Park Commission

HR, Marketing & Events Manager

Age 22

What do you enjoy most about your job?

My favorite part of working for the Mecosta County Parks is the opportunity to engage with the local community in a way that not only fosters engagement with the natural environment, but also benefits the overall health and wellbeing of Mecosta County residents. Being a witness to the community’s excitement regarding the parks continues to inspire me and my work every day.

How did you get into this field? I’ve always had a passion for the environment and the outdoors, which has inspired my career in various ways. I received my B.S. in Sustainable Business from Aquinas College in May of last year, prior to returning to the Mecosta-Osceola area to begin my professional career. The position with the parks was recommended by a client of a family member, given my background in sustainability and climate communications, I applied for the role and the rest is history. I’m glad to be where I am.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

My biggest piece of advice to someone pursuing a career in this field would

be to take ownership of your own story. There are so many avenues to choose from when searching for a role in parks and rec; from city parks and private campgrounds to sprawling national parks, you can craft a career that you’re proud of, built on your own passions and experiences. There is no one size fits all in this industry.

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life? I prioritize my work/life balance by doing my best to completely disconnect from the job on my days and evenings off when possible. I also try to spend my time off in the outdoors visiting other parks and green spaces because, while our eight locations are beautiful, I find it beneficial to continue that separation on my own adventures.

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you offer to others?

I think the biggest lesson I’ve learned from role models throughout my life and career has been to be proud of the work I’m doing, especially during periods of time where I am feeling demoralized or unsure of whatever situation I may be experiencing. I would offer similar guidance to others, always keep your head up and produce great work; the pieces will fall into place eventually.

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

Some of my favorite hobbies include dispersed camping, hiking, swimming, reading, and cafe hopping.

What community organizations do you volunteer at?

I have previously volunteered with Friends of Grand Rapids Parks, Kid’s Food Basket, the Aquinas College TerraCycle Program, and multiple nonprofit environmental organizations through clean-ups and other community events in West Michigan.

What makes our area unique from other places you have lived?

I find the West Central region of Michigan to be unique in the sense that it offers a small-town Northern Michigan atmosphere, but also offers close proximity to amenities and opportunities in Grand Rapids, Mount Pleasant, and other hubs of activity in the state.

What is the most important challenge that our community needs to address?

I think the most important challenge for our community to address is the lack of ecological engagement amongst our youth. It is more important now than ever to inspire

TOP 20 UNDER 30 OVERALL WINNERS No. 3 Belle Whipple

Belle’s Coffeehouse Owner

Age 21

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy the people I work alongside and the memories we share serving our community.

How did you get into this field?

I started with an image of what I would want a business to look like - how I wanted to be treated, how I wanted to treat/lead a team, how to provide quality over quantity. The passion for coffee was the “why” behind the how.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

Always start with kindness and patience. If you treat everyone – your health inspector, delivery drivers, plumbers, electricians, partners, employees, and customers – with equal respect and kindness you will set yourself up for success in the long run.

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life?

The cafe is downtown so after work I like to run my errands, then go for a nice long walk to wind down. I look forward for that time to blow off steam, reset and refresh for the next day.

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you offer to others?

My role model is my mom! She has taught me how to have a crazy work ethic that I never had before. I can only

have that work ethic if I’m maintaining good mental health - so make sure to not stretch yourself too thin. Create boundaries, time off when you need it and treat yourself once in a while because you earned it!

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

I love going on my walks listening to music! On the weekends I go cafe hopping (like bar hopping but coffee) typically in Grand Rapids.

What community organizations do you volunteer at?

I currently am a 412 Youth Leader for my local church!

What makes our area unique from other places you have lived?

I used to live in Alaska, so I love to see a bustling downtown scene that I’m not used to. The DBA and city work hard to keep the area clean and decorated and offer as much as they can for families and visitors.

What is the most important challenge that our community needs to address? Though so many businesses are popular with locals and well established, they are missing targeting the college students that are so close. I hope to soon see spots that students frequent other than bars.

What does it mean to you to receive this award?

Receiving this award means a great

deal to me. It shows me that no matter how exhausting, time consuming and stressful owning a business can be, it is ultimately for something bigger than myself which is my community and that is really a greater feeling than any award.

What other professional achievements have you received?

