Is your dermatologist a dermatologist and is he/she board certified?

Individuals seeking diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer and other skin conditions should determine if their dermatologists are indeed dermatologists and board certified by the American Board of Dermatology. Not surprisingly, individuals seeking care of their skin conditions may receive care by physicians, nurse practioners, and physician assistants who may call themselves “skin specialists” and dermatologists. These physicians and others may do so without completing a formal dermatology residency. Many physicians who are board certified in fields unrelated to dermatology may be practicing dermatology. Now there are training programs being developed to permit nurse practioners to receive a doctorate of nursing and call themselves “Doctor” as would a PhD in a specialized field.

These nurse practioners (NPs) are NOT doctors of medicine as is a board-certified dermatologist. Certification by the American Board of Dermatology is the consummate title addressed to a dermatologist based on their education and experience. If you see a “skin specialist,” it is your responsibility to ask of their credentials.

Remember; a board-certified dermatologist is a medical doctor who has completed a minimum of twelve (12) years of training (four years of college, four years of medical school, and four more years in an internship and a formal dermatology residency program) to even become eligible to take the testing for board certification by the American Board of Dermatology.

Individuals seeking diagnosis and proper treatment of their skin disease can depend on board-certified dermatologists for their care.

I

’ve biked many great places, through Tuscan vineyards, past Rome’s Colosseum, down Vegas’s Red Rock Canyon, along northern Michigan’s coast, and around Manhattan’s Hudson River shoreline. And Toledo.

I’ve been biking for about 10 years, since I rode the Make-A-Wish 300-mile tour from Traverse City to the MIS Speedway. After the tour, I wanted to ride everywhere: to work, the library, the post office, Sautter ’s Grocery, and Chandler Cafe with my bride, Colleen.

Eventually, I became a bike commuter, riding from Sylvania to Toledo Hospital, Flower Hospital, ProMedica Perrysburg and Maumee, and Imaging Central. I was amazed

at the bike-friendliness of the roads.

BikeWorks owner John Drake and his “plus 5” riding group showed me many of Toledo’s great routes.

There are also great routes on mapmyride.com. This free website is great for planning new rides. Search “Tour Toledo” beginning in Sylvania by xrayhowe. The ride begins at Lourdes University, then winds through Sylvania, past Olander Park, then follows the University Parks Trail. It then heads through Wildwood, Ottawa Hills, the University of Toledo main campus, Ottawa Park, the Old West End, the Toledo Museum of Art, Fifth Third Field, the Huntington Center, and Erie Street Market.

Biking is exhilarating, economical, and green. It’s an excellent low-impact, life-long cardiovascular workout if done safely. Safety means wearing high-visibility attire and having bright head and tail lights on all the time. I like the DiNotte 300 Lumens. Drivers appreciate the heads up, spotting you a mile away, even more so at night.

Planet Bike’s Superflash Turbo is a less-expensive, reasonable alternative.

Also, wear a helmet to protect your noggin from concrete. Another must is a helmet mirror to know what’s coming.

Assume you’re invisible, especially at intersections. Drivers are texting and talking. Don’t proceed until you’re sure they see you. Never ride against traffic; it’s illegal and startles drivers. Ride to the right, and go with the flow of traffic.

Ride where and when it’s safest: low-traffic roads, low-traffic times, bike paths, bike lanes, subdivision streets, and other low-speed streets (35 mph and under). Avoid high-speed, narrow, single-lane busy roads. If I don’t like the look of things, I’ll ride on the grass or sidewalk rather than chance it.

Lastly, remember that when you bike, you represent all bikers. Ride courteously, obey traffic laws, make yourself visible, and thank drivers at every opportunity.

Toledo Trail Riders to add two new board members in May

T

he Toledo Trail Riders, a local non-profit All-Purpose Vehicle (APV) Club, has voted to add two additional board members to their already seven-person board of directors council. Scott Dubuc and Jim Miller, both natives of Northwest Ohio, will start their two-year terms beginning June 1. Both Scott and Jim will hold “at large” positions on the board.

Scott and Jim are dynamic additions to the leadership of our club, and both are highly respected in the local APV community. HEAD AND NECK CANCER Signs, risks, treatment, and prevention

M

any forms of cancer present a classic “Catch 22.” That is, they respond best to treatment and are most curable in the earliest stages, but the symptoms they cause early on (if any) tend to be so subtle that affected individuals often don’t seek medical treatment until the disease becomes more advanced. Such is often the case with head and neck cancer.

Not to be confused with cancers arising in the brain, the cancers collectively known as “head and neck cancer” develop in the mucosal linings of different structures in the head and neck region, such as the lips, tongue, salivary glands, oral cavity, 1tongue, 4/21/14 throat, 11:29 AMlarynx, nasal cavity, tonsils, sinuses, and even the ears.

According to Brittany Balusik, MSN, CNP, of The Toledo Clinic Cancer Centers, approximately 90 percent of head and neck cancers begin in the squamous cells that line these moist surfaces.

What are the symptoms?

Because head and neck cancer can arise in so many different locations, the potential symptoms are highly varied. However, Balusik identifies the following as generalized symptoms to watch for: • Sores in the mouth

or on the tongue that don’t heal Pain upon swallowing Nasal obstruction Hoarseness Voice changes A thick, white patch in the mouth that bleeds easily and doesn’t heal • Blood in the saliva or phlegm • Painless swelling or lump in the neck • Decreased hearing.

“These symptoms tend to be mild and can often be attributed to other common ailments, so diagnosing head and neck cancer early, when the prognosis for cure is best, can be difficult. In fact, up to 50 percent of patients with this type of cancer present with advanced disease. That’s one of the reasons regular follow-up with your primary care physician and dentist is so important. They’re often the first to catch this disease,” Balusik explains.

When head and neck cancer is suspected, further testing is performed to confirm the diagnosis.

work; imaging studies, such as MRI; endoscopic exams; and biopsies among other tests.

Who’s at risk?

Accounting for three to five percent of all cancers in the US, head and neck cancer is nearly twice as common in men than in women and is much more prevalent in people over age 50 than among the younger population.

There are also multiple potential causes of the disease, the most common being alcohol consumption and tobacco use, which includes “smokeless” (chewing) tobacco.

“Another major one is exposure to human papilloma virus, or HPV, specifically HPV-16. Cases linked to HPV, which most commonly affect the tongue or tonsils, have been on the rise recently, even more so than those linked to alcohol and tobacco use combined,” Balusik notes.

Other risk factors include genetics (people of Asian ancestry tend to be at higher risk), poor dental or oral hygiene, exposure to the Epstein-Barr virus, radiation exposure, and exposure to asbestos or certain synthetic fibers that can be inhaled through the nasal cavity. Among the occupations known to increase risk are construction, logging, and textile manufacturing.

How is head and neck cancer treated?

Treatment of head and neck cancer may include radiation, surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapies, or any combination of these options. “Also, because head and neck cancer can affect so many different body systems,

treatment usually includes various forms of supportive care as well, such as nutritional support, speech and swallowing therapy, and sometimes even plastic surgery,” says Balusik.

