2024 HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL PREVIEWS

Hitting: Henry, Buss and Trey Fullerton will return to the lineup. Tyce and Boylen will hopefully return from football injuries by the end of the year. There will be some young talent stepping up into big roles this year.

Pitching: We have a lot of arms that just haven’t had the varsity experience yet but will be thrown into the fire. Colby Wort was our number one arm, and Sam Carr ate a lot of innings for us along with Tyce Fullerton and Hayden Wiese. We will be a pitching staff by committee.

Fielding: Jack Buss will have his second year behind the plate, and Maverick Henry will be up the middle of the defense. The rest is still up for grabs. We have a lot of kids fighting for spots.

Season outlook: We expect to compete like always. We play a very competitive schedule, so we will get a look at a lot of young kids. We have a lot of inexperience at the varsity level, but we have a lot of kids that know baseball. I am looking for us to improve throughout the season and be very competitive come regionals.

CARROLLTON

Coach: Ryan Howard

Last year’s record: 8-20

Returning starters:

Caleb Howard P, CF (senior)

Koby Schnelten RF (junior)

Carson Flowers LF

(sophomore)

Eli Flowers 3B (junior)

Eli Cox P, infield (sophomore)

Dagan Cordes C, P, infield (junior)

Carson Graford infield (junior)

Charlie Stumpf P, infield (sophomore)

Lucas Howard C, P, infield (junior)

Key losses: We lost Boden Flowers as a key pitcher and shortstop.

Key newcomers: We have a talented group of freshmen, including Buddy Holmes, Jayce Stiencooler, Carter Randolph, Wyatt Ross, and Landon Grafford. They will be utility players and will see the mound throughout the season.

Pitching: We will be looking toward Caleb Howard (RH), Lucas Howard (RH), Dagan Cordes (RH), Eli Cox (LH), Eli Flowers (RH) and Charlie Stumpf (LH) to lead our pitching roles out of the gate.

Fielding: We have to replace Bo Flowers at shortstop. We have a couple young men that will fill that position well. We are looking forward to a fun season. Caleb is a four-year starter in the outfield. With Koby and Carson on each side, we should be very solid out there. Lucas and Dagan will be leading our infield in their third year of starting varsity ball. Lucas’ focus will be behind the plate, and Dagan will anchor the middle infield. Eli Flowers will be back at third base, with Carson Grafford working the middle infield with Cordes. The

two lefties will be finding their home between the mound, first base, and short. We have an energetic group that is excited for the season.

GREENFIELDNORTHWESTERN

Coach:

Jacob McEvers

Last year’s record: 13-20 (regional champions, fourpeat 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023)

Returning starters:

Kohen Vetter (senior) .351

AVG, .438 OBP, 39 H, 9 2B, 3 HR, 31 RBI, 37 R -- 44 IP  Brayden Roberts (senior) .313

AVG, .389 OBP, 30 H, 4 2B, 2 HR, 18 RBI, 29 R -- 40 IP, .917 fielding percentage

Brody Reif (senior) .286

AVG, .333 OBP, 28 H 4 2B 3 HR (home run in the regional title game gave us the lead for good), .938 fielding percentage

Talon Albrecht (junior) .404

AVG, .476 OBP, 1.081 OPS, 44 H, 3 HR, 30 RBI -- 59 IP, 8 W, .962 fielding percentage

Garrett Costello (junior) .305

AVG, .447 OBP, 25 H, 1 HR, 11 RBI, 22 R -- 21 IP, .971 fielding percentage

Wyatt Stuart (junior)

.381 OBP, 22 H  Griffin Rothe (junior) .395 OBP, 1 HR, .914 fielding percentage

Brock Bowman (sophomore)

.362 OBP, .932 fielding percentage

Kayden Roberts (sophomore)

.286 AVG, .444 OBP, 1.000 fielding percentage

Key losses: Brett Bilbruck was our lone senior in 2023. He caught and played third. Brett hit .344, with a .470 OBP, 7 2B, 7 HR and 32 RBI.

Key newcomers:

Maddax Coffey. We expect Maddax to catch and play some third base. Maddax has put in a lot of work to join the team. We’re looking forward to him being a big piece of what we do this year.

Caleb Albracht is a standout athlete at GNW. He will play some middle IF and OF, a guy that can run the bases great and will provide depth that we didn’t have in the past.

Hitting: Last year we struggled at the plate to hit for both average and power. With a lot of guys back, we are hopeful to improve in both of those areas. We used a lot of small ball to advance during postseason play last year. We are a team that is still going to have to use small ball, but we’re hopeful to also hit for average.

Pitching: We return around 96 percent of our innings pitched last season. Kohen Vetter, Brayden Roberts and Talon Albrecht combined for 140-plus innings pitched for us last year. Those three will be the mainstays in our rotation, and we will look to give them the ball in key situations.

Fielding: We will have to replace Bilbruck at the third base/catching positions. Last season we had a team fielding percentage of .937, and that will have to be a key for our season

again this year. With help from Maddax Coffey and Kayden Roberts, we are confident we will have another strong defensive team this year.

Season outlook: We have had some postseason success over the past five seasons but would really like to become more competitive throughout the regular season. Last year we did not make the semifinals in the conference tournament, and that is a place we would love to get back to. We would really like to continue our postseason success, but being competitive for all 35 games is our main focus this season. We are a team that struggled a lot at times last season, but with 10 to 11 varsity guys coming back, we are looking for a bounceback season at GreenfieldNorthwestern.