In late-December, I was awarded Entrepreneur of the Year from the Big Rapids DBA and our cafe won two categories (Best Coffee Shop & Best New Restaurant) in the Pioneer Group All-Area Readers Choice.

What is your next career goal?

We are coming up on our one year anniversary and I am excited to launch a rebrand. This will include a new logo, new art concepts and new merch! I believe we have a special concept and amazing people that can bring the vision to life that I originally wanted to do from the very beginning.

How do you hope to inspire the next generation of young professionals? Running a business doesn’t have to be so scary! I am only 21 and don’t have all the answers. I wish I had peers my age running similar businesses but that can be difficult to find. I hope to be an open book and honest if anyone needs to ask for help!

What do you enjoy most about your job?

What I enjoy most about my job is bringing life into the world. It is such a special moment for the Mom and Dad and I’m so thankful I get to be a part of it with them. It is an experience that I can’t even describe.

How did you get into this field?

I took my prerequisites at Mid Michigan Community College and that’s also where i completed my nursing degree. The Mecosta-Osceola Career Center was a huge part of my journey. If it wasn’t for the CNA program and their support and also my parents’ support I’m not sure I’d be where I am today.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

What I would say to someone trying to pursue this career is to go for it. It is hard and challenging but 100% worth it. Nursing has given me so much purpose in my life. I love the team I work with. I’ve never once regretted being a nurse. So definitely go for it and put your mind to it.

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life?

I keep a healthy work-life balance by continuing to do the things that I love to do. Going on vacation, being with my fiance and family. I work night shift so it’s challenging and I do miss a lot of family events. But the three 12-hour shifts are nice.

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you

offer to others?

My role models are my parents Rick and Tatum Ulrich, my biggest supporters. They have taught me good things take time and to go for what you want in life. My parents are great role models because they have not only shown me but have taught me that hard work in life always pays itself back.

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

Some hobbies I enjoy are going on the boat, camping, golfing, and snowboarding. I enjoy doing anything outside.

What community organizations do you volunteer at?

I don’t volunteer at any organizations, but I’d love to look into it.

What makes our area unique from other places you have lived?

I’ve always lived in Big Rapids. I’ve of course traveled to other places, but Big Rapids has always been home. Everyone is friendly and nice here. I also love it here because l’m close to all my family.

What is the most important challenge that our community needs to address?

The most important challenge that our community needs to address is how divided the world is. So the main thing we need to address is the diversity for not only the United States but also our community.

What does it mean to you to receive this award?

To receive this award means a lot to me. I’m young and driven and have worked

very hard for my degree and what I have. I feel I set a good example for our younger generation to go for what they want in life. It’s not going to be easy but good things come with time and if you work for it the accomplishment is so much greater than you could even imagine.

What other professional achievements have you received?

Some personal achievements I have received are Daisy Awards at work. Those are one of the best awards to receive. It shows me how much of an impact I truly have on someone’s life.

What is your next career goal?

Right now I currently don’t have a career goal. I just want to enjoy my life and job and just soak it in. Right now I see myself continuing to work as a labor and delivery nurse for a long time. I’m really happy and content where l’m at in my life bringing sweet babies into the world.

How do you hope to inspire the next generation of young professionals?

I hope to inspire the next generation to work hard and always show up to work on time, ready to learn and ready to be a team player. It’s one of the most important things in life. Having parents that set that example for me I’m super fortunate to witness but not everyone has that or sees that. So to the younger generation: Be the hard worker that shows up every day ready to learn and ready to make a difference in lives.

Reed City Group

Supply Chain Manager

Age 27

What do you enjoy most about your job?

What I enjoy most about my job is the opportunity to collaborate with my team to solve complex challenges. Each day presents a new problem to tackle, and I thrive on the creativity and critical thinking that’s required to find solutions. It motivates me to continually improve and innovate in my role and keeps me engaged. I also enjoy my time spent mentoring team members and helping them in their professional growth.

How did you get into this field?

