NHS Norfolk Chair supports Thetford Healthy Town Sheila Childerhouse, Chair of NHS Norfolk, has spoken of her support for Thetford Healthy Town, and is urging local residents to get involved in the project. Mrs Childerhouse, who lives near Thetford, said: "The health and wellbeing of people in Thetford was made a top priority with the launch of 'Thetford Healthy Town'. "The aim continues to be to help local people adopt a healthy lifestyle, and NHS Norfolk is proud to publicise the project." NHS Norfolk teamed up with Breckland Council and a host of other organisations to deliver the two-year action plan under the Thetford Healthy Town banner. Mrs Childerhouse officially launched the initiative on September 24, 2009, with Breckland Council’s Executive Member for Communities and Benefits, Theresa Hewett. Mrs Childerhouse, whose family have farmed in Norfolk for generations, said: "Thetford is somewhere that has lots of exciting opportunities and we are pleased that the public are grasping them. Thetford Healthy Town is a huge opportunity to accelerate the progress we have made in improving people's lifestyles and lives. Our main goals are to get people to take part in more physical activity, encourage healthier food choices, and tackle obesity. We aim to create an environment which promotes healthy living, and a range of activities for people of all ages. We are delighted to work with Breckland District Council on this project, and hope that this partnership working will benefit residents around the area." Mrs Childerhouse is particularly keen to support 'Sustrans Bike It', an initiative which to encourages people to leave the car in the drive and cycle instead. A keen cyclist herself, she recently took part in the Ride for Life for the third year running, raising funds for East Anglia's Children's Hospices. She said: "Department of Health figures show that obesity costs the NHS £1 billion a year. Still, fewer than one in five people in Norfolk are doing the recommended 5 x 30 minutes exercise per week, and fewer than one in four people are eating five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. "We understand that in today's 24/7 society, it can be difficult to adopt a healthy lifestyle all the time. That's why Thetford Healthy Town was created - to make it easier for people to become more healthy through a range of exciting activities, from gardening to dancing and boxing to walking. "Life expectancy in Norfolk is between 78-82 years. In some parts of Thetford it is 74.7 years - and Thetford Healthy Town aims to address that. This is a fun way to meet new people, make new friends, and do something enjoyable at the same time." Green Ventures “Hi. My name is Owen and I am 10 years old. I got a nice surprise this week from my mum. My old bike was too small for me so my mum took me to the Green Ventures shop in Thetford (39 Brunel Way). I didn’t know there was such a place and couldn’t believe all the bikes they have there! The men who work there were really nice and friendly and helped me choose a bike which was right for me. I chose a green Kawasaki. They also explained to me how they got all the bikes and how they repair or fix bikes people no longer want. Some bikes they receive are from the land fill sites and are really good and can be used again. People also donate old bikes they no longer want. They have bikes at the shop which look really great which you can buy straight away. My mum also bought a nice blue bike so we can go riding together. I CAN’T WAIT!” For further information about the project please contact Alan Flack/Chris Norton on 01842 821459 or email green.ventures@keystonetrust.org.uk

Men’s Health Week A huge THANK YOU to Parkwood Leisure Centre and local Fire Fighters from Thetford for their the time and enthusiasm when they joined us at the famous ‘yellow gazebo’ which is now a familiar site within your town. On Tuesday 15th June, during ‘Men’s Health Week’, with the sun shining down, staff from Parkwood Leisure Centre bought a rowing machine into the town centre. Unsuspecting shoppers were taken aback when a fire truck stopped outside the gazebo and 5 burly Fire Fighters got out and took it in turns to ‘row’ to show support for the event. Some children were also lucky enough to look inside the fire truck and ask the fire fighters questions. There was a serious message however, as physically active men are likely to be healthier in a number of ways including lowering their risk of diabetes, bowel cancer, dementia and depression. Got a question or want to speak to a member of the team? enquiries@thetfordhealthytown.co.uk

healthy meal ideas One of the main reasons people eat an unhealthy diet is that they just don't have the time or money to make something nutritious and reasonably low fat. We all know how it is - you come home from work or outside exhausted and hungry and wolf down a cheese toastie and then order a take-away for the whole family. With a little bit of inspiration and planning, however, you can eat tasty, healthy food that doesn't break the bank - every day of the week! It can even save you money.

Low sugar healthy snacks for kids We wouldn't let our kids eat sugar straight from the sugar bowl. But we tend not to think about the sugar hiding in the other things they eat and drink. Excess sugar can mean excess energy which in turn can lead to stored fat in the body and diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease. To prevent this, many families are making Sugar Swaps. They're swapping food and drink with added sugar for stuff that's lower in sugar or sugar free. In particular, more than a quarter of the added sugar in kids' diets comes from sugary drinks. So swapping to water, milk (ideally semi-skimmed), sugar free drinks, sugar free squash, or unsweetened fruit juice really makes a difference.

did you know... On average, every minute of walking can extend your life by 1.5 to 2 minutes. That's about a 2 for 1 trade -off!

Though now retired, Bernard has been an active person all his life and loves DIY, gardening and being out in the fresh air. He said “Being active in body also keeps the mind active. 5 a day fruit and veg Eating more fruit and veg is important for us all, but how many of us actually manage to eat 5 A DAY? Fruit and veg are packed with essential vitamins, minerals and fibre which may help reduce the risk of nasty diseases like cancer and heart disease. So it’s important for kids to eat a variety of at least five portions of fruit and veg every day. What’s more it can be easier than you think to give kids five portions of fruit and veg a day. Canned, frozen, 100% juice and dried fruit and veg all count towards 5 A DAY as well as fresh produce. You can keep the costs down too by buying canned and frozen fruit and veg which doesn’t go off as quickly and buying fresh fruit and veg when it’s in season is usually cheaper. There are so many ways of getting to five portions a day. Why not try adding vegetables to favourite foods such as spaghetti bolognaise or mixing them into a sauce to give it more colour and flavour. Or, how about giving a handful of tasty raisins as a treat? All school dinners include at least two portions of fruit or veg so that’s another way of getting them toward their 5 A DAY.
