“It’ssixactorsplayingsixdifferentpartseach.Itstartsinancient Greece(andstretchesto)modern-dayAmerica,and(depicts)the insanityofputtingonatheaterproduction–andhowithasn’t changed,”Ursonesaid.

AfterGreecetheaudienceishurtledtoShakespeare’sEngland, jogsovertoFrance’sPalaceofVersailles,visitsrevolutionaryRussiaduringthelate19thcentury,landsinCoconutGroveinthe1960s, andthentoday.

OnehisfriendsaskedRitchiewhathisbrotherdidforaliving. “Ididn’twanttosay,‘heworksininsurance,’soinsteadIsaid,‘oh, he’sinapunkrockband,’”Ritchiesaid.

Thefriendthenaskedwhatthenameofthebandwas.Ritchie pausedforasecondtocomeupwithaname–“‘It’scalled‘TheViolentFemmes,’Isaid.Noideawhereitcamefrom.”

“Wow,that’sagreatname,”hisfriendsaid.Ritchieagreed.Hewent backtohisfriend,ViolentFemmes’drummerVictorDeLorenzo,and said,“wehavethename.Nowwejusthavetostarttheband.”

Ritchiesaidheenjoyedspendingtimedownunderon tour.AfterspendingseveralholidaysinAustraliaand makingalotoffriends,eventuallyheandhiswifedecidedtomovethere.Theybecameestablishedcitizens in2012.

Inordertoestablishdual-residency,Ritchieobtaineda distinguishedtalentvisa,whichisofferedtothosewho haveaninternationalrecordofexceptionalandoutstandingtalentinaneligible field.

Thistypeofvisarequiresasponsor,andtocomplete theperfect1980sequation,Ritchiewassponsoredby Australiannativesandhitmakersintheirownright,MidnightOil.

Ritchiehasmadenosecretovertheyearsof someofthestrained,interpersonaldynamics amongstbandmembers,andcommentedonthe issueofbandmembersclashing.

“ThiscouldbethesubjectofanumberofPhD’s,” hesaid,laughing.“Weareindividualswhoareoftensetinourways.Butwearegoingon42years –that’slongerthanmostmarriages.”

The“romanticidea”ofbandmembersbeing bestfriendsisan“unnaturalparadigm,”headded.Thisideawaspartiallyinfluencedbythestart ofTheBeatles,Ritchiesaid.

“Theywere22yearsoldandthemusicthey madewasgreat,buttheoriginalnarrativewas theywerebuddies.Inthemovietheyshowed themsleepinginthesamebed,”hesaid.“Then everyotherbandboughtintothisconcept.But regardless,whilethere’sastrengthinbeingan

individual,agoodmusicianisalwaysbetterwith theirband.”

“SpringsteenisalwaysbetterwiththeEStreet Band.MickJaggerisgreat,buthowoftendo youlistentohissoloalbums,”headded.

Initsinauguralyear,therebranded ensemble(formerlyStamfordSymphony)reachednewaudiencesthrougha varietyofinitiativesinformed“withimmenseconsiderationforthecommunity,”MusicDirectorMichaelSternsaid. “Ilovedherandshelovedme.Longafter‘House’we’dtexteach otheraftergoingthroughthedictionaryandsendeachotherthe longestandbiggestcrazywords–shelovedthewordplay.Iwas sohappytoworkwithher,”hesaid.

Moseleysaidheenjoyedearlyscience fiction-typehorrorand HammerFilmproductions,withhisfavoritebeing“TheBrainThat wouldn’tDie.”

LongbeforeMoseleygotproficientatscaringallofus,hepracticedandsucceededatscaringhimself–staringathimselfinthe mirrorconvincedsomethingwasgettingcloserandcloserbehind him,untilhebrokeintoablood-curdlingscream.

Moseleyalsopointedoutthathisfatherwasatoughfootball player/Marinetype,buthegotveryaffectionatelycelebratory aroundHalloween.

Hehasalsofoundhiscareerhasbenefitedhisownfatherhood experience–notingthataftertakinghischildrentoseethemovie “Candyman,”hisdaughterwokeupwithnightmares.

“Isaid,honey,yourdaddyisChopTop[hischaracterfromTexas ChainsawMassacre2]–ChopTopbeatsCandymananyday,”hesaid.

Moseleyhascollaboratedwithhis“House”director,Zombie,and someoftheotheractorshe’sworkedwithafewtimes.Hesaidhe enjoysrepeatedlycollaboratingwithdirectorslikeZombiewholet himbepartofthecreativeprocess.

“Therearesomedirectorswhojusthavetheirownplanandwon’t deviatefromthat.ButdirectorslikeRoblistentomyinput–and sometimesletmeimprovise,”hesaid.

Moseleyisalsoamusician,andpointsoutthatmoviesanda soundtrackgohandinhand.

