What should I know about opioids? Opioids are pain meds that you can only get through a doctor. Opioids can help ease pain for some people, like those with advanced cancer or surgical pain. But opioids can also be unsafe if taken at unsafe doses. Before taking opioids for other health issues, such as chronic pain, nonopioid choices and safety risks should be reviewed with your doctor. Some of these risks are addiction, overdose and death.