GRIGGSVILLEPERRY

Coach: David Forshey (first year)

Last year’s record: 2-18

Returning starters:

Michael Myers – P/1B/3B

Lane Lipcaman -- P/CF/1B

Wyatt Lipcaman – SS/P/C

Colby Tate – P/1B/3B

Flint Kirk -- C

Bradyn Lister -- OF

Key losses: Logan Evans, outfield

Key newcomers: We have some talented freshmen joining the Tornadoes this year. I expect

some of them to be starters by season’s end. This group is also going to add a few more arms in the pitching rotation, which is something we have lacked in years past.

Hitting: This will be an area of improvement for us as a team. We have the potential to be a really good hitting team. We will just have to work the bugs out early and build some confidence back into our plate appearances. We plan to play a lot of small ball this year.

Pitching: We are looking at Colby Tate as our number one starter this season. He’s worked a lot in the off-season this year and is looking really good right now. We are also looking for Lane and Wyatt Lipcaman, Michael Myers, Rory Phillips, Brian Embree and Brody Rush to give us some time on the mound this year. We aren’t looking for them to do anything fancy; we just want them to hit their spots, and if the ball gets put into play, our defense will take care of the rest. No pressure on our pitchers to strike every batter out. We would rather they throw a pitch to hit and we make a play than put them on base with a walk. Fielding: We are a good fielding team. Logan Evans was a mainstay in the outfield last year going between left and center field, so we will need to replace his leadership out there. Bradyn Lister and Lane Lipcaman are our returning starters in the outfield. Both have good arms and are good fielders. Other key players on defense include

2024 HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL PREVIEWS

catcher Flint Kirk; shortstop Wyatt Lipcaman; OF/INF Michael Myers; and P/1B/3B Colby Tate.

Season outlook: We will improve our win/loss record. We have a really great group of athletes. We just need to improve our hitting. We will be more aggressive, and we are going to be a team that’s fun to watch and will hustle on every play.

JACKSONVILLE

Coach: Cory Bunner (11 years)

Last year’s record: 16-18 (8-10 CS8)

Returning starters: Hayden Hicks (All-CS8) (OF/P), Cody Fry (3B/1B/P), Brandon Sims (HM All-CS8) (C), Anderson Decker (SS/P), Ryan Luconic (3B/P), Joe Reif (OF), Nolan Peters (1B/P), Liam Lane (2B/P)

Key losses: Quin Saxer (OF/P)

Key newcomers: Ryan Headen (OF/P)Hitting: Hicks .367, Sims .316, Decker .269, Peters .258. We bring back a lot of our offense from last year. We will have to execute the little things to score runs again this season. We hope with many veteran varsity guys that everyone will be able to take the next steps to improve our offensive output.

Pitching: Cody Fry, Ryan Luconic, Anderson Decker, Hayden Hicks, Liam Lane. Fry and Luconic will be our top

two arms and will look to pick up innings we lost due to the graduation of Quin Saxer. After these two will be a committee of arms we will have to experiment with to put each guy in a spot to be successful.

Fielding: We should be a solid defensive team as we bring back all but one outfielder from last season. Our defense will be anchored behind the plate by Brandon Sims. Decker and Lane will man the middle infield, with Joe Reif in center. Hicks out in right has one of the best arms in the conference.

Season outlook: We have a veteran team in terms of experience, but all guys will need to take the next step to help make up for the loss of Saxer. Our goals continue to be to play the game the right way and compete each and every pitch. We feel we have a group that will do that.

NEW BERLIN

Coach: Bo Gum

Last year’s record: 22-12

Returning starters:

Senior Trevor Colwell SS -Hitting: .278, 20 runs; Pitching: 14 IP, 2-0

Sophomore Reid Hepperly 3B -- Hitting: .237; Pitching: 37 IP, 6-2 record, 38 K, 3.78 ERA

ERA

Senior Jacob Roberts OF -- Second Team All-Sangamo; Hitting: .427, 41 hits, 19 RBI, 33 runs

Senior Gannon Dodd OF -- Second Team All-Sangamo; Hitting: .398, 39 hits, 18 RBI, 41 runs

Senior Lucas Bixby 1B/P

-- First Team All-Sangamo; Hitting: .451, 46 hits, 3 HR, 32 RBI, 21 runs; Pitching: 44 IP, 3-3 record, 3.34 ERA, 88 K

Junior Wyatt Frantz C/P

-- Honorable Mention AllSangamo; Pitching: 29 IP, 2-2 record, 31 K, 1.45 ERA

Sophomore Nolan Robinson

IP/P -- 18 IP, 1-2 record, 1.94 ERA, 16 K

Key losses: Lost three seniors to graduation: catcher James Moore, third baseman Landon Schutz and outfielder Jack Hepperly.

Key newcomers:

Caden Colwell (sophomore)

Nolan Robinson (sophomore). Has a chance to be a key pitcher for New Berlin.

Mason Scroggins (junior)

Wesley Preckwinkle (senior). Wesley dealt with a knee injury last year and missed the season. His leadership will give the Pretzels a boost. We look forward to him getting a chance to compete.

Nolan Hart (senior)

Bryce Pridemore (senior)

Both Hart and Pridemore bring a solid bat to the Pretzels lineup. They will all get opportunities to earn a starting position.

Hitting: The Pretzels return most of their offense from last year. Dodd, Roberts, Prince, and Bixby give us a group that can play with a little pop or run when needed. The Pretzels as a team are looking to run, and could see four or five guys get 20-plus stolen bases.

Pitching: Lucas Bixby leads a young pitching staff. Lucas had 88 strikeouts in 44 innings pitched. He ended with a 3-3

record, with a couple of bad luck losses. He will set the tone for the Pretzels and be matched up against some of the area’s best teams.