Can head and neck cancer be prevented?

In Another Garden tour to be held June 21

Study finds renal artery stent procedure leads to similar outcome when compared to medication-only therapy NIH-funded research finds patients with high blood pressure and narrowed renal artery do not benefit from stenting procedure A commonly used stenting procedure to treat plaque build-up in the renal artery appears to offer no significant improvement when added to medication-based therapy, according to results from a new National Institutes of Health-funded study. The narrowing and hardening of one or both renal arteries, known as renal artery stenosis, occurs in 1 to 5 percent of people who have hypertension, or high blood pressure.

The findings were presented at the American Heart Association (AHA) 2013 Scientific Sessions in Dallas, Texas on November 18, 2013 and appeared concurrently in the New England Journal of Medicine. Renal artery stenosis can lead to conditions including chronic kidney disease, coronary artery disease, and stroke.

Effective treatment of this condition can improve blood pressure control, stabilize kidney function, and reduce incidence of serious cardiovascular events.

“Demonstrating the ineffectiveness of certain medical procedures can be as valuable as proving the effectiveness of treatment techniques,” said Dr. Michael Lauer, director of the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences in the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, which supported the study.

“The findings from this study could help change clinical practice by encouraging health care providers to avoid unnecessary stenting procedures when treating renal artery stenosis.”

According to the study’s researchers, between 1996 and 2000 there was a 364 percent jump in renal artery stenting procedures for Medicare beneficiaries. The procedure involves inserting a metal mesh tube into an artery to open the clogged passageway. An estimated 78 million Americans have hypertension, according to the AHA, and as many as 3.9 million people in the United States may have renal artery stenosis.

“Renal artery stenting for this condition

remains a common practice because while several, smaller studies showed negative results, other research has suggested the procedure may help lower blood pressure and stabilize kidney function,” said Dr. Christopher Cooper, lead author of the study and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the University of Toledo Medical Center.

“Our larger study demonstrates that this procedure offers no incremental benefit when added to treatment with medication.”

The Cardiovascular Outcomes in Renal Atherosclerotic Lesions study, known as CORAL, studied 947 patients whose plaque build-up in the renal artery narrowed the blood vessel by 60 percent or more. Participants, whose average age was 69, also had either systolic blood pressure of 150 mmHg or higher while taking two or more drugs or Stage 3 chronic kidney disease. Researchers from more than 100 institutions randomly split participants into one group that received medical therapy and another group that received a stent plus medical therapy.

The research team examined the effect of the two treatment options on a combination of cardiovascular and renal outcomes that included death from renal or cardiovascular causes; heart attack; hospitalization for congestive heart failure; progressive renal insufficiency; or renal replacement therapy.

During an average follow-up period of 43 months, researchers found that 35.1 percent of patients who received medical therapy and stents experienced one of the negative endpoints versus 35.8 percent of patients who received medication alone.

ave you ever thought what goes into manufacturing a hearing aid? It’s time we dig deeper into this topic, especially with the wide variety of prices floating around in national media ads.

Maybe you or your loved one has recently been diagnosed with hearing loss and the audiologist recommended a few hearing aid options. A first-time patient may be shocked or surprised by the price, and that’s certainly understandable.

We get a lot of questions regarding the price of hearing aids, and we’re happy to break it all down.

One needs to consider quite a few things when breaking down what’s required to manufacture a hearing aid.

A hearing aid manufacturer must first have basic resources, such as factory space, machinery, and equipment. We then need to consider the research and development that went into the technology and testing of the hearing aids as well as the assembly,

marketing, and distribution. There are also hidden legal costs that are necessary, such as the municipal, state, and federal legal fees that come with manufacturing and distributing medical devices.

Some hearing aids are considered medical devices and need to comply with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before they can be marketed to professionals and the public. This process may take several years to complete, and meanwhile, the researchers and developers of hearing aids are continually trying to improve their products through the development of even newer technology. A great deal of research and development is performed to achieve advances such as feedback management, digital noise reduction, frequency lowering, and wireless streaming. These are just the costs related to producing the hearing aid, the highest cost going back to the first few steps—the development of the technology.

Not all hearing aids are alike,

which is important to consider when it’s time for you to treat your hearing loss. Internet and direct-toconsumer hearing aids are definitely not on the same level playing field.

Also, hearing aids are not consumer electronic devices; each hearing aid is individually selected after a full diagnostic assessment is performed and the patient is counseled.

The counseling includes a hearing aid evaluation, demonstration of different technology levels, and determination of which hearing aid style fits the lifestyle of the individual.

Custom hearing aids require ear mold impressions, which only a licensed and certified audiologist has the necessary skills and expertise to perform.

It’s a challenge she loves.

Malone says now that becoming a nurse was “a foregone conclusion at the time. Once graduating from high school, girls went into teaching or nursing. I had no college counseling that I can recall. My grandma and my mother were nurses, and my dad was a pharmacist. I had always enjoyed sciences, so there I was.”

There was Bowling Green State University, where she earned a BS in Nursing, just the beginning of training and education that has taken her from one who had nursing thrust upon her to an active member of the school nursing community. She brings experience as a medical/surgical nurse, a clinic nurse specialist in rheumatology and arthritis, a visiting nurse providing home care, a trauma-unit nurse, an HIV/AIDS nurse, and a nursing school instructor to the two jobs that currently keep her busy— school nurse at St. Francis de Sales High School and a Court Appointed

Special Advocate (CASA). She has also earned a Master’s degree in Nursing (emphasis on Community Health), certification in School Nursing, and national School Nurse Certification, all of which have made her a valuable member of healthcare teams.

To the casual observer, the job of a school nurse might seem routine—pass out cough drops, minister to headaches or PE injuries, dispense prescription meds, and, maybe, arrange vision or hearing screenings once a year.

Malone explains that nothing could be further from the truth.

“The public health model approach of school nurses, going back to the early 1900’s, was to decrease the spread of communicable disease, increase hygiene, and decrease truancy by intervening with families. The emphasis was on the treatment of acute illness.

Now, the school nurse must address the physical, mental, and emotional health of the students. Our goal is to support the learning process. We want the students in the best shape to be able to take advantage of all the school has to offer.”

She continues, “But today’s students are dealing with unemployment, lack of funds for clothing or supplies or food or medical care. If a student comes to school hungry or worried about where he will sleep at night, it is difficult to concentrate on academic work. That makes his worries our concerns. School nurses all over our community are finding the same situations in their schools, so we all have to work under a new model.”

At St. Francis, Malone has organized a Food for Thought program that provides food and lunch cards to needy kids. Students can take advantage of her stash of fresh fruit, juice, and peanut butter sandwiches if they have nothing to bring from home or don’t have the funds to buy the school lunch. Her colleagues report that she has raised funds for gift cards at local grocery stores at holiday times, helping her students and their families to have food in their homes.

arker is a strong-spirited, joyful, blonde-haired, blue-eyed fiveyear-old. He has some behavioral issues and is considered to be slightly immature for his age, especially in various social interactions. Parker’s birthday is in November. According to the public school, Parker was not ready for kindergarten but could benefit from a young five’s program.

