Colors of Cancer Metro East campaign in 3rd year

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com

MARYVILLE — The annual American Cancer Society (ACS) Colors of Cancer Metro East fundraising campaign kicked off this month. The leaderboard campaign is championed by the ACS Metro East Regional Leadership Board. This fundraising endeavor asks the community to come together to honor cancer survivors, spread the word about reducing cancer risk, and raise money to help the American Cancer Society save lives. Candidates help make a positive impact on the community through their efforts. Each candidate chooses a cancer type and color to represent during the campaign, wearing the same color everyday throughout the month. The hope is that this generates conversation about the color and why it’s worn every day this month. In addition to raising awareness, candidates are asked to fundraise to support the mission of the American Cancer Society. Colors of Cancer candidates accept a fundraising challenge and will be competing to be the top fundraiser among their peers by the end of the campaign. Fundraising has already begun and will continue through April 30. This year’s campaign was sponsored locally by Anderson Mercy Cancer Care, Busey Bank, CarMax and Tiger Plumbing, Heating, Air Conditioning, and Electrical Services. The American Cancer Society is working every day to advance research, deliver lifesaving programs and services, and ensure continued public discussion about the important issues in cancer. ACS has contributed to great progress in the fight against cancer. The work of ACS has helped lead to a 31% decline in the U.S. cancer death rate from 1991 to 2018, resulting in 3.2 million fewer deaths during that time. With your help, the American Cancer Society can continue its mission to save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer. The ACS Metro East Regional Leadership Board’s campaign Colors of Cancer Metro East participants and volunteers come together to honor cancer survivors, spread the word about reducing cancer risk, and raise money to help the American Cancer Society save lives. Colors of Cancer Metro East unites the community behind the American Cancer Society’s efforts to save lives from cancer.

When you sign up for Colors of Cancer Metro East, the ACS Metro East Regional Leadership Board will be with you every step of the way. The expectation is that you will recruit a candidate for this campaign to help continue the mission of the American Cancer Society. You can either be a candidate yourself or find someone within your workplace or circle to be a candidate (and help cheer them on), and then wear the representative color for cancer awareness of a particular type of cancer. The ACS Metro East Regional Leadership Board provides a toolkit to make fundraising effortless and easy, of which

Facebook fundraising has proved very successful. While this is a fundraising campaign that takes place during the month of April, the board also hopes to bring awareness to whichever type of cancer chosen to be represented. The board will provide another avenue to showcase your support of the community through its website and social media platform.

Why participate?

One in two men and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. ACS needs help to raise the necessary funds and awareness to fight back against this disease.

Planned communities designed with lifestyle in mind

For Home & LIfestyle

People move for many reasons, including a desire to be closer to family or after accepting a job offer. Last year many were spurred by a “you only live once” mentality as life and the world as we knew it suddenly changed. As people consider where to move, master planned communities are garnering more and more attention. The National Association of Realtors reported that, starting in March 2020, one in three adults substituted some or all of their typical work for telework, compared to one in 20 who worked remotely before the pandemic. The uptick of remote work made many people consider moving. North American Moving Services indicated that Illinois, New York, California, New Jersey, and Maryland are the top states people have been leaving, while Idaho, Arizona, South Carolina, Tennessee, and North Carolina have welcomed the most new residents. While master planned

communities once were considered realms for retirees, such areas also can be great for families, and not all MPCs are age-restricted. Many buyers are attracted to these homes because of the sense of community fostered by living in close proximity to neighbors and sharing a number of exclusive amenities. According to Ideal Living magazine, many people flock to MPCs for social outreach. MPCs often have events for residents, including farmer’s markets, food truck nights, concerts, and other community gatherings within the communities. Furthermore, MPCs often are built around golf courses, water parks, nature paths, and other features that physically connect the residents to one another in unique ways. According to the financial information resource The Motley Fool, MPCs have more in common with small cities than traditional subdivisions. These communities have extensive educational, recreational and commercial features. They often have their own school systems, shopping areas,

fitness centers, and business districts. Some are gated; most require an entry pass to use facilities. MPCs can be convenient for anyone who doesn’t want to travel far away from home for most of their daily needs. Furthermore, thanks to exceptional conceptualizing and design, these communities continue to evolve to offer residents in demand services. For example, many builders in MPCs are now including homes that feature designated spaces for home learning and remote working in their floor plans. RCLCO Real Estate Advisors says home sales among their top-selling MPCs in 2020 in the United States were 20 percent higher than in 2019. Communities that top the list are located in Florida, Nevada, Utah, Texas, and North Carolina. Building a sense of community takes on new meaning when people relocate to master planned communities. These developments push lifestyle and active living to the forefront.