My father has been a part of the manufacturing industry for over 40 years, and his dedication inspired me to explore opportunities within the same field. During high school, I seized an opportunity to join the company as a co-op student in customer service. This experience ignited my interest in the industry and also laid the foundation for my career by allowing me to gain hands-on experience and understand the intricacies of supply chain in manufacturing.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

For anyone considering a career in manufacturing, I would advise embracing opportunities to take on diverse projects and responsibilities that intrigue you, even if they push you beyond your current expertise. This willingness to explore new areas not only broadens your skill set but also accelerates your professional development. Being open to learning and adapting can

significantly enhance your career trajectory and contribute to personal growth.

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life?

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance for me involves proactively setting boundaries at the right times. During vacations I prioritize fully unplugging by using my do-not-disturb modes and focusing on personal well-being and quality time with family and friends. Recognizing the importance of recharging allows me to return to work with renewed energy and productivity.

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you offer to others?

My role models have taught me the importance of integrity, continuous learning, and perseverance. They’ve shown me that success often comes from dedication, resilience, and a willingness to learn from setbacks. The guidance I would offer to others is to stay curious and embrace challenges as opportunities for growth.

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

I enjoy spending quality time with family and friends, exploring new travel destinations, and playing card games. I also enjoy spending time with my dog on walks and scenic car rides. These hobbies help me unwind and stay in the moment outside of work.

What community organizations do you volunteer at?

I serve as a board member for our local public school, where I contribute to supporting education and community engagement. Additionally, I participate in an annual spring cemetery cleanup.

What makes our area unique from other places you have lived?

Although I have only lived in this area, I believe what makes it unique is the exceptional access to outdoor recreation activities in nature – such as trails, rivers, and lakes. At the same time, being close to urban centers like Grand Rapids and Traverse City offers the perfect balance of natural beauty and city amenities. This blend creates a special environment in West Central Michigan perfect for both relaxation and convenience.

What is the most important challenge that our community needs to address?

The most important challenge our community faces is the lack of sustained investment in infrastructure, education, and economic development. This can hinder our growth, limit opportunities for residents, and impact our ability to attract new businesses and talent. Addressing this challenge requires a collaborative effort to prioritize strategic investments that foster innovation, improve public services, and create a more sustainable community for the people here.

What does it mean to you to receive this award?

Receiving this award is a humbling honor.

What I enjoy most about my job is the opportunity to make a positive impact on children’s lives. I love being able to support their growth both as individuals and as members of a community. Watching them develop friendships and form meaningful connections truly warms my heart and reminds me of the importance of what I do.

How did you get into this field?

I turned my lifelong passion for dance into a career! After outgrowing my local, small, childhood studio, I wanted to keep dancing and share that love with younger dancers, creating a positive and inspiring space for them to learn and grow.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

Opening a dance studio is an exciting and rewarding journey. It’s a chance to share your passion for dance, inspire others, and build a community. While it requires dedication, planning, and hard work, the impact you can have on your students and your local area makes it all worthwhile. Make sure to stay true to your vision. Don’t be afraid to start small, and remember that every challenge is an opportunity to grow.

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life?

I define clear work hours and stick to them and communicate these boundaries to my staff and students so expectations are clear. I prioritize time for family, hobbies, and self care. I also use planning tools to organize my schedule, set priorities, and

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you offer to others?

My role models, especially my dance teacher, have taught me the importance of placing core values like faith and family at the heart of my work and community. What is your next career goal?

My next career goal is to continue growing and enriching my dance studio by expanding our programs, reaching more students, and fostering a welcoming, family oriented environment. I aim to develop new classes, improve our community outreach, and create opportunities for students to excel both artistically and personally. Ultimately, I want to make a positive impact in my community through dance and serve as a role model of faith, dedication, and passion.

Osceola County Sheriff’s Department receives Impact Award

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, staffing levels at the Osceola County Sheriff’s Department were critically low. Sheriff Mark Cool was struggling to cover road-patrol shifts to ensure the county was adequately being served.

“When I became sheriff, staffing levels were pretty low. We were down five openings on the road,” Cool said. “We keep 24hour coverage for our road patrols, and at the time it was tough on our staff. My undersheriff and I were known to work a shift or come in for a few hours of coverage here and there just to maintain coverage on the road.”