His mother was already aware of the needed placement in the young five’s program before attending kindergarten round up. She knew that he needed some extra attention in social situations and knew that Parker, academically, could not or would not complete half of what her daughters did at the same age.

Parker is my son. My name is Hollie Miller. I am a mother of four beautiful children, three daughters and a son. I am a graduate student at the University of Toledo, graduating from the Patient and Child Advocacy Certification programs. I am pursuing a Doctorate in Occupational Therapy. My undergraduate studies were completed at Eastern Michigan University in Elementary Education with an endorsement in early childhood education from Baker College of Jackson, Michigan.

The Young Five’s program is a mixture between a preschool program and kindergarten program. While I still feel this was the best placement for Parker, it has not come without obstacles and hoops to jump through.

The beginning of the year brought about many phone calls and teacher/ parent meetings to discuss various behavioral circumstances that needed attention and guidance to teach Parker the correct, age-appropriate behavior to use in the situations encountered.

At one point, I was told to discuss Parker ’s actions with his pediatrician. I was unsettled in doing so and worried what I would be told. My gut instinct was correct; Parker was

recommended for testing for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and ultimately to be placed on prescription medications to help “curve” the behavior. Through my experiences. I knew this is not an avenue I wanted to navigate for my child. I did not want a “label” placed upon him or for him to be medicated daily.

Upon advanced research, I found no scientific data to support the conclusion of this diagnosis for Parker due to his young age, even though this is a choice that could have been integrated into his life. I chose the road less traveled and decided against testing and medication. While we still have obstacles to conquer, we are well on our way!

I am Parker ’s advocate. An advocate is a person who publicly or personally supports or recommends a particular cause or policy. Through my studies at the University of Toledo, I have had the opportunity to gain the knowledge necessary to meet the needs and legal rights of children and their families. I am able to recognize and react to situations involving child abuse and neglect, legal issues, and various medical concerns. I am able to advocate for the best interests of children in our communities. The University of Toledo has exceptional faculty to guide the studies in child advocacy.

Advocacy is needed on a regular basis for children and their families who do not know where to look for help and support. I have taken the challenge to be an advocate for children. I will change the way future generations are looked upon and the resources available to them.

The certification in Child Advocacy from the University of Toledo allows me to meet the goals of those I will be serving today and in my future endeavors, changing the lives of one child at a time. ❦

Left untreated, heart valve disease leads to inexorable heart damage and ultimately death from heart failure.

VHD primarily affects the inflow and outflow valves, known as the mitral and aortic valves respectively, both of which are located in the left

Aortic stenosis (AS) AS is the most common valve disease in patients over 60 years of age, affecting more than 1.5 million people in the US. One in eight people over age 75 suffer from AS, and over 500,000 suffer from severe AS. The aortic valve separates the heart from the aorta, which distributes blood throughout the body. Aortic stenosis occurs when the valve is narrowed by calcium deposition, leading to the obstruction of blood flow from the heart to the aorta. As a result of the narrowing, the heart must generate very high pressures with each beat to overcome the restriction of blood flow. The persistent high pressure within the heart leads to heart fatigue and, ultimately, failure and death.

What are the symptoms of AS? Symptoms of AS are reduced exercise tolerance, shortness of breath, fatigue or lack of energy, angina, palpitations, and fainting.

Many of the symptoms are ignored by patients who attribute them to aging, since the disease occurs with increasing frequency with age. The development of symptoms suggests heart damage and an increased risk of death. Without treatment, 50% of patients will die two to five years after the onset of symptoms.

How is AS diagnosed?

AS is easily diagnosed based upon symptoms, including a characteristic murmur found with a stethoscope on physical examination. An echocardiogram is then obtained to determine the severity of the stenosis and heart muscle strength.

Despite the diagnosis of AS, 50% of patients are either not referred to a surgeon or refuse to consider replacement.

How is AS treated?

The treatment of severe AS is valve replacement. The choice of replace-

ment valve, of which there are many, is determined by several parameters, including patient compliance, age, and other associated medical conditions.

According to the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the mortality rate for aortic valve replacement is less than 3.3%. Surprisingly, many referring physicians are unaware of actual outcomes of surgeons to whom they refer within the community and most patients simply do not inquire about outcome data.

We covered commitment to exercise, but what about our commitment to healthier eating choices? One area that is a struggle for many people is impulse eating. Our schedules are

such that we are constantly on the go. We realize that we need to eat, but we aren’t at home and won’t be for a while. So what do we do?

We find the most convenient place to go, which is usually a fast-food establishment. Again, we are in a hurry and have to get to our next destination. We don’t have much time. We order something that is easy to eat in the car and, in most cases, has poor nutritional value. We might supersize the order. Not only are we doing this for our meal, but we are also doing it for our kids’ meals.

Just like that, we have put food into ourselves that has some negative health aspect: high in sugar, low in nutritional value, which typically will reduce our energy and increase our weight. It is a situation we all have been in, and when hunger strikes, it strikes.

How do you share the chores when you are traveling?

T

hat’s what a reader from Whitehouse asked. She had read in this column that Shirley and I spend about six months a year on the road.

Because she has been married for more than 15 minutes, she knows there are some things men do naturally and some that women do naturally. But she claims the things that men do naturally (i.e., without being reminded 47 times) tend to have little redeeming social value.

Such as updating stats on the Tigers at the All-Star break. Whereas women naturally do all kinds of things that men would never consider. Such as childbirth. And removing the boxers from the bathroom doorknob.

So she wanted to know how Shirley and I divvy up responsibilities on the road compared to at home. We had an extended discussion, during which she took exception to several things for reasons I don’t quite understand.

For example, she refused to acknowledge that some jobs are just basically “manly” and others are “girly.” Shirley would be the first to insist that she is not a “girly girl.” She likes Columbia fishing shirts because she actually likes to fish, not because she is making a fashion statement.

unning gives you a great workout that challenges both your body and your mind. When you cross the finish line in a race, your body is exhausted but your work is not over. After you exercise, you need to restore your body’s balance and power. Adhering to these post-race recovery tips will give you the edge for a more rapid recovery.

First, water is the most essential ingredient you put into your body.

Water helps in your recovery by cleansing wastes from your system.

It helps dissolve nutrients and carries them to all parts of your body.

Always stay hydrated, and drink water even if you don’t feel thirsty yet. As runners, we should drink up to three quarts of water a day. After a run, you should drink about 16 ounces of fluids and more if you run longer. Staying hydrated after the event will aid in a faster recovery.

When you exercise, your body burns carbohydrates for energy and breaks down your muscle tissue.

Complex carbohydrates are key to any athlete’s diet because they provide a steady, nutrient-rich energy supply. Immediately after your race, your body utilizes glucose in order

to rebuild and recover from your intense effort. Fruits, energy bars, and pretzels are quick, easy snacks that help initiate your replenishing process.