From there Reid Hepperly, Rockman Prince, Nolan Robinson, and Wyatt Frantz will battle for the top two and three spots.

All pitchers will get significant innings this year. Trevor Colwell, Caden Colwell and Mason Scroggins will have a bullpentype role for the team.

Fielding: The defense should be a strength for the Pretzels. Trevor Colwell holds down the shortstop position. He is athletic and smart. Wesley Preckwinkle plays a solid fundamental second base, and is a vocal leader. Lucas Bixby is an athletic first baseman that saves a lot of bad throws. Reid Hepperly is an athletic third baseman.

The outfield is home to several good athletes for the Pretzels. Senior Gannon Dodd and Jacob Roberts can run just about anything down. Junior number three hitter Rockman Prince will move to the outfield this year. He has good range and a strong arm.

Season outlook: The Pretzels have won 20 games or more the past two years, and look to do that again this year. The pitching staff is strong enough to compete for a regional championship.

NORTH GREENE

Coach:

Joe Kindred

Last year’s record: 10-13 (3-6 WIVC)

Key returning players: Garret Hazelwonder INF/OF/P; Bradley Barfield OF/P; Brody Berry 2B; Jacob Hinsey 3B/P; Ethan Clark CKey losses: Brayden Faulkner OF/P; Reese Scott SS

Key newcomers: Payten Henline SS/P. Payten Henline will add to our pitching rotation and serve to strengthen our defense in the field. Additional

newcomers will get their chances for varsity playing time.

Season outlook: With five returning starters from last year’s team, North Greene hopes to continue to build a positive and competitive culture grounded in accountability and consistency. Staying healthy will be a big key for the Spartans this year.

PITTSFIELD

Coach:

Zach Ferguson (first season as head coach; two previous seasons as assistant)

Last season’s record: 26-5

Returning starters:

Luke Saxe C

Brennan Tomhave P/INF

Tim Hull INF

Justin Pennock P/INF

Draven Puterbaugh INF/P

Hayden Gratton INF

Konner Allen P/INF

Luke Archer OF/P

Newcomers: Clayton Reinhardt, Carter Frazier, Lane Foster -- young talent to push the upperclassmen

Hitting: Overall, a good hitting team with room to improve. Looking to be a hard out 1-9 in the lineup.

Pitching: Konner Allen, Brennan Tomhave, Justin Pennock, Draven Puterbaugh, Clayton Reinhardt, Luke Archer, Zayn Knight, Carter Frazer, Kyle Bradshaw, Isaac Helms. Expect them all to compete and throw strikes.

Key losses: Nolan Daniel (OF)

Season outlook: Expect to compete in each game we play, to get better as the season goes forward. Goal is to win a regional and advance into the next rounds.

Last year’s record: 16-17

Returning starters: The Bluejays will return several starters from last year’s 16-win team. P/1B/OF Brady Kinney, P/3B Trace Donnan, CF Drew Atwater, SS Barrett Morse, DH/P/1B Kendall Davis, INF/ OF Drew Marr and C Hunter Roberts all will be returning to the Jays lineup.

Key losses: The Jays will miss Ryan Bettis, Jake Hampton and Hunter Walters.

Key newcomers: The coaching staff is very excited about many of the newcomers this year. Junior Brayden Buffington, and sophomores Jett Karrick, Brody Landon and Levi Hoagland all look to build off their varsity experience from last year.

Pitching: Pitching looks to be a strength for the Bluejays. The top end of the staff will be led by senior Trace Donnan, junior Kendall Davis and sophomore Levi Hoagland. Other arms that will be used regularly are senior Drew Atwater, sophomore Brody Landon, and sophomore Jett Karrick. Freshmen Nash Donnan and Kolin Johnson have also looked good early in practice off the mound and could see some varsity innings during the dog days of the season.

Coach:

Hitting: The Jays look to improve their offense from a year ago. The Bluejays return the whole lineup from last year except for Ryan Bettis, who capped off a three-year varsity career with a solid offensive season last year, leading the Jays in batting average. Senior Trace Donnan is looking to top last year, when he earned First Team All-Conference honors for his work on the mound and as a position player. Seniors Drew Atwater, Brady Kinney and Hunter Roberts, and junior Kendall Davis all look to solidify the offense this year. The offense will rely on taking extra bases and putting the ball

RBI, 20 SB

Key newcomers: Junior Eli Olson P/OF/C -- Very toolsy player that adds to our depth and versatility.

Very talented sophomore class that can compete for significant innings that includes AJ Charpentier, Talon Thompson, Dalton Brown, Samuel Long, Jacob Brown, and Oliver Smith. Also, freshmen Anson Butcher, Owen Smith, Lake Unland, and Cam Fritz may see time on the mound or in specialty defensive roles.

Hitting: We are led by our three seniors, but 1-9 can absolutely swing it. We will hit for average and power, and we will continue to put pressure on teams with our speed.

Pitching: Conrad Charpentier is our staff ace. Looking forward to seeing him compete as a senior this year. He can go win the big games. Brock Runyon, Brady Turner and Eli Olson all will be in the mix for the two-three role, along with AJ Charpentier.

Our staff prides itself on throwing strikes and using the D behind them. We have a very talented group of outfielders and infielders.

in play to score runs this year. Stealing bases will also be a key component.

Fielding: Many of the Bluejays will be moved around this year, with versatility being a key aspect to the team. One player who will anchor the defense is senior catcher Hunter Roberts. Roberts took over the catching duties for the past three years and performed very well, earning allconference honorable mention honors last year. Another key

defensive player will be Drew Atwater, who earned Second Team All-Conference honors last year for his outstanding play in the outfield. Junior Barrett Morse looks to anchor the infield at shortstop after having a solid sophomore campaign at the position.

