Greater Midland: Finding Fulfillment Through Community

Jodi Sysack, a dedicated volunteer, has found profound fulfillment through her involvement with the Greater Midland Coleman Family Center. After retiring four years ago, Jodi initially embraced the idea of leisure mornings, travel, and the freedom that retirement promised. However, she soon felt something was missing and sought ways to remain active and engaged.

Her journey led her to the Coleman Family Center, where she starts her days as early as 7 AM, dedicating five to six hours to various activities around the Center. Jodi remains deeply involved by volunteering in the clothing center, participating in food distributions, and joining fitness classes through her SilverSneakers® membership.

The Center has provided Jodi with opportunities to learn new skills, including computer classes through the Coleman Post Secondary Hub, and to explore interests such as cardio drumming and group day trips. "I find I’m trying new things, and I like it!" she enthusiastically shared.

Beyond personal growth, the Center has become a place for Jodi to connect with family members of all ages. She treasures moments with her sisters, brother-in-law, and especially her two great-nieces in childcare, whom she sees daily. "Are you having a

good day with your friends? Aunt Jo loves you!" she calls as their classes file through the lobby. She loves the chance to watch them learn and grow. "It just fills you with joy seeing these little people so happy. You have a totally different outlook on life when you stand there and watch them."

One of her cherished activities is participating in the Center’s new cornhole league with her seventeen-year-old grandson. "I don't get to spend much time with him now because he is older and got his license, but now, once a week, I'm guaranteed to see him, and I love that," she expressed warmly.

involvement has enhanced her social life and physical health. Through regular walking and fitness classes, she has experienced a remarkable transformation. "I feel better now than I did 10 years ago," she remarked proudly. Her dedication extends to training with friends for the Greater Midland Dow RunWalk in June.

Reflecting on her retirement, Jodi acknowledges that her time at the Center has surpassed her initial expectations. It has enriched her life with purpose, community, and a renewed sense of vitality.

Travel with Greater Midland

Greater Midland Travel is in full swing! Motorcoach trips are a great way to travel with a group. Trips are fully planned and hosted, allowing travelers to sit back and enjoy new adventures. Greater Midland Community Center has 4 extended trips, and 5-day trips planned for 2025.

“The trips I have gone on have given me the opportunity to explore Michigan without the stress of driving and planning them,” says a senior, who regularly attends trips.

“I went out of my comfort zone to attend a Motorcoach trip for the first time and it was one of the best experiences I have had. I can’t wait for more trips!” says a first-time group traveler.

The only trip you will regret is the one you don’t take! Many of our 2025 trips are full, but we still have seats available on four of our day trips! Spend the Day in Detroit with us in June! We have tickets to explore The Detroit institute of Art, enjoy lunch at the Renaissance Center and we will end our day

at Greenfield Village! Join us in July for a Hometown Adventure while we explore small towns in the Thumb. This trip was brought back by popular request. We will stop in Snover and shop at the Country View Bulk Food, stroll across the longest suspension foot bridge in Michigan, enjoy lunch in the lake town of Lexington, cruise on Lady Huron which travels under the Blue Water Bridge and finish with dinner at Cracker Barrel. Escape to Ludington in August with us! We have so much planned in this beautiful Lake Michigan town! Lastly, join us in October for a Fall Colors trip to Traverse City. This trip will be filled with all things Michigan Fall including a stop at Chateau Chantal Winery where we will tour the cellar and enjoy wine tasting. Visit the Community Center for more details of each of these trips. Sign-up soon before these trips fill!

All trips are fully escorted, taken on a Motorcoach bus, which leaves right from Midland. Call (989)220.3997 or email aewald@greatermidland. org to sign-up to be on the travel email list.

The Association between social support and physical activity in older adults

Creating meaningful connections through socialization brings older adults better mental health, improved self-esteem, increased sense of belonging, and a greater sense of purpose. Seniors who have

social support from family and/or a community have improved overall health. Older adults who engage in physical activities report a better self-esteem, improved mental health, are at a lower fall risk, and have an improved overall

well-being.

The combination of social connections while doing physical exercise, are at a much higher success rate than doing physical exercise without social accountability. At the Midland Community Center, we strive

to build community in the ways we stay active. We encourage being social walking the track, working out in the gym, playing pickleball, and going to group fitness classes! It’s much more enjoyable to do it together!

Effective Tips for Encouraging Your Loved One to Try Seasons

Are you caring for a loved one that is living with memory changes?

Could they benefit from structured activities in a safe, social setting? Are you concerned that they may be resistant to trying it out?

At Seasons Adult Day Health Services, we understand how challenging it can be to start something new, especially for families that are navigating memory changes. Over the last 25 years, the team at Seasons has developed a list of effective tips to use when talking with your loved one about attending. Many families have shared with us how helpful these ideas are. Below you can find the list with a tip that might just work for you.

Discuss that Seasons is about fun, fellowship and good food! Highlight the social aspects and downplay the care aspects of the center. Seasons can be described as a social club.