What to ask before renting a summer property For Home & Lifestyle

A home away from home can be the ideal retreat for couples, singletons and families. Quite often individuals reserve the same properties year after year to serve as a vacation retreat. The familiarity and comfort of a rental can be the ideal place to spend a few days or weeks during a vacation. Data from HomeAway®, a vacation rental booking service, says that many people book summer rentals as early as January to ensure they have the perfect place to stay during the peak season. However, for vacations taken in July and beyond, locking down one’s stay between May and July are possible. Ski season stays as well as holiday retreats are best booked by October, advises the company. When it comes time to research and book a rental, it is important to note that listings likely won’t paint

the full picture. It is important to ask the right questions and conduct a thorough vetting of properties before booking a rental. • Get the facts of the contract and exactly what the rental entails. Are use of WiFi or cable television available? Are you responsible for taking out the trash and recycling? What is the cancellation policy? Are there any fees incurred for minor damage to the home? The contract should be as thorough as possible so there are no surprises later on. • Explore pet-friendly accommodations. Many people choose to travel with pets, which can make it less stressful than leaving companion animals behind. What may constitute “pet-friendly” to one landlord may not be the same to another. One house may have a fenced yard and a dog house. Another may actually let the pet have free reign of the house without having to be crated. It helps to know the difference in advance. The vacation rental site VRBO says

there is no standard for making a home accommodating to pets. • Learn about parking. The Evolve Vacation Rental Network says to ask the specifics of the parking situation, including whether there is a driveway or on-street parking. If there is on-street parking, find out if the vehicle needs to be moved for street cleaning or specific zoning. • Learn the lingo. For those booking international rentals, certain nuances of the listing lingo may be different than you’re used to. Inquire specifically about the number of rooms and bedrooms so you are properly prepared. • Find out if the kitchen is equipped. Some kitchens come with a ladle and saucepan only, while others may be fully outfitted for gourmet meals. It helps to have an idea so that shopping lists can be made if meals will be prepared at the rental. Careful vetting and a little leg work can help vacationers find the ideal vacation property.

Outdoor improvements that boost home value

For Home & Lifestyle

Whether home improvement projects are design to improve the interior or exterior of a house, focusing on renovations that make the most financial sense can benefit homeowners in the long run. The right renovations can be assets if and when homeowners decide to sell their homes. So how does one get started? First and foremost, speak to a local real estate agent who is knowledgeable about trends in the community. While a swimming pool may be something coveted in one area, it may impede sales in another. It also helps to

study generalized trends and data from various home improvement industry analysts to guide upcoming projects. The following outdoor projects are just a few renovations that tend to add value. • Fire pit: A fire pit is a great place to gather most months of the year. Bob Vila and CBS news report that a fire pit realizes a 78 percent return on investment, or ROI. • Outdoor kitchen: Many buyers are looking to utilize their yards as an extension of interior living areas. Cooking, dining and even watching TV outdoors is increasingly popular. Outdoor living areas can be custom designed and built. In addition, prefabricated modular units that require a much smaller commitment of

time and money are available. • Patio: Homeowners who do not already have a patio will find that adding one can increase a home’s value. Patios help a home look neat, add useable space and may help a home to sell quickly. The experts at Space Wise, a division of Extra Space Storage, say that refinishing, repairing and building a new patio offers strong ROI. • Deck: Deck can be as valuable as patios. A deck is another outdoor space that can be used for entertaining, dining and more. Remodeling magazine’s 2018 “Cost vs. Value” report indicates that an $11,000 deck can add about $9,000 in resale value to the home, recouping around 82 percent

of the project’s costs. • Door update: Improve curb appeal with a new, high-end front door and garage doors. If that’s too expensive, a good cleaning and new coat of paint can make an old door look brand new. These easy fixes can improve a home’s look instantly. • New landscaping: The National Association of Realtors says an outdoor makeover that includes well-thought out landscaping can net 105 percent ROI. Installing a walkway, adding stone planters, mulching, and planting shrubs are ideas to consider. Many different outdoor projects can add value to a home.