Season outlook: This year the Bluejays enter the year eager to build off last season’s 16-win team. There are high internal expectations this

season. The Jays’ schedule is very competitive, and the Sangamo Conference is one of the best small school conferences in the state. The Jays will have their work cut out for them to improve on that 16-win total. The pitching and defense for this year should be strong, as long as everyone stays healthy. The offense will benefit from all the players returning with experience. This year could prove to be a great one if the

Bluejays can stay healthy and

Daxton Baptist -- .398 BA, 45 H, 5 doubles, 6 triples, 1 HR, 36

Fielding: We are a good fielding team, but catcher is probably our biggest void left from last year. Senior Issac Long, sophomore Talon Thompson, and junior Eli Olson will all get innings behind the plate, and all three do a great job and have pros and cons back there. We have depth at all positions.

2024 HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL PREVIEWS

Season outlook: I expect ups and downs and adversity, but I expect us to see a lot of success. Our guys work really hard in season and off season. They are all great students, with 90 percent of them listed on honor roll or high honors. I hope to see their hard work pay off in the reward of playing in Peoria in June.

TRIOPIA

Coach: Rich Thompson

Last season’s record: 11-15

Returning starters: We return everyone -- Austin Strubbe senior third base/pitcher, Evan Bell senior OF/INF/P, Carter Lakamp senior P/OF, Ian Stock junior INF/P, Brock York junior P/OF, Cooper Parrish sophomore C/P/INF, Jacob Cook sophomore P/INF, Grant Fricke sophomore P/INF, Gameli White sophomore OF

Key losses: none

Key newcomers: Razon Vega freshman INF/P, Sam Miller OF/INF/P, Logan VanMeter, Andrew Hobrock sophomore INF, Austin VanGundy sophomore C/OFHitting: Fricke .398, 17 RBIs, 24 runs; Strubbe .279, 22 RBIs, 14 runs; York .274, 32 runs, 18 steals; Parrish .328, 17 RBIs; Bell .268, 14 RBIs, 20 runsPitching: Fricke 4-3, 1.85 ERA; York 2-4, 5.43 ERA; Cook 1-3, 4.84 ERA; Lakamp 2-2, 5.67 ERA.

Fielding: Fricke at shortstop,

York at center, Stock at second, Parrish at catcher, Strubbe at third, Bell in the outfield, Cook at first base, White in left field.

Season outlook: We are very excited because we were very young last year and played pretty good baseball. We are a year older and stronger and have a bigger and deeper bench this year. Our pitching should be much improved as a lot of younger guys logged some valuable innings last year, and we look to be stronger and deeper on the mound this year led by Fricke and York. We should be solid defensively, and if we can throw strikes and catch the ball, I think we can compete.

WEST CENTRAL

Coach:

Grant DeWitt (seventh season)

Last year’s record: 20-10 (regional champions, advanced to the sectional championship game)

Returning starters: We have several returning starters back from last year’s team that won its first regional championship since 2016 and advanced to the sectional championship (Sweet 16).

Mason Berry (senior) -Mason will resume catching duties for the fourth straight year. Looking for him to continue improvement in that position and take control of the pitching staff. Mason will also be looked upon to throw

some relief innings. Offensively, Mason has worked hard in the off-season fine-tuning his swing, and will be a cornerstone toward the top of the Cougar lineup.

Carson Brown (junior) -Carson is coming into the 2024 year healthy. We are looking for him to command the first base position and hit in the middle of the lineup. He has a great baseball IQ and will be a leader for this year’s team.

Dalton Hutton (junior)

-- Dalton will be returning as the Cougars’ number one pitcher. He had an outstanding sophomore campaign, and he has continued to work hard to make himself better on the mound and also at the plate.

Cameron Sievers (junior)

-- Cameron is going to be a top three pitcher this year. Not exactly sure how things will shake out yet, but we look forward to him building off of last year’s performance. Also looking for Cameron to improve offensively as he has worked hard in the weight room to get stronger.

Landyn Woods (junior) -Landyn will be a key piece to the Cougars’ success this year. Being a utility guy, he will be playing several different positions. He has always had a good glove, but we are hoping to see some offensive jumps this year.

Caden Meyer (junior) -Caden struggled in the 2023 season. We are hoping for big things this year as he will have to be a crucial player for the Cougars to be successful and

reach some of the goals that the team has discussed.

Key losses: Tyson Brown

-- Tyson will be difficult to replace due to his impact in all facets of the game. Tyson was a three-year starter as a middle infielder, lead-off hitter, and was a starting pitcher as well. He was a foundation piece to help turn the program around.

Key newcomers: Anthony Hance (freshman) -- Anthony will more than likely play an outfield position for West Central this year. He is fast, athletic, and has the ability to run down fly balls in the gap. We will also be looking for Anthony to log some valuable innings on the mound as a freshman. He is a kid who is determined to be good in whatever sport he is playing, and it has shown in terms of baseball as he has prepared for his freshman year.

Tucker Arnold (freshman) -- Tucker will be a utility guy for West Central this year. We look for Tucker to work to win an everyday position. We are also excited that he has been working hard this off-season to become a better catcher. This will give us a great opportunity to use Mason Berry more in the field or even on the mound.

Pitching: Our three top arms from last season will all be returning this year.

Dalton Hutton -- Hutton will return for his junior season looking to lead the team again on the mound as our ace. He had an incredible sophomore

campaign, and he has been working hard this off-season to increase velocity. In 2023 Dalton went 8-2 with a 1.16 ERA. He logged an impressive K/BB ratio, with 112 strikeouts and 26 walks over 66 innings pitched.

