FOREWORD I wish all our readers a very happy and prosperous 2022. The beginning of a new year is a great time to get your priorities in order and to set goals for the next 12 months. I had the pleasure of awarding degrees to 472 students from six colleges of Gulf Medical University at the 18th convocation ceremony held recently at the sprawling Thumbay grounds. I am very happy that 2591 individuals have graduated from various programs since the inception. The university remains resolute in its vision for the future as it celebrated its 23rd anniversary recently.

Dr. Thumbay Moideen

Founder President - Thumbay Group

Thumbay University Hospital staff, faculty, and the community, and Gulf Medical University came together to celebrate the UAE’s 50th National Day and Commemoration Day. Blood donation camps and tree plantation programs were held across all the Thumbay Hospitals to mark the occasion. I am very happy to note that the Thumbay Research Institute for Precision Medicine (TRIPM) at Gulf Medical University inaugurated the Zebrafish Facility for Cancer Research in association with Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences. The facility is the second Zebrafish facility in the United Arab Emirates. Zebrafish has emerged as a versatile tool for modelling many human diseases, especially cancer. The inauguration was attended by His Excellency Abdulla Bin Souqat, Executive Director of the Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences, Prof. Hossam Hamdy, Chancellor of GMU, Prof Salem Chouaib, Vice Chancellor for Research, other vice chancellors, deans, and faculty members. We had the honor of hosting many international dignitaries at Thumbay Medicity in the last few months. H.E Roberto Speranza, Minister of Health, Italy visited Thumbay Medicity Ajman. On the occasion, Thumbay Group signed two vital MOUs in the presence of the Minister for Cooperation in the fields of education, research, and healthcare. One of them was between Thumbay University Hospital and Gruppo San Donato, Italy’s number one hospital group, while the Gulf Medical University collaborated with Italy’s top ranking San Raffaele Uni-

versity for health professions education and research. Former Chief Minister of the state of Karnataka, India Mr. B.S. Yediyurappa visited Thumbay Medicity at my personal invitation. He was given a guided tour of the entire Thumbay Medicity, Thumbay University Hospital, and was apprised of the various development initiatives undertaken by the Group. He was highly impressed by the state-ofthe-art facilities and the service to offer. Thumbay Medicity was honored by the visit of Dr. C. N. Ashwath Narayan, Hon’ble Minister of Higher Education, Information Technology & Biotechnology, Science and Technology of Karnataka, India. This visit has opened several doors for Thumbay Group and GMU to strengthen the relationship with Karnataka, India in areas of higher education, healthcare, and research. Thumbay Food Court expanded its facilities by adding Hello Panda, a Chinese cuisine restaurant. The opening of Hello Panda has enabled the expansion of The Terrace restaurant chain offering a diverse range of food and beverages to consumers in the United Arab Emirates. Hello Panda (HP) presents a culinary journey from the streets of China, Korea, and Hong Kong to the markets of Southeast Asian countries and Japan. Body & Soul Health Club & Spa has partnered with Padel Loco and Padel Factory to create a unique sporting venue making Thumbay Medicity a leading integrated health, fitness, and recreation facility. With swimming pools, aqua aerobics, gyms, badminton, table tennis, squash, tennis, basketball, and volleyball courts; and now with Padel, the Body & Soul Health Club & Spa has become the complete family health club with unmatched facilities and services. The resurgence of the new variant Omicron is again playing a spoiler in many of our activities. Until we all get rid of this menace, I urge all of you to take good care of yourselves, stay safe, stay healthy, and I look forward to a pandemic-free world in the coming months, Insha’Allah. Until my next interaction with you, I wish you all once again, a HAPPY NEW YEAR.

EATING AN ANTI-CANCEROUS

DIET A healthy lifestyle can reduce the risks of certain cancers and research indicates that many types of cancers are linked to unhealthy eating patterns and a sedentary lifestyle. Here to explain more, Dietician Fahmida Jafri reveals how to incorporate a diet that may just help reduce your risk of cancer. Jan/Feb 2022

8

What it means To eat healthy and to avoid the risk of cancer, Jafri recommends that an individual should maintain a healthy weight within normal BMI range. “There should be more whole grains, fresh vegetables and fruits included in the diet as well as a reduction in sugary, processed foods,” she says, as well as the inclusion of plant proteins, healthy fats, and fiber rich foods in the daily diet. Not limited to what we consume, she urges regular physical activity. “Keep yourself active; get involved in outdoor sports, walking, jogging or swimming at least three times a week, minimum one hour

per session,” Jafri explains. “Also, the best lifestyle includes a good sleep cycle, no dependencies, less stress, and good rest.”

Specific foods According to Jafri, non-starchy vegetables, whole fruits and whole grains are linked with a lower cancer risk. She elaborates, “It is believed that the pigments in vegetables and fruits are the most protective against cancer. So enjoy a variety of these foods as they are often rich sources of a variety of nutrients.” Fill half your plate with vegetables and fruits, and make at least half of your grains whole grains. Focus on the colorful fruits and vegetables such as eggplant, broccoli, kale, squash, oranges, kiwi, and so on, she says, to gain maximum benefits from their anti-carcinogenic properties. “Many fruits and vegetables have cancer-fighting potential; for example, lycopene, a phytochemical found in cooked tomatoes and tomato products, has been shown to slow the growth of breast, lung, and endometrial tumors and to reduce prostate, stomach, and pancreatic cancer risks.”

The protein debate Protein is the nutrient of importance for immunity and sustained health, she tells. “However, people recognize animal based protein with

less importance given to plant proteins; both types have their own advantages.” To avoid inflammation and risk of cancers, it is strongly recommended to include plant proteins as 50 percent of your total protein intake. Research indicates a link between the consumption of red meat and processed meat to colon and other cancers, she says, so it is wise to choose lean meat over processed meats, reduce the portion size/frequency and importantly, include plantbased protein in the form of kidney beans, lentils, chickpeas, tofu, tempeh, and so on.