The average timelines for popular renovation projects

For Home & Lifestyle

Home renovation projects are significant undertakings. Working with skilled and experienced contractors can ensure projects go smoothly and are completed promptly. Timing is a big consideration for homeowners as they begin renovating their homes, and the home improvement experts at HomeAdvisor note that the following are some general timelines for popular renovation projects. • Home addition: Short of a full-scale demolition and rebuild, home additions are the most time-consuming projects homeowners can undertake. HomeAdvi-

sor notes that its survey of customers who recently completed home addition projects reported that the average time from start to finish was between three and four months. Certain variables, including the scale of the project and the local permits process, can extend the time it takes to complete a home addition. • Kitchen remodel: Scale is a big factor to consider when estimating the time it takes to complete various home improvement projects, and kitchen remodels are no exception. Some HomeAdvisor users reported projects taking as long as four months, though the average time reported was roughly six weeks. Projects that require major overhauls like rearranging

the plumbing and moving walls will likely take longer than more cosmetic projects that are limited to replacing cabinets and countertops. • Bathroom remodel: More than 1,000 homeowners surveyed by HomeAdvisor reported that bathroom remodels took about 4.5 weeks from start to finish. Small-scale remodels that focus on painting the walls a fresh color and replacing existing tiles can be completed in less than two weeks. But like with kitchen remodels, bathroom remodels that involve replacing plumbing fixtures and removing walls figure to take much longer than that. • Siding installation: HomeAdvisor

users report that new siding projects take roughly two weeks from start to finish. That estimate is the same regardless of which materials homeowners are replacing and installing. • Replacement windows: Homeowners who want to replace all the windows in their home can expect such a project to take roughly three weeks. HomeAdvisor notes that such a timeline need not concern homeowners worried that they will be forced to brave the elements during the length of the project. Much of a contractors’ time during a window replacement project will be spent on upfront measuring and then ensuring a tight fit once the windows have been installed.

Alton Little Theater earns 12 nominations for 2 shows

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com

ST. LOUIS — The Alton Little Theater (ALT), with its two productions of “Inherit the Wind” and “The Miracle Worker,” has earned 12 nominations in the Arts For Life’s 2021 Theatre Mask Awards (TMA), six for each. The TMAs will premiere as a virtual ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 3, on the AFL’s YouTube Channel. The awards will be available afterwards for later viewing. Normally, 11 community theater companies participate in the TMAs with awards in 18 categories, but last year’s pandemic shutdown forced show cancellations. Awards in nine non-musical play categories will be announced during the virtual ceremony, with a scaled-back format to reflect the number of eligible plays. “The TMAs were able to do eight shows last year and so the show must go on. Several categories were combined to allow for more nominees,” AFL President Mary McCreight said. ALT staged “Inherit the Wind” in January and February and “The Miracle Worker” in October. “Inherit the Wind” is the fictional account of the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee. “The Miracle Worker” by William Gibson tells the story of Helen Keller, blind and deaf after childhood fever, and her governess and teacher, Annie Sullivan. Specifically, the 2021 Theatre Mask Awards ALT nominees are: • Best Production, “Inherit the Wind” • Best Production, “The Miracle Worker” • Best Director, ALT Executive Director Lee Cox for “Inherit the Wind” • Best Director, Artistic Director Kevin Frakes for “The Miracle Worker” • Best Actor, Howard S. Bell and Shea Maples in “Inherit the Wind” • Best Actress, Emily Schneider and Kya Wonders in “The Miracle Worker” • Best Supporting Actor, Brant McCance in “Inherit the Wind” • Best Costume Design, Cox for “Inherit the Wind” • Best Set Design, Frakes for “The Miracle Worker”