Cameron Sievers -- We are looking for Cameron to take a big jump this season on the mound and command our number two pitcher status. Cameron has continued to work hard in the off-season in the weight room getting stronger. In 2023 Cameron went 3-3 with a 2.97 ERA.

Landyn Woods -- Landyn also provided some crucial relief innings for us last year. We look for him to log more innings on the mound in 2024 as well. As a sophomore, Landyn pitched 21 innings, went 1-0 and logged a 4.2 ERA.

Other pitchers: Anthony Hance (freshman) -- Coming into high school this year, we are looking for Anthony to have a big impact on the mound. Anthony has a lot of experience on the mound from junior high and playing travel baseball for Future Swings. Dalton Hutton has kind of taken him under his wing, and those two have been throwing together as they prepare for the upcoming season. Hance has a lot of potential.

Carson Brown, Mason Berry and Caden Meyer will all be asked to help with inning pitched this year as well.

With several games in a short period of time, and the IHSA

pitch-count rules, all members of the pitching staff will be crucial in having a successful season.

Hitting: Offensively, we are looking to be aggressive at the plate and running the bases. We have several returning starters that have tons of experience at the plate.

Mason Berry -- .395 AVG and .513 OBP; recorded 34 total hits, 32 RBIs, 21 runs, and stole 17 bases.

Landyn Woods -- .316 AVG and .376 OBP; recorded 31 total hits, 38 RBIs, 18 runs

Carson Brown -- .309 AVG and .519 OBP; recorded 17 hits and 17 RBIs (he only played the second half of the season due to a knee injury. It will be nice to have him healthy for a full season.)

Dalton Hutton -- .306 AVG and .438 OBP; recorded 26 hits, 20 runs, 3 home runs and 19 RBIs

Fielding: Fielding has several spots that should be accounted for, but we are still working a few things out to see what fits best for this year’s team. We have several players that can play many different positions and a lot of lineups will be determined based on who is the starting pitcher for that day.

Season outlook: Have high expectations for this group as we have several key players returning. We will look to build off of our 20-10 record from last year. This group has set some big goals after last year’s success and postseason run.

GOOD LUCK, TEAMS!

BEARDSTOWN

Coach: Kaitlyn Dodson

Last year’s record: 19-12

Returning starters: Bella Palmer OF/1B, Shelby Goodrich P/3B, Vanessa Nunez SS/P, Kylynn Maltby C, Autumn Bowman OF

Key losses: Jaelyn Simpson 1B, Marlee Brown-P/3B, Emma Hymes 2B

Key newcomers: Cami Coats -- I expect a lot of good defense from her. Lauren Coats -- she’ll have to step in as a pitcher for us this year. Hallie Lawson -- I expect good things from her at the plate with her power.

Hitting: Vanessa Nunez, Bella Palmer, Shelby Goodrich -- they all were great power hitters last year, and I expect the same for this year. Vanessa finished with a batting average of .400 last year. Bella’s was .355, and Shelby hit .379.

Pitching: Shelby Goodrich will be our go-to pitcher. She had 10 wins and 3 losses for us last year. Vanessa Nunez will be seeing a lot of action this year on the mound. She pitched a few innings for us last year. Lauren Coats will be the newbie on the mound for us, but we expect great things.

Fielding: We will be relying heavily on our defense this season. We have a few key spots that need to be filled (1B, 3B, OF) and we are still working out the kinks. We have 13 girls this

season, so finding girls that work well in different spots will be challenging. Vanessa Nunez has been working hard and earning her spot at shortstop. Kylynn Maltby will be our returning starting catcher.

Outlook: We have a great group of girls who come to practice ready to work hard and have fun. They listen and are coachable, so I am positive we will see so much growth throughout the season. Our goal this year is to get better each time we step on the field and come together as a team.

BROWN COUNTY

Coach: David Woodruff

Last year’s record: 25-10

Returning starters: Alivia Akins and Olivia Martinez are my only returning players.

Key losses: Katey Flynn, Klare Flynn, Cyrah Dunlap, Leah Houston, Taryn Moorman, Melanie Loehr — all graduated. Addy Jones transferred schools, and I had three decide not to play.

Key newcomers: Jamie Loehr, freshman shortstop; Lilly Ham, freshman pitcher/1b; Joie Ham if/pitcher (sophomore)

Hitting: We are still working on filling out the roster to play this spring, so I am unsure of how we are going to hit

Pitching: The Ham sisters are going to do the bulk of the

pitching this season. I am excited that they are both taking on this challenge knowing how hard it is to keep working at it.

Fielding: I pretty much have to replace the whole team. Olivia Martinez will do the bulk of the catching, and Alivia Akins will play somewhere on the infield. The rest of the girls playing this year will be working on different spots.

Season outlook: Our number one goal is to be better at the end of the season then at the beginning. We lost a ton from last year’s team, and this group will have the opportunity to grow together. The other big goal for the year will be in the circle with Lilly and Joie both stepping up to take this on. I am really proud of them wanting to do this, and I feel a year from now we will be vastly improved. Overall, it will be a rebuilding year for us.