Good fats The American Cancer Society says high saturated-fat diets are associated with an increased risk of colon, rectal, prostate, and endometrial cancers. They also state that the consumption of red meat has been linked to colon and prostate cancers. And gram for gram, fat has more than twice the calories of carbohydrates and protein, meaning excessive amounts is likely to cause weight gain. Instead, Jafri urges to consume fish two to three times a week in order to replace the high in saturated fat meat products. “Choose oils rich in MUFA, low-fat dairy and products free of trans-fats to avoid inflammation,” she notes, and include ground flaxseeds which contain soluble fiber, alpha linolenic acid (a form of healthy omega-3 fatty acid), and are the richest source of lignans (phytoestrogens that function like antioxidants).

Anti-cancerous diet checklist • Strive to eat 10 servings (about half cup is a serving) of fruits and vegetables a day, choosing carotene-rich produce like carrots and cantaloupe, dark green vegetables, cruciferous vegetables, tomatoes, and citrus when possible. • Broccoli, kale and Brussels sprouts contain sulphorane which a powerful antioxidant. • Foods such as broccoli, berries, and garlic showed some of the strongest links to cancer prevention. • Strawberries and raspberries are rich in antioxidants such as vitamin C and ellagic acid, a phytochemical. • Spinach is rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, carotenoids that remove unstable molecules called free radicals from your body before they damage it. They’re found in spinach and other dark green leafy vegetables, and some studies show they could protect against cancer of the mouth, esophagus, and stomach. H

STRESS A CLOSER

AND YOUR LOOK AT PEPTIC DIGESTION: ULCERS

From work challenges to a stuck relationship, when stress and anxiety hit an all-time high and are not addressed in time the right way, it can trickle down into our digestive system, resulting in an ulcer. The good news is that it can be easily treated with medication and lifestyle modification. As HEALTH investigates.

Jan/Feb 2022

10

WHAT IT IS

According to Dr. Thomas James, Gastroenterologist, a peptic ulcer is erosion in the mucosa lining due to an increase in stomach acid. Basically, the lining of your stomach and first part of your small intestine, known as duodenum, have a layer of mucus that protects them from the acid which is produced by your stomach to help you digest food.

DIFFERENT TYPES

There are two different categories of peptic ulcers, he explains, one is duodenal and the other is gastric classified according to its location in the body. “The duodenal ulcer is found in the first part of the small intestine of the stomach and a gastric ulcer is located in the mucous membrane of the stomach.” While duodenal ulcer is more common, both are triggered by food, stress, and lifestyle.

SYMPTOMS

The most common symptom, says Dr. James, is an aching of pain in the upper abdomen, a feeling of indigestion, hunger like pain, and vomiting. While the symptoms are the same for both types of ulcers, a key difference is the burning pain accompanying a duodenal ulcer which is caused by an empty stomach while gastric ulcer patients instead exhibit pain after eating.

CAUSES

An ulcer, he elaborates, is essentially caused by an increase in acid production which may be exacerbated by several factors. He adds, “One is Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection which is responsible for 60 percent of gastric ulcers and 90 percent of duodenal ulcers.” While H pylori is a bacterium that is commonly found in the stomach, the vast majority of people infected have no symptoms and will never develop problems. However, H pylori is capable of causing a number of digestive problems, including ulcers. Usually an ulcer will take a few months to heal, but may recur from habits, says Dr. James. “Overall lifestyle modification is the most important form of prevention and treatment also.”

SPECIFIC TREATMENT

Acid secretion can be helped by diet modification, consuming meals on time, smoking cessation, and especially stress modification. With regards to medication, he explains that powerful proton pump inhibitors known as PPI are now being used effectively to provide short-term (two to eight weeks) treatment for ulcers in the stomach and in the upper small intestine,

which can block more than 90 percent of stomach acid production. Also, treatment of H Pylori infection usually leads to clearing of infection, relief of symptoms, and eventual healing of ulcers. “Recurrence of infection can occur and retreatment may be required, if necessary with other antibiotics,” he says, but the treatment is targeted at eradicating the bacterial infection; the ulcer then heals and relapses are prevented.

WORK ON STRESS

Get a good amount of sleep: A proper amount of sleep helps relax and recuperate the mind and body, with the rest helping to reduce some of the ill-effects of stress. Exercise: Exercising helps keep the body fit and helps release endorphins that could potentially help mitigate some of the more physical and even mental effects of stress. Maintain a strong social network: Having a strong network of support and care can also help when feeling stressed. Cultivate a positive mindset: Having a positive mind-set makes tackling stress easier than doing so with a pessimistic attitude. Write a fun list: Take time out to write down a list of things that you love doing. Then when you are feeling down, you can consult your list and depending on how much time you can manage, put something that you love doing into the day. TAKING A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO

POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME

With the influx of additives, hormones, and chemicals hidden in our food along with a sedentary lifestyle, polycystic ovarian syndrome is now becoming increasingly common, even in younger women. For a different approach, Khadija Kapasi, clinical dietitian/lifestyle expert instead focuses on mind-body medicine and lifestyle to manage PCOS.

Jan/Feb 2022

12

PCOS defined

The approach

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common condition that affects how a woman’s ovaries work, explains Kapasi. She elaborates, “If you have at least two of the following symptoms, you may be diagnosed with PCOS: irregular periods – which means your ovaries do not regularly release eggs (ovulation).” Also, excess androgen (male hormones) which is high levels of male hormones in your body, which may cause physical signs such as excess facial or body hair. “Or polycystic ovaries, when the ovaries become enlarged and contain many fluid-filled sacs (follicles) that surround the eggs,” she explains.

Maintain a healthy weight: maintaining a healthy weight can help decrease insulin resistance, regulate your period, and reduce your risk of conditions associated with PCOS. If you’re lean then weight gain or meeting the ideal body weight will be helpful here.

A holistic approach Contraceptive pills and diabetes medications (which combat insulin resistance, a PCOS symptom) can help rectify the hormone imbalance and improve symptoms, reveals Kapasi. She prefers to understand the root cause of the condition with the help of a qualified professional and treat it accordingly. “What we need to ensure is that we have the four verticals of health kept together as they are interrelated and can nourish and flourish women’s health,” she tells. These are your diet, exercise, sleep, and mental health. A good balance of these four verticals can help regulate the hormones and menstrual cycle.