From top, Kevin Frakes, Brant McCance, Shea Maples, Lee Cox, Howard Bell, Emily Schneider and Kya Wonders share 12 Theater Mask Award nomination with their joint casts for “Inherit the Wind” and “The Miracle Worker.” ALT received acknowledgement in acting, direction, design and costuming for the two dramas presented in 2020. (Anne Frakes | For The Edge) • Best Set Design, Frakes for ““Inherit the Wind.” Nominations were announced earlier this month during the nonprofit AFL’s inaugural virtual trivia night. AFL encompasses 140 communities and 8,460 square miles in St. Louis and St. Charles counties in Missouri and Madison, Monroe and St. Clair counties in Illinois. “2020 was a difficult year,” said Tim Naegelin, co-chair of the TMA Steering Committee. “Most theater was cancelled after March, but the TMA Steering Committee and the AFL Board of Directors believed the St. Louis-based Theatre Recognition Guild had reviewed enough shows

to make a successful TMA event. “With only eight shows eligible, some categories have been combined so that we do not lose the integrity of our awards and nominations,” Naegelin said. “To that end, there will not be a division of drama and comedy categories for this year.” Beginning in mid-March 2020, a theater shutdown occurred because of the global COVID-19 pandemic and the closure of performance venues. AFL adopted measures to foster the protection of those who work and play in metropolitan St. Louis-Southwest Illinois community theater groups. “We will continue our charitable

mission of service and recognition once it is safe to do so,” McCreight said. Looking Glass Playhouse, in Lebanon, Illinois, received four 2021 nominations for production, actor, supporting actor and set design for “It’s Only a Play,” a comedy by Terence McNally, presented in March 2020. Over the years it has received 43 nominations. Since 2015, Monroe Actors Stage Company in Waterloo has received 83 nominations; ATL has received more than 80. Last year, AFL transitioned to streamed formats for its TMA and Best Performance Awards (BPA) for musical theater and youth produc-

tions honoring shows in 2019. This year, the latter has been canceled. The few musicals performed in early 2020 will be considered for the 2022 awards. “Arts for Life is plugging along with theater-starved actors for a new day,” McCreight said. AFL was founded in 1994 by Lucinda Guyrci. The BPAs have honored musical theater since 1999; the TMAs have honored plays since 2015. Meet your new parks coordinator

By Charles Bolinger Hearst Newspapers

EDWARDSVILLE — Caneé Brown is the Edwardsville Parks and Recreation Department’s newest employee. An Edwardsville native, Brown started working as the department’s coordinator on March 16. “I’m excited to be here,” she said. “Everyone’s been awesome and I’m ready to start working with youth sports and adult recreation.” Her supervisor, Trevor Spohr, said it was always in the plan to hire another, full-time parks employee when he and the rest of director Nate Tingley’s staff came on board early last year. “When I met Caneé, she was a captain in a kickball league,” Spohr recalled. “She told me, ‘I love parks and recreation and I have a heart for Edwardsville.’” Spohr told her that his department would have a position open later this year and Brown asked him to remind her when it was open because she was definitely interested. She later applied and during the telephone interview with Spohr and special events coordinator, Trina Vetter, he said her extroverted nature and her

directness, plus the fact that she is a resident, were all qualities Spohr sought in his coordinator. “There was a spark,” he recalled. That spark did not diminish as the interview process progressed to include human resources director Amanda Tucker and parks director Tingley. “She brings an energy and passion that I wanted,” Spohr said. Spohr and Brown share an office but they’re not in it all day together. As coordinator, it’s Brown’s job to oversee the various sports leagues, the Splash Pad in Leon Corlew Park, the SIUE Pool and Plummer Family Park while Spohr handles the administrative and office tasks. Brown said she previously worked for Federal Express and she has coached youth basketball games, among other youth mentoring opportunities. Food For Thought… with Vicki Bennington

It’s getting hot in here!