Because several other departments in the high-demand public safety industry were facing similar hiring challenges, Michigan Works! West Central established the Public Safety Careers Council of West Michigan. This initiative, part of the Sector Strategies – Employer-Led Collaborative (formerly the Michigan Industry Cluster Approach), aims to address the staffing needs of first-responder agencies across the region. The collaborative was formed to help attract, train and retain talent for police, fire and EMS agencies in Lake, Mason, Mecosta, Newaygo, Oceana and Osceola counties.

To address the critical staffing shortages faced by agencies like the Osceola County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan Works! West Central partnered with the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards

(MCOLES) to create a training pathway for road patrol officers. State funding for this collaboration supported trainee wages, benefits, and tuition at the West Shore and Kirtland community college police academies.

Sheriff Cool and Under Sheriff Jed Avery immediately saw value in the program and got involved. For its successful efforts to bring the department up to full staffing levels, the department was selected by Michigan Works! West Central to receive a 2025 Impact Award, which honors those who have contributed to strengthening Michigan’s economy by actively creating jobs and developing fresh talent in their communities.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Department received the award April 24, at a ceremony in Lansing. Each year, 16 Impact Awards are presented to individuals and employers from around the state.

“Through this program we have been able to help the Osceola County Sheriff’s Department develop a pathway to advance the careers of some of those who have dreamt of a career in law enforcement but were unable to make that leap for different reasons,” said Shelly Keene, Michigan Works! West Central Executive Director. “This employer-led collaborative has been incredibly successful! In the past three years, a total of 18 individuals have completed law-enforcement training from seven different

police agencies. We also have been able to help seven individuals complete paramedic training from four agencies in our region.”

Thanks to this initiative, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Department was able to train seven road patrol officers and become fully staffed, saving the county more than $70,000 in training expenses. The department also sponsored an additional two trainees at academy utilizing other funding sources.

“Our retention rate is 77 percent with the individuals we’ve sponsored,” Cool said. “The reason for the high retention rate, I believe, is we’re valuing that employee and we’re giving that person a chance to better themselves at basically no cost to them. … Without the funding (from Michigan Works! West Central), the county couldn’t have taken on that financial responsibility. I really think that this has just been a huge benefit for our staff. This partnership has been amazing.”

No. 12 Marilyn Tebar

Arbor Circle

Youth Prevention Coordinator

Age 27

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I am passionate about serving my community, particularly in working with youth. They hold a special place in my heart and represent a vital part of our community’s future. I value the opportunity to be a source of support and guidance for many of these young individuals.

How did you get into this field?

I have always felt a strong desire to help others, though I initially wasn’t sure how to channel that passion. When I learned about the role of a social worker, I immediately recognized it as the path I wanted to pursue. During my internship, I found myself naturally connecting with youth, which solidified my goal of focusing my career on supporting and empowering young people.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

Social work is a multifaceted profession that evokes a wide range of emotions. It can be challenging, as the desire to help everyone is often met with limited resources. However, entering this field offers profound opportunities for personal growth and a deeper understanding of the world around you. Social work is deeply rewarding, and it allows you to make a

meaningful difference in people’s lives – often in ways both big and small.

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life? Working within a close-knit community can make it challenging to separate work from personal life, as I often encounter clients in everyday settings. Despite this, I find joy in seeing familiar faces and being part of the community. Maintaining healthy boundaries is a core value that I prioritize and one that Arbor Circle actively promotes. I have established clear and respectful boundaries with both colleagues and clients, and I’m grateful that these have been consistently honored.

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you offer to others?

My role models have taught me valuable lessons, including the importance of setting healthy boundaries, managing life’s difficult moments, and appreciating the small joys that life offers. In addition to applying these lessons in my own life, I share them with the youth I work with – reminding them that it’s okay not to be okay and encouraging them to take life one day at a time. I emphasize that perfection is not the goal, but progress and self-compassion are.

What are some hobbies you enjoy? Recently, I’ve returned to a place where I

can once again enjoy activities I used to love, such as taking walks and playing disc golf. Over the past couple of years, I’ve also developed an interest in traditional golf. I’m an avid video game enthusiast, and my family and I make time for monthly game nights and LAN parties. Overall, I enjoy exploring new hobbies and experiences whenever I can.

What community organizations do you volunteer at?