Balance your exercise Exercise is important for maintaining a healthy weight, says Kapasi. “But too much exercise can disrupt your hormones; best are gentle, lowimpact exercises like yoga or Pilates which can be practiced for longer durations.” Swimming and light aerobics are also recommended.

Limit or avoid endocrine disruptors Endocrine disruptors are chemicals or ingredients that interfere with or block your body’s natural hormonal reactions. Some endocrine disruptors mimic female and male sex hormones, confusing your reproductive system. This, she says, can increase your risk of PCOS symptoms. They’re often found in canned foods, soaps, and makeup. Common endocrine disruptors include: dioxins, phthalates, pesticides, BPA, and glycol ethers. H

Practice good sleep hygiene Sleep affects your stress levels and helps regulate cortisol to balance your hormones, tells Kapasi. “But sleep disturbances are twice as common for women with PCOS.” To up your sleep hygiene, she advises to aim for 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night, establish a regular bedtime routine, avoid stimulants and rich, fatty foods before bedtime.

Reduce stress Reducing stress can regulate cortisol. “Many of the aforementioned strategies mentioned above, such as yoga, getting enough sleep, and cutting caffeine, can contribute to lower stress levels,” she advises. “Taking walks outside and creating space in your life for relaxation and self-care can also reduce levels of personal stress.”

SHAKING UP YOUR VISCERAL

FAT

ONCE AND FOR ALL Into the new year, many of us are making goals to lose weight. More specifically, visceral fat is not only dangerous, but it can trigger multiple health issues if not tackled in time. To learn more, HEALTH meets with Bryan Serrao, Personal Trainer at Body & Soul Health Club who provides the facts about this common problem.

Dr. Ali Razzak Jan/Feb 2022

14

What is visceral fat? Visceral fat or belly fat, explains Serrao, is the fat within the abdominal cavity surrounding the internal organs. He elaborates, “Our bodies need some fat for its energy reserves, but our modern day lifestyles do not have the physical workload our bodies have been built to endure,” he says, and this in turn, leads to a surplus of fat especially around the tummy and thighs.

Why it matters According to Serrao, scientific studies have shown that visceral fat is directly linked with heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. It also raises the risk of stroke. He adds, “Researchers speculate that visceral fat creates an increase of certain proteins that inflame your body’s organs and tissues and ultimately narrow your blood vessels. In turn, this can trigger blood pressure to rise which can trigger other health issues.

How to measure it A challenge about visceral fat is that there’s no way to ascertain how much visceral fat there is and where it’s concealed in the body without the use of highly specialized imaging tests. “The good news is these tests are rarely required and instead, there is a simple method to obtain an approximation,” says Serrao. “One is by the waist size; simply wrap a measuring tape around your waist over your belly button, ensuring you are not holding in your stomach.” In women, 35 inches or more is an indicator of visceral fat, while in men, it’s 40 inches. He warns that this method is quite rudimentary, especially if you’re a very large sized person. “And if you’re of Asian descent, the

benchmark for visceral fat drops to 31.5 inches for women and 35.5 inches for men.”

Causes for the increase in visceral fat with aging In simple words, Serrao points out that a calorie surplus diet is what causes visceral fat. “When the body is not burning the calories that are consumed, it stores the excess energy in the form of fat,” he says. “As our body ages, the metabolism rate—the rate at which food is converted into energy—gets slower and slower.” Age also plays a major role as there are hormonal changes which regulate important hormones. Also, stress is one of the underlying causes of excessive visceral fat. Stress causes the body to release a hormone known as cortisol, which increases how much visceral fat a person’s body stores, he explains.

The challenge in shedding visceral fat

fat and is found in the front and back of the neck and upper back,” he says, while white fat is most prevalent in the body and has a number of roles that include temperature regulation, energy storage, protection of organs, and to protect the neuromuscular system. “Visceral fat falls in this category,” he says, and visceral fat is the most stubborn type of body fat as it is one of the last energy stores. The body is therefore programmed to hold onto visceral fat for as long as possible. “It is this reason that shedding this fat requires dedication, motivation, and patience as it needs to be defeated, not just burned.”

Exercises for visceral fat Cardio, he explains, remains a popular choice. “However, just like diet, exercise also needs to be balanced and therefore, strength training/resistance/weight training should never be compromised,” he concludes. H

There are two main types of fat, brown and white, explains Serrao. “Brown is considered as the good Jan/Feb 2022

HOW TO LIVE CONSCIOUSLY IN

2022

We live in a time when the term conscious living may prompt many notions. Images of sage-burning yogis, beyond burgers and green juices may even come to mind. However, this very broad and limited understanding is misleading to the actual way of life. Saadiya Ahmad speaks with Nancy Zabaneh, Wellness Mentor and Kundalini Yoga Teacher Trainer who explains that ultimately, conscious living is about awareness.

Jan/Feb 2022

16

WHAT IT MEANS

At its core, Zabeneh explains that conscious living encompasses the ability to feel your feelings, communicating with authenticity and carrying out meaningful actions that contribute to your own well-being, as well as the well-being of others. She elaborates, “It is also about letting go of the uncontrollable, being sensitive to the world that we live in (as well as its influence on our choices) and recognizing that life is fullest when we are most true to ourselves.” Each and every day we have the power to make informed, considered decisions that are better for our fellow humanbeings, better for our planet, and better for ourselves. Living consciously is about “waking up” to every aspect of your life and giving it considered attention, she says. “It is about choosing to be mindful in all matters, sensitive to what you consume with your senses, and of the effect this has on you.” The fact is that everything around us, especially those things we regularly consume, impact us in a very tangible way. To offer some guidance towards a more conscious life, below are a few factors to consider.

PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOU EAT AND DRINK

Conscious eating is about being

fully present with the act of whatever you are consuming, points out Zabaneh. “It is also about being mindful of each thing that you put into your body and knowing how a particular food will affect you,” she tells. “What you put into your body really does make a difference. Some of the most significant improvements to your overall health can be made, for example, by changing what you drink.”

LOOK AT HOW YOU ARE SPENDING YOUR MONEY

Conscious purchasing is about being mindful of the impact that spending has on you, on others and on the planet. “It is important to ask yourself simple questions like: Is this purchase necessary? Do I really need this? And how will this purchase impact me and those around me?” she says. “This element can be an entire lifestyle change. It is important to stay true to yourself in the process.”