By Vicki Bennington For The Edge

EDWARDSVILLE — Don’t let the name fool you. Buffalo Wild Wings (BWW) in Edwardsville has more than just hot wings. There are wings of every level of hotness, and so Vicki much more. Bennington And for connoisseurs of hot, hot

wings, buffalo is definitely on the menu, too. We love to go out for appetizers. You know, when you are out on a Sunday afternoon, and it’s too early for dinner, but you want something to munch on. We stopped by BWW recently and tried the “House Sampler,” because we just couldn’t quite

The “House Sampler” offers a wide variety of things to try from the appetizer menu. (Vicki Bennington | For The Edge)

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, April 8, 2021 • 21 decide what sounded the best. Ultimate nachos with chicken were the first thing we tried, and in and of them themselves, they were filling and tasty. The beer-battered onion rings were one of my favorites with southwestern ranch sauce, and though I don’t eat mozzarella sticks, my husband said they were cooked just right, dipped in marinara sauce. The boneless wings with a mild teriyaki sauce gave us a chance to try what the restaurant is famous far, and they did not disappoint, especially when dipped in ranch dressing. These are just a few of their most popular apps, but they also have fried pickles, which sounded great, potato wedges, street tacos, Asian zing cauliflower wings and even chicken quesadillas. If you are up for a full meal, there’s traditional wings, cauliflower wings, hand-breaded tenders (I’ve had these in the past, and they are tender and juicy), naked tenders, and any can be sauced with your choiceytv of hotness level. And once you’ve figured out your favorite flavor, you can buy a bottle to take home, as well as a bottle of seasoning, like the salt and vinegar or lemon pepper. Try the wing bundles, especially if you want to take them home to share with other family members. They come with fries or in a fan box with nachos.

The buffalo wedge salad, chopped cobb salad or chicken Caesar can serve as a nice side or a meal all by itself. There are also burgers and sandwiches, so you don’t have to stick with wings if you want venture out for something different. Wraps range from buffalo ranch chicken to pepper jack steak. There’s even a kid’s menu and desserts, so the whole family can feel comfortable – and satisfied. BWW’s drink list includes draft beer choices, soft drinks and cocktails. And if you’ve ever been there, you know the atmosphere is party-like. If A there’s a game on one of the big TVs, the crowd gets involved and it’s the next best thing to being there. But even on a Sunday afternoon when there’s not a particular sport to watch, it just feels fun. Try it. You know you will like it. In case you don’t know, the address is 248 Harvard Drive in Edwardsville. For more information, visit www.buffalowildwings. com.

Menards to anchor Orchard Town Center

By Charles Bolinger For The Edge

GLEN CARBON — After months of rumors, a committee agenda noted a Menards will anchor the new Orchard Town Center development in Glen Carbon. The building and development committee unanimously approved a general site plan for Orchard Town Center and a specific one for Menards plus two requested variances, one for signage and the other for parking. Tim Lowe, vice president of leasing and development at Staenberg Group, gave the latest project overview. “We have through this summer to due diligence; we are currently in the process of completing that exercise,” Lowe began. He said Staenberg is under contract with Menards, which will buy and self-develop 18.6 acres of the property for its store, Lowe said. In the Metro East, the only other Menards is in O’Fallon, about 10 miles away. “We’re real happy that they’re joining us, they bring a whole group of tenants with them that like being in projects anchored by Menards,” Lowe said. “Ultimately, our project has three components, an anchor store, 12 outlots and about 50,000-square-feet with junior anchor tenants, adjacent to Menards.” He said the outlots could become a variety of things – fast food, quick serve, sit-down restaurants, service business, urgent care, a little office building or a multi-tenant building. “We’ve had a lot of great interest from some of the fast-food guys and some of the quick serve guys,” Lowe said. He said the plan now is to open six of the 12 outlots with Menards opening and to open the remainder of the outlots later. The site will also hug Madison County Transit’s Goshen Trail, with opportunities for cyclists to shop for small items or to dine. Lowe said the plan is to close on the site this summer and to start construction, with opening tenants like Menards and at least six outlots next summer and the remainder of the outlots and the multitenant retail building opening in the summer of 2023. Tyler Edwards, the real estate representative for Menards, spoke via Zoom. “We have been looking for the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon region for almost 10 years now, but we never found the right spot,” Edwards said. “We opened the O’Fallon store to great success and a lot of people from Edwardsville and Glen Car-