Runners also need to replenish their electrolytes. Electrolytes affect fluid balance in the body and are necessary for proper functioning of your nerves and muscles. When you exercise, you lose electrolytes through perspiration. One way to renew your electrolytes is by drinking a sports beverage. These drinks help restore your body by preventing dehydration.

Repair and restore your body with proteins. Proteins are essential in the repair of your muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Muscle proteins power you through your race. After a strenuous race, new muscle proteins must replace damaged ones. Good sources of protein are meats, fish, eggs, and dairy products.

Fruits and vegetables are filled with vitamins, minerals, and fibers essential to a runner. Bananas, a good source of potassium, are believed to decrease cramping.

Laurels of Toledo puts new spin on rehab with Wii

he expert therapy team at The Laurels of Toledo, a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center located at 1011 Byrne Road, has always taken pride in finding innovative, personalized ways to help rehab guests achieve their unique goals and integrate back into the community with as much strength, mobility, and function as possible. For guests recovering from surgery or a debilitating injury, this process is often a challenging journey that takes all the motivation they can muster. But then, some aspects of rehab at The Laurels are just plain fun.

Take, for example, the facility’s new Wii-Hab program, an outside-the-box approach to rehab that utilizes the Wii Bowling program. According to Julie Leidel, Rehab Services Director for The Laurels, “Wii-Hab is multisensory, having visual, auditory, and tactile elements that you don’t always get with traditional rehab. Plus, it’s a lot of fun!”

Leidel further explains that Wii-Hab is part of The Laurels’ community reentry program, which helps prepare guests for the real-world situations and environments they’ll encounter when they return to their normal dayto-day activities. So, they’re reaching out to senior centers, senior apartment complexes, and assisted-living facilities throughout our community to invite them to participate in Wii-Hab bowling tournaments. Each facility takes a turn hosting the tournament and has its own team of players.

Levesque recalls that when he first started Wii-Hab, he had to play sitting in a chair. However, he soon

discovered that virtual bowling made it easier to overcome the challenge of standing up. Essentially, it served as a pleasant distraction. “Once I got on my feet, bowling encouraged me to forget I was even standing because I was focused more on playing and improving my game than on my knee and the fact that I was putting weight on it,” he says.

Just prior to this writing, The Laurels took their turn hosting the Wii Bowling tournament, and this time Michaelmas Manor was the visiting team. Once again, Michaelmas prevailed, but a great time was had by all the participants whether they won or lost. “We’re not just playing to win or for the physical benefits. It’s also about getting out there and interacting with other facilities in the community and establishing a rapport,” Leidel says. ❦ The Laurels of Toledo accepts Medicare, Medicaid, and all private commercial insurances. Beware the powered lawnmower

We at the Academy of Medicine feel it is of paramount importance that members of our community stay informed of the dangers of the powered lawnmower and pass this information to their friends, family, and children.

s the memories of a relatively harsh winter fade, we look forward to springtime and outside activities. One of those activities is lawn care, for which we commonly use a powered lawnmower. However, too often we fail to recognize that “rotary power mowers are probably the most dangerous of common household tools” (Paul Ross, MD, JAMA, 1976).

The powered lawnmower is so commonplace in the suburban home that

we must assume “familiarity breeds contempt” because a recent survey reported that annually almost 80,000 Americans require hospital treatment for injuries sustained while using powered lawnmowers. Of added

significance is the fact that the incidence of these injuries is increasing. Most of these injuries occur in children younger than 19 and in adults over the age of 60 years.

To understand the potential for exposure to a powered lawnmower we only have to realize that, in 2008, it is estimated that approximately 6,800,000 walk-behind and approx-

imately 2,150,000 ride-on powered mowers were sold in the United States. Many of these mowers are highly sophisticated machines that require skill and caution to use safely.

Since the safety and protection of our children is an adult responsibility, we must have an understanding of these machines and how they should be used safely to minimize the risk of injury to our children and to innocent bystanders. Although many of these injuries are relatively minor burns, cuts, bruises, and abrasions, a very significant number of these injuries are devastating amputations and are even fatal. A recent report

from the Consumer Product Safety Commission of the U.S. Government (CPSC) indicates that: • Ride-on powered lawnmowers account for about 150 deaths per year in the US.

• 23% of these deaths are in children younger than 15 years of age.

• 14% of injuries from powered lawnmowers occur in children younger than 15 years of age.

• The risk of death in children younger than 5 years of age is about 11 times higher than that of the operator of the powered mower.

In addition to fatal injuries, the powered lawnmower is the most common cause of amputation in the pediatric population. We are approaching the prime time for these injuries; therefore, now is the time to focus on what we can do to minimize the chance that we, one of our loved ones, or one of our friends/ neighbors will experience an injury from a powered lawnmower.

Although traumatic amputations are devastating injuries, it is also important to appreciate the capacity of these machines to inflict injury by discharging a projectile. Considering the weight and the average speed of the rotary blade (3,000 RPM) the kinetic energy generated is approximately 2,100 foot-pounds. This is comparable to dropping a 211-pound object from a height of 100 feet and

It behooves us to remove even small objects from the lawn before using a powered mower and to be certain that no one is standing near the discharge end of the mower.

American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has published strict guidelines that should be followed for the use of powered lawnmowers: 1) Children should not be allowed to play adjacent to lawnmowers when used. In fact, children should be inside the house and under the supervision of a responsible adult when the lawn is being mowed with a powered lawnmower. (There are a number of cases reported where a child was inside when the parent began to mow the lawn then ran outside for some reason, slipped and slid under the lawnmower, and sustained an injury.)

2) Children should not ride as passengers or be towed behind in carts or trailers. (Again, familiarity breeds contempt. When children play or ride on a powered mower with an adult, it becomes “a thing to do” without understanding the very significant risks involved.)

3) Children should not operate lawnmowers until they are adequately mature (judgment, strength, coordination)—age 12 for a walk-behind and age 16 for a riding mower.

In a recent survey done by the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America reporting on 144 cases of pediatric trauma from powered lawnmowers, 85 percent would have

been prevented if AAP and US Consumer Product Safety Commission guidelines had been followed!

Current CPSC recommendations If you are shopping for a walk-behind rotary lawnmower, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends that you consider the following factors that may affect mowing operations: Who will be using the machine most of the time? Will they tire quickly if they have to push the mower all the while or would a better choice be a self-propelled mower?

Does the mower have deflectors at the discharge chute that force objects thrown from it to be ejected toward the ground rather than upward in the air?

Does the mower start easily?

Ignition systems have been improved to simplify manual starting of the mower.

Is it easy to operate? Are controls within easy reach? Is the handle adjustable so others can use the mower without difficulty?

Do you want to vary the cutting height of the grass during the growing season? Manufacturers use several methods to adjust the cutting height, including wheel levers and bolted wheels. Consider the ease with which you can adjust the cutting height when shopping for a mower.

Consider your preferences for lawn care. If you don’t bag grass clippings, then you will likely find the “engine kill” mower acceptable.