“It’sessential–whetherits‘TheDevil’sRejects’or‘2001-ASpace Odyssey’,reallymemorablesoundtracksandthechoiceoftunes, especiallyasthecreditsroll,aresoimportant,”hesaid.

Moseleyaddedthatwhenhewritesmusic,hewantsthelistener toclosetheireyesandbeabletoimaginethepicturehe’spainting. “Well,notallofthem,”hesaid,laughing.

AsfarastheupcomingCTHorrorFest,Moseleysayshehasthe utmostrespectforhisfans.

“Withoutthefans,wedon’treallygetanywork.AndI’mafantoo, soitmakesitaloteasiertoempathize,”hesaid.

Moseleysaidheisveryawarethatit’sjustasimportanttobeas friendlyandinformativetothelastpersoninlineasthe first.

“That’saresponsibilityweallhave–don’tscrewit.Whentheydo comeinandmeetyouandgetachancetocomeinandkickyour tires,Ialwaystrytodoagoodjob,”hesaid.“I’vehadabadexperiencewhenmeetingmyheroes,anditreallychangesthings.”

Themainstageisn’ttheonlyplacetoseeOrchestraLumosinaction.Duringitsinaugural

season,orchestramembersperformedinunconventionallocationsfromGreenwichtoBridgeportaspartoftheSmallSpaceSeries.Theseriesfeaturessmallerensembles—duos,string quartetsandquintets,andbrassandwindconsorts—performingasweepingvarietyofrepertoireinintimatevenues.

Thisseason,audiencescan findtheorchestra’stalentedmusiciansinthefollowinglocations:FirstCongregationalChurchandFirstUnitedMethodistChurch(Greenwich);Stamford’s FishChurch,St.FrancisChurch,andtheStamfordMuseumandNatureCenter;FirstPresbyterianChurchofNewCanaan;St.Paul’sonthe Green(Norwalk);andTheWestportLibrary.

“Bybringingourmusiciansdirectlyintothese communities,we’reabletomeetaudiences wheretheyareandprovideadifferentwaytoexperienceorchestralmusicintheseuniqueand intimatespaces,”Towerssaid.

MusicEducation

In2023-24,OrchestraLumoswillexpandon itsbilingualstorytimeseriesandchambermusicandprivatecoachingswithyoungmusicians. Theseinitiativeshelpensurethatallchildrenin

FairfieldCounty—regardlessoftheirbackgroundorcircumstances—havegreateraccess tomusiceducation.

“Directengagementwiththecommunityiskeyfor ustobuildmeaningfulrelationshipswithourresidents,andtoseeourresidentsbuildmeaningful relationshipswithclassicalmusic,”incomingDirectorofCommunityEngagementAnthonyParce said.“Thecomingseasonrenewsourdrivetoexpandourimpact,andwelookforwardtoinspiring continuedmusiclearningandmusicmaking.”

History

Althoughthebuildingopenedin1922andjustcelebrateditscentennialanniversary,therenovatedtheaterhasonlybeenoperating forthepast19years.Aturningpointcamein2004whenthestate committed$200milliontobuildanartsandeducationcorridorin downtownWaterbury.

Aspartoftheproject,thetheaterunderwenta$30millionrestorationtopreserveitshistoricnatureandmakeitfunctionalforprogrammingpurposes.Thefundingwasalsousedtocreateanarts magnetschoolformiddleandhighschoolstudents,whouseThe Palace’sstageasaperformancespace.

“Ourmissionistoeducate,entertain,andinformasmanypeople aspossible,”CEOFrankTaverasaid.“WeofferadiversityofprogrammingfromBroadwaymusicalstohistoricmusicacts,so there’ssomethingforeveryoneregardlessoftheir financialstatus, race,creed,orinterest.”

ThePalace’supcomingseasonis filledwithopportunitiesthatare entertainingandeducational.

Onehighly-anticipatedtitle,“ToKillAMockingbird,”hitsthestage Nov.3-5.HarperLee’snovelaboutraceandjusticeintheDepression-eraSouthgetsthe“page-to-stage”treatment,reverberatingwith “contemporaryconversationsthatcontinuetothisday,”Taverasaid. RichardThomas(“TheWaltons”)leadsthecastasAtticusFinch.

Inanefforttocreateeducationalconnectionswithareastudents throughthearts,ThePalaceoffersafter-schoolprogramsthatcoincidewithcertainshowsitpresents.Thisseason’spicksare“On YourFeet!TheStoryofEmilio&GloriaEstefan”(Dec.15-16)and “Hairspray”(Jan.16-18,2024).

“‘OnYourFeet’isaboutcelebratingyourheritagewhilegrowing throughthechallengesoflife,and‘Hairspray’presentsissuesabout segregationandgender,”Taverasaid.“Wetouchonthesetopicsin ourcurriculumanddiscusshowthey’retranslatedintopopular piecesofmusicaltheatre.”