Tim Low with Staenberg Group believes, if ground is broken this summer, that a Menards and at least six outlots will be ready to open next summer at Orchard Town Center in Glen Carbon. (For The Edge)

bon have asked for a store closer to their homes for many years.” While Menards will comprise 209,000-square-feet, only about 93,000-square-feet of it will be navigable on foot. Due to this, Menards requested a parking variance for fewer parking spaces. The O’Fallon and Glen Carbon stores will be the same size, Edwards said. Edwards said unlike other retails stores such as Target or Walmart, Menards’ parking patterns and traffic flow are different. “Consider the split in traffic to Menards, half of the daily trips are made by contractors during work hours, the other half are made by homeowners in the evenings and on weekends,” Edwards wrote in a letter to the village board. “A grocery store or a Target may need to plan for 90 percent of their daily traffic [between] 4 and 6 p.m.; Menards does not because it doesn’t have half of its traffic shopping during the day.” Edwards said the parking lot space may be 320 to 350 parking spaces versus 432 spaces that were approved, according to

Village Administrator Jamie Bowden. “Parking per foot also does not consider what is being sold. A store like Walmart can fit a lot of toothpaste, shaving cream and deodorant in one aisle, Menards can fit about four bathtubs in one aisle,” Edwards wrote. “There are cases where Menards sells small items like drill bits and Walmart sells big items like desks, but for the most part, Menards sells more bulky items than any other retailer and those take up a lot of space.” The next stop for both plans and variances will be at the village’s planning and zoning board in mid-April. Orchard Town Center is the village’s latest retail development, slated to rise over the next two years or so on the former Foucek property, which had been a tree nursery since the late 1940s. The new development will encompass 51.39 acres versus the previously reported 54 acres and will have an anchor store, up to four junior anchors and 12 outlots. The outlots will be placed on the south side of Governors’ Parkway and on the west side of

Troy Road. A major stumbling block in developing this site in the past has been mine subsidence but Staenberg Group, which has the site under contract and is leading this project, believes it has a solution to that. As reported earlier this month, Madison County Mine No. 4 used to underlie the site, extracting coal from the Herrin Coal Seam. The mine operated between 1920 and 1940. Filling the underground void left behind will require between 56,000- and 85,000-cubic-yards of grout to mitigate any sag subsidence, which is estimated at one to 2.5 feet without the grout. Currently two entrances/exits from Troy Road are planned, along with a third to Governors’ Parkway, a fourth to Plum Street and a right-out only is proposed for Center Grove Road. Between the outlots and Troy Road will be three stormwater detention areas, with two additional detention ponds flanking the Plum Street entrance and another just outside of the Menard footprint, next to the Goshen Trail.

Kong, Godzilla fight for right to defend humanity By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge EDWARDSVILLE — I have spent much of the previous week in a serious state of excitement because this week, unlike most others, allowed me the chance to see a new movie in a new theater. For the first time since 2015, when AMC launched the beautiful Streets Of St. Charles location, the greater St. Louis area has a new cinema to make my stomping grounds and to play in. This one — Neighborhood Cinema Group (NCG) — is in the Metro East. NCG has opened an eight-screen movie theater at Alton Square Mall, where Sears used to be, and I was there on opening night to see for myself what treats lay in store for us here in Madison County. NCG is a small, Midwestern chain, with just over two dozen locations, headquartered out of Michigan. The theater itself has been built out of the back part of the mall, behind JCPenney. The space is tightly configured and makes excellent use of its sightlines through the lobby and common areas. I would call the simple concept a cross between industrial chic and “Saved by the Bell” cool. The cashier stand and concession equipment operations were separated by a wall, which is a unique look. The menu features typical moviegoer fare and the popcorn smelled delicious. Beer and wine were for sale alongside a bank of Coke Freestyle and ICEE drink dispensers. The auditoria are of a typical “black box” design, featuring reclining seats and tray table attachments. Seat counts range from roughly 44 to 150 (with social distancing being strictly enforced). I particularly loved the electronic