With this machine, the engine will shut down and the rotary blade will stop within three seconds after you release your grip on the operator controls. With the “engine kill” mower, the pull-rope starter must be located within 24 inches of the top handle,

If you use a grass catcher to bag lawn clippings, then a mower that features a blade brake clutch should be considered. With this mower, the rotary blade stops within three seconds after you release the operator control bar but the engine continues to operate. This allows you to empty the grass catcher frequently (the blade being stopped) without having to turn off the engine. When the catcher is replaced, you simply engage the operator control to resume cutting grass.

Fill the fuel tank before starting the engine to cut the lawn. Never refuel the mower when it is running or while the engine is hot.

Check the lawn for debris (twigs, rocks, and other objects) before mowing the lawn. Objects have been struck by the mower blade and thrown out from under the mower, resulting in severe injuries and deaths.

Don’t cut the grass when it’s wet.

Wet clippings will probably clog the discharge chute and, ultimately, could jam the rotary blade and shut down the engine. When you need to remove clippings from the chute, the rotary blade must be stopped.

Wear sturdy shoes with sure-grip soles when using the mower, never sneakers, sandals, or with bare feet.

Slacks rather than shorts offer better protection for the legs. Never allow young children to operate a power lawnmower.

Children should not be allowed on or near the lawn when the rotary mower is in use. Push the mower forward, never pull it backward.

If the lawn slopes, mow across the slope with the walk-behind rotary mower, never up and down. (With a riding mower, drive up and down

the slope, not across it.)

Don’t remove any safety devices on the mower. Remember that the safety features were installed to help protect you against injury. Check safety features often and repair or replace if needed.

With an electric mower, organize your work so you first cut the area nearest the electrical outlet, then gradually move away. This will minimize chances of your running over the power cord and being electrocuted.

Read the owner ’s manual to become familiar with the workings of the machine.

Keep the manual in a safe place so it will be handy when you need it the next time. Check the manual for hints on performing routine maintenance, checking engine oil levels and fluid in powered wheel drives, and performing maintenance when the mower is stored during the off-season.

Older walk-behind rotary mowers If you cut grass with a pre-standard rotary mower, use extreme caution.

Remember that the machine does not have the safety features of the new equipment, and that the problems that prompted federal standards in the first place will still be found on your machine.

If clippings jam the discharge chute, first shut off the engine. The blade must come to a complete stop before you attempt to clear the jam.

If you try to clear the chute while the blade rotates, your fingers could be amputated.

Push the mower forward, never pull it backward.

If you want to adjust the cutting height on any machine, do so before starting the engine. The blade should always be stationary.

Shut down the engine if you leave the operator position for any reason.

If you wish to disable the mower so no one can use it, simply remove the ignition wire from the spark plug or remove the spark plug.

death. Operation on all slopes requires extra caution. If you cannot back up the slope or if you feel uneasy on it, do not mow on it. Also: • Mow up and down slopes, not across.

• Watch for holes, ruts, bumps, rocks, or other hidden objects.

Uneven terrain could overturn the machine. Tall grass can hide obstacles.

• Choose a low ground speed so you will not have to stop or shift while on a slope.

• Do not mow on wet grass. Tires may lose traction.

• Always keep the machine in gear when going down slopes.

Do not shift to neutral and coast downhill.

• Avoid starting, stopping, or turning on a slope. If the tires lose traction, disengage the blade(s) and proceed slowly straight down the slope.

• Keep all movement on slopes slow and gradual. Do not make sudden changes in speed or direction, which could cause the machine to roll over.

• Use extra care while operating the machine with grass catchers or other attachments; they can affect the stability of the machine. Do not use on steep slopes.

• Do not try to stabilize the machine by putting your foot on the ground.

• Do not mow near drop-offs, ditches, or embankments. The machine could suddenly roll over if a wheel goes over the edge or if the edge caves in.

Children and lawnmowers Tragic accidents can occur if the operator is not alert to the presence of children. Children are often attracted to the machine and the mowing activity. Never assume that children will remain where you last saw them.

• Keep small children out of the mowing area and in the watchful care of a responsible adult other than the operator.

• Be alert and turn the machine off if a child enters the area.

• Before and while backing, look behind and down for small children.

• Never carry children, even with the blade(s) shut off. They may fall off and be seriously injured or interfere with safe mower

operation. Children who have been given rides in the past may suddenly appear in the mowing area for another ride and be run over or backed over by the machine.

• Never allow children to operate the machine.

• Use extreme care when approaching blind corners, shrubs and trees, or other objects that may block your view of a child.

he rehabilitation teams at The Manor at Perrysburg, Bowling Green Manor, and The Bowling Green Care Center (all HCF Management facilities) understand that no two stroke cases are identical. Depending on factors such as the part of the brain affected and the amount of time that elapses before medical care is sought, the physical and cognitive impact of stroke can be very different from one patient to the next. “Stroke can involve so many different areas of deficit, so the approach to recovery must be very patient-specific,” says speechlanguage pathologist Erica Sage, Director of Rehabilitation at The Manor at Perrysburg. “We take this same individualized approach to every patient’s care plan—whether it’s for stroke, a hip fracture, or any other problem.”

“Depending on where in the brain the stroke occurs, victims may lose the muscle control necessary for speech or they may have the muscular ability to talk but can’t produce intelligible language. Of course, many of the same muscles involved in speech are used for swallowing, so that reflex can become damaged during a stroke

as well. We have the expertise to address all of these deficits.”

Patients are usually referred to area HCF care communities through hospital social workers or family members looking for a skilled care facility for their loved one. The facility also offers tours every day of the week for those who would like to see what they offer and how they operate. The facility then works closely with the hospital—including sending a staff member for an in-person visit— to determine the patient’s unique needs so everything can be in place when he or she arrives at the facility.

Mechanical embolectomy can prevent life-altering impacts of stroke in certain patients

intravenous thrombolytic medication tPA, or tissue plasminogen activator, is often the first line of defense and can be very effective at dissolving the clot and restoring blood flow to the brain. However, to be safe and effective, tPA must be administered within three hours of the onset of stroke symptoms—a relatively brief window of opportunity. Now, thanks to the advent of newer-generation mechanical embolectomy technology, stroke patients who fit specific criteria have another alternative.

“Typically, stroke patients exhibit different degrees of neurological deficit. Mechanical embolectomy is appropriate for those with severe ischemic stroke and occlusion of one of the main vessels in the brain, specifically if they are not good candidates for tPA or have received tPA but aren’t showing improvement,” Dr. Jumaa explains.

Four different devices are cleared by the Food and Drug Administration for mechanical embolectomy. “The one we use most often is a stentshaped device, which is deployed in the vessel for five minutes. In that timeframe, the stent should capture the clot so we can take it out and restore blood flow,” says Dr. Jumaa.

Outcomes from mechanical embolectomy have been very good in patients who were not candidates for tPA. Dr. Jumaa notes that in many cases, patients exhibit improvement— moving parts of the body that they couldn’t before—immediately after the clot is removed. “It all has to do with appropriate selection of patients before significant damage has been done in the brain,” he adds.