I make an effort to volunteer whenever my schedule allows. I’ve participated in medication takeback events across multiple counties and have also supported food drives in partnership with TrueNorth Community Services. 1,300 ninth graders enjoy hands-on career exploration at annual MiCareerQuest West Central

From virtual welders and screw-gun races, to learning CPR and trying on firefighter turnout gear, students from 20 local high schools got to take part in dozens of hands-on activities to learn about high-demand career paths available in west-central Michigan.

An estimated 1,300 ninth-graders from across the region participated in the sixth-annual MiCareerQuest West Central event hosted by Michigan Works! West Central. The event provides local students the opportunity to meet and speak with local industry experts to learn about what it takes to get into their industry. The annual event was held on April 30, inside Ferris State University’s Wink Arena.

Seventy-eight employers and training providers provided students with hands-on activities in four different sectors – healthcare, manufacturing and in-demand careers such as skilled trades, as well as programs available at regional training providers, including CDL training, aviation maintenance school, college programs and more.

“MiCareerQuest provides every ninth grader in our region with direct access to engaging and interactive exhibits, handson activities, and conversations with industry professionals,” said Shelly Keene, Executive Director at Michigan Works! West Central. “We specifically invite ninth graders, so they have the opportunity to adjust their high school coursework if a career

showcased at MiCareerQuest captures their interest. It’s so important for them to realize the wide variety of opportunities available within our region. Our goal is to spark their career curiosity and get them thinking about their life after high school.”

Platinum sponsors for this year’s MiCareerQuest West Central were Clear Water Services of Ludington and the West Michigan Plumbers, Fitters & Service Trades Local 174.

The West Michigan Plumbers, Fitters and Service Trades union, has participated in MiCareerQuest West Central every year since it began in 2020. Union Organizer Johnny Ortiz took part in this year’s event. He enjoys helping students understand more about being a plumber/pipefitter and learning about their five-year apprenticeship programs.

“MiCareerQuest is just phenomenal. It actually gets the students involved,” Ortiz said. “Maybe college isn’t right for them, but with all the different booths setup here, there’s a lot to learn about. If college isn’t right for you, we want to educate students and say, ‘Hey, there’s another avenue, and that’s (the apprenticeships) we represent.’ I would absolutely, 100 percent positively recommend MiCareerQuest to anyone – students and employers. It’s a great, great program.”

Michigan Works! West Central successfully launched its inaugural MiCareerQuest West Central in 2020, just before the

COVID-19 pandemic came to Michigan. Adapting to virtual formats for two years, the event resumed in-person activities in 2023, and has seen a consistent increase in exhibitor participation each year. Impressively, in its first six years, MiCareerQuest West Central is estimated to have provided nearly 11,000 ninth-grade students across the six-county region with valuable insights into high-demand local career and educational pathways!

“MiCareerQuest is such a great experience. It’s our largest event of the year, and it wouldn’t be possible without the commitment of our staff, volunteers and participating exhibitors. The coordination is extensive, but the reward is seeing students’ excitement when they discover new interests,” said Jonathan Eppley, Communication and Marketing Manager for Michigan Works! West Central. “Our aim is to connect the next generation of workforce with the wide variety of high-wage, high-demand career options and affordable education paths available right here in our region.”

Michigan Works! West Central has service centers in Lake, Mason, Mecosta, Newaygo, Oceana and Osceola counties, and offers a variety of services to both employers and job seekers. MIOSHA

MIOSHA Safety Officer

Age 25

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I really enjoy being able to see the many industries Michigan has to offer. Going into places is like a game of, “How It’s Made.” No two days in the field are the same. I also really enjoy learning and talking to people. One of the biggest parts of a career like this is people skills. Not everyone is comfortable with having a conversation with someone who was a stranger five minutes ago. As a MIOSHA Safety Officer, we have the opportunity to help educate before we regulate.

How did you get into this field?

I was hired as a Corrections Officer for the Oaks Correctional Facility in Manistee, Michigan five months after graduating high school. While there, I obtained my bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration. I also did a short stint as a Child Protection Services Investigator in the Grand Traverse tri county. I transitioned to Workplace Safety because I wanted to do meaningful work that impacted people like me, people like you. I want to help Michigan Workers return home safely.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

Do it. I came from a Criminal Justice background, some come from safety, others come from

manufacturing. There is no clear-cut path to becoming a MIOSHA Safety Officer, but it does come from work experience and education. There are colleges that offer Environmental Health and Safety Majors in the state and a few that MIOSHA partners with. Most people we know go to work every day, MIOSHA’S goal is that they return home the same way they left.