advertisement cases in the lobby, one-sheet posters with motion. If I was thrilled at the prospect of having NCG Alton to add to our list of local moviehouses, I was less certain about my choice of movie. “Godzilla vs. Kong” was a head-scratcher at times, full of unbelievability, and never less than groan-inducing. Since Legendary Entertainment reincarnated its “MonsterVerse” in 2014, Godzilla and King Kong have been back in the limelight where they’ve always toiled. This movie, though, is the first of the four that’s made me note how awful the sustainability outlook for this franchise is. By the 30-minute mark, I realized that someone had decided to take the best trait of the movie (the hook about shadowy corporate and/or government-military organizations called APEX and MONARCH and Hollow Earth mumbo jumbo) and make it the focal point of a special effects-laden mash-

up. Essentially, the movie is a battle between King Kong and Godzilla for their right to defend humanity from itself, I think. Alexander Skarsgard is a scientist trying to transport the beasts to their original home at the center of the Earth. Rebecca Hall hangs around to annoyingly acquiesce to his every stupid suggestion. Millie Bobby Brown’s character is still a student, but somehow moves about internationally at her own whim. By the time the monsters are duking it out with the lame-looking robot Mechagodzilla, I was too baffled to understand what was happening or why. Not even Brian Tyree Henry could not save this movie; I should have watched Bob Odenkirk in “Nobody” for a second time.

This image released by Warner Bros. Entertainment shows a scene from “Godzilla vs. Kong.”

“Godzilla vs. Kong” runs 113 minutes and is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of creature violence/destruction and brief language. I give this film one star out of four.

Wineries hope warmer weather brings pandemic recovery The Edge

SPRINGFIELD — Wineries and vineyards in Illinois are hoping for a strong recovery after more than a year of widespread disruption caused by the pandemic. Wineries and vineyards faced significant drops in revenue at the same time costs skyrocketed as they sought to keep up with complex health and safety regulations, including investing in personal protective equipment, sanitation services and carry out and delivery operations. Small and mid-sized wineries and vineyards also faced a steep decline in their events business, with weddings, reunions, corporate retreats and other large events put on hold for much of the last year. Many relied on the Paycheck Protection Program and disaster loans to survive. “Illinois wineries and vineyards are not only important economic drivers in their communities, they are key to the state’s overall tourism industry,” said Lisa Ellis, Executive Director of the Illinois Grape Growers and Vintners Alliance. “Between skyrocketing operation costs and limited revenue streams, COVID-19 has resulted in many of these businesses struggling to survive,” she said. “It’s a critical time for the hospitality industry, and we will need the continued support of state officials to recover fully.” Illinois’ wine industry employed 36,403 people and generated $2.98 billion in economic activity in 2019, according to an economic impact study conducted by the Illinois Grape Growers & Vintners Alliance. To begin recovering and returning to pre-pandemic business levels, operators of Illinois’ wineries and vineyards say they will need the continued support of their communities. “We were lucky to receive support from the community, including many who took advantage of our ability to safely serve customers outdoors,” said Diane Hahn, owner of Mackinaw Valley Vineyard in Tazewell County. “However, our events and weddings business took a significant hit, and our overall revenue was down

more than 50 percent compared to normal years, while the costs that go into running a business remained. “We look forward to welcoming people back to our various events and helping local nonprofits with their fundraising efforts to help them recover lost financial ground,” she said. “Our communities are stronger when we work together, and as the state prepares for further reopening we encourage everyone to support local businesses. Local matters, now more than ever.” The impact of the pandemic on Illinois’ hospitality industry includes: • Loss in on-premise wine and alcohol sales, with volume sales down more than 46.8 percent in 2020 compared to 2019. This change has resulted in extensive job and economic losses for neighborhood businesses. • Reductions in sales at winery tasting rooms. Though direct-to-consumer shipments have increased during the pandemic, it has not come close to compensating for the loss of wine sales by restaurants and bars. • Drops in sales to restaurants, bars and taverns, with 30 percent of establishments not placing new wine and beer orders since the pandemic began.