With May being designated National Stroke Awareness Month, ProMedica urges readers to B.E. F.A.S.T. in assessing whether physical symptoms could indicate a stroke.

This acronym stands for: Balance—loss of balance or coordination or difficulty walking Eyes—vision problems Face—numbness, tingling, weakness, or drooping Arm or Leg—numbness, tingling, or weakness Speech—slurred or garbled speech Time—note exactly when the symptom started and when you last felt normal These symptoms typically develop suddenly and often affect only one side of the body. If you notice any of these symptoms in yourself or someone else, call 911 immediately.

Remember: the longer you wait to seek medical care, the more brain tissue will be permanently damaged and the fewer the treatment options available to healthcare professionals.

It’s also important to be aware that stroke and heart disease share many of the same risk factors, including obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, atherosclerosis, cigarette smoking, and others. Having atrial fibrillation, or AFib, a disorganized heart rhythm that originates in the top chambers of the heart (predominantly the left atrium), also puts people at higher risk of stroke because blood clots forming in the atrium can travel to the brain. Carotid stenosis, or narrowing of the carotid arteries due to the buildup of fatty plaques, is yet another stroke risk factor. Dr. Jumaa states that, “Within 24 hours of admitting a stroke patient, we screen the blood vessels going up to the brain and in the heart. Many times, we can prevent recurrent stroke if we diagnose and treat these conditions quickly.”

Dr. Jumaa also explains that medical intervention is often only the beginning of stroke recovery.

“Physical therapy and rehabilitation play a major role as well. If you don’t get immediate results from treatments such as tPA or embolectomy, you can still recover function over time with aggressive rehab and therapy,” he says. ❦

We concluded that it’s best to have children when you are young and have the energy to keep up with all the activity and needs they have when they are little ones.

The present trend of waiting to have children a little later in life seems like a misunderstanding of what raising a child really means today.

caring for a child is the amount of time needed to do the essential care, training, and educating of the child.

These tasks often involve about 20 years of your life and your offspring’s life. One would hope that your child is on her or his own around the age of 20.

Sister Joan asks, “What are women supposed to do with the rest of their lives?” I would also ask that question.

I know that young women today wrestle with the choice of becoming a mother while they are young or following a career they have been preparing for while getting an education or following in someone’s footsteps, running a family business perhaps. Many of my friends and acquaintances who are grandparents are enjoying this role in their lives.

Some have even become “parents” to their children’s children because of some unusual circumstances.

Just what is it that we should be doing after our children are all grown up? That will pretty much depend on what is happening in your family, what is happening to you and your state of well-being, and what other outside influences affect your life and choices. My personal hope is to continue to be a mentor and listening presence to others until

the end of my days. Others may become involved in religion, politics, environmental causes, and lifelong learning. Hopefully we will use our skills, talents, and experience to help make a better world for us all.

My final observation about Sister Joan’s words of wisdom comes from the social barriers I’ve observed in our society and many of its institutions. Even today, we see women making less money than men doing the same job. Some institutions don’t allow women to reach the highest level of employment where the game-changing decisions are made.

Indeed, we are missing out on a lot of skills, knowledge, energy, and wisdom when half of humanity is not allowed to participate fully in life.

In this month of May, let’s honor the mothers and work for the equal place of women in our society and in our world so all of humanity is given a voice that represents who we really are—women and men working for a world built on the best of what each has to offer. ❦ Sister Mary Thill is a Sylvania Franciscan Sister. But perhaps the best way to assess whether a growth warrants a doctor’s examination is to remember the mnemonic “ABCDE,” which stands for: Asymmetry: If you were to draw a line through the center of the growth, one side would look different from the other side.

Border: The margin of the growth is irregular, jagged, or scalloped.

Color: Rather than being uniform in color, the growth has different shades of black, brown, white, or even blue.

Diameter: The growth is larger than the diameter of a pencil eraser.

Evolving: The growth has changed over time. For instance, a once small, symmetrical growth has become larger and irregular.

However, as Ross explains, “Skin cancers aren’t necessarily going to glare at you and say, ‘I’m something dangerous,’ and they don’t always occur where they’re easy to spot.

You may look at your arms, legs, and face and think everything is fine, but then overlook something on your scalp, your back, the back of your neck, or the soles of your feet. That’s why it’s so important to see a dermatologist once a year for a full skin exam.”

Be smart about sun exposure While not all cases of skin cancer can be linked to UV exposure, there’s no question that it’s the most significant

contributing factor. So the best thing you can do to reduce your risk is take measures that limit your exposure to sun or protect your skin from its harmful rays when you are outdoors. Ross recommends the following: Be wary of sunburn—Keep in mind that experiencing a severe, blistering sunburn, especially as a child, leads to a higher risk of skin cancer later life.

This is particularly true for individuals who have fair skin and blonde or red hair color. Also, don’t assume you can’t burn—and therefore don’t need to protect your skin—on overcast days.

The sun’s harmful UV rays penetrate clouds and can still cause burns even when the sun isn’t shining.

Slather on the sunscreen—Before heading outdoors, liberally apply sunscreen to all exposed skin. Though there’s disagreement over what level of SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is appropriate, Ross emphasizes that there’s no need to exceed SPF 30 as long as the sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

“And be sure to reapply the sunscreen often, especially after swimming or perspiring. You can’t just put on sunscreen—or a hand lotion or face cream with SPF—first thing in the morning and assume you’re protected for the rest of the day,” she adds.

Wear protective clothing—Your outdoor attire should include sunglasses rated to block UVA and UVB rays, a wide-brimmed hat, and a long-sleeved shirt.

Know when to stay in the shade—The sun’s rays are most intense between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Give your skin a break during that period by spending it indoors, under an umbrella or awning, or in another shady location.

Skip the tanning bed—There’s no such thing as a safe suntan—whether you get it in natural sunlight or on a tanning bed. “In fact, the UV lights in tanning beds increase the risk for all forms of cancer and are estimated to increase the risk of basal cell carcinoma by nearly 70 percent,” Ross cautions.

Don’t compromise sun protection for vitamin D—Don’t let concern over vitamin D deficiency discourage you from protecting your skin with sunscreen, wearing sun-protective clothing, and minimizing sun exposure. Ross points out that we need only about 15 minutes of sun exposure for our bodies to produce enough vitamin D, and people who are worried about deficiency have

the option of using supplements.

Schedule your screening While all of these sun-protective steps are important, they should not be considered a substitute for annual skin cancer screenings performed by a dermatologist. Screening is a critical aspect of prevention because any precancerous actinic keratoses or moles that are discovered can be removed before they have a chance to evolve into something more sinister. Furthermore, if skin cancer does develop, routine screening greatly increases the odds of catching and treating it in the earliest stage when it’s most curable.

ur community’s need for individuals willing to open their homes and hearts to children in need of a safe, loving home has never been greater. The child-welfare advocates at Lucas County Children Services (LCCS) are seeing a dramatic increase in the number of children who require foster care while the number of available foster homes has been steadily declining. LCCS strongly encourages anyone who has contemplated fostering—or perhaps has never considered it before but might be a good foster candidate—to take that next step by exploring this fulfilling, life-changing opportunity.