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life? Calendars. I have a Microsoft Teams calendar that is piled high MondayFriday 8-5 with work. I think open communication with management is crucial. You can’t give your best effort if you are running on a quarter tank. Now, my wife and I share a Google calendar that she keeps very busy for me while I’m not working.

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you offer to others?

Not everything happens for a reason. Sometimes things just happen. E+R=O. Events plus your Response equal your Outcome. That means that you cannot control the events that life throws your way, the only thing you can do is respond to them. If your response is positive and impactful, the outcome may not be as bad as originally imagined. Most importantly, be yourself. Sure, maintain professionalism in the workplace, but being human and giving a smile can go a long way.

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

I enjoy spending time with my family. I have a beautiful wife and daughter, and we are expecting a baby boy in September! I enjoy being outside. My favorite hobbies are deer hunting and river fishing. Our house gets pretty loud during the Detroit Lions games too!

What community organizations do you volunteer at?

I would say this is the area I would like to improve in, personally. I used to volunteer my time with Pine River youth wrestling and football, but I have not been able to give much time lately.

What makes our area unique from other places you have lived?

If you put a thumb tack in Tustin, Michigan, I have only ever life approximately 20 miles away from the pin. I have stayed in hotels for extended periods of time in more urban settings for training. In the Thumb, there’s farms, in the North there’s rivers, in the south there are towns, on the West are sandy beaches, and on the East you have elevation changes. Where I’m from, we have it all.

The industry is demanding and every day is different so it’s super helpful to go into each shift with a flexible and positive mindset!

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life?

It is very difficult. I miss a lot of special events, holidays and hangouts in my personal life because of the industry’s demand for weekend work. I try to stay busy on my days off during the week to make up for my inconsistent schedule.

What have your role models taught

My role models have taught me the value of hard work. My first hotel boss, Ann, has always led by example and I have heavily respected the way she carries herself. No. 17 Rose Brannigan

Fremont Area Community Foundation

Philanthropic Services Associate

Age 24

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love connecting with others and learning their stories. There are so many incredible generous people who are extremely passionate about giving back to the community they love. It is an honor to be a part of that process and see the changes firsthand. The donors of Newaygo, Lake, Mecosta, and Osceola Counties have made major impacts to enhance the quality of life for all their residents. Thank you for every gift and your continuous support! We are very grateful.

How did you get into this field?

I graduated Augusta University in Georgia with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, and then, I moved to Michigan. Honestly, I knew little about nonprofit operations because I studied journalism, television broadcasting, and public relations in school. However, with the amazing opportunity the Community Foundation has provided me, I have fallen in love with these tightknit caring groups of people that have allowed philanthropic opportunities to thrive around every corner.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

I highly encourage it! There is no better way to do something so purposeful and important than to rally others and address the greatest needs within your community. With time, talent,

and treasure, an unstoppable force of good is created for necessary change. For example, each of our counties has a Youth Advisory Council to support youth needs. After learning the importance of nonprofits, it is great to teach, spread awareness and empower our youth in philanthropy and its community importance.

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life? It can be difficult to keep a balance when you care so much about what you do. I find personal strength by continuously aiming for my best at work and striving to love all those around me whether they are family, friends, neighbors, community members or coworkers. Work never ends. There is not a punch clock for what is right and needs to be done. Someone has to do it, and I am willing to learn, try, fail, succeed, and keep moving forward to make the world a better place.

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you offer to others?

There are so many role models in my life. I have amazing parents, 8 loving siblings, great friends, wonderful coworkers (past and present), and many more loved ones that surround and support me every day. I am extremely blessed. Some life advice I recently heard at a scholarship awards ceremony would be the instruction to do three things: learn something new every day, smile about it, and make sure

to laugh too.

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

West Michigan has made me love all outdoor activities. I have learned to garden, backpack, and camp just to name a few. Every season has so much to offer. This last winter, I was able to snowboard for the first time. Surprisingly, this Georgia girl is already looking forward to snow.

What community organizations do you volunteer at?