NOTICE WHAT YOU ARE WATCHING

To be more conscious about your information consumption, you should think about a few questions. What are the shows, movies and internet channels you spend your time watching? How much time do you spend

on a screen each day between your smartphone, laptop, and television? Could you pay closer attention to how often you are checking your email and social media accounts daily? Are you learning new and meaningful things through your choices of what to watch? Ideally, anything that does not feed your mind and body in a healthy way should be minimized. Once you are aware of the time spent, you will strive to minimize unnecessary digital clutter, which should lead you on to better living.

CONSCIOUSLY CONNECT TO OTHERS

Take a close look at the company that you keep. “It is important to be surrounded by compassionate beings who relate to the best version of you,” she says. “If spending time with certain individuals’ leaves you feeling drained, then perhaps the way this relationship functions is something you need to reconsider.” Perhaps it’s time to change your associations and to cultivate more conscious connections in your life; decide on the best avenues for making this happen and enjoy creating meaningful and long-lasting bonds with people who are aligned with your values. In the Spotlight: Luke Coutinho

An author of several best-selling books, an expert in integrative and lifestyle medicine, and a speaker, Luke Coutinho met with Saadiya Ahmad to discuss integrative medicine and what it really means.

these patients. He explains, “Integrative medicine is not alternative medicine; it works together with allopathy, oncologists, radiologists, and doctors. So while they treat the symptoms, our job is to manage the side-effects and then the doctors can reduce them off their medications over time.” Integrative medicine applies lifestyle medicine to every condition that requires the human body and lifestyle, including exercise, nutrition, sleep and emotions which he says is huge because the impact of emotional health on the body. Luke Coutinho recently visited Global Indian International School’s Dubai campus as part of the school’s Leadership Lecture Series wherein they introduce motivational examples of leadership and success to the children to enable them to imbibe the virtues they entail.

Background

Working in the field of integrative medicine for the past 18 years, Coutinho primarily meets patients with cancer to help boost the immune system, retrain the immune system, and manage the side-effects of chemotherapy and radiation in

Jan/Feb 2022

Using lifestyle as a medicine

Coutinho applies lifestyle as a medicine; “Even though people around the world have access to gyms, nutritionists, and the best of everything, still the statistics don’t lie,” he says, with the world getting unhealthier. He adds, “People don’t know how to change their lifestyle, so they do diets and make extremes out of it. And as they’re living their lives, they have a box with one hour of exercise daily and eat three healthy meals a day in it.” But there are other things to

include in this including sleep and emotions.

Post COVID issues

Regarding the pandemic, Coutinho remarks that we needed a pandemic to tell people how important immunity was. He elaborates, “But now knowing this plus the vaccine, some people are going back to what they were: sleep deprived, eating sugar, and abusing their health. So the problem is human behavior; people need to realize that suffering can only get better when you do the work. So you have to take ownership and you have to do what the body needs.”

Intermittent fasting Fasting is therapeutic and Coutinho reveals that fasting is the physician everyone has in their body. “The science of fasting is simple; when we fall sick our appetite automatically is diminished since almost 80 percent of the energy in our body is used for digestion,” he says. “When you are sick, the body shuts this digestive system to use this energy for healing and recovery to reduce inflammation, to give energy to

our healing.” At the same time, everyone is doing 16:8 and he asks why not 17:7? “Every day is different, some days your body requires you to use a different energy and if you don’t replenish it, you are actually making fasting into deprivation mode, which is creating stress in the body. So people who are doing this kind of fasting for a little while will get results, but they don’t train their metabolism,” he says, and after a while, that inflammation comes back into the body and the weight comes back on and they struggle to lose it again. He advises that if you fast the right way by giving your body that digestive break even 12 hours will reduce insulin. When insulin is reduced, it opens up cells for fat burning. Fat burning doesn’t work any other way, he says.

your body tells you to eat. “If you have a heavy lunch one day, then balance this out by allowing your body to take that excess food, break it down and utilize it,” he says, because if an individual eats after the next three hours post a heavy meal, the body will break this down and store this as fat. He concludes, “Fasting has to be smart; it’s not a weight loss tool, but it’s a great metabolism tool if you do it the right way. The most effective fasts are 12 hours.” H

Eating sunrise to sunset

The best eating pattern is to go with nature, from sunrise to sunset. The human body, points out Coutinho, is not designed to eat after sunset. “There’s enough medical science behind this; the pancreas stops producing enzymes, the digestive system slows down, showing us the body doesn’t have enough receptors to break down food at night,” he says, so if we can stop eating even one to two hours after sunset, because when we open our eyes we connect with nature and this sends a signal to the digestive system that I am ready for food.

Advice

Basically, Coutinho says that if you are hungry, then eat. If not, continue fasting until

WHAT MAKES DIFFERENT There is a stereotype of what depression looks like. We believe it has to be lots of crying, feelings of worthlessness, reduced appetite, excessive sleeping, isolating and being low all the time. To clarify, Jyotika Aggarwal, DHA Licensed Clinical Psychologist in Dubai discusses the red flags of male depression.

FACTS VERSUS STEREOTYPES According to Aggarwal, there is a stereotype of what depression looks like. “We believe it has to be lots of crying, feelings of worthlessness, reduced appetite, excessive sleeping, isolating and being low all the time.” While these are true and an important part of depression, for men, she explains that depression can look very different and this is the very reason why it may often be missed. She elaborates, “In men, it may manifest with symptoms like increase in fatigue, increased irritability and anger, sometimes they may become abusive in nature, loss

20

of interest in work or hobbies, and difficulty in falling asleep.” Research also suggests that men use more substances, possibly as a form of self-medication. This can hide the symptoms of depression, making it harder to detect and treat effectively.

LESS LIKELY TO REACH OUT AND SEEK HELP Research suggests that men are not likely to accept their symptoms as depression hence, less likely to accept or seek help, points out Aggarwal. “Men find it hard to admit that they are going through any sort of difficulty let alone

mental health concerns,” she says, and men are usually uncomfortable with any sign of weakness within themselves and may be afraid of being judged as a lesser man. Culturally, men are also not taught how to respond to their feelings of negativity, discomfort, or feelings of being low. “They believe they don’t even need to learn and can figure out a way to deal with this.”

