Many of our Thetford Healthy Town projects are really taking off and we have had numerous good news stories from various individuals of Thetford. One such case is from Theresa Carter. Theresa started the Healthy Living Programme as she was keen to be motivated and learn more on healthy lifestyles choices. Theresa found the session on portion control very enlightening and found chair exercise a great way to improve health. After the first chair based exercise, Theresa commented that she felt more limber, alert and invigorated and the walk home seemed to take less time!. Over the 10 weeks Theresa followed recommended guidelines, discussed her progress weekly and a

significant improvement was noted in her baseline measurements. Theresa lost weight and her blood pressure reduced to normal levels. ‘I would like to say how much I’ve enjoyed this 10 week course. I have benefited from the exercise session and the home exercise programme. We learnt a lot about healthy eating, including portion control and having a balanced diet. Keeping a daily diary was a very good idea. We also became more aware of different nutritional information which is coded on products. I would like to thank Michelle and wish her luck for the future’.

“Hello, my name is Robyn Challis and I’m the new META Manager at the Keystone Development Trust. META stands for Mobile Europeans Taking Action and consists of a range of services for the migrant European communities in Thetford based at The Limes, 32 Bridge Street. We offer an information and support service staffed by migrant workers who speak a range of community languages, and deal with queries on topics such as employment, housing, training – any query that a migrant worker has about life in the UK. If we can’t provide the right information ourselves, we will refer clients to a service that can. On Mondays and Tuesdays, staff from Breckland Council are also available to assist clients with their enquiries. Much of our work contributes to the Thetford Healthy Town initiative. META is delivering a Stop Smoking Service to migrant Europeans and we are happy to accept referrals from members of the public and from outside agencies, such as GPs. We are also working hard to raise awareness within the migrant European communities of all the health services available to them locally, and provide direct assistance with registering with GPs. Thetford Healthy Town is for everybody, so please do come and see us and find out about all the Healthy Town initiatives including Health Trainers, Health Walks, etc”. Norwich Road Goes Bike Mad! Norwich Road Community School joined the Sustrans Bike It project in May and have since gone bike mad! Since joining, the school has seen the number of regular cyclists and scooters go from 10 daily to 45! On a particular ‘Doctor Bike’ day, Georgie and her Bike It volunteer, Lee Woodcock, safety checked and made minor repairs on 98 bikes. The following week at the Bike It breakfast, 120 children arrived to school on wheels! One mother said “it used to take me 10 minutes to drive to school with the traffic, but cycling takes only 5 minutes!” Norwich Road teacher and super Bike It champion, Natalie Humphrey, has just brought herself a folding bike from the Green Ventures recycling project and is looking forward to jumping back in the saddle once again. The school are wrapping up the term with a bicycle recycling day, getting parents to bring in bikes that are no longer used so that they can be redistributed to children without bikes. If your school is not yet taking advantage of this fantastic scheme, then please contact the Bike It Officer, Georgie Burr on 01842 757349 / 07973 128206.

Community Nursing & Therapy The Community Nursing and Therapy Team held an information event at the Thetford Healthy Town Gazebo on 22nd June 2010 as part of Age UK National Falls Awareness Week. With one in three people in later life suffering from a fall each year,[1] Age UK, the new force combining Age Concern and Help the Aged, is encouraging older people to find out more about falls prevention and get involved in local activities.

The focus of this year’s National Falls Awareness Week was on strength and balance, raising awareness of some simple steps older people can take to avoid a fall in later life. The event included information on local teams including the Community Rehab Team and local initiatives including Walking for Health, Tai Chi, Keep Fit and Yoga. Remaining fit, active and independent is vital in reducing the risks of falls. A representative was present from the Community Nursing Team to take blood pressure which can be a cause of falling. Thetford is part of an Integrated Care Organisation pilot centered around falls and encouraging an awareness of the risk of falling and the importance of an active lifestyle is key. One member of the nursing team said “There is a lot on offer in Thetford and plenty to support people in participating in an active lifestyle and it was refreshing to work with Thetford Healthy Town, the Health Connectors and Trainers as well as local providers of activities to raise awareness and promote activity”. 1.UK is the new force combining Age Concern and Help the Aged. The Age UK family includes Age Scotland, Age Cymru and Age NI.

