Madison County Transit’s network of trails winds
through both communities, offering miles of shaded paths for long walks or runs with leashed dogs. Edwardsville’s Brent Leh Dog Park takes things a step further, with fenced play areas, agility features, and water stations where dogs can romp off-leash. Joe Glik Park offers an off-leash area, while parks like Leclaire, Ray M. Schon Memorial Park, and Miner Park allow leashed pets, giving families plenty of options for weekend outings.
Shops and Services for Every Need
Pet owners here don’t have to look far to find top-notch supplies. Four Muddy Paws offers natural foods and your choice of self-service dog washing or professional grooming options. Whisker Bones Supply Co. in downtown Edwardsville features gourmet treats (including specialty orders of “gotcha day” dog cakes), training classes for positive pet behavior without the use
of force or intimidation, and the ultimate spa experience for your pet. National retailers like PetSmart in Glen Carbon and Petco in Edwardsville are also available, meaning you are never far from a last-minute litter run or a little treat for your pet!
If you are looking for a more tailored dining plan for your pet, Edwardsville features Pup Kitchen, a family-owned business that crafts humangrade, AAFCO-certified meals
for dogs. What makes Pup Kitchen particularly unique is its location in a historic 1908 commercial kitchen, formerly known as the Robert Probst Sr. House & Bakery. Today, the space has swapped bread-making for crafting small-batch, chef-inspired meals for our furry friends. Owners and residents Marc and Christie Fussell deliver locally within a 40-mile radius, bringing fresh, wholesome meals directly to customers’ doors.
Health care for your pet is just as convenient. Edwardsville Pet Hospital, Heartland Veterinary Hospital, and Ark Animal Hospital provide trusted local care. Glen Carbon is home to Hawthorne Animal Hospital, a 24/7 emergency facility, as well as Olsen Veterinary Clinic and Banfi eld inside PetSmart. Together, these clinics
ensure pets have access to everything from routine checkups to specialized treatment.
Bone Appetit! Options for Dining with Your Dog
Pet ownership here is as much about social life as it is about care. Restaurants and pubs have embraced dog-friendly culture, turning patios into gathering spaces for people and pets alike. Global Brew Tap House and Recess Brewing in Edwardsville welcome dogs inside or outside. For Glen Carbon’s four-legged residents, Wooden Nickel Pub & Grill offers both front and back patios for furry companions.
Lending a Helping Paw
The Edwardsville Public Library offers a unique opportunity for teens to engage with animals through its volunteer
program in partnership with the Metro East Humane Society (MEHS). Teens can assist with various tasks such as walking dogs, socializing cats, preparing and distributing pet food, and more. Rediscovering the Heart of Illinois: A Nostalgic Look at Edwardsville & Glen Carbon
By: Valerie Hoven
Nestled in the St. Louis metro area, Edwardsville and Glen Carbon offer a unique blend of small-town charm and modern convenience. Not many towns can sustain a century-old theater alongside a modern 12-screen cinema, or support thriving local grocers and artisans just blocks from national retailers. Add this juxtaposition to the current societal times when common ground can feel increasingly elusive; yet, the Edwardsville and Glen Carbon communities found a rare harmony that continues to bring people of all backgrounds together.
The Roads That Built a Community
town community feel, even though it has grown so much,” says one millennial who was raised in the area. Yet, as others note, “It is not the old Edwardsville some may recall from the Mississippi River Festival days. If you haven’t visited in a long time, you might be shocked at the updates from that bygone era. I certainly was.”
A Place to Call Home
community’s commitment to preserving the character of “young” Edwardsville and Glen Carbon while supporting economic growth and modern living. It’s a testament to a community that honors its past without sacrificing the comforts of today.
Few events left a mark on Edwardsville and Glen Carbon quite like the Mississippi River Festival (MRF), which ran from 1969 to 1980. Drawing thousands of visitors annually, the festival not only brought music and celebration to the region but also spurred economic growth and infrastructure development. Historians and local authors have worked to preserve its legacy:
• Amanda Bahr-Evola, an archivist and educator, captured the festival’s essence in her 2006 pictorial history, The Mississippi River Festival.