CALHOUN

Coach: Ann Gilman

Last year’s record: 27-11

Returning starters:

Delani Klaas 1B/C (.284 AVG, 0.33 OBP) Anna Oswald OF/1B (.220 AVG, 0.291 OBP)

Gracie Klaas OF (0.250, AVG, .337 OBP)

Kiera Sievers C (.330 AVG, .390 OBP)

Katie Matthews OF (.103 AVG, .300 OBP)

Anabel Eilerman OF (.215

AVG, .287 OBP)

Lacy Pohlman OF (.333 AVG, 0.375 OBP)

Audrey Gilman P/1B (.436 AVG, .525 OBP)

Grace Ballard SS (.333 AVG, .478 OBP)

Haylee Armbruster 3B (.366 AVG, .475 OBP)

Key loss: Lila Simon 2B (.404 AVG, .477 OBP)

Key newcomers: Annie Wilson, Layla Longnecker and Bralyn Lammy -- all freshmen who have good softball skills, speed and experience.

Hitting: I look for our team to be solid hitters up and down the lineup. Most of our hitters are power hitters, but they will all do what is necessary to put runs on the board. Any one of them has the ability to do damage. At this time, I look for the top three hitters in the lineup to be Grace Ballard, Audrey Gilman and Haylee Armbruster.

Pitching: Audrey Gilman (192 1/3 IP, 1.165 ERA, 787 BF, 375 K, 79 BB) will be our ace this season. Audrey has speed and spin, and can present an issue for most batters. Anabel Eilerman (44 IP, 3.818 ERA, 200 BF, 52 K, 12 BB) and Layla Longnecker will both see quality innings, and both have a great pitch selection with good command and speed.

Fielding: Position possibilities -- Grace Ballard shortstop, Audrey Gilman pitcher, Haylee Armbruster third, Lacy Pohlman center

Key positions to fill – catcher.

Looking at Delani Klaas, with Bralyn Lammy on standby; and second base -- considering Annie Wilson or Katie Matthews. I have a number of girls who are equally talented, making it difficult to make player decisions. We look solid defensively in practice -- just need that to transfer to games.

Season outlook: I look for us to be just as good if not better than last season. We have talent, speed, and strength working in our favor.

CARROLLTON

Coach: Travis Klingler (seventh year)

Last year’s record: 25-9

Returning starters:

Lauren Flowers, junior – She was one of our main pitcher last year, going 12-6 with 184 Ks across 123 innings. She had an ERA of 1.75. She will also be our shortstop when not pitching. She led our team in most offensive categories -- .564 average, 15 home runs, 51 RBIs, 61 runs scored, and 23 stolen bases.

Hannah Uhles, junior – She will also be one of our main pitchers in the coming year. She was 11-3 with 87 Ks across 66 innings, with an ERA of 4.62. She also will be one of our top hitters as she had the following stats last year -- .477 average, 11 doubles, 39 RBIs, 38 runs scored.

Daci Walls, junior – She will share duties at catcher and first

base. She returns from a very good sophomore season where she hit .382 with 5 home runs and 33 RBIs.

Vanna Holmes, junior – She was a very solid/consistent hitter in our lineup, usually in the four or five spot during her sophomore year. She hit .354 with 11 doubles, 24 RBIs and 33 runs scored.

Megan Camden, junior – She will share duties at catcher and first base as well. She hit .398 in her sophomore year with an OBP of .522, thanks to 19 walks. She contributed eight home runs to go along with 33 RBIs and 28 runs scored.

Halle Webb, senior – She will help in both the infield and outfield depending on who is pitching. She hit .260 with an OBP of .407, along with 24 runs scored with 19 RBIs.

Key Losses: We are losing four seniors from last year’s team in Ella Stumpf (SS, 2B), Lauren Walker (3B), Sophie Pohlman (CF) and Ryan Kallal (DP, OF)

Key newcomers: Returning sophomore Hannah Lake will look to take a step forward this year as she saw some varsity time in the outfield and at second base. She was our primary courtesy runner and scored 26 runs. The Lady Hawks welcome incoming freshmen Hayden McMurtrie, Brooklyn Eilermann, Courtney Waldhauser, Kaylee Day, Tymber Herder and Audrie Alvarez, who can contribute across the diamond. McMurtrie

should help plug some holes in the infield, and Eilermann and Waldhauser both have travel ball experience. Both are pitchers.

Pitching: Lauren Flowers and Hannah Uhles will get the bulk of varsity innings. See stats above as we will mix and match these two during the year. Keeping our arms fresh for the postseason will be key this year as we noticed some fatigue late last year. Vanna Holmes, Brooklyn Eilermann, and Courtney Waldhauser also can be competitive in the circle.

Hitting: The team will be led by the returning players as mentioned above with a strong junior class. We are a young group still that will look to grow as the season continues. The experience that many of our players received last year will hopefully make an impact/ improvement on this upcoming season. Should be a good mix of speed and power.

Fielding: We have many girls who can play multiple positions, and that will be a factor as the pitching staff rounds into form. Season outlook: We expect to contend for the WIVC championship as well as make an extended postseason run. We want to build off our super-sectional appearance last year, where we lost to eventual second-place finisher Illini Bluffs. While we only have 12 girls, this team is full of talent and potential if they can continue to learn and grow during practice times and games.

GREENFIELDNORTHWESTERN

Coach:

Krisse Pitchford

Last year’s record: 2-23

Returning players: Evie White, junior; Kylie Cox, junior; Kylee Campbell, junior; Lillee Springman, junior; Annabeth Thornton, sophomore; and Jillian McAdams, sophomore.

Key loss: Bailee Mathews, second baseman

Key newcomers: Freshmen Kalynn Weller, Karissa Ruyle, Jaylynn Pitchford, and Lainey Frank; and sophomore Gracin Costello. These players bring lots of experience to this already experienced team.