I have volunteered at True North Community Services’ food drives in Fremont. Also, l am planning to aid Love INC in Grant with their Rooms of Refuge program for the homeless of Newaygo County. I mainly volunteer at my home parish in multiple roles. I sing in the Sunday choir, help with the youth ministry, work church events, and I plan to volunteer at our school daycare program.

What makes our area unique from other places you have lived?

Augusta, Georgia is a large city which is quite different from these 6 counties of West Michigan. I am amazed by the intense community involvement that can be found here. People seem to know everyone, everything, everywhere. I think the community

Age 27

What do you enjoy most about your job?

My job comes with many challenges, but what I enjoy most is witnessing our organization’s growth in real time. A lot of plans, exciting projects, and an amazing team, along with an increase in impact, are what make the job worthwhile. What inspires me even more is seeing how our community continues to show up for OBK through generous volunteer hours and financial support even during difficult times.

How did you get into this field?

With a passion for helping others, I began my studies in Human Services. As I delved deeper into interviewing skills, I realized that I didn’t want to do direct service work long-term. During that time, I became a student leader and gained hands-on experience in nonprofit management through internships. That’s when I discovered a love for leadership and the dynamic challenges of wearing multiple hats. A year after earning my associate degree, I stepped into a program director position.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

To get the most out of a human services career, it is important to explore and learn about all the different niches you can get into. Once you have explored the different avenues and have experience in them, it is going to be easy to focus your attention on the population or the setting you would like

to work in. Volunteerism, networking, and internships go a long way.

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life?

In my experience, keeping a healthy balance between work and personal life comes down to boundaries. When you’re going to work, you have to be focusing on work and leave personal things behind. When you are home, you focus on what you have going on at home. If you are oncall, then you have to empower your team with the knowledge and confidence they need to handle issues that might come up.

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you offer to others?

One of my previous supervisors told me to get comfortable being uncomfortable. Practicing this saying only helped me gain new skills; from being extremely introverted to being a commencement speaker, from having a fear of heights to going skydiving (just a check in my bucket list). You may have a fear of gaining certain skills, but once you’re in the moment, you’re going to do just fine.

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

I enjoy getting to know new cultures through their food, playing the best sport there is, which is soccer, singing, traveling, and spending quality time with my wife and family.

What community organizations do you volunteer at?

I have not had the chance to volunteer locally just yet. However, I have volunteered in the past at Almost Home Humane Society, feeding dogs. I volunteered at the Red Cross, sound the alarm event. I volunteered at Lafayette Urban Ministry for their Jubilee Christmas event, helping host a family. I also volunteered at NAMI as a board member.

What makes our area unique from other places you have lived?

I enjoy being in nature, so it is nice to have the parks and the river in this community.

What is the most important challenge that our community needs to address?

Homelessness is one of the most pressing issues in our community. It is common to see communities look away from it to maintain a sense of comfort or safety. But homelessness isn’t just someone on the street asking for help, it affects families with newborns, veterans, seniors, and people with disabilities who are struggling to survive in a tough economy. I didn’t know homelessness was that big of an issue until I sat down with some folks at a local shelter and learn about their stories.

Wexford County Civic Center

Event Coordinator

Age 21

What do you enjoy most about your job?

As an event coordinator, one of the most rewarding aspects of my role is the opportunity to work with a diverse range of individuals and organizations within the community. Whether it’s coordinating birthday celebrations, vendor expos, or high-profile functions like the Governor’s Breakfast, I take pride in collaborating with local businesses and community leaders to bring their visions to life and ensure the success of their events.

How did you get into this field?

The Wexford Civic Center has always been a “”second home”” to me. Growing up, both of my brothers played hockey so I spent a majority of my time there. I started volunteering at a young age and became an official employee at the age of 14. I was 19 when I took over the position as Event Coordinator.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

I would tell them that a career in event coordination can be incredibly fulfilling, especially if you enjoy working with people and bringing ideas to life. It requires strong organizational skills, adaptability, and a genuine passion for helping others. No two events are the same, so you’ll constantly be learning and growing. If you thrive in fast-paced environments, enjoy problemsolving, and take pride in creating memorable experiences, this industry can be both exciting and rewarding.

How do you keep a healthy balance between

your work and personal life?