LCCS Foster Care Supervisors Amy Galvan and Pam Gaffney point to several factors that might be contributing to the declining availability of foster homes. “One is the simple fact that many of our foster parents have adopted their foster children. In fact, last year we had a total of 105 adoptions, so many of our fosters have completed their family and aren’t necessarily planning to foster again. Of course, we’re always thrilled when our kids find their forever home.”

Gaffney adds, “We’re also seeing an epidemic of heroin use in the community. This drug is very cheap and readily available. We’re even seeing a lot of suboxone and methodone abuse. These are supposed to be step-down drugs, but the people abusing them aren’t stepping down.

As a result of this trend, a lot more babies are coming into our system.”

What’s more, children who can’t be placed through LCCS often must be placed in private network homes, which are supervised by other agencies. While they do an excellent job of caring for kids and keeping them safe, they also cost taxpayers a lot more because the outside agencies must handle all of the administration.

Therefore, making the commitment to foster a child or sibling group not only makes a positive difference in the children’s lives, but also helps

ease the burden on Lucas County taxpayers.

The agency’s greatest fostering needs are for young children, sibling groups, and teens. They always do their best to place sibling groups together in the same home and keep them in the same school district.

However, when no one can be found to take in a sibling group, sometimes the only option is to split the children up among different homes, which can be very emotionally difficult for children who have just been removed from their biological parents.

Julie Malkin, Public Information Officer for LCCS, reassures potential fosters that they’ll receive ample support from the agency. “We do provide training to all people who are interested in fostering,” she explains.

“We also offer a financial incentive to foster parents who take in two or more children. Plus, we offer the usual stipend to help cover the costs of care, free daycare for employed parents, clothing vouchers, and medical coverage.

You’ll also be assigned a caseworker who will help you through the entire process, from placement until the child leaves.”

Prospective foster parents must be at least 21 years old and can be single, married, or a same-sex couple. They also need to complete mandatory training sessions, provide references, pass a home study, and undergo a background check. Some form of income is necessary, but they do not need to be wealthy. The house or apartment can be either owned or rented but must have at least two bedrooms.

“We need all kinds of folks, from young parents to empty nesters,” says Galvan. “We also need parents with some training or experience in assisting kids with special needs. For example, if you’re a retired nurse or other healthcare worker or perhaps a teacher, we would definitely like to talk to you.”

already a parent, look back on all those milestones your child achieved and how much joy you felt at those moments. You can experience that all over again while helping to put a child on the right path in life.”

Galvan recalls one foster mother whose experience when meeting her foster child’s birth mom was quite different from what she expected.

She anticipated that she would feel anger and resentment toward this woman who had failed to provide proper care for her child, but instead, she felt honored for being given the opportunity to care for her child

while she worked to get her life in order. She was proud to be part of the process of helping build a safe home environment that the child could eventually return to.

ecently, research has revealed that the simple act of implanting an electrical stimulator near the spinal cord is enough to give paralyzed patients the ability to move. Apparently, just providing the electrical energy is enough to allow the inborn intelligence of the body to use it for healing.

While this research is leadingedge, the use of energy in healing goes back thousands of years. In ancient China, Egypt, and Persia, they used needles with a flattened pan on top. This flattened area was just large enough to put a pinch of herb on top. The herb was then lit with fire and allowed to smolder for up to an hour. The burning herb created heat, which traveled down the shaft of the acupuncture needle and provided “heat energy” to the treatment point.

“I

s it just me, or is she not very pretty?” Other comments said that she was “kinda weird looking!”

Those words were on Facebook, and the comments were about a female US athlete who won a gold medal at the 2014 Sochi Winter Games this February. I was annoyed at the words and replied that I thought she was beautiful and talented and disciplined. Why do we as a society place so much emphasis on physical appearance? I personally think that this particular athlete is lovely.

She was accomplished, persevering, and intelligent when she spoke during interviews; she had something solid to say.

I think of our popular culture, where the entertainment and social media worlds place more interest and reverence on the Kardashian families. They do not impress me with their nuptials, their children out of wedlock, their rear-end “selfies,” or their line of clothing at Sears. I would be impressed with the Kardashians if they had something of depth to say during an interview, or if they did something that changed the world—like if they were teachers or discovered a new medicine to help with arthritis pain. Or if they just were good family people.

Granted, physical appearance is important. Our self-love and image are closely tied to how we take care of ourselves. We need to keep clean, wear appropriate clothing, brush our teeth, etc. Looking good is important.

We feel good when we are all cleaned up! But if we are balding, have gray hair, are missing a limb, or walk with a cane or use a wheelchair, society might look at us as unimportant.

But that is the norm for millions of people.

There is a whole other side effect to those with disabilities or health challenges. Not only can a person lose the use of their arms and legs due to an accident or stroke, or a chronic condition, but they might not look their best. They might not look what society deems “normal.”

But that is what life is all about.

Nobody’s perfect. So why are we trying to be anything but natural?

When you have a chronic condition, you might look a little gray around the gills from pain medication or lack of sleep; you might have a head with thinning hair or no hair because of chemo treatments. If you use a walker, wheelchair, or cane, do people immediately look at you as someone who cannot do anything or cannot think? Is the physical appearance stereotype for those who are not physically perfect just another layer of disability—one that comes from having a disability and being perceived as having nothing to contribute to society?

There is nothing wrong with a bandage, a scar, or a cane. These are parts of the “stuff ” of life. It is part of being human, and some day, all of us will be a patient.

When I talk to a person who has gone through health challenges, serious operations, or the loss of work or their home, I marvel at their stamina, strength, and endurance.

They often have lived a full life with a career, family, and home, and now are dealing with some tough medical problems, all with grace and hope.

They have real beauty and integrity in looking at life with their experiences.

Spring has arrived . . .

and so has high school tennis

he snow is finally gone. The temperatures are warming up, and for thousands of high school students, that means spring sports

have arrived. For the past 20 years, it personally has meant boys’ high school tennis has arrived.

A few months ago, I discussed tennis as a team sport and shared some statistics about the number of high school tennis players (over 300,000 student-athletes participate in tennis on the high school level).

In this month’s article, I would like to share with you a snapshot of the history of high school tennis in the Toledo and the surrounding areas.

From our area, which extends from the Indiana state line to just east of Vermillion and from the Michigan state line to just south of Lima, we have had over 22 individual state champions (singles and doubles) and over 10 teams that have won the OTCA Team State Championships.

The champions have come from Scott, Devilbiss, St. Francis, St. John’s, Ottawa Hills, Maumee Valley Country Day, Findlay, Sandusky Perkins, Lexington, Sylvania, Lima Shawnee, Elida, and Bowsher to name a few.

We have also had several coaches inducted into the OTCA Coaches Hall of Fame, including Ron Huber (Lima Shawnee), Dennis Schwinnen (Elida), Jim Hayes (Findlay), John Harris (Lexington), Mike Burke (Napoleon),

Nelson Lawless (Lima Senior), and Bob O’Connell (Ottawa Hills). Does that last name sound familiar? It should; he is the father of Healthy Living News publisher Kevin O’Connell.