Thetford Legs Club- Come and visit them at the Thetford Healthy Town gazebo! Those of us who have good mobility perhaps, we tend take our legs for granted, but keeping them in good condition is so important for maintaining independence and keeping that movement. The Thetford Legs Club aims to help us do just that. They meet weekly at the Methodist Church Hall on Wednesdays from 9am -12pm. It is a drop-in session where your first appointment is likely to take about 45 minutes and you will be a general assessment. The Legs Club can help with treatment and advice for anyone who has concerns about their legs; this could perhaps be something you experience during pregnancy, after a trauma, pain with ulcers or oedema, or through carrying excessive weight. Whatever the problem the Legs Club is there to help!

Cycling confidence and cycling freedom for the residents of Thetford. Does your child seem ready to ride without stabilisers but perhaps needs a bit of extra help? Bring them to Sustrans summertime ‘ditch the stabilisers’ sessions. It was a great success at Drake Infant school, where Georgie and two teaching staff taught 15 children to ride in 1 hour! So there will be two (and maybe more) sessions in the summer holidays! Plus, if you haven’t been on your bike for a long time and would like to regain some cycling confidence then book onto the Adult cycle training course which will take place on 3rd September. “I guarantee you’ll feel more confident and have fun after the day. You could even show off your new skills at the Thetford Charity Bike Ride on 5th Sept at the Thetford Charity Fun Day!” said Georgie, Sustrans Bike It Officer. Contact the Bike It Officer, Georgie Burr on 01842 757349 / 07973 128206.

The club provides a relaxed and friendly setting in which to discuss your concerns and where you will be able to have a chat and a coffee too! If you would like more information on the club, contact Christine on 01842 754303 or come and have a chat with the team outside Boots on Kings Street on Tuesday 3rd August from 10am-2pm at the THT gazebo.

Why not become a Walk Leader? Could you help your community or group enjoy the outdoors and become more active? Then why not become a “Walk Leader”? Many people would like to enjoy the outdoors, be active and feel happier and healthier. Did you know walking is an excellent way to achieve all of this? Are you unsure how and where to start, or would you like a group to walk with? Health walks are a short walk (from 1-4 miles), walked regularly, and slightly faster than a gentle stroll. The Breckland and Brandon “Walking for Health Scheme” can offer free training for people who would like to become volunteer ‘Health Walk Leaders’; either to help with the scheme’s organised walks or to lead walks for your own group.

The training is an informal day, covering all aspects of organising and leading a health walk. No previous experience is necessary. For further information or to register your interest on the next course on the 10th August. Please contact the scheme’s coordinator Malcolm Bellingham on 01842 757351 or 07747 077159/malcolm.bellingham@yahoo.com

The Bishops School get brand Green Bat Boxes! new bike storage and look back on a few terms of Bike It! The Bishops Junior School was the first junior school to join the Bike It project in Thetford and have enjoyed every minute of being a Bike It school. Georgie, Sustrans Bike It Officer said “The Bishops have gone from a school with only a handful of cyclists to a regular number of 20. They didn’t used to have any storage for bikes, but have recently been granted funding from Sustrans towards the costs of their new groovy storage (pictured). We have run loads of bike it events at the school, from entering a virtual race, to having bike tea parties, to washing bikes. I’ve enjoyed every minute of working with the children and staff, especially Carl my amazing champion at the Bishops and can’t wait for more Bike It fun in the new school year”. Clare Cook, The Bishops Headteacher said “When I first arrived at the school in September 09 only two or three children rode their bikes to school. They did so in an unsafe manner and there was nowhere for them to safely leave their bikes. Now in July 10 we have more than twenty bike riders coming to school each day safely and there is a place to store their bikes. What an achievement by the Bike It team!” Contact the Bike It Officer, Georgie Burr on 01842 757349 / 07973 128206

Determined not to be defeated by the rain the Green Gym borrowed the Thetford Healthy Town gazebo and set up camp on the BTO nature reserve to make the bat boxes as planned. After the initial measuring up was completed, the hard work began. Normally these would be cut out using a circular saw, but that’s not the Green Gym way! Lots of elbow grease was needed to cut out all of the panels needed to construct the boxes. Everyone worked together as a team taking it in turns with the sawing. By the end of the session we had enough panels to make up 4 boxes which will be completed at another session. With the target of 12 to make, a few more sessions will be needed. If you would like to come along and help, have a work out and create new homes for bats, please see the contact details below Jane Delaney, Thetford Green Gym Project Officer on 01842 757349/07836 624135 or gg-thetford@btcv.org.uk