It can be extremely difficult having a healthy work-life balance. When being in a managerial position you are constantly working. It takes intentional planning and boundaries to achieve. I have learned that taking care of myself not only benefits my mental health but allows me to show up better for my clients.

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you offer to others?

From my role models, I have learned resilience, determination and leading with a purpose. I have also learned the importance of staying true to your values and learning to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. To others, especially those just starting out l’d say: Be willing to put in the effort, stay humble, and build genuine relationships. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, take initiative, and learn from every experience – good or bad.

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

I enjoy spending time with my friends and family. We spend a lot of time outdoors having bonfires, swimming, and going on day trips. During my alone time, I enjoy reading and going on hikes.

What community organizations do you volunteer at?

Currently, I am apart of the Cadillac Area

Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Class of 2025. Combining this with full time work, and school I do not have a lot of time for volunteering at extra organizations. However, I do help the Chamber with miscellaneous events and plan to expand my volunteering efforts this summer! My short-term goals are to find a board to serve on and become a Chamber ambassador to increase my community outreach and efforts.

What makes our area unique from other places you have lived?

Having lived in Cadillac my entire life, I’ve come to truly appreciate what makes our area so special. What sets our community apart is the strong sense of connection and support among organizations and local businesses. There’s a genuine spirit of involvement here – people come together to make things happen, whether it’s through local events, volunteer work, or supporting small businesses. That kind of collaboration and pride in our community creates an atmosphere you can’t find elsewhere.

I hope to inspire the next generation of young professionals to see that West Central Michigan offers meaningful opportunities for a lifelong, successful career. remains tightly connected. We work collaboratively to support one another and share resources, even when faced with limitations. What is the most important challenge that our community needs to address?

Our community needs more selfawareness and accountability around substance use and its connection to mental health. What other professional achievements have you received?

This is the first award I’ve ever received, and it’s truly an honor. I graduated from Ferris State University in 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in Social Work and have been dedicated to this field ever since. I began my journey with Arbor Circle as an intern, then served as a Youth Prevention Specialist, and I’m proud to now hold the position of Youth Prevention Coordinator.

What is your next career goal?

In the next 5 to 7 years, my goal is to pursue a master’s degree in Social Work. I’ve also been strongly considering a path toward becoming a school counselor. I have a deep passion for working with youth and hope to expand my role in supporting and empowering them within my community.

How do you hope to inspire the next generation of young professionals? I want to start by saying that I’m not perfect – and I don’t expect you to see me that way. We are all works in progress, constantly growing. My hope is to inspire you to keep striving toward the person you want to become. Don’t dwell on what you can’t do; instead, recognize and celebrate what you’ve already accomplished. Let your mistakes be lessons, not definitions. Believe in your dreams, and keep manifesting your hopes and aspirations.

was a scam, honestly. But then I did a little research into the previous publications and got to hear other people’s stories. I am honored to receive this award and be given this opportunity.

What is your next career goal?

To continue learning how to protect the health and safety of Michigan workers.

How do you hope to inspire the next generation of young professionals?

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, own them. If you take care of business at a young age, you will one day get to enjoy the fruits of your labor. If you are trying to eat the fruit before it is ripe, you’ll never have enough, we have all heard of compound interest. You’re always getting paid whether that be in time or money. You have to make the determination what is more valuable to you, time or money. Not all careers give you both. There is much more to a job than the hourly wage.

We have also been addressing the rising housing and transportation needs throughout Newaygo County within our community grantmaking.

I will continue to learn, try and do great work, so we can keep building one

another and our communities.

How do you hope to inspire the next generation of young professionals?

The world becomes a better place when you decide to do something about it. Change begins within ourself and how we treat those closest to us. Keep loving, giving, and sacrificing yourself for the betterment of you, those around you, and our community. When leaders know, care and serve with humility, the world is set on fire, and we can come together for the common good. Let this hope inspire you to work sacrificially, change continuously, and love always in every small thing you do.

What is your next career goal?

My next career goal is to not only increase our business and bring in more events to the Cadillac area, but to create an organization within our community. I am currently making plans to create an organization to offer volunteer work for different business and non-profits. I am still working out the details however, I am very excited to see where this opportunity takes me! Other than that I want to continue my community outreach to excel in my career.

How do you hope to inspire the next generation of young professionals?