SOCIETAL AND CULTURAL EXPECTATIONS PLAY A ROLE Society and cultural beliefs also play a large role in this, she suggests. “Men, from time immemorial are required to be ‘strong’, which in turn pushes them to suppress any emotions that make them vulnerable,” she says; they are told from childhood ‘boys don’t cry’, and as they grow older, they are told to ‘get

over it’. A manly framework is culturally depicted by the elders, explains Aggarwal, and the men have to abide by it. “They get so stuck to this reality that the world has built for them, that they may lose sight of their own emotional difficulties,” she says. “Many cultures associate respect with being manly and those men, who seek help often or may show an emotional side, are often judged in a negative light and not seen as reliable.” Men greatly fear such rejection and judgment, thus making it harder for them to seek help for their depression and anxiety.

HOW DEPRESSION IMPACTS MEN When depressed, men’s daily life and the way they process situations changes, she says. “It can interfere with their productivity, negatively impact their relationships, and have sudden changes in their eating

and sleeping patterns,” she says, and they are likely to be more on the edge, snap faster, and feel more anger. They are internally upset with themselves for not feeling ‘normal’ and feeling emotional discomfort, hence any small incident or conversation can provoke them. “In trying to tackle this situation, men may start avoiding family situations, become workaholics, start controlling, and become abusive in relationships,” she tells.

EXPERT ADVICE Aggarwal points out that the most important thing to remember is we are all human. “We all need support and compassion sometimes and we must not let external, dogmatic thoughts rule us to a point, that it becomes harmful for us,” she says, reminding us that it’s important to open doors for healthy and meaningful actions which help a person live their best life. EXPO 2020 DUBAI:

AUSTRIAN PAVILION LEADS THE CHANGE TOWARDS SUSTAINABILITY

Standing out as an oasis of calm and relaxation in the general hustle and bustle of the event, the markedly different architecture of Austria’s building has won three prestigious awards for its contribution to Expo 2020’s vision of organizing one of the most sustainable world expos of all time. These include the first prize in the sustainable architecture category at the Global Architecture & Design Awards 2021, the Jury’s Favorite in Architectural Design – Sustainable & Energy Saving at the Built Design Awards 2021, and the top sustainability honor at the German Design Awards 2022.

SUSTAINABLE LIVING

According to Commissioner General of the Austrian Pavilion Beatrix Karl,

Jan/Feb 2022

22

Austria has a long history of sustainable living through responsible utilization of available resources. He adds, “These awards are a testament to the efforts that every individual has put into creating this captivating pavilion which represents what a resourceefficient, climate-neutral, environment-friendly future may look like. We hope that through this far-reaching platform of Expo 2020 Dubai, the world can see and experience the very best that Austria has to offer.”

DISTINCTIVE STRUCTURE

Operating under the theme of ‘Austria Makes Sense’ and staying true to Expo 2020’s mission of creating a sustainable future for everyone, the central European nation has come up with arguably the most distinct structure. The entire building – which pays homage to the Arab architectural tradition of using cones inspired by wind towers – requires 70 percent less energy than any conventionally air-conditioned

THE COOLING CONCEPT Located in the Opportunity Sector, the Austrian Pavilion enables visitors to immerse themselves directly into the countless possibilities that are related to and go beyond sustainable living. The cooling concept is a page out of the Arab architectural book where wind catching towers, or cones, allow reduced electricity consumption to cool

facility in weather conditions similar to those in the UAE.

OUT OF THE BOX

Combining the best of technology and ecology, the Austrian Pavilion has only partnered with companies that have a spectacular vision for a better future, sending a strong message of support for climate protection and sustainable development. A case in point inside the pavilion is the iLab, which is a vibrant space known for its innovative practices and out-of-the-box ideas. The exhibits of Austrian companies inside the iLab are displayed digitally and physically in Innovation Towers with topics grouped in two phases with four cluster themes in each. In the first phase, from October to December 2021, the Innovation Towers in the Austrian Pavilion will focus on the topics: City, Circular Economy, Mobility and Digital Opportunities. These will be followed from January to March 2022, by the next four clusters of the exhibition: Water, Agriculture, Health & Life Science, New Materials and Digital Security. Under the topic Health & Life Science, the Austrian companies are showcasing how technology can be used to provide better solutions and improve the quality of healthcare services.

For example, the company Kerkoc, an orthopedic technology company that was established in Vienna in 1945, has developed the Luxinergy system that combines knowledge gained through traditional craftsmanship with modern production technology. After scanning the patients; the system uses 3D printers, developed especially for orthopedics, and a patented biocompatible resin to create an accurate 3D model, which is then used to design custom-fit orthotics. The system reduces lead time and waste compared to the current pouring and molding method by more than 70 percent. It creates lighter-weight, more breathable and more durable orthotics. Another company is SCARLETRED, a Vienna based international digital health company revolutionizing the global dermatology and telemedicine market. The company is presenting their CE-certified medical device, Scarletred®Vision, the first technology to enable the generation, documentation, and objective analysis of standardized dermatological images using customizable analytical tools. The system integrates the use of a small patch to standardize the imaging procedure and exchanges anonymized medical data in real time between users and a neuronal machine learning network.

the entire space. This makes for quite a pleasant environment throughout the pavilion even during hot weather. The entire structure has been prepared using prefabricated parts with the aim of using as few resources as possible. Moreover, the entire façade is easy to take down after the event which concludes in March, 2022. Once decommissioned, the design team responsible for creating the pavilion intends to set up a new building using the same parts at a different location in the region. The high flexibility of the components allows them to create something entirely different from what has been seen at Expo 2020 Dubai. H Jan/Feb 2022

New Zealand Pavilion’s Theme ‘Care for People and Place’

The New Zealand Pavilion, designed by New Zealand architects Jasmax, includes a kinetic façade made from an unusual architectural mesh called Kaynemaile. Jan/Feb 2022

24

THE CONCEPT The façade’s movement signifies that the pavilion itself is alive. The ‘living’ façade reinforces the New Zealand Pavilion’s Theme of “Care for People and Place”, which is based on kaitiakitanga, the environmental ethos of Māori, the indigenous people of New Zealand Aotearoa, and the understanding that humans and nature are inextricably connected. By entering the pavilion, the visitor re-connects to the mauri, or life principle, inherent in nature’s order.