• Stephen Kerber, University Archivist at SIUE, co-authored Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, documenting the university’s role in hosting the festival.
• Mark Pierce, journalist and Glen Carbon native, brought the story to life with his 2024 book, When the Stars Came Out: The Story of the Mississippi River Festival, featuring interviews and firsthand accounts.
Through their work, the spirit of the festival and the era it represents continues to resonate. A FESTIVAL THAT SHAPED A COMMUNITY
Of course, the towns didn’t always look like this. When did Edwardsville and Glen Carbon really begin their journey as a destination?
Like many suburbs across the nation, the evolution of these cities is tied to transportation. The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 reshaped travel and commerce, replacing segments of the iconic Route 66 with modern highways like I-55 and expanding I-70. By improving connectivity to St. Louis, travel times were cut in half, and the area became more accessible for both residents and businesses.
In 1965, Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville was founded. The improved access to the area paired with the introduction of a four-year university were catalysts to the area’s growth. Population surged by 50% by 1980.
From Cornfields to Community Hubs
Longtime residents recall a simpler landscape: cornfields growing where neighborhoods and businesses now stand. “There is still a strong small-
The 1980s saw an influx of new residents, further fueling the transformation of Edwardsville and Glen Carbon. This was a trend across the nation, as the baby boomer generation began raising families of their own, increasing demand for new homes with room to grow. This attracted businesses to put roots in the area and led to expanding services like healthcare and education.
By 2000, the population had swelled beyond 30,000 residents across both towns. The school district blossomed, ranking within the top 30% of all school districts. With the low crime rates, expanding parks and recreation, and growing employment opportunities, the community became a beacon for flocking families.
Now, more than 40,000 residents call the area home, making it one of the largest and most vibrant communities in the region.
Balancing Local Charm and Modern Convenience
Beyond the growth and modernization of Edwardsville and Glen Carbon, one of its unique strengths is its ability to sustain history and innovation side by side. Residents value the comfort and convenience offered by larger retail chains but also cherish the nostalgia and personal touch of local shops and eateries. This balance reflects the
Today, Edwardsville and Glen Carbon balance a reverence for their past with a thriving, modern lifestyle. Whether flipping through digitized yearbooks, exploring historic newspapers, or simply walking the streets that once echoed with festival music, the region invites residents and visitors alike to rediscover the heart of Illinois—where memories live on and history is just a page, a tape, or a photograph away.
Sidebar: Missing the “Old Days?” Preserve Those Memories Digitally
For history buffs and memory keepers, the Edwardsville Library provides a treasure trove of resources. Through the Edwardsville Memory Digitization Program, residents can learn to convert old photographs, VHS tapes, 8mm film, slides, negatives, cassette tapes, and even CDs into digital files. Whether you want to preserve family memories or local history, the library offers both the equipment and expertise.
Library members can also explore newspaper archives dating back to 1862, including the Edwardsville Intelligencer, or dive into the pages of local yearbooks from Edwardsville High School and Junior High School, some going back as far as 1914. It’s a rare chance to step back in time and see how the community has evolved.
Take a Stroll, Visit the Past, Play a Game: Edwardsville’s Parks Offer Something for Everyone
It’s hard to find a lineup of parks quite as diverse as what the City of Edwardsville offers.
Whether you are into history, sports, outdoor festivals, concerts and movies, dog-friendly gathering spaces, water features, playgrounds, lush green spaces or benches tucked into a quiet, shady spot, the City has it covered.
Providing easily accessible parks in every corner of the City is a priority in Edwardsville, and more facilities are coming soon, including the downtown plaza Goshen Commons.
One of the newer park facilities is Plummer Family Park, which provides plentiful opportunities to play, watch or practice baseball, softball, soccer, pickleball, beach volleyball, football, kickball and more. The Parks & Recreation Department caters to these interests and more with a year-round selection of leagues and opportunities for recreational or competitive action. Plummer Family Park joins the Winston Brown Recreation Complex, Leclaire Field and Vadalabene Park as sites filled with features and opportunities for sports recreation.
The R.P. Lumber
Center, which opened in 2022, offers sports opportunities of a cool and entirely different kind: ice skating and hockey. This indoor rink, community, teen and fitness center is a great location to beat the heat, continue some cold-weather delights, get fit and gather for meetings, family parties and more.