Describe some of the activities that might be of interest to them and explain this is an opportunity to rediscover old interests as well as discover new interests. The monthly calendar can be found on the Senior Services website.

Talk about the two free trial days to check it out. There is no obligation or commitment. “You might as well give it a try.”

Encourage them to try it for a few weeks.

You can use a statement such as, “Let’s try it for at least a month and after that you can decide if you want to continue attending.” (Keep using the same type of statement until they are more acclimated to Seasons.)

Explain that studies have found that the best thing to help with your memory changes is socialization and keeping active in a center like Seasons. Research has strongly proven that staying social and engaging in cognitive stimulation is often better than many medications that can be given to help with memory loss.

Discuss with them that Seasons is a lot like therapy in many ways because they specialize in programs to work with the brain and body.

Explain that it is known that older adults who start to withdraw and stay at home (often watching TV out of boredom) often experience more memory loss, depression, loneliness, poor health and decreased quality of life. The socialization at Seasons can help improve this.

Explain that the doctor has suggested the benefits of the center and ask the doctor to write an order or prescription for Seasons.

Ask them to attend Seasons for you, because you love them and won’t be worried while at work or other appointments knowing they are with friends.

Share with them that the schedule can be flexible so you can choose the days and times you’d like to attend.

If they are interested in exercise and keeping their body active, you can highlight the NuStep exercise equipment and exercise programs.

Discuss that community outings, special events and guest performers are included in the attendance.

Talk over the health aspects of Seasons that will enhance their physical wellness. Explain that the nurse can monitor blood pressure, check blood sugar, and administer medication.

For more information about how Seasons can help your loved one living with cognitive changes to stay as healthy as possible while engaging in therapeutic activities, contact our Family Support Manager, Christin Rousseau, at 989633-3767.

Embracing the Benefits of an Aging Population

From time to time, we come across articles focused on the importance of attracting a younger population to the area to counteract the trend towards a higher average age populace. Certainly, there are good reasons to work to attract a variety of age groups. At the same time, it is all too common to look at an aging population only through the lens of challenges. Let’s take a moment to instead consider that this shift also offers opportunities and benefits. Older adults bring wisdom, stability, and resources that strengthen and enrich society. Here are just a few ways an aging population contributes positively to

our community.

• MENTORSHIP, VOLUNTEERING AND KNOWLEDGE: Older adults offer their experience as mentors to younger people. Knowledge accumulated over the course of their lives can be a valuable resource to younger colleagues, neighbors and family members. The transfer of wisdom strengthens intergenerational bonds and helps to ensure expertise is preserved. Additionally, older people volunteer more hours than younger populations.

Nationwide, the financial impact of volunteering is in excess of one hundred billion dollars. People aged 65 and up average 96 hours of volunteerism annually.

• ECONOMIC CONTRIBUTIONS: Simply because a person retires, does not mean they no longer add to the economy. Older people support local businesses through their spending, and those over 55 now account for 45% of personal spending in the US. Increasing numbers of older individuals take on late-life careers, thus enhanc-

• CIVIC ENGAGEMENT: Older adults are more likely than younger people to participate in civic activities, such as voting, volunteering, and involvement with community organizations. They help shape policies, support social initiatives, and address local challenges, fostering a spirit of giving.

• FAMILY STABILITY: Grandparents are critical in many families, offering childcare, support, and guidance. The assistance of grandparents allows many working parents to achieve a better work-life balance. Older people also help foster a sense of continuity within the community as keepers of traditions and local history.

• A MODEL OF HEALTHY AGING: Walk into any local gym or senior center and you will see large numbers of older adults embracing a healthy lifestyle. There is an opportunity for younger individuals to see them as role models for wellness and resilience. Midland benefits from programs for ac-

tive seniors because they not only promote well-being but also create enriching social networks and create positive modeling of aging well.

• INNOVATIONS IN HOUSING AND CITY DESIGN: The needs of our aging population should encourage the development of age and disability-friendly infrastructure. When we adopt universal design, the resulting housing stock, transportation systems, and public spaces, improve the quality of life for people of all ages and abilities.

• MIDLAND: TOGETHER, FORWARD, BOLD: Rather than viewing an aging population as a burden, Midland can embrace the opportunities this demographic presents. When we recognize and leverage the strengths of older adults, our community becomes more inclusive and resilient. Investing in programs and policies that support aging individuals not only benefits older adults but also creates a stronger, more interconnected society for all of us.

Volunteering is a fulfilling and rewarding journey that everyone should consider participating in. This selfless and humanitarian endeavor allows you to impact lives and communities. If you have a partner, you can try volunteering together as one of the things to do as your pastime.

WHY SHOULD COUPLES VOLUNTEER TOGETHER?

First, volunteering provides the opportunity to provide assistance to individuals and communities in need. It also allows them to provide people with empowerment so that they can be in good and safe control of their lives.

Volunteering also benefits couples by strengthening their relationships, improving their communication skills, enhancing their health and well-being, etc.

1. A SENSE OF PURPOSE