Pitching: The pitching staff will be young, but this season the returning junior, Evie White, will have some back-up to take some of the pressure off of her. The new players to the pitching staff will be freshmen Jaylynn Pitchford, Kalynn Weller and Lainey Frank. Those freshmen will not have big game experience at this level in high school, but will look to White for leadership. The Lady Tigers have a wealth of experience with assistant coach Maddie Gillingham, who will be a leader all of our pitchers can look to.

Hitting: The Lady Tigers will be looking for hitting from our young team. Sophomore Annabeth Thornton will be a key returning player, along with Kylie Cox, Evie White and Jillian

McAdams. The Lady Tigers will look to these younger players to help lead this team as we bring in new freshmen to help contribute to the lineup. Season outlook: The key factors for this Greenfield-Northwestern Lady Tigers softball team will be focusing on the fundamentals of softball, teamwork, working hard, and building this softball program. The Lady Tigers will be contenders during this 2024 season. The Lady Tigers will come to each game to compete and leave it all on the field. The focus of the coaching staff and team will be learning what worked and what didn’t work. This is what it will take to be contenders and to build a program.

The new coaching staff for the Greenfield-Northwestern Lady Tigers are head coach Krisse Pitchford, assistant coach Maddie Gillingham, and assistant coach Joe Thornton. The Greenfield-Northwestern Lady Tigers are coming into this season with focus, determination, knowledge and fight to build this team into a successful program.

JACKSONVILLE

Returning starters: MacKenzie Gerard (senior): Pitcher, catcher, shortstop. Batted .490. Went 7-18 as a pitcher. OBS .590. 19 RBIs

2024 HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL PREVIEWS

Addie Blimling (senior): Center field and first base. Batted .290. 11 steals, 16 runs

Mia Schaecher (junior): Shortstop and outfield. Batted .255 with a fielding percentage of .930

Chase Neice (sophomore): Catcher, batted .370 with 3 home runs.

Key losses: none

Key newcomers: Maggie Gerard (freshman) is going to add speed on the bases. She’ll be a utility player – we can play her in the infield or outfield. With her athleticism, she can play just about anywhere.

Kenzie Law (freshman) will be another arm on the team and will gobble up some innings.

Hitting: We have a little bit of pop at the top of the lineup.

MacKenzie Gerard and Chase Neice both have the power to leave the field. Leadoff batter Addie Blimling should score a lot of runs. With a bunch of freshmen coming back as sophomores as starters, I look forward to Kinsley Hill, Sommar Vedder and Nevaeh Matthews taking a big step and increasing their batting averages by quite a few points.

Pitching: MacKenzie Gerard is returning as a four-year started and will be our ace for the second year in a row. Our numbers two and three pitchers are Kenzie Law and Naveah Matthews. I am looking forward to seeing them pitch, and hopefully they can take some innings away from MacKenzie Gerard to where she can get

some reps at catcher and shortstop.

Fielding: Each of the past few years we have gotten better on defense, and this year will be no different. With nine returning starters and some really good freshmen coming in, we should not have any huge holes in the field. Addie Blimling will be captain of the outfield in center field, and Mia Schaecher will lead the infield at shortstop. Addie will be a four-year varsity starter as a senior, and this will be Mia’s third year starting at shortstop as a junior. Chase Neice has a cannon for an arm as catcher and is very athletic. I see her getting even better behind the plate as a two-year varsity starter as a sophomore.

Season outlook: This is my fourth year coaching the program and we have increased our wins every year. We hope to hit double-digit wins this year and finish in the top half of the Central State 8 Conference. We are still a young team, but we do have some great veterans at the top. Five of our starters last year were freshmen or sophomores. We will be able to play with a lot of teams and should be in contention for a playoff win.

NORTH GREENE

Coach:

Nathan Roberts

Last year’s record: 0-20

Returning players:

Carlee Speaker, catcher … Carlee is a wall behind the plate

with great hands and a very strong arm … should slow down a lot of potential baserunners. She led the team last year in home runs as well. Kearstan Smith, second base … Kearstan played several key defensive positions last year and should anchor our infield this year with a good glove.

Brandy Davidson, pitcher/first base … Brandy really stepped up last year in the circle when injury struck in our second game. Brandy’s bat was consistent. She gained a lot of experience and confidence in the circle last year.

Chelsey Castleberry, pitcher/ infield … Chelsey had a rough freshman season. We had planned on her sharing time in the circle last year and getting her feet wet with high school ball, but she was injured in the second game of the year and only got into a handful of games.

Larissa Heberling, third base … Larissa handled the hot corner exceptionally well last year, especially being a freshman. Her bat is a big plus in our lineup, and we expect big things out of her this year.

Jaycee Arnold, shortstop/ outfield … Jaycee is our speedster on and off the bases. She patrolled center field for us most of last year until she moved to shortstop to shuffle things around. There wasn’t a fly ball hit that she didn’t catch, or at least come close to running down in the gaps.

Madilyn Wahl, outfield ... Madi was a big surprise for us last year in the outfield. She played both corners and handled

them very well. The experience was a big plus, and I could see big things coming from her defensively this year.

We graduated two players off the team last year. We will be young again this year and building for a very bright future with the athletes that are out right now plus what’s in the upcoming classes. We should be defensively sound, with pitching that will keep us in games, giving our D a chance to make some plays. We should be a scrappy, young team with some team speed to put pressure on opponents this year. We will have two sophomores in the circle for us this year, Brandy Davidson and Chelsey Castleberry. Both are always around the plate, and their pitches are really starting to move. Hitting-wise, we have some ladies with some pop in their bats, but we will look to be gap hitters and move runners around when they’re on.

