At the SBH Healthplex, our mission is to provide the St. Barnabas and Bronx communities with top-notch training tools to support fitness and health goals. We’re excited to introduce three new state-of-the-art pieces of equipment: a Hack Squat machine, a pulling sled with various attachments, and the Assault Bike. These additions reinforce our commitment to affordable premium fitness experiences.
The Hack Squat enables precise lower-body strength training, while the pulling sled enhances conditioning and functional strength. The Assault Bike, favored by professional athletes, offers an effective option for interval-based conditioning.
These tools also enhance our youth programming, inspiring healthier lifestyles for local high school students who lack access to such equipment. Our goal is to secure support from grants and partners who share our vision for community improvement.
At the Healthplex, we are proud to blend community and innovation to help our members achieve their fitness goals. Stay tuned for more updates as we expand our programming in 2025 and work together to build a stronger, healthier Bronx.

Singing River Healthplex is working towards educating its members about the significance of obtaining a "Letter of Medical Necessity" (LMN) for a gym membership. This letter, issued by a medical professional, serves as documentation explaining why engaging in exercise is medically necessary to address a specific health condition. With the LMN, individuals can utilize funds from their Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to cover the expenses associated with their gym membership.
By treating the gym membership as a qualified medical expense, individuals can benefit from using pretax dollars to support their health and wellness journey.
Understanding the financial constraints that may come with accessing fitness facilities, we believe that this initiative will provide a valuable opportunity for our members to prioritize their well-being.
I started training with Deb Bruce about 18 months ago. When I began my journey, I was about 25 pounds over my “ideal” weight In the past I lost weight, but always gained it back. Once I connected with Deb, I was able to learn good eating habits and how to make sure I was effectively working on building muscle. Today I have lost 30 pounds and I have kept if off I work out 4 times a week (two of them with Deb; personal training and her circuit class) and I can now see the muscle definition from her tutelage and challenging me. Deb is not only my personal trainer, but I am lucky to call her my friend

The Wellness Center of URMC held its annual Christmas Open House/Member Appreciation in December. Christmas music played while members enjoyed light refreshments and shopped on-site vendors for that one-of-a kind, handmade gift. In addition, many members took advantage of our “10 minutes for $10” chair massages, as well as our one-day massage specials.
The average American gains between 1-5 pounds over the holiday season and keeps it. To help our members combat this, The Wellness Center offered a program called, Maintain, Don’t Gain. Members who participated in Maintain, Don’t Gain weighed-in in mid-November, again midDecember, with the final weigh-in the first week of January. All participants who maintained their current weight was entered into a drawing for a free month’s dues They could also increase their chances of winning by earning an extra entry into the contest for losing weight and another entry for visiting The Wellness Center 24 times during the challenge. All members who weighed in all three times received a Maintain, Don’t Gain t-shirt!
In September of 2024, I embarked on a journey to Nepal where I would hike to Everest Base Camp. This 15-day trek was not only physically demanding but mentally as well! The trek started in the village of Lukla and continued along the Dudh Koshi River averaging around 10km and 600m of elevation gain a day. Traveling through the Khumbu Valley I was surrounded by Himalayan giants, grazing yaks, Buddhist culture, and unparalleled beauty. By the end, I was able to see the infamous Khumbu Icefall, the peak of Mount Everest, and five other 8,000m peaks. The highest altitude I reached was 5,460m or 18,020ft. At this altitude, the human body takes in 51% of the oxygen so it was like breathing on one lung.
Although I had been strength training for some time, I used The Wellness Center to continue that and also incorporated more cardio in my workouts to prepare for this adventure. I started by running 2-3 miles before a workout, then focusing on the lower body and back to target specific muscles that one uses while hiking. I also made sure to strengthen up my core and kept maintaining my upper body muscles. The only regret I have is not doing more stair master. This was an incredible experience and I would absolutely do it again and urge anyone thinking about it to go for it! Thank you to The Wellness Center for your support in helping me climb to new heights!