I share this information with you because I want to encourage you to take some time to stop out at a high school tennis match this spring. You never know when you might see history in the making. There are many great teams and players again this year. Most importantly, there

are hundreds, if not thousands, of local student-athletes participating this spring and seeing how they compete and represent their schools and families would be worth the time.

So stop out and enjoy the weather and, more important, enjoy true student-athletes competing for their schools.

: When is noise bearable, and when is it too loud? It seems like spring has finally come to stay, and I’m noticing how the noise in our environment changes from season to season. I never realized the difference between the soft, quiet snow on the ground and springtime activities.

Could you give me your thoughts on what we should expect?

A

: Finally, winter is gone, and you will notice more and more people out and about, enjoying the fresh air. With the fresh air, warmer weather, and longer days come noisier days and nights. Yes, noise is present all year round, but when it’s warmer out, people want to enjoy the opportunity to plan parties, play softball games, or even

attend auto-racing events. The noise at some of these activities exceeds the OSHA-regulated limitations for workers exposed to excessive loud noise for an eight-hour work shift.

Activities such as seeing movies, going to noisy restaurants or bars, driving a motorcycle, or using a lawnmower are also thought to be damaging to the public.

We continue to be surrounded with activities that cause acoustic trauma daily. Acoustic trauma is just what it sounds like: injury from excessive loud noise, which may even begin early in life. Loud noise is damaging to the tiny, sensitive hair cells in our inner ear.

In some cases, doing what we think is the right thing may actually be putting us at risk for hearing loss.

For example, when we are exercising to take care of our body, we need to keep in mind that the blood flow is mostly happening in our legs and arms along with our heart, leaving those tiny hair cells more vulnerable.

On top of that, we want to entertain ourselves by wearing earphones and listening to loud music while we exercise. A good rule of thumb is, if you find it hard to hear and understand someone who is speaking

So what are you to do? Ear protection is the best investment you can make to protect your hearing health. There are many types on the market, and you should be cautious and make sure you have selected the most appropriate one for your needs.

Some are designed for musicians, others for outdoor activities, flying, or sleeping. And don’t forget the road noise! Each style has different filters to block excessive ambient noise and filter speech so you are able to continue conversations with your friends and family.

You are never too young or too old to wear ear protection, and it’s

never too early or too late to start using them. Of course you are also able to choose different colors if you desire, but remember, the most im portant reason you are getting them is to avoid any type of hearing loss in the future.

reviously called manic-depression, bipolar disorder is classed as a mood disorder like major depression because it disrupts normal moods. Major depressive disorder is characterized by one extreme of moods, depression. In bipolar disorder, however, moods may swing from extreme lows of depression to extreme highs of elevated mood, or mania.

Most cases of bipolar disorder can be successfully treated with medication. But untreated, it causes great disruption in the lives of individuals and families. result in bizarre behavior, such as theatrical public demonstrations, extravagant expenditures, sudden cross-country trips, or even violent behavior. Other consequences include domestic abuse, job loss, academic failure, and divorce. More than half of those diagnosed also have alcohol or substance-abuse problems, typically resulting in increased hospitalizations and a worse prognosis.

Bipolar disorder has two major categories of diagnosis—Bipolar Disorder 1 and Bipolar Disorder 2. Both involve major depressive episodes and manic or hypomanic episodes (or mixed episodes of mania and depression). Without medication, individuals typically experience about four episodes in ten years, increasing in frequency as time progresses. However, some experience “rapid cycling,” with four or more episodes in a year, a more severe form of the disorder that is more difficult to treat.

Untreated, episodes of bipolar depression typically last six to nine months, and manic episodes last two to six weeks. About one-third of cases become chronic with slow decline in functioning and increasing frequency of episodes. A more pos-

itive outcome usually results when the manic episodes are shorter, the age of onset is later, the sufferer has few suicidal thoughts, and there are few coexisting psychiatric or medical problems.

Bipolar disorder affects about four percent of the population. The average age of onset is 20, and 90 percent who have a single manic episode go on to have future episodes. While the causes of bipolar disorder are not clear, it has a genetic influence, with close family members also more likely to have bipolar disorder or major depression. Episodes may be precipitated by life changes and other stresses, as well as changes in the sleep-wake cycle.

Adherence to medication is a particularly serious problem in the treatment of bipolar disorder. More than half of those initially diagnosed do not stay on their medication, usually because of side effects or because they miss the euphoric moods. It is often ten years before those diagnosed accept and comply with their need for long-term medication.

Without medication, bipolar disorder has a great likelihood of relapse.

anticonvulsants, and sometimes antipsychotics. Antidepressants are used sparingly because they may cause a switch from depression to manic, mixed, or rapid cycling.

Psychotherapy also plays a crucial role in treatment, teaching individuals how to control stress and cope well with problems, as well as how to stay on track with medications. Because family tensions are major risk factors in triggering episodes, involvement

of family members in the therapy process is helpful. he sun is finally here, but don’t be a part of the more than 1 million people in the US who are diagnosed with skin cancer each year. May is designated as Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month, and according to Dr. Perry Robins, President of The Skin Cancer Foundation, “about 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers and 65 percent of melanoma cases are associated with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.”

Skin cancer is largely preventable with three elements of good sun protection: sun avoidance, sunprotective clothing, and sunblock.

Dermatological studies have shown that most skin cancers are linked to overexposure to sunlight (UV radiation). As a result, good sun protection is an important way to prevent the development of both sun-related skin damage (freckles, fine wrinkles, etc.) and sun-related skin cancers.

Everybody is subject to the potential adverse effects of overexposure to the sun regardless of race or ethnicity.

Still, some types of skin might be more vulnerable than others.

Your skin type affects the degree to which you burn and the time it takes you to burn. Fair-skinned individuals tend to burn more rapidly and even more severely. They are at the highest risk for developing skin cancer. Although darker-skinned individuals are less likely to develop skin cancer, they can and do get skin cancer and should also protect their skin from overexposure to the sun.

How can I protect myself from sun damage?

The three elements to good sun protection are: 1. Sun avoidance: Protect yourself from the harmful rays of the sun by staying in the shade or limiting the amount of time you spend in the sun, especially from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. when the sunlight is the most intense.

2. Sun-protective clothing: Wearing long-sleeved shirts, pants, hats with broad brims, and sunglasses can effectively protect your skin from the sun. Some fabrics are more protective than others. Also, specialized UVprotective clothing and hats are available.

3. Sunblock: Sunscreens should be applied 30 minutes before sun exposure to allow the ingredients to fully bind to the skin. When used properly, sunscreens may be an effective method of protecting yourself from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Use a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day.

For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad-spectrum (UVA/ UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Reapplication of sunscreen is just as important as putting it on in the first place, so reapply the same amount every two hours. Sunscreens should also be reapplied immediately after swimming, toweling off, or sweating a great deal.