THE INSPIRATION The New Zealand Pavilion story is inspired by the Whanganui River, which in 2017 was given legal personhood after decades of negotiation between the iwi (tribe) Te Āti Haunui-aPāpārangi and the New Zealand government. The innovative legislation recognizes the river as a living and indivisible physical as well as spiritual whole – Te Awa Tupua – flipping the existing paradigm by placing the River as the focus of human interaction in line with Māori values and worldview.

a nation of innovators who Care for People and Place.”

THE RECYCLING CONTEXT The final product, which took six years to perfect, is crafted from lightweight polycarbonate using a patented injection molding process. Today, Kaynemaile and its design studio have evolved to be used by architects around the world to create, divide and protect building interiors and exteriors. The lightweight Kaynemaile mesh is one hundred percent recyclable and includes approximately 10 percent recycled materials in its composition.

HELPING REDUCE HEAT TRANSFER Discussing the distinctive design of the innovative architectural mesh, Kayne Horsham, CEO of Kaynemaile explains, “Kaynemaile’s mesh, specifically for the Middle East, also radically reduces

by up to 70 percent the radiant heat transfer from direct sunlight to internal environments, thereby reducing pressure on installed cooling systems.”

ABOUT EXPO 2020 Expo 2020 Dubai is the first World Expo held in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA) region. It is also the largest event ever staged in the Arab world, welcoming more than 200 participants and millions of visitors from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022. For the first time in World Expo history, every participating country has its own pavilion – located according to its chosen subtheme rather than global geography – to creatively showcase the best of its culture, innovations and ideas. In addition to the Country Pavilions, multilateral organizations, educational institutions, global initiatives, and partners have presence on the Expo site. H

AN IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE According to Clayton Kimpton, New Zealand’s CommissionerGeneral to Expo 2020 Dubai, every element of the pavilion is interconnected. He elaborates, “From the immersive visitor experience and storytelling rooms inside the pavilion, to the pulse, which starts in our river room and ripples all the way to the exterior façade. This is the life force of our story - a story of

REACHING GOALS THE RIGHT WAY FROM LOSING WEIGHT TO EATING HEALTHIER, WITH THE NEW YEAR HERE, MOST OF US HAVE LISTED DOWN OUR SHORT-TERM AND LONGTERM GOALS, OFTEN NOT ACHIEVING THEM. YET DR. SALIHA AFRIDI, CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST (DHA LICENSED) REVEALS THE RIGHT WAY TO ACHIEVE OUR RESOLUTIONS AND KEEP THEM FOR LIFE.

WHY WE SET GOALS FOR THE NEW YEAR

There are several reasons for setting goals and resolutions at the beginning of the new year, tells Dr. Afridi. “One is we are culturally expected to make new year resolutions and also, it’s natural that with any new beginning you have the intention to want to do and be different,” she says. “However, we do not realize that some of the habits that we are trying to change are deeply rooted anxiety management behaviors/ systems and if we make goals (for example, to lose five kilos) without consideration of the underlying systems

Jan/Feb 2022

26

and without addressing the underlying causes of those behaviors, we will end up right where we started.” But good intentions and great goals are not enough to change behavior—we have to first understand what purpose the current behaviors are serving before we can make lasting change.

THE PROCESS

She advises to write short term/quick win goals, medium term goals, and long term goals for each area. “Do not ask others about what your goals should be,” she tells, and first, spend time with yourself and reflect on what gives you fulfillment and

try to build that into your goals. Then, you can work with a coach or a therapist to discuss the life goals. “Some of these include work, physical health, personal growth, friends and family, intimate relationship, finances, and fun/entertainment.”

THE CORRECT WAY TO SET GOALS

People set goals without considering the science of goal setting and habit change, points out Dr. Afridi. “They believe that wanting something, mustering enough willpower, and believing that they are committed is enough to get them to achieve their goal, she says, and this is not the case. The more established the habit, the more difficult it will be to wire your brain’s neural pathways into a new and healthy habit. Habit change is basically like trying to break an addiction— it takes intention, effort, willpower, understanding of the underlying issues, triggers, and bounce back plans. She reminds us that there is no such thing as a ‘fail safe’ way of setting resolutions. “Habit change and goal achievement are very difficult and one has to go into their new years’ resolution with a lot of thought

and consideration to the factors stated above,” she suggests, highlighting some of the roadblocks that set people back from achieving their resolutions which includes: denial about how difficult habits actually are to alter. Also, not managing stress as stress decreases your ability to commit to making new neural pathways in the brain and when they are stressed they go back to the ‘default’ habits. And finally, not understanding the issue under the bad habit, as Dr. Afridi cites the example of being overweight. “Being overweight is not just about changing your diet; it is about understanding and changing your relationships with food.”

WAYS TO COME TOWARDS HABIT CHANGE 1 Set an intention and be clear about your motivation. The ‘why’ is more important to consider than the ‘how’ sometimes. 2 Have a schedule and a plan. Speak in ‘if-then statements’. If I go to the grocery store, then I will avoid the junk food aisle. Time management becomes very important during habit change. If I want

to start the habit of exercising or decluttering once a week or calling friends or family more often, it will need to be scheduled in and planned for. 3 Troubleshoot and build in room for ‘bad days’. When was the last time you tried to stop or change this habit, what got in the way? Plan for the obstacles before you start. Also, have a bounce-back plan—what will happen if you get off track? What will you do to get right back on track rather than giving up (which is what most people do). 4 Make micro-habits. Break the habit into the smallest steps. Instead of saying ‘I will work out 30 minutes a day’, start with 5k steps or 7 minutes at the gym. The goal is not baby steps… it’s tiny, micromovements until enough momentum and esteem are developed and then you can move faster towards your goal. 5 Change your environment. If you are trying to lose weight, don’t bring sugar home. Also, in order to stay conscious and on course, we have to manage our stress and our time. H

Why start-ups should be setting up with

sustainability at the heart

Start-up businesses are the heartbeat and future of our planet, and they therefore, must play a key role in creating sustainable businesses of the future. To elaborate more, UK TV personality and founder of sustainability platform ‘Buy Smarter Buy Greener’ Kate Hardcastle MBE discusses the way forward in sustainability and small businesses.