Edwardsville’s Route 66 legacy is revved and running at the West End Service Station, the City’s free ode to the Mother Road. Meanwhile, Lusk Memorial Park is the site of the City’s oldest cemetery, and Leclaire Park is the scenic heart of the Leclaire Historic District.
For entertainment inside and out, check out City Park for outdoor festivals, concerts, movies and other events, and the Wildey Theatre, with a year-round lineup of comedians, concerts, movies and more. Both anchor downtown Edwardsville, which also hosts events organized by area organizations and is home to an eclectic blend of unique shops and restaurants. There is something for everyone in the family, including children’s craft projects, dancing, and even pets are welcome (on a leash, of course). This season’s final Market is Oct. 18.
The Market embodies the area’s generous spirit by partnering with local food pantries to feed families in need. It donates fresh produce from vendors and also accepts donations from shoppers and local organizations. The Market has distributed more than 27,000 pounds of produce to local pantries and families.

Sending your child off to college can be a difficult experience. It is tough to know what you need to do to prepare them and yourself.
Thankfully, modern communication and online resources have made this transition for students and parents much easier. You no longer have to be in the dark, wondering when the next bill is coming in, or how your child is doing.
The university hosts an on demand webinar series called SIUE Live. This series is live on Mondays at 7 p.m. and includes information on academic advising, campus living, and much more. If you can’t catch it on Monday evenings, the recordings are available online.
SIUE hosts a mandatory New Student Orientation for first year students prior to their first semester. Family members are welcomed to attend as well.
RESOURCES FOR PARENTS
announcements. The Alestle, the school newspaper, is another free resource to keep you up to date with all things SIUE.
An important thing for parents is knowing their kids are safe. SIUE is ranked as one of the safest campuses nationally. Edwardsville was ranked third in the top 15 safest and affordable cities in the United States according to GoBankingRates.
During the school year, Homecoming and Family Weekend are the perfect time to come and visit your student. This weekend has activities for everyone capped off by the tailgate and homecoming soccer game at Ralph Korte stadium.
For day to day news about SIUE, you can sign up for the SIUE Family Connection. It has campus news and
The e-alert system has been used to connect all SIUE students and staff, alerting them of emergencies. This system can quickly inform everyone of the dangers and what to do in response.
A key thing to remember about sending your child off to school is to let them be independent, but to also not be afraid to stay in touch. Let your kid be themselves and grow on their own, but still call them to check on them. Research tells us that a good support system makes a big difference in the ability and health of students.
SIUE’s resources for parents allows them to aid their child in the transition to college life, helping them to grow and thrive. Parents of SIUE students can leave after move in day feeling that their child is safe and well prepared for the next chapter of their lives.

EDUCATION
By Penny Weaver
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is the community’s obvious crown jewel for higher education, and positive paths to learning start here with the youngest students.
Covering 185 square miles, Edwardsville’s school District 7 includes rural areas, small towns and suburban communities. Edwardsville and Glen Carbon are the largest municipalities in the district.
For 2022-23, District 7 had approximately 7,400 students routed through 13 buildings: six primary elementary facilities, four intermediate elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school, one alternative high
school and the N.O. Nelson Complex.
The school mascot is the Tiger. The main high school building is located at 6161 Center Grove Drive, while its football stadium and many athletic fields are across the street to the south.
Growth in recent years has been exponential. After a building referendum in 2007, District 7 built three new elementary schools, which opened by fall of 2008.
An April 2023 referendum approved by voters means extensive facilities improvements across all Edwardsville schools is underway.
The district’s total minority enrollment is about 20
percent. District 7 achieves a 93 percent graduation rate, spending an average of $11,000 per student per school year, and comes in with an average 23.1 student class size, compared to the state average of 20.9, according to the most recent numbers from state officials.
In addition to public schools, Edwardsville has
private school options including Father McGivney Catholic High School, with a Maryville address just south of Edwardsville; MetroEast Lutheran High School on Center Grove Road in Edwardsville; Trinity Lutheran School; St. Boniface School, with a Catholic affiliation; and the Goddard School of Edwardsville.