Grace Henry C/3B

Emma Henry P/OF

Torie Stambaugh SS/OF

Kenley Gerard 2B/OF

Kelsey Freesmeyer P/OF

Key losses: We graduated three seniors who held different positions and roles on the team.

Key newcomers: Lila Simon transferred in from the Calhoun softball program, and we look forward to getting her in the mix as a contributor to our team. We are starting to reap the benefits of our junior high program and the impact it is having on the high school program. We are excited to have a talented group of incoming freshmen -- Josie McClintock, Deegan Allen, Piper Henry, Sophie Gengler, and Emma Wombles -- with a variety of skill sets. All five of these ladies were starters in our junior high program, and we hope to see them take the next step and contribute to Saukee softball.

Hitting: We have concentrated more time on our offense the past few years, and we have a diverse group of ladies who can hit for power, contact, and execute the short game when needed.

Pitching: We have Emma

Henry and Kelsey Freesmeyer returning with varsity pitching experience. The addition of Emma Wombles and Piper Henry to our pitching staff will only make us stronger, and we will work hard to get them varsity ready. We expect the returning pitchers to show some leadership qualities to our new pitchers, and look forward to watching them grow into a versatile but effective pitching staff.

Fielding: We expect our defense to be one of our stronger points as we are returning several players with varsity experience.Season outlook: Overall, we are returning a good portion of our team from last season. We are looking forward to adding our newcomers into the mix and creating a program that benefits our players on and off the field. Some of our goals include creating a team environment, having more wins than losses on our record, and to always have a positive outlook after games and practices.

conference

Marissa Jiannoni, right field, honorable mention allconference

Hailey Brown, second baseGreta Butler, center field

Losses: Kelci Flack, outfield, Liv Hampton, second base

Newcomers: Kylie Teimeyer, sophomore first baseman, started about half the 2023 season; solid bat. Morgan Miller third baseman, returns for her junior year after an injury limited her sophomore year; good all-around player, brings leadership to the club; Bailey Dahmer, sophomore left fielder; hard worker, does a lot of the little things.

Hitting: Aubrey Vogel will probably lead off. She is our fastest and best base runner. Hoke, Branson and Miller will probably hit three through five. They bring extra-base power and dependability. The other spots in the lineup are to be determined. We are not a speedy team, but

we should hit for good power and lots of extra-base hits.

Pitching: Gabbie Branson is our number one, number two and number three pitcher. She is a good pitcher who works hard at her craft. We are dependent on her, and will go as far as she takes us. Marissa Jiannoni did pitch a few games last year and will be asked to do the same this season.

Fielding: Hoke is an allconference catcher, Vogel is arguably the best defensive shortstop in the conference, and Butler returns for her junior season after starting in center field for a season and a half. We should be strong up the middle. Miller moves to third and strengthens that position. Moving Brown to second base will make it a stronger spot than last year. We have a chance to be really good defensively. We just have to limit our mental mistakes.

Outlook: We should

push close to 20 wins with a healthy season. The Sangamo Conference is one of the best in the state, with teams like Olympia, Maroa, Williamsville and Pleasant Plains. We expect to be right in the middle of things. I want our team to be known as a team that never quits and plays the game hard and the right way.

ROUTT CATHOLIC

Coach:

Adam Haas

Last year’s record: 3-12

Returning starters:

Kate Cosgriff P Faith Beddingfield OF Brianne Rogers INF Jenna Varela OF Jaeden Reardon INF/OF

Key losses: Hannah Parlier, shortstop; Cami Hurt, catcher; Paige Creviston, infieldHitting: We have a couple of girls with some pop. At times we may have

to find ways to get on base or move a runner.

Pitching: Kate will be the main pitcher.Season outlook: We are going to be young, with no seniors this year. Playing good defense behind our pitcher, and finding ways to get on base will be key. We are short on numbers this year, and some girls may have to learn new spots. Getting the girls playing, and getting some experience this year will be big for our future.

TRIOPIA

Coach:

Ty Gebhardt

Last year’s record: 15-12

Returning starters: Addison Rohn (C), Mylee Tracy (P), Lindy Parlier (OF), Lucie Dion (SS), Raye Greenstreet (3B)

Key losses: Megan Reynolds (SS), Lily Carson (2B), Ava Ganz (C), Gabby Young (OF)

Key newcomers: Sophia Ogden (2B), Brooke Beck (OF), Rhianna Lovekamp (C), Rilynn Wade (OF), Gabby Myers (1B), Maggie Parlier (OF)

Hitting: We have some girls who can get on base. Rohn, Greenstreet, Tracy and Dion can hit for power, and the rest of our girls are going to find their way on base. We have some fast girls, and we look to use that speed to generate some runs. Rohn returns after missing most of last season with an injury.

Pitching: Mylee Tracy, in her sophomore year, has been putting in the work in the offseason. She was an all-conference selection in her freshman year, and she is going to be our rock. Mylee throws hard and is really working on her movement. She is our primary pitcher. Freshman Maggie Parlier will throw some relief innings as well.

Fielding: We have only two players returning in the spots

that they played last year (Tracy and Lindy Parlier), but we look to these young girls to really step in and make some plays for us. Greenstreet and Dion have some experience on the infield, and they will put together a strong left side to our infield. We lack experience, but our girls are working hard and making some great strides with our defense.

Season outlook: We are low on numbers but not on expectations. Girls are getting a lot of reps in practice and have a great attitude and work ethic. We like the dynamic we have going right now, and we are just going to get better as the year goes on and our girls get more experience and confidence. We had a good shot at a regional title last year, and we would love to find ourselves in the title game again this year. Our hitting will keep us in games early, and our experience and defense will get stronger each day.