WHY IT MATTERS

According to Hardcastle, at a time when our planet had some time to recover due to less travel during COVID-19, the leaders of the world came together for COP26 and the big brands are making their pledges to do more and be better – with net zero, reducing waste, recycling and reusing, all high on the agenda. “It matters to our consumers more than ever too, COVID-19 has subtly, but significantly shifted consumer awareness of the relationship with the spaces in which we live, accelerating demand for living a more sustainable life,” she says. “Over the last 18 months, consumers have spent more time outdoors and in many cases had more time on their hands to appreciate our planet with 39 percent of shoppers saying they will have a more environmentally friendly mindset when out shopping as a result of COVID-19.”

WHERE TO BEGIN

When we talk about sustainability, it’s important to look at what is Jan/Feb 2022

28

realistic to a business owner? “We know that it’s impossible to be one hundred percent green and sustainable all of the time, so it’s essential to look at what is realistic for you and your business – what quick switches, ideas, and changes could you implement to make a difference?” she asks. “Small steps make big changes. As a start-up business of 2021 and beyond, it is our duty to create a business which is mindful of our planet, reducing the impact, and in an ideal world, being self-sufficient.”

HERE ARE SOME AREAS TO CONSIDER WHEN STARTING YOUR BUSINESS:

Create a green culture from day one – setting out your green

agenda and objectives at the same time as creating your business plan is essential – sustainability should be at the heart of your business. Think about how you could help your staff, your community, and those around you to be green, too– could you set up a ‘green team’

do list, reviewing your waste is an effective way to understand exactly what your business is using and what is being thrown away – as a start-up business, take a look at your forecasted wastage – how can you reduce, reuse, and recycle more in your processes?

Behind the scenes – when

or allocate a ‘green champion’? Empower staff to make important decisions and introduce new initiatives that will encourage all staff and customers to make more sustainable choices.

Reducing your carbon footprint – many large

companies have set future goals to reduce their carbon emissions and become net zero – as a startup business, how can you build this into your business plan from the word go? Think about your forecasted emissions, how could you minimize or reduce them? Look at your consumption of energy and water, can you install heat pumps or solar panels to generate your own energy from the beginning? If you can’t avoid or reduce certain elements of energy usage, look into carbon offsetting schemes whilst you find a way to reduce your emissions further.

Packaging – think about how

your products are packages and

distributed to your customers. What type of materials are you using to send your products out to customers? Can you reduce the amount of packaging used or reduce the amount of single use plastics used in the process?

Product sourcing - take a

look at the products you will use to run your business, whether this is the materials used to make your products or the tools and machinery needed in the process – can you reduce plastic usage or use recycled materials?

Challenging your supply chain – take a look at your

suppliers green credentials to make sure they align with your sustainable values or even simply asking them if they can source a more environmentally friendly solution for you can make a big difference.

Wastage and recycling - whilst we appreciate that

setting up a business, there are many behind the scenes tasks that can be tackled with a green focus from day one – from the cleaning products you use to the energy consumed and even the pens in your stationery cupboard. Having a holistic approach to creating a sustainable business will help embed your green plan and cement it at the heart of the business.

Consider ways to help your customers make sustainable choices – how can you help them

to come on the green journey, too? Can you help them live every day in a more sustainable way? Can you educate them on how your products or services are reducing the impact on our planet? Can you give them tips or ideas to be more sustainable?

Collaboration is key – we

simply can’t work alone to reduce our impact on the planet – how can you work with others to make a difference? Can you make a collective effort to reduce waste or recycle more? Can you create a green charter for the businesses around you to sign up to? Together, we can make an impact and doing so from day one in a start-up business gives the upper hand and keeps sustainability at the forefront. H

Dining Out Asado’s La Peñia Brunch at The Palace Hotel, Dubai Inspired by the concept of a Latin American food market and one of Dubai’s most authentic Argentinian venues, this brunch offers al fresco dining as well as indoor. Of course, with Dubai’s currently gorgeous weather, we enjoyed our experience outside, with beautiful views of the Burj Khalifa and the Fountains. The experience was taken up a notch with the live singer providing soulful entertainment as we dined. The brunch is served to the table in courses and we tucked into the starters which included

It’s brunch season in Dubai with an Argentinian inspired brunch with views of the Burj Khalifa, a fun party brunch overlooking the city’s skyline, and a festive themed brunch. Here’s our roundup of the best dining experiences in Dubai.

braseola, empanadas, potato croquettes stuffed with cheese, salads, and super fresh ceviche which highlighted Argentina’s colorful culinary heritage with an emphasis on the chef ’s culinary wizardry. With a market style section set up for meats, we indulged in the beef short ribs (Asado de Tira), grilled chicken (Pollo Asado), and the thin beef slices (Entrana). All of the meats were deeply flavorful, marinated with the classic flavors of Argentinian signature chimichurri. With the meats, we enjoyed the chargrilled corn-on-the-cob and roasted potatoes. In between, we loved their assorted mocktails, including my all-time favorite lemon and mint mojito.

Our desserts were served on a board and were an eclectic mix of Latin inspired treats. There were mini churros, fresh fruit, Chaja—a subtlety flavored vanilla genoise with peach and dulce de leche, and Panqueque Dulce de Leche—pancakes filled with traditional dulce de leche, and traditional rice pudding topped with fresh flower petals.

tamarillo salsa. The kimchi quinoa chaufa was really warming, with fried rice, quinoa, kimchi, and spices. As we dined, we were delighted to watch the Latin dancers and live music; while we feasted on their desserts which arrived in a cage—key lime pie, pineapple ice box cake, Maracaibo fudge cake, churros with a chocolate dipping sauce, and lastly, Columbian coffee concoction. Visit: Hotel Cartagena at the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel 04 350 9287

Hotel Cartagena at the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel, Dubai Located at the top of the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel with 360-degree views of the city, this venue has its own exclusive elevator which takes you straight to the most vibrant and lively brunch I have ever experienced. Lots of foliage, music, and fun memorabilia dot the space, while the backstory behind this venue revolves around Mrs. Buendia who inherited the venue in the 1950’s from her father. Over the years, travellers passed through its doors, leaving behind mementos that are still intact.

Course 2 was the hot starters and we tucked into the chicharones, smoked BBQ quesadilla, which we loved, and the unique curled corn. The mains were really satisfying, ranging from Carne Asada—adobo marinated beef steak, chimichurri, then the Pescado à la Plancha—pan seared fish, with mussels, clams, coconut, and yellow chilli veloute. Our favorite was the Lamb Chuleton-rack of lamb, glazed rocoto puree, and roasted

Course 1 included guacamole and chips with a twist as this included spiced tabbouleh and burrata, then the ceviche which is always a hit with us. The maki rolls were vegan, made with sweet plantain, maduros, vegetable escabeche, bok choy and truffle aioli. And the baby gem and avo salad—which was a medley of crunchy edamame and creamy avocado.

The Marasi Brunch at Hotel Indigo, Dubai This new brunch in one of the artiest hotels in Dubai offers superb dishes, assorted mocktails, and live entertainment to keep you happy throughout your brunch experience. We started with a freshly baked breads basket, followed by a show stopping double-layered Mediterranean charcuterie board which included assorted cold cuts—lomo, salami, and bresaola. There was a variety of cheeses accompanied by dried fruit and nuts like apricots and figs which paired wonderfully with the cheeses. Then there were breadsticks which were perfect with the beetroot dip and the feta and pistachio dips. There were also assorted mini breads, condiments, some delicious puff pastries with baked goat’s cheese and apple. I loved the devilled eggs with caviar and smoked salmon which went really well

with the mini sausage rolls. Also, there was an iced double-tiered platter which arrived at the table in molecular gastronomy style, with prawn cocktail and ceviche shots. For the mains, we really enjoyed the chef ’s special with the moreish beef sliders served with coleslaw and chipotle aioli, then the Lamb Souvlakiwith tzatziki and pita bread, lamb skewers, fried calamari, and more. In between, we tucked into mojitos

including pina colada, mint and lemon. The experience was even more enjoyable with the live entertainment headed by a DJ and live musicians. Here the desserts section is a ‘Candy Souq’ which offers a live crepes station, a donut wall, plus lots of tiny tarts, cakes, pastries, and more. There was a chocolate bombe—a chocolate shell with chocolate raspberry mousse, carrot cake, chocolate brownies, tiramisu, aa Marasi candy tree complete with assorted candy, lollipops, and sweets. Truly a wonderfully indulgent desserts section to satisfy our sweet tooth cravings. Visit: Open Sesame, Hotel Indigo, Downtown Dubai 04 210 2210

USING FACIAL OILS FOR SENSITIVE SKIN

Question: Is facial oil safe to use for combination skin and ideally, what ingredients should I be looking for in a day oil?

Ankita Khare, Director of Aroma Tierra,

responds, “Natural facial oils, if chosen correctly, work wonders for combination skin as they nourish, moisturize, and balance the skin’s natural oil production. Avoid heavier oils such as almond or olive, and lighter oils such as argan or grapeseed. Our top picks for combination skin are rosehip, prickly pear, and jojoba oils, as these have medium consistency, low comedogenic index, and excellent skincare benefits. It is also common to add a few drops of Clary Sage and Geranium essential oils for their oil balancing properties. Look for natural ingredients in your face oil, and avoid products with chemicals, mineral oil, fillers, or fragrance. The best day oil should be brimming with bioactive nutrients such as fatty acids, vitamins, phytonutrients, and antioxidants.”

CYST ON THE BODY

Question: I recently developed a cyst and the doctor said it’s a sebaceous cyst. What does it mean and is there a reason for it?

Dr. Rutsnei Schmitz, M.D. Specialist

Dermatologist responds, “A sebaceous cyst is a misname for an epidermoid cyst. They do not have any sebaceous glands nor contain sebum. Epidermoid cysts are derived from a hair follicle, covered by a thin layer of skin. They are filled with keratin and lipids(oil) debris. They come from a clogged hair exit, or after a minor trauma that makes the outer skin (epidermis) go into the inner skin(dermis). It should present as a firm, yellowish bump fixed to the skin, but mobile with a central punctum or blackhead. Foulsmelling cheesy content can be squeezed from it. Epidermoid cysts are common on the chest, shoulders, and face, but can occur anywhere on the body, including the genitals. Complications of an epidermoid cyst include rupture of the cyst, which can result in swelling and tenderness, due to trauma and bacterial infection. The cyst can be left alone in most cases. If the cyst has ruptured, it may recur. It’s not advisable to squeeze or manipulate a cyst because of this.”

POSSIBLE LACTOSE INTOLERANCE

Question: How can I tell if my 3-year-old daughter is lactose intolerant?

Fehmida Jafri, Dietician/Nutritionist responds,

“Lactose is a sugar found in foods that many children love, including milk, ice cream and cheeses. For absorption by the body, lactose has to be split into its two constituents by an enzyme called lactase, which is found in the small intestine. Children who are lactose intolerant do not produce enough lactase, an enzyme in the digestive tract that breaks down lactose. In order to identify if your child has lactose intolerance, it’s important to be conscious of the signs and symptoms. For those children who are lactose intolerant, the action of lactase is ineffective; it then passes into the large intestine, where it is fermented by gut bacteria. As a result, carbon dioxide and hydrogen are produced, as well as a few by-products that have a laxative effect. If your child is lactose intolerant, you will see more and more symptoms related to it upon consumption of dairy products. Some red-flag symptoms to watch out for, especially after your child eats dairy products, include: stomach bloating, gas and nausea, loose stools and gas, skin rash and frequent colds, and generalized abdominal pain and cramping. Parents sometimes confuse lactose intolerance with milk allergy. Although having similar symptoms, a milk allergy is a serious immune system reaction that usually appears in the first year of life. Lactose intolerance is a digestive issue that is hardly seen in children. For children who cannot perform the breath test to detect hydrogen, a simple plan of a lactose elimination diet for two to four weeks can help detect the lactose intolerance.
